Skillshare class where you will learn a fast-paced,
high-energy DJ mix. [MUSIC] You will learn
how to mix together five house tracks
in just 5 minutes. This class is a
great way for you to practice your DJ skills, learned some new techniques, and have fun all
at the same time. But those that haven't
met me before, My name is DJ Jack
Butler and I am an international
professional DJ. I have digit all
around the world, including places such as Thailand, Australia,
France, Greece, and the UK and in
those locations, I have DJed in venues
such as clubs, bars, pool parties, both
parties and festivals. I have a huge range of DJ experience and in
this Skillshare class, I'm going to teach you how to do a five-minute house DJ mix using some of the techniques that
I have used when I DJ life. All the tracks that are
used in this class are available for you to download
for free in the resources. This means you get to join in and follow along step-by-step and learn the exact
same DJ mix as I do with the exact same tracks. In the next video, I
will demonstrate to you the exact DJ mix that
you will be learning. Then in the following
videos after that, I'll walk you through
step-by-step how to prepare each individual
track ready for the DJ mix, I will show you
exactly what you need to set all of your hot cues, went to press your hot cues, then at the end of each video, we will practice
how to mix between the two tracks smoothly
using the cross-border. Then once we've prepared all of the tracks and practice mixing
with them individually, I will then go ahead
and do the full mix once again but this time, you should be able
to join in and do the exact same DJ
mix yourself too. You don't need to be an
expert to do this class as I'll walk you
through step-by-step, everything you need to know and everything you need to do. But it does help if you have some basic DJ knowledge and you understand what all
the buttons and dials do on your DJ controller. If you are a complete beginner
and you want to learn the full basics and
fundamentals of deejaying, you can check out
my full DJ course called the complete DJ
course for beginners, which teaches you all the
techniques and fundamentals you need to know to DJ
from start to finish. That'd be said, if you want to learn how to do a fast-paced, high-energy house DJ mix, then let's dive straight into
it and watch the full mix that we are going to learn in the next video. See you there.
2. DJ Mix Demonstration: In this video, I'm going
to quickly demonstrate to you the exact DJ mix that
you will be learning. I'm going to demonstrate
to you the full mix first, and then in each video after, I will show you
exactly how to prepare each individual track to be able to do this exact same DJ mix. Once we've gone through, and prepared each individual track, we will then do the full DJ
mix again together at the end where you will then be
able to join in and do the exact same DJ mix yourself, I hope you enjoy it. [MUSIC]
3. Rekordbox - Quick Set Up: In this video, I'm
quickly going to go through the
settings you need when using Rekordbox to be able to
do this DJ mix effectively. It makes it a lot easier if we both have the same settings as each other and the
correct settings to be able to do this
type of mixing. If you already have
these settings on that I'm going to show
you, that's great, but if not, you may
just need to quickly change your settings to match
the ones that I'm using. Firstly, we just need to go to the Settings cog at the top
and open up the settings. Then the first thing
we need to do is go to View and then scroll down
until you see waveform. Then just when we
get to Waveform, we need to make sure
that the color is ticked as RGB for red, green, and blue, and that we also have Full Waveform selected as well. Then we need to go to the Controller tab and
then select the Mixer tab. From here we just need
to make sure that the cross fader curve is in the center so it looks
like this one here. Then under the Controller tab, we just need to go
to the tab that says Others and then from here, what I advice is to make
sure that the jump before reaching the next beat
box is not selected. As standard, it'll
have this as a tick, but for this one
we're just going to have it not selected. Then we need to make sure that all of these boxes here say enable and the boxes on the values all have
the Number 1 in there. Some some of these may be set to half a beat or
a quarter beat, but we just need to make
sure that they all have the one value in
these boxes here. Then we can just go ahead
and exit the settings. Now on the far left-hand side
of the waveform at the top, we'll have a little arrow box. If we select that, it will allow you to zoom
in and out of the waveform. What we need to do is just zoom all the way out on the waveform. Then when we're actually
doing the mixes, we want to make sure
that both these Q's here are red and activated. This Q here, if it's
not selected in red, just make sure that that
Q is red and the one on the opposite side is
also red and activated. This is just to make sure that Quantize is activated
when you're mixing, and what this will do is make
sure that when you're using your hot cues they stay
in time with the track. Also when mixing, we just
need to make sure that beat sync is enabled
on both tracks. You should be able to
have a Sync button on your DJ controller, you just got to make sure
that that is lit up and activated when you're
doing your DJ mixes. What this will do
is make sure that your beats snap in
time with each other, so both tracks are
at the same time when you're doing your DJ mixes. Now, during these tutorials, we will be using a
function called beat jump. If you're not sure how to use
this on your DJ controller, there is a tab on
each deck here on the DJ software
that you can do a drop-down just here and find the beat jump function
just on your software, select that, and the main one we're going to be
using is the 32-bit. What this does is it jumps forward and backwards
in the track 32 beats. If you don't have that on
your DJ controller beat jump, you can just find it
here on your software. Now that we have all
the settings setup correctly for this DJ mix, we're going to move on
and prepare the tracks. See you in the next video.
4. Serato - Quick Set Up: In this video, I'm
quickly going to go through the
settings you will need when using Serato to be able to do this DJ mix effectively. It makes it a lot easier if we both have the same
settings as each other and the correct
settings to be able to do this type of mixing. If you already have
these settings that I'm going to show you
on, that's great. But if not, you may just
need to quickly change your settings to
match the ones that I'm using for this mix. What we need to do is just go to the Settings Cog in the
top right-hand corner, and then go to the
DJ Preferences tab. From here, we just
need to make sure that Enable Hot Cues is selected on, the Show Beat Jump Controls
is also selected on, and the Quantize Value
is set to one Beat. In the Song Load section, we just need to
make sure we have Play from Start is selected on, but also we need Play from First hot Cue Point
also selected on. What that will do
is when you load a song with the Hot Cue it will move the track
straight away to the first hot cue of that track. That will come in handy
throughout this mix. Then on Sync Mode, we just need to make sure
that Smart Sync is selected. Once we've done that, we
can exit the settings. Throughout these
mixed tutorials, we will be using the
beat jump function. Most DJ controllers do have the beat jump function
on them, but if not, you may need to use the
software and you'll find the beat jump
functions just here. It will be the second lots of
numbers on the second line. The main one we'll be
using is the Number 32. What this does is it
jumps forwards and backwards in the Track 32 beats. When we are doing the DJ mixes, we want to make sure that
both tracks are synced on. When we're pressing
play on the next track, we want to make sure that
it has the gray sync. This means that the
sync button is armed. When it is gray, when you
press play on the next track, it will snap the beats
in time together. If it is in blue or
yellow, it won't do that. When using the beat sync, you want to make sure that the
track that you're going to play next is selected gray. Also, when doing the
mixes in these tutorials, you want to make sure that
the quantize function is on. Up here in the top
left-hand corner, there's a little Q button. If we select that, we need to make sure it's highlighted blue. This means that
quantize is activated. What quantize does is when
you're using your hot cues it keeps the tracks in time so that when you're
using the hot cues, the tracks don't go out
of time with each other. Unless they're on the
full waveform here, you can zoom in and out of this waveform all the way
in and all the way out. The best view that I have
found for the mixes is to zoom all the way out and then
go back in once more. I find this view of the waveform most effective for
this type of mixing. Now we have all the
settings ready. We can move on to the next
video and prepare the tracks. See you in next video.
5. Playlist Preparation: In this video, we're going to put all the tracks together in a playlist and then put them in the correct order
ready for the DJ mix. If you haven't done so already, you will need to download all the tracks that we
are going to be using from the resources
which you'll be able to find somewhere
around this video. They will either be below the video or at the
side of this video, depending on which platform
you're watching on. Once you have
downloaded the tracks, you will need to
access your files on your laptop via the DJ software. You can do this by going to the Explorer tab on the
left-hand side on the library, and then finding your music that you've downloaded
from there, or by going to the File tab
at the top of the library in Serato and finding the
music tracks from there. For example here, the tracks that I've downloaded have gone into this folder that
says House- Mix With Me. If I just click that folder, I can see all the tracks here. Once we have found where
the downloaded tracks are, we will need to put them
in a separate playlist on the DJ software. We can do this by scrolling up on the left-hand
side and clicking the plus icon on the right-hand side
of the Playlists tab. We're just going to
name the playlist. Then all you need to
do is drag and drop them tracks into
the new playlist. Then what we'll need to
do is make sure that we have the right column
showing on the library. We just need to
make sure we have at least these two
columns showing, and they are the track title
and the comments columns. If you do have any
other columns, that's fine as long
as you make sure you have at least these two columns. You can do this
by right-clicking the columns tabs and then selecting which columns
that you want to show. As you can see here now, we have the track title and
comments column. Once we've done that,
we are now going to put the tracks into
the correct order, ready for the DJ mix. The track that's
going to be first is going to be the
track Billy Jean, and in the comments, we just want to add a 01. Then on the track
Push the Feeling On, we want to add 02 in the comments as this is going to be the second
track we're playing. Then the track Last Night
a DJ Saved My Life, we're going to put
03 in the comments. Then the track
Needing You is going to be 04 in the comments. Then the track Pump Up the
Jam is going to be 05. And last track Ateriminia
is going to be 06. Then what we can do is click
the comments title bar, until it puts them
in ascending order. I'm just going to
click comments. Then it puts them in ascending order in the numbers
that we've put. This means now we
can work from top to bottom when we're
doing our DJ mix. Once we have our tracks in our playlist and
in numbered order, we can now move onto
the next video and start preparing the
individual tracks. See you in the next video.
6. Track 1 Preparation: In this video, we're
going to prepare the first track in the DJ mix. On the left-hand side on Deck 1, we have the track Billie
Jean ready to prepare. In this DJ mix, we'll
mainly be using hot cues to jump to different
sections of the track. When prepared
correctly, hot cues are very simple but effective way
to manipulate your tracks. With hot cues, you can easily jump to different
sections of the track and play the
sections you want to play at the exact time
you want to play them. What we will ultimately be doing in this DJ mix is creating a very sharp version
of each track that will only
consist of the key, most energetic parts of the
track that we want to play. We will be jumping to
a different part of the track every phrase
or every two phrases, and also only mixing over the space of one or two phrases. This way, the mix will move very fast through the tracks, and it will keep
the energy high and entertaining throughout the mix as there will always
be something going on and changing
for the audience. If you are unsure
what a phrase is, a phrase consists of 32 beats. At the start of a
phrase is generally where significant changes
happen in the track, for example, where sounds
will be added or taken away. Now because
significant changes in a track happen at the
start of a phrase, this is where we'll be
setting our hot cues so the track changes in time
with its natural structure. If you want to learn
more about phrases, or still don't fully
understand them, after this DJ mix, you can always check
out my full DJ course called The Complete DJ
Course For Beginners, which explains to
you everything you need to know to learn how to DJ. In each track preparation video, we will be setting hot cues
in the correct places, color-coding the hot cues, and also making notes
on the hot cues. This is to let us
know what actions we should be doing at each
point in the track. This should make it a lot easier for us to perform the DJ mix, as the hot cues just tell us
exactly what we need to do. Once we have each track
correctly prepared, we can then go and do the whole DJ mix at the end
of the course together. That being said, let's start preparing the first
track on the left. The first hot cue that
we're going to set on hot cue A is going to be 16 beats before the
baseline comes in, and this is going to
be on bar number 13.1. I'm just going to
quickly find that. As the track goes red here, that will be the start
of the baseline. Let's have a listen. [MUSIC] I'm just going to put the playhead at the start of the baseline and then jump
back 16 beats using beat jump. This time, we're
not jumping back one full phrase of 32 beats, but just 16 beats. This is where our first
hot cue is going to be set at bar number 13.1, and you can see that
just at the top of the extended wave form, this is where we're going to
start our track in our mix. What I'm going to
do on the hot cue here is leave the color green. But in the comments, just add a comment
saying start mix. Now we know this
is the hot cue to press to start the mix. The second hot cue
we're going to set is at the start
of the baseline. What we can do is use
beat jump again to jump forward to 16 beats back to
the start of the baseline. As you can see here, this
is at bar number 17.1. We're going to set our
second hot cue just here. But this time we're
going to change the color of the hot cue to blue and also add in the comments jump to C. This is because at
this point in the track, we're going to jump to hot cue C which we're going to set next. Hot cue C is going
to be set up at 16 beats before the break. What I'm going to do is
find the break where the red waveform ends. [MUSIC] Just there where the vocals come in and
the baseline comes out. This is the start of the break. What I'm going to do is use beat jump to jump back 16 beats. As you can see, that's
at bar number 37.1, and we're going to set our
next hot cue just here. We're going to leave
this color green, but change the comments to press just so we know that this is the hot cue to press
when it gets too hot cue B. Now the reason why we're
doing this is because 16 beats plus 16 beats
equals one phrase. Note the start of our
track until it gets to the breakdown should
total up to one phrase, but it's got half
of just percussion , then half baseline, and then naturally
going into the break, so let's have a listen to this. I'm going to start the
track with hot cue A, [MUSIC] and then just as
it gets to hot cue B, I'm going to press hot cue C, [MUSIC] then the
baseline comes in. But after 16 beats, it goes naturally
into the break. [MUSIC] That would be a total of one phrase
before the break comes in and that's how we're
going to start our mix. It's not too long, it keeps the audience's attention
and constantly changing, but still in time with this
track's natural structure. Now, the next hot cue
we're going to set, which is going to be hot cue D, is going to be on the
drop of the track. The drop is the first
beat of the chorus. As you can see on
the waveform here, it changes color again
and goes back to red. This should be the drop,
so let's have a listen. [MUSIC] What we're going to do is set our next hot cue right on that first
beat of the chorus. As you can see, that's going
to be bar number 61.1. But this time on this hot cue, we're going to change
the color to blue again, and then in the comments, we're going to add jump to E. At this point in the track, we're not going to
let that drop happen, we're going to jump to a
different part of a track. Hot cue E is going to be
two phrases after the drop, and this is where the
melody comes in as well. As you can hear on this drop is just a baseline.
Have a listen again. [MUSIC] We're going to jump forward two phrases
using beat jump. That's 32 beats twice; 1,2, and we're going to set
our hot cue here on hot cue E. We're going to keep the color green and
change the comment to press so we know this is
the hot cue to press. If you listen to this
point in the track, you'll hear the melody
come in as well. [MUSIC] We're going to replace the drop of the
track with this part. Let's have a listen to that. I'm going to put it
just before the drop, and then when it gets to hot cue D where it
says jumped to E, we're going to press hot
cue E. Let's have a listen. [MUSIC] Are you ready? One, two, three, four. [MUSIC] Hopefully you agree that's a bit more of
an entertaining drop when we're doing
this kind of mix. The next hot cue
we're going to set on hot cue F is going to
be one phrase after our new drop where
we've just set hot cue E. I'm going to wind it back a few beats
back to hot cue E, and then from here,
I'm going to use beat jump to jump
forward 32 beats. This is going to be
our next hot cue, so I'm going to press
the next hot cue, which is hot cue F and this time I'm going to
right-click the hot cue, change the color to blue, and then change the
comments to mix out. It's at this point in the track where
we're going to start the next track and do the
mix over to the next track. Throughout this DJ mix, you'll notice that we are using two different colors
for the hot cues. This is so that it
will make it easier for us when doing the DJ mix. The blue color hot cues
means at this point, you will need to do an action, and the action is usually to press the next green hot cue. The green hot cues are the hot cues that
you need to press. For example, you can see
here, our hot cue B, it says jump to C and
you press hot cue C, and then when it gets
the next blue one, hot cue E, that
means you have to press hot cue E. It will become more clear and
easier to understand the colors as we go through
the tracks and prepare them. I've also made it
so the hot cues go in order from left to right, making it easier to follow
along with the DJ mix. You just have to
start with hot cue A, then to B, then C, then D, then E, then F, and then on to the next track starting again from hot cue A. Also as you can see, to
make it even easier, we have also included
what to do in the comments so you can read the hot cue
for instructions. What I'm going to
do now is quickly go through this fast track,
pressing the hot cues. I'll talk you through it as well so you can follow along, and you should understand
what we're doing. For this to be successful, we want to make sure that we
have the Quantize activated, which is the read cue here, and this will help the
hot cue stay in time with the track. Let's have a listen. I'm going to start
first with hot cue A. [MUSIC] Then after 16 beats, when it gets to hot cue B, press the next green one, which is hot cue C. [MUSIC] Then it will go
into the first break. [MUSIC] Whenever
this break play, this should be entertaining enough to keep the
audience's attention, [MUSIC] then that just
as it gets to the drop, [MUSIC] as you can see, we have to press hot cue
E. Four beats before that, I'm just going to get ready. [MUSIC] It's coming out now; one, two, three. [MUSIC] There you have the different drop that
has the melody as well, which is a bit
more entertaining. [MUSIC] As you can see here, our hot cue F is coming up, and this is where we press the next track to start mixing, which is what we're
going to prepare next. I hope that's easy
to understand. The next few videos are
going to be a little quicker now we
understand the system. Now we have the first
track prepared, let's move on to the
next video and get the second track prepared.
See you in the next video.
7. Track 2 Preparation: In this video, we're going
to prepare the second track, ready for the DJ mix. As you can see here now, on the right-hand side on deck 2, we have the track
Push The Feeling On. The first hot cue
we're going to sit on this track on hot cue A is going to be very easy because it's at the very
start of the track. Right here at bar number 1.1, we're going to set
our first hot cue, and on this hot cue here, we're going to leave
it the color green because we're going
to press this one, but we're going to change
the comments to mix in. It's at this point
the track we're mixing it in over the top of
the last track, Billy Jean. The next hot cue we're
going to set hot cue B is going to be one phrase
after this one. Using beat jump, we're going
to jump forward 32 beats. This is where we're going
to set our second hot cue. This is going to be
at bar number 9.1. From here, we're going
to change the color from green to blue. Then adding the
comments jump to C. Then what hot cue C is going to be at the
start of the chorus. This is where we're
going to jump to, and it's going to
be bar number 49.1. We just need to find this. It's just here after
this light blue section. This is where the chorus
starts and this is where we're going to put the hot
cue. Let's have a listen. [MUSIC] This point here, 49.1, that we're going to set the next hot cue and jump to
when we're doing the mix. We're going to leave
this the color green. Then in the comments,
put the words press. At this stage when
we're doing the mix, we're going to have
to be pretty quick because at the end of the mix, we're going to press
the hot cue as well. But before I do the mix, I'm
just going to let you have a listen to this to see
what it sounds like. [MUSIC] Obviously got
some vocals there, when it gets to the beat, [MUSIC] we're going
to press it so the chorus comes in with the baselines and
melodies as well. The last talk you on this
track is going to be hot cue D, the fourth hot cue, and this is going to
be a bar number 65.1, and this is two phrases
after the drop. We're going to wind
this back to hot cue C. We're going to jump
forward to phrases from here. Using beat jump 32 beats forward once and twice and there
you can see we're at 65.1. This is going to be
where we're going to set our next hot cue. On this hot cue now, we're
going to change the color to blue and then change the
comments to mix out. At this point, we're
going to mix out of the track and into
the next track. What I want to do now is
show you the mix out of Billy Jean into Push
The Feeling On and they show you how we're going to jump through the track, Push The Feeling On as well as
I'll talk you through it. The first option I'm
going to show you on how to mix the
tracks together in this DJ mix is a very basic but very
effective way of mixing. All we're going to do is slowly
move the crossfader from one track over to the other track over the
space of one phrase. The crossfader starts off completely all the
way over to one side, the side of the track that
is currently playing. Then over the space
of one phrase, we are slowly going to move
it across to the other side. By the end of the phrase, it has completely
switched sides. When using this technique, the smoother, the better. Try not to rush it
and take your time. Let's have a go at the mix. Note remember to have beat
sync on, on both tracks. That both tracks are at
the same speed and so that the track snapped together in time with each other
when you press play. Let's put the crossfader all the way over to the left-hand side. I'm going to start the track, Billy Jean just at the
end. Let's have a listen. [MUSIC] As we know here, when it gets to hot cue A, we're going to mix out and press "Hot Cue A"
on the next track, 3, 2, 1. Slowly move the
crossfader across. We're going to do
it over one phrase. I'm going to get to hot cue B, we're going to
press "Hot Cue C". [MUSIC] That's the basic way of how we're going to
do that mix we have to remember to be ready
to press "Hot Cue C". [MUSIC] That's the part where we're going to
start the next track which we have not yet prepared. That's the first
option of how to mix. We're just going to use the
crossfader by itself to move across very slowly
over one phrase. Now another way
we can do this to make it a little
smoother if you are feeling confident enough is
to use the equalizer dials. What you can do on the track
that is being mixed out of, is turns the
low-frequency equalizer down and this will
cut the baseline. What this will do is have
more of an impact for the track coming in next as
the baseline drops on this. I'm going to quickly
talk you through that mix and we can use
this style of mixing with the low-frequency
equalizers throughout the whole DJ mix. If you feel confident
enough to use the crossfader and the
low-frequency equalizers. Let's quickly have a
listen to that mix. [MUSIC] We're going
to press "Hot Cue A". When it gets to hot
cue F just again. But then when we move
the crossfader across, we're going to use the
both frequency equalizers. I want to turn the
baseline down on the track Billy Jean
at the same time. You can hear it crossing over, so when the next track comes in, it sounds a lot better. [MUSIC] That's just another a
little more advanced way of how to do the mix is turn the baseline down on the track
that you're mixing out of. But if you're not
feeling confident enough to do that just yet, moving the crossfader from
left to right or right to left over one phrase
should be just fine. Now that's track 2 prepared, let's move on to the next
video and prepare track 3.
8. Track 3 Preparation: In this video, we're
going to prepare the third track of the DJ mix. Now, on the left-hand
side on Deck 1, we have the track Last
Night A DJ Saved My Life. The first hot cue we're
going to set, hot cue A, is going to be one
phrase before the break. What it looks like here on
the track is the intro, a bit of baseline, and then break 1 starts here.
Let's have a listen. [MUSIC] Just there where
the vocal comes in, that should be the
start of Break 1. I'm just going to move the
play head back slightly. [MUSIC] Then what we're going
to do is jump backwards using beat jump 32 beats. This is where our first hot
cue is going to be set, at Bar number 25.1. We're going to leave the
color of this one green. Then right-click, add comment, and we're going to put mix in. This is the point
we're going to mix in this track into the last track. Now, the second hot cue we're
going to set, hot cue B, is going to be at one
phrase into the break. We're going to jump forward
32 beats using beat jump. This takes us back to
the start of the break. Then we're going to jump
forward another 32 beats. This is where our next hot
cue is going to be set, so hot cue B. This is at bar number 41.1. I'm going to change the color to blue and then add in
the comments jump to C. Then hot cue C is going to be one
phrase from here, and that is also going to be
one phrase before the drop. I'm going to use beat jump
again, 32 beats forward. This is where we're going
to set our next hot cue. This is at bar number 49.1. We're going to leave
this one green and change the comments to press. The reason why we're
doing this is just to speed up the process
of the break. Instead of the break here
being three phrases in total, it's only going to be two. It keeps it a bit more
entertaining and a bit more fast-paced. Let's have
a listen to this. [MUSIC] When it
gets to hot cue B, we're going to press hot cue C, 1, 2, 3, 4. Then it starts the
build-up to the drop. As you can hear there, because we did it at the
start of the phrases, the jump between the hot cues is very smooth and effortless. Now, the next hot cue
we're going to set on hot cue D is going to be
one phrase after the drop. I'm just going to
quickly find the drop. I'm going to spin it forward to where the best line
comes in there. [MUSIC] As we can hear that, that is the start of the chorus, so that's the drop
of the chorus. We're going to jump forward
32 beats, one phrase. Now, instead of setting
it here at 65.1, we're going to go
back four beats. I'm going to wind this
track back four beats. Now we should be on bar 64.1. This is actually
where we're going to set our next hot cue. I'll explain why in a minute. There on 64.1, we're going
to change the color to it, on hot cue D, to blue, and then change the
comments to jump to E. At this point in the track, we're going to jump
to the next hot cue, hot cue E, which is going to be set two phrases from here. I want to use beat jump, jump
forward two phrases, 1, 2. This is going to be
bar number 80.1. I'm going to set
the hot cue there, leave it the color green, but add in the comment, press. Now, if you listen to
this, it's four beats before the start of
the next phrase. [MUSIC] But what you can also hear is the vocal going over the start
of that phrase. It starts just before the
phrase and carries on over it. If you were to jump to
the start of the phrase, [MUSIC] just here
using our hot cues, you'd hear only half the vocal. [MUSIC] This is why
on both of them hot cues there are
four beats earlier. Now it should sound like this. I'm going to put it
just before hot cue D. [MUSIC] So you're actually pressing the hot cue
a little earlier, 2, 3, 4. Just so that it
doesn't sound out of time with the tracks
natural structure. It still fits,
you're just doing it four beats earlier to
fit that vocal in. Now, our last hot
cue on this track, hot cue F is going to be two phrases before
the next break, and this is bar number 81.1. If I'm just going to
wind it back slightly, [MUSIC] bar number 81.1
is actually just here. I'm going to set
the hot cue here and then change
the color to blue. This is where we're going
to start mixing out. When we are doing the DJ mix, this section here
is going to be very fast and we've got to be ready
to press the next track. I'll have to jump to hot cue E. Then as soon as it
gets to the next one, same mix out, we're going to have to start the next track. But I'll show you how to
do that in the next video. What I'm going to do now is
show you the mix out to Push the Feeling On into Last
Night a DJ Saved My Life, and then talk you through
how we're going to jump through that track
using the hot cues. With this one, I am going to use the low-frequency
equalizers. But remember you don't have to use them if you're
not ready for it. You can just move the
crossfader across over one phrase and it'll still
have a smooth transition. But just to avoid any
baseline clashes, I want to switch the
low-frequency equalizers in the middle of the mix. If you are unsure on how to use the low-frequency equalizers
after this DJ mix, you can check out
my full DJ course called the complete DJ
course for beginners, that explains exactly how to use the equalizers when
you are mixing. I'm just going to put it
before the last hot cue here on Push the Feeling On
and I'll talk you through it. Cross fade it over to
the right-hand side, both tracks of beats synced up. We have Quantize activated
as well. Let's go. [MUSIC] First time we had set the low-frequency
equalizer down, on the next track when
it gets to hot cue D, I press hot cue A. 1, 2, 3, 4, move the crossfader
to the center, then switch the baselines, then push it all the way across. When it gets to hot cue B, I'm going to press hot cue C, just to make that break
a little shorter, 1, 2, 3, 4. Now, it starts building
up to the drop. Just making that track a little faster, and a little punchier. Then here we can press
the horn as well. From there we just press the
sampler and hit the horn. If you're not sure how
to do that, you can check the full course. When it gets to hot cue D here, it's a little early, press the next hot cue, and it'll jump to that
part of the track. It's at this point now
we'll be mixing out of it. As you can hear that, we move
fast through that track. But if you follow the steps,
and follow the colors, and move left to right, it should be easier than
you think to perform. That's Track 3 prepared, now what we're going to
do is prepare Track 4. I'll see you in the next video.
9. Track 4 Preparation: In this video, we're
going to prepare the fourth track of the DJ mix. Now, on the right-hand
side on deck 2, we have the track needing you. The first hot cue
we're going to set on this track is going to be two phrases before the
drop of the chorus. What we're going to do, is
find the drop of the chorus. We can see here the intro, then break one, and then this should be the drop at the core is just here. Let's have a listen
and check [MUSIC] I'm just going to wind that back [MUSIC] Adjust here is
the drop of the chorus, and what we're going
to do is jump back two phrases using beat jump. So 32 beats back, 1, 2. Just here at band number 57.1 is where we went to
set our first hot cue. In this one we're going
to leave the color green, but change the
comments to Mix In. But we're not just going
to put it as mixed in, we're also going to put 2P. On this note here now, it will say Mix In 2P, and the 2P stands
for two phrases. This mix now is going to be slightly longer than
the previous ones. Instead of moving the cross
fader across over one phrase, we're going to do it
over two phrases. It's a longer, smoother,
more gradual mix. If you did want to
make an extra notes on the track when
mixing it out of, here where it says mix
out on hot cue F. You can also add if you want to, 2P. You know that you're
mixing goes over two phrases as well. Now, it says mix out
2P and mixing 2P. I'm going to show you
how to do that mix at the end of this
video as well. It sounds good with
the track building up, and the vocals of the track last night at DJ, saved my life. Have a listen to that later. Now, the second hot cue beat is going to be one
phrase after the drop. Let's find the drop again. We can do this by
jumping forward two phrases using
beat jump 1, 2. We're back here at the drop. Now, we're going to push it
forward one more phrase. This is a bar number 81.1. Let's set the next hot
cue here, hot cue B. We want to change the color to blue and then change the
comments to jump to seat. During this track, we're
going to let it drop. Then one phrase after the drop is when
we're going to move to a different part of the track when it gets too hot cue b. Hot cue C is going to be one phrase after
the second drop. This is when the vocals
come in on the track. We need to find where
the second drop is, which we can see here break 2 going into the second chorus. Let's have a listen [MUSIC] Just here, I'm going
to wind it back. [MUSIC] Right on that
drop, we're going to move forward one phrase
using beat jump. Just here at band number 161.11. We're going to set
our next hot cue. This one is going
to be colored green and comments are
going to be press. During this transition
between the hot cues, you'll hear it go from
no vocals to vocals. Let's have a listen [MUSIC] Our next hot cue, hot cue
D that we're going to set, it's going to be one phrase after hot cue C. Let's wind this back [MUSIC] Now, what we're going to
do is use beat jump, jump forward 32 beats and
set the next hot cue. This is going to be at 169.11 ,and we wanted to change
it to blue and then change the comments to jump to E. Then hot cue E is going to be at the
first phrase of the outro, and that's going to be bar
number 185.11, so 185.1. Here's the, here's
the little break. It should be just at
the start of this [MUSIC] Just here at 185.1 is where we're going
to set our next hot cue. This is going to stay
the color green. Then we're going to
add the comment press. This is going to be
the start of the outro of the track where it
starts to wind down. Then the next hot cue, hot cue F is going to be one
phrase after this, using beat jump, jump
forward 32 beats. This is going to be
bar number193.1. Press the hot cue, change
the color to blue. Then here we're
going to mix out. I'm going to change the
comment to mix out. There we have it. We have
the next track setup, the track needing you
with all the hot cues. I'm going to show you how
to mix out of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life and into
the new track Needing You, and then jumped through
the track Needing You as talking you through it. On this one, I am
going to slightly use the equalizer as well, the low-frequency
equalizer to mix out of the track Last
Night A DJ Saved My Life. But remember this mix is over two phrases and you'll
hear why in a second. What I'm going to do is
start it just before hot cue D. You can
see me jump to hot cue E and then
start the other tracks straight away at hot cue
A. Let's have a listen. Cross fader over to
the left-hand side. Both tracks of beats inked up, quantizes on, let's go. [MUSIC] As it gets
too hot cue D, I'm going to press hot
cue E and I get ready to press hot cue A
on the next track. You can see that
it is quite quick. We can do it if you're ready. Slowly fade and then extract all the two phrases
so it's a bit longer. Just slowly start taking
it at night [MUSIC] Then when it gets too hot cue B, well press hot cue C. Just to jump through the
trunk a little quicker, 1, 2, 3, 4. Then when it gets so hot cue D, press the next green
hot cue, hot cue A. 1, 2, 3, 4. [inaudible]
slowly start fading. But we're not going to
make sure it's a bit until the next hot cue and this is where we progress to
the next track on hot cue A. [MUSIC] That's where
we'll mix out of it. That's now the fourth
track prepared for us. I'm going to move
on to track five in the next video.
See you there.
10. Track 5 Preparation: In this video, we're
going to prepare the fifth track of the DJ mix. This time on the
left-hand side on deck 1, we have the track
Pump Up The Jam. Now, this one's going to
be a little quicker as we only need to set two
hot cues on this track. The first hop cue, hot cue A, is going to be set one phrase before the vocal comes
in on the track, which is at bar number 81.1. This is around the middle
of the track here. I'm just going to wind
this back slightly. Just here is the
bar number 81.1, right in the middle of the track so if
you can find that, and then set the hot
first hot cue just here. We're going to leave
this color green, and then in the
comments, add mix in. Now, this track is
only going to be mixed in all but one phrase, so we don't necessarily need a note to say about the
phrases on this one. Then the next hot
cue is going to be one phrase before the drop, and this is bar number 105.1. It looks like here
is going to be a drop in the track where
we want to be using. Let's have a listen.
[MUSIC] Just now going to wind it back. That is the drop of the track. We're going to jump backwards
32 beats using beat jump. This is where we're going to
set our second hot cue and the last hot cue at 105.1. We're going to change
the color here to blue, and then on the
comments, say mix out. This is just going to be a quick transition through this track, but what I'll do now is I'll
show you how to mix out of the track needing new and into
the track Pump Up The Jam. Once again, I am going to use low-frequency
equalizers to switch the bases over halfway through the mix as I'm moving
the crossfader across. But if you don't want to that, you can just move the crossfader from one side to another
over one phrase, this time on the mix. We're going to start
with the crossfader all the way over to
the right-hand side. Firstly, what I'm
going to do is turn the low-frequency equalizer down on the track I'm
going to mix in next. This one's going to
be a little quicker. I'm going to move the
crossfader to the center, switch the low-frequency
equalizers and then move it across
over to the left-hand side. Let's have a listen to that mix. [MUSIC] When it gets
to the next hot cue, I'm going to start
the new track, 1, 2, 3, 4. Crossfader in the center. Switch the bases. Push it all the way over just as the ball goes
in on the track. Then what we're going
to do this track is when it gets too hot cue B, start the new one that we're
going to prefer just here. This is going to be a
build-up to the track. What we're going to do to mix over the track at this point, so we'll swap the drop
with another track's drop. Just there is a track drop. We're going to switch it and
play another track's drop. I'm going to show
you how to prepare that track in the next
video. See you there.
11. Track 6 Preparation: In this video, I'm going to show you how to prepare
the last track, Track 6 for this DJ mix. Now on the right-hand
side, we have the track Ateriminia on Deck 2. For this one, we only
need to set one hot cue. This is going to be a
quick video as well. We only need to set the hot cue one phrase before the drop, and that is bar Number 25.1. So one phrase just before this drop here is where we're
going to set the hot cue. Let's have a listen to the drop. [MUSIC] That's the
drop we're going to replace over the Pump
Up the Jam drop. Let's move it back. [MUSIC] Now we're going
to use beat jump to jump backwards 32 beats. Just here on bar Number 25.1, we're going to set
the first hot cue. On this one we're going
to leave it green, and then just add to
the comments mix in. Now once you've done this mix, you can filter the
track out however you want and whenever you want, but I'm just going
to show you how to do this last mix now. For this mix you
don't have to use the low-frequency equalizers
because during the mix, there is no baseline, so it's not necessary
to use them. All you need to do is move the cross-fader from
one side to another, slowly over one phrase. Let's move the track here. Pump Up the Jump just before
we're going to mix out. Cross-fade it to
the left-hand side, both tracks beats inked up,
and let's have a listen. [MUSIC] Now when it
gets to hot cue B, I'm going to press ''Hot
Cue A'' on the next track, and [MUSIC] slowly move
the cross-fader across. But just before the track drops, it's going to go all the way
over to the right-hand side. [MUSIC] Then from
here you can press your sampler button
and hit the horn. [MUSIC] Then
whenever you want to throw your track, you can filter out. [MUSIC] There you have
it. That is the last track in the DJ mix prepared
and ready to do. In the next video, we're going to do the
full demonstration of the full mix once again, but in that video,
there's going to be pop-up instructions as well on the screen to help
you walk through. I'll see you in the next video where we're going to
do the full mix again, and hopefully you should
be able to join along with your hot cues and your tracks prepared. See you
in the next video.
12. Full DJ Mix Demonstration: In this video, I'm now
going to demonstrate to you the full DJ
mix once again. But this time you
should now have all the hot cues
setup correctly on your own tracks and also have now had a practice
with them too. So you should now be
able to mix along and do the exact same DJ mix as I do. As I do the DJ mix, the video will also include
pop-up instructions as well. As you are watching the mix, you should understand
what to do. For the purpose of
this demonstration, I'll be using the low-frequency
equalizers to mix with. But remember, if you
don't feel comfortable using the low frequency
equalizers just yet, it will still work
if you just want to use the crossfader by itself. So have a watch me doing this DJ mix first and then
give it a go yourself. Remember to follow the hot
cues from left to right and read the instructions and you should have no problem
doing the mix. Good luck and I hope you
have lots of fun with it. Let's do it. [MUSIC]
13. Congratulations Mix With Me (Skillshare): Well done and congratulations
