Something different?

Something different? - image 1 - student project

Ok so I went and tried something different?

This is the second Will tutorial I'm trying out, the first was a real joy to paint but as I was watching this one something kept poking me in my brain... He said something in passing like, it doesn't really matter what colour you put down as long as the values are right, the image will still read fine... And I kept wondering, really, how true is this?? If I made this girl purple, will she still turn out ok? So I tried it. With coloured pencils, of course, because my watercolour skills aren't there yet.

I picked a palette and made her pink and purple and thought, wow! She's pink and purple and it still reads? But she kind of looks like a cadaver... And then I thought... is this what he means when he says that he doesn't look as much at the colour as the temperature of the colours? Because as much as my brain understands what a cool and warm colour is... my eyes/intuition just don't get it. But I think this is it, the balance is off... So I put in yellows and oranges and she suddenly came alive!

I don't know! I'm reeling because I feel like my mind has expanded with this exercise... Like, skin can be a rainbow? Does that mean trees and leaves and grass don't have to be green? They can be whatever?! Really anything can be whatever??

So apologies Will if I've butchered this girl. Not the right medium and not the right colours. But I've learned so much! Before this I was focused on getting the 'right' result, so copying colour mixes and imitating things stroke for stroke... But I think our freedom lies in the broader concepts you talk about as you paint... This has been such a fun explore, thank you!!
