1. Class introduction : Ever wondered how to make your digital portraits come alive? Well, wonder no more. I'm here to spell the secrets, sharing my favorite tips and techniques to make your portraits burst with personality. Welcome to my skill share class. I'm Amy Emer character artist and illustrator for more than ten years now. In this class, we're diving deep into the world of digital art using Procreate app on your iPad. Get ready to turn those blank screens into portraits that really pop off the page. From sketching to perfect outline to adding i popping colors and textures, we will cover it all, don't worry if you're new to procreate because I'll be guiding you through step by step. Try to make it as easy as I can. Be ready to unleash your inner artist because by the end of this class, you will be creating portraits that will simply make everyone go wow. Grab your iPad, charge up that apple pencil, and let's embark on this magical journey together. Trust me, it's going to be a blast. You can't wait to see in the class. Let's make some portrait magic happen. 2. Class Project : Hey, thank you for joining the class. Before heading to the first listen, let me first talk to you about the class project and what you will need for this class. All what you need is your iPad, Astlus and Procreate app. You can also follow along with me with Photoshop or anything but this class is for procreate. Class project, you can simply create your own sketch or you can head to the project and resources section below the class, download my sketch and follow along to complete this class project. Once you're finished with your drawing, head to the project section below the class, create a new project, upload one or more images, leave any comment you want, and simply upload it to be able to share it with your fellow students, and of course with me. Also, don't hesitate to leave any question or a suggestion below the class in the discussions board, and I'll be more than happy to answer all your questions, and also you can share it with your fellow students to take their opinions too. Now, after you talked about the class project, let's head directly to the first lesson. 3. Sketching : So for the first lesson, I'll be creating the rough sketch. It'll be a fast process because it's not what this class is about. This class is mainly about rendering this sketch into a popping portrait. So you can create any drawing you want in this step or you can simply download my sketch below the class. After finishing this rough sketch concept, I will head to the next lesson to refine the lines to be able to color it. So let's head to the next lesson. 4. Refined Sketch : So after I finish the rough sketch, I will now refine all the lines to be able to work on it later in the coming lessons. As you can see, I take the rough sketch opacity down and create a new layer above that, and I simply try to work with clean lines on top of the sketch. As you can see, I made this process a little bit faster because again, it's not the essence of this class. Simply, you can see that all the lines are getting cleaner and all the details are getting clean and nice and also the dots. Let's now head to the next lesson. 5. Color Blocking : So now that we finish the refined sketch, let's start coloring. All right. So again, I will take the pathetic for this refined sketch layer down, and I'll create a new layer below that, and I'll simply choose this color and choose this brush. And I'll start just going around to draw every single shape here in this face. I made it as a circle. You can edit the shape of this ellipse. You can simply drag the color like that, and now we have the face colored. And now create a new layer below the face and it'll make the neck. Just like that. All right. As you can see here in this style of this drawing. I'm working with straight lines, perfect shapes, like a circle and so on. A right now we have the neck. Let's now create another layer for the hair above the face. Just like this one, and also draw this, and let's edit the shape and drag the color. Now let's create the eyes with the white color. The fun thing about procreate is it's so easy and simple to use for any age for anyone. Everything is so intuitive and you can make it very easily. Now that we have the eyes, let's create this part of the hair below all the layers like this one. Also let's draw this part and connect them together and just drag the color like this one. Also Let's now create this pull over that she's wearing. Just like this and connect the two lines. Would procreate always make sure that the shape you're dragging the color into is closed because if this shape is not closed, when you drag the color, it will simply color everything around on the canvas. All right, I created the new layer for the sleeve or for her arms. Now for this bag strap I created the new layer like this one. And I drag the color as well. Let's now create her hand. All right, and then drag the color. As you can see, I'm creating a layer for each finger. Because later when we are going to render this, and adding the textures, shadows and lights, it will be easier for us to work on each finger on its own. Let's drag this as well. Now for this thumb. You will just start like that and simply drag the color just like this one. Now let's just select by swiping to the right all these layers and create a new group. Let's just call it hand. Let's now create another layer above the hand group for these two bracelets. Feel free to use any colors that you prepare. And that would be so fun. Let's now side to the left and choose duplicate to duplicate this layer. Now let's create another layer and choose clip mask to be for the pupils inside the eye. Let's create perfect circles. To create perfect circles, all you need to do is just draw a circle line and tap with one finger on the screen to' just turn this ellipse into a perfect circle. Now I'm creating a new layer for this glasses and another one, just like this one, just like that, and make this part and the handles of the glasses. Now I'm going to create the ears on another layer and simply drag the color, and now I'm going to make this ring, just like that. It's so fun. Now I'm going to create the other earring, tap with one finger on the screen to make it ellipse as a perfect circle. Now I'm creating her mouth, drag the color. It's a fun process. You're going to like it so much. Now I'm going to choose a darker color than her hair to draw her eyebrows, just like this one. I'm editing this arc. I really like the tools procreate. It's so easy and simple to use. And now I'm making her nose. Let's continue. Let's now create her eye lashes, just like this one. A simple curve and maybe some little eyelashes below her eyes. Now to create this hat. I'm going to create another layer below all the layers that we've just done, and I'll drag this orange color inside of it and another layer to be for that part behind to continue this hat shape. Now I'm going to create another layer on top of that mouth to make that line, let's make that ear ring a little bit bigger. That's it for this step. We're now finished with putting all the local colors for this image. Let's now head to next lesson and see, How we're gonna add all the magic to this portrait to turn it into a popping portrait. 6. Rendering part 1: After adding all the local colors. Now the fun will begin starting this listen. To start shading, I'm going to choose the face first and we'll create another layer, choose clip and mask. And I'll be choosing darker color using this brush. You'll find the brush also in the project and resources section below the class. As you can see, I'm adding some shadows here below the face, just like that, choosing a reddish color or something pink like this one. And I'll keep adding more shadows here below her hay or bang. So just like this one. And as you can see, the more we're adding, the more depth is happening to this flat image. And this is so fun. All right. Now I'm going to add some highlights here with this light yellow color. To the side of the face. Just like this one. All right. And now let's add another reddish color here on top of her eyes on her eye lids and some pinkish magenta color here on her cheeks with a wider brush. Something like that. Small blush. Okay. All right. Maybe lighter color. And another light color with a small brush to make some highlight here below the eyes. Just like this one. Okay. All right. Let's keep going. I hope you're following along with me right now. I can't tell you how excited I am right now to see your projects. So keep going. All right. I now added some shadows below her mouth, as you can see, it made it pop more. And that's fun about adding lights and shadows. It simply takes your flat image and make it like three D, it's not flat anymore. It's not a two D. It's just more popping fun. I'm adding more cast shadows below her eyebrows and her hair bank. Again, below that eyebrow. All right. Let's create another layer clip with clip mask inside the mouth. Let's take that color a little purple to add some highlights here and maybe some lights here on the top of the mouth. Just like that, and maybe some dark colors below. And now that looks so good. All right, let's keep going. Now we're going to work on the eyes. I'm going to choose the alpha lock mode for the eyes layers to be able to draw inside of that layer without drawing outside of that layer. I'm going to choose this light purple color and then we'll get it darker to make some shadows inside the eye like this one. Now I'm drawing inside the peoples. I made it alpha lock as well, just like the eyes. And I'm using the dark color up there. Take it more bluish or black if you want. And now I will try some colors for the highlights like magenta or something. You can just keep trying with any color you want until you feel you've reached the result you have in mind. All right. And now I'll keep adding some shadows here in the eyes. It added some depth, and I really like it. All right. Let's make the eyebrows layer as well to add some highlights on top of that just like this one. And maybe some dark colors below the brows, just like that. All right. I'll be now working on the neck, and I'm going to make it alpha lock as well. Using the reddish dark color of the skin. I'll make some cast shadows below the head and also below her pull over, right. Looks so fun right now. It's not flat anymore. As I told you. The more we're progressing in this rendering step, each layer we touch and each layer, we add lights and shadows to. It simply turns from a flat dull layer into a popping layer, and that all adds to the final image. All right. Let's keep going. As you can see ICA some shadows below her ear ring. And now let's work on the ears with this dark color as well. All right. Let's just use a brush and draw some dark color, and also some highlights with this light yellow color. And some shadows inside as well. Now, let's draw a simple line inside the ears. Just like that with a small brush and a dark color, as we did with the nose and her eye lashes. All right. That looks so cool for the face, neck and ears. Let's now work on these glasses. I made the layer alpha as well, and now I will add some hide lights with a light blue color. Just like that. Let's try this magenta color or maybe a dark purple color below. All right. I'm going to create another layer clipped inside the face to make some shadows below these glasses. As you can see, we made the shadows below the glasses to make it more realistic. This tile is so tending lately and it's used widely in the motion graphic videos and adds. Now I'm adding more shadows to this hair bang inside the layer. Just like that below the hat. It will be a little bit darker. All right. Let's add some highlights here on the tip of this bang. Just like this one. And that's it for this part. We will continue from there in the next lesson. 7. Rendering part 2: Okay. And now let's continue the render techniques that we started in the last lesson. All right. Let's now grab the hair layer and create another layer clip mask into this. Let's choose some dark color just like this to be behind hair. Okay. And now let's choose some highlights, light purple color to be like this and maybe some magenta colors to give this m light. Adding more dark colors here, as you can see the face now popped out of the hair. Now let's head to the poll over and create another layer to be clip mask. Let's choose a dark color with a big brush like this one. I'm choosing dark blue. Just like that. And I'm ending behind the arm as well. That looks so interesting. And a little bit dark color here. Now, let's try some greener colors. Again, with big brush to add some highlights here. Let's add more green, more yellow colors. As you can see, combining colors together add interesting effect. You can try as you want till you get to the best combination you want. All right? Let's head to the arm. Let's make it alpha. And with the same combination of colors, dark blue for the shadows and green, yellow highlights to have the same effect of the pull over just like that. That looks really interesting. If you compared how the face is rendered right now and how her arms are flat, you can see the effect that we've just added so far. These rendering techniques are so handy for you to be for your drawings and everything. Now for the back strap, I also made it alpha lock. Again, I'm making the same process using dark colors for the shadows and highlights with lighter colors. Now for the hat layer, I'm choosing some reddish colors to add some interesting effects here, and for the highlights, I'm using some light colors. Between yellows oranges and red hues, I'm working here to add interesting effects on this hat. Let's keep going. I'll choose now this at part and make it alpha to add some shadows and highlights as well. Just like this one. Let's keep going. Okay. Okay. If you have a question while you're following along right now, just leave your question below the class and it will answer it right away. All right. I'm now adding another layer, clipped mask inside the bag strap and with a lighter color and smaller brush. I'm making some interesting stripes here. Working with this line brush makes fine stripes. All right. I'm now creating some fine lines here to add some interesting effect. And to go along with the style that we are already working with, Okay. All right. Let's now head to the hand and start adding the same effect of highlights and shadows, the same red hues. I make the layer as alpha lock. As you can see, I'm starting to add some interesting effects. Let's get it darker, just like this. I'm adding cast shadow below her sleeve and also below these nice bracelets. And adding some yellowish highlights to the tip of her finger. All right. Let's keep going. As you can see I'm adding some red colors, madding some pinky hues, just like this. Let's keep going, and now next finger, same technique, same process. Let's keep going. Adding shadows, adding highlights. And as I told you, we're seeing some progress here, and the portrait is already popping up the screen. All right Let's continue. Making the same techniques, same shadows. Now the hand is done as well. Let's add some high license shadows here in the bracelets, as you can see, making it also as alpha lock to be able to draw inside. Let's add some nice effects like that, like some shadows below her hand. Now as you can see the bracelets are no more flat. They look rounded, they look cool. Just like that. That looks so interesting already. And now for the earring. Let's also add some highlights and shadows. All right. That looks interesting. Let's take to the magenta color to add some highlights. And for the other one as well. Let's add some highlights and also some dark shadows. And that's it for that part. Let's now head to the last lesson and the last step for this portrait process. I hope you're having fun so far, and let's head to the last lesson to add some cool effects as well to finalize this drawing. 8. Final : Now for the finite part and the most interesting part, let's continue what we started and let's keep going. All right. Let's now create another layer clip mask inside the pull over and let's choose it to be overlay, and let's make some cute little dots as a pattern here, just like that. Just like this one. All right. All right. Let's now head to the arm and create another overlay clipped in mask layer to create same dots. All right. Let's now create some cast shadow below this bag strap on top of her clothes because that will be so realistic and fun and to add another depth to this drawing. All right. That looks cool. All right. Let's keep going. I'm now adding some more shadows here on her clothes, just like that, and also on her arm. Let's now change the color of the background. I feel it looks nice now and it's light purple. It added some contrast. And now let's add shadows. To the right of the drawing and also behind her and lighter color or a white color just like this. Let's continue. Now adding some shadows here on the layer of the hat, below her hand, just like this. Now let's create another layer here below her glasses and let's create an elapse. Maybe with that pinkish color, and let's create another elapse and let's edit it a little bit below the glasses and also drag the same color. Let's now change the blending mode of this layer. You know the lenses of the glasses. Let's just keep going around until you find the nice blending mode. You can turn it into a glasses or sunglasses or anything. I think I like this linear burn, but let's just use the eraser to erase some of this layer. It already added a cool effect, as you can see. I like it so much. All right, let's keep going. Now duplicating it and let's try the hue saturation effect to try changing this color a little bit to add more contrast to the glasses. I really like this one. Let's now get back to the hat layer again and add some more white highlights up there. Just like this one. And that already added some cool effect. And also maybe to this part as well. The more details you're adding to your drawing, the more popping it gets. I didn't like the dots on her pull over. Let's try another thing. Let's first change the blending mode into multiply, and let's change the colors. Maybe some dark blue colors here. Let's take the opacity a little bit down. Let's now change the color for some lighter dots like this one. I really like the effect right now. Let's keep going. As you can see, made lighter colors here. Also for the arm, create another clip mask layer for the new dots to create some highlighted dots here and some dark green dots here. That looks nice already. Let's continue. Let's now create another line here on her arm. Maybe something like this. It's if we're mixing many styles here in this drawing, and that makes it more interesting. Let's now try to create some reddish lines on her hand. I really like how it looks for the bracelet. Let's try some lighter colors and try to make some stripes. To give more effect for how this bracelet is not flat and how it looks like a cylinder. These cool details always add nice effects. And that's set for the drawing. Hope you like the class. I really hope you folwed along with the class, and now you came up with your drawing. I can't wait to see what you came up with you guys, and I'll be waiting for your projects below the class.
