1. Introduction: Photoshop is a tool that's used by most graphic design industry experts. And it's so popular for a good reason. There are very few things that you can do with it when it comes to editing photos. But of course, it's a double-edged sword because with a lot of functionality that are tons of hidden tricks and secret keyboard shortcuts that are invisible and hard to come across when normally using the program and not knowing them could make someone's workflow a lot more sluggish and slow. I've been learning and using Photoshop to manipulate images and create YouTube thumbnails for over five years now. And I've collected all the tips and tricks that are most useful to me. So in this quick and dense Photoshop course, I'll show you more than 100 techniques, tips, tricks, and keyboard shortcuts to become more productive with this software. So if you're still open-minded about saving time when photo editing, I'll see you in the first lesson. 2. Class project: In this lesson, I'll tell you about the class project, and it's going to be very simple. By the end of the class, I want you to pick and apply a single technique from this course to any image of your choosing. It could be adding an Instagram filter effect, creating a double exposure, a sun flare or anything you didn't know how to do before, and then post it in the project gallery so others can take inspiration and see the progress that you've made. But the main thing that I want to emphasize here is that it's very important to try out new things that you learn yourself. You see our brains are not designed for keeping information when we don't put it to use. That's why I encourage you to open Photoshop and go along with me pausing the course along the way and trying the keyboard shortcuts and techniques yourself. As I showcase that, that way you're going to improve your chances of actually remembering them when you need to use them in the future. With that said, I'll see you in the first lesson where you'll learn about useful Photoshop keyboard shortcuts. 3. Photoshop Keyboard Shortcuts: Let's start with Photoshop keyboard shortcuts. You can increase brush size by holding Alt and mouse and dragging left or right. You can do the same with the brush hardness by dragging up or down with the pen tool hold Alt and you can control the anchor handles or Alt click on a point to get rid of the handle that's coming out of it. You can also hold control and move control points and handles that have already been placed to drag around your canvas, hold down the spacebar. Bonus tip is to hit Control plus K to open preferences, click Tools and turn on Over Scroll, which will let you move your Canvas even when you're zoomed out of it in camera raw filter, hold, Shift to reveal auto adjustment buttons for each of the basic adjustments. You can also double-click on any slider to reset it to default. Speaking of resetting, you can reset zoom to fit your screen with Control plus zero. You can also hover over any tool on the left to see the key on your keyboard that activates it when you press it. Learning the basic ones like V for move, for lasso and P for the Pen tool or a must. Now if you hold Shift while pressing any letter for a tool, it will cycle between that set of tools, coming back to the pen tool when you create a path with it, hit Control plus Enter, and it'll turn it into a selection. If you're not happy, control plus D will de-select. And if you forget the control, pressing, only the d will toggle your colors back to the default black and white. Pressing X, quickly switch between the background and the foreground color. You can press and hold a letter of any tool on the left. And when you release that key from your keyboard, you'll return back to the tool that you've been using before. This is great for quick switching between tools without having to use your mouse to do so on the left, coming back to the brush tool, press any number on your keyboard and you'll change its opacity to that number, pressing two numbers fast, we'll set the exact opacity amount when the tool is active, hold Alt, and you'll be able to quickly toggle the color picker if you're masking something and trying to paint in a corner, instead of making your brush smaller to try to get it hit X to select black, and then dab on the corner, hit X again and then paint back in the corner. Next up is Control Shift Alt E, which merges all visible layers as a new layer. This is very useful for applying a final camera raw filter at the end of your composite Alt, backspace fills your canvas or the selection with the background color and the Control Backspace fills it with Foreground Color. Control R will hide or show the rulers from which you can drag a guide which objects will snap to control. Alt C will let you change your canvas size without resizing everything that's on it. Control Alt, I will let you change your image size, which will re-size everything that's on your canvas with it also holding Alt will let you zoom in with your mouse, scroll wheel, Shift Control Z will step forward in Photoshop, this is useful when you have undone too many actions with Control Z and one to go back, control Shift N and enter will quickly insert a new layer and control plus j will duplicate the current layer Control Alt G will create a clipping mask, though I prefer holding down Alt and click on the line between layers to do the same thing, control plus open bracket will send a layer down and control and closed bracket will send it up. Add shift to both of those shortcuts. And you'll send the layers to the very top, the very bottom of the pile, holding Control while dragging something will stop it from snapping to different objects. If you want to scroll through your layers without using your mouse, hold Alt and press the closed or open brackets. If you accidentally click away from your selection, click Control Shift D to re-select and bring it back. You can invert the selection with Control Shift I, you can hold Alt and click on a layer mask to view, a black and white mask view to better understand what you've masked out. If you want to select only what's on the layer hold control and click on the layer thumbnail Shift Control a will bring up the camera raw filter shift and plus or minus will cycle through layer blending modes Control Alt zero will let you view the image in its actual size, holding Alt and clicking on the icon next to the layer will hide all other layers and leave this one visible. Once you're done Photoshopping it, hold Alt again and click on the I to reveal back the hidden layers Control Shift period will increase the size of selected text control plus h toggle hiding of the selection. The selection or a path will still be there, but you won't be able to see it. Hold down Control Space and drag with your mouse right or left to zoom in or out in any part of your image, hitting Q will toggle the quick mask mode, where you can paint with black to de-select places in your image. And once you hit Q again, and the Mask icon, those areas that you painted over will be masked out when you use the Dodge and Burn tools, hold Alt to temporarily switch between them. 4. Photoshop Tips & Tricks: Let's continue with Photoshop Tips and Tricks. When adding images to Photoshop, you don't have to download them. Just copy one from Google or any stock photo website and paste it into Photoshop. You can quickly duplicate anything by holding Alt and dragging it out. It also works with Layer Styles and effects to access those effects. Double-click on the side of any layer, since it's easier to paint from up to down rather than side-to-side. You can click Our, then rotate your canvas 90 degrees and paint in a comfortable direction. Once you're done, double-click on the rotation tool to reset the view, you can quickly select a single colored background with the Magic Wand Tool or go to Select Subject, to select the subject using AI, if you right-click with any tool, you'll see a context menu appear where you can quickly change the most important and widely used settings for that tool. You can move the selections that you've already started by pressing space bar. Now you won't have to de-select and select everything again to get the perfect positioning. Next, you can hover over any numbers in front of any slider in Photoshop and drag it left or right without having to click and actually use the slider in Camera Raw. Click this button at the bottom to see a before and after of your image. When you make a path with the pen tool, you can go to Paths, then click this path options button at the top, choose exclude overlapping shapes. And now you can create another path which will punch a hole in this one, as you can see from the layer thumbnail of popular effect with Photoshop is double exposure to create your own mask out your subject and alter drag these subjects mask onto that image. Now simply set the blend mode of the background to screen and move the background layer below the subject layer, you'll now have created a basic double exposure effect to increase the details for the subject. Select the color black, turned down the opacity a bit and paint over the background mask to bring back some key features of the subject. Now sometimes when you press Control plus T to transform something, you won't be able to find the transform handles. In that case, hit Control Plus is zero and del, zoom out to where that object begins when composing two images together, usually what happens is that the colors don't match. To fix that, create a new curves adjustment layer and clip it to the layer you're going to be adjusting colors off by Alt, clicking on the line between two layers. Now select the curves adjustment layer, thumbnail, and click on the Auto button at the top right, whilst holding Alt, make sure that the find dark and light colors box is selected and the snap neutral midtone Xbox is de-selected. Now click on the highlights and shadows color boxes, and select the brightest highlight and the darkest shadow in your background image, the one that you're matching colors too. Now all that's left is fine tuning the curve a little bit to match the colors better. And here's the final results. One of the most frequent uses of Photoshop is to remove unnecessary objects or people in images. And here's the best way to do it. Select the object selection tool and click on your subject. Go to Select, Modify, Expand, and enter in ten to 20 pixels. Then right-click select Fill and okay, and the person from the image is now gone while cropping, you can right-click to choose from different common crop ratios, like one-to-one or 16 by nine. There's also a handy front image option that simply crops to the exact same ratio and resolution as your original image. So quickly enhance the look of any image and give it some extra punch. You'll need to learn about the S-curve, add a curves adjustment layer in Photoshop, then drag one control point upwards near the top right of the line, and the second downwards near the bottom left, the more pronounced the S is, the more contrast and saturation the image will have four quick, automatic adjustments. You can go to Image and choose Auto Tone, contrast, or color. However, be careful, this is a destructive way of altering images and can't be undone later in the composite. Now what's not a destructive is creating a Dodge and Burn layer Alt. Click on the New Layer icon in the layers panel, set the mode to overlay and check filled with overlay neutral color. Now you can dodge and burn on this layer to affect all the layers underneath without being destructive. You can also add a contrast to adult image and increase the overall look of it by making the highlights pop, add a new layer and select a soft white brush to paint over with the brush where you think the highlights should be. Then set the blend mode to color dodge and double-click on the empty space of the layer, then de-select the transparency shapes layer from here, decrease the fill. It'll give you a much better result. You can see the before and after and how the highlights are now more pronounced in the image. To place text behind anything in Photoshop, go to select and subject, then select your text layer and hit Group. Now press the Mask icon and then hit Control Plus I on your keyboard to invert, you can now freely move your text behind the subject. Now if you ever need to adjust the shape of any object, you can go up to Edit and choose Puppet Warp. Now add points to where your object will bend. Think of them as joins for the object, than simply move those points around and you'll transform that object. What's also useful is the Refine Edge tool, which lets you well refined edges of objects that are hard to select. Mask out to find it, double-click on the layer mask and select it on the left than simply paint over the areas of the selection that you want to refine the edge off now to tidy up your skin and get rid of imperfections, use the patch tool for completely erasing imperfections, or even better, select the spot healing brush tool. Then in this drop-down menu, click lightened, which will make the darker pixels of the imperfections lighter. Photoshop will now look at the image around the imperfection that you selected and make it less visible by lightning. Yet, if you have a dark wrinkle by selecting lightened, it will simply brighten up the ring coal and thus make it seem less obvious when looking at the overall image, but it will still leave the detail of the wrinkle there. So it still looks realistic. This works with lighter imperfections to just select the dark and instead of lightened for that to work. Now you can also select the crop tool and click Content Aware at the top. Once you crop your image now and commit the changes photoshopped will fill in areas that are missing from your image. If you constantly create composites with the same resolution, like thumbnails for YouTube, you can click new file. When you open Photoshop, set up your settings, click the download arrow, name your preset, and click Save. Next time you open Photoshop, you'll be able to choose this canvas size as a preset. Speaking of presets, when you're saving your PSD file, add a T at the end, and it'll turn it into a preset. You can now open this file multiple times and start creating from there. And the next time you open it, again, it will still be the same preset. What's also useful is if you've forgotten how to access a shortcut or a feature in Photoshop, use the search to find any kinds of stuff. Once you find the tool you're looking for and hover over it, photoshop will show you where you can find it next time. And what if you have a very low resolution logo or an image? Go to image, image size and make it larger than go to Filter Blur, Gaussian Blur, and increase it up to a point where the harsh pixelation is not visible anymore than a Curves Adjustment Layer and move both sliders towards the middle, which will get rid of the blurry edges if you feel like your image is too yellow, go to Filter, camera Raw Filter than in the basic adjustments. Pick the color picker and click on a color that should be a natural gray in your picture, like a great road or a white wall. This will fix the color casts in your picture. Next up, when you cut and paste a selection to a new layer, photoshop will place it in the middle of the screen if you want to paste it to a new layer. But keep the position the same. Use Control X to cut and Control Shift V to paste in place and to quickly add an arrow for a YouTube thumbnail, e.g. select the Line Tool, go up to the gear icon and select End and increase the width and the length to make your arrow bigger than just draw a line. Now that you have a terrible arrow, you can make it look fabulous with Layer Blending Options, adding stroke and the drop shadow will make your arrow a lot more noticeable on smaller images like thumbnails. You can also achieve some cool effects on random images. If you add an adjustment layer and just change its blending mode, moving over to textures. And you can create a fake rain texture in Photoshop by adding a new layer filled with black, adding some noise than a slanted motion blur. And finally, setting the layer to screen, now add some contrast and you'll have a rain texture. What's also cool is if you want to quickly change a color of any simple object, you can make a selection of it. Choose the color replacement tool to paint over that object with a new color. Now if you want to clear recent files in Photoshop when you're on this home screen, go to Files, hover over, Open Recent, and choose clear recent file lists. You can also easily make an Instagram filter effect, add a mustard yellow color fill layer and then set its blend mode to multiply, decrease the opacity, and then paint with a red color on a separate layer set to screen for an added faded effect. Another really useful tool is Blend. If you can find it in the layer blending options, once you double-click on the side of a layer, blend if blends one layer into another based on the content of either of the two layers. Moving over to something a bit more simple, which is light leaks. If you select Create New and then gradient, add two more colors to the left, make the first one white, second one bright yellow, and the third one to read. And then make sure that the other end of the gradient is transparent. Now set the blend mode of the gradient layer to screen and you can double-click on the gradient layer and position the light leak in different places of your image to make it look **** a cool, to make your selections a lot smoother and sharper when you mask something out, double-click on the mask icon and increase the smoothness to the point that the harsh edges disappear. Then increase the feather until everything smooths out, and finally, increase the contrast and your selection will become a lot better if you selected a little too much. You can also shifted the edge to the left to contract the mask. 5. Fixes For Common Photoshop Issues: Now, here are a few fixes for the most common issues when it comes to Photoshop that I wish I knew earlier and didn't have to spend time googling if the sidebar tools have disappeared, go to Window and select tools, then simply drag them to the left until they snap back there. If your camera Raw Filter is grayed out and not working, Come up to Image Mode and select RGB color instead of CMYK color. If the smoothing slider is grayed out or not even available when you bring up the brush tool, then go to brush settings on the right and check the smoothing slider. Now smoothing will appear in your menu bar the next time you select that brush, if liquid phi is grayed-out, go to Edit Preferences performance, and make sure the graphics processor is selected. Then click Advanced Settings and check use OpenCL. Once you restart Photoshop, the liquefy should work. If it doesn't try unchecking all the check marks in the advanced settings. 6. Final Thoughts: You've reached the end of this class. Big congratulations for me. And I hope there's at least one keyboard shortcut or trick that you'll take away from it and use in your own creative project. Of course, the best thing when trying to learn new things is to put them in you. Because if you know a trick exists, there's a very high chance you'll forget it if you don't use it to over time. That's why I encourage you to share at least one technique or effect from this course that you've applied any image or object of your choosing in the project gallery. And just one more thing. Could you do me a favor and helped me improve by leaving a review for this course just out of curiosity, I want to know what you thought about it. I hope that you enjoyed and gain some knowledge from it. Thank you once again, good luck and I'll see you in a future course.
