1. Introduction: Hi everyone, welcome to the class. My name is David, and in this class I'll show you how to create your own handmade minimalists leather wallet. I'll show you which tools you need to make the wallet, how to blue hand stage and paint the edges. Once you've learned these techniques, you can apply them to any letter while you want. For this class. You don't need to have previous experience. I'll guide you from the beginning from knowing how to mark and cut the letter, how to stitch it, AND edges and assemble your project. May well, those are very easy and fun to make. And you can become very creative during the process. You'll see how simple decisions such as selecting a kind of leather and thread color can make your website look very different, even if you're working with the same design. At the end, the project for this class is to create your own handmade minimalist Wallet using the techniques we covered in the class. So let's get started.
2. Materials needed: The materials you'll need for this class are the following year, preferred kind of leather. For this project, I'll use the blue cow skin leather in one millimeter thickness. This letter has a firm field and a shiny finish leather for lining. I'm using blue gold letter in one millimeter as well. Combined with the Gulf skin, he will make a very striking contrast. A pair of scissors and X-Acto knife. A cutting mat, a cutting ruler, a scratch 0. Leather blue or cement edge paint. In this case, I'll use a dark blue edge paint. One edge brain applicator. A willing divider. To diamond shape source of your preference. I use one long six broad chisel and one small two branches or I poly block or mad when using the chisels. A leather pen. If you don't have one, the scratch awl will serve well. I polo mallet, linen thread. You can also use polyester thread or you prefer threads for hand stitching. In this case, I'll use a 0.8 millimeters thick line and thread. One block of beeswax, a pair of hands stitching needles, AC, chin pony, 327 grid paper. Finally, a plastic bone folder.
3. Cutting the Leather: Let's prepare our leather to start building our wallet. In a previous class, we design a simple pattern to create a handmade minimalist leather wallet. We will now use that pattern for this project. If you haven't built your parents yet, don't worry. All you need a tree pieces for building his wallet. You can build this pattern by hand or use the PDF in the class resources to print it. For this case, I printed the PDF and glued to a cardboard to make it slightly stiffer. The measurement of the parent pieces we will use for this project are one small piece of 105 times 55 millimeters. 1 million piece of 105 times 70 millimeters. One large piece of 105 times 155 millimeters. The first thing to do is to cut the leather pieces. There are several ways in which you can do this, such as current apparent directly with a pair of scissors or fixing it to the leather with some tape. And then car in the letter were an extractor knife. However, in this class, I'll show you my preferred way of doing this. What I usually do is either made a pattern in cardboard or cable paper. Or as you can see in this example, print the pattern in bond paper and then glue it to cardboard and mark with a scratch out all the edges of the world plays in the parent over the letter. This will help you identify where you must pass your knife to cut the leather and ensure very precise measurements in your leather pieces. If you don't have any cardboard, you can do it directly with the bond paper. Just make sure your leather and paper are as flat as possible over your work area. Once the marks are done with a ruler and a scratch, all mark a line from point-to-point to identify the edge lines of the design. Use your cutting ruler and an exact a knife to cut the leather pieces. Here's your main piece pattern to cut the lining as well. Declining leather should be cut slightly larger than the main piece. Now, we can proceed to create a wallet. In the next section.
4. Glueing and painting the edges: Let's begin to create our wallet. Once you have got all the pieces, I suggest you begin by gluing the lining to the main piece so you give enough time for the gluteal set and dry while you work in the other pieces. To this plays the main piece of the word on top of the lining with the inner parts facing each other with your leather pen, I recommend you draw a silhouette of the main piece in the lining so you know where exactly to place it once glue, flip the main piece and apply glue to the inner sides of both levers. Note that every glue may work differently, and in some cases it may not be necessary to apply on both letters. In this particular case it is necessary. So always check the instructions of use when you purchase your own glue. I also recommend you use some gloves if you were with a good directly with your fingers. If not, when it dries in your hand, it can become harder to remove. Carefully, join both letters and let them sit and dry for at least 10 minutes. Let's now paint the edges of the card slots. There are many different brands of Spain's. Some edge brains will dry faster than others. Some will give you a mate finish, while others will appear more shiny. At the end, the best way to know which brand of tools and supplies to use is to try them, compare them, and decide which one you feel more comfortable working with. In this case, I will use a mid finish hearable edge paint. I have found that this type of paint works better with Chrome tanned leather. It allows a pain to sit on the edges and cover all the fibers of the letter with an edge paint applicator. Carefully begin to apply the paint in all the edges of the slots that will be open. When you finish painting the edge of the slug, put it aside to let it dry. Once the first coat of paint is dry, apply a second code and let it dry as well.
5. Making the stitching holes: After a few minutes, all the edges should be dry. We can now begin to work on the surface of the slots. The first thing we should do is to mark where the stitching will go along the entire card slots for this user when divider and set the distance to four millimeters on the edge of the letter and carefully move to the edge so that you mark the leather at established distance. The next step is to punch this chin calls with our diamond. Will be used in straight lines across the entire wall. It does more. One will be used when we reach the edge of the leather and we need to mark the next hole. Or when we need to mark a single folder. Sometimes you might find that as you begin punching the holes, the last ones will need more space to fade at the same distance of the rest. And it may be the case that this distance is not present in the assignment. For this case is with your wireless. I suggest you first place the dime DVS over the leather to make it slightly and see if the holes will match well. If they don't, you can play a position in the chisel slightly further or closer to the last hole to compensate for the extra distance. And make this look more even. Once you know where the surgeon calls will go, blaze your leather over your mat, positioning your lungs, she sold vertically or the leather. And when you're boiling mallet, hit the chisel to punch the holes. You don't need to give a very strong hit. Just enough to make the chisels pass through the liver. If you don't use your mat, you will begin to damage the surface of your workbench. If this surface is strong, you will also damage the tips of your chisels. So make sure you have a mat in the hand when making those holes. Now let's do the front slots, the hidden slots, and prepare them as well. To do this position that France lot over the hidden slot first, make sure it's in the right position. Then mode the front slot slightly outwards and we do leather pen or scratch all. Make us light mark on the surface of the hiddens lot. You want to make this mark slightly inside this lot so it won't be visible when you place a phone slot, Position and stitch it. Now, it's time to join the two slots. First, put a small amount of along the edges of the hens lots, but only on the side where the frontal lobe will sit. For the same amount of blue and the edges of the fronts lots from the inner side. Plays the fronts log over the hiddens lot and leather pieces Lu well, for at least ten minutes. Both pieces have been joined. Proceed to mark the stitching line in the space left on the hymns love empathic chisels over the leather pieces. Again, we possess or several times because we want to ensure the holes and the backside come as straight as possible as we did with the front side of the liver. If we punch the holes with the letters altogether, it will penetrate them, yes, but it's possible that the exit holes and the back will be misaligned with the front ones. We will have to repeat this once all the pieces have been glued. This might seem to be tedious process to this several times, but it's really worth it to ensure a good quality of stitching on your lower pieces. Repeat the same assembly process for the other side of the wallet. Let's bring back our main piece with aligning to start working with it. First with a pair of scissors, cut the excess of lining there is between the lining and the main part. Tried to cut it as precisely as possible. Take your time and make sure you have good lighting when you're doing this. So you can clearly see where the edge is and avoid any possible shadows that might mislead us. Once finished load is love section for the main part. And let the entire wanted to do well for ten minutes. Section. Divider mark four millimeters from the edge to the inner part and proceed to make this more throughout the entire wallet.
6. Stitching the wallet: Now it's time to stitch the world. Until now, the blue has only helped us maintain the pieces in place and allow us to work with them. However, the glue by itself, one standard daily use of the wallet, only through stitching with the world resist the bending and stretches of everyday use. For this wallet will use a royal blue line and thread. The size of this trait will be using is approximately 0.8 millimeters. This type of thread will require some beeswax to handle it better. Do you know how much thread we will need? First, measure the entire perimeter of the wallet. Then multiply that number by four. And the result is the length of the tread needed to cover our wallet and handle the needles comfortably. I always like to add 30 centimeters just to make sure there's enough threat. Cut the thread to the required length. And we do block of beeswax bathroom at least three times all over the threat. Once finished, I suggest you pause the bees book several extra enzymes on both ends of the threat. These will help us set the needles much easier. To set the needles. First, flatten one end of the thread and a small distance ahead as well as you can see here. As a threat to the whole. And we end up with a needle and tried to stitch the thread to the flattened section you did next to the end. Now, just below the excess from the end all the way through the entire needle. And these will secure the thread that needle doing the entire stitching process. For this wallet, we will work with cells, the G cells, the gene is one of the strongest and most reliable stitches there is for leather working. The reason is, though with this kind of stitching, the thread is not compromised with itself. Meaning it always passes independently from one side to the other, was touching on the machines, the gym, where the thread is entangled in every stitching. To begin stitching as a thread through a hole at the edge of the wallet. Make sure you have exactly half the distance of the thread on one side and half on the other. To notice, simply pull the thread with the needles until the needles are both the same distance from the wallet. Now, does the right needle through the next hole of the wallet. With the needle still inside the wallet, plays the left needle in front of the right needle in a perpendicular precision. And in that position with your fingers, pull the right needle to the left side. Pool enough thread so you can grab some with your right hand and hold it through the front, as you can see here. Now, as the left needle through the same hole. And when it passes through the other side, pull some thread on the right to make sure you haven't stitched the threat itself. Now seemed really pull the needle and tightened that stitch. Repeat the process through the entire Well it here you can see how this bone is very useful when performing this method. It helps you maintain as much stage and lets you work faster as well. So even though you can perform this bony, I strongly recommend you use one for your other projects. When you get to the end of the wall, it simply stitch back once loved and got the excess of thread as close to the stitches as possible to hide the guts. Cell stage it gives every letter B's I beautiful appearance. Draft. This is regularly and use the gym will improve a null time. If your first digit didn't go out as expected, don't worry as any activity, hence, the G requires practice and time.
7. Finishing the wallet: The only thing left to do now is to finish the edges of the wallet. Before applying any paint, you want to make sure the surface is at the edge, is as flat as possible. You can use 320 sandwich paper to flatten it, as well as a monitor tool such as a dremel. I'm carefully sand all the way through it. Once the edges are flat, but can proceed to paint them. When our bandwidth, we will have to apply one initial call throughout in dire Betty measure of their wallet and wait until it is completely dry to apply the second coat. Once a second code is dry, you can send it just to make the surface as slightly more even and applied. The third and final code, aside to rest and I into dry. And final step is to use a plastic ball folder and take out any excess glue. Doesn't mind me press on the LinkedIn D edges of the car sluts, seemingly passive folder carefully through all the edges inside the slots. We have now finished our wallet.
8. Creating the second wallet: We have seen how to create a wallet with striking blue thread. Let's now go for a more realistic looking kind of wallet. For this case, we will consider several aspects to do so. Rustic looking wallets usually do not require too many steps to be made since they are more on the goal looking so to speak. And they tend to h over time developing their own patina and finishing the edges. Some wallets or even left on line. And that's fine since the backside of the letter would usually have a suit texture and it's a favorite for many people. In this example, you can see how easy and fast it is to create this wallet. We are using the exact same pattern, same tools, and same processes. And with the previous wallet. However, we're skipping two processes, mainly edge painting and lining. We can observe the wallet fast forward since we already know how to build one. And you can see how easy it is to build financial stake in it to get started. So now we're not talking about that one. As you can see, the contrast between them instead of sending the appearance, texture and color, even way and flexibility made them look as two very different products, even though they were both made using the exact same pattern and techniques. What this tells us at the end is that when you do the working, there are huge options for styles, materials, and finishes. They will have from words to choose. Any will all depend on what you want your product to communicate. The one-year wallets or any other product to be perceived as solver and classic, go for traditional colors such as black, brown or burgundy, and tried to use threads that match the color of your leather. The E1 products look more sport or vivid, makes light contrast such as using a classical color letter and a striking colors thread, or use different texture letters as well. At the end, it is always good to try different styles and see which one works better for you.
9. Final project: I hope you have enjoyed the class. It is time to make our final project. Use a template you have previously created in a template making glass and build your own leather wallet. If you haven't seen the previous class on how to build your own template, I strongly recommend you do. So. You can know which considerations to have when designing your wallet. You can also use a PDF file in the class to build your own wallet. A concern that template with the measurements and the pieces you saw in the video. When you finish your wallet, make sure to share in the project section. And if you have any doubts or comments, please do not hesitate to let me know. I'll be more than happy to help you. Thank you for watching this class and I'll see you in the next one.
