1. Welcome to the Class: Painting a landscape using the medium of watercolors is very peaceful, especially when done using easy painting techniques. Hey, everybody. You're most welcome to my new class, myself, Rudick Patel. I'm a self taught, independent artist and an interior designer by profession. I personally love to explore different art forms and styles and not stick to one particular thing. So if you are joining me, you'll find a variety of classes that I create. You're going to start by understanding all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. In case you're missing out on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store. You're going to learn how you can apply masking tape before we start with the painting. The first step is to create a basic sketch followed by creating a nice dramatic sky. Once we are done painting the sky area, we are going to paint the landscape in an abstract manner. The entire process of painting the landscape is very satisfying. We're going to combine different elements to form a beautiful village landscape using different and easy watercolor techniques. It's a short class and it will not take a lot of your time. By the end of the class, you'll have a beautiful village landscape. The class will help you to explore watercolors and develop your painting skills. So without any delay, grab your art supplies and join me on this creative journey. 2. Art Supplies: Hey, everybody. Now let us understand all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. No need to worry at all. In case you are missing out on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store, or you can go for any other good alternative as well. The first art supply is a simple container in which you can already observe some colored water. Definitely, we are going to take some clear water. So water is important whenever we are working with watercolors. Then comes the next art supply. It is a simple tissue paper on which you can already observe some color. It is good to keep our tissue paper nearby whenever we are working with watercolors to dab the brushes to remove excess amount of water or color. Then comes the next art supply. It is a simple masking tape that you can observe. We're going to use this masking tape to apply on the sides of the paper so that once we are done painting and we remove the masking tape, we get a beautiful border. It's a simple color palette that I have created so that we get an exact idea about the colors that we are going to use. Then comes the next art supply. It is a simple color palette in which you can already observe some colors. Make sure that you use a nice color palette which is having enough space for taking out multiple colors and some mixing space as well. So it's a simple color palette that I'm going to use. Then comes the next art supply, which is a simple mechanical pencil. You can use a simple pencil as well. It is absolutely fine. You're going to use a pencil to create a basic sketch before we start painting. Then comes the next and the most important art supply, which is the brushes that we are going to use. So there are two basic brushes that you will need. One is a quill brush of size four, another one is a round brush of size zero. And this is the best part about the class that you will need only two basic brushes. Now let us talk about the next art supply, which is the paper that we are going to use. You can observe that I'm having this basic sketchbook right over here. It's a little bit smaller than A four size. You can use any good alternative. You can select any size of your convenience. The pages are 170 GSM in case you want to use a 300 GSM watercolor paper. It is absolutely fine. You can observe the class project over here. So the GSM is basically the thickness of the paper so that you can apply heavy washes of watercolor on the paper. You can use the paper according to your convenience. Now let us talk about another important art supply, which is the colors that we are going to use. So there are going to be basically seven colors. The first one is white. Then we have blue, black, ochre yellow, yellow, sap green and red. These are the seven basic colors that you will need for the entire painting. So we are done with all the art supplies. I hope that you got an exact idea about all the art supplies that you will need for this particular class. No need to worry at all. You can use any other good alternative as well in case you are missing out on any particular art supply. Now let us move towards the next part. 3. Tape the Paper: Hey, everybody, so now let us tape the paper. Before starting with the painting, we are going to apply the masking tape on all the four sides of the paper. So the reason behind applying this masking tape on all the sides is that once we are done painting and we remove the masking tape, it will give us a beautiful white border on the entire paper. It is a very satisfying process of removing the masking tape once we are done painting. So now let us start applying the masking tape. I'll take one single piece of the paper and apply it on the right hand side. No need to hurry at all. While applying the masking tape, you have to be a little bit careful. Try to align the masking tape with the paper edge, make sure that the masking tape is parallel. And once you are done, just simply paste it and apply some pressure using your thumb. Now, similarly, I'll take another piece of the masking tape and apply it on the left hand side. Again, be a little bit careful, align the masking tape with the paper edge. Make sure that it is parallel and apply some pressure using your finger. So we have applied the masking tape vertically on both these sides. Now we will apply it on the topmost part and bottom part. So again, I'll take another strip of the masking tape and simply apply it on the topmost part in a parallel manner. Make sure that the masking tape is applied in a good manner because you do not want your edge to be distorted. We can make it correct later also, but we can make sure that we apply the masking tape in a good manner. I'll apply the last strip on the bottom part and apply some pressure using my finger. So we are done applying the masking tape on all the four sides. I hope that you got an exact idea about applying the masking tape. We're ready with the paper. Now let us start with the painting. 4. Village Landscape: Hey, everybody. Now let's start with the village landscape. I'm ready with my paper, and let us start with the basic sketch first. I'm using a simple pencil to create a horizon line. It's a simple horizontal line which separates the sky area and the ground area. Now let us start with the first house. We are going to create a simple roof that you can observe. It's basically a simple trapezium. No need to hurry at all. Try to draw the sketch in a slow and steady manner. No need to apply a lot of pressure on your pencil. Just make sure that it is visible to you. Then I have created two vertical lines on either sides, a simple door and window in a rectangular format. It is not at all compulsory for you to draw the sketch in the exact same way in case you want to change the composition or the structure of the house, it is absolutely fine. Now, similarly, I'll just add another little house attached with the first one, and we are going to add another house a little bit shifted towards the right inside. This time, I'm using a different angle for the house, so it's having a simple rectangular roof, followed by two vertical lines to complete the walls, a simple door, and some windows. Now in order to get the exact position of two trees that we are going to paint, I'm just creating two vertical lines, having variation in the height, about the first house. And I'll add few more vertical lines, which is going to be the electricity poles. You can again decide the position of the poles according to your convenience. So it is not at all compulsory for you to draw the scenery in the exact same way. You are free to compose the entire scenery according to your convenience. You can just observe the techniques and it is very easy to complete. So you can observe that we are almost done creating the basic sketch. Now let us paint a beautiful sky in a dramatic manner. So I've taken my quill brush of size four, apply a nice coat of water on the entire sky area. Make sure that you do not move your brush inside the houses and try to apply an even coat of water. You can use the tip of your quill brush in smaller areas where you want to apply water. Now I'll take some blue colour in the color palette and apply some good amount of water. Try to have a composition in which you have less amount of color and more water. Now this is basically known as a wet on wet technique. Since the paper surface is wet completely, and you'll apply your brush on that, the color will spread automatically in a random manner. So you get a nice abstract sky. Now you can increase the saturation of the color by having more color and a little bit less water and simply reapply these strokes. There is no specific way of painting it. You can randomly apply these strokes, leaving some space in between. You can observe a beautiful variation of white and blue together. It's an abstract form of painting, so no need to worry about painting it in the exact same way. Your sky and my sky can be completely different and it is absolutely fine. What is important is that you've got the technique, how to create this beautiful abstract sky. And this is basically known as a wet on wet technique. Now, the surface near the horizon line is wet right now, so you have to be a little bit quick and you can reapply a little bit of water in that particular area. No need to hurry at all. Make sure that you do not move a lot of water inside the house. You can use the tip of your quill brush to paint in smaller areas. I'll take a little bit of sap green in the color palette. You can add a little bit of black in it to make it a little bit more dense and in depth. Now, use the tip of your quill brush and apply these little patches. Since we applied a little bit of water near the horizon line, the color will automatically spread. So this basically helps us to paint these little bushes of green color around the house. You can keep a nice variation by taking a little bit of solid black color, mixing it with sap green, and you'll observe a beautiful spread of the colors. Again, no need to worry about painting it in the exact same way. There might be variation, and it is absolutely fine. So this is how we have added a little bit of greenery just above the horizon line. Now taking some more sap green and a little bit of black together, I'm going to start applying these little color patches around the vertical lines that we created above the house. So there are going to be two trees. You can observe, it's a very simple and easy technique. You just have to start applying these strokes. As you move towards the bottom area, you can increase the size of the strokes that you're making. And the trees are in an abstract manner, so no need to worry about perfection or painting it in the exact same way. Now in the bottom part of the bushes, I'm taking a little bit of solid black color, mixed it with a little bit of sap green to add some shadow in the bottom area of the bushes. You can apply it near the roof of the house as well. It will create a nice contrast with the roof structure as well. Now in order to create some depth near the horizon line, now let us paint the landscape in the bottom area. So I'll take some yellow color from the color palette and simply take some more water in it and apply it on the entire surface of the ground area. Make sure that there is no space left in between the masking tape and the paper. Now mix a little bit of ochre yellow and yellow together to get a nice depth. Start applying these little strokes below the horizon line, using the tip of your quill brush. Now we'll apply these random patches around. Since the surface is wet right now, the color will spread a little bit. And this is again, the wet on wet technique. You can observe the way we have created this beautiful variation above the solid yellow color. Now to create some more depth, you can add a little bit of black and you'll observe we get a darker tone of ochre yellow. There is no specific way of applying these strokes in the ground area. You can create your own composition and apply these strokes according to your convenience. Now when the surface is a little bit dry, we are going to take our round brush of size zero. I'll take a little bit of solid black color, mix it with ochre yellow. Now this time, try to have a little bit of less amount of water and more color to get these beautiful, highly saturated strokes that we are going to use to create the grass. It's a very simple and easy technique, and it is very satisfying as well. You'll need a little bit of patience while you are painting these little strokes. You just have to combine these little vertical strokes in different direction, combining together to form a nice bush of grass. You can observe the way I'm using my brush. Try to keep your hand very much loose and free, no need to make it stiff. Now slowly, I'll apply these little strokes near the horizon line as well. You have to simply observe these steps and follow them. It's a very simple process. You just have to create these little vertical lines and no need to paint in the exact same way or worry about painting it in the exact same way. You're free to explore and experiment. You can compose these strokes according to your convenience as well. So now you can observe that we have applied these beautiful grassy texture on the entire ground area surface. I'll take some solid red color in the color palette. Try to have less amount of water and more color so that you get a highly saturated color patch. Using the round brush of size zero, we are going to paint the entire roof of the house. No need to hurry at all. Take your time, try to paint in a very slow and steady manner. Be a little bit careful near the outline. Use the tip of your round brush to paint in smaller areas. You can observe how beautiful the red color creates a nice contrast with the background. Similarly, I'll add the roof of the smaller house attached with the big one. And the house that is on the right hand side as well. In case you find that your color is getting finished from the brush, feel free to take some more color from the color palette in case you find that you have excess amount of water in your brush, just simply dab it onto the tissue paper. So it is very important to keep a tissue paper nearby whenever you're working with watercolors. It will help you to dab your brush to remove axis amount of water from the brush or color. So now you can observe that I have painted the roof of the house on the right hand side as well. Now let us add the details. So I'll add a little bit of white colour in red and create some variation in the shade. Now I'll apply this particular shade on the topmost part to make it a little bit lighter, and I'll then take a little bit of water in my brush, dab it onto the tissue paper, and blend both the colors. You can observe how beautiful the roof is looking right now. It creates a nice contrast and some shadow effect as well. Now, similarly, we'll repeat the steps in the remaining roof as well. Now let us add few more details in the entire scenery. I've taken a little bit of solid black color in my color palette, try to have less amount of water and more color and create a nice composition of the color. Now there are going to be some electrical poles that we are going to add to the entire scenery to create a beautiful scene of the village. You can create these little vertical and horizontal lines combining together to form the electrical pole. It's a simple step. I have created two little horizontal lines on the topmost part, followed by one single vertical line. Now there is going to be a few more electrical poles that we are going to paint. It is absolutely fine. You can compose the electrical poles according to your convenience, so you can decide the position and height of the poles. So this basically adds a few more details to the entire scenery, and it makes the scenery look a little bit more aesthetic. Now, once we are done painting the electrical poles, what we are going to do is that we are going to connect some wires around. But before that, we are going to add these little strokes inside the trees that we have painted, which are basically the branches, so it gets a little bit more in detail and looks a little bit more attractive. That's a simple step. You just have to create these little strokes inside the bushes. You can add little strokes getting out of the bush as well. And again, I'll tell you the same thing. No need to worry about painting it in the exact same way. There might be difference between your painting and mine, and it is absolutely fine. The entire look of your painting changes once you start applying the details, and applying details is one of my favorite parts. I'll use the same black color to enhance the side walls and paint the windows and doors. You can observe, I have added a little rectangular shape for the windows, and similarly using some horizontal and vertical lines, I have painted the door as well. Now, again, you can compose the windows according to your convenience. Once you apply the outline to the house, it gets a little bit more in contrast and looks a little bit more attractive. Similarly, we'll add a single horizontal line just below the roof to create some shadow effect and make it look a little bit more aesthetic. B now let us add the wires connecting the electrical poles, which will make the entire scenery look even more attractive. You just have to apply less pressure on your round brush, try to have a little bit of solid black color in it, having very less amount of water and simply connect these wires together. The wires are coming out of the landscape area and connecting it with the electrical pole. You just have to create it in this curved manner using the tip of your round brush. To get a very thin line, try to apply very less pressure on your brush. Try to keep your hand very much loose and free while you are painting these electrical lines. And now you can observe how beautiful the entire scenery is looking. Again, no need to worry about painting it in the exact same way. You can paint it according to your convenience. In case you want to decrease the amount of electrical poles, it is absolutely fine. And in case you do not want to add them, it is also absolutely fine. Now I will just make the horizon line look a little bit more in depth and having a separation between the ground area and the skyline. You just have to take some solid black color, create these little patches just above the horizon line so that we get a nice difference between the ground area and the sky area. So I've started from the left hand side, slowly moving towards the right hand side. Now you can observe a beautiful contrast between the ground area and the sky area. Black color always helps to give a beautiful depth to the entire scenery when used in a right amount. Now, in order to make the door look a little bit more attractive, I've taken some solid red color from the color palette and apply it on the entire surface of the door. This is how we make it look a little bit more in contrast with the wall color. Similarly, you can apply it on the door of the smaller house as well. Now comes another very interesting part to paint. So using the same solid black color in a very highly saturated manner and having very less amount of water, you're going to paint little birds in the sky area. It is a very simple and easy process. You just have to create these little strokes in a V shape and simply create a nice cluster of birds in the sky area. You're free to decide the position of the birds according to your convenience and create a cluster of four to five birds together. No need to hurry at all, try to paint in a very slow and steady manner. I'll just create a little bit of depth below the doors of the house using the same solid black color. I'll mix a little bit of aka yellow and yellow together, add a little bit of black color in it, and we are going to enhance the ground area. So it's a very simple and easy step. You just have to mix some cha yellow and yellow together. In case you want to add a little bit of black, you can do that. Try to have a little bit of water in your brush and simply create this texture in the ground area. You can observe the way I'm randomly applying the brush. I'm using the surface of my round brush. We are not going to apply it on the entire surface of the ground area just randomly in certain areas, and it is not at all compulsory for you to paint it in the exact same way. You are free to explore and experiment. In fact, you can create the entire scenery according to your convenience. The texture basically helps us to make the ground area look a little bit more attractive. This is the first layer of the entire ground area. We are going to apply another layer using sap green, and it will enhance the entire landscape and make it look even more attractive and beautiful. I'm applying the texture a little bit on the right hand side as well in the bottom corner. Now we are going to enhance the landscape even more. So I'll use my quill brush, apply a thin coat of water on the entire surface of the landscape. Now we are going to mix some sap green and black together, and we are going to reapply the entire color. No need to worry at all. I will look really nice once it dries. So I've taken a little bit of sap green and just try to apply it in a random manner by creating these strokes. You can leave a little bit of space in between to keep the yellow color that we applied initially. Now I will simply increase the saturation of the sap green color. Mix it with water, try to create a nice composition of water and color together, and try to have less amount of water. Now, simply, I'll just create these strokes around. The highly saturated strokes are on the edges, and as I move towards the inner area, I just create these horizontal strokes. You can observe how beautiful it gets as we create the variation between the landscape that we applied initially and the strokes that we are applying right now. No need to worry at all. I will look really nice when it dries, and we are going to even create the grassy texture again. Now using my round brush of size one, we are going to reapply the grassy texture using some solid black colour. Now, this time, these strokes will look even more beautiful, create a nice contrast with the background. These steps are absolutely same. You just have to use the tip of your round brush to create these little vertical strokes combining together to form a nice grassy texture. So now you can observe that we are almost done adding a beautiful grassy texture in the entire landscape. You can apply as many Atrokes as you want to. The more grassy texture you'll apply, the better the landscape will look. It is a very satisfying process, and you'll definitely enjoy adding minute details to the entire landscape. Just try to keep a little bit of patience and try to paint in a very slow and steady manner. No need to hurry. Make sure that whenever you're painting these little elements, always try to keep your hand very much loose and free. No need to make it stiff. So we are done with the entire scenery, let us remove the masking tape. It is a very satisfying process and you'll definitely enjoy it. Try to remove the masking tape in an angle so that you do not end up tearing your paper. Slowly, I'll be removing the bottom tape as well. You can observe how beautiful the edge looks once we remove the entire masking tape. Now we are left with two tapes. I'll remove the right hand side one first. And then comes the last one. Now you can observe how beautiful the entire white border looks once we remove the masking tape, and that is the reason of applying the masking tape. Now let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe the entire scenery carefully. Combining these little elements together using the medium of watercolors, we have created a beautiful village landscape. I hope that you enjoyed the entire process of painting this beautiful landscape. I'll be super excited to see all of your class projects. No need to worry about the output, enjoy the process of creating. You're free to explore and experiment with the entire scenery as well. Now let us move towards the class conclusion. 5. Class Conclusion: Hey, everybody. You're most welcome to the class conclusion. I hope that you enjoyed the entire class and got to learn something new and creative. While I was creating this particular class, I made a lot of mistakes, and that is something that I always tell my students never to be afraid of making mistakes. It's part of the learning process. It would be really great if you add your projects into the project gallery. I would be really excited to see all of your class projects. It would be really great if you leave a review for the entire class, as it encourages me a lot and my class can reach many more students like you. At the end, I would like to say, keep learning, keep practicing. Thank you so much for joining the class and no need to worry about the output. Just enjoy the process of creating.
