A trip to a beautiful part of Amsterdam and its big Artcentre
I live in Amsterdam not far from ‘Tuindorp Oostzaan’ the part in the North of Amsterdam were my husband is born and raised. So I will sketch parts of this part of Amsterdam for these project! Tuindorp Oostzaan was built with the typical architecture of Amsterdam more than a century ago: The Amsterdam school architectuur!
Day 1
My first drawing is the Zonnehuis (House of the Sun) the centre of ‘Tuindorp Oostzaan. All the streets in Tuindorp Oostzaan have names of an astronomical object, that is why these place for all kind of activities was called House of the sun! The House of the sun is a good example for the architecture of ‘The Amsterdam school.
On the square before these building are shops and a coffee shop. We like to sit there in the sun and have a coffee with there delicious fresh baked banana bread!
Day 2 At street corners some houses are joined over the streets.

Small houses for the laborers, but every house with a garden. Very special for Amsterdam in those days! That is why the name of this part of Amsterdam was called a ‘Tuindorp’ what means ‘Garden village’!
But due to the high prices for houses in Amsterdam there are more and more yup’s who live in these small houses!

Day 3 An building for different schools since 1900!

Day 4 Old, wooden building used by the public garden service as canteen and storage.
Day 5 The Bethel church. A small church surrounded with green.

Day 6 Half of a huge hall of the old NDSM shipyard. Many people who lived in Tuindorp Oostzaan found a job at the shipyard but the place was abandoned about 40 years ago.. Now it is a place full of activities. A place were a more than 250 artists work in their workplaces! There is a big gallery with work of these artists (ndsm-fuse.eu), a graphic art workshop, a bakery, a restaurant, a café, small theatre and a lot more! The old shipyard is one of the art centers of Amsterdam nowedays. Every month there is also a huge flee market with 500 tables to buy all kind of things.

Many tourists find their way to the wharf! You are there in 10 minutes with one of the ferries from the city centre.
Have a look inside this hugh art hall yourself and meet the artists: ndsmloods.nl or have a look at the photos of the fleemarket: IJ-Hallen.nl
Visit the old skateyard high in the hall. It is a hugh galerie (free entrance!) with 200 till 800 visitors every day: Ndsm-fuse.nl
Day 7 Crane 13 (1925).
This crane is cultural inheritance and restaurated. It is now a very expensive B&B: Crane Hotel Faralda! For the price of 1200 € you have a 55 m high luxurious room and a magnificent jacuzzi with view all over Amsterdam and the river IJ.
