1. Welcome to the Class: Painting a forest landscape is always a very
peaceful process, especially when done
using the medium of watercolors. Hey, everybody. You're most welcome to my
new class, myself, Patel. I'm a self taught, independent artist and an interior
designer by profession. I personally love to explore different art forms and styles and not stick to
one particular thing. So if you are joining
me, you'll find a variety of classes
that I create. You're going to
create a landscape using a minimal color palette. Before starting, I'll show you how to apply masking tape on the paper so that we get a nice border once we are done completing the
entire painting. You're going to talk about
all the art supplies that you will need
for the entire class. No need to worry at
all in case you're missing out on any
particular art supply. You'll find it very easily in
any nearby local art store. The first step is to
create a nice sky, having some abstract clouds, followed by a beautiful mountain and some landscape
in the bottom part. You'll definitely enjoy
the entire process of painting the
pine trees as well. It's an abstract
form of painting, so no need to worry
about perfection. Just enjoy the
process of creating. By the end of the
class, you'll have a beautiful forest
landscape painting using easy painting techniques and
the medium of watercolors. I'm super happy to share
this class with all of you. So without any delay, grab your art supplies and join
me on this creative journey.
2. Art Supplies: Hey, everybody. Now
let us talk about all the art supplies
that you will need for the entire class. No
need to worry at all. In case you are missing out
on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in
any nearby local art store. So the first thing
that you'll need for this particular class is the paper that we
are going to use. So it's a simple sketchbook on which I practice on
a regular basis. It is 170 GSM. In case you want to use a
300 GSM watercolor paper, it is absolutely fine. Now comes the next art supply, which is a simple masking tape. Which we are going
to use to apply on the watercolor paper
before we start painting. So that once we remove
the masking tape, we get this beautiful
white border. Then comes the next art supply, which is the brushes that
we are going to use. You will need only
two basic brushes. The first one is a quill
brush of size four. Another one is a round
brush of size one. So these two brushes will help us to create this
beautiful scenery. Then comes a simple
tissue paper that you will always need whenever you're working with watercolors. It helps us to remove excess
amount of water and color. You can already observe some good amount of color
on the tissue paper. So this is a simple color
palette that I have created. You can use a
simple rough scrape of paper to create the colors. It is basically having major
amount of green in it. Then comes a simple color
palette for mixing colors. Make sure that
your color palette is having enough
space to take out multiple colors and have some nice mixing
space in it as well. The next tart supply is a simple container in which you can observe some
green colored water. Definitely, we are going to take some clear water initially. Whenever we are working with
watercolor as a medium, you'll definitely need
some good amount of water. Then comes the last art supply, which is the colors that
we are going to use. These are four basic watercolors that you will need for
the entire painting. No need to worry about the
brand or the exact shade. You can use any other
good alternative as well. The first one is deep green, then we have black,
sap green and white. The tubes that I'm
using are from bonfll. You can use any other
good alternative as well. So I hope that you got
an exact idea about all the art supplies that you will need for this entire class. You can use any
good alternative in case you do not have
the exact art supply. Now let us move
towards the next part.
3. Tape the Paper: Hey, everybody. So before we start with the forest painting, let us apply the masking tape on all the four
sides of the paper. The reason behind applying the masking tape is that
it will give us a nice, beautiful white border once we are done with the
entire painting. So slowly, we are going to apply the masking tape on
all the four sides. You have to make
sure that you apply the tape in a parallel
manner with the paper edge. So I'm starting from
the right hand side. You can observe the
way I'm carefully aligning the tape
with the paper edge. You can observe
that I have placed the first strip of the masking
tape in a parallel manner, apply some pressure using
your thumb or finger. Similarly, I'll be applying another masking tape
on the left hand side, align it with the paper edge and simply apply some pressure
using your thumb. Now, once we are done applying both the tapes on either sides, let us apply it on the
bottom part as well. You can observe the
way I'm trying to make the tape parallel with
the bottom paper edge. Once I have placed it, I'll apply some pressure
using my finger. Now comes the last tape. We are going to apply it on the topmost part using
the same steps. The most satisfying part is
removing the masking tape, which gives a nice
sense of satisfaction because it gives a perfect
edge to the entire painting. Now I'll apply some
pressure using my finger, so you can observe that
we are done applying the masking tape on all the four sides in a parallel manner. It gives a nice rectangular
shape in the center part. So the paper is ready with the masking tape and let us
start with the painting.
4. Forest Landscape: Everybody. Now let us start
with the forest landscape. I'll be using my quill
brush of size four. In the color palette, I have taken some deep
green and sap green. Take a little bit of solid
black color as well, take some good
amount of water and try to make a nice
composition of the color. Make sure that you have
nice amount of water and less color because we want a less saturated
color in the sky. Start from the topmost portion, apply a nice coat of watercolor
on the entire surface. No need to hurry at
all, take your time. Make sure that there
is no space left in between the masking tape and the color that
you are applying. Now I have taken a little bit more saturated color
in the quill brush, and I'm using the
quill brush tip to apply these little
patches in the sky area. Since the sky is
completely wet right now, the color will
automatically spread. It is basically known as
a wet on wet technique. So it gives a nice cloudy
effect automatically. I have taken a little bit
of more saturated color and no need to
worry about getting the exact same color value. There might be a difference
between your shade and mine, and it is absolutely fine. So I've created a nice patch
of cloud in the sky area. I'll take a little bit of black, not in a high, saturated manner, and I'll use the tip
of my quill brush again and apply it on the
bottom part of the cloud. Since the cloud is wet as well, the color will spread
in a nice manner. It is not at all
compulsory for you to create the cloud in
the exact same way. You can create a variation according to your
convenience as well. Now, let us paint the
mountain in the background. So the sky is completely dry. Let the sky and cloud
dry for a while. Let us create
another combination of the color in
the color palette. Take some sap green, deep green, and black together. Try to have less color and more water and simply start
from the left hand side. We are going to use the
entire surface of the brush. You can absorb the way
I'm holding my brush in a complete horizontal manner and create this beautiful
mountain outline, followed by covering it on the entire surface
in the bottom part. Now I'll take a little bit of solid black color
in my quill brush. And since the mountain is
completely wet right now, we'll just use the tip
of the quill brush, applying some shade on
the left hand side. You can absorb the
way I'm moving my brush in an angle
on the left hand side. So it creates a
beautiful variation and the color will
automatically spread, leaving some light green
patches in the background. No need to hurry at
all, take your time and slowly do this
particular step. Also, no need to worry
about perfection. It's an abstract
form of painting, so you can have a variation
in the entire scenery. Now, let us start
with the landscape part in the bottom area. So I'll clean my quill brush, take some good amount of water, apply it on the horizon line. You can observe
the way I'm moving my quill brush and cover the entire surface
on the bottom part. It might have a less
saturated green color, and it is absolutely fine. Now, we are going to take some solid black color in
the color palette, mix it well with sap green
and deep green together. Now the surface on the
paper is wet right now, and we are going to use the
tip of the quill brush, apply these little patches, start from the left handside, slowly move towards
the right hand side. So you can observe the way
the color is spreading. It is very satisfying and you'll definitely enjoy
the entire process. Watercolors is all about
controlling water and timing. So since the paper
is wet right now, you have to have a
little bit of speed and apply the color so that it spreads in a
very natural manner. So using the tip
of my quill brush, I'm going to create a natural road element
in the center part. So we will leave that
particular space and we'll apply the sabrene
color on the entire surface. No need to hurry at
all, take your time, use the surface of
your quill brush in a nice manner to apply
the color completely. So you can observe that
we get a beautiful road, having a less light
green color in between. You can take some more
solid black color to make some depth in
the entire forest area. Let me repeat once again, no need to worry
about perfection. Also, you can compose the entire scenery according
to your convenience. So it is not at
all compulsory for you to paint in the
exact same way. Now using the same
solid black color, I'll apply these
little color patches on the surface of the landscape, and it will spread
automatically since the entire surface is
completely wet right now. And this is something
that I love about Aton wet technique. You just have to
maintain a little bit of speed so that the
surface do not drise. Now you can already
observe that we have created a nice base of
the entire painting, having these beautiful
elements around. Once we are done
creating these elements, we are going to add minute
details to the entire surface. So I'll just take a little bit of less saturated green color, apply it around the road element that is on the center part. Now, let us add minute details
to the entire scenery. It is the most satisfying part. Take your round
brush of size one. Now take some solid
black color in it. We have these beautiful
solid black patches above the horizon line. You're going to convert it
into beautiful pine trees. It's a simple and easy process. You just have to create
a little vertical line, start adding these
little strokes and slowly move towards
the bottom area, increasing the size of the
strokes that you're making. It is one of my favorite
steps to create the pine trees and no need
to worry about perfection. You can create the
variation in the height and size of the pine tree
according to your convenience. As I move from left hand side towards the right hand side, slowly, I'll decrease the
size of the pine trees. And as I move towards
the right hand side, slowly, I'll increase the
size of the pine trees. So it gives a nice variation
to the entire scenery. It is one of my most favorite
part to paint a pine tree, and in case you're not
confident enough to paint the pine tree directly
towards your final scenery. What you can do is that you can take a rough scrape of paper, try to practice the pine
tree on that initially, and then you can come
towards your final painting. This will help you to develop
confidence while painting, and the chances of making
mistakes will be very less. So you can observe that I'm almost done painting
the pine trees. I'm doing the last one, and I'll add one more
on the right hand side. The entire process is very satisfying and you'll
definitely enjoy it. So now we have given some
beautiful definition about the horizon line, adding these beautiful details. Using the same round
brush of size one, we are going to paint
some minor grass element in the landscape in
the bottom part. So these steps are
absolutely same. Using the tip of
the round brush, we are going to add minute details to the entire landscape. Now, while doing this
particular step, you have to keep your hand
very much loose and free. You'll need a lot of patience, and you have to use the tip of your round brush to add
these little strokes. You have to combine
them together to form this beautiful grassy texture on the entire surface
of the landscape. Now you can apply these little strokes
wherever you want to. You can compose them near
the dense area where we have these solid black patches around the entire landscape. No
need to hurry at all. Take your time and slowly
apply these little patches. Now, in the road element
where we have this light, saturated green color,
you're going to add some patches that gives a nice texture to
the entire road. So my brush is having a very less amount of
water and color in it. So I'm applying this rough
texture on the entire surface. In case you find that
your brush is having axis amount of color
or water in it, just simply dab it onto the tissue paper to apply
this beautiful texture. And that is why it
is important to keep a tissue paper nearby whenever you're working
with watercolors. It helps us to remove axis amount of water and
color from the brush. You can observe the texture is giving a nice detail
to the entire road, and it makes the entire scenery
look even more beautiful. I'll take some good amount of solid black colour from
the color palette again, and I'll add the grassy
texture wherever needed. Oh. So now, once we are done adding the grass element to
the entire landscape, it's time to add
another mano detail, which is a fence element. So you just have to take
some solid black color from the color palette and start creating these
vertical lines, attaching it with
the road element. Try to have variation
in the height and size. It is absolutely fine. Now, once we are done
creating the vertical line, attach it with a thin
horizontal line. And we are done creating a
beautiful fence element. Similarly, we are
going to do this on the other side of
the road as well. Again, I'll take some solid black color from
the color palette, add these little vertical lines, connect it with the road. And once you are done
adding the vertical lines, simply connect it using
a thin horizontal line. No need to hurry at all, do
it with a lot of patience, and you can observe
how beautiful the entire road is looking. So we are done adding this
particular minute detail as well to the entire painting. Now, in case you want to add few more vertical lines
around the landscape, to make it look a
little bit more attractive, you can do that. You're free to compose the entire scenery according
to your convenience. Now comes the next element, which is adding the beautiful
lines to the mountain. So in your round
brush of size one, simply take some sap green, mix it with a little
bit of black, and try to have more amount
of water and less color. Simply dab the brush
onto the tissue paper to make it a little
bit dry and start creating these
little thin lines to enhance the elements in
the entire mountain. You can observe the way
I'm moving my brush, applying very less
pressure and using the tip of my round brush
to get a nice thin line. No need to hurry
at all. Try to do this particular step in a
very slow and steady manner. And you'll definitely
enjoy adding these minute details
to the entire scenery. You can observe
how beautifully we have combined all the
elements together using the medium of watercolors to create a nice
forest landscape. It is very much in
an abstract manner, no need to worry
about perfection. Now comes another minute element which you'll definitely
enjoy creating. Little birds in the sky area. You just have to use the tip of your round brush and try to create a little V
shape in the sky area. You can create a cluster
of birds together. And you can decide the position according to your convenience. So we are done with the
entire forest landscape. I hope that you enjoyed
the entire process. Now comes the last step, which is removing
the masking tape. You have to be very careful while removing the masking tape. Try to remove it in an angle so that you do not end up
tearing your paper. This is a very
satisfying process. You can observe how beautiful
the paper edge looks. Now let me take you a
little bit closer so that you can observe all
the details carefully. Combining these beautiful
elements together, we have completed this beautiful forest landscape painting. I hope that you enjoyed
the entire process, got to learn something new. I'll be super excited
to see all of your class projects into
the project gallery. Feel free to ask any questions or doubts related to the class. I'll be very happy
to answer them all. You are free to explore
and experiment, so no need to worry
about the output. Now let us move towards
the class conclusion.
5. Class Conclusion: Hey, everybody. You're most welcome to the class conclusion. I hope that you enjoyed the entire class and got to learn something
new and creative. While I was creating
this particular class, I made a lot of mistakes, and that is something
that I always tell my students never to be
afraid of making mistakes. It's part of the
learning process. It would be really great if you add your projects into
the project gallery. I would be really excited to see all of your class projects. It would be really great if you leave a review
for the entire class, as it encourages me a lot and my class can reach many
more students like you. At the end, I would like to say, keep learning, keep practicing. Thank you so much for
joining the class, and no need to worry
about the output. Just enjoy the
process of creating.
