1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi, friends. How are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project. I will guide students step by step through all the steps that they need to take. Today we are going to be creating this fun and festive pinata design. I hope that you have a lot of fun with this project. Let's get started. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a paintbrush. You will also need a cup or a bowl with clean water and a paper towel and a set of oil pastels or crayons. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials, and I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Pinata Design: I in this step, we are going to draw our pinata design. So let's get started. What we're going to do is we're going to start with a circle right here in the center, and then we're going to expand out with some different shapes. Okay? So we're going to start with a circle about this big. Let's choose a dark color of oil pastel or crayon. I'm going to be choosing this dark purple, but you can choose any dark color that you'd like. Alright. We really want to be able to see those colors. So let's go ahead and start by drawing a medium sized circle about right here in the center of our sheet of paper. If it's a little bit to the left or a little bit to the right, that's okay. And your circle does not need to be perfect. Okay? So what we're going to do now is we're going to attach some triangles to your circle. Let me show you what I mean. So one side of the triangle is going to be the circle, and then the other two parts are going to be the other sides of the triangle. All right? So we're going to start about right here, go up, and then come down. And then we're going to make another triangle right here. So triangle here, and then a triangle here. And then a triangle here. And then a triangle here. There we go. If your triangle goes off of your piece of paper, that's okay. Now that we have our circle and our triangles, what we're going to do is we're going to add some little ribbons at the end of each triangle. So little ribbons that come out from each end of the triangle like this. Some of little ribbons to make it a little bit more festive. If you want to make more than two, you can go ahead and do that. Alright, so now we can add some detail. So go ahead and fill in the circle and fill in the triangles with some different designs. I'm just going to give you some suggestions, but you, of course, can do whatever you like because this is your artwork. So I'm just going to make some patterns and designs with my oil pastels, and you might want to do the same with yours or your crayons, if you have crayons. And you can use any different colors that you like. I think I might want to put a little flower in the center here. You can make some dots or some hearts. It's completely up to you. Just go ahead and decorate your pinata in a fun and festive way. I think I want to make that little circle a little bit bigger. There we go. Now that your circle is complete, go ahead and move to your triangles and do some decorating on there, as well. I think I'm just going to make some stripes on mine, and you can watch me, and then you can start your own. Now that we have our pinata design, what we're going to do is we're going to move to the background and add some bright colors, shapes and lines to our background. So my pinata is closer to the top than the bottom, so I'm going to add some flags down here. And then around my pinata in the background, I'm going to add maybe some circles or triangles and different types of lines, and I'm definitely going to use a lot of different colors for those. I'm going to start out with some flags down here at the bottom. I'm going to make a line, a curve line like this, and then I'm going to attach some triangles to the line. Then I'll also add maybe some designs into these flags. There we go. Now I'm just going to work on the background, and I'm going to add some small triangles with my green. And then what I'm going to do is I'm just going to keep adding things until I feel like I'm finished. Yeah. Alrighty friends, I feel like I have quite a few different shapes, and I have these swirly lines right here, these spirals. I think I'm going to do one more thing. I think I'm going to use this lighter purple, and I'm just going to add some small dots into the spaces where I feel like it needs a little bit extra something, okay? Because I want this to be very fun and festive. Alrighty. Now, take a look at your design. If there's anything else that you'd like to add, go ahead and do that now. And in the next step, we will start painting our design. 3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we are going to start painting our design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add one or two drops of water into each of our pans of paint. And what this will do is it will soften our paint a little bit so that it is easier for us to use. I really do encourage my students to take this step because it does help. Now that our paints are softening up, let's turn our attention to our design. So here we have our pinata. We have some flags and some designs in the background. What we're going to focus on in this step is we're going to focus on painting the pinata. And if you choose to make some flags, we will paint those, as well. And then any shapes that you need to paint on your background. We're not going to paint the actual area behind the shapes. We're just going to be painting the pinata. The shapes and the flags, if you have them. In the next step, that's when we're going to start painting all of these spaces around those shapes. Okay? Sound good. Alright, so you get to choose the colors that you would like to paint your pinata and your flag and all of your different shapes. You get to choose. Let's keep it to those bright colors, okay? Let's remember that pinatas are usually nice and bright and colorful. So we're going to make sure that that's what our color choices are. All right? What I'm going to do is I'm just going to start painting and having fun. Alrighty friends, I'm finished painting my design. I'm looking around to make sure that I got all of those little spaces, the little tiny shapes, the circles and the triangles. I missed a couple down here, but then I said, Oh, I saw them last moment. Okay, so these little shapes right here, those are little cutouts on the flag. So I'm going to paint those areas the same colors as the background, which I've decided that I'm going to paint pink, right? So when we come back, we will start painting the background. 4. Step 3: Paint the Background: In this step, we are going to paint the background. So let's get started. I've decided that I'm going to paint my background pink, and you get to choose the color that you'd like to paint your background. You can choose one color or more than one color. I'm going to stick to one color, and that's the color pink. So what I'm going to do because I'm going to need quite a bit of pink paint is I'm going to put some water into one of my wells, and then I'm going to add some pink paint to that because I want my pink paint to be more of a soft color, not really strong, so I'm going to add some water to it. Let's check it out. Make sure that's what I want. Yep, that looks great. Alright, I'm going to go ahead and speed up this video. And as I go over my crayon or my oil pastel, you will see that oil pastel or crayon resists the paint, so it will stand out a little bit. Alright? I'm going to try not to go into the space where I have other colors, but if I do, that's okay. Watercolor paints love to run around a little bit, so if they mix together, that's okay. All right. I'll see you back here in just a minute. Alrighty friends, I'm finished painting my pinata design. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project. I will see you next time.
