1. Class Introduction: Colors are the magic that
gives meaning to our life. I feel that magic every single time I add colors
to my sketches. It does preserve his life into them and takes it to
a whole other level. In a way. Lighting is also very important when it
comes to painting anything. How the light can change the whole mood for a
drawing is just amazing. That's why in this class I'm
going to share with you guys my simple four steps to
color anything like a probe. It's a very interesting
class that will help you pay into your
sketches right away. We will learn together how
to play with values to make an interesting
balance in your artwork. Then we'll add
some local colors. And finally, we'll
do some magic with the shading and lighting
for our final piece. So just grab your iPad
and pencil and let's jump into the class and
head to the first lesson. Let's get started.
2. Class Project & Resources : So before starting our class, I first show you what you'll
need here in this class. It's very simple. You can use your iPad, a stylus that's compatible with your iPad, and Procreate app. You can also use the same steps that I'm going to show you today in the class with any drawing
software of your choice. In this class, you can use
any sketch of your own to start the painting process
and to follow along with me. Or you can easily head to the Resources section and
just download this sketch. Then I'm going to
paint in this class. After you apply the four
steps to your sketch, you can just finalize your artwork and then you
create a new project. From here, you can upload
your artwork, simple title, and any disruption or
common they want to add, and you just publish it with a fellow students here in
the class and with me. And I'd be more than happy to
share my feedback on that. Also, don't hesitate
to just head to the discussions board and start a conversation or
ask me anything, I'd be more than happy to
answer all your questions. Another thing I grew more
than thrilled if you just shared your artwork on
Instagram with this hashtag, paints like a pro by Omnia. That will help me see it. You can also tag me here and
this is my Instagram handle. I'll see your artwork
and I will share my stories that said for older resources in everything
you're going to need. So now let's head to
the first lesson.
3. Create the main shape : So for the first lesson here in this class, I'll be showing you guys the first step of the four easy steps for painting, which is creating the main shape for your sketch. I will show you how to do this. All right, So after you downloaded mine Sketch or use your own sketch, we will head to procreate, and then we'll take the opacity of the sketch a little bit down and we will create a new layer below that. And with the selection tool, the free hand selection tool, we will be going around our sketch just to select the whole outer shape of it to ads are colored to have a shape for our sketch and inclusive shape that we'll be using soon to color and to add the light and shade. It's a very interesting step that makes everything easier later. So just enjoy it and keep selecting. All right, I'll fast forward here and I'll see you by the end of the selection. And now that we find that the selection, we will just choose this color and just drag it and drop it like this inside the selection. And this is the main shape for our sketch. All right, So from here, you also use the selection tool to choose this part because it will be a whitespace. Let's just delete this and keep moving forward, and that's it. And as you can see here, I find allies to selection. And we created our first thing. And let's make the sketch again with full opacity and that's it for the first step, it was easy, right? So let's head to the next lesson.
4. Color Values : And now for the second lesson here we will be working on the color values. It's a very interesting way that you will see how it will be easy for you later when you're coloring will make a new layer here. And I will make a mask in the main shape or this sketch here. And we will call that values. And now we will just start adding values to this gray shape. And this step, all what you need to do is just define the contrast and define the balance in your artwork. It's here for you to decide which is dark, which is live for everything just to match later in the colors. It's really easy for you here to make these decisions before coloring, because when you color, you just get overwhelmed by the palette. This you just use two color. So when you address working here as, you know, like monochrome or with this grayscale, it's easy for you to decide the values is very interesting way and it will help you a lot in your paintings. So as you can see here, I chose this light color for the skin and a darker color for the sweater. And writes here, I'll make this area darker because it's in the inside of the sweater. So of course it's traded. And with the same color I'm painting here at the mouth, and then y for the eyes and the teeth. All right, let's keep going. And of course, dark color for the pupils. And you just keep going like this. Tell you finalize your whole illustration. You just keep adding contrast. Then keep adding different grades. Tell me find the right balance and write contrast in your illustration. All right, That's keep going. As you can see here, I'm adding some details here and there and the sweater. It makes it more interesting and not boring. All right? And that's it. It's a very simple step and you will know what is later, how it will help you in the coloring process. So let's now hit to our third step here in the class.
5. Local Colors : So now that we finalized the values for our artwork cleanly, just now head to adding the local colors. This is the color palette then I'm going to use here and you can use any colors of your own. It'll be really interesting now to start coloring after we decided which his dark and light. All right, so let's start here. I'm going to make a new layer here. Let's just group these two layers here and let's call it the values. And we will make a little small here to be like a guide for us for the dark and light tones when we're coloring here this big virgin. Oh, right, so now let's just create a new layer and we will just mask it into this main shape that we created in the first lesson. And we will call it the coloring, and this will be for our local colors. All right, let's get started. I'd like to start with the skin tones. So also the selection tool we will be selecting old the parse that has kin like her hands and her ears, their face and old ads to start coloring. After the first selection, you just drag the color. Does like this. And let's keep going. Same thing for the ears and the neck, and also the hands. Alright, I will now make a new layer also masked in the main shape for the hair. And I always choosing the color we have for the hair here in this color palettes that I've chosen before. Alright. I chose this orange color for the hair because adds more contrast and it gets it the really interesting personality here. All right, and now as you can see, him selecting the hair freely because it's already masked into the main shape that we created. And that's why the main shape that we created in the first lesson was so important guys, because it really saves a lot of time. All right, let's keep moving. I'm gonna make this rounded nose, right? And now for the mouse, I also select this. And then I'm going to make the layer of the mouse alpha lock to be able to draw the tongue and the teeth inside of it told me much easier. All right, Let's continue. I chose this green color for the sweater, so just select it and drag and drop. Just like this. I really love the contrast here between the green and the orange overrides. With the same steps. We're going to select the pants and we were going to give it that color. And for her boots, sky be this dark color in our palette. And the same color for this little walkie-talkie that she has here. All right, let's continue. Now. I'm going to use another shade of green here for these parts. Does think that. And here for this bands, I'm gonna go with that color. It's really amazing with the orange over here. And adds a lot of contrast to this. Now select these details and the sweater and start coloring that. All right? And this part of the boots as well. And that's it. Now we find that adding the local colors toward our artwork, hope you're following along with me right now. I just can't wait to see what you'll come up with by the end of this class. Now let's head to our final and fourth step here in this class, which is adding the light and shading are a character.
6. Lighting and Shading : And now for the most
interesting step and the closest to my heart
that we're adding the lights. For me, I think
adding the lights is actually the most
important step because it, it turns this flat illustration
or flat drawing into like real illustration or
just feels like her tune. More than this. It adds more depth, it adds more details. It does, gives it
a little light. Alright, so before starting
lighting this character, we will just have to decide where the
light is coming from. So in this case, I decide to make the lighting coming from the right side to help this
will affect our illustration, will be that the right
part will be more light, will be more colors
than the other part. The other part will
give the shadows. And I'm going to mention
all that later in a detailed class
about shadows amides. But for now let's just keep
it simple and let's start. So here we'll like
to do is to create a new layer here mast into
the main colors shape. And we will choose the multiply and this layer we
will call it shadows. Now let's choose the
soft brush does this. And we will start to
choose some color which is a little bit
reddish skin tones, and start painting with
the soft brush just like this in the opposite
side of the light. So you see where the
light is coming from. And on the other side you
just add the shadows, but because these are the
parts that light can treat. So this part of the nose, this part of the hands
and the ears, everything. So as you can see,
it's already added some depth to the face. It it just made it rounder. All right, for the close
here I just like to choose other color which is a
little bit bluish or purple. Just like this because
in the multiply layer, it adds more, it adds
more lifelike shadows. Just like that. And I just loved the effect of the soft brush. Made everything just
pop out of the screen. It just made everything rounder, it still flat anymore. So let's continue. And again, for this band and
her hair or right. Let's choose this
color for the hair. Yeah, I think this pinkish
color just goes amazing. Weather, orange hair. All right, let's
continue just like that. And now we're gonna make some
shadows here per the teeth. Choose the automatic selection, choose the teeth and the eyes and start making
some changes in them. But this pinkish color. And also let's add
some shadows here to add more depth to her mouth. Usually mouth is
darker from inside. Yeah, just like this. And also for her tongue. This automatic selection
tool in Procreate this. Amazing because it gives you the opportunity to
choose, you know, like little things at a time, start adding shadows it. All right, let's continue. And some orange shadows and
details here and there. Under the Browse, under
the nose, and so on. Also here for the band. I'm going to use this brush
to make some stripes. Maybe a light color
would be nice. Yeah, maybe smaller,
just like this. Yeah, I think it's really
interesting like this. So let's continue. All right. Now let's create a new layer
also mass for the lighting. So for the lighting layer, just like to change the blending mode here
into Color Dodge. And for the color dodge, it's really gives
a light effects. So you make sure to choose dark colors to make the
effect a little bit subtle. And let's see how it goes. You can see your face. And now we will head to
a really important part with the contact shadow. Contact shadow is a shadow that happens when two
surfaces, you know, like touch each other too close to each other for
the light to enter. So this part is really dark and the light
can reach there, so it's almost black,
it's really dark. So we will see how it goes. So this is the contact
shadows also multiply. And let's choose
this bluish color and with a small little brush, Let's add some
contact shadows year. You know, these parts
below the things. It's usually a contact
shadow part. Yeah. These details here in
that then this sweater, the folds and this leaves and
everything just like this. So you can see it's ads,
immediately lifelike effect. And it's really nice. All right. You just keep going of
the contact shadows in older parts that
meets each other. Exactly like this, like inside
the bucket and all that. And the folds in the pants. That's really nice. And inside this boat, It's a nice effect after all. And also behind that walkie-talkie
and inside her hands. All right, let's keep going. Let's go back to the
reddish color to add some shadows here and
there and the face. Right? And below the band. Here. The hair. And maybe on the eyelids. Does something like this. As you can see it
all that just adds some sense of details
and sense of phenol. It became more interesting. I just, I feel like it's, it looks really nice now. And the colors are
really vibrant. You just keep going
and adding details to your illustrations that you
feel that it's nice that way. I really hope that you are
following along if you found anything because you
just can't understand, you can just leave your comment below in the discussion board. Let's keep moving. And now as you can
see, I just added a new layer for
the final touches, which has just a little
reflections in her eyes, light on her hair. Some funds is the colors. It doesn't have to be so real, but it just adds a little bit of nice effect and nice touch
here to the character. Alright, let's keep building. Just add maybe salmonella like eyelashes here
for the character. That's keep woman is you can see I'm adding some
details to the sweater. So metal stripes and so and so I'm leaving
here and there. Just some final touches. All right. I think
that's more than enough here. All right. Now as you can see,
I'm just playing with the hue saturation to make some effects at the jacket
bathing needs to be changed. It's now your chests the change. You need to change it. And you colors anything the two field that
needs to be better. It's your chance.
Now. As you can see, it just GOT the
shadows a little bit darker to add more contrast. All right. So let's continue. And here for the hair, I'm
going to add some shadows. Some more shadows
here behind her neck. Let's make it darker
just like this. I really like it this way. All right, That's keep holding. And some final touches here
to make the mouth straight. Now it's my chance
to go around and see if anything
just needs edits. If any parts was missed
by the selection that's finalized that and
work more on it. Just say this and that sense. And that's how far we've
gone here in this class, from sketch to the values, to the local colors, and finally to the
lighting and shading. And that's our final piece. And now I'd like to make
some final touches. I just duplicated this, this whole file and here are just flat
and older there is. And I hit the, the noise to add some noise. And now playing with
the Gradient Map, you have a lot of color options
that you can play with. And so you can see
it just changed the whole mood for
our character. You can play the way
you want here in this, in these effects adjustments
that Procreate has. Its just very nice Also for
the chromatic aberration, I just feel that it
adds more interest in this or your final
piece before sharing. Let's maybe head to this color. Something like this
and say, well maybe. And you can also play
with the blending modes. And everything will be great. Tele feel that your
artwork is just done that I had set
for this class. I think we're done here. And now it's my turn to thank you guys for
finalizing this class. I hope you learned something today and you
followed along with me. I just can't wait to see your illustrations down in
the project section below. And as I told you before, I'm waiting for your questions
or anything that you need to ask about in my
illustration process, and I'd be more than
happy to answer that. Also. Don't forget to
