Transcripts
1. Intro: One of the greatest
ways that you can grow a YouTube channel is by
creating YouTube short. These are videos that
are one minute or less. They're vertical and they have a completely separate
location to be viewed, known as the shorts feed. To create a YouTube short, you can simply use your phone and then upload it
to YouTube app. But in this class we're actually taken it to the next level. We're actually going to be
used in a normal camera, which is what we're using right
now to record this class. When I can go into
take that through editing software, Premiere Pro, where we can add transitions and affects and make it more
visually appealing. Then we're going to upload it to YouTube using the
YouTube studio. This will make our
content better compared to those
that are simply just using their phones
and an upload it to the YouTube app with no transitions and
no special effects. In this class, we'll
be going through setting up your channel
planning, recording, editing with some basic
Premiere Pro tutorials, and then finally uploaded
in a short over on YouTube. You're interested in creating high-quality YouTube shorts and then stick around because we will be going
through everything.
2. Equipment: Before we do get into
creating YouTube shorts, we should go over some equipment that I'll be
using throughout this class. And you may also
need it yourself dependent on the content
that you're producing. The first thing that
you're going to need is something to record
with wherever it be a phone or you're going
to be used in a camera. For this class,
I'm actually using a camera which is plugged
into an Elgato Cam Link. And then I'm using OBS, which is entirely free software. That software allows me to
actually record footage. I will then also be using vidIQ. Vidiq is a keyword
research tool which I use to create and plan loads of
different YouTube videos. And as we're going over how
to create YouTube shorts, we also want to do a bit
of keyword research. You do not need
the paid version, but just as a disclaimer, I am using a paid version, but I will show you how to use the free version and
the paid version. So it doesn't really matter what version you have
because you will be covered. And finally, I'm also
using editing software. I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro. I have an Adobe subscription, but you could use the Vinci Resolve if you're looking
for a free version. I believe everything
that we're doing in this tutorial can be used
with Da Vinci Resolve. And this is pretty much
all the equipment that we will be using within this class.
3. Adding Shorts To Your YouTube Channel: To begin with, you first need to set up your channels so that it can actually present
shorts to your viewers. If not, well, it's entirely pointless and
there's nowhere in which viewers can actually
click on your profile and actually see shorts
on their phones. And this is very simple to do. You want to head over to
your YouTube channel and you do this by sign-in
and on top right, it will have your profile icon. You'll click that. They'll
bring a drop-down menu and you want to click
YouTube studio. This will take you to your
YouTube Studio Dashboard, and this will give you analytics
based on your channel. From here on that
left-hand side, you want to select
customization and this will take you to
a completely new area. And it will allow you to
customize your channel on that first tab and go
down to Featured section. And you're able to
see the plus sign, click that and a drop-down
menu will come down again. And you'll be able
to see YouTube short by clicking this
and adding this to your feature channel section, you're able to go and present YouTube shorts whenever
you upload something that she qualifies as a
YouTube short after a certain amount of
time because it doesn't get added to that immediately. But after a certain
amount of time, it will be put within this area. Whenever someone wants to
go and watch your content, I'll type in your
name within YouTube, go over to your profile. They'll see recent
uploaded videos, any type of other sections
that you have here, wherever it'd be, playlist, recent videos, most popular
videos, whatever it is, and then write a bottom
or wherever you place it, you'll have your
YouTube short section. And this is where they
can click and watch every single one of
your YouTube short. This isn't essential for you to actually get your videos
within the short feed, but it just makes things a lot clearer within your channel.
4. Keyword Research Using VidIQ: Now that that's done,
let's actually get into planning our YouTube shore. This is where we will actually
go and use vidIQ BET IQ is a keyword research
tool and all you need to do is link it to your
YouTube account. They'll give you
information based on your YouTube account over there. If you use the paid version, you can go and select
keywords and you can type in whatever idea you have. If you're interested in
creating a cook in short, you can put in cook in here, and I'll give you a list of
loads of different keywords or phrases in which
people are searching for. This is a great way for you to find out what people are
actually looking for. And it will even tell you the search volume as
well as the competition. You have struck gold if you have extremely high search volume, but very low competition. This means that there's
a lot more people searching for that topic, but that isn't enough people
creating content around it. So if you have got vidIQ and you are using
a paid version, you can very easily just type in whatever topic you're
channel is about. Vidiq will give you a list
of loads of different ideas which you can base videos
or even short around. If you're using a free version, unfortunately, you
cannot do this. You cannot use this keyword tab because the secondary
type in any key words, it will be limited. Everything is locked
behind a paywall. This is perfectly fine
because we can still use vidIQ with the vidIQ
Chrome extension. You can now head
over to YouTube. And within the YouTube search, you can type in
whatever you want. If your channel
is about cooking, you can type in cooking and
press Enter and you'll be presented with relevant content just like you would normally. There'll be loads of different
videos which relates to cook in with that vidIQ
Chrome extension. And they'll also be apart now, right-hand side of YouTube, which actually gives you
a bit more information. It gives you information such as the search volume as well as the competition around
that search term, which this case is cooking. It's exactly the same as
the vidIQ paid version, but the only difference now is that you need to
actually type in different keywords as well as phrases within YouTube search manually for you to actually find the search volume
and the competition. This is how you can either use the paid version or
the free version. Now actually taken us into the
example for today's class, I wanted to create a
YouTube short around, creates an a class
on Skillshare. Within the paid version, I would type in Skillshare
and it'll give me a list of loads of
different keyword ideas. It will say Skillshare,
skillshare class, Skillshare course, how to
create a Skillshare class, how to create a
Skillshare course. And I'll keep on going
down with each one, even though it involves
the world of Skillshare, each one has a
different search volume and each one has a
different competition. If I was using a free
version of it ICU, I would head over to YouTube
and type in Skillshare, press Enter, note down the search volume as
well as the competition. I will manually go through how to create
a Skillshare class, how to create a
Skillshare course and note down for each one, nice search, the competition, as well as the search volume. At the end, you get the
exact same results of their being loads of different
keywords that you can use. And we will be using
them for our tanks, our title and our description. At the end of the
day, you will have keywords which can be
used for your tags, title, and your description. It's just a different process in how you get those keywords. This is all purely because
of how vid IQ is setup and its subscription model with the keywords
that you do get, you just want to make
sure you keep them safe. I normally put them within a Google Docs and I normally
come up with an idea for a title as well as write out a description which includes
all of those key words. These will be used later.
5. Planning YouTube Shorts: Now that you've done
your keyword research is actually time to take that topic and actually
present it in a way which will be entertaining
for a YouTube shore. Now with this, you
don't need to go too far in depth
because remember, it is only a maximum
of one minute. Youtube even tells
us that they would prefer it to be shorter
rather than longer. This is the part
in which you take some time to actually plan and figure out what
you're going to say and when you're
going to say it, if you're going over a
tutorial of how to do something within
a game or how to do saint within gardening. And this is where
you'll write out step-by-step how to do
that thing if you see yourself as a
comedian and this is the point in which you write
and script your jokes, the process itself and
doesn't need to be long because it
isn't a long video, but it is a good idea
to have a plan in place so that you know exactly
what you're going to say. You're going to hit
those points and you're going to make sure
that it doesn't go over that one-minute mark
because the second it does in no longer counts
as a YouTube shore. So take some time to
actually plan and figure out what you're going to say
when you're going to say it, and how long the
video is going to be.
6. Recording YouTube Shorts: If your YouTube short now
plant is actually time to get things recorded I've used in your phone
or your camera. This is where you
record whatever it is that you've planned
and put together. In the introduction,
I said that I record using a camera which goes
into an Elgato gambling and I use OBS on my other
monitor to actually record everything that you're
seeing right now where she doing it for this class. If you're doing the
exact same thing, you're probably wondering of
how you're going to record. Remember YouTube
shorts are vertical, they're supposed
to be on a phone. So you can scroll up or
down to go and watch or see the previous shore
or the next shore. Things currently stand.
This is a 16 by nine. That's perfectly
fine because we can change this later once
we get to the edit. This is just a point in which you record everything that you planned and put together and now you actually
get things done. It may take a couple of tags. Whenever I record anything, I always seem to start
mess up my words, so I end up having
to re-record it. This is also perfectly
fine because we can cut it down later once
we do get into the edit. Biggest thing here is just to make sure that your
audio is good, your quality is good, and that you're
saying the things that you're wanting to say.
7. Basic Editing In Premiere Pro - Part 1: This is now a part in which
we've now planned and we've recorded our YouTube short and we actually
get into editing. This is gonna be the
biggest bulk of this class. We will go over how we can
bring this voyage and make it within a vertical
format so that it can be uploaded as a YouTube shore. But then we're also going
to look on how we can add new types of
fluid, break it down, and also add captions
where it'll be even more enjoyable and readable for you to actually go
through as a viewer, this is where you'll create a new project within
Premiere Pro, you can call it whatever you
want and you can save it within any location
on your PC or laptop. With the blank timeline, you will drag and drop the
footage that you've just recorded because you have
dragged and dropped in fluid, which is likely 1920 by 1080, it will copy whatever the format that video is as your sequence. You drag it in as 1920 by 1080
with 60 frames per second. It will be exactly that. Once you drag and drop
it into Premiere Pro, this will do for now,
but we will change it to be that vertical
format a bit later. The first thing that
you want to do is actually cut out any
of the empty spaces or any of the times that you
messed up so that you only have the good
recorded footage. You do this quite simply by going and using the razor tool, you can click the icon which
is next to the timeline, or you can press C
If you don't want to use the razor tool because
you like using hotkeys. You can press Control K, which will cut
footage wherever that Blue Market is on your timeline. You just want to get rid of all the footage
where you mess up, you start up, or it's just empty silence where
you don't say anything. This is all wasted space. Remember you do only
have one minute, so cut this down to be
as quickly as possible, as sharp as possible so you
get straight to the point. Once you're done,
you should be left with footage, which makes sense. We play all in order and
you've got your video there. This is where we
actually changed the video to be vertical. And it's really
isn't too difficult. You want to head up to
sequence at the top, and there you'll be able to
click sequence settings. You can change the frame size. It will start out
to be 1920 by 1080. And to change it to be vertical, you just need to
switch these around. They need to be 1080 by 1920. When you do this, you'll notice going back to your sequence that now the footage isn't size
to your actual video. You just need to go through
your recorded footage and you need to increase
the size, increases. You get rid of those black bars on the top and the bottom. Realistically, if you wanted to, you could actually export what we currently have an
uploaded to YouTube and YouTube world-class it as a YouTube shore, it's vertical. It should be high-quality and it should be less than
one minute long. This is pretty much all we need, but this is where we actually
take it to the next step, where we make it look
slightly better.
8. Basic Editing In Premiere Pro - Part 2: One of the easiest ways
in which you can improve your edit is to break it down
into different sections, and they have different footage for each of those sections. That way it becomes
visually stimulating as it chops and changes between
different types of footage. Now as an example, a short that I created
for this class was how to create a
Skillshare costs. I broke it down into
six different steps. With each step that I
wanted to talk about. The second that I say step one, there was text above my
head which said step one, and it went from right to left. And to do this,
It's very simple. You will first select the
Type tool which you can find the left-hand side right
beside it, a timeline. Then you'll go up
to the main scene and you click anywhere that will allow you to type whatever it is you want to type. The sake of this video
I typed in step one. This will also add a text layer within your timeline
at the bottom. Now with your text
layer selected in the timeline on
the left-hand side, you can see a new
section cortex. This is where you can change text properties such as font, size, alignment,
position, appearance, and so much more. I wanted the text
to be a bold font, which was aligned to
the center and for it to be above the top of my head, I also wanted it to
have a drop shadow. Now unfortunately,
a drop shadow isn't actually part of these
properties within the text, which he have to add a
completely new effect for this. It's also very simple. Let's hop of Premiere Pro. You'll have an Effects tab, you'll click that
and until a right, it will also open up
another Effects tab. In the Effects tab you
have a search bar and there you're going to
type in drop-shadow. Click and drag and drop
shadow onto the text layer. This will add a new section
to text called Drop Shadow. This will just add more depth. It won't look like his text
on top of a 2D surface. It will actually look like
it's slightly in front. It provides a shadow
on the footage behind. You can adjust the drop
shadow settings however you want or you can
just copy mine. I wouldn't mind to
look like it was just slightly above the
footage and not too far away as well as
it's still also not looking like there was any
difference whatsoever. I wanted that perfect
middle ground. Once you're happy
with the text is time to actually get them
moving because there's things currently stand
and just cut straight to that text popping up
right above my head. Whereas I wanted
to transition from the right-hand side
all the way to the middle for it to
stay there for a bit. And then as soon as it's done, for it to move off to
the left to do this, It's also very easy. You'll go back over to
your effects to have where you've typed in
drop-shadow previous. Now you're going
to type in push. Push is actually a transition. So unlike the drop
shadow where we can just drag and drop
it onto our layer, we can only drag this
as a transition at the beginning or at
the end of a clip. So to begin with
drag and drop it all the way to the
beginning of this clip. And then you'll
be able to change a few settings on the top-left, very similar to what we've
been able to do with the text and also
the drop shadow. Normally with this,
I already changed to settings and this
being the duration, as well as I'll click the arrows for how I want this transition to come in with a b from left
to right or right to left. You'll also need to drag
and drop the pushing yet again all the way to
the end of that clip. So you have a
transition coming in as well as you also have
an exit transition. There it is. Now I have text above my head which slides
in from right to left, stops in the middle
just for a few seconds, whilst it's easy for
the viewer to read. And as soon as it's done,
it will slide out to the left with that
push animation again. Now if you remembered
from earlier, I said that I have at six
different steps and I was wanting to go
and do this for every single one of those steps. I could individually do it for each and
every one of them. Or I could just make
life incredibly easy and copy the one I already have for step one and just change the text to say Step two. It saves me from having to do all of these drop
shadow effects, change the text and also apply this transition beginning and the end to actually copy this, you can just copy and paste, which is Control C and then Control V whilst that
layer is selected. Or what I do, I just hold Alt
and then click it and then drag it to the
location I want it to be. I want to let go of my mouse
button, let go of Alt. And there we go. We have two separate
copies of the same thing. I went unused the
type tool to change the layer in where
it says step one, I'll change it to be
step two, step three, step four, step five, and also step six.
9. Adding More Footage To YouTube Shorts: Now we have our
YouTube short within different sections
with a beam from step one all the
way up to step six. It doesn't make sense
me to have me just sat there talking about it
is actually very boring. So we're going to mix
this up a bit by having different recorded footage which I managed to get earlier. And I'm just going to
bring it in and change each section to recorded footage that it makes sense to have. So for example, within step one, I told him to head
over to skillshare.com slash teach and actually
creates your first-class. So I'm going to show exactly
that makes no sense. Meter show something completely different of me
recording my class because that's not
the step that I'm trying to go through
in step one. Step one is the basics of just going over to Skillshare
and learning how to create and setup a new
draft to create a new class. If you're going to be
doing tutorial content, this is important. You want the visuals
to match the audio. Now when it actually comes
to recording more footage, unfortunately, I just can't
help you within this area. You can use OBS and set it
up to record your window. And it will allow you to
record your screen while Shu actually go through whatever it is you're
going through. That's exactly what I did while I was recording
all of this. If footage. If you're creating a YouTube
short round cookies and you're going through
a certain recipe of how to bake a cake, then maybe you should actually
record yourself baking a cake and then
you break it down later into different
types of steps. And you have that recorded
footage to link back to. If you're doing
something generic, you could also use Pexels. Hexose is a site where
you can actually download royalty-free footage
and you can actually use it and stock
footage within YouTube, short, or even different
types of videos. Now for the sake of this class, I didn't use Pexels by
have used it within other short previous to this and probably well within the future, it's always a good go-to
because it's also royalty-free. You can actually earn money
was using that footage. This does make this
process slightly more harder than it does
take a bit more time. But trust me, when
I say it's warfare, this does make this
process slightly longer. It's going to take
even more time as you record more footage. But a more footage you have, the better you can
make your short. You can have a car every couple of seconds
and this will boost your audience retention
as there's always something happening
within your video. If you've got a way in
which you could get more footage to make your
video more entertaining. Definitely do it.
10. Adding Captions In Premiere Pro: And the last thing
that I like doing with my shorts is actually
adding captions. Now YouTube does
provide captions within YouTube videos and they do it within YouTube
shorts by default, it's automatic the
second you upload, but they're really
not that appealing. We can make things look a lot better and we can do
this very easily. And the top within Premiere Pro, you will see a tab called
captions and graphics. Click that and you'll
view will change. The first thing you need to do is click Transcribe Sequence, and this will bring up another
tab and you don't need to change any of the sentence
here, just click transcribe. This may take a couple
minutes while as Premier Pro goes through what you said within
that whole footage, and then she starts to write
down a script word for word. This is only available within the later versions
of Premiere Pro. If you have something
a lot earlier, you either need to update to get this option or you
just can't do it. Once this is done, the
script can be seen on the left is worth
just playing through the video a few times
to make sure what you say in a video lines up
to what's in the script. 99% of what is said is correct, but there's normally a
few spelling mistakes, wrong grammar, or doesn't capitalize the first
letter of a name. Stuff like that really
is important if you're going to put that as
captions within your video. If you're happy with
the script is times you add these on
top of your video. Click the button that
says create captions. This will open up
a new tab again, and I only change 1 second. This is lines from it being double and I set
it to be single. And then I finally
click Create yet again, this will take a couple minutes, but let's just using
that script and breaking it down on
top of each parts of your video so that the correct thing will pop up for a limited amount of time. Whilst you say that line was, you say exactly
what is popping up. As soon as it's done, it will
move on to the next one. This is pretty cool to
do and it only takes a couple minutes as Premier Pro does all
the work for you. Unfortunately, it
doesn't look too good, is actually no better than the random captions that
YouTube will add to your video. But that's fine because
this is also very easy to edit the top and you will go and select one of
these captions. It doesn't matter
which one you select. You just need to
focus on one for now. The second that you click
on it and it's highlighted, you'll have a right section
on the side of Premiere Pro, which will allow you to change the properties very
similar to what we had with the text
earlier when we added the steps above my head, it's worth going through this. I'm making a text look
the way that you want. I like having white tags
with a red border around it. It makes it just look very YouTube if that's
actually a word. In fact, it's definitely not a word, but you get what I mean, that red and white written
like that and it stands out, it's easy to read, and it just works really well
with my videos. So does the style that I go for, but the style that you go
for is entirely up to you. It's warfare. Just
plan about with it. Once you're done,
you don't have to go through each
of these captions individually to do the exact same settings
yourself manually. You can actually save it. And how you save it is by
going up to the track style, using the drop-down and select Create style and you rename
it to whatever you want. This will take all
the settings and all the properties that
you've just made for your caption and put them
in a safe style that can be used for all the other
parts within that video, you'll press Okay, and it will automatically do
everything for you. Now, you have captions over your videos which
goes one for word of what you're saying
isn't a style that you want and you no longer
need to use it. Youtube captions because
it's all right there. Plus it's another thing
that is always changing. It makes the production
value looks so much high if your video than
what it actually is, it will always be something for the viewer to be looking at, whether it be the
texts constantly changing as you read through and actually go through the
tutorial or whatever it is you have planned for
that YouTube short, as well as you also have other
pop-ups with texts common above the head or a change
within recorded footage. There's so much going on all at the exact same time
that it just makes your YouTube short
so much better and boost that
audience retention. We've all of that done
our time to actually exploit and get it
up over on YouTube.
11. Premiere Pro Exporting: When export in, you can go File and then go all
the way down to export. Or with a timeline selected, you can press Control M, which is the hotkey to bring up the export tab, Export in. I don't really change too much
or go and set it to H.264. And then I'll put it
too high bit rate with YouTube videos
which are in ten ATP, I do go through some
other settings, but for YouTube shorts, I really don't change too much. I keep everything by default with that high
bit rate setting, rest will just match the source, which means it
will copy whatever is already within your sequence. So with that being that vertical layout
of a 1080 by 1920, it will just copy that
from the sequence so I don't need to
change anything. You only thing to do is
to rename the file and actually save it
in a location that you know where it's going to be. So that once we actually
go up to later, once we actually
upload it to YouTube, you can just go straight to the file destination and
drag and drop it over. Once that's all done,
you click export. And because it's
a YouTube short, you really don't
have anything too long in length or it
being recorded footage, it's probably only going
to take a couple minutes, if not, maybe just a
couple of seconds.
12. Uploading To YouTube: Now is the time in which we take that export video and we
upload it over to YouTube. It is warfare, watching
through just to make sure that what you've exported is actually all they're
within a video. Sometimes Premiere Pro does mess up and maybe a corrupt the file, or even in some cases, it just doesn't actually
burn the captions to what you actually
have with your footage, which just makes sure that
it's all there and it's exactly the same as what you
have within the sequence. But as soon as that is done, it is actually time to actually
upload over on YouTube. It's again because it
is a very small file. When you upload it, it's probably only going to
take a couple of seconds, if not a couple of minutes. I'm new to actually
get that uploaded and processed on YouTube
or starts happening. It's worth going back to the research that
we did earlier. Remember writes
in the beginning, I told you to do some
keyword research where you can get keywords which can
be used for your tags, your title and description. If you wrote out your tags,
title and description, now is time to actually copy and paste it within each
of these sections. If you didn't actually write out a title description and those
tags like a recommended, and this is where you actually
need to go back and get those tags by overdoing the
keyword research again. And then you need to
use those keywords or some of those keywords
within that title. And then try and use as
many keywords as possible within that description
as you write it out. Unlike a normal YouTube video, there's no real point
for you to anti add any cards or an end screen. There just isn't any time. Not to mention that
once these videos get puts within the
YouTube shorts feed, he doesn't even show up, so it makes no
difference whatsoever. My YouTube settings, I also
go all the way down to the bottom and turn off where
ADG notifies subscribers. Now I understand for lots of
people with their videos, they want to notify
their subscribers, and I do with my normal videos, but with YouTube shorts, I'm posting them
on a daily basis. I don't want them to and I don't want them to go
out to subscribers because the YouTube shorts are just shorter versions of my
longer length and videos. I want my subscribers to
watch those longer videos, but I want my shorts to reach a bigger audience as YouTube pushes it within
the shorts feed, this is optional, It's entirely up to you and the
layout of your channel. Personally, I find it
annoying when I subscribe to a content creator for
a specific type of video. And I just get bombarded with notifications about
their YouTube short. I just do not want
to deal with it. This is the reason I do it, but your reasoning may
be entirely different. Maybe you want your
subscribers to watch the long run videos
and you have something completely different with
your short-form content, your YouTube shorts. If that is, you can
keep this section takes for it to
notify subscribers you overthink worth talking
about is whether or not you should be adding a thumbnail
to your YouTube shorts. Now for me, I'm going
to be transparent. I don't I don't add a thumbnail and it goes back to the
reason that we just said, the whole purpose of my
YouTube short is not to actually get the subscribers
to click on that video. I actually wanted to reach a completely new audience by going through the shorts feed. And the shorts feed, it
doesn't even need a thumbnail. You only reason that
you're going to want a phone now is because you want to notify
subscribers and you want them to actually
click on that video, a farm that will
definitely help. Plus also, you must
remember that the YouTube short isn't just a video that
goes into the short feed, actually goes up
within YouTube search. So if you are looking to bring in an audience from
YouTube search, then it's probably best for
you to also have a thumbnail. This is just something
worth thinking about. Yes, again, for me
because I just want to get within those
YouTube shorts feed. I don't bother with a thumbnail because I've got other videos that are ranking within YouTube search and other videos which are
there for subscribers. Once all of that done, your YouTube short is
now ready to go live. Just like any other video, you can go into
your video settings and instead of it being
private or unlisted, you can now make it public. Click that, Save it,
and there you go. It is now out there. The goal for YouTube short is to get within the
YouTube short feed. But unfortunately, just because you've created a YouTube short doesn't guarantee that
you're going to get within the feed
for law of people. They've said that
it can take hours, it could take days,
it could take weeks. It can take mumps. And for some, it never happens, is all about YouTube's
algorithm selecting your content and actually
putting out within that feed. If you afford enough to
actually get into that feed, you can expect some
pretty good results. It's not unheard of you to have a YouTube short where
it's not performing too well because
it hasn't reached the short feed and it's just getting a few views
here and there. And then all of a sudden out of nowhere been thousands of views, tens of thousands of views, just like that in a
couple of seconds. And then it gets
taken out of the feed again and it gets nothing again. You end up looking back into your analytics and
it just goes across, shoots up and then
goes across again. It's pretty weird to go and see, but it's also very effective. It is in those couple of seconds whilst being
part of the feed, your able to get
thousands of views. Plus on top of that, there will be people that will subscribe for your content. This is the whole
reason of why you want to be pushing
valuable, good, entertaining YouTube
short, because as soon as YouTube does take your content and put
it within the feed, It is an amazing feeling.
