About This Class

Welcome to the class!

In this course, you will learn how you can make your own handmade leather sleeve with recycled leather following traditional leather crafting methods.

This project is extremely easy and fun to make and you can use it to improve your leather skills or as a gift for some one special.

Since we are going to be working with previous leather projects, it is inferred you already know how to work with leather. However if you don't, don't worry, I'll guide you from the beginning on preparing the leather to finishing the sleeve.

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to unstitch saddle stitching.
  • How to prepare the leather.
  • How to stitch the sleeve
  • How to paint and polish the edges of your sleeve.

The project for this class is to create your own leather sleeve. No template is required for this lesson.

Let's get started!

1. Welcome to the class: Hello and welcome to this class, where you will learn how to reuse the other parts from previous projects and transform them into a beautiful and simple handmade card sleep. This project, I'll show you how to onstage handmade saddle stitching, preparing the leather for new projects, and constructing those lead from start to finish. Because we'll be reusing some other parts. It is inferred but not necessary that you will have some previous knowledge from another handling you haven't worked with before. Don't worry. I'll guide you through every step so you can see how to prepare the leather pieces and create this simple yet elegant leathers. Leave without any further ado. Let's get started. 2. Recycling the leather: For this project, I want to show you how you can recite the linear basis that you might have at hand from previous unfinished projects. It might be the case that project got canceled has a flaw or you simply want to change a bart. In this case, I've decided to change the exterior, another part of this passport holder to another type of brown leather I've got. But this one, as you can see, is an excellent conditions. The other piece is already lined with black pig skin, so I won't go through the process of lining the nether in this class since it's a recycled part. But if you wish to see more about it, I've got several other classes were this topic is covered. To separate the P's we want from the rest of the smaller pieces we need to stitch the edges, will do this with his crotch 0 and a pair of scissors, any type of scissors will do. Try to find a weaker stitch in the assembly. In this case, this is where the leather pieces or join with the larger one on the edge. So at this stage, on that side and try to loosen the stage with your stretch all by carefully introducing it between the threads and the leather. Then tried to cut the threads from the other side to the wallet to lose both threads. This Holder was cell stage, the cells touching you one of the strongest and most durable stitches there is. So stitching any cells which project will take more time than usual since you have to do this manually, begin removing the threads would just crush all. Tried to do this facing the tip of the old outwards, the nether. So you don't have the nice surface or the major area. When you feel your throat is getting too long, you can always cut the excess and check how your project isn't stitching on the other side as well. Continue to do this until the business completely separate from the rest of the project. As you can see, the major pieces now separate. You can proceed to store any other pieces left for future projects. When doing this, we want to recover as much as possible. So we would cut the edge of another piece. It should be very close to the stitching holes. I have this link card holder for reference as a guide for though they mentioned just to make sure that width and length of the cardholder can be covered with a brown piece. And in fact, this large piece is enough to make two power holders, but just enough. So we've got the leather will have to be very careful to ensure we save this area before measuring where the mark the points. So for cutting, make sure the edge you're working with is straight from the edge. Mark two points are the same side at a distance just enough to cut the leather. Stitching calls are present. Please, your ruler connecting both points and with your exact a knife cut the excess of leather. If you happen to how small marks from the stitching holes, don't worry too much. This will disappear once you apply some edge paint to the BSW. 3. Cutting the leather: Now that you have removed the stitching holes from the piece, you've decided to reuse. It's time to set the right measures of the letter B's for your project. As we've discussed previously, there will only be room for two slim card holders. If this is the case with you as well, I suggest you first got the total length of the holders to make sure both pieces, specially the same ones finished and then separate both parts from the main piece. Gives you how our reference product and hand. You can use it to guide yourself and its measurements. With your ruler, measure the total length you want your holders to be and would just crush all or leather pen markup points over the desired measurement. I suggest you do this on the side of the letter n naught in the middle of the piece. Repeat this process on the other side of the letter. This way you will have two reference points were to code your leather piece with the ruler and executor knife got the letter to a smaller length. Once you've got the length of your pieces, you can now divide the entire layer, but the amount of parts you wish for every card holder. When you're finished, we can now proceed to prepare the parts in the next lesson. 4. Preparing the piece: Now that we hover pieces Chorale, let's prepare them to transform them into cardholders. The first thing to do is to make any cuts or details within the main surface of the letters since it will be very difficult to do one stitched and not harm the rest of the world. I'll use a two centimeter punch hole to make a hole in the middle. So when the user wants to take out some cars, he can easily do so by simply pushing them with his fingers. If you also wish to do this with the help of a leather pen and your ruler mark two points on the sides of the letter that divide the length of the piece in half. Then when you really are connecting both parks, pass a straight line with your leather pen. Mark a point in the middle of that line. That is a center of our cardholder. Next market, total length of the whole bunch or halfway through each side of the center, you just marked horizontally and vertically as you see in the video. The whole bunch should then be placed within the four points. You just mark. Pleasure leather over your poly blog Burma and with a punch hole in place, Here's your polymer to make the center hold. When you're done. The next step is to bring in making the stitching holes. We'll start with the ones that should go on the sides of the card holder. Bend your wallet as if it was in its final position and mark where the last digit on one side. Then measure the distance from that point to the upper side of the holder and do the same for the other side so that both marks are the same level in the surface of the cardholder. I'll be using another edge crease to mark the distance between the edge of the letter and stitching holes. But you can use any tool you wish, such as a willing divider or a marking a straight line with your leather pen. Once you're done marking both sides with the holder, place your leather over your mat and your diamond chisels mark with your start punching the stitching holes. As you can see, I place a CISO one space inwards the leather to have a nice position from the upper side and the first digit. Then with your chisel in place, Here's your polymer to punch the holes. Make sure the hose goes through the entire piece and continue your way until you reach the mark you've just made with your leather pen. Repeat the process for the other side of the letter and make sure both sides have their last pigeon holes where the line between them. You can check this by counting the amount of holes there are on one side and then counting the holes from the other side. Now, repeat this process with the upper part of the cardholder. Begin with the sides where you've just made the whole, since you have a good reference of the first hole from both sides. Mark the line where the hole will go with the aggressor and then proceed to make the holes of the upper part. The first and last halls will be the same as a first holes you made on each side of the upper part. Finally, on what will be the back part of the holder? Mark and punch this teaching holes that will be on the upper side by first identifying where the first and thus hold will go. Do this by marking the letter with your edge crease or just enough to know where the mark lines will intersect as you see in the video. Then proceed to make the stitching holes with a chisel and poly mallet. The piece is now ready for the next steps. In the next lesson, we'll prepare the opposite sides of the card holder. 5. Painting the upper sides: Once we've got the piece cotton ready, the first thing to do is to paint the sides and the whole we've just made in the middle. You can use your preferred type of leather edge paint for this job. In this case, I'll be using a hearable edge paint from a brand called Bernice. This pain has a matte finish and looks really nice with brown leather. To begin with, check your paintball well, and then with your edge applicator, carefully pass some paint over the first upper side until the edge is completely covered in paint. Wait a few minutes until the paint dries and continue your way through the center hole. I'll be using that different paint applicator that fits constantly through this hole. Again, leave the paint is dry and when it's ready, then the last edge of corresponds to the upper side of the card holder. When you're finished the PACF for some 20 minutes before applying the second coat of paint. When you're sure the paint is completely dry, repeat the entire process again. In the three sections, you'll notice how the painting is looking way better now with the second code than before. Since the first gold help cover any exposed fibers on the edge. The second call, take more time to dry. So it tried to leave you with the sides in a vertical position and wait for around 20 minutes before you can continue moving forward with your design. 6. Stitching the upper sides: Once the edges of the upper size or dry, you can seal them and give some Polish where it wouldn't etch burnisher, also called a slicker. Because we don't want the edges to be extremely shiny. We'll just pass a sleeker a few times where the painted surfaces of the upper sides in the middle circle, just to see the paint wants dried. You can feel the results by looking at the edges in when you're happy with it, yourself, with your thread and needles and bee's wax. You can use any thread you want. In this case, I'll be using a brown liner thread because they want the thread to match the color with this leaf. To know how much regulate. Use your ruler to measure the length that you're going to stitch and multiply the length by four. That will be the length you need for Situ. However, I always like to leave an extra 30 centimeters to make sure I've got enough thread to handle it comfortable, if you're obese, works through the entire thread, if you're using line and threat, this Phred usually comes very loose and with little or no bees wax on it. Wants to make sure your thread is more manageable with a beeswax. And ensure that the statues, or if you're blood type with the wax when you pass them through. Make sure the edges have enough wax to be able to flag the thread. As you'll see in the video. You can flatten the edges with anything really, even your nails. In this case, I'll use the tip of the wooden sleepers to flattening. Then insert the threat to the whole of the needle and tried to stitch the thread with a tip of the needle. You can flip them apart with the needle will be certainly the threat. So it's see-through for you to insert. Once you've inserted the tip of the thread, begin pulling it backwards through the metal as well as through the hole as you've seen in the video. And then simply just pulled apart of the thread that was inserted all the way backwards. So it fixes itself with the rest of it and locks it in place. Repeat this process with the other needle on the other side with a threat. When you're ready, it's time to start stitching the upper side. Begin in the first hole of the sideway, inserting one needle and pulling both needles with one hand to make sure the thread measures the same in both sides. Then insert the first needle through the next hole and with a needle and certainly in the leather, pull it out of the grabbing it with a second needle so you have some support while doing so. Make sure you don't stitch thread while passing the needle through the holes. If you happen to do this on stage, the needle moving it backwards and throughout this digit again, you'll have your first stitch done in no time. Follow the same method to stitch the entire side of the sleep. When you're done doing so and urease last stitch, go back one entire stitch and then POSIX thread that is in front of this leaf to the backside, that is not noticed. It's finished. When both the rest are on the backside, you can cut them and repeat the process with the other side of this leaf. 7. Stitching the card holder: To prepare this leaf for stitching it, the first thing we need to do is to fix the size we're going to stitch together. For that, we'll use a small amount of leather blue on one of the edges and leave the edge press until the glue is dry. And we can make this teaching pulls on the backside of the sleep. With your finger. Pass some blue over the inner side of the sleeve, as you can see in the video, and then join both sides together. You can use some office paperclips to hold bold letters together while the glue dries up. I found this clamps to be very effective on large sites such as belts, wallets, and handbags. Once the glue is dry it off in around ten minutes approximately, you can punch the stream holes from the back of his sleep using your diamond CISO and polymath, just as you did on the front side. This time however, those first holes you previously are going to be the guide for where you have to place your chisel and start punching holes. Since the first halls have already been functioned stitch. You'll need to start from the second hold onwards. Remember that little only holds the leather just enough while the stitching takes place. Since this leaf is bent over, there is a lot of tension trying to unfolded and the glue is holding those pieces together. Barney won't make it forever. Only continue to punch the holes and stitch the edge when you are ready with your tools on hand. In case of the stitching, just as you did with the upper sides, measure the length of this leaf inside and multiply that measurement by four to know the amount of threat that you will need to join this leaf. Then at 30 centimeters to the entire length and proceed to wax the thread and attach the needles in place so that you can begin the stitching process. When you have both sides of the thread with the same measurement, you're ready to begin stitching this leaf. We'll start with this top edge. I cross stitching the first stage of this leaf. You'll need to pass the needle from one side to the other, from the top of this leaf on one side and do the same with the other needle from the other side, as you can see in the video. Then pull both threads to make sure that first stage as well tightened and proceed this stage, the entire edge. When you're finished with the first edge, do the same for the second edge and your sleeve will be ready for the next process, which is painting the edges. During this process, you can hold both letters together with one club you wish to let us leave does not come loose when moving forward. 8. Painting and finishing the sleeve: To paint the edges of your car holder is very simple. Since you've already know how the process is done from painting the upper parts of the slave. However, because this time we had to join both sides together, this makes the leather to become thicker and details on the joining, such as glue, are going to be visible. Before painting the edges. It's convenient to send them first using a small piece of 220 grids on paper. You don't have to send them very strong, only enough to take any excess of fibers and glue away from the edges. With your edge paint applicator begins apply paint on whilst the edge she slowly and carefully so that you don't drip any excess of the sites. You can check if there's any paint excess while you're moving forward and take it out with your fingers. When you are ready with one side, repeat the process on the other side of this leaf. Leave this leaf to rest on surface that won't touch the edges. This paint I'm using take some time to dry. When enough time has passed. You can repeat the painting process and other time for both edges. You'll notice how the second coat of paint is going to look more even. That's because you're now painting on top of the edge code and no fibers are around to absorb the paint on the leather piece. It's always convenient to pass at least a second code to any leather as you're painting. When the pieces dry, the only thing left to do is to clean any possible excess of glue that is left inside sleep. You can do this with a plastic bone folder by just inserting the folder in the sleeve and gently rubbing the edges to remove any unwanted material. At this point, you have finished your sleeve. You can try this live by inserting some cards. Your filters leave a little tough at first, but in time, the leather will break and we'll make your sleep more comfortable to wear. 9. Final project: Now that you've seen how these cards leave was made its thing for you to make your graph sum all the other projects you won't use anymore and prepare them to make your own card holder. You can also do it from scratch as a new product view wish. When you're finished, don't forget to share your products so their students can see it as well. Thank you so much for watching. I hope you have enjoyed the class and I'll see you in the next one.
