1. Welcome to the class: Hello everyone,
welcome to this class. I hope you're all
having a great day. My name is David and in this class I'm going
to show you how you can make this moon
painting out of another piece. This project is fast, easy, and fun to make. And you don't need to have any previous experience
on letter crafting. For this project, you'll need some vegetable tanned leather. I run object that will be
the diameter of your moon. A pencil and exacto knife, some acrylic paints, a brush, and as an optional
but helpful material, timecode sealer, as well as a small piece
of cotton cloth. The project for this
class is for you to make your own little moon using the techniques you'll
see in these lessons. So I hope you have fun with it and without any further ado, let's begin our project and prepare or leather
in the next lesson. See you there.
2. Preparing the leather: Great. So to begin our project, we're going to need some
vegetable tanned leather. I'll be using a four
millimeter thick piece that I have from
previous projects. You can use any thickness you wish really and can easily get one small piece of two or
three millimeters on eBay. Just make sure it's
vegetable tanned leather. You do need to work with
this type of others since other letters like Chrome tan one work well with
the acrylic paints. So to begin with, I'll seal the back part of the
leather with some timecode. Since the backside
of the leather is full of loose fibers, this healer will
make the surface smooth and protected
from any moisture. This step is optional since the backside of the
project won't be seen. However, it does feel good to have that other
sealed and protected. Use a small piece of
cotton cloth to simply apply it and spread the
liquid over the surface. Always make sure you're applying the tank goes on the backside of the letters since
the acrylic paint won't work over it. When you're done, let the code dry for around 15 minutes and then use a sick or object to draw the diameter
of the moon. In this case, I'll be using a protractor and a
pencil and simply plays a protector over the
leather and trace the outline with the pencil
until it's fairly visible. It doesn't need to
be very visible since we're going to
repeat this step later on. Just enough for you to have an idea of where
the paint will go. Then finally, with your pencil, trace some large spots where the darker areas
of the moon are. In this case, I've traced five large areas and are mostly on the upper
part of the liver. When you're done, we can start painting our moon
in the next lesson.
3. Painting the base color: For this project, I'll be using this Angelo's acrylic
leather panes. These are great paints
to work with leather. If you're looking to
make some project with strong color tones, I'll be using gray, dark gray bone and dark
bone color paints, as well as white
acrylic paint later on. For now, let's begin with
the dark gray color. Mix your paint well,
before using it. When you open the paint, you'll notice it has a small
brush in the cap. This is actually a
great feature and a very useful one as
well for your project. Grab enough paint
to start painting inside the areas
you just marked. These are going to be the
darkest areas of the moon. When you're finished,
leave them on to rest for around 20 minutes
until the paint is dry and then we'll
continue to add the rest of the base
color in the next lesson.
4. Painting the intermediate color: So when the dark
gray paint is dry, you can start
painting the rest of the base color which
are dark bone pain. For this unit, apply more paint since it's
a larger surface, but the process is
exactly the same. Now when you reach the
edge of the circle, you can make some small
strokes with a brush just to see where the
line of the pencil is. Similarly on the edge
of the darker paint. You can press your brush
so that the hair is open and then push the
paint to the side. As you can see, this will make the band in-between
look more realistic. Make sure to cover all
the surface with paint. If there's a spot in
the dark section on the moon and you wish
to paint it later. Go ahead. Don't worry too
much of how it's going to look since later on we'll add even more details
with other colors. When you're done,
leave your piece to drive for another 15 minutes, and then we can continue to add the details on the surface.
5. Painting the details: Now that the base colors
of your moon or dry, we can begin adding some
details to the surface. We can start with
a bone color paint to make some greater effects. First, with the brush of the bone color paints, you can make a large stain like the one you are
seeing the video. This is going to be
the largest stain. And to make the
effect of the crater, we need to expand the colors for the surface near the stain
in a circular pattern, almost like following the
circumference of the moon. So you can use your
brush and make long curved strokes
to make this effect. Start inside the large stains adjusted and move your
weights for other sites. Play with different lengths and pressures so the strokes
look more natural. You can turn them on at
your will if you wish. Repeat the process in
other areas of the moon. In this case, I'll be doing another large stain on the
upper side of the circle. We're a small strokes in the right side and the
larger one on the left. Then I'll continue to add more stains and
stroke on the size. And the larger one near
the center as well. When you are happy
with them, you can add some random small things
over the surface. They don't need to
highlight a lot just enough to make some contrast
with the base colors. Then we can continue with
the gray color paint. However, this time,
I'll be using a large brush to make some splatter effect
in the surface. I suggest you grab some paint with your brush
and in a piece of leather or the edge of your vegetable tanned
leather aside your painting. Tab your brush until
you get a drip effect. You want to have
as little pain as possible in the brush for this. So you're painting doesn't look overloaded with gray
paint with this detail. When you are happy
with that, tap your brush throughout
the entire circle, again in a random manner. You can do this with your Grey
bone and dark gray paint. The ADA is to give
the effects of the smaller craters that are
on the surface of the moon. Finally, you'll say white
acrylic paint as well. To repeat this process. This time, however,
tried to be more subtle. And if you feel
there's a space that needs some of these effects
were another paint. Feel free to repeat the
process once again. When you're done, again, leave your moon to rest
for around 15 minutes. And we can then proceed
to cut out the circle.
6. Cutting out the moon and finishing the side: One of the plaintiff
that either is dry, we can proceed to
occur at the Moon. However, since we've painted
all over the surface, the line that we previously drawn may not be
visible anymore. If this happens, you
can once again draw the circle using your circle
or object and your pencil. This time, make sure the line is a well-marked and visible. To go to the moon, use
your exacto knife and carefully follow the line
you drew with your pencil. When you're doing this, go slow. Don't rush and don't
apply too much pressure. When you pass your knife, the leather will start cutting
itself little by little. You might need to
pass your knives on three or four times to separate the circle from
the rest of the letter, but don't try to make
it in one single pass. If you tried to make
it in one pass, you will end up using
too much pressure and this can be
dangerous for you. Also notice how my left hand is right at the very
sight of the leather. Never plays your hand or
fingers right in front of her. The knife will pass. Remember that everyone is responsible for
its own security. So please be aware of
when using these tools. You can make some cutting
entrances, so to speak, if you wish to start
separating the pieces, this will make the P is more manageable when the
leather becomes loose. And there it is. The moon is now cut out. Now the only thing
left to do is to finish the entire
edge of the circle. And to do this, you can use a 227 grid paper and start taking out those
excess of fibers. When you're finished something, you might notice the
edge of the moon to be slightly more
sharpened done before. There is this tool which
is an edge Babylon. And what it does is
that it takes out all the sharp edge by just gently passing
it through the edge. You can get yourself
one of these tools you wish or are planning to work
with leather quite often. However, if not, you can use the same sound
grid paper and start removing the edge by sending it in a diagonal manner,
as you can see. When you're done, the
last step is to paint the edge with one of the
panes you've already used. In this case, I'll use
the dark gray color. You can always make a test on a smaller
section of the circle and see if you like that color
of not for this project, I like how it looks
with the dark gray and we'll finish the entire
side with this color. In the next and final lesson, we'll see how the moon ended up looking and discuss
the final project.
7. Final project: Great, So this is how the
moon looks at the end. In this class,
you've learned how to make this fun and fast project and it's now time for
you to make your own moon. Get yourself some vegetable
tanned leather and some acrylic leather panes
to start your project. Then when you're finished, don't forget to upload it so other students can
see it as well. Thank you so much for
watching this class. I hope you have enjoyed
it and I'll see you in the next one.
Have a great day.
