1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi, friends. How are you? I hope you're having
a great day today. I'd like to introduce
you to this project. This is a drawing and
watercolor painting project that I designed,
especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or
painting experience at all to be successful
with this project. Today, we are going
to be creating this sloth in the rainforest. Let's talk about
the supplies and the materials that you will
need for this project. The first thing
that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints
and a paper brush. You will also need a cup or
a bowl with clean water. You will need a set of
oil pastels or crayons will work if you do not have oil pastels available to you, and you will also
need a paper towel. Go ahead and gather all of
those supplies and materials, and I'll see you back
here in the next video.
2. Step 1: Draw a Sloth Design: A. In this step, we are going to draw
our sloth design. So let's get started. The first color
that we're going to choose is the color black. So I'm going to choose
my black oil pastel. If you're using oil
pastels, choose your black, and if you're using crayons, you can also choose
your black crayon. What we're going to do is find the middle of our
piece of paper. The middle of my piece of
paper is about right here. And our eyes of our sloth They're going to go about at the midpoint right
here in the middle. But what we're going
to do first is go a little bit up from the middle, and we're going to
create a circle for the sloths head in face. Let's start about right here. We're going to come down and just do your best
on your circle. Make sure that your circle is
not too small or too large. I think I'm going to
go back over here, and I'm going to
go slow carefully. Do you see how I'm doing that? Go slowly and carefully, so I do my best
work. There we go. Now, as you can see, my circle is not perfect, and that's okay. That's what makes
art interesting when things aren't
perfect. Okay okay? Your circle will probably
not be perfect either. Just make sure it's big
enough so that we can include our sloths eyes, nose and mouth. Okay. All right. Now that we have our circle for our head and our
face for our sloth. Now that we have the circle
for our sloths face, what we're going to do is
add some features inside. We're going to start
with some eyes. Let's make an area for the eyes. I'm going to make a curve line
coming out from the side, this left hand side, and then I'm going
to do the same thing on the right hand side. Now, inside of these spaces, I'm going to make
some curve lines, and these are going to
be the sloths eyes. Now, between these two shapes, let's make an oval for the nose. Then you can even make a small
mouth, if you'd like to. I'm going to put
mine right here, just a small little smile. Now what we're going to do is we are going to start
about right here. So we're almost to the middle of our sloths top of his head. We're going to move a little
bit over to the left. What we're going to do
is we're going to make a line that goes around
that initial circle. And it's going to end
up about right here. We're going to go a little bit more straight here
at the bottom. Let me show you what I mean. So I start here. I
go around and notice how slowly and carefully I'm moving because I really
want to do a good job. And then I'm going to
stop about right here. All right, so it's almost
like a backwards letter C. What we're going
to do now is we're going to go back
up to this line. And from this line, we're going
to make a curve line that goes up and then comes down. And this is going
to be the line for our sloths back and leg. So let's go ahead and do that. So start here at the line. Come up. And then come down, and we'll end about right there. Now, from here, what
we're going to do is we're going to make
a slanted line up. And as you can see, this is one of the back
legs for our sloth. Now let's make the front leg. So what we're going to
do is start right here, and we're going to come
down to about right here, which is about even with this line right here
with this point. So let's make a slanted line coming down about right there. Now what we're going to do
is we're going to connect this line right here to this
line that we just made. So I'm going to do that with a slightly curved
line like this. So now we have the
back leg that is closest to us and the front
leg that is closest to us. We're still not done
with the black, but we need to make a
switch with our colors, and then we're going
to come back to the black in just a moment. So what we're going
to do now is we're going to pick up our
brown because we're going to create a branch for our
sloth to be resting on. So we're going to make
a small line here. And then we're going to
follow that line all the way across to about right here and then come
out on this side. So let me show you that again. So we start here and
we make a small line, and then we jump over the sloth, and then we come out
over here on this side. Now, when we look at branches, they're not just
one line, right? We need to make another
line down here. So we're going to follow
along with that first line. We're going to make
another small line. Come across another small line, jump over, and then we're
going to make another line. So this is our branch, as you can see that our
sloth is resting on. So now we're going to put
our brown away and look at how small my brown oil pastel
is it broke the other day. So it still works,
though, right? Alright, now I'm
going to pick up my black oil pastel again because I'm going to be able to finish the back
legs of my sloth. So to do that, what
I'm going to do is I'm going to come
about right here. That's almost to the
bottom of this back leg, and I'm going to make a
slightly curved line. And then coming out from the
bottom part of the branch, I'm going to make another line. And this is going to be the back leg on the other
side of the branch. And then I'm going to make
another leg right here. So I'm going to do
the same thing. I'm going to start
about right here, make a slightly curved line. And then I'm going to
go about right here on the branch and then make
another slightly curved line. So it looks like the sloth
is resting on this branch. Can you see that? All right. The next thing that we're
going to do is we're going to make some little lines here for the feet
and toes our sloth. I'm going to make three
slightly curved lines, just like that. All right. And now we're finished
with our black. So if you are using oil pastels, your hands might get
a little bit messy. Now would be a good time
to wipe your hands. If they are a little bit messy. Keep in mind, all of the oil pastel might not
come off of your hands, and that's okay, but most
of it probably will. Oil pastels can get
a little bit messy. All right, so what
we're going to do now is we are going to add a little bit of
background to our design. So sloths live in the
tropical rainforest, so we want some greenery
to be around our sloth. So let's go ahead and take a green crayon or a
green oil pastel, and you're just going
to start filling up the space around the sloth. With some greenery, any type
of greenery that you'd like. I'm just going to
make some leaves. So you can make the same
kind of leaves that I make, or you can make
different leaves. But let's go ahead and do that. We're going to make
our leaves pretty big. All right? This is the type of leaf that I'm going to
make. It's pretty simple. It's just two curve lines that are connected
together. All right. So let's see, I'll
maybe make one here. And I think that's
the only leaf that I'm going to put here at the top because I've
run out of space. But I see some space
down here at the bottom. So I'm going to add
some more leaves, and I'm going to make sure
that they're nice and big. So I can fill up this space. Maybe I'll come out down
here at the bottom. I'm going pretty quickly, but you can take your
time if you'd like. So now you can see the space is pretty much filled
here at the bottom. I'm going to move
to the top and fill up the space at the top
with some more leaves. All right, I'm finished
drawing on my design, so you keep drawing until all of your space is filled
up, and you are happy. When we come back
in the next video, we will start adding
some watercolor paints.
3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we're going
to paint our design, so let's get started. The first thing that we're
going to do is we are going to add a drop or two of water
into each pan of paint. And what this will do
is it will soften up our paints so that they
are easier for us to use. I always encourage
my students to take a moment to
put a drop or two of water so that the paints soften up and the paints
dissolve a little bit. All right? So what we're going to do now that our
paints are softening up, let's turn our attention
to our design. So we're going to be
painting our sloth brown, different shades of brown, and then you get to
decide which color you would like to use for your
leaves and your background. Okay? But we are going to use different shades of
brown for the sloth. As for the branch, I'm going to be
using brown as well. Let me show you
how we're going to make some different
shades of brown. I'm going to put some water into one of my wells like this. I'm just dipping my paint
brush into the water, and then I am putting those
drops into one of the wells. Then I'm going to
add a little bit of brown paint like this. Mix it around. I want this
paint to be pretty light. That's perfect.
I'm going to paint the face of my sloth with
this light light brown. It's like a tan color. Going to be pretty careful. Try to stay in those lines. Now I'm going to add a
little bit more brown to my water and I'm going to then I need it a little
bit darker than that. Then I'm going to paint
the eye area and the body. There we go, when it dries, it'll get a little bit darker. Now I'm going to also paint
the body with this color. I'm going to go ahead
and start here. I'm going to remember
if my paint goes outside of the lines a
little bit, that's okay. Don't worry about that too much. That's the nature of
watercolor paints it loves to just spread
around on its own. I'm going to speed
up the video a bit and it's going to look
like I'm speed painting, but I'm really taking my time. Now I'm going to paint
the branch and I want it to be a little bit
darker than the sloth, so it really stands out. I added a little bit more paint the brown paint to the water. So it will be the branch
will be a little bit der. Here we go. All right. So now we're
finished painting our sloth. When we come back,
we will be painting the nose of our sloth
and the background. So I will see you back
here in the next video. I.
4. Step 3: Paint the Background: In this step, we will be
painting the background of our design,
let's get started. I'm going to paint my leaves
green and my sky blue, and I'm going to paint
the Sloths nose black. Let me start out with the nose. I'm going to put a little
bit of water here, and then just a to tiny
bit of black because I don't want the nose to be
super super dark black, but just about that
color like a dark gray. Now I'm going to
go ahead and start painting my leaves
green, lighter green. Some of them might be
a little bit darker. Go to take my time so
I do my best work. And what I'll do is I'll speed up this video so
you can watch me, and then I'll see you back
here in just a minute. Alright, friends, I finish
painting my sloth design. I think it looks really great. I hope that you had a lot
of fun with this project. I will see you next time.
