About This Class

Here is the guide for your class project:

1. Prepare your paint, brushes, water and paper.  Try to paint using natural light or under a bright source of light.

2. For beginners, do some exercises first in creating petals. You can find the exercises under the Watercolor Washes and Techniques section.

3. Paint the flowers. This is not something too serious where we have to think about detailing and depth or dimensions.  This is more about being free and tapping into your intuition.  Just be creative and feel free to add your own style.

By the end of this class you will not only have bookmarks to be a part of your reading journey, but you will have inspiration and confidence to paint simple and easy loose watercolour florals.

1. Hello & Welcome: Hello everyone. I hope you're all doing fantastic today. I'm Orissa, an artist, photographer and a yoga instructor based in Manila, Philippines. This class, I am going to show you how to paint a simple watercolor floral bookmarks with using only few washes and techniques with using just three colors. Have this watercolor bookmarks be a part of your reading journey. Or simply and give them as gifts to your avidly their family members and friends. This is not something to Siri here, so you have to think about a serious detailing. This is more about being free, like tapping into your intuition and just let your creativity flow. Have fun painting. And I will see you on the next lesson. 2. Art Supplies: I would like to a quick round down of the supplies we need in this class. Watercolor pan sets. We have this class. We are going to use only three different colors. Two shades of blue, light and dark one, purple or violet. It is an option for you to use a little bit of red, just like what I have done in this painting. That really is my personal choice. And I like incorporating it in most of my loose floral watercolor paintings. Kind of like my signature, but I'm totally fine sharing it with you. We need a palette. I like using a ceramic dish, glasses of water, one for rinsing the brush, and one for clean water. Here I am going to use to round brushes sizes and 62. Number two, script liner brush, paper towels or a washcloth. I am going to use an Arches cold pressed watercolor paper, 300 GSM, four by six inches. I have this size all the time with me. It always comes in handy every time I travel. And so easy to use as bookmarks. Just put a tape around it for borders and there you go. You got yourself to bookmarks. But of course you can manually measure and cut your paper in sizes that you want or prefer. A sturdy board to tape down our paper to avoid watercolor paper from black claim or warping, masking tape or washi tape to tape around our paper. Lastly, which is also another optional to use. A white gel pen, a white acrylic ink, or white gouache. 3. Washes and Techniques : Let's practice first the washes and techniques that we're going to use for this painting. I am going to show you that tonal value that we are going to use. Generally, a paintings should have a combination of these tones to build some dimensions and depths to a painting. These tones are dark tones, mid tones, low lights, and highlights. But as I have mentioned earlier, this class is more relaxing and having fun. So we really just mind the lightness and darkness of colors. With that being said, a dark, opaque shade requires less water. The more you add water to the color mix lining. The next technique is called stippling. I am a simply doing a single dot after another. Together. This is the technique I use in creating petals or leaves. Tip of the brush at the bottom, touching a bit of the dots. Then lay the body of the brush, tip of the brush again at the top and then repeat the process. The hap sides of the panel. You could do a little bit of flickering to add some flow to the panels. 4. Flowers : I would like to quickly show you how I tape my paper. But before we begin, please make sure that your hands are free from any oil or lotion. Wash your hands first two with a soap as recently, worse can affect lost, yes. And it leaves an even washes and can even act as a racist. Right now, I am taping my paper and I am just really eyeballing or roughly estimating this. But even need a ruler to measure your paper. Please feel free to do so. Let's paint our flowers. Keep in mind, this is more of a relaxing and having fun. We are painting intuitively. We don't have to worry about depth and details too much. Just mind the tonal value, the lightness and darkness of the colors. Obviously, we are not painting a specific flower. Now, you can also simply dab a little bit of purple and the blue petals while it's wet. And I just loved to watch how the colors bleed together. I grab my dark blue painting here. And while the flowers are still wet, I simply dab single dots at the center of the flowers. This time I am going to do a lighter shade. Flowers. I add more water to my mix. I am going to speed this up a little bit. Just keep in mind of the lightness and darkness of the colors, the sizes of the flowers. You can paint some big, some small. Please do enjoy the process. Enjoy the flow of watercolor into the paper. Just savor the call and be in the moment. Okay? You can see here, I reverse the process of painting the flower. I paint the petals first and then that tiny ducts in the middle. Since I am painting a smaller flower, I use a smaller size of brushes. Just explore and see what you like and where you're comfortable with. I will see you in the next lesson to paint the leaves. 5. Leaves: Now we're going to do those beautiful dark blue leaves. Just the same process as we did with the petals. Only. These leaves are a little smaller in sizes. We use number two of round and scraped liner brushes. Of course, we will be using any dark blue color you have in your palette. Here I use the script liner brush, just flickering, so I have a skinny tiny stem. Then switch to a number to a round brush for the leaves. Same technique as the flower petals and meet together. You can also simply make a leaf with just one stroke, which you can see in a little bit here. Again. Relax and just enjoy the process. I know I keep saying that, but it's good to remind ourselves to just take it easy. Take an absolutely painting leaves over the flower petals. I am still using the same color on this one. Only I added more water to my mix to make it lighter. Okay. Over here, I decided to put dark blue dots in the middle of the flowers to give them a little bit more of character or to make him pop up a little more. 6. Adding Dots (Optional): This section of the class is totally optional for you to do. You can use whitewash, gel pen, or liquid acrylic paint, or really just an ordinary white acrylic paint. The next thing that I am going to do is actually I consider my signature, most of my Lewis flora watercolor paintings. Yes, of course, I am totally fine to sharing this tail. I guess loved putting a touch of red in flickering motion, the wave at tiny dots on top. 7. One More Time: I wanted to share with you a video of painting another piece of the bookmark. I am going to speed this up a little bit. Same process of what we just did on the first one. Just paint your stress away. Be creative, have fun, and enjoy the process. It. 8. Class Project and Thank You: Now let's remove the masking tape around. Make sure that your appeal, the tape away from the painting going out wipes. Easy as that. Now you have it in bookmarks to enjoy for yourself or give us again to your family and friends. I want to quickly show you that you can protect your bookmarks from spills in case you'd like to drink tea or coffee like me or while reading. You can use any watercolor fixative or watercolor varnish. Thank you so much for joining me and taking the time to relax together. I really hope that you did enjoy and that took something away from this class. It would be great if you could share what you create. I cannot wait to see it. Please do share on the project section. And if you posted on social media, please tag me so that I can see it. Share your work and cheer you on. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the discussion section of this class. I will get back to you as soon as I'm able.
