Relics of Hawaii
Hi Tom, thank you for the amazing class! This is the first Skillshare class I've actually taken part in and I really enjoyed it! I've always wondered how illustrators incorporate textures into their designs so I'm glad I found this guide! Usually my illustrations are quite detailed, so it was really fun to play around with textures and simple shapes.
I recently visited Hawaii (and America) for the first time not long ago and I'm still thinking about it! So I thought I'd create a postcard to pay homage to that journey.
1. I began by making a list of objects I could include, then I narrowed it down and sketched out a layout using my Instagram pictures as references. By having my objects sketched out I was able to see what kind of textures and words I might need later.
2. Next I scanned these into Photoshop, locked the layer and began drawing the basic shapes. I went for a turquoisey colour because it reminded me of the nearby beach.
3. I ended up staying up quite late playing around because I enjoyed the process so much!
I'm really pleased with the final result and can't thank Tom enough for opening up a new area of illustration for me. My head is now teeming with ideas of what I could do next, I'd definitely recommend having a go and sharing your result if you've been following along!
