1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Yeah Hi, friends. How are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project. I will guide students step by step through all the steps that they need to take. Today, we are going to be creating this fun and festive design that includes Macas and some flags and some different shapes and lines. I hope that you have a lot of fun with this project. Let's get started. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a paintbrush. You will need a cup or bowl with clean water and a paper towel and a set of oil pastels or crayons. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials, and I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw Festive Maracas: I in this step, we are going to draw our design. So let's get started. So go ahead and pick up your black oil pastel or crayon and go to the middle of your sheet of paper. This is where we're going to create the main part of our maracas. We're going to have two Macas, one here, and then one here. And then the handles are going to come down here at the bottom. They may or may not cross over each other, depending on which way you want your maracas to turn. Okay? So I'm going to make two fairly large ovals. So there's one. And then I'm going to make another one about right here. They don't have to be perfect. They might be one might be a little bit bigger than the other. One might be a little bit differently shaped. Now, down here at the bottom, we're going to create a little shape that looks like this. And then same on this side. Now we're going to make some handles coming out from these shapes right here. You can make them as long as you'd like. It's like a really long letter U. Alright? I'm going to do the same on this one. And oh, I need to jump over. Let's see. Make sure that I get that straight, crossover, and then come back up. Like I said, yours may or may not cross over each other. Alright, now we have our maracas. Let's make some flags up here towards the top. So we're going to make a curve line coming from point to point. So come down and then come back up. And then you can make some flags here. You can make semicircle flags. You can make triangle shaped flags. You can make squares or rectangles. It's up to you. I think I'm going to start with a triangle, and maybe I'll start right here, come down, and then come back up, and then I'm going to attach more triangles and go all the way to the edge of my piece of paper, and I might go off my piece of paper, and that's okay. So I'm going to come down, go back up and then come down. There we go. Alright, now what we're going to do is we're going to put some small shapes inside of our flags. I think I'm just going to make shapes that look like this. It's almost like a teardrop shape. And then I think I'm going to make a circle here. There we go. Maybe you only even make one here. And over here, maybe. Maybe part of a shape right here. Alright. Now what you can do is you can put your black oil pastel or crayon away, and you can start decorating your design with different colors. Alright? So let's start by decorating our Macas, and let's put some different patterns in there. You can use any colors that you like and make any type of pattern. Pattern is something that repeats itself. So I think I'll start with that and then maybe I'll add some dots and just go ahead and create some really fun and festive lines and shapes on your Mracas Alrighty friends, I'm finished adding some patterns to my Macas. And now what I'm going to do is I'm going to add some designs into the background. So the background is this space right here, anything that is behind the Macas and the flags. So I'm going to make some different shapes, maybe like some triangles, maybe some circles, maybe some different types of lines. And I'm just going to scatter the shapes and lines on my piece of paper. M. Alright, friends, take a moment to look at your artwork to see if there's anything else that you'd like to add. Think about this. Is there anything else that you'd like to add to the flags or the background or to the Macas? It's completely up to you because this is your artwork, so you get to do what you like with it. Alright? In the next step, we are going to come back and we are going to start painting our design. 3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we are going to start painting our design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add one or two drops of water into each of our pans of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up our paint a little bit so that it is easier for us to use. I really do encourage my students to take that step because it does help. Now that our paints are softening up, let's turn our attention to our design. So in this step, what we're going to focus on painting are the Macas and the flags and any shapes that you need to fill in on the background, for example, we have a shape here that needs to be filled in, right here, right here. So we're going to focus on those three things. We're going to focus on painting in the Macas, the flags, and the shapes. In the next step, we're going to come back and we're going to paint all of these spaces all around the shapes and the Macas and the flags. Okay. So let's get started. I'm going to start with my Macas, and I'm going to just paint them all kinds of different bright and cheerful colors, okay? I want this painting to be really bright and colorful. Down here, I'm going to pretend like these are made out of wood. These handles are made out of wood. So I'm going to paint these a really light brown. And then I'm not sure about my flags yet. I might color those different colors. In your mind, think about the color or colors that you would like to use for your background. That might help with your decision making on the colors that you'd like to use for your Mracas. I think I might use a really bright orange, maybe a pink, but I'm thinking more orange. Okay. So I'm going to start by putting a little bit of water into one of my wells, and I'm going to add just a very small amount of brown paint because I want to paint my handles a really, really light brown because I am pretending that these are made out of wood. So I want the wood to be fairly light. Here we go. Alright. So now I'm just going to start at the top of each of my maracas, and I'm just going to start painting nice and bright colors. I should say, as I'm painting, your colors might run into each other and mix and blend a little bit, and that's okay. That's what watercolor paints love to do. They love to run around and mix together. That's just the nature of the watercolor paints. So on this project, I do encourage that to happen if it's going to happen. Don't worry about them mixing together. For example, right here, my yellow went into my green, and that's okay. That's okay with me. Alrighty friends, as you can see, my colors are mixing and spreading around right here, and I really like the way that that looks. If you do not want your colors to travel around, what you can do is you can take your handy dandy paper towel, hover over the area that's spreading around, and lightly touch it with your paper towel, touch your hand down on your piece of paper. And what that will do is that paper towel will absorb some of the paint, so it stops spreading. But I like the look, so I'm going to leave it. Alright, I'm going to start painting my flags now, and then after I paint my flags, I'm going to go ahead and start painting these shapes. And Alrighty friends, I'm finished painting the Macas, the flags and the shapes on the background. I did not paint these faces right here on the flags because I'm going to pretend that those are holes, and I'm going to paint those orange along with the background because I want it to look like the flags, have those cut out holes in them, so you can see the background through them. In the next step, we are going to paint the background, so I will see you in the next video. 4. Step 3: Paint the Background: In this step, we are going to paint the background. So let's get started. Alrighty. I've already decided that I'd like to paint my background orange, but you can choose any color that you like. I'm going to make some orange paint on my palette. So I'm going to put some water into one of my wells because I'm going to need quite a bit of orange paint because I'm going to be painting a big space. I'm going to be painting all of these white spaces. Alright, so let me add some orange paint. Remember if you like a lighter shade of any color, you add more water. And if you like a darker, more vibrant shade, of any color, then you use more paint. So I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to go around those different shapes. But I know that if my paint starts spreading around, that's okay because that is the neat thing about watercolor paints. You don't quite know what they're going to do sometimes. And that's really fun and unexpected. So I'm going to speed up the video and paint this background. Alrighty friends. I'm finished painting my design. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project. I will see you next time.
