But you just hate drawing. I used to know where to start. Then this class is for you. Welcome to my class only amor, a digital artist and illustrator or a specialized, a character design. You'll learn how to create a stylized illustration about your favorite thing in your daily routine, whether it's yoga, working out, cooking, meditation, or gardening. And you will be able to share this design with the world and use it the way you want. I'll first walk you through Procreate app and all the tools you will need to start drawing graduate, we will create reference board together, work roughly you and your design to refine it all the way through the final sketch. And then we will cover it and add some special touches. Just don't make it all about you. And that's it. Very fun and sample. It's like a guest from yourself to you. You can proudly wear it, print it, and share it everywhere. So grab your iPad and pencil and let's get started. See you in class. 2. About Procreate : Welcome In class, and for the first lesson, we will talk about Procreate app. All what you need to do is just to head to the App Store on your iPads and they'll load this application. It's really fun. Let's get started. All right, so first I'll open Procreate, and the first thing you'll find is this gallery. This gallery has already my existing illustrations here. You'll find thumbnails for my illustrations and this plus icon, you will find the new Canvas menu here that you can choose from any canvas size that you want. You can also hit here to create a gamboge with the specific dimensions here. And you just had created to make this. And you can also choose anything from these attributes to help you customize your Canvas, more override. Then you have this in the top bar. You have some options like the select. Once you select some of the artworks here, you will have those options up here like stack, preview, share and duplicate and delete, and that's it. All right, so let's see how can we stack, like if we selected those two here and a head stack, you will find that the R groups in one stack. So a sac is like a group. And once you just swipe left, you will find those options whether to share, duplicate, or delete. And we knew important to them, get any file from the files you have on your iPad and also a photo from your art gallery on the eye or rides. So I like to work with this 3000 pixels by 3000 pixels. This square canvas is my favorite analyte. Work with it a lot. All right, So let's get to know more about this. Here is, the gallery just takes you back to this artwork place and that's explored these icons. This is the first one. Well, the actions you'll find here is some actions like cut copy. And this other action here is about the canvas. And you can choose the crop and resize the copper II size here you can just crop or resize or reset your canvas to change the dimensions or ride. Here you'll find some other stuff like the drawing guide, the reference, flipping the canvas horizontally or vertically. So let's talk more about the drawing guide and heads the edit drawing guide. What's the drawing guide? It had a lot of options here the very interesting. First we have the to the grad, the isometric and the perspective and symmetry. So once you choose the perspective, you can choose the vanishing points. You can have one vanishing point or two. And then the symmetrical UK can find here some options, like a vertical, symmetrical horizontal, quadrant, or radial. All right, Let's get back here. You'll find some options here, some attributes like the opacity, the thickness of the grids you have on your canvas, and also you have the grid size and as you can find, just makes them bigger or not. And here you can choose the FSA drawing options. And as you can see here in this canvas, is now assisted with the drawing guide. And you can just turn it off from here to there, back to the blank canvas that you have when you hit your friends, you have this small window that you can import an image from here, or you can just work with your face. And we'll open the camera and you can work with this reference. Also, we have the Canvas MPO here that has all the data to your Canvas. All right, Also in the actions we have the sharing that you can share this file as image or as layered file like this. And it's really easy to export anywhere else. Also the videos here you have the time-lapse, Procreate has the time-lapse thing. This really amazing. Once you finish your drawing, you'll open the time-lapse here. And you can also turned off from here and here you can export that. All right, Also we have here in preferences like making your interface light or not. We can, as you can see, if you are a right-handed or left-handed. You can see the those off just came from the right to left. Okay. And here are some health that you can explore yourself. Here for the adjustments you'll find a lot of nice adjustments that we will talk about later. And here for the selection, you'll find a free hand selection. You'll find the rectangular selection, you'll find an ellipse selection and you can remove from your selection. You can copy your base. You can invert your selection. So let's try something here. Adjust the feather of your selection and you can clear your selection. And now with a move and resize tool, you can work free form or a uniform or a distorted like this from any point. Or we have also the rap like that. And it turns the layer into a mesh or the drawing into a mesh that you can just change any of the boys. Just like that. It's very easy and you can use it to create different designs. And here you can just reset. And now we had the layers panel. This is the layer that we are all now. By swiping left, you can clear it. You can change the background color just like that. All right? And this is the layers. We're all now. We can add new layers from here, from this plus icon when you swipe left so you can delete just like that. And the year you can duplicate the layer or you can delete it. Alright, by just pinching two layers together, you turned into one layer. And with just hold it like this and rearrange your layers the m by swiping right on any layer, you can just select as many layers as you want and you can make them as a group arrived. And you'll find here at an option that says delete or group. Unless the R group, you can just open it like this or close it and you can rename it or flattened like this. So it's one layer again, or right, when you have this end, you'll have all the attributes about this layer. You will have the opacity and you'll have the blending modes and everything. All right, so let's just see an example. If we just draw something like this here, you will see this layer. You can change the opacity for it and you can change the blending mode was like this, is you can see it just changes the layer color and everything. It's really fun option and you can just delete the layer. Alright? And now with a brush library, it's a really fun place. And procreate has a lot of libraries here. We have sketching and inking brushes, a lot of drawing brushes. As you can see you, we also have some painting. Brushes, are tested brushes, calligraphy, we have lots of brushes here. We have airbrushing, textures, abstract, charcoals, elements, pray pains, touch of vintage, and a lot more. You can just explore it and play with it. And here are the important. Once you download a, the brush, the brush packs from the Internet, you can just download it and you find it in the important less. That's all about the brush. All right, let's continue. As you can see the brush here, you can resize the brush tip just like that. And you can just change the opacity of the line that you're drawing. And if you just choose this tool, it's the smudging tool. So let's dry here. And you can change the brush that you're smudging with. It's really fun and you will need it a lot to blend the colors if you'd like digital painting. And as you can see here, I can undo or redo with, with two fingers, just tap with two fingers to undo. And with three fingers to redo anything that you've done, or write. Two fingers to undo. And also you can choose a brush for deleting. Yeah, this is the Eraser tool. So we had the brush tool, sponge tool and the eraser tool. And you can choose a brush from the brush library for annual these three options. All right, let's continue. And now with the colors, you can open the colors here and you'll find the desk like that. You can change from it. You have this classic colors or right? You also have the harmony option that you can just play with the values here and choose any color. And as you can see, it's automatically chooses the complimentary color to be harmonious with it. All right, and you can also play you the values to pick a specific thing. And we also have palettes and procreate comes with a lot of standard valets. And you can just choose any of them to set as default, just like that to use. And we can also add new palette from here. You can create one. Once you create a new one, you can find it blank in here. And you can just add any new color just right here. He knows I select the color and added to the new palette, one tab and you're good to go. Just like this. Choose the color and pet any of the blank queries here in your new palette and it's done and as you can find, it's the default now and you still can change that. Another interesting thing is to choose a color palette from your camera. So as you can see, I'm taking with my camera now and it just absorbs the colors and the photos of the year seeing now or you can just import something from a phi of this you're having or from the photos or right? And that's everything about Procreate. You're now ready to start working and don't worry if you're just couldn't follow along with me in this lesson, I will talk about everything in details in the rest of the class. So let's head to the next lesson. 3. Reference : All right, so now for the reference for it, now that we knew a lot about Procreate, Let's now start. So first when I would like to start any drawing, I'd like to use Pinterest. Pinterest as my best friends, I like to go through Pinterest. Third, any keyword that I have in mind about the theme that I'm about to draw. So for today, you are just free to choose any part of your daily routine that you would like to express yourself with and to share it with the world. All right, so let's start surfing on Pinterest and see what we will come up with. Once you open Pinterest, you'll find here are my boards that I've collected before. And hearing this search, you can just had any keyword and you will find a lot of ideas about this. You'll find photos and tips and everything that people has pinned on their desk keyword that you're searching with. It's really interesting and really fun if you've never tried Pinterest before, dusk tried, and I promise it will be your best friends. You can just hit anything like yoga, meditation. And it has a lot of options here and there. And you can just dry it, something like, you know, like a girl working on her laptop. And you will still find that a lot of stuff and a lot of examples. For today, I'd like to draw something about gardening. So I will just hit guerrilla gardening and see what I will have. You just keep surfing until we find something that inspires you and triggers your mind to start drawing. I found this photo and I just loved it. You feel it's so powerful. And also you have to do is to hit save up to the right and hit Create board. And you can name this boards and you can choose to keep it secret so nobody if your friends see it or anything. And once you choose a photo, you will just scroll down and Pinterest will just recommend other photos from that topic. All right, let's continue. This photograph is also great. I also save it to the same board that was just created that which is gardening. This photo as well. As you can see him just collecting some reference photographs to give me the essence of the thing that I'm trying to draw about. And you can do the same all as you need to do is just to serve contrasts with the keywords that best describes the theme that you're about to draw. I like this one. Just inspire you and, and gives you the idea of flood you like to draw today. Just surfing contrast gives you the mood to draw it right away because when you have a blank mind, you do not to draw and you have this art block. Sometimes just keep looking at beautiful flag photographs of people doing stuff and different, just challenge yourself to hit different areas. Joe, something that you've never drawn before and you'll find it great. All right. Normally this step takes sometimes because you just keep surfing. You never know when the perfect photograph will come up. And I think that's it. I've collected some photos that I really liked the best. Jump in the next lesson, SR working, then they're off sketch. So let's jump in. 4. Sketching : All right, so now that we're done with the board and have collected all the reference photographs that I'd like to start with. We will now head to Procreate, to start working. So just let's head to procreate from here and to start working. And so as choose a dark color. All right, select any of the sketching brushes here. I like to work with this one and just I will adjust the size of the brush I like to work with. And that's yes, this is good. And I'll start working. So the theme for today's drawing is gardening. All right, I will just draw roughly. Imagine what are the things that I would like to work on. And as you can see, you can just, at this stage, you don't have to draw anything. You can just make Sticky Man or something just to express your idea and then references will help you along the way. All right, so I imagine the gorilla who is just setting like that. And maybe she has this spot right here between her hands and she is doing something with it. Also may be, I imagine that CI, and she has some pots here and there around her. And maybe some kind of a little box of some little spots inside or some fruits or vegetables inside of it. Just keep imagining this thing and how you'd like your final illustration look like. At this point, you then have to have a complete idea of what you're doing, but just a small thing or a point to start from. All right. They imagined that she's setting like that and maybe she has something like a big like a big container like this or like a bag or something that has been collecting stuff in old. And she has some just like that and some gardening tools all around her. And I think that's right, and that's it. That's how I imagined this illustration that would look like if something cozy and, and I imagine this grand lunches in the zone and doing her favorite thing and she's surrounded with everything related to that hobby that she likes. And that's how alert rough sketch will look like. Just like Googling or something like that. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, shall. All right, and now let's use the reference board this week. Just done an OS application like that and just had this line in the middle of the apps to choose the portion of the screen that we would like to give to Pinterest and to procreate. All right, so here is, let's rename that as our initial sketch and create another and take the particular little bit down, create another one above it. Or right. And as you can see, I like how she's setting like that and I like how she looks as a start for our drawing. And that's 35 rough sketch that we've just done a right. At this point. If you just don't like to draw, we don't know how to start in the drawing thing. Don't worry, you don't have to draw something really complicated and the anatomy is perfect. And all that always need to do is to express yourself the way you want. Ss total the override for you to draw simply. And two, if you want to trace this reference, just do it. It's totally Arieti. Don't have to know exactly how to draw this to start drawing, no, just chart expressing yourself and enjoy the process. So just let your eye catch the movement that you have in front of you and try to mimic that somehow. And if you remember these bots, I will try to make some here. Yeah, with the names written on it. It'll look really nice. And the final illustration, I guess. Okay. And this photograph, I really like this hat. So you just need to copy the hat or trace it or anything. It's totally or riots, you just need to express yourself. Always remember this, me happy and enjoy the process. Keep it simple. Keep it simple guys and enjoy it. And as you can see, I'm just keeping it very simple. I like the idea of The Apprentice He's wearing and to have a t-shirt under that. Also, this photograph gave me the idea of this kind of plant. You don't have to memorize all kinds of plants and how they look like and everything. No, you have Pinterest. It's really can be your best friend and you'll find everything on it. Okay, and if you remember this first photo that we added to our board, I really loved this basket that she has and I think I'm going to try to manage it somehow. I think we're going to try to make something like that. Just very simply. And you can always trace that if you want just to express the idea and to get to the idea that you had in your mind when you first started. The rough sketch or right. And always remember you don't have to stick to the reference board as is null, you can just keep surfing contrast whenever you wanted. And if you remember the tarnish photograph that I found, I just try to draw that. Right. And now I make this watering can here. I've tried to draw something like it. Just like this. Keep it very simple and always remember that you can trace. If you just stopped at any point of your of your sketch. Keep it simple and don't worry. All right. I like the shape of this plans. Let's try to take that. I need more ideas. Okay, I like this. I like the shape of this plans. I think she can have one behind her. Just saying this monstera or monastery. Oh, like the shape of it. Okay. You just keep surfing, contrast till you find something that triggers you all the time. I really like this gardening tool. That's it. Yeah, I think this this looks nice. All right. And let's keep going. Let's keep going. I really liked this boot. These boots are really colorful and lice is just add them. So if you can see it's all about surfing, Pinterest or Google images or anything that can give you ideas. Just keep surfing to find something that triggers you. And you want to add it to your illustration and just added, trace it, copy it, do whatever you want to do. But it's really simple. And now let's get out of Pinterest and start working. And let's start refining this sketch anymore. And let's think about the level, go down and create another layer above that. And now let's choose the smaller line from the calligraphy brush library and a few heads on any brush you can find all these settings for our brush that you can work with. All right, and here I'm going to share with you some tips on Procreate. Alright, so in Procreate we knew just draw a line and you pose it for a second. Procreate assumes that you would like this straight line. And if you just put one large, one finger on the screen like that, you will find that it just moves with incremental like 30 degrees angle or something. Also, when you are drawing a circle like that and you hold it with two fingers to give you a sharp circle or you can just draw an oval. Also the curve, if you just pause for a second and procreate, will just try to make a curve like that. An input of one finger on the screen too, to move that around the screen with the 30 degrees or something or right? So for the face, I just start drawing like this. All right. Just keep it very simple. As I told you before. All right, let's keep going with the hair. This step really makes it easy for you and your color. I mean, you start coloring like in the next lesson in this class. All right. You just follow the rough sketch that you have below that. And of course you're tried to refine it to stay that. And always remember the you can watch a reference for a part that you just can't work on. And you can trace it and you can work your way through. Let's keep going. As you can see here. A real don't worry about the anatomy of this character or anything or any details and the plans I really want to hear to graph the idea of this class which is just express yourself. Think of it like you're doodling in your journal, or you're trying to make a digital journal with your iPad. But think of it like this. You're just trying to express your ideas with small doodles. You don't care about anatomy, lawn care about how it looks and how perfect it is. Just don't care about that. You wanted to look nice. And that's it. I also refinanced like this. And let's keep going. And I will just fast-forward this for you so that you don't get bored with. The class. Made a fast forward for the rest of the design. And you can just remove four, close the layer beneath that and that sense, you're done with the final sketch. So let's hit in the next lesson and start working on the colors. 5. Color Blocking: And now that we've finished our sketch lists now start with the color blocking. All right, to start, let's first hit to the pellets, as we talked before. And you'll find all these ballots from procreates and some plants that I just created before. Head to the plus icon here to create a new palette. Just say this and head to the desk. And you start choosing some colors from the desk or the color wheel that we have here. Once you had any color. So let's say the skin, the girl's skin color, maybe something like that. Hello. And square and the palate down there, you will find that added to the new pallet. And then I had to have the harmony. We'll find the complimentary colors. And as you can see, I'm just trying to get the colors. And once you long tap on any color, you can just remove it from the palette. All right, here is our valid and can just delete any valid or make it a default. All right, Let's take this sketch and make it take the opacity a little bit down and create a new one. And let's take it below. It. Does say this. And just start drawing the face. And as you can see here, once you draw a closed line or a closed circle or right, and you just drag the color of the bar on the job, you'll find that this color just filled the circles is you've done It's very simple. Just make sure that you're drawing on the layer that's below your low opacity sketch layer so that you can see what you're sketching on. And as you can see you you'll continue the same way. All right, Just like this, and make sure that the outline of any part of this illustration is closed just to drag the color inside of it ends. Easy for you to work with Tom, right? And if you remember, if you just tap and hold on any layer and take it up or down, you can rearrange it between the layers. All right, let's keep moving. You can just keep adding and deleting anything that you have that's overlapping or anything. Keep it simple for yourself and keep going. And now for this apron here. Alright. Alright, let's make the hair and I think I have to choose some hair color and some dark colors in my palette as well. Let's choose this brown color for the hair. And it looks like it's straight like this. Let's just make it wavy and make some fun things around. Just say that. And I chose the loop for the hair. I like it. Let's create another layer below that. Red the top part of the head. And we can create another layer for the dark part of the inner hat. All right? You just keep adding colors to your palette along the way whenever you need a color or you need another hint of color in your illustration, just add it to the palette and it'll be easier for you didn't see. All right. I just fast forward for you all what you need to do as I told you before, I create a new layer, trace your illustration and keep color blocking and that's it. It's very simple and easy and you're like It. Just keep tracing. All right, and that's now had to this part. I want to draw this plant without drawing this branch all over again. So I'll just select this part with the free hand selection or rides. And I chose copy and paste from this election. And you can find that this selected part is now in another layer. So I will keep duplicating the layer. And with the move and resize tool, I just change the orientation for it. Just like this. Just keep pretty sizing and rotating it so our plan doesn't look like it's copied and pasted and the two would be boring. Just like this. All right, let's continue. And the same thing for this plant here. I just selected it and copy and paste bag another layer and keep moving. All right, and that's it. That's all for the color blocking lesson. And let's hit in the next lesson to start the direction part and all the font F's all the way to the end of this class. See you in the next lesson. 6. Texture and final touches : So for our last lesson in this class, we will talk about the texturing and adding the final touches to your illustration to take it to the next step. All right, you'll find that everything around us now is just so cluttered. I didn't like the color of the hair, so I just went to the adjustments and chose the Hue Saturation, Bart. And you just keep moving around the colors to choose another one. And again, we'll choose the usage variation and the layer option. And just keep playing here and there. The change, the color and darkness of the hair. Alright. Same print this and this part. You would just go around your design and see what means improving. See what needs to be redrawn to see if anything just feels off or odd in your illustration, just to refine it before finalizing your illustration. Alright, let us keep moving. Let's select this part and move it down there. All right. And let's change the color for this basket or bag. To add more contrast to our illustration. Maybe something like this. Okay, and that's to select it and make it closer to the girl. That adds more worms. Do the illustration that's continued from here. And also for this tiny glands, I will take it like this. As you can see, I'm trying to get everything around her and just closer to her to add to the worms I want and theme. And also for everything that's a field so cluttered or anything around it. All right, So let's continue. All right, I'll take this plant a little bit just like this and change the hue saturation. Fact that the changes scholar event, let's try to change the color of her jumpsuit. Something that adds more to the contrast. Maybe this color really goes well with the oranges plots around her. So now let's change also the color of the t-shirt. Just be flexible, it's done, gets done. Stick to the color palette that, that you chose at first. Always keep changing until you find the thing that really feels you and expresses gills you and expresses who you really are. Okay, let's copy paste this plant as well. And drag it all the way down. Just like this, and change the color for it. Maybe here. All right. And I also duplicate that and take it to the other side, the slide of irritation and change its color, make it lighter. Just like that. All right, Then that's it, the M before anything, I'll just duplicate this file to start changing. And so, so at any point of your illustration, you'd like to change something without overwriting the original thing. You just have to duplicate it from the gallery outside. And it'll be easier for you to change whatever you want to change. And that's really cool. Now with a darker color, as you can see on the Create a new layer above my illustration and try to add some medical touches. As you can see here, I'm trying to emphasize on the edges of my illustration. This add some randomness to my illustration, like as if it's doable by a kid or anything or buy my kids or my creative side. I just love how bold it feels to add these black lines to my illustration and just add, it just added something on a really like how alive it took the illustration and how it borders everything around. All right, let's keep moving. Keep it really random and simple. Don't try to make it straight lines or anything like that. Just keep it very simple. And you're free to choose what to highlight and whatnot to highlight. For right? Now we'll talk about another thing which has masking in Procreate. If you want to mask AoA or inside another day, or you just create a new layer above that layer that you would like to draw N. And you just tap on the thumbnail of that layer and you'll find this menu here appeared. You chose clipping mask. You'll notice that this layer is masked sewing you draw inside of n Pi of the t-shirt here it's mass. There is another option here that you can do, which is alpha lock the same layer you'd like to draw and but it's not that accurate. I am. I don't like to use it so much and I prefer the club and mass because it's more editable and don't ruin the original layer that you have. And as you can see here, I dislike this effect of M, little doodles of flowers. Something that says a lot about this girl. How she loves her flowers and she loves her garden a lot. All right. And if you remember these boots, I can hear you is the envelope because I kind of know what I wanna do here. Just little dots like this or right? And let's make a clipping mask right in the jumpsuit to make some hatching like this to some lines too and change the direction or the orientation those lines to add some interests in sides for your illustrations and that'll make it so boring. The same thing for the bag. I will mask another layer in that layer and with a lighter color, I will keep patching like this in some directions. Decide that, Hey, I really love how it turned out and how the illustration is born alive. Now, if you remember the fault, so the names on it, I will make the same here. With just some scribbles or rides. I will add to the blushed cheeks here and change the color for it. Alright. Just keep adding. And now let's create another layer and try to write the word gardening with your free hand. Next, we'll add some special touch to your illustration. Because it's with your free hand writing. And we can just change the color for it. Just like this. And maybe change the color of the background, something with a 10th of pink or anything like this. Yeah, I really like to make that. And I feel that this basket here needs something. So let's just try it. The word guarding on it. And the little small, hard to show how much this growing loves her garden. All right. I think that's it. I really love how it turns out. It's very nice and turned out really smooth end duly, like your door, no link or something.
