1. Introduction: Clothing sees a lot about
the style and personality. Making your own clothing can
just sit in a garment that is more durable,
sustainable, and non-toxic. Besides, fashion
design can be phon, and deserves to be
enjoyed by everyone. If you're someone
who thinks making your own garment can be difficult than this
class is for you. Hi, I'm cloudia, a fashion and Lifestyle
accessory designer. I have spent years
discovering new methods to incorporate sustainability
into everyday life. Join me in this class that I simplify and bring the garment making process to everyone. Tools like Clo3D may come
quicker than ever before. We even begin by finding
inspiration for concept. Then move on to the
design and customization using digital pattern making
and prototyping techniques. And finally, soon and
finish our garment. Through this class, I want
you to experience and enjoy the interconnected world of fashion design and sewing
for everyday life. After completing this class, you would be able to
appreciate the joy on making your own governments giant know, and
let's get started.
2. Class Project: The class project is to design
and make your own garment. In this class, I'll
be making a tank top. This will help you to
understand the core concepts, while also means simply
to design and execute. You can follow along with me, or you may choose to make any other garment
of your choice. We will be approaching this
project in four phases. We first design on the type of garment
we are going to make, restart making some
choices on the garment, such as the type
of neckline blend, sleep much needless, three, that start thinking
about the pattern. We can either buy a
Pattern online or an existing image of a
pattern you may already have. This is where you
find ideas by drains, struggling and searching for new inspiration and start
collecting reference images. Phase two, we will
start to design and prototype our ideas
inside of Clo3d. This is where we can express
our creativity and make design decisions
for the aesthetics and functionality of a Garment. In phase three, the plan, how we can execute our design will be making
Patterns Digitally and print them in phase for even come to the final
phase of execution, we will be cutting, sewing, and making our own garment
so we can read it all gifted to allowed one is going through the
entire design process. In this class. You'll be needing
a trial version of Clo3d and some basic sewing Tools for
completing this project. I have listed all the
necessary supplies in the class projects section. Learning happens when
you start doing, grab all the supplies and
sewing Tools to get started. After you're done, please upload your project Ashley image in the Skillshare
projects section. I can see your work
and provide feedback. It will also be a
wonderful source of inspiration to fellow students
if you have any questions, post them on the discussions so I can get back to you soon. Hope you enjoy this class
3. Learn the Clo3D Interface: Clo3d is a software that
allows you to create, Simulate, and visualize
virtual governments to a apparel production. The scope of Clo3d, this vast in this class, we will learn the essentials needed to design
our own garment. Let's first learn about
the user interface. On the right, you will see
the 2D pattern window. This is where we went
Draft and edit effect. And since this is an
important function, we will be spending a lot
of time in this window. If you're familiar
with pattern-making, human fine dissimilarity between the real-world pattern making
and the 2D pattern window. On the left, you will find
the 3D garment window. This is where you will see your patterns come to
life and form a Garment. This window displays your
garment in 3D space. Just like in real life. Any edits you make to your
pattern in the pattern window will translate an update
here in the 3D window. To the left of the
3D garment window, you will find the library. This is a collection of digital items that
you may commonly use. You will be able to
find common items such as various
types of fabrics, zyz, let us and other
accessories in the library. On the top right corner, you will see the object browser. This is List view of all your
objects in the currency. You will be able to reveal all the items used
in the garment. On the bottom right, you will see the
property editor. This lets you edit and control certain properties
and parameters of your selected object. The property editor
can use to change properties such as Fabric,
color, and prints. We'll see this class later. Now, let's see how we can
navigate the Interface. Clo3d, understand the
navigation functions. Let's open this female t-shirt from the library by
double-clicking on it, click and drag the scroll
wheel to pan view. This can be used on both the 2D pattern window
and 3D garment window. Rotate the scroll wheel
to zoom in and out. This can also be used on both the 2D and 3D
garment window. Right-click and drag on the 3D garment window to
view our own your garment. Note that this
provided to navigate the 3D space and hence only works on the 3D
government window. Now, let's tweak the
interface a bit so that all our tools are
visible and easy to access. Create a New Project
and click on Settings, and click on the User Settings. This brings up the User Settings pop-up where you can
set your preferences, click on the user
interface and change the 3D toolbar to left and 2D toolbar to the right
and click To close. This will bring the
toolpaths to these sites, allowing me to view and access
all the tools with each. This is just a matter
of preference, but I strongly recommend
you to do so because having top toolbars can hide some of the potential tools and
accessing them can be difficult. In this lesson, we
discussed the basic UI, navigation and customizing
user interface. The next lesson, let's discuss how to Make Clothes
That Fit Your Size
4. How to Make Clothes That Fit Your Size: In this lesson, let's talk
about our and our data is a customizable digital manager that allows you to
trip you Design. They can be edited to match
your body measurements. This way, you can see how a constructed pattern will
look on your avatar before making Clo3D lets you create a new or modify an existing
out there as per year. So let's see how we can
get an avatar for as. I will go to the library
and click on the attack. On the bottom, you can see the Avatar folders for
me, female and keep. I will double-click
the female folder and then double-click
on the F v2, know me a week. This will load our
data into the scene. You can change the shading of the attack by clicking
this button to the left. You can switch
between wireframe, textured or solid shaded. I prefer the solid
shaded version. As you can work without any distractions
from the textures. Openly Size folder
from the library. Different body types are
listed here, such as messy. And choose the one that fits more closer
to your body type. I'm choosing us ASTM, messy, curving, double-click the folder and choose a standard size. I will choose the size six here by double-clicking
on the file. Now, that file gets
loaded in this scene, we can verify if the pad
is closer to our Size. Opening the Alitalia editor. In the alphabet editor, we can view and change the
measurements as per your size. The defaults work for me. I'm not going to change
the numbers here. I prefer to work with interests, so I will change
the unit 2 " here. Make sure my bus and hip values of this avatar matches
closer to mine. If the size is little bigger, it Own be a major problem. Once we verify that the measurements of the
hour that matches us, we can close the if the
measurements does match yours, go to the next or
previous sizes. Feel free to explore the different sizing and
body types to find yours. Remember that our tasks are digital representations of
your body measurements. So having an avatar that matches you as
close as possible, we'll get the best results. In the next lesson, let's discuss the Methods
To Draft Patterns Digitally
5. Easy & Quick Methods To Draft Patterns: In this lesson, we will
talk about Pattern Making. We can approach
this in two ways. If you already know
to make patterns, you can start from scratch using the tools we will
discuss in this lesson. Or you may already
have a patent that is hand-drawn or even purchased online to make things simple, I have a pattern of a tank top. Let's see how we can get that working from the
2D pattern window. Right-click and choose
Add background image. Click the small folder
icon next to image file. This will bring the
file browser open the tank top referred image
from the Resources folder. A beginner, I strongly
recommend you to start with the simple matter that would
make the process varies. Notice that the image
on the 2D window is larger than the
other at that outline. I will reduce the scale
down to 30 percentage. I will arrange the pattern
by clicking and dragging the image so it will
overlap the outline. I wish to change the scale to 40 percentage to give
a little looser fit, rearrange and make sure the image or labs
the habitat nicely. You can change the opacity. I will keep it at 60%. I wish to see the lines of both my pattern and my
Al-Qaeda clearly click Okay, after you're done to edit
the background image, again, simply right-click and
select Format to debugger. I wouldn't zoom in and make
some minute moments to place my background image in
the center and click, Okay, after getting satisfactory
results with the placement, click on the 2D icon on the bottom right side to see
one dB 2D pattern window. This gives us more screen space
for us to trace the path. To trace the pattern, we will be using two
important tools. They are polygon tool
and edit Pattern tool. We will see how to use them. Select the polygon tool from the toolbar of the
2D pattern window. Start from the center and
just click on the corners. To create points
of a polynomial. We just have to make
the corner points and not worry about the
curves in between them. Just continue tracing until we finish tracing half the battle. At the last point, you can notice a pink line indicating that we are
at the correct location. To draw a center line, I will make a final point
to close the polygon. This will also be
the center line. Now, I will click and hold my left mouse button on the
back into from the toolbar. Choose Edit, go from the
Tools drop-down menu. Now, we can add points on this straight line and
pull them to form a curve. This will let us
shape or pattern. As per the design. I'm adding curve
points and forming curves on the neck.
And this side. If you notice, I have
completed tracing half of my pattern exit out of
the edit curve tool. By selecting the
Edit Pattern tool. Again. Select the center line and right-click and choose
unfolds electric editing. But soon, this will mirror the pattern.
On the other side. This option, if I change
the curve points, it will automatically update on the other side
of the pattern, just like I will press Control set on the keyboard
to undo the last action. We're mirroring the pattern so that we were leaning
on one side. It makes editing easier. This also menisci sewing, which reduces the time span and the chance of errors
Using the same technique, I have traced the
backside as well. For adding an internal dot, left-click and hold
the mouse button on the Internet polygon
slash line tool. And click on that tool. Now, click and drag the mouse to draw a dot
of the approximate size. Click on the move tool
to move the.in place. We can edit the size
of the data if needed, by dragging the hundreds. As we meet patterns in Clo3D, we will be able to appreciate the advantages of making
patterns Digitally. We are able to construct the
lines and curves without the need of physical tools are complicated
drafting procedures. Suppose you want to have this tank top made into
different sizes for your friend. Are you allowed one to my simply modify this pattern
within a few minutes. This makes anyone who's not a professional in making
Pattern To Draft, learn, and enjoy
making patterns. In the next lesson,
we will see how to Simulate The comment
on the other day
6. How to Digitally Sew & Simulate The Garment: In this lesson, let's discuss how to
simulate the pattern. So it looks more like
a finished garment. The next step after
making the patterns will be to place them
correctly on the attack. For example, we have to
place different pattern on the front side of the ADA and the backpack on the
backside of the ADA. And Easy lives, if required, will have to be
placed on the Clo3D offers arrangement
points through which we can place our patterns. Let's see how to do that. Click on the icon at the bottom right corner
to switch back to 2D, 3D split screen view. Now we have the
pattern displayed on 3D on the 3D garment window. Hello, no worthy
of that display on the left side and click on
the show arrangement points. But now you can select
different Fabric and click on the outlet that friend to place it
on the front side. Select the back Fabric and place on the backside of the Alitalia. You can now use the small
arrows to adjust the position. In this way. You can arrange any piece
of fabric that before, soon after we successfully
placed our patterns, we can move on to the
digital Sewing process. We can choose the edges that
need to be soon together, such as for the edges of the shoulders sites
and the dots. Just like create Sewing, turn off these show
arrangement points in the outer display. The next step is to sue
the open ends together. From the 2D pattern window, click the swing icon,
choose segments, sewing. Now I will click
on this side that this will simply
the edges to get. Click on one of the open edge on the top and hover the
cursor to the other edge. This will highlight how the
stitch lines will come. I'm referring to the 3D window to select the correct
pair of the top edges. Make sure to get straight
sewing lines as shown here. If you're getting
crisscross Sewing minds, we need to correct them. Select the Edit Sewing
to right-click on the Sewing edge and reversing. This will make the
Sewing nights straight. Now, even PSU, site, edge friendly segment Sewing, choose the segment suing. This tool will sue segments that are
different from each other. I will select the edge line from the back piece and press Enter. Now, select the other two edges from different and press Enter. This will, to these
sites together. I will now use the Move tool
from the 3D garment window. And we'll move the front piece a break to see my stitch lines. Make sure that all my
stitch lines are straight. Click on the large
arrow button from the 3D toolpath to
Simulate The Garment. Alternatively, you
may simply press Space-bar to simulate the Fabric and drip onto the other day. Now, my top looks a little bag and fits
lose on my avatar. Select all from
the pattern window and deduce the
size a little bit. And pushing the pattern back to the center and press Space-bar
to Simulate my garment. Again, we can repeat this process until we're
satisfied with different. Here you can see
the power of using digital tools to help us
using this technique, you may modify or
change the size of your garment at any
point in the future, I wish to hide my
background image. So I will access format to repack road by right-clicking
on the pattern window. Bring down the opacity to zero to completely hide
my background image. Now, a 2D window
looks a lot thing. I will select all my pattern
and move them to the sender. We can use Clo3D to visualize
our pattern in real time without laying on
complicated processes such as making
physical prototype. This is a game changer as
lots of time and effort. The next lesson, let's discuss digital design
and customization
7. How to Design & Style Your Garment Digitally: In this lesson,
Let's see how we can use Clo3D for
designing a Garment. At this stage, I
would like to explore different options
for the neck length, Britain and France. These details will impact
the look of the stock. This is where
digital tools shine bright and help us meet
confident design decisions, covenants, experiment and
explore the possibilities. We can now start
to design the neck Digitally by just
altering the Patterns. You can see the
changes update on the 3D garment window ten times as you
work on the pattern. This helps us
visualize at Design and enable us to make
design decisions. That we can also add extra code points to change
the code completely. Press space bar after every change you make to
treat Simulate your garment. For my design, I prefer
a curved, U-shaped make. The same way. You can
change the back neck. Changing different points will also change the look of the top. I will reduce the
height a little bit. You may also make
this as a cropped up. This way. We can design the front and back
lens and shapes. As we decide. I prefer to keep
my thoughts a little long. So I will move the
points accordingly. I will press Space-bar
to simulate, again. Changing the push off the bottom points will
change the fit of our top. We can change it to get
straight on a flat outfit. I recommend saving your project often so you can get back
from arrows and crashes. Until now, we design the
features of the stock. Friends can add a whole new
dimension to our garment. You do the last
availability of prints. It may be difficult to
choose the correct one. We can use the texture editor to view departments with
different things. This will help us to choose the light print for our design. Click on the fabric from
the object browser under the property and find the
property that sees texture. Click on the open
picture editor button. That texture editor
window opens up. We can add a texture here. We can try adding Tyler, Texas, done on the
repeat tidy checkbox. Decrease the scale using
the gizmo located on the top right corner of the texture editor
and click Play. When you're done.
In this lesson, we discussed how we can stay
on customise a Garment. The sky's the limit. There are endless possibilities. Explode and make your
creativity flow. Learning happens when you
explore and experiment more. And such digital workflows. Exploration in a very
short amount of time. In the upcoming lessons, we will see how we can execute this design in real-world so
that we can wear a Garment
8. Creating Usable Patterns For Sewing: In this lesson, we will get
the pattern out of Clo3d. We can use it to
make a real piece of clothing to make the
Sewing process easy, we need to mask some essential
such as CMA elements. I will click the same elements
icon from the toolbar, the 2D pattern window with the same elements
to it selected. Just click on the edges to create the extra space for this seems I will select the
shoulders and sites. We also need to make. Once on the backside. I wish to have a same
elements width of 15 MM. So I will select
all these seems. Holding the Shift key to
select multiple seems. Enter MM on the with
the property editor. The new SIM elements
width will be updated on all these
selected scenes. For the bottom seam, I want to have a Hamdi. So I have a value of
20 MM for the bottom. Click on the notch
from the toolbar. Now, I will click on the corners of the
shoulders to add a notch. And the same notches
on the backside to I will also add some notches on these
sites and the bottom. These notches will help us when we cut and
make the pattern. Select the whole pattern, copy and paste to
create a duplicate. I'm copy-pasting by using the standard copy paste shortcut
Control C and Control V. Since I design a symmetric will only one-half
of the pattern. Generally in such cases before the Fabric
into half and cut. This makeup work
simpler and will also reduce the amount of
paper required for printing. To delete half the pattern, simply choose the Edit tab into, select the middle line and right-click and choose
removed linked editing. Now, I would just select the points on this side
and press the Delete key. Since we removed
the linked editing, we can edit or delete one side without
affecting the other. The similar way, we can delete one-half of the
backside to average, just move the pattern
a little closer. There are some notches in the middle line which
we won't be needing. So I'm using the notch tool and selecting the notches
and deleting them. Now we have finished
making the pattern. We can export this to PDF documents so that
we can print it out. Temporarily, delete
the full patents. We can Export one half pattern. I would save my file before
deleting the full patterns. So I can come to it at
a later point in time. Select the half Patterns and click File export, Adobe PDF. I really give it a
name and click Save. In the Export PDF up. I will check to export all
lines suggests same elements, graphic lines, and
internal lines. Make sure that the
scale is at 100%, but 30 MM margins on all sides. Click Okay, to export a
patent as a PDF document. Now, I have got my baton exported with all
the essential lines. In this lesson, we
saw how we can get Usable Patterns out of Clo3d. We discussed how we can
add seam allowances, not just the advantages of
printing symmetric patterns. In the next lesson, we will see how to make use of this pattern
9. How To Use The Pattern To Make A Garment: This lesson, Let's
see how we can print and new cisplatin
to make a comment. Since this is a large document, you can print this
using an A1 printer. But if you don't
have access to one, you can print this on
multiple a4 papers. I styles and assembly together
like a zigzag person. This process may seem complex, but it's very simply to execute. Let's see how we can do is press Control P to bring
different settings. Select the poster option under the page sizing and handling. Make sure that the
scale is set to 100%. Click on the labels and
the cut marks checkbox. Choose the page orientation. Here. I will go with portrait. You can see the number of pages displayed on the top here. We can now click on printer. Once we have all the
printed pages 3D, you can find the cut
marks as crosshairs and the labels that we select it in different settings on
the top-left corner. Now, I will arrange the
pages as per the labeling. The labels define the rows and
columns, the printed page. Next step, the beat to cut on the cut lines and glue
the pieces together. For cutting and gluing. I'm using the cross has
as my guide and I'm just making sure that the cross has matched between
different sheets. You can also use any other
organ to joining methods. As per your convenience. I will now cut on the cut
lines to get my back-end. Now we have got
this pattern ready. At this stage, we can mark any additional details
like partnering, Center for Size, date at
which this pattern was made. These additional
labels will help us understand and reuses
pattern in the future. The next step will be to transfer this to a
piece of fabric, fold a piece of
fabric into three, with the fault lines on the edge and the open edge in
the middle facing you. I will place the pattern on the Fabric matching
the Center for line. Using a marker, I will trace the lines from the
pattern to the fabric. I will make sure that all
the lines get traced, including the notches
and the same elements is we can now cut the
fabric on the trace lines. I will open default after cutting to relieve
the other half. Using the same technique, he will cut the back side. Also. We have transferred this
pattern to the next lesson. Let's see how it can
sue and make a Garment
10. Sewing & Finishing The Garment: This lesson we will discuss how to sue and finish the garment. We will be suing the dad's first one to the
site and showed us. Then we would finish
the bottom with the hand and finally
finish the neck. And I'm pulling
with a bi-stable. The first step will be
stitching different dots. I'm just pinching the
dots together like this. I think making stitches on
these lines shown here. I didn't make sure the points
match with each other. And there's some
middle line like this. Using a bank, I will secure both the surfaces
Fabric in place. On the backside, I will fall deduct so we can
see it together. Similarly, I will use a pen
to hold the fabric in place. I'll be making stitches. On these lines shown here. Repeat the same
process on the other. Now, eyelids teach
the dots together. After sewing the dad, he pressed the fabric before
you move on to the next day, he pressing after small, successful steps in Sewing
will give you a finished look. In the next steps we will
be soon sites shoulders. Using fancy by this technique, the raw edges will be completely enclosed in a neat
double seen that is more durable it this
way you also don't have to use a surgeon or an
overlap machines. Yet. You wouldn't have the
law edges finished. Now, I will lay the wrong
side of the fabric pieces on top of each other and use
Pins to secure them in place. You can see the
stitch plan on how we can go up or stitching
the pieces together. After we joined the
pieces together, we can trim off some x's Fabric closer to the stitch line. Now, we can flip them inside out and stitch the
edges together, keeping the correct
sides facing each other. I haven't removed the threats that are sticking
out from the ends. Me know how clean and
finished French sees. If you have a surgeon, you Approach to
stay differently. We can want to closing the
bottom with a double fold. The edges 400 twice so that the raw edges are
completely consumed. This is considered a
most durable type of 14, bottom handy did I will fold the fabric twice from
the bottom to about ten. Mm. This is why we had UNSC my
loans of grantee MM, earlier. To get a better Finishing, I will use Pins to call
defaults in place. You can see the stitch
lines as shown here. Now we have stitch,
the back, dots, friend dots, sites,
shoulders, and the bottom. That's the final
step of Finishing. We can finish the law
edges of the hormone. There are various ways and
methods to approach this. Free to choose your own
every finish the neck. And I'm holding that
the bites deep. I just need to attach
this deep along the row, seems to finish them. I'm staffing to
delay and opening the past and placing the end of the bias tape on the
midline of the neck. The credit side of the
bias tape should be facing the wrong side of
the top as shown here. Now, I will make stitches
on the lines shown here. And just hold the by state can make Simulate stitches
on the other side. And I will just continue
attaching the by state all around the neck using
these same techniques. I have finished the
neck and the arm holds. This gives very good Finishing
my closing the raw edges. I will now flip
my dog and say it out to relieve the
correct side of the top. I have me and finished this
canker that fits perfectly. In this lesson, we
approached Sewing a Garment using simple
techniques such as dots, Francine, devil for
him, and bias binding. Feel free to share your preferred methods that you have used in the discussions
11. Conclusion: We have come to the
end of this class. Let me know which
lessons helped you along your sewing journey and what techniques you use to
complete sewing your garment. If you have any
feedback on my class, please feel free to use
the review section. Sharing your feedback
and experiences. They helped me to me
grow my future classes. Thank you and cheers.
