1. About this Class: why Inclusive Greeting Cards: Hi, This is the favorite time of the year for many people, it's Christmas time,
it's Hanukkah time, and many families around
the world are celebrating. I come from an
interfaith family, though we were celebrating
both Christmas and Hanukkah, I like to send some
seasons greetings that are more inclusive
and interfaith. Today we're drawing
a very simple, cute Christmas illustrations. Christmas card stands for Christmas and Hau car greetings. And you can be sure
that if you send those, they will be welcomed in many interfaith
families or any family. We like it because
they're cheerful. Easy, nice illustrations. We are drawing two
cards, one is easier, the other one is more,
slightly more complicated. At the very beginning of family will explain
Step by step, we will draw with fences, then flying with ink. Eventually, we will
add the watercolor. They are quite
quick and cheerful. I hope that you like the idea. Hi, I'm Elizabetha, a watercolor
artist based in Italy. I love teaching and I have over 20 classes on skill share. This is the experience I
had when I was a child. It was very nice and I think
that it's nice to send greetings include more religions and more inclusive the sketches. A beginner friendly
and as usual, you won't get lost
because I will explain every single step in a
come with me and sketch these cards and send them to
your interfaith friends or your secular friends or anyone
that is in a holidayhood.
2. Project Description: You can paint with me
one of these two cards that merge Nuca and
Christmas traditions. In one there is Nuca menora
or Nuka and Santa Head. In the other one there is a
playing with the Dred and a Christmas bobddel is a game that is played by
Jewish children at Nuca. Your project will
be to paint one of these inclusive cards with
me or both? Even better. I'm asking you if you have
your own family tradition, or if you can come up with the new ideas with
different religions, with different traditions,
and you can merge so that we can have very
inclusive greeting cards. I'm more familiar with the
Hanukkah and Christmas. I have painted these two
celebrations together, but if you know
other traditions, please do paint them, sketch them, and post them
in the project gallery. That would be really amazing. Don't forget to applaud your projects in the
project section. Once you finish, please
do it because that helps other students to understand what kind of results they
can achieve with this class. Let's go to supplies, explanation, and then
we start sketching.
3. Supplies for your Project: Now let's talk about materials. The materials are very
basic for this class. You need some cards
for watercolor. I'm using the Fabriano Poscas. I'm also using aqua
Watercolor Postcajt. Any watercolor posta we do. Or you can take a
regular watercolor sheet five and you cut it in half. Then I have a very limited
palette of colors. I'm using some cadmium
red. Any red will do. There is not a red
that you must use. What is important is values. You don't have to
use a specific red. It can be red or alis
in crimson or pyro red. Just use any red, you
have yellow ochre. I'm using Cam yellow. Any yellow with
even lemon yellow, yellow ochre, and
primary yellow, then I'm using some purple. If you don't have some purple, you can create it with
ultramarine and red, but I think you have it
two different blues. I'm using ultramarine
and sky blue. It can be composed blue, thalo blue, or eruan. Any of those will do burn
paints gray if you have it. And I have also used
a touch of sap green. If you don't have sap green, any other green will do. Of course, you need
a mixing space like a pallet or a white dish. The tool for a drawing circles, you can use a copper,
anything you have. You can also use the
base of a small char, Anything round you can use as a guide to draw your circles. I have used this one. It's very handy of Penc HB two. I like to use two B as a pen
with permanent waterproof, I like to use sepia brown in. I have a special
one that I can put in a fountain pen and
it's called a trains. I will write all the details in the description section of this class or you can use any waterproof
pen that you have. There are also fine
liners that come in P. This is micron and it
comes in sepia as well. I like this fountain
pen, Slmmy Safari. But you can use any pen, but it must say waterproof. A small brush for water color, Not to be because the
postcar is little. The brush of the size
must be proportion to the size of the paper I'm using. The size. It's a number eight, but this is the brand. Just make sure that it is fine enough that you feel
comfortable with it. You can use it even finer
or bigger if you prefer. It's very much a matter
of personal preference. A white pen for touches a ruler can
be nice to have, although I like to eyeball
my distances and get some kitchen paper to blot our brushes and to fix mistakes. Two jars of waters. That's it, let's dig in, Let's start painting
our Chris Mu.
4. Card 1: Menorah with Santa Hat: This is going to
be our first card. This is very easy for beginners. We're going to draw
Nuca, Menorah, and Santa Head so that the two symbols of Nuca and
Christmas are both present. What we're doing are
drawing a line here. The base of our
menanucanora has nine arms. Let's say that the
menorah can go from here to here, right? Then we find the here
in the center draw. I can really eyeball, I will draw a central
candle holder and then four candle holder on the right and candle holders
on the left hand side. I can really eyeball, I find the half and then one half and half
by four is easy, then 12.5 Now I can
draw line here. Remember that we're going to
erase these pencil lines. In any case, because we're
going to outline with our ink, then I can roughly draw our candles to see if the
composition satisfies us. Putting the border lines
because you need to see them, but you can draw lighter lines, the easier to be erased. Okay, here we put our
Santa head like this. This is the fur border. And then okay, so you must try and
draw your menora too close to the edge of
your drawing sheet. This is going to
be our Santa head here and now very easy outline. We start with the menora itself. It's very stylized as you see. It's not a complicated one here. You can just draw
some melting wax, try and make them all different. It doesn't have to be perfect. Right here, some wavy lines like this, because this is the fur natural, it's a head soft, so straight lines,
but very wavy. And here, the furry pompon here, below the candles that
hold the Santa hat. Okay. Now, wait a minute
or two until the ink dries and we can erase
the pencil lines. Now I take my eraser, I erase the pencil lines. Now I have erased all my
pencil lines and I can start painting the candles using two different shades of
blue, ultramarine blue. Sky blue like a
fall or cerulean. In this case, this
is a composed blue by Mijello I think
sky blue will do. How do we feel the candles? We will apply the darker
blue in the bottom. You can make all four together. Just the bottom. Be careful. Use a small brush and then from top you can use the other blue. Rinse your brush
once in a while, They bleed together and
the effect is very nice. You can drop some dark
blue if you want. Same with the other
four candles. Be careful here the head. Be very careful not to draw
on the head, but if you do, it is always possible to fix
mistakes in water color, our ultra marine, that whereas
Christmas color is red, hanuca color is blue. We will paint blue candles. Okay, now we'll let
these candles dry. We can paint our Menora. I can speed up the process with a heating tool or a hair dryer. Mena for the menoraI
will take some yellow, beautiful color, very
versatile yellow. You can use some lemon yellow. I have taken some yellow
these, you mix them? Not completely. You have
some color variation. And you can start
filling your squares with this color here. The blue has blurred, has bled into the yellow. But okay. Now, just to give some variation as though this was
maybe an old manora, I can take some purple here and there, just bleeding. Same with some sap green, very, very sparingly. You
don't have to do this. You can leave it light,
okay, Like this. You have some color variation. You can even red color
to make it more vibrant. It's start to draw. Just stop, happy to be in each other. Okay. So we have
a ancient me now. I always start
drawing and painting from the left hand
side towards my right, because I'm right handed. If you're left handed,
you will do the opposite. So I paint the flame and
my last touch would be the Santa head for the flame. I stay very simple. I just add a touch of color, a touch of red to my yellow. More yellow than orange, Like this orange, warm yellow. I always use the same colors, and I have some
harmony in the colors, and the whole drawing
will be more cohesive. If I use a limited palette, I could have used an orange, but I have preferred to use
the colors that I use in, in the other parts
of the drawing. And I stay very simple. Just like this. Oh, here we don't have the, I will draw it later out
front part, the Santa head. For the Santa head, you take some of our that we have used to make the orange. I draw the left side
of my head like this. Even more color if you like. Like this. Now we just clean water. You rinse your brush, and you just use clean water. And you go towards the right. Just drop some color
here and here. And that's it. Now we need the head to dry because
we need to paint the fur. I can always use my
hair dryer. Okay. Now that everything is I can, I can pretend that I
have light coming from the right so that I have shadows always on
the left hand side, I take some stronger
ultramarine blue and I will paint
shadows below the wax. Here, along the, below the head, you
have shadow obviously. And here then you
slightly blend it. You clean the brush,
you slightly dry. And now you blend it. You don't have a hard edge, but you will have a soft
edge which is prettier. You must be quick
before color dries, you need to blend it. Remember that color
variation is always very nice when you paint water color. Okay, now we need some gray. For the shadows on the
fur of Santa head. I take my out Marine blue
and I add a touch of burn, Siena and I have a
very light gray. We said that light is
from the right hand side. Like this. Same here. Just little dots here. Okay. Like this. Now I see that this is not dark
enough. You know. That has a tendency
with the color, has a tendency to
dry much lighter. So I redo my process
just I apply some red on the left hand side and
then I blend it like this. A lot of color must be vibrant. And then you blend it. Okay. I would say that this is ready and we go to
the second card.
5. Card 2: Cat Playing with Bauble and Dreidel: The second part is slightly more advanced in terms of drawing. If you prefer, you can try
on a piece of scrap paper, just in pencil, to make sure
that your drawing is nice, but I can assure you that
it is not right or wrong. Just do what you can and will be very appreciated and handmade
with a color of cards. We put a cat here, Nova, for the little body here you put another round here for the head of the large head, means kitten. It's cut if the proportion is a head larger
than in reality. Here to draw, the
cat is very curvy. Here you have his little body. Here you have the back here you have side inside
the oba. He goes like this. Neck here, you will have a half. You see two thirds
from the thigh. His belly here, little arm, fat, little arm, little p. Here
you have the head tilted. We make not a perfect oval, but the top head is narrow
and it goes down like this. It's like a trapezoid. And you see you put his
little ears the side, this is the nose,
a little triangle on the lower part
of his little face. Small eyes on sides of his nose. Here you can have a smiling
face. Serious face. Serious face in cats, we draw his little
p here because he's playing with the Christmas
bubble and the drier. This is our cat. Then we need to play
with composition. We need a small buble
here in this direction. For instance, I will
use this guide. You could take a
small glass here. Okay, this is the Bob here. We place the dry. To draw. The Dre is easy, but it requires some care. Some tips. You can use a ruler, but I prefer to eyeball
it straight line here. Here, it's slanted parallel. And slit it here. Some perspective, same here. Now we need to make a
house on the opposite. We need to make a triangle. It will be exactly in the
middle of this line like this. It goes like this, but you see that it's in the
middle of this line, in the center of this line. And then it goes upward
here and upward here. Then in the center of
this line, you go upward. The handle is pointing in the same direction
of the Dredle. The cute cat is playing with a Christmas bubble symbol
of Christmas and Dredle. That is a game played by
Jewish children on Hanukkah. Now we can apply and
make it perfect. You remember the little body, this cute par round here, You can make it slightly fury. And this is our little cat
and we forgot the tail. Like this. And now the rado. Remember to slightly
round the corners. Don't draw them too sharp. Now we let this try. Of course, once again, you can use a hair
dry or a heating tool before erasing
your pencil lines. Okay, now I love ginger cats, but there will be too many
colors fighting for focus. I think that gray
card would be nicer. We can go on with the gray that we have
done for the first card. Mixing burn with
ultramarine blue. It makes a nice gray mix until you find a
gray that you like. We paint it here. Also, we can pretend that
light is from the hand on the right hand side
make more color. I can, you see slightly pre
wet my cat on this side. And then I can just pull the
color towards this side. Just leave the white
boots here. Here too. You can leave white
boots here Here You paint the outer of the
ear and for the muzzle, you can make a lovely curve
like this, like this. And just painting, make some
dark gray with your colors. And you just drop here where
you think you have a shadow. Okay, we can always come
back when it's dry. Right? Let's paint the red. Now we take our burn sienna. We make it slightly cooler
with the touch of our gray. And we paint very
lightly the dred. We like it dry before
applying shadows. We can go to go and we
need our red here too. I can just paint the left hand side and then I will pull the color. Just just be careful to leave some white space
here for highlights. Okay, you can drop
more color here. Very simple. Now we let this dry and we come back
for a final shadows. Now we take a
darker bien shadow. This side will be in shadow, this side will be in shadow
also will be in shadow. Side of the handle
will be in shadow. Now we take some water down red and we put
it on the nose. Here the ears. And make sure that this
is very dry and we can paint the gold on the bubble. Here we go back to our
mixture of yellow, ocher and yellow that we
have used for the menora. And here it is. Now we need some cast, a shadow, otherwise
they seem like flying. And we take our gray, the same that we have
used for the cat, but we add some purple. We just add some color
to make a variation. If it is too red, you can
always add some blue. But we need to create a
different color than the cat. Just add a touch of purple. Okay, the shadow will go on
this side slide. From here. Shadow is important
to just root. Our objects, the little car around the pause like this. Now we need to
bring forth shadows here on the surface
of the drive. So we need to wait
until it dries. Now that is dry, I can just add some blue here. And we immediately
give a darker, darker burn sienna like this burn sienna here. We need to make four
different colors. Light, burcienadcienadkt
here and here. Also darker, but this is
going to be the dark. We need one more layer. We take some blue
very carefully, we just paint the face. I will now add some burn Siena so that the four faces
are all very different. Okay, There is an empty space here where you can write
seasons, greetings. I'm not good at calligraphy. I will not write in
calligraphy just on the back. I will write with my normal
hand writing on the back, I will write season
screting from Elizabeth. But if you have an calligraphy, you can write it here. If you don't want to write
it here because like me, you don't have a calligraphy. You can take some of the red, like this, carefully splatter. Just be careful not to splatter on what you
have just painted. Okay, same. It means. Ocher means cold.
It's very festive. If you accidentally
splatter some gold on the cat, well, okay. Now I would like to have some more difference between
the cat and the shadow. So I take some purple and just around the touch
points with the floor, I take a larger brush for most platters in
gold, yellow ocher. Okay, And even on the
cat, it looks nice. Now, the last detail is some shadow here on
the golden part, on the boo, you can use black. I will take some paints. Gray and just a
golden shadow here. Some more yellow here. Okay, now that
everything is dry, you can also add some details
with your white jell pen. And here you can put some
little highlights here. And this line in white. Okay? You know what, I'd rather have it
in brown like this. Okay. Here, because it's dark. You have darker lines. Here also is from here. All the lines that are
on your left hand side must be dark face, but you can leave it
like this little cat. You can live it
like this. This is our second seasons cretins card, inclusive card with Christmas and Hanukkah
symbols, and that's it.
6. Conclusions: Congratulations, you have
finished your two cards. I'm sure that you
found that easy. It's time to send those
postcards for your friends, for your interfaith friends, or your secular friends. I hope you upload your project
in the gallery so that other students can see what kind of results
you can achieve. You must upload it in the project section
and it's very easy. You must do that
from a computer. It's more difficult from phone. But if you do it from
your personal computer, from your PC, it's easy. It's very important
for the class. I also ask you to tag me if you post your
cards on social media. I'm on Instagram. You can find me very easily
under my name, Elizabethafur. Also, it's very important to leave a review for this
class because it helps the channel and it helps other students to
discover the class. Thanks a lot for having
painted with me. I'll see you in my next class.
