1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi, friends. How are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project. I will guide students step by step through all the steps that they need to take. Today, we are going to be creating a cute little chipmunk with some heart leaves. I hope that you have a lot of fun with this project. Let's get started. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a paintbrush. You will also need a cup or a bowl with clean water. You will need a black oil pastel or crayon and a paper towel. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials, and I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Chipmunk & Hearts: O in this step, we're going to draw our chipmunk design. So let's get started. Let's find the middle of our sheet of paper, and we're going to just create a circle right here, and this is going to be the head of our chickmnk. So let's go ahead and do that. My circles going to be fairly large because I want my chipmunk to be pretty big on my sheet of paper. Little chickmnks are so cute, right? But we want this one to be big enough that we can see if we're looking at the artwork from across the room. So I do have a big circle here. Alright, the next step that we're going to do is we're going to make some ears for our chipmunk, so it can hear. Then we're going to make a little nose here. So an upside down triangle. And then you can create a little smile, if you'd like. Now what we're going to do is we're going to create a little bit of detail up here. So we're going to make a line coming a little bit lower than the ear, and we're going to attach it to the nose to this angle right here. So we're going to do that with a curve line. So I'm going to come around, curve line, and then stop right there at that angle on the nose. And then I'm going to do the same thing on this side. Now I'm going to make some eyes right here. You can make any type of eye that you like. I'm just going to make some dots that are filled in right here. I like my dots to be roughly the same size, but sometimes it's challenging to get them to be exactly the same size. Now I'm going to create some cheeks right here because chipmunks have those big chubby cheeks. There we go. The next thing that we're going to do is we're going to move a little bit down from the head a little bit, and we're going to make a heart right there in the center. Now connected to this heart, we're going to make another heart right next to it. So we're going to make another heart right here. And then on this side, we're going to do the same. Just make sure those hearts are connected to each other. Alright, so this is going to be our little heart garland and it's going to be made out of green leaves, okay? Because the chipmunk loves to collect those leaves. Now let's make the body for our chipmunk. So we're going to start about right here. Come down, and then we're going to make the body down here underneath these three hearts. Okay? So let me show you what I mean. Slightly curve line. Slightly curve line. And then we're going to follow that line down, come around, and then come back up. Your shape might look a little bit different from mine, and that's okay. Alright, let's make a little bit of detail inside the body. So I'm just going to start about right here. Make a curve line, make another curve line. And then I'm going to follow this one down like this and then come back up. And then I'm going to make some little hands that are holding the hearts. And then I'm going to connect those hands to this part of the chipmunk's body like this. Alright. The next thing that we're going to do is come down here to the bottom, and we're going to create some very simple legs and feet. So little legs coming down, curve line and do the same thing on this side. And then if you'd like to add some little toes, you can go ahead and do that. Alrighty. So this chipmunk is in the forest with some green leaves. So what we're going to do is we're going to create a forest floor down here at the bottom. So I'm making some lines that aren't that straight going all the way across the bottom. Now, as I'm looking at my chipmunk, I felt like there was something missing. And you know what's missing? It's the tail. So we need to add a tail for our chipmunk. So you can either add a tail on the left hand side or the right hand side. It's up to you. I'm going to add my tail on the right. Let me show you how we're going to make the tail. So coming out from the arm, what we're going to do is we're going to make a curve line that comes into a little bit of a hook and if you go off of your sheet of paper, that's okay. Just let your tail go off of the sheet of paper. That's no problem. Now we're at the hook, and then we come back in, come down, and then we come to the side. Now what we're going to do is we're going to add a little bit of a lighter area underneath here. So we start at that point, and then we come down, and then we come back and we hit at the side, as well. So my chipmunks tail's pretty small. If yours is bigger, that's great. And if it's smaller than mine, that's okay, too, because different chipmunks have different sized tails. Alright, now that we have the tail finished, let's go back to what we were doing before. Alright, so we have our leaves right here, and they are heart shaped. And what we're going to do is we're going to just create some more leaves, some more hearts. So I'm going to just start creating some hearts, some big hearts, small hearts. You can make as many hearts as you like that fit on your piece of paper. Alrighty friends. I'm finished drawing my design. If there's anything else that you'd like to add to your design. Go ahead and do that right now. And then when we come back, we will start painting our chipmunk design. 3. Step 2: Paint the Chipmunk: In this step, we are going to paint our chipmunk design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we are going to add one or two drops of water into each of our pans of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up our paint a little bit so that it is easier for us to use. So I encourage my students to take this step because it really does help. Alright, friends, now that our paints are softening up, let's turn our attention to our design. So here we have our little chipmunk, and this chipmunk is holding some hearts that are going to be leaves, and there's also going to be some falling leaves which are hearts all around this cutie. So what we're going to do is we're going to start by painting this part of our chipmunk brown. So we're going to create a light brown, and we're going to start painting our chipmunk. Alright. I'm also going to paint the ears and this part of the body and the arms and the legs and feet brown, as well. All righty friends, now that I'm finished painting my ears, my face, my body, arms, legs, and top of the tail, what we're going to do next is we are going to paint with a little bit of gray. We're going to paint this area with gray, this area with gray. We're going to leave this stripe right here white, okay? Because chipmunks do have a little bit of white on them, right? So I'm going to make some gray, and I'm going to make it out of the color black. I'm going to add some water drops to my palette, and then I'm going to add a little bit of black paint. Black is a very powerful color, so you don't need that much. There we go. Good. Perfect. Alrighty. The last thing that I'm going to do is paint these little cheeks, pink, a light pink. Alrighty, friends, I'm finished painting the chipmunk. And the next step, what we're going to do is we are going to be painting these little heart leaves. 4. Step 3: Paint the Hearts: And in this step, we are going to paint the heart leaves. So let's get started. So what I'm going to do is I'm just going to carefully start painting in my leaves, and I'm going to use this shade of green. Your shade of green might look a little bit different from mine, or maybe you even have one or two choices. So just choose the green that you like if you do have a choice and be careful when you're painting. Try to stay in those lines. But if you go outside of the lines a little bit, that's okay. Don't worry about that too much. Alright, friends, I finished painting the heart leaves. When we come back, we will start painting the sky and the ground. So I will see you back here in the next video. 5. Step 4: Paint the Background: In this step, we are going to paint the ground and the sky. So let's get started. You get to choose the colors that you like to paint the ground and the sky. I'm going to choose the colors very light brown down here for the forest floor, and then I'm going to choose to paint the sky blue. So I'm going to start with a forest floor, and I'm going to use just a little tiny bit of brown because I want my forest floor to be pretty light. I want that to be a light tan color, a light brown color. So I'm going to go ahead and paint this forest floor, and then I'm going to move on to the sky. Alrighty friends, I'm finished painting, my chipmunk design. I had a lot of fun with this project. I hope that you did, as well. I will see you next time.
