1. Welcome to the Class: Have you ever tried sketching and painting on a brown paper? If not, let us create a beautiful landscape on a brown paper using the medium of watercolors. We're going to use easy sketching and painting techniques that will elevate your drawing and painting skills. Hey, everybody. Myself, Ruwick Patel. I'm a self taught independent artist and an interior designer by profession. I personally love to explore different art forms and styles and not stick to one particular thing. So if you are joining me, you'll find a variety of classes that I create. Before we start, I'll be giving you the details about the class project that we are going to create. We are going to talk about all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. I'll be giving you the details about the ink, the brushes, and the brown paper that we are going to use. In case you want to take up the project on a white watercolor paper, it is completely fine. So we are going to start by creating a basic sketch using a black ink, and you'll definitely enjoy the entire process of sketching. Using a black ink and a calligraphy pen, we are going to add minute details and depth to the entire sketch. Once we are done creating a basic sketch on a brown paper, we're going to add watercolors to enhance the entire sketch. So you're going to start by applying a beautiful background in the sky area using a blue color. Then we are going to use solid white color to enhance the entire house structure. You'll observe a beautiful contrast of the house with the background, and adding minor details will definitely enhance your painting skills. By the end of the class, you'll have a beautiful watercolor landscape in which the major element is a beautiful house, and it is having a nice abstract effect all over. And you're also free to explore and experiment with the entire scenery. No need to worry about the output, enjoy the process of creating. The class is absolutely suited for beginners and also intermediate and advanced level artists can try it. So without any delay, grab your art supplies and join me on this creative journey. 2. Details About the Class Project: Hey, everyone. Now let us talk about the class project that we are going to create. I'll be giving you the details about the class project that we are going to create in the entire class. So you can observe the entire watercolor landscape that I have created using two basic steps, which is sketching and painting. Now, there is a simple color palette that I have added on the topmost portion to make the entire painting look a little bit attractive. There is a beautiful blue background in an abstract manner that you can observe. There is this entire house structure which is having these little details in it that I have done using a black ink and a calligraphy marker. The beauty of the entire house is through these little details like these fence element that you can observe. These beautiful plants that we have sketched in the bottom portion. You can observe these little windows that we have created, little doors and little windows that enhance the entire house element. Now, if you might think that this is a very difficult sketch to create, it is absolutely not. You'll definitely enjoy the entire process, and it is an abstract form of sketching, so no need to worry about perfection or getting exact perfect strokes in the entire sketch. You can observe the lines are completely going rough and natural, and you'll definitely enjoy the entire process. Now once we'll be done with the entire sketch, we'll add this beautiful blue and white color to the entire sketch, which will enhance it even more. And the brown background is already there. Now, in case you want to take up the entire class project on a white watercolor paper, it is absolutely fine. You're free to explore and experiment. So this is the entire class project. I hope that you got an exact idea. Now let us understand all the art supplies that you will need. 3. Art Supplies: Hey, everybody. Now, let us talk about all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. So I've placed all my art supplies in a systematic manner. I'll be giving you the details one by one. No need to worry at all. In case you are missing out on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store, or you can go for any other good alternative, as well. So the first art supply is a simple water container, which is a glass container, basically, in which you can observe some blue water currently, but we are going to use some clear water, of course. So the water will help to clean your brushes and use it wherever required. Then the next art supply is a simple tissue paper on which you can observe some blue color. It is good to always keep a tissue paper nearby whenever you're working with watercolors. It will help you to remove excess amount of water and color from your brush. Then for the entire class project, you'll need two basic watercolors, which is blue and white. And probably this is the best part of the class that you will need only two basic colors. No need to worry about the shade. You can go for any good alternative. Now let us talk about the most important art supply, which is the brushes that we are going to use. So here I'm showing you two quill brushes. One is of size two, another one is of size four. You can use any of the two brushes. Then the next brush is a simple round brush of size four. We are going to use this particular brush to apply solid white color in the entire building structure. So these are the three basic brushes that you will need for the entire class. Now, let us talk about the ink that we are going to use to draw a basic sketch. So the first one is a simple calligraphy pen that you can observe. It will have a nice thick black tip, which we can use to draw a thick, solid black line. Then another black ink that we are going to use is a thin tip black ink, which is from art line, and you can observe it is having 0.8 tip so it's a very helpful black ink that you can use, and you can also use any good alternative as well. It is absolutely fine. Now, let us talk about the brown paper that we are going to use. So I'm going to use brown paper from Scholar. It is having 170 GSM, and the size is a five. Now in case you do not have a brown paper, you can still take the entire class project on a white paper. Let me show you the class project first. So here is the class project that we have completed on a brown paper. Now, in case you do not have a brown paper, you can still take the entire class project on a white watercolor paper as well. I'll be giving you the detail about the white watercolor paper also. Now the next art supply is a simple transparent color palette that you can observe. You can use any simple color palette, make sure that it is having enough space for taking out colors and mixing them. And you can already see the mixture of my colors in myColor palette. Now, let me give you the details about a white watercolor paper as well. Now, in case you do not want to take the project on a brown paper, you can simply use a white watercolor paper as well. So here is a white watercolor paper from Canson. It is 300 GSM, and the size is same A five. You can use any good alternative. So it is absolutely fine if you do not have a brown paper. So I hope that you got an exact idea about all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. In case you're missing out on any particular art supply, you can go for any other good alternative, as well. Now let us move towards the next part. 4. Basic Sketch: Hey, everybody. Now, let us start with the first step, which is creating a basic sketch. So I'm ready with my brown color sketchbook, and you can observe a beautiful brown background in the entire paper surface. I gave you the detail about a white watercolor paper as well. So in case you want to take up the project on a white paper, it is absolutely fine. I'll be using my black ink from art line. It is having a tip of 0.8. Let me show you the tip as well. So you can observe a beautiful, solid black tip of the entire pen, and we are going to use this to create a basic sketch initially. And wherever we want a thick tip, we are going to use a calligraphy pen. So I'm going to start with the triangular roof of the entire house. You can observe that we are starting from the right hand side. So I've just created two slant lines connecting at one point. Now, we are going to double that up so you can observe these steps carefully. Now, once we have doubled the line to make it look a little bit more attractive and in detail, you're going to add these little vertical lines, start from the left hand portion, slowly move towards the right hand side. No need to hurry at all, try to draw in a very slow and steady manner. And no need to worry about perfection. It's an abstract form of sketching, so it is absolutely fine if your lines are getting out of the border. Now, I'll be adding two vertical lines just below the roof structure, and let us add a horizontal line in between to separate the entire structure. Now, similarly, we'll be adding little vertical lines inside this particular area as well. So again, start from left hand side, slowly move towards the right hand portion. Again, no need to hurry at all, and you'll definitely enjoy this entire step. Adding details will be very satisfying and you'll definitely love to do this. I'll be adding a little window, or you can also consider it as a door by adding a nice rectangular shape just about the horizontal lines that we have drawn. Now, let us add a nice fence element on the right hand side. It is a combination of horizontal and vertical lines together, as you can observe carefully. So you can observe that I have created a little fence on the topmost portion, followed by some horizontal and vertical lines and adding these little details again. Now, one thing you have to remember while sketching is that no need to worry about perfection and drawing it in the exact same way. There might be a little bit of difference between your sketch and mine, and it is absolutely fine. I'll be adding another door element in between the structure, which is having a semicircular shape on the topmost portion. You can double the line to add few minor details in it. Now let us extend the structure on the left hand side. I'm adding another slant roof and I have doubled the line. You can observe the way I'm moving my hand by getting these abstract lines and not worrying about perfection and straight lines. So we have created another structure on the left hand portion, which is going to connect with the entire structure that we have drawn on the right hand side. So it is a huge roof in a rectangular form. Now we are going to add its wall as well, so you can just double the line. No need to hurry at all. Take your time and try to draw in a very slow and steady manner. Whenever you are sketching, try to keep your hand very much loose and free. This will help you to improvise your hand movement and sketching skills. I'll give you a nice technique that you can use whenever you're drawing a basic sketch, which will not only enhance your entire sketch, but it will also make it look more in detail and depth. So whenever you are drawing a basic line sketch, wherever you want to add minute details, or you want to add some depth and shadow effect to your sketch, just apply these little vertical lines in the structure. This will help you to make your sketch look even more in depth and to create some more shadow effect in the entire sketch. So wherever you want to have a nice darker element, you can just add horizontal or vertical or even criss cross lines in between the entire area. So now you can observe that we have created a nice building structure on the left hand side as well. Now let us draw little windows to enhance the details in the entire sketch. So you can observe that I have added semicircular shape on the topmost portion, followed by two vertical and one horizontal line. Then you can repeat the same step and double that lineup. Now to add minute details in the windows, you can experiment and explore, but I'm just adding another rectangular shape in the inner portion, and then I'll just add four rectangular shapes in this solid black patch form. This will create a nice grid form in the entire window. And it will make it look a little bit more in detail. You can add another solid black patch on the left hand side as well. So as I told you that wherever you want to create some shadow and depth effect, just try to add these little vertical lines, horizontal lines or solid black patches. Now I'll add another building structure, which is a little structure on the left hand portion connected with the walls. You just have to create a triangular roof followed by some horizontal and vertical lines together. And in order to make the triangular roof in detail, I'll just add these vertical lines in the entire area. Now you can add a little window in this particular structure as well. Now you can just add a nice frame around by doubling the line. Now, we'll add few more little windows in between the structure, as you can observe. I'm just creating the entire shape and filling it with solid black color. And I'm just adding another line to create the frame structure. It is even more beautiful and a nice experience whenever you observe a live building structure and try to draw that on the spot. You'll definitely enjoy that entire process. Now we want a nice, thick, solid black line. So I'll be using my calligraphy pen, having a thick, solid black tip. And you can observe that I have filled the window and door structure with solid black color. So this particular marker will help you to fill in solid black color in a comfortable manner, and it will also increase the speed. Now, wherever you want to add these solid black lines, you can do accordingly. But I'm just adding it on the bottom portion of the horizontal structure, which basically helps us to create a nice shadow effect. And similarly, you can add this particular horizontal line in all the little structures that we have created, even the Window element as well. So I'll be adding it on the right hand side. It is very important for you to apply the calligraphy pen in certain area only. No need to apply it on the entire outline. It will not make the sketch look even more beautiful. Now, once we are done with the basic sketch element, let us add some plantation in the bottom portion. You can consider it as shrub, as well. So these are little plantations that are going to be on the bottom portion of the entire building structure. So we are starting from the left hand side, slowly moving towards the right hand side. And as you move towards the right hand side, it is going to cover the structure. On the topmost portion as well. So I've created a basic rough line, and this entire process will take a little bit of time. You just have to use the tip of your black ink, and you have to create these little strokes on the topmost portion. Now, once you start creating these little strokes, you have to make sure that in certain areas, you have to add more dots. And as you move towards the bottom area, you can increase the space between the dots that you're making. This is also known as a stippling art technique in which we create any beautiful art form using dot format. Now I'll be using my calligraphy pen to add some solid black patches. The reason behind using a calligraphy pen is that it will help us to save some time to get these little solid black patches in the entire plant area. So we are not going to apply it all over just in certain areas. And no need to worry about adding it in the same way I'm adding right now. You can apply it according to your convenience. In fact, you're free to explore and experiment with the entire plantation. Now, once we are done adding solid black patches, I'll again take my black ink from art line and we'll start stippling again. So I'll just add these little dots, which will complete the entire plantation structure. You can observe these steps carefully. It is absolutely simple and very easy technique. Let me repeat it once again for you so that you can get an exact idea of how you have to add this particular element. So near these solid black patches, you can observe the way I'm adding these little dots where you want to create a nice cluster of dots together, try to have less space in between the dots. And as you move towards the bottom area or the top area, just increase the space in between the dots. This will create a nice depth, and it will give a nice look to your entire plantation. Again, I'll be telling you the same thing. No need to worry about perfection or drawing it in the exact same way. You're free to explore and experiment. It is absolutely fine. Also, there is going to be difference between your sketch and mine, and it is completely okay. H So we are almost done with the entire sketch. Let us add a nice abstract element, which is like a fence on the bottom right corner. I have added two horizontal lines followed by some vertical lines which is going to be connecting with the horizontal lines. And you can add these little rough lines in between, as well. So I hope that you enjoyed the entire process of drawing a basic sketch using a black ink and a calligraphy pen. You can use your calligraphy pen to add some shadow below the triangular roof as well. So we are done with the entire sketch. Now let us move towards the next part, which is applying watercolors. 5. Applying Watercolors: Hey, everybody. Now, once we are done with a basic sketch, let us apply watercolors to the entire sketch and make it look even more beautiful. So the best part about the entire painting is that you will need only two basic watercolors. One is white, another one is blue. No need to worry about the shade. You can use any good alternative as well. You can observe in my color palette, I have taken out both the colors. Now, whenever you're working with watercolors, try to keep a container of water nearby, a simple tissue paper. I'll just flip my sketchbook so that we get a nice comfortable position to paint the sky area. I'll be using my quill brush of size four in case you do not have a quilt brush of size four. You can use a size two quill brush as well. Now dip your brush in water, try to take good amount of water in it. Now simply start from the left hand side, slowly move towards the right hand side area, covering a lot of portion of the paper. Now, once you are moving your brush, make sure that you do not move the tip of your brush inside the sketch. This technique is basically known as a wet on wet technique in which we initially apply a thin coat of water and then color. So I'll just make sure that I do not move my brush inside the sketch area. Now we have applied a lot of water in the entire paper surface. Now let us mix some blue and white together to create a nice light blue shade to apply in the sky area. No need to hurry at all, take your time and mix the color as well. You will enjoy this process a lot, and it is going to be very much satisfying. Now, simply use the tip of your quill brush, apply just about the outline of the entire sketch, and you'll observe that the color will automatically spread in the background. And it will create this beautiful abstract effect. If you find that your color is getting finished from the brush, take some more color from the color palette. And in order to get this effect in a very nice way, make sure that the thin coat of water is not dry when you are applying the color. Now to just make the sky look a little bit more an abstract manner, I have cleaned my quill brush, dipped it in clear water again, and just move it in this circular manner so that the color will get a nice bread. You can apply the water in the entire paper surface as well. So now you can observe a beautiful gradient effect. It is having a nice, dark blue shade near the house structure. Now take a little bit of white and blue together, try to have more amount of white and simply apply it in this dotted manner. You'll get a nice light blue shade. So this basically creates a nice abstract effect in the entire sky area. Now, it is absolutely fine in case you want to experiment with the color scheme. If you do not want to take blue, you can experiment with another color as well. I'll simply just add these little color patches of light blue in between the sky area as well, just to create some abstract effect. The paper is still wet, so the color will automatically get a nice spread. Now, once we are done with the background, I'll be using my round brush of size fok and let us paint the building element. Now, this is going to be very satisfying part, and you'll definitely enjoy the entire painting process. So take some good amount of solid white color from the color palette. Try to have less amount of water and more color so that you get a nice solid white color in the entire paper surface. You can observe a beautiful contrast of white color with the brown background and the black lines that we have created in the basic sketch. So I have just created some vertical lines in the topmost structure, and I have not completely covered it with solid white color in the wall area. Now, you have to use the tip of your round brush, create these vertical and horizontal lines together. You can add a solid white patch in the wall. No need to hurry at all. Use the tip of your brush carefully so that you do not move your brush above the outline. Similarly, I'll be adding it on the horizontal wall structure. So right now you can observe a beautiful solid white color, which is having high saturation because we have used less amount of water and more color. Now we will increase a little bit of water amount in the brush so that the saturation of white color will get a little bit less and we'll apply it in the entire wall structure where we have these little two windows. You can observe that it is having a little bit of less saturation, and the brown color will be a little bit visible. So this basically creates a little bit of depth in the wall, and it also helps to get a nice suppression between the shades of white. Again, whenever you are applying color using a small brush, try to keep your hand very much loose and free. You can observe the movement of my hand as well. Now, I'll take another saturated solid white color having less amount of water in it, and let us add it in the structure, which is in between. I have added it on the slant roof and I'll be adding it on the walls as well. So try to have a little bit of water in your brush and less colour and apply it around the entire structure. Make sure that you do not move your brush inside the windows. And by mistake, in case you move your brush inside the windows, it is absolutely fine. We'll retouch it by using our black ink once the color is dry. Now, we are left with one wall only. So I'm just adding a less saturated white color in that particular area. Just be a little bit careful near the plantation in the bottom area. Try to apply the color in a random way in that particular area. You can observe the way I'm moving my hand to add a nice layer of color in the entire surface. Now, we have a little fence and a little building structure on the right hand side as well. So there I'm using a high saturated white color. In these little portions, we are going to apply it so that the entire color looks in a detailed manner. Now we are almost done adding the color. I'll just add these little vertical lines in a random way to create some abstract effect in the entire sketch. Now there is this beautiful roof element, which is in this rectangular form, having little squares in it. To enhance it even more, we can just simply add these little white dots so that it looks a little bit more in detail and depth. Take a little bit highly saturated white color, try to have less amount of water in it, and just simply apply it in between the squares. No need to cover the entire surface, apply in this random way. So again, I'll be telling you the same thing that no need to worry about perfection. It's an abstract form of sketching and painting, and no need to worry about painting it in the exact same way as well. So we have almost painted the entire building structure. Now, we'll just create some more depth by using a little bit of more saturated white color. I'll just use the tip of my round brush and add it in between the windows so that the black patches will get a little bit more contrast in the entire window. You can apply little strokes horizontal and vertical together to apply it in the entire sketch wherever you want to, it is absolutely fine. You're free to explode and experiment. So no need to worry about adding these strokes in the exact same way. You can add it wherever you want to in the entire building structure. You can add them near the doors and windows to make it look a little bit more attractive and aesthetic. I'm adding it on the entire frame structure. Since we have a less saturated white color in the background, highly saturated white color will be also visible. Now comes one of my very favorite technique. Whenever I'm doing an abstract sketching or painting, I personally use this technique to create a beautiful painting effect. So you just have to take a little bit of solid white color, add a lot of water in it to make it loose and free. Now simply tap your finger onto the brush and just splatter the color around. You'll observe these beautiful dots in a very abstract and random way, and it creates a beautiful effect in the entire painting. In case you want bigger dots, you can use the tip of your brush and increase the size of the dots as well. So we are done with the entire painting part, applying watercolors. Now comes the last step in which we are going to use our black ink, and we are going to reapply it on the black strokes to make the entire sketch look a little bit more in contrast with the white color that we have applied. No need to worry about this particular step. You just have to reapply the strokes wherever you want to, to make your sketch look a little bit more in contrast with the background and white color. So we are done with the entire painting. Let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe all the details carefully. Using some basic sketching and painting techniques, we have created this beautiful watercolor landscape. I hope that you enjoyed the entire process and painting. You can observe all the minute details that we have created. One thing that I want all my students to remember is that no need to worry about perfection or painting it in the exact same way. You're free to explore and experiment with the entire scenery. Now let us move towards the class conclusion. 6. Class Conclusion: Hey, everybody. So you're most welcome to the class conclusion. I hope that you enjoyed the entire class and got to learn something new and creative. While I was creating this particular class, I made any number of mistakes, and that is something that I always tell my students never to be afraid of making mistakes. It is really great if you maintain an art journal to practice on a regular basis. This basically improvises your sketching, inking, and painting skills. I would be really excited to see all of your class projects into the project gallery, so do not forget to add them into the project gallery. It would be really great if you leave a review for the entire class, as it encourages me a lot and my class can reach many more students like you. At the end, I would like to say, keep learning, keep practicing. Thank you so much for joining the class and happy painting.
