This project is very easy and fun to make. I'll guide you from the beginning from preparing the leather to the end, and once you've learned and mastered these techniques, you can apply them to any leather project you wish.

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to prepare your template.
  • How to prepare and glue your leather.
  • How to make your stitching holes.
  • How to stitch the sleeve
  • How to polish the the edges of your sleeve.

The project for this class is to create your own hair comb sleeve using the template provided in the project section.

To stitch the sleeve we'll be using traditional saddle stitching without a stitching pony. If you haven't seen saddle stitching before, you can watch my class on how to make a handmade leather wallet, where this technique is explained in detail.

Let's get started!

1. Welcome to the class: Hello everyone and welcome to this class. Will you learn how to make a simple, yet beautiful handmade her gums live, made from leather. In this class, I'll show you how to prepare your template. Prefer the leather stitched leather and finish the edges for the project for this lesson will be to make your own spirit gum do There's leave using the template provided. You can use any type of leather your wish. So without any further ado, let's get started. 2. Preparing the template: Let's begin our project. Download and print a template for this class that is in the project section. Then called the template from the rest of the paper, leaving a small x's are on the edge of the sign. Because bond paper is very light and bends peacefully, we need to give it some stiffness to work properly. Glutes amplitude a piece of cardboard or cable paper like the one I'm using in the video. You can use any type of glue you wish. In this case, I'll be using the same blue I use for the leather. I found this type of blues were great for templates and Kerberos since they don't come easily after many uses. When the pieces are called the excess of paper that was left are under the sign of the template. You want this to be as neat, straight and precise as possible. So because of this, I'll be using a cotton ruler and my except to life. You can go ahead and use them as well, or if you wish, use your scissors. I do recommend however, you try doing this with a ruler and nice. Templates needs to be very well God and precisely measures, which is why this technique has its advantages. You can coat around the edges with your scissors once you're done with the straight lines, and when you're ready, we can now proceed to huddle our leather in the next lesson. 3. Preparing the leather sides: Now that we've got our template ready to use, we need to choose the type of leather we want for our leaf. In previous projects, I've used the natural colors show Cordova and had this piece left. I'll be using it to match the other products and take advantage of the entire level piece. In fact, I'll be using it once more for another project later on. But for now I'll stick with what I've got here. Laser template or the leather and we do a scratch all MOG the outline on the template. You can also go days were a little band. If you have one. Mark two identical bonds for this project. We can now start coding our leather pieces when it cutting ruler and X-Acto knife. Guide yourself with your scratch out to have a very straight line through the outline I you see in the video. And then firm declares that cutting ruler over the letter and cut it. Don't press hard with acceptor knife is always better to pass a knife several times if necessary to get it down to force it. If you force it, it can bend the leather and if it's too soft or the knife could go somewhere else and can cause damage to the leather or yourself. Always remember to how a sharp blade window doing this. For the round edges. Again, dreaming out small pieces and angle until the edge is completely rounded as you've seen the video. And do these for all the edges of the template. So when you have your pieces cut out, you'll need to start considering the thickness of your product. If you align your leather, you'll be adding considerable thickness to the project, as you can compare here with a DJ and I've shown. So for this project I'll do is completely online than natural. This way I can also have a natural edge finish on, later on. What comes up next is to push the solution holes so indicative or to punish them, you can use a winged divider, which is like a compass tools that you can open or close to indicate other sorry, distance between the H and the stitching. Or you can use an eraser as well. The edge crease or however has a fixed distance. You can compare how false tools mark the leather and decide on how you want to work better. Because the leather I'm using is light and shows any scratch with details present clearly. I'll go with the wind divider. I found this tool is way more discreet from the user and it helps you make a much fun work. So 15 centimeters and start your markings one centimeter from the top edge of this leaf Plaza divider along the entire edge until you reach the other side of the b's are the same distance from where you started. To make the stitching holes. Use your diamond chisels, will be using a 26 bronchi muscles for this project. Plays your leather over our softmax or poly block. I had an old man I didn't use anymore and found that it worked very well with the sheath cells. They're not designed for that purpose, so, so they will wear faster than a blog bar. I want you to have a mind that sometimes you can replace it too far another, as long as they're safe to use. The math, for instance, is soft and doesn't harm your chisel tips. So for this steps, you'll also be using a polyhedron laser chisel where you start on marking the leather with you when divider with your polio hammer bunch the liver during this step is not necessary to how the holes wide open and bunch since we will be doing this again, when we join both pieces, move along the entire piece using your six bronchi. So on straight lines and you do bronchi muscles on curved lines. When you're finished, then the next step is to polish the scenes, the stage or farther handled. Also have a logo stamp. This might be a good time to put into for moving forward. The upper edge of both pieces with some water using your fingers against the water doesn't go away the sides. So the businesses were on 30 seconds and then it would your water, nice furniture polish those with edges, Use the edge of the burnisher. Those feeds the leather thickness. And after rubbing it for a while, you'll notice the edge feels very smooth and shiny is nicely convert to a raw edge. When you're done doing this, apply a small amount of Persian Gulf over the edge with your finger and with a small piece of canvas until you hear up correcting solid field. Check the edge. And when you are happy with how it shines and finished, do the same for the over bar to the second piece as well. It's now time to join both pieces together to apply some blue near the edge of the front b's M, guide yourself with the holes, bunches biology, so be careful don't blood towards the outer side of the holes and not in the inside of the piece. So we repeat the process with a Saigon and other bees and then carefully join both pieces together. Make sure you they'll disorderly. It's a good time. We need both pieces to be as precisely join us. For the next step. We'll give away pressing your fingers. There was another until both sides are we'll fix together. You have another HMO, you can use it as well. Another hammers usually have a phase and it looks white, so when you hammer the letter, it doesn't get marked. The last step is to punch the holes again, we did it by 12 soil and goals for both pieces to this leaf for stitching. And you can see why they decided to use the math for this job since my body block has been there and I wanted to punch the holes, my flux surface. Okay. When you're done doing so, check that all the holes often than bunch through and the sleeve is not ready to be stitched. In the next lesson. 4. Stitching the leather: To begin stitching together, the first thing to do is to decide on the threat to US. You can see in the video I have two different types of threats. On the left side are lion, threats of different colors. And on the right are black polyester thread. Which of these will have a huge impact on how your mother or we'll look at the end and you might find it useful to first make a small test by using a small piece of thread and putting it over your project to see it without direct convinces you or not. In this case, I'll go with the brown thread since even though I like how it looks with a blue thread, I think the brown, we'll give it a more elegant look, and we are other colors. This leave my just look too childish or very sporty, which is not something I would like to use in this piece. When you've decided on the thread, prepare your stitching needles. You'll need to for each stage you wish to do every time. For this project, I'm using to John James needles size double 02 cells touching meals. To begin with, you must first know how much ready for this project and so on. All these measure the total length of where you are going to stitch and multiply that number by four. This will be the length of the thread you'll need for the project. However, I always like to add 30 centimeters to this number to comfortably handle both deals. We're working with them. Measure, fret and cut it. Then if you're using land thread, you'll notice that it is really loosen kind of threat. You want to give more stiffness to it. To do so, you'll need to watch your thread with some beeswax. Pleasure thread 2 times over the walks and you'll see how it becomes wasted for them before. I always like to add more walks in the beginning and the end of the thread I'm using. Now we need to fix the needles to the trip. First phlegm, one of the edges of the thread. You can use any tool to do this, even your nails, as you can see, the important thing is that it is well flattened so you can insert the tip, the whole of the needle. Once this is done, POSIX threads for the whole the needle and stitch the thread with a pointed tip of the needle. You might want to flatten the point where you'll be doing this. When you've done this, start pulling the thread from the needle until you have a small amount of tourist left. And then pull the excess of thread backwards to look the thread would itself and the needle. Now I understand this might sound very confusing. First, which is why I suggest you look carefully at the video, since this step might be a little tricky if it's your first time doing it, a repeated process several times so you can see it. When you've done doing this on both side of the thread, we can start stitching the leather sleeve will start not from the first hole was made with from the second one. Then we'll stitch one hold back and then forwards the rest of the piece. This will give this leaf much more strength in that barn. Where is where most of the stress will be when bowling and stretching the leather to insert and take out the hair comb eventually. Instead of the first Niels for the second hole and pull both needles together to make sure you have the same length of thread on both sides. Then grab the first needle him pass it through the first hole, leaving the metal inserted in the liver with the needle on the other side of the hand. Pull the first needle and once it passes through the leather, let it go, but makes sure to have the second needle stiller hand. Now pass this needle through the same hole and pull both ends to tighten the threat in this first stitch. With this first stage, we have secured the threat from moving to a one hole to the other and alter its length. Now we can start moving forward doing exactly the same process. We look at the video carefully. It will be your best guide if you get stuck in this step. Once you've done this, repeat this step through the oldest stitching halls of this leaf. When you're almost done stitch on the sleeve, you might feel through our loosen again. This is because most of the wax has been lost from the thread during the tightening of the stitching holds. This is actually something good since it's trapped walks guarantees a thread is well fixed to this leaf. If you feel your thread very loose, you can always stop and add more walks through it as you can see in the video, and then continue all the way to the end. Once you've reached the end, you'll want to make sure this stage is very strong. So I suggest you go one stage. And then once you've done this Basel thread that is in front of this leaf, to the back. You'll see how this leaf looks pretty neat. And now it's time to go up the excess of thread left. To do so, you can use any type of scissors you want. Just make sure to pull the thread, tighten the last stretch before cutting. And when doing so, so I had to leave as little thread as possible so the excess won't be noticeable, as you can see in the video. 5. Finishing the edges: Now that we have finished each inner sleeve, the final step is to sun and polish all the edges so it has a nice soft finish. To begin with. You can use a 220 or 267 grid paper and carefully work your way in Coda, small piece of sandpaper, as you see in the video folder in half and start sanding the edge. Try to work in small sections and then cover more area as you begin working on it. If you wish, you can also use a dremel to do this. And that's really this tool. Make the work faster but just be careful to hold your peace firmly. Protect your eyes and nose from all the leather fibers that will go off to sleep. And also Troy to Sunday edge without applying too much pressure, only the necessary to leave the edge as smooth as possible. If you were with your dremel, you might find some excess of leather at the edges. Trim those excess fibres with the help of an edge February. This tool will help you smooth the edge and set it ready for polishing it. Dm, D edges with some water just enough to cover the entire edge and be careful not to drop any water to the main surfaces. Would you or wouldn't match burnisher? Burnish the edges just enough until you feel the edge smoke. Then you some burnishing gum and a piece of small canvas to burnish them in the same way as you previously did with the upper parts of the linear pieces. As an extra step to make sure your edges are, were burnished and as smooth as possible. You can once again use your wooden better shirt to republish them. At this point is live, is completely polished and should feel extremely smooth and shiny. When you've finished doing this, one lump step is to break the leather just a bit to allow the hair comb to fit comfortably. To do this, use a plastic bone folder and pass it several times. This step also helps them to get rid of any excess of glue that might be left inside is leaf. We have now finished our sleep and can proceed to the next and last lesson of this class. 6. Final project: We have reached the last lesson of our class where it's now your turn to create your own hair comes leaf. Remember you can give this leaf and you look you wish by combining different colors and threats, even textures and the leather pieces. If you wish to leave to look more formal, try making it and dark colors such as black, burgundy or dark brown leather. If you want something more casual and sport looking, you can go for a light tone brown leather like the one I used. You can download the template of this leaf in the project section and once you've finished, don't forget to upload it so other students can see it as well. Thank you so much for watching and I'll see you in the next class.
