1. Welcome to the Class: Whenever I travel, I always make sure that I carry my
sketchbook with myself. If I observe any
building element which can be sketched
and painted, I will start with
a basic sketch and paint it with watercolors
in an abstract manner. In this class, we are going
on a journey to six days of urban sketching with three
easy steps of painting. The three basic steps are sketching, inking, and painting, and we're going to use a minimal color palette using
the medium of watercolors. Hey everybody, myself,
Ruthwick Patel, I'm a self taught
independent artist and an interior
designer by profession. In this class, we're
going to create six beautiful paintings
based on urban sketching. The class is absolutely
suited for beginners and also intermediate and
advanced level artists can try it as someone who's very much passionate
about teaching. My major focus is always
to create classes for beginners who are trying to develop their skills
on a regular basis. I personally love to explore different art mediums and styles and not stick to
one particular thing. If you're joining
me, you'll find a variety of classes
that I create. We are going to start
by understanding all the six class
projects in detail. No need to worry at all. It includes three basic
steps of creating. We're going to talk about all the art supplies that you will need for
the entire class. Before starting with the class, we are going to understand the color palette that
we're going to use. It is going to be a very
minimal color palette. We're going to have a simple practice session in which we are going to understand the elements and how to paint them in detail. So we're going to have
three simple steps, which basically includes basic
sketching using a pencil, then applying some black ink to the entire sketch to create
some depth and details. Then we're going to use the
medium of watercolors to apply some beautiful colors
to the entire sketch. Don't worry about perfection. Urban sketching is all about creating rough and
random sketches and painting them with some
beautiful colors all over. You're definitely going to enjoy the entire process of creating. By the end of the
class, you'll be having six beautiful class projects based on urban sketching
without any delay. Grab your art supplies and join me on this
creative journey.
2. Details About the Class Projects: Hey everybody. So before
we start with the class, let me give you all
the details about the class projects
that we're going to create. No need
to worry at all. There are going to be some basic and simple painting
techniques that we're going to include in all the six class projects
that we're going to create. One thing that I would
like to tell you all is that no need
to worry about the output and painting it in the exact same
way I'm painting. You can definitely explore, create your own composition
of the paintings as well. Just enjoy the process, observe all the
details carefully, and then you can follow
on the class projects. So let me take you towards the class projects
so that you can get an exact idea of what we're going to create
in the entire class. As you can observe,
I have placed all my six class projects
on the desk surface. I'll be giving you the
details one by one. Let me take the
first class project. Let me take you a
little bit closer so that you can observe all
the details carefully. I have named this particular
class project as The Castle. You can observe that we have created this on a
horizontal format. It's a simple six size
watercolor paper. There is a basic sketch
of the entire castle in the bottom portion and a huge structure in
between as well. We will start with a basic
sketch using a pencil, then we will apply black ink. There's a combination
of green and blue color in this particular
class project. Now let me take you towards
the next class project, which is named as the dome. In this particular
class project, you can observe that I have created it in a vertical format. There's going to be a
beautiful structure, having a huge dome in between. You can observe a beautiful
color combination and a nice abstract
background as well. We're also going to add some nice text In
every class project, you're free to write anything
that is convenient to you. This particular class
project is again, in a vertical format, and I have named it
as a vintage house. You can observe all
the details carefully. There is a beautiful house with a beautiful window and some beautiful
abstract background. Then comes one of my
favorite class project, which is a nice window. There is going to be
a detailed window in the entire vertical format. There is going to be
some nice plantation in the left hand portion, a beautiful fence, and
an abstract background. No need to worry at all. There are going to be three
simple steps in which we are going to create all the
six class projects. Then comes another
class project, which is the lantern. You can observe a beautiful lantern in the center portion. Again, this is in
a vertical format, some beautiful leaves around and a basic structure
in the background. In every class project, you can observe these
beautiful random strokes, rough color patches. No need to worry
about perfection in any of the class projects. Then comes the last
class project, which is The Palace. In this particular
class project, we have used the
horizontal format. There is a beautiful
color combination and an abstract background all over. There are going to be a lot of rough and random
strokes that we're going to create using black ink. Then we're going to apply water colors in a
very random manner. I would like to
tell you all that. No need to worry about
perfection also. No need to worry
about painting it in the exact same way
I have painted. You can create your
own combination. You can create your
own collection of these beautiful
urban sketches as well. I hope that you got
an exact idea of all the six class projects that we're going to create in
this particular class. Now let us move
towards the next part.
3. Art Supplies: Hey everybody. Before we
start with the class, let me give you all
the details about the art supplies that
we are going to use. No need to worry at all in case you're missing out on any
particular art supply. You'll find it very easily in any nearby local
art store or you can go for any other good
alternative as well. As you can observe,
I have placed all my art supplies on the desk surface in
a systematic manner. Let us understand
all the art supplies one by one so that you can get an exact idea of what all art supplies you will need before starting
with the class. The first art supply is a simple spray bottle that
we're going to use to lose the watercolors and we're
also going to use it to create a beautiful
abstract background in the class projects. Then comes the next art supply, which is a simple
glass container in which we are going to
take some clear water. It basically helps us to
clean the brushes and use water wherever required
in the entire class project. Since we are going to use a simple pencil for
basic sketching, that's why a simple
eraser and a sharpener, it would be helpful to sharp the pencil and erase the
sketch in case required. Then next up we have
a simple tissue paper which we will use to dab the brushes to remove excess amount of water
and color if required. It's always good to keep a tissue paper site by
whenever you're painting. Now comes the most
important part, which is the watercolors
that we're going to use. No need to worry at all. It is going to be a very
minimal color palette that we're going to use in all
the six class projects. Let me give you the details. As you can observe, these
are watercolor tubes. We have light green, deep green, cadmium orange, celine
blue, teal and black. These are the basic colors
that you will need. I have placed them in my
simple color palette, where I have all the colors here and some mixing
space as well. You can use a simple
color palette as well. Also, no need to
worry about getting the exact shade of the colors
that I have showed you. You can go for any other
good alternative as well. In fact, you can make your
own color combination and create your own
color palette as well. Then I have a simple masking
tape right in front of you, which we are going to use
to place the paper on the desk surface that it will not move while
we are painting. Here is one of our class project which is in a vertical format. There is also going
to be class project in a horizontal format as well. Let me give you the details
of the watercolor paper. These are watercolor
paper of size 6.300 GSM. You have to make
sure that you use a 300 GSM watercolor
paper because it will have a good
thickness and you can apply heavy washes of
color and water on it. Then comes the brush that
we are going to use. It is really amazing that
for the entire class, you will need a single brush, which is a round
brush of size seven. Then next up I have
two simple markers and a single pen which
is going to be blue as you can observe, There is going to be a
simple pen that I'm going to use to add some text
in our class projects. You can use any other
good alternative as well. It is completely fine. Then I have a simple
calligraphy pen. It is basically a marker
only, which is black. And it is having a thick tip. As you can observe, wherever we want a thick stroke
of solid black color, we're going to use
this particular pen. And then I have a simple
marker from Faber Castle. And it is going to
have a thin tip. As you can observe, you don't have to worry
about the brand. It is completely fine. You can go for any other
good alternative as well. Also, in case you want to use a different color
pen rather than blue pen, it is completely fine. You're free to experiment. Then I have a simple
pencil that we're going to use to draw a basic sketch
before we start inking. Let me take you towards two of the class projects
so that you can observe the way you're going to create one project in
a horizontal format, another one in a
vertical format. These are the basic art
supplies that you will need to create all the six
beautiful class projects. As I told you, no need
to worry about getting the exact art supply that
I'm having right now. You can go for any other
good alternative as well, or you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store. Now let us move
towards the next part.
4. Color Palette: Hey everybody. Now
let us understand the color palette that
we're going to use. Before starting with
the class projects, let me give you
the details about the watercolor tubes
that we're going to use. It's basically going to be a
very minimal color palette. The first one is deep
green, light green, cerreline blue, teal,
cadmium orange, and black. These are basic six
colors that we're going to use to create all
the six class projects. No need to worry at all. In case you do not
have the exact shade, you can go for any other
good alternative as well. In fact, you can create your own color combination as well. In my practice sheet, I have just simply labeled
all the colors. In the topmost portion, we're going to apply
the colors one by one. I'll be using my round
brush of size seven. Now the reason behind applying the colors to the
paper is so that you can understand the
exact application of the color onto the
watercolor paper. You can observe in this
particular class project, the combination of colors that we are going
to use together. One thing that you can
keep in mind while using water colors is that
the color that you apply initially onto the paper will definitely get
one shade lighter. When it dries up, it basically decreases the
saturation of the color. You have to create
a nice combination of water and color together. Let us start with Celine Blue. In my color palette, you can observe I'm already
having the colors. I'll just add a little bit of water to loose in the color. Now, once you think
that you have created a nice combination of
color and water together, just apply a small patch of the color just above the
labeling that you have given. This basically also helps you to identify the color while you're creating
the class project. You can take a reference from this particular
practice sheet to get the exact idea of which
color we are using right now. In case you do not want
to go in that deep study, you can definitely use
the basic terms as blue, red, green, et cetera. Now I'll be adding
the second patch of the color which is steel. Just add a little bit of water
in the color palette and apply a small patch of this
particular color as well. You can observe it is having a little bit of variation
than the first one. Whenever we use an
artist grade of colors, in whichever medium
you're working with, whether it is water color, et cetera, there are
terms in detail. The colors will be named in a very complicated
manner as well. But in case you do not want
to make it that complex, you can definitely use
simple terms like orange, green, blue, black, et cetera. In case you're using an
artist's grade range only, then it is completely fine. You'll be easily able
to figure it out. I'll be applying
deep green color. I'll just create a small patch of this particular
color as well. Then we have light green again. I'll be taking some water in the color palette,
mix the colors well, try to create a nice
combination of water and color together and
apply a small patch. Then comes the last color, which is going to be the
major color to create some nice depth and details
in the entire painting. So I'll be taking some
good solid black color, make a good combination of
water and color together. And apply a small patch again, try to have a less amount
of water so that we can get a highly saturated,
solid black color. These are the six basic
colors that we're going to use to create all
the six class projects. Apart from this, we are
going to sketch and create a nice black ink
on the entire sketch. You can use a simple
pencil to create these basic strokes to
complete the entire sketch. Then I'll be using a
simple thin marker to get a thin black stroke. And then in the
last, we are going to use a thick calligraphy pen, which is a strong marker
having a thick tip. I hope that you got an exact
idea of the color palette. Now let us move
towards the next part.
5. Lets Practice: Everybody. Now let us practice all the elements that you will
need for the entire class. No need to worry at all. We are going to have a simple practice session
which will be really helpful for you to have a prior knowledge of
all the class projects. Let us start with a
simple basic sketch. I have one of my class projects placed in the left hand portion. As you can observe,
it's a simple lantern. I'll be using a simple pencil initially to create
a basic sketch. I've started by creating a semicircular shape on
the topmost portion. Then we have a
simple structure of the entire lantern having
verticals in between. And then you have to
end it up by adding a small semicircular shape in
the bottom portion as well. Then we're going to
add a little light in the middle portion. You can simply
follow these steps. No need to hurry at all. Try to draw a rough sketch in a very slow and
steady manner. Try to apply rough
and random strokes. Only no need to worry
about perfection. You can observe carefully. I'm adding these
little leaves in the surrounding of
the entire lantern. This is how you have to just randomly create a rough sketch. No need to worry
about perfection. Now we're going to ink
the entire sketch. So I'll be using my marker. Initially, we are
using a thin marker. Basically, just start
from the topmost portion. I can give you a nice tip
while sketching whenever you're inking or using a simple pencil Also
while sketching, just try to keep your hand
very much loose and free. No need to make it
very much stiff, No need to worry
about perfection. You can add minor details
using the same marker. You can observe I'm adding
these little vertical lines on the topmost portion and you can observe that I'm just moving my hand in a very free manner. Slowly, we are going to cover
the entire pencil line. You can enhance the points
where the lines are intersecting by applying
some more pressure on it. I'm covering the bottom
portion as well. I'll be adding the
same vertical lines to add some minute details
in the entire sketch. Whenever you're inking
using a marker, no need to worry about getting a very rough and
random stroke in case it is getting a little
bit random in certain areas, it is completely fine. It can be the part of the
entire urban sketching. I'll be covering
the leaves as well, and I'm just finishing
up with the light. We are done inking with a
small tip of the marker. Now I'll be using
my calligraphy pen, which is basically
a thick marker only having a broader tip. You can observe that we get a nice solid black stroke to
enhance the entire sketch. Basically, we are not going to apply the thick black stroke
in the entire sketch. I'm just applying it
in certain portions to enhance and create
some nice depth and details in the
entire sketch, I'm covering the
bottom portion to apply this solid
black color as well. Again, I'll be repeating
the same steps that no need to hurry at all. Try to keep your hand
very much loose and free and apply these strokes in a
very random and natural way. Now let us apply water colors, which is a very amazing
and satisfying part. I'll be using my round
brush of pi seven. Apply a nice coat of water, and I'll be taking some
cadmium orange initially. Make a good composition
of color and water together and apply it
in the center portion. We are just spreading
some light element, you can observe it in the class project on the
left hand side as well, I'll be taking some
nice combination of deep green and light green together and
we're going to apply it on the entire lantern. Use the tip of your round brush
to paint in smaller area. You can observe very
carefully that I'm moving my round brush in a very
random and natural way only. Just be very much careful
In smaller portion, just use the tip of
your round brush. I'll be just blending the deep green and light green color with the cadmium orange as well. Now you can randomly
apply the color in the surrounding portion
of the leaves as well. In the background, you can observe that I have applied the color in a very random
and natural manner. Only. No need to worry about painting it in
the exact same way I'm painting right now. You can just randomly apply
the brush strokes as well. You can observe to
enhance the leaves, I have applied the
darker tone of green in the leaves and we're going
to splatter some color. So add some water in
color and just simply tap your finger randomly, splatter some color
around the entire sketch. These are the three basic
steps that we're going to use in all the
six class projects. I hope that you
got an exact idea of the practice sheet
and the color palette. Now let us move
towards the next part.
6. Lets Place the Paper: Everybody. So before
we start painting, let us place the paper on the desk surface so that it will be comfortable
for you to paint. If you observe the class
projects carefully, We are going to
have class project in a vertical format and there is also going
to be a class project in an horizontal format as well. I'll be giving you
a very easy and simple technique
of how you can use a simple masking tape to place your watercolor paper on a position so that it will not move while you're painting. I'm going to use my six
size watercolor paper, and it is 300 GSM. The GSM basically
means the thickness of the paper so that you can
apply heavy washes on it. Once we apply the masking tape, the paper will be stuck to the desk surface and it will not move while
you're painting. You can place it in
a vertical manner or in a horizontal manner. Now I'll be taking
my masking tape and we're just going to take
a small piece of it. Then you just have to convert it into a double sided tape. Just flip it over
each other and you'll observe that it will have
sticky part on both the sides. And simply place the piece
on the watercolor paper. I'm going to place only
two pieces because the paper size is a smaller one. In case you're using
a bigger paper size, then you can place four
pieces of the masking tape. Now simply flip the paper and apply some pressure
using your fingers. And you'll observe that
the paper will be stuck to the desk surface completely and it will not move
while you're painting. It's a very simple and easy
technique in case you want to place your paper completely
to the desk surface. You can use this
technique if you're comfortable with a loose paper
that is completely fine. Now let us move
towards the next part.
7. Painting 1 - The Castle: Everybody. So you're
most welcome to the first class project,
which is The Castle. As you can observe,
I'm ready with my watercolor paper placed
on the desk surface and all the art
supplies nearby so that we can access them
in a comfortable manner. So I'll be using a simple pencil and we're going to start
with a basic sketch. You can simply observe the
way I'm using my pencil. You do not have
to apply a lot of pressure on your pencil
to get a dark sketch. We are just going to create a light sketch
using this pencil, and then we are going to ink
it using a black marker. You can observe I'm starting
with a big structure which is a little bit off
center onto the right inside. You can add these
little vertical towers on the topmost portion. Slowly, I'll be adding two more building
structures around it. It's a combination of horizontal and vertical lines together. There is no specific
way of sketching it. You can simply follow
the steps carefully. I'm adding these
triangular shapes on the roof, and similarly, we're going to add
vertical lines to create a nice big structure. You can observe that I'm adding multiple pencil
strokes to create horizontal and vertical
lines together. No need to worry
about perfection. I'll be adding a
simple house element on the right hand side, which is completely
in an abstract form. No need to convert it into
a complete structure. You can leave these
strokes in between slowly. You can observe that it takes a nice look of a house
in the right handside. Now we're going to add some
minor details by just adding a simple vertical line on the topmost surface
of the big structure. Then I'll be adding two
little windows in between. It is going to be pointed
on the topmost portion. It's a combination
of two slant lines and some horizontal
lines together. You can also add these
little small windows in between the structure. No need to draw the sketch in the exact same way I'm
drawing right now in case you want to create your own composition and there might be a little
bit of difference also, it is completely fine. Now I'll be adding few more structure to
the entire castle. I'm just adding
these dome shaped, smaller structure on
the left hand side. Slowly, you can
observe it carefully. Again, it's a combination
of two curves together, some horizontal and
vertical lines, and you can connect it with
the initial structure. Now similarly, we're going to add another roof
element which is a little bit similar
to the house which we drew initially. I'll be adding
these slant lines. The pencil line
basically acts as a reference point where you can apply the marker afterwards. In case your pencil sketch
is not that much perfect, it is completely fine. You can make it better while you're applying blacking to it, since it is an abstract
form of painting. No need to worry about
perfection as well. I'll be adding these
little slant lines to the first house that
we sketched as well. Now the basic sketch is ready. Let us apply some black
ink to the entire sketch so that it looks a little bit more aesthetic and attractive. Also, it will create
a nice contrast with the solid white
surface in the background. Adding an outline using a marker is going to be
a very satisfying step. You just have to follow the
pencil line and no need to worry about covering the entire pencil
line completely. You can add few more extra
strokes also if you want to, whenever you're applying
an outline using a marker, always make sure that
you do not hurry. Try to keep your hand
very much loose and free. No need to make it stiff. Also, one thing that you can observe carefully is
that wherever there is an intersection of lines or two lines are
joining together, there is a small black
dot that you can observe. It will happen
automatically only, and it looks really nice. When we apply some
beautiful watercolors, this basically creates
some nice depth and details to the
entire sketch. You can observe
that I'm following the horizontal and
vertical lines together. Now, there is no pencil
line for reference, but I'm going to add
these little details. Adding these
rectangular shapes in this particular area using
the marker directly. Also, when it comes
to tiny details, always make sure that you
use the tip of your marker carefully, as you can observe. Slowly, I'm moving towards
the entire structure that we have sketched on the
left hand side as well. There are going to
be elements where I have not applied
the pencil line. You can add the details according to your
convenience as well. It's just a combination of horizontal and vertical
lines together. You can fill in some
solid black color in the internal details as well. Just simply follow the steps and carefully follow the
pencil line as well. Wherever you want to add some extra details
using your marker, it is completely fine. We are almost done covering the entire sketch using this
beautiful black marker. You can observe that I'm adding a few more details by adding these little
rectangular shapes in between for these
smaller windows. Also, you can just simply
apply this small black patch. And then we have these
detailed windows where you can apply
some double lines. Then I'll be adding the
solid black line to the house that we have sketched in the right hand side as well. If you observe carefully, there is a nice black dot
on the ends of the lines. It basically creates a lot of details and depth to
the entire sketch. Right now, you can observe
a beautiful contrast of the black color with the
solid white background that we have for the
watercolor paper. One thing that I would
like to tell you all is that right
now you're observing the screen and maybe painting
or sketching it with me. Whenever you're observing
a real structure and you're sketching and
painting on the live location, the experience is
completely different. But right now, you can
definitely observe the techniques of
sketching and painting. This will help you
a lot whenever you're visiting any
live location and you observe any
beautiful structure that you want to sketch or paint. Now let us add
some water colors. The colors that
you will need for this particular project
is light green, deep green, and black. No need to worry at
all in case you have a simple shade of green that will also work completely fine. I'll be using my round rush of size seven and in
my color palette, I'll be taking a
good combination of light green and
dark green together. Make a good composition of
water and color together. Start applying it on the
bigger structure initially. No need to worry at all. In case you leave any
space in between. It is completely fine since it's an abstract
form of painting. Wherever you want to get a
darker shade of the color, just make sure that you
have less amount of water and more color
in your brush. In case you find
that your brush is having axis amount of
water in your brush, just simply dab it onto
the tissue paper so that axis amount of water will be removed and you'll be having
a nice saturated color. You can observe the way
I'm moving my brush. I'm using the tip of my brush to apply the color
in smaller portions. Now I'll be taking
some good amount of dark green color and
I'll be applying it in the structures
that we have created on either sides
of the bigger tower. No need to worry about
the solid black patch that we have applied
using the marker. It will not spread easily now. Similarly, I'll be painting
the second structure as well. Wherever you want to create some nice depth to the
entire building structure, you can take some darker tone of the color and you can
dab your brush onto the tissue paper to
remove axis amount of water so that you can get
a darker saturated color. I'll be applying the
color to the roof of the house structure
that we have created. In the right hand side, you can simply apply a small
patch of the color and create these slant lines
using your brush directly. No need to worry
about painting it in the exact same way I'm
painting right now. You can apply the color in
your own manner as well. You can also carefully
observe that I have left some white spaces
in between and it looks really nice and abstract
whenever you are taking up urban sketching
and live location, specially to create
some darker tone in the right hand side of
the entire house structure, I have applied some
deep green in between. Now I'll be painting the
remaining structure as well. If you observe carefully on the topmost portion
of the tower, I applied a darker
tone of the color. And then you can add some water to spread the color
automatically. The best part about
water colors is that you do not have to
worry about perfection. You can randomly apply the color and water
together and it will spread automatically
and you'll get a very unpredictable output. Right now, you can
observe a combination of light green and deep
green together, which is basically
a darker tone of green in case you want to
use a monotonous color. And it's going to be
a simple green color that is completely fine. Now again, I applied
some darker tone of the color and then added some water and you can observe a beautiful gradient effect
in the entire structure. Also, at the same time, I left some white
space in between, which looks really nice when
the entire color dries up. You can observe carefully
how easy it is to apply water color to the entire
basic sketch that we created. Trust me, it's a
very satisfying part to create some shadow effect in this particular structure. I'm taking some deep green. I'm just adding a
highly saturated, darker green color in the bottom portion of
the building structure so that it creates
some nice depth and details to the
entire sketch. In case you're not that much
confident enough to apply the watercolors directly
towards your detailed sketch. What you can do is you
can practice it on a rough scrape of
paper initially, and then you can come
towards your final painting. This will help you a lot to develop confidence
while painting, and the chances of making
mistakes will be very less. I painted the entire roof in
the left hand side as well, and I left some white spaces
in between, knowingly only. And it creates some
nice abstract form to the entire
building structure. The best part about
water colors is that it gives you a nice,
unpredictable output. You can add a darker tone afterwards as well. It
is completely fine. Now I'll be using
my thick marker, which is having a thick
tip of solid black color, which is basically
a calligraphy pen. You can use any other
good alternative as well, which is having a thick
tip and can give you a nice solid black color in
a darker and thicker manner. We are not going to cover the entire outline of the
entire building structure, we are just going to apply this solid black line
in certain portions. Once we apply water colors, the outline gets a little bit
dull and the saturation of solid black color that we using a thin marker will
definitely decrease. That's why I'm using a
thicker marker this time. And we're going to just make some nice depth and details
to the entire sketch by applying the lines in
certain areas only you don't have to cover the entire outline of the
building structure. Also, remember, whenever you
are using a thick marker, also just try to keep your
hand very much loose and free. No need to make it stiff to increase the saturation of the solid black color that we have applied in the windows. You can use the same marker and add multiple strokes to make a solid black patch
a little bit more saturated in the slant line. Also, you can observe that the saturation of
the black line will increase and it creates some more abstract effect
to the entire sketch. Trust me on this, it is a very
random and natural way of applying these thick lines of
solid black color as well. No need to worry
about applying it in the same way I'm
applying right now. You can just do it in a very
random and natural way. Now let us create some nice abstract effect in
the background, which is basically the sky area. I'll be taking some nice
combination of tark green, which is deep green and
light green together. Add a little bit of water. Simply tap your finger onto the brush and splatter
some color in the background area
in case your color is getting splattered on
the building structure. That is also fine. Now simply take
your spray bottle and spray some water
in the background. In case you do not
have a spray bottle, you can directly
apply water using your brush directly in
the background area. You'll observe that
the color will automatically spread in
the background area. Now simply take
your clean brush, add a little bit of water, and just blend the colors together in the background area. No need to worry
about perfection. You can already observe
that the color is getting spreaded in a
very abstract manner. You can also observe that
the dots get a little bit less saturated when we apply some water to
the entire background. Now in order to make it look a little bit more
aesthetic and attractive, you can take some more color, add a little bit of water, and simply tap your
finger onto the brush, and you can splatter some more color in the background area. The color basically gets onto the paper in the form
of these little dots, which is having
variation in sizes. You can observe a
beautiful combination of the background color and the entire
building structure. In case you want to
add a little bit of more color in the area
that is completely white, you can take some more color
from the color palette and mix it and blend it
with the entire background. I'll be using a
simple pencil to add these little strokes in a very
random and natural manner. No need to worry about applying these strokes in the exact
same way I have applied. You can create your own
combination and apply it in a very random manner to make it look a little bit
more attractive. You can add your name or any positive quote in case you want to add to
the entire painting. I'm just writing my name and
urban sketching in the side. Also in a vertical format, you can add your name or any tag line that you want to
add to the entire painting. It can be any positive at also, you can write it according
to your convenience, whatever you're
comfortable with. I'll be taking some nice
teal and eruline blue. And we're going to enhance the entire building structure by adding these little
patches of the color. We're not going to cover the
entire building structure. I'm just applying it
in certain portions to make a good contrast with the green color that
we have applied. I'm using my same round
brush of size seven. You can observe that I'm just adding it in certain portions, in a very small area by
adding these little patches, it's a combination of teal
and Celine blue together. In case you do not
have the exact shade of the color, it is
completely fine. You can use a simple
blue color as well. I'll be adding a little bit
of water and simply tapping my finger onto the brush to splatter some
blue color as well. We are done with the
entire painting. Let me take you a little
bit closer so that you can observe all
the details carefully. It's a combination of a beautiful sketch and
watercolors together. We have also added a little bit of text in the entire painting. I hope that you enjoyed
the class project. Now let us move towards
the next painting.
8. Painting 2 - The Lantern: Everybody, you're most welcome
to the second painting, which is the lantern. As you can observe, I'm ready
with my watercolor paper. This time we're going to draw the sketch in a vertical format. I'm starting by drawing
a simple horizontal line and two slant lines in
opposite directions. Then we're going to convert them into these rectangular shapes. Now just create one
vertical line and attach it with the slant lines that we have created initially. No need to hurry at all. Take your time and try to
create a basic sketch. Also, no need to
worry about drawing it in the exact same way
I'm drawing right now. There might be a little bit of difference and it
is absolutely fine. Slowly, we have drawn the entire topmost portion
of the entire lantern. Now I will slowly draw the
body of the entire lantern. These are simple vertical lines which are coming a
little bit closer to each other since
the structure is a little bit smaller
in the bottom portion. And then you have to
again connect it with horizontal and slant
lines on either sides, convert it into these
small rectangular shapes. You can double the lines for the vertical
lines that we have drawn so that it gives a nice depth to the
entire structure. There is going to be a small
light in the center portion. You can just draw an oval shape, connect it with a cylindrical
shape in between. Now in the bottom portion, the structure is very simple. You just have to draw these
small semicircular shapes and just attach it with
one vertical line. There is going to be some basic, simple building element
in the background. It's a simple combination of horizontal and vertical
lines together. No need to worry
about drawing it in the exact same way I'm
drawing right now. You can create your own
composition as well. Now I'm going to draw
some abstract leaves that are going to be a part of
the entire composition. You can just draw a random
line in this way and connect it with these leaves which are having
variation in sizes. In case you want to
change the position of the leaves and draw it
according to your convenience, it is completely fine. Now let us start giving a noise blacking to
the entire sketch. I'll be using my
marker, which is black, and I'm going to apply
it onto the pencil line. No need to hurry at all. Whenever you're
giving an outline, you just have to be
very much careful and try to keep your hand
very much loose and free. No need to make it stiff. The entire step is
very easy and simple. You just have to follow
the pencil line. Also, apart from
the pencil line, we can add few more details
using black marker. It is completely fine.
The pencil sketch basically gives us a basic structure of the entire sketch. And then we add these
beautiful details and depth to the entire sketch. By adding the beautiful
black marker, you can observe the way I'm applying the strokes
in the entire sketch. You can also observe
the way there is a nice black dot
which is forming on the intersection of
the entire lines or wherever two
lines are meeting. It basically gives a nice aesthetic to the
entire sketch as well. You can already observe a
beautiful contrast with the white background and the blank inc that we're
applying right now. Similarly, we are going to apply the black ink in the
background portion as well. Again, you just have to apply the horizontal and
vertical lines. And you can use
the same marker to apply the outline for
the leaves as well. You can observe that I'm
leaving the lines in between only not giving
it in a complete manner. You can use this technique
whenever you are converting any particular
sketch into an abstract manner. Now using the same marker, we can add few nice details
to the entire sketch. You can add these
little horizontal lines in the entire structure. We can also just create a nice solid patch for the
body of the entire lantern. It creates a nice
solid black patch, which will be really nice. In contrast, when we apply
the watercolors as well, whenever you're traveling
and you visit any new place, you will definitely observe
these beautiful details. In urban sketching, lantern
is a part of lighting. Wherever you find a beautiful
lamppost or any lighting, you will observe that it is well detailed and it
looks really nice. You can just take out
your sketchbook and start sketching it on the
live location as well. Right now, you're
observing the way I'm sketching and drawing
the entire sketch. But whenever you are visiting to a particular location and you are doing it on
the live location, whenever you're observing
a beautiful element and you're sketching
it on the spot. There's a different fun in that the water colors that we are
going to use are deep green, light green, cadmium,
orange, and black. I'll be using my same
round brush of size seven. I have taken some good
amount of water and just a thin coat of water we are applying initially near
the light element. Then we are going to
take some good amount of cadmium orange in the brush. In case you find that the
color is highly saturated, you can take some good
amount of water and you'll observe the color
will spread automatically. There is a highly saturated
color near the light, and then you can apply
some water around. Wherever you want to have
a highly saturated color, you just have to
make sure that you have less amount of
water and more color. Wherever you want to spread the color and decrease
the saturation, just apply some good
amount of water, you'll observe that
the saturation of the color will
decrease automatically. Now I'll be making a good
combination of deep green and light green together and mix it well in the
color palette. Make a good composition of
color and water together. Wherever you want a darker tone, try to have less amount
of water and dab your brush onto the tissue
paper you can observe. We have got a beautiful
contrast with the cadmium orange color that
we have applied initially. Similarly, I'll be applying the green color in the
bottom structure as well. I wanted a darker tone in
the left hand portion. I have taken some good
amount of deep green there. The best part about
watercolors is that you can apply it in a very
random and natural manner. No need to worry
about perfection in abstract painting, of course. Similarly, I have
applied the color in the vertical structure of
the entire lantern as well. You can already observe
a beautiful contrast of the entire outline
that we created using black ink and the watercolors that we have applied right now. One thing that I
can tell you about watercolors is that you
have to make sure that the saturated color that you observe while
you're applying the color will be definitely one shade lighter when the
entire painting dries. You can accordingly set the
amount of water and color together Now in order to create a beautiful
abstract background in a very random
and natural way, only just apply the color in
this beautiful, random way. No need to worry
about painting it in the exact same way I'm
painting right now. You can easily follow the steps. I'm just applying
the combination of deep green and light green color together in the outer portion, apart from the lantern. Wherever you want to have a
nice darker tone of color, just take less amount of water
and apply the color patch. And whenever you want to
spread it in a nice way, just apply some
more water around it and the color will
automatically spread. The entire process is really
very much satisfying, and you'll love to do this
also in case you're not that much confident
enough to apply the watercolors directly
towards your final sketch, and you do not want to spoil your beautiful black
sketch as well. Then what you can do
is you can practice it on a rough scrape
of paper initially, and then you can come
towards your final painting. This will help you
a lot to develop confidence while applying
the watercolors. And the chances of making
mistakes will also be very less to increase the saturation of the color in the
lantern as well. I'm applying another coat using some darker tones of deep green
and light green together. As I told you, this is also a beautiful part
about water colors, that you can apply multiple
layers of the colors as well. The reason behind not completing the entire outline for
the leaves is that we want to highlight the entire lantern and keep the background a
little bit lighter. That's why I have not
completed the entire outline and I have just applied it in a very random
and natural way. Now to enhance the leaves, you can just make a good
combination of cadmium orange. You can also take deep green
and light green together. You can mix and match
different colors together, create your own composition. You're definitely free
to explore right now. You can observe that I have
painted the leaves and I'm using the tip of my round
rush basically to paint. In this smaller portion, I have also applied a nice lighter shade
of cadmium orange, having more amount of
water and less color. And you can observe beautiful light shade leaves on
the right hand side. Let me tell you a
beautiful thing about urban sketching that you can right now observe
that there is no specific way of
applying colors. Whenever you're done
with the entire sketch, you can observe the way I'm
randomly moving my brush. And you'll definitely enjoy
this particular process. Now I have taken a
good combination of deep green and light
green together and simply tap your finger onto the brush to splatter the color in the entire painting in a very random and
natural way only. Just do not splatter
the color inside the lantern and just
spray some water around. You can directly apply water
using your brush as well. In case you do not
have a spray bottle, you will observe
that the color will automatically spread
in the surroundings. You can already observe a very natural spreading of the color in the entire
surface of the paper. You can take some
more color using your brush and you can apply
it in this random way. Just simply dab your brush to the paper surface and the color will
automatically spread. The entire step is
very much satisfying whenever you want to create a beautiful abstract background. Now right now you're observing
a beautiful green color, but it will be definitely one shade lighter when the
entire background rise. That's why I'm taking some
good saturated color, having less amount of
water of deep green. I'm just applying it
in this random manner. Also, you can splatter
it around and you'll observe a nice bouquet effect in the entire
background as well. I'm just applying
some more color on the right hand side
by just taking some good amount of light
green and deep green together. These beautiful dots, which are getting blurred
will also replicate some beautiful leaves which are far away from the lantern
in the background, you can observe that
we are almost done creating a beautiful
abstract background. And the lantern is also done
with the entire watercolors. To replicate some
beautiful flowers, just take some good
amount of cadmium orange, a brush in this random manner. Now, as you can observe
that we are done applying water colors
to the entire sketch. And once we apply
the water colors, the black color that we
applied using our thin marker, we'll definitely get
a little bit less saturated in order to make the sketch look a
little bit more attractive. And in contrast with
the background color, what we are going to do is that I'll be taking my thick marker, which is basically
a calligraphy pen. It is having a thick black tip, and we're going to enhance
the solid black lines. We are not going to cover the entire outline
of the basic sketch, but we're going to apply it
in certain portions only. This particular step
will be definitely increasing the saturation
of the solid black color. And your entire sketch will look a little bit more vibrant. The entire lantern
will get a nice depth. If you observe carefully, I'm applying the marker
in a very random way, only there is no
specific way of applying it using the tip of my marker. I will also enhance the light element in
the center portion. I'll be telling you
the same thing, even if you're working
with a thick marker, always try to keep your hand
very much loose and free. No need to make it
very much stiff. Apply multiple strokes to get a rough and random line rather than getting
a perfect line. Also, in case you are not
that much confident enough to reapply the thick marker
towards your entire painting, what you can do is you
can practice it on a rough scrape of
paper initially, and then you can come
towards your final painting. This will help you a lot to develop confidence
while painting, and the chances of making
mistakes will be very less. I'll be adding a nice
text using my blue pen, which is lantern and abstract. You can write any
positive quote or any text you want to add
towards your entire painting. It is completely
fine and up to you. Now, let me take you a
little bit closer so that you can observe the entire
painting carefully. I hope that you enjoyed this particular class project and got to learn something new. Now let us move towards
the next class project.
9. Painting 3 - The Palace: Everybody, you're most welcome
to the third painting, which I have named
as The Palace. In this particular painting, we are drawing the sketch
in the horizontal format. I'm starting from
the topmost portion by creating a
triangulated structure. I'll be using my
simple pencil and we are going to create a
rough sketch initially. Then by following two vertical
lines on either side, we are going to complete
the entire structure. Now I'm going to add these two slant lines
on either sides. And then you can
follow it by adding a rectangular shape on
the bottom portion. No need to hurry at all. The three basic steps
basically includes a basic pencil sketch that
we're drawing right now. Now after that,
we're going to apply black ink to the entire
sketch and then water colors. If you observe carefully, it's a combination of horizontal and vertical lines together in case you want to create your own composition of the
entire building structure, it is completely fine. You can just follow
the basic steps. At times, we can directly sketch using a
black marker also, but the pencil line acts
as a basic reference for you to follow the lines and create your sketch
in a perfect manner. Also, at times, in case
there are certain mistakes, you can definitely erase
them using a simple eraser. Now, in order to add
some minute details, I'll be adding these
circular shapes in between some little
rectangular shapes. You can add these little
windows by having a semicircular shape on
the topmost portion. Now, apart from
the main structure that we have drawn right now, we're going to add a nice dome, which is a part of
the entire palace. You can just add a huge
semicircular shape beside the first structure, and then connect
these curved lines. No need to hurry at all. Try to draw it in a very
slow and steady manner. Try to keep your hand very much loose and free whenever
you're sketching. Now on the topmost portion
of the entire dome, we're going to add a little
semicircular shape as well. You can connect it with
two vertical lines. I'm just doubling the
curved lines that I have drawn to add some nice details to the entire dome structure. The best part about
urban sketching, or I can say abstract sketching, is that even if you are drawing the sketch
on the live location, it is not at all compulsory
that your sketch has to be completely same as the
building structure that you are seeing. Similarly, if you're following the steps that I'm
doing right now, and if you are in case
sketching it with me, no need to worry at
all in case there are minor differences between
your sketch and mine. It is completely fine because it is an
abstract sketching. We are done with the basic
sketch using a pencil. Now let us add a nice black
line using our black marker. It is having a thin tip. It's a very simple
and easy technique. You just have to follow
the pencil line apart from the pencil line in
case you want to add additional details to
the entire sketch. That is also completely fine
if you observe carefully, the entire black line basically enhances
your entire sketch. It creates a beautiful contrast with the solid white
background of the paper. A nice tip that I can give you while you are
giving an outline to any particular sketch is try to hold your
black pen or marker, whatever art supply that
you're using to give an outline to the entire sketch in a very free and loose manner. No need to make your
hand very much stiff and don't be afraid of getting random and rough strokes
in your entire sketch. It is a part of
abstract sketching. Uh, now, wherever we have minute details like
small windows and little structure elements
in the entire building, what you can do is you can add a solid black patch in
this particular portion. This will help you to create a nice contrast in
the entire sketch, even after we apply
the watercolors. Also, we are almost done adding an outline to the entire structure on
the left hand portion. Now slowly, I'll
be moving towards the right hand side where
we have this huge dome. There are double
lines of pencils. You can follow them carefully. You can even add minute details using your marker directly. Now in the bottom portion, we have these huge vertical
lines that you can follow. Also, in case you're not that
much confident enough to apply the marker directly
towards your pencil sketch, what you can do is
you can practice it on a rough scrape of paper and then you can come
towards your final sketching. This will help you a lot to develop confidence
while painting, and the chances of making
mistakes will be very less. Now, if you observe
in the entire palace, where we have this
huge dome structure, I have added few minor details directly through my marker. I'll be taking my
thick marker now, which is basically a
calligraphy pen only, and I'll be adding these solid
black patches in between. We are not going to apply
the thick marker to the entire sketch
that we have created using the pencil just in certain portion where we want to create some
nice shadow effect. This basically helps us to give a nice depth and detail
to the entire sketch. Now the watercolors that we're going to use are deep green, light green, cadmium,
orange, and black. Using all the four
colors together, we are going to complete
the watercolor painting. I've taken some clear
water and applied it in a very random way near
the huge structure. Now take a good combination
of deep green and light green together and apply the color in the
building portion. In the topmost portion, you'll observe that the
color spreads automatically. No need to worry about that. It is a part of the
abstract painting that we are creating right now. Wherever you want to
spread the color, you have to take some
good amount of water and apply its patch near
the saturated color. And you'll observe
that the color will automatically spread. Whenever you want to have
a highly saturated color, try to have less amount
of water and more color. This will give you a highly pigmented and saturated color. Now I have taken some cadmium
orange and combined it with the deep green that we have applied on the topmost portion. The colors are right now, wet. You'll observe a
nice combination of both the colors together. They will automatically blend. You can observe a
beautiful combination of both the colors right now. In case you want to create your own combination
of the colors, it is completely fine. I've taken a highly saturated
cadmium orange color, applied it on the
right hand portion of the building structure. Then I'm taking some
good amount of water, and I have applied a nice
patch in a very random way. Only you will observe that the color spreads
automatically. There are also certain white
spaces left in between, and it is completely fine. It looks really
nice and classic. Wherever you want to increase the saturation of the color, you can definitely reapply
another layer of water colors. Try to have less amount
of water and more color. In case you find that there is more amount of water
in your brush, just simply dab it
onto the tissue paper. That's why it is important to
keep a tissue paper nearby. Now let us paint the huge
dome on the right hand side. I have applied a thin coat
of water in a random way. You'll also observe
the marker line getting spreaded and
it looks really nice. I'll be taking some deep green
and light green together. Apply it on the palace surface and you'll observe
that the color will spread automatically. Again, I have applied the color patch in a
very random way only. You will also observe
the spread of the color in the background
in a very natural way. Now, let us add some cadmium
orange here as well. You just have to take it in
your round brush of size seven and combine it with the green color that we
have applied initially. One thing that I can tell you
about water colors is that the saturation of the
color that you're observing right now when
the colors are wet, will be one shade lighter When the color dries up accordingly, you have to create
a combination and composition of water
and color together. Wherever you want to have
a nice saturated color, just try to have less amount
of water and more color. I've added a nice
dark green patch on the right hand side apart
from the dome structure, which creates a
beautiful contrast. Now take some deep
green and light green together and tap your
finger onto the brush. You'll observe that the color will splatter on the background. Try to splatter the color around the palace surface and simply
spray some water around. Now in case you do not
have a spray bottle, you can directly
spread the colors using your brush as well. I'll be taking some
cadmium orange and I'll be applying
it on the corner. There is already water
in the background, or I can say the paper surface. The color will spread
automatically and it will get a nice blend with
the green color as well. You can simply add some
water and randomly move your brush to make a
nice abstract background. You can already observe
a beautiful contrast of the entire palace with the solid white
background of the paper. I'm just taking some cadmium
orange and I'm applying a darker tone of the color
on the right hand side. Try to have less amount
of water and more color. If you want to spread the color, you can take some water from the container to create
some more depth. I have added some black, and I'm just splattering
the color around. Now let us add some
beautiful text to the entire sketch
that we have created. I'm writing urban sketching. On the topmost portion, you can write any
positive quote or any text that you want
to add to your painting. We are done with the
entire painting. Let me take you a little
bit closer so that you can observe all
the details carefully. You can observe how using
three basic steps, sketching, inking, and painting, we have created this beautiful
urban painting. I hope that you enjoyed
this particular painting. Now let us move towards
the next class project.
10. Painting 4 - The Window: Everybody, you're
most welcome to the fourth painting,
which is the window. As you can observe,
I'm ready with my watercolor paper and in this particular class predict we are drawing in a
vertical format. There's going to be a beautiful, elegant window and
we are starting with a basic rough sketch
using a pencil. I've drawn two
rectangular shapes having some space in between. And we're going to connect it by drawing a simple
semicircular shape. I've drawn one
semicircular shape. On the top of that you can draw a small rectangular shape. Then I have repeated the
curves on either sides. This is basically considered as the frame structure
of the entire window, which is on the topmost portion. Now we're going to
add vertical lines on either sides to complete the entire framework
of the window. No need to hurry at all. Try to draw the basic sketch in a very slow and
steady manner. Whenever you try to
draw a rough sketch, always try to keep your hand
very much loose and free. No need to make it stiff. I've added two more
rectangular shapes on the bottom portion, and then I'm adding
two vertical lines. As you can observe,
we are almost done creating the outline
of the entire window, which is basically the
out frame structure. I have added these little
rectangular shapes on the bottom portion
to enhance the details. Now I'll be adding the window, which is going to be in
a rectangular format. And then you can divide it
into two different parts by adding a simple vertical
line in between. Then I'm adding
few minor details, by adding a circular shape
on the topmost portion, you can observe that it's a basic sketch and you don't have to worry
about perfection. Wherever you want to
add minute details, you can add these little horizontal and vertical
lines together. Whenever you observe
any building structure you want to draw it, always start with basic lines to create its basic structure. No need to worry
about perfection. And drawing it in the exact
same way you're observing it. There can be minor difference
and it is completely fine. No need to worry about that. I've added a fence element
in the right hand portion and I'll be adding few
plantations or you can consider it as
small bushes on the left hand portion which is moving towards the
topmost portion as well. You can just create
some nice bushy texture and add these rough
random lines. You can also add tiny
little leaves also. Now let us start applying some beautiful black outline to the entire basic sketch that we have created
using pencil, you just have to follow
the pencil line. Also, where we have not
applied the pencil, you can add minute details using your black
marker directly. Also, you can add
small black patches wherever you want to create some shadow effect and
depth to the entire sketch. The first step is basically creating a simple pencil sketch, and then now we are
doing the second step, which is inking
the entire sketch. The reason behind applying a solid black outline
to the entire sketch is that it will create a nice depth and details
to the entire sketch. Your sketch will have a
beautiful contrast with the solid white background
of the watercolor paper. It will also help
you a lot to observe the sketch carefully while
you're applying watercolors. Now, in the left hand portion, if you observe carefully, I have not given the
outline completely. I have just randomly apply
the strokes using my marker. As I told you that it is an
abstract way of sketching, No need to worry
about perfection. I'll be adding these
minute details in the entire sketch by creating these rectangular
shapes in between. One thing that I would like
to suggest to you all is that whenever you are using
a pencil or a marker, just try to keep your
hand very much loose and free while you're applying
it to your sketch. No need to make your hand stiff. Just move it freely and
apply these strokes. Now I'm slowly moving towards the main window element to add some nice
solid black line. You can just reapply some more vertical and
horizontal strokes to make the solid black patch look a little bit more thicker. In the bottom portion, we have few minor details
that are small, rectangular shapes
that we can create. The benefit of
using a thin marker right now is about
creating minute details. In order to get
thick black patches, we are going to use a
thicker marker now. Similarly, I'll be
creating the outline of the fence element that we have in the right
hand side as well. You can create these
tiny little black dots in the intersection
of the lines. That will look really nice
when we apply the watercolors. I'll be using my thick marker, which is basically
a calligraphy pen, which is having a thick tip. And we're going to add
these solid black lines, which are a little bit thicker. We are not going to apply this thick marker on the
entire outline of the sketch. We are just going to apply it randomly in certain portions only where we have this
beautiful bushy effect, which is basically
some nice plantation in the left hand portion there, we are going to create these
solid black patches in certain areas to create some nice depth
and shadow effect. Now let us start with the
water colors as well. We are going to use deep green, cadmium orange, light green, and black for the
entire painting. No need to worry at all
in case you want to use your own color
palette and play with the colors and create
your own variation. It is completely fine. You can explore and experiment according to your convenience. I've taken some clear water in my roundbrush of size seven. Apply a nice coat of water on the entire
building structure. Of course, in a very
random and natural way, only no specific
way of applying it. Now I have taken some good
saturated cadmium orange, having less amount of water, and just apply it on
the window structure and the details that we have applied on the topmost portion. Now simultaneously,
you have to take some nice deep green and
light green together. Apply to the remaining
structure of the window. No need to worry at all in case your color goes out of the line. It is completely fine. It's an abstract
form of painting, so no need to take it
that much seriously. In fact, you can randomly
just keep your brush out of the line and create
this nice abstract background. Also, one thing that
you can keep in mind is wherever you want to have
a highly saturated color, try to have more amount of color and less water
in your brush. Wherever you want to have
a lighter shade of color, or you want the color to spread in a very random
and natural way, try to have more amount of
water and less color slowly. You can observe that in the outer frame of
the entire window, I have taken a darker tone of green and we have applied
it very naturally. Only wherever you find that there is a smaller
portion to paint, you can use the tip
of your round brush and you can apply it in the
smaller portion to paint it carefully in case you're not
that much confident enough to apply the
watercolors directly towards your ininged sketch. What you can do is you
can practice it on a rough scrape of
paper initially, and then you can come
towards your final painting. This will help you a lot to develop confidence
while painting, and the chances of making
mistakes will be very less now. Similarly, we want to create
some abstract background in the left hand portion where we have created these
beautiful bushes. I'm just taking some
water from the container. Apply a thin coat of water
in a very random way. Only now there is
already water present. You can take some nice light green and dark
green together. Apply it in the bushes. You will observe
that the colors will automatically spread
in the background. You can even use the tip of your round brush to paint
these little leaves around. One thing that I would
like to tell you all is that no need to worry about painting it in the exact same way I'm
painting right now. You can create your
own composition of the entire structure as well. You can play with the
color combination. You can explore and paint it according
to your convenience. It is completely fine. In fact, it would be really
great if you experiment with the building structure and
the color combination. You can simply follow
the techniques of sketching and painting. We are almost done applying the water colors to
the entire sketch. Now let us increase the
saturation of certain colors to create some nice depth and details to the
entire painting. For that, you need
to have less amount of water and more
color in your brush. In case you find that there is axis amount of water
in your brush, you can simply dab
your brush onto the tissue paper and remove
axis amount of water from it. Now I've taken some good deep green and light
green together. And simply tap your
finger onto the brush to splatter some color around the entire window in
a very random way. Only then you can use your
spray bottle and spray some water around in case you
do not have a spray bottle, you can directly use your
brush having some water in it. We are just basically creating an abstract background
around the window so that it gives a nice classic look to the entire urban sketch
that we have created. No need to hurry at all. Take your time and try to create this beautiful abstract effect. You can take some more color
from the color palette to increase the saturation
of the color as well. You can simply dab
your brush onto the background and
you'll observe a beautiful spread of the color. You can also splatter the color again by simply papping
your finger onto the brush. And I'm repeating myself, no need to worry about getting the exact same output or painting it in the exact same
way I'm painting right now. There will be a minor difference between your painting and mine
and it is completely fine, so no need to worry about that. In fact, your
abstract effect will also vary and it is
completely okay. I've taken some good amount
of saturated cadmium orange, having less amount
of water in it. And I'm just reapplying it in certain portion to
increase its saturation, to basically create
some nice depth and details to the
entire painting. Now let us add some
text to the sketch. I'm writing abstract
and urban sketching, You can write any
positive quote or any text that you
find convenient. It is completely fine. Now let me take you
a little bit closer so that you can observe
all the details carefully. Using three easy steps, we have created this
beautiful painting. I hope that you enjoyed creating this particular painting and
got to learn something new. Now let us move towards
the next class project.
11. Painting 5 - The Dome: Hey, hey buddy. You're
most welcome to the fifth painting
which is the dome. As you can observe,
I'm ready with my watercolor paper and in
this particular class project, it is going to be in
a vertical format. We are starting from
the topmost portion, draw a simple vertical line and two small semicircular
shape just below that. Then we are going to
have a huge dome, which is going to be, again,
a semicircular shape. Below that, I'm going to draw
a simple horizontal line, which is going to replicate
a nice building structure. You can just convert it
into a rectangular shape, and on either side you can have two small
rectangles as well. Now I'll be connecting
it with vertical lines, which is a part of the
entire building structure. Then we have a nice
house element. In the bottom portion, there is going to be this
simple triangular shape. And you can just give
it a double line and then connect it with a
small horizontal line. Then we're going to add
these little vertical lines to add some minute details
to the entire sketch. Whenever you're drawing
a sketch using a pencil, no need to hurry at all. Try to keep your hand very
much loose and free and just simply convert these
horizontal and vertical lines together to form a simple
building structure in case you're not that
much confident enough to draw a sketch directly
using your marker. It is always good to carry a simple pencil and create
a basic sketch using it. Now below the house element, I have added this nice
semicircular door and added few vertical lines inside it so that we can add
some minute details. It is not at all
compulsory for you to draw the entire sketch in the exact same way I'm
drawing right now. You can create your
own composition of the entire sketch as well. I have added few minor details in the entire dome
structure as well. Whenever you try to create an initial sketch
using a pencil, always try to make sure that it is very much light and rough. We are almost done with
the entire sketch. Now we are going to
apply the black marker. I'll be taking my
marker with a thin tip, and we're going to start
with the topmost portion. No need to hurry at all. Just simply follow
the pencil line. It is not at all
compulsory that you cannot add additional strokes
using your marker. You can definitely
add few more strokes. Don't worry about drawing it in the exact same way I'm
drawing right now. Also, you'll find it
very satisfying to add these beautiful black lines
to the entire sketch. It is one of the most
satisfying part. The best part about
urban sketching is that whenever you visit any particular location or you find any interesting
building element, you can simply observe it carefully and start
sketching it out. You just don't have
to worry about perfection and no
need to worry about drawing it in the exact same way the structure is looking. There can be minor differences
and it is completely fine. Trust me right now, you
might be observing the way I'm drawing and you must
be even drawing with me. But when you try to draw it in a live location where you find a beautiful
building element, you observe it
carefully and try to draw it on the location
there's a different piece. And satisfaction
in that at times. You can also take out
your cell phones, take good pictures of that particular element
or the entire building, then you can use the picture as reference and draw it later. You can create a variation
in the entire sketch. You can play with
the composition of the building elements. You can also create your own
color combination as well, in order to add minute details. I have added these
little vertical lines in the dome structure where
you have these tiny, rectangular shapes, a
small circular shape, and a small dome element in
the left hand side as well. Now similarly, we'll be
adding the marker to the house that we have sketched
in the bottom portion. You can carefully observe
that I have added vertical lines in the roof
of the house as well, and it looks really nice. You can apply multiple strokes
using your marker as well. Now, there is a simple door element in the center portion. Again, there is a combination of horizontal and vertical
lines together that you can observe carefully whenever you are applying an outline
using a marker, always make sure that your hand is very much loose and free. No need to make it stiff. If you observe carefully, there are these little
tiny black dots where the lines are intersecting
or at the end of the lines, which looks really nice when we apply the water
colors as well. Now, in order to add minute
details in the house as well, I have drawn these little
rectangular shapes in between. We're almost done inking the entire sketch that we
created using a pencil. I'll be using my thick marker, which is basically a
calligraphy pen only. But using this, we
can apply thick, black strokes. No
need to worry at all. We are not going to
cover the entire sketch using this thick marker. We're just going to apply
it in certain portions. It basically helps us to get some nice depth and details
to the entire sketch. You can observe
carefully that I'm applying the marker in
certain areas only. No need to worry at all in case you do not have
a thick marker. You can definitely
use your thin marker. Apply multiple strokes to get this nice thick black
patch wherever you want to create some
beautiful depth and details. You can carefully observe
that I have added some nice depth in the
entire door as well. Right now, you can observe
a beautiful contrast of the entire sketch with the
white paper in the background. The colors that we are
going to use are crimson, deep green, cadmium
orange, and light green. Now, once we are done
with the entire sketch, we're going to apply
water colors to the entire sketch in a very
random and rough manner. I have taken some water
from the container. I'll be using my round
brush of size seven. And I'm starting from
the topmost portion, applying a beautiful
patch of water slowly coming towards
the internal portion of the entire
building structure. It's a part of
abstract painting, so no need to worry
about perfection. The color might spread and it moves out of the line as well, and it is completely fine. I'm starting by taking
a good combination of light green and
deep green together. And we are just applying it
in the internal portion of the dome while working
with water colors. You can just keep in mind that wherever you want a
dark saturated color, try to have less amount
of water and more color. So I'll be taking
some cadmium, orange, and crimson together and just apply it in the walls
of the entire dome. And let the color flow into the house element in the
bottom portion as well, in a very random
and natural manner. No need to worry about
applying the color in the exact same way I'm
applying right now. You can create your own
composition and you can apply it in a very
random and natural way. It is completely fine if
you observe carefully, there might be some white spaces left in the entire sketch, and it is completely okay. It will look really nice and classic when the entire
watercolor dries. If you want a light
saturated color, what you have to do
is that try to have more amount of water
and less color, and you'll observe
that the color will spread automatically. Using this easy and
simple technique to increase water and decrease
water in the pigment, you can play with the variation in the shade of
the entire color. The color will get lighter when you add more
amount of water, and it will get
more saturated and darker if you have less amount
of water in your brush. In order to make the entire door look a little bit darker, I have applied crimson and
cadmium orange together to make a nice darker tone of color and applied it
in the entire door. You can add a little bit of
black as well right now. You can also observe that
the marker gets a little bit spreaded because we have
used a little bit of water. So it will automatically give us a nice depth and detail
to the entire painting. Also, if you observe carefully
on the top right corner, there is a very
random natural patch of water that is being done. It is a part of
abstract painting. No need to worry about your
painting to get spoiled. You can definitely cover it up by adding more colors
in the background. I'll be just taking
a good combination of deep green and light
green together and we are going to just
tap our finger onto the brush splatter some color around the entire
building structure, and spray some water using your spray bottle in case you
do not have a spray bottle, you can use your brush
directly as well. Now, once we have applied
some water in the background, you can take some more color in your brush and apply it
in a very random manner. You'll observe that the color will spread
automatically slowly. You'll observe a nice blend
of both the colors together. This basically creates a
nice abstract background with the building structure.
It is completely fine. Your abstract background
might vary from mine, and it might be a little bit different and it is
completely okay. In fact, in case you want to experiment with the color
combination in the background, it is completely fine. You can again tap
your finger onto the brush patter some
color in the background. You're free to explore
and experiment. This is how you can combine
these beautiful colors together and make a good combination of
abstract background. I'm taking some cadmium orange, and you can also take some
crimson if you want to. And add these little
patches in the background. Since the paper
is wet right now, so the color will spread
automatically and you'll get a beautiful blend of
both the colors together. We are done with the
entire painting. Let us add some
beautiful text to the entire painting
to make it look a little bit more aesthetic
and attractive. You can use any positive text
or quote you want to write. I'm just writing abstract
urban sketching. We are done with the
entire painting. Let me take you a little
bit closer so that you can observe all the
details carefully. I hope that you enjoyed creating this particular painting and
got to learn something new. You can use three basic steps to create this
beautiful painting. Now let us move towards
the next class project.
12. Painting 6 - Vintage House: Everybody, you're most
welcome to the last painting, which is the vintage House. So as you can observe, I'm ready with my watercolor paper, and again, it is going to
be in a vertical format. We are going to start by
using our simple pencil, and it's going to
be a vintage house. There is going to be
a triangulated roof on the topmost portion. Just draw simple two slant lines connecting together in
a triangular shape. And then you can
double the lines, draw a simple horizontal
line in between, and then two vertical
lines on either sides. There is going to be a huge
window in the center portion, which you can create
as a frame as well. You can double the lines in horizontal and
vertical manner. No need to hurry at all whenever you are
drawing using a pencil, always try to keep your hand
very much loose and free. No need to make it stiff in case you want to create your own composition
of the entire house. It is completely fine. I've added these little
horizontal lines in the roof structure to
add some minor details. Then there is going to be
a huge rectangular shape, which is the foundation
of the entire house. And these little
rectangular shapes which are connected to it, forming a beautiful fence
of the entire house. To create some aesthetics and elements in the
entire painting, I'm adding these little
bushes as you can observe. It's a simple random line
that we have created. Then there's going to be a roof connected to the entire house. You can just create these
slant lines together. I'll be adding a little chimney
on the topmost portion. You can observe
that we have almost created a beautiful
house structure. I have also added
a little bit of plantation in the right hand
side of the house as well. In a very random
and natural way. Only you can do that
particular step according to your convenience. Now we are adding these
little vertical lines in the bottom portion to
enhance some details. We are almost done
with the basic sketch. You can add these little bushes of plants in the bottom
portion if you want to. Now, once you're done
with the entire sketch, let us use our marker to apply black line to
the entire sketch. Again, I'm starting from
the topmost portion. It is a very simple
and easy step. You just have to follow
the pencil line. No need to worry at
all in case you add certain additional strokes
rather than the pencil line. It is absolutely fine. In fact, you can
add minor details using your marker directly. Also, no need to hurry at all. And I repeat the same step that try to keep your hand
very much loose and free. Whenever you are
using a pencil or a marker to apply an outline. Basically you can
observe that I'm adding these little vertical
lines to add minute details to the
entire sketch as well. If you observe carefully, you'll be observing
that there are these little black dots forming in the end of the lines or wherever the lines
are intersecting, which looks really nice when
you apply the water colors. Now in the roof, I'm adding these little horizontal lines
to add some minute details. It basically creates
some nice aesthetics. And the entire painting looks a little bit
more in detail. Now let us add the outline to the entire house
element as well. I'm starting with the walls. You can add double lines as
well near the plantation, you just have to randomly
apply the line in this format in case your marker line does not
follow the pencil line. It is absolutely fine. You can add multiple strokes and create an abstract outline. I'm adding these horizontal and vertical lines in
the fence as well. Now, I'll be adding the outline to the window element as well. It's a simple double
line where we are adding these horizontal and
vertical lines together. It basically creates the entire framework of
the entire window. You can observe that I'm adding two vertical lines to complete
the walls of the house. You can add these little
vertical lines to add few more details in the
entire house structure. Then we have these
little details in the bottom portion as well. You can also add these little bushy structure
in the bottom portion. Just randomly apply your
marker in this manner. Now to add some more depth and details to the
entire sketch, I'm using my calligraphy pen, which is basically a
thick black marker. You just have to apply
these solid black patches in a very random
and natural way. You're not going to cover the entire outline using
this thick marker. You just have to apply
it in certain areas. I'm also enhancing the frame
of the entire window slowly. I'll be moving towards
the left hand side. You can carefully observe
that as you apply this thick, solid black line to
the entire sketch, the sketch will
automatically get enhanced. We are also going to add these little solid
black patches in the bush that we have sketched in the left hand
portion as well. Now you can observe a
beautiful contrast of the entire sketch with the solid white background that we have of the watercolor paper. I have also added these
little black patches in the bottom portion and
in the fence element. Even if you're working
with a thick marker, always try to keep your hand
very much loose and free. No need to hurry at all. In case your marker line does
not follow the pencil line, it is absolutely fine. Now let us talk about the watercolors that
we're going to use. The watercolors that
we're going to use for this particular
painting is deep green, light green, cadmium
orange, and black. In case you want to create your own color combination
for the entire sketch, it is absolutely fine. I'm starting by taking
some good amount of saturated cadmium orange. I started from the
topmost portion. You can observe that the color is also going out of the line, and it is absolutely fine. It is a part of urban sketching
and abstract painting. Basically, I'm randomly applying the color in certain areas. One thing that you can keep in mind while using water colors is that whenever you want to have a highly
saturated color, try to have less amount
of water and more color. This will give you a nice
pigmented and saturated color. Wherever you want
a lighter tone, try to have more
water and less color. Now I'll be taking a combination of deep green and light green together and start applying it in the remaining portion
of the entire house. No need to hurry at
all. Take your time. Mix the colors.
Well, try to make a good combination of
color and water together. Use the tip of your round brush
to paint in smaller area. And wherever you want to have
a lighter saturated color, try to use more amount of color. We have almost applied the water color in
the entire house. Now I'll be adding some color to the remaining building
structure as well. You can randomly apply some green patches in
the bottom portion. As you can observe, it's a very random and natural
way of applying color. No need to worry
about painting it in the exact same way I'm
painting right now. You can create your own
combination of colors. You can apply the color
in your own random way. You can observe that. I'm also leaving some white
spaces in between. And it is absolutely fine. It basically makes
the entire painting look a little bit more classic. I took some nice amount
of deep green and light green together and applied it on the
remaining roof, leaving some white
spaces in between. Then in the walls also, I have applied the
same color and I have left the window portion
completely white. There is this nice
bushy element. You can paint that
green as well. You can create
variation in color by just increasing and decreasing the saturation of the color. I'm just taking some good amount of water which is
having a little bit of green in it and I'm just
applying it in the sky area. Basically the remaining portion of the
building structure, you can observe that
the marker also gets a little bit spreaded
when we apply some water. Again, you can take
some good amount of deep green and light
green together. Apply these little patches
in the surrounding. We have the watercolor paper completely wet right
now in the background. You can take some deep green
and light green together. Tap your finger onto
the brush and splatter some color around
the background area. Use your spray bottle and
spray some water around the drops that we have
applied to the background. In case you do not
have a spray bottle, you can directly spread
them using your brush. Try to have some good
amount of water in your brush and just try to
blend the colors together. You'll observe
that the dots will also get spreaded in
the entire background. Now let me tell you one thing. That it is absolutely fine if your abstract background is completely different than mine. In fact, you can experiment and explore according to
your convenience, since the background is
completely wet right now. You can also splatter some
more color and you'll observe that the dots
looks really nice. Now, I'll be taking some
cadmium orange also, and I'm just plattering
that color as well. It creates a nice contrast
with the green color. Now you can observe a
beautiful combination of an abstract background and the entire vintage house
that we have painted. Now, in order to increase the saturation of
the window color, which is having a beautiful
cadmium orange color, try to have less amount
of water and more color. You'll observe a
nice vibrant color and apply it on
the entire window. Use the tip of your
round brush to paint in this smaller portion. No need to worry at
all in case there are certain spaces
left in between. It is absolutely fine. You can also add this
particular color in certain areas which are completely white to enhance the details of the
entire vintage house. Now, in order to
make a good contrast in the frames of the window, I'm taking a little
bit of black and I'm just using the
tip of my rounder, having less water in it. Just apply it to the entire
frame and you'll observe a beautiful contrast of the
frame with the window color. Once we apply the water colors, you'll observe that
the solid black line that we applied using the marker and the
thicker marker will get a little
bit less saturated. I'll be taking my thick marker again and I'll be
reapplying the strokes so that the black color
will get a little bit more enhanced and it will
get resaturated again. Similarly, you can use this thick marker to
add minute details in the bushes and the smaller
rectangular structure that we have added to the
entire vintage house. Simply use the tip
of your marker, no need to keep your
hand very much stiff. Try to keep it very
much loose and free. You can also apply the
marker in the fence as well. Now let us add some text
to the entire painting. I'm writing abstract
urban sketching. You can write any positive or any text line that you like. We are done with the
entire painting. Now let me take you a
little bit closer so that you can observe all
the details carefully. Using three basic steps, we have completed
the entire painting. I hope that you enjoyed creating this
particular painting. This is the last class project. Now let us move
towards the next part.
13. Class Conclusion: Urban sketching is a very
interesting topic in art. Whenever you're
traveling or going to a different location where you find some interesting
building elements, you can observe
them carefully and try to replicate it
in your sketchbook. No need to worry
about perfection. You just have to create
some random natural lines. Try to make a good
combination of pencil lines, sketch pens and
watercolors together, and create some beautiful
abstract paintings. One thing that I always tell my students is never to be
afraid of making mistakes. It is a part of learning. Always try to maintain an art journal in
which you can practice on a regular basis and keep
a record of your artwork. I would be very excited to see all of your class projects. Do add your projects to
the project gallery. Feel free to ask any questions or doubts you have
related to the class. It would be really great if you leave a review for
the class as it encourages me a lot and my class can reach many
more students like you. You are free to explore
and experiment with the class projects at the end. I would like to say keep
learning, keep practicing. Thank you so much for joining my class and happy painting.
