About This Class

Hi! I am Lettie and this is Drawing in Procreate! Tutorial 7.

Welcome to the first part about blending modes in Procreate. In this class we will discover what the blending modes are! We will start talking about the Darken set.

I will explain thoroughly how each of the modes exactly works and how to make a good use of them to get fantastic illustrations. We will create several compositions using words, drawings and photos.

After that we will dive into the Lighten set and explore the great options this set has to offer us.

I will use an iPad and an Apple Pencil, but no stylus is required.

Basic knowledge of Procreate is recommendable to take this course.

1. Introduction: Welcome to the drawing in Procreate Sands Tutorial. This is the first part about blending modes and procreate in this class. We will focus on the dark and under lights and set you maybe think that working with them is always experiment of process because it's impossible to predict their results. Well, the purpose off this class is to show you how each blend mode works. So by the end of thesis to classes, you will have a strong understanding off how they work on which one you have to use to get the results you are looking for. For the cast project, we will combine photos, letters, drawings on apply some off these blending most to create fantastic illustrations. So grab your I bet on. Let's get started. 2. Blending Modes: blending modes out used to determine how to layers will blend into each other. To apply a blending mode, we need to have at least two visible less. We will apply blend modes to the top play. These layer will be affected by the color hue saturation on brightness off the one directly below. In this case, the image off the lab, you know, doesn't feel older campus. So if we happen over visible there, it will affect the final result as well. Please will happen until we have all the pixels field with color. We will feel all the cameras now. So even if we had more lays on the needs, they wouldn't affect the final result. As you can see, if we tap again, multiply, for example, thes part off the drawing is affected by these layer. I'm please one by the label. If you only need to play in color for your base layer, you can use the background there instead off anyone we will name the top layer blend lair. I'm the other one base layer. As we just saw the blending mode spun and will pop up if we stop here. The letter represents the active blending mode. It also will be highlighted in blue by default. All the less are set to normal. This means no effect is supplied to this layer. When witches a different blending mode, the pixels off the blend lair will be modified differently by the ones off the base layer, producing an effect that depends on the mode we are using. We will go through this in depth in the next mediums. Okay, the result will be only visible when we have both layers activated. If we deactivate the base layer, the pixels off the blender will be modified by the pixels off the next active land below. If we deactivate the blend there, we will see the older layers remain unaffected, blending mode screen, non destructive effects so we can always come back and said the layer to normal, modify its capacity or switch to a different learning mode. 3. Darken set: Multiply: dark and blend modes. Let's start talking about the dark and set. We will use the set to get darker results when we apply in your visa, landing most to our blend layer. The result will be that disappearance off the white areas on the darkening, off the rest off the colors, but black because it can be any darker. Having said that, let's deactivate these moved the base layer here. Um, let's talk about multiply. This is the best, most food darkening, great for creating shadows and removing whites and all the light colors. But how? These wigs? Well, it looks at the color information in a channel on multiplies the base color by the blend color to get the resulting color. As you can see here, the minimum is zero on the maximum 2 55 In this case, it will not multiply these numbers directly. Zero will remain. The minimum on one will be the maximum. So imagine we have a one instead off to 55. So these will be 0.5. Um, these will be 0.25 and so long of these are the numbers that will be multiplied to get our resulting color Okay, let's make an example. So let the base layer. Um, let's just a color this time will be 101 Seeing the layer on greatest watch for our blend color zero 0.5 and one save the sort and feelers. Okay, Now apply. Multiply. I'm safe. The resulting colors were Now we have the base the plan under resulting color. So let's multiply one by zero should be zero. Okay, zero by around 00.5 equals Syria to I'm Finally one by one equals one. That's why the resulting color is serious. You one multiplying any color with black will produce black because we will be multiplying each china by zero. If we feel the letters with white, we will be multiplying. The color turns by one. What do you think it's going to happen now? Well, the layers will disappear because our resulting color will be the result off multiplying our base color by one. Sometimes thes mode can lead us just some curious results. For example, if we keep magenta and change our blend color to yellow what color do you think we will get Dr Yellow? A darker magenta Maybe Well, we will get ran think about why. OK, usually the resulting color will be just a doctor. One. For example. Let's choose these light blue for our base layer on these one for our blandly Let's stop. Multiply now I'm darker blue it is now. I will show you how quickly we can create a new awesome shadow for our lettering using. Multiply. Just duplicate this layer deactivated, blending mold here unused to transform to to move it a little bit. And it's done. We will also use Multiply too dark, and for those quickly one way is to duplicate the four layer on. Apply. Multiply it to the top one. Another way is to create a new layer I'm feeling with the color you like. I usually use color ingredients for this task. Normally, they go from black to white tap multiply. If they effect is too dark, you can adjust the bus city here. On the contrary, if it's not enough, you can always duplicate the blood layer. In this case, this is way to dark. You can also flip the blend layer to darken the bottom as well. On off course. If you want to adjust the color temperature, just go to re color. Try using different colors and Grady INTs to find the ones you like the most. We will use multiply to protect our digital images by water marking them. If you are put in your illustrations online on you want to protect your rights. The best way to do it is using a faint logo are test superimposed on the image. Do not use too large or dark texts for war marking, or it will dominate the image again. Use the capacities either to get the results you are looking for or use a lighter color. Let's make it smaller. Remember not to use white or black because everything in white will disappear on everything black will remain black. 4. Darken set: Linear Burn: Lena Bar. This will give us dark and resold them multiply but less saturated than color burn. In this case, we will get there, resulting color by adding blend em based colors Unsubs trucked in white. We no longer need these watches, so let's delete them on. Save the resulting color off our linear burn. The linear burr mode will add up the blend on the base cooler and then sub Strat white to get the resulting colors. So zero class 93 93 minus 2 55 equals lesson zero. So it will be zero. We can have negative numbers. Okay. Again, 124 plaice 138 equals to 60 to minus 2 55 equals seven. Here is this un Finally 165 plus 106 disease minus 2 55 equals 76. So this is how we get the resulting color. When we use linear burn, we will use linear bar to get a C p a or being ditch. If it on a photo, we're just going to use a radio, Grady in a multiply to darken the ages on. Then we will use a brownish or oranges layer on. Apply linear burn deactivated his layer if the edges are too dark for your taste. I used this blend bow to turn photos into drawings. Let's transform this stool into a stool drawing. All we need is a texture image. I've chosen this one, then apply linear burn to our blandly and it's done. We can also add a crackle effect. Using this image. Just stop linear bargain. If it's too much years, multiply instead. We do not need an image to create a draw. In effect, we can create a texter layer using a present brush. The Nice for us, for example, to keep the linear bar acted to see how it's looking to get a watercolor. We think we can use the work on the brush, but I prefer the cloud broth from the elements it to get more realistic results. Modify the brush, opacity and size under color as well. Try not to use too dark colors. Remember, they set off blending mode will darken any color you use next. Create a crackle effect for these days. How would you do it? Well, first thing we need is an image. Here it is then we have to apply. Linear burn. Right? Okay. Now we have the effect over all our image. But we want only the vase. How do we do it? Is he creating a mask? Go to the base layer topped the selection tool Automatic on selective ways. Once you're done, go back to the blend layer on select mask on. We did it. If the crackle effect is to being, you will have to delete them. Ask because if you decrease the size, these is what will happen. So delete the mask, modify the image size, then top on hold a selection toe to reload. The last selection I created the mask again. If this was in your last selection, you will have to duplicate the layer before delayed in the mask. He raised his mask. Modify the emits signs, top the layer mask, select on, then create a new mask. Deliver this and it's done 5. Darken set: Colour Burn: color burn. This is darker dumb. Multiply with more saturated Mitchum's on a slightly reduced highlights. It will look at the color information in each channel again, but the equation to get the final core is quite complicated, so we will simplify it, saying the result will be a darker, on more contrasting color. I used this blend move when linear burn doesn't give me the results I'm looking for. For example, here I want to create parental times with these two images. When I talk linear burn, it doesn't blend the images aside. I was suspecting the flower is too dark here. Everything is to bluish on. I still see the flowers a photo. So corner barn for me this time. Sometimes I use corner burn on linear bar on the same image. To get this saturated, I'm contrasted colors that I need in the Zimet. I want the text looks like it's printed on the fabric, so let's to use a color from the punkin and use it to fill the punking word. If I use linear burn, it would look to digital on. If I use color burn the fabric looks better, but the color is not what I was suspecting at all. First thing I usually do is to duplicate the blend layer to see if it gets better. It does this time so I don't need to do anything else. But what's happened when our were has different colors on it. I made these with this plunder brush on using the color picker to get the colors from the pumpkins on the leaves. If we apply color burn to thes layer, this is how it will look. If we duplicate the layer, it will look burn on. It could be cool, but I'm not looking for these results right now, So I will keep color bar here on applying linear burn here. I'm maybe the crazy opacity a little bit. Yeah, now it's perfect for me. 6. Darken set: Darken: darken. In this case, procreate looks at the color information in each channel on select the vase or the blend color, whichever it's darker as the result in color. Remember, lower values are darker on high Bali's lighter. If the tenant's off, the blandly are darker. Done the base one. The resulting color will be the color off the blend, so the letters will remain the same. If the tunnels off the base layer are darker, done the blend. One. The resulting color will be the color off the base so the letters will disappear from our site. Let's choose a different base color for you to see what exactly happens So which value will have our resulting cutter. If we choose these two colors, well, let's active darken on. Save their resulting car. Let's compare the channels off our base on blend colors. Our resulting color will be the combination off the darker channels that we go. Red Channel. Between this June 192 is a darker green tenant here 16 and blue Tunnel 115. So this is the process. Appropriate follows Each time we apply Duncan, these mode allows us to get our fogey effect easily. We just have to use a radiant as a. Basically, the's mode will always choose the darker color. So at the bottom we cannot see our letters because black on dark grays are darker. Done our pinkish letters. We will see the learners again when some off their channels are darker. Done the channels off the base color. Let's try something different now. Our blend layer is going to be these one on the letters Debase. What do you think is going to happen if we active dark? And now? Well, we will lose the background because our current blend layer has nothing to plan with in this area, so it will disappear while here we will get the same thing we got when our blend layer wasa text layer To get this result, you always have to have the background on the or the less deactivated because as soon as it has pixels to blend with, it will do it. Let's make unnecessary eyes. How would you place a drawing or a photo in these notebook? These birds, for example, we usually use this election to to get rid of the Bagram. That's okay, but in this case We have a white back room on what happens with one when we apply a blending moved from the dark and set. It is a beer so we doesn't need to choose one of them to get what we are looking for, I will choose Darken. I also want to add a watercolor effect So I will use this image to get that I will choose dark and again because it will erase these parts that I no need on us. It will keep the darker colors on. The wood is darker than my yellow layer. It's only will keep my image here in the white area. You can easily change hue, saturation and brightness. Here, tap on Hope Review to compare on Do the last modification here or reset. If you don't like the result, Doc and we'll allows us to fool everyone by creating fake compositions. He much enjoyed this boy on. You want to prove you have been here Normally we will use a selection to again to crop this areas, but we don't need to do that anymore because we have darkened. The only thing we need is this area to be lighter down the image we're going to plan because when we apply dark and it will choose the darker pixels. So that way it will choose the pixels from the other image. Also, the part off the original photo that we want to keep should be dark it on the blend image. Okay, so let's do it then. Top dark in. I'm clearly we were there. What do you think about these? Do you think the glasses are really broken or I just trying to fool you. I use this image created. Must apply. Don't get swollen, broken glasses. 7. Lighten set: Lighten & Screen: Let's continue talking about the light and set we will use, he said. To get lighter results here, we can choose between these four. In this case, when we apply any of thes blending modes, the result will be the disappearance off black on the lightning off the other colors, but white, which remains the same as you can see here. Black is missing. Next the activate days moved the base layer. Here, activate these layer on talk about lighten. This is the opposite of darken. It looks at the color information in each channel on selects the base. All the blend color, whichever is lighter as the resulting color. If all the channels off the base layer are lighter than the blend ones, which is the gays, the resulting color will be the color off the base so the letters will disappear from our site. That is what is happening here. Let's change the color off our blend there and see what happens. Now. All the challenges off the blend layer are lighter. Done the base ones so the resulting color will be the color off the blend layer. The color of the letters will remain the same. Let's make another example. Let's choose a different blend on base colors for you to see what exactly happens these magenta for our letters, um, these one for our base. Apply lights, and now we've got a lighter result. Let's create a swatch to compare it with our base and blend colors so in these skates appropriate will compare the channels values off our base and blend colors on. We'll keep the higher ones to create the resulting color. Remember, they hired a number. The light of the color. Let's check it out. Britain. Between these and this, it will keep 173. Here it is Green Channel. Between these, the these 72 72 plus channel. Between these and this 135 we went correct. We will use lightened to our texters. Too dark or black objects, for example, To this sneakers. Let's have some fun redesigning them. This is a photo off a hotel balloon. We will use. Lighten to stump these butter into our for it. As you can see here, we will keep the areas off the pattern with lighter colors done, debates on. We will lose the resident hours. Knickers are black. So any color we use for our blend layer will be chosen to remain visible on. Our background is almost white, so it will prevail to raise this part. We have two options. The 1st 1 is to create a mask and use black to hide everything we don't want in our composition. Physical one is go to hue, saturation and brightness on degrees. The brightness off the blend Lee this way. The problematic pixels will be now darkened on the pixels off the base layer, so procreate will choose them when applying. Lighten. We can also change the saturation on the color. This is what I did with the rest off the images. Cherries, butterflies, a graffiti on a vessel. Remember that if the base color is too light, you can always duplicate it on. Apply multiply screen screen is the exact opposite. Off multiply. It multiplies. Inverse off the blend on base colors on, then invert the result. Let's reproduce what appropriate does step by a step? Select the blend layer. Go to kers un. Invert their blend color this way, Then select the base layer UN repeated process with the base color. Select the blend layer again on applying multiply merchant. The layers go to curves on, invert the colors. We should get exactly the same blood pink. If we just apply a screen, this is like a magic trick. Let's see. Well, uh, we got the same result. But the screen officers a quicker way to do it. Yes. In the screen moment, we will get surreal images like this one. The important thing here is the back room. It should be white. If we deactivated or Jane, it's color. It will not work. What do you think about this cup of coffee? I use the screen to great something. I am sure you've already discovered that the smoke doesn't belong to the original image. The background off the smoke is completely black on. As you know, the black pixels will disappear when we apply any mold off the light and set in. This case is green. Mold is the one that will give us the best result. I threw these for this class to show you how easily we can change the appearance off the drawing. Using the blending modes. We do not need to redraw it if we want us and rice and my administration or in this case as now a landscape. OK, how did I make? There's no I used this picture again. It has a completely black background, so if I apply ice cream, the black will disappear to get the rest off the snowy effect I used. This grade int here is completely white, so I will keep on the white pixels at the top on. Then the light gray is going to blend with my drawing, lightening it at the bottom. It's completely black. It will disappear so they part off. The drawing that is near us will remain the same. Of course, we can add masks on different layers to improve the result. But it only took us a few seconds to go from this drawing to these women. I think it's worth it. 8. Lighten set: Add & Color Dodge: huh? Similarly to scream at lightens the last, however, it has a greater effect. Let's save this. What? Just use. Want to see how exactly works it looks at the color information in a channel on acts Both colors the base on the blend to get the resulting color. So let's do it. Britain 58 less 173 should be to 31 green China 72 plus 34 106 on a little 135 plus 117 equals to 52. Okay, the result is also on increase off brightness. As you can see here, our blend color has these wryness I know where resulting has almost 100% off brightness you can use at to greatly brighten the resulting color. But I want to show you what else you can do with it. Here we have a text on. We want to blend it with these two images to create a composition for the top off a coffee shop. Many if we apply any light and blend mode, everything that waas black will disappear on why letters will remain. Why? Because they can be bright. If I apply them here. The ad mold will bright in the coffee beans and keep the white again. It will change the color off the laurels. We will get this great result. Now we can see the beans behind the letters on. They are really bright. But what happened? If we have black letters in a white background off course, the black will disappear and we will see the beans feeling the letters. We want beans inside our letters but we need a day to stand out. So we will use Bram errors un applied at you can see here the at mode is brighter. So we will keep these and finish our logo applying multiplying to the other image. Mm. I will decrease the bean size later. Bit now it looks better. Corner Dutch, this is Write it down the screen, blend mood at first sight. They look similar because they both happy. Enlighten. But if you say the searches un compared their brightness, you will see their resulting color off The color Dutch is always brighter than the screen. One in this case appropriate will look at the color information in the channel again. But the question to get a final color is quite complicated. It he buys the base color by the inverse off the blend color. Typically, it results in saturated meat on some blown highlights. That's the thing you should give him on at this point. Unsure? Do you realize we can use several blending modes for the same purpose on that? There are a few things we have to keep in mind before blending any image. For example, if there are completely white or dark areas, if we want to keep them or we don't. If the blender is lighter or darker than the base, etcetera so you probably will use color Dutch for other uses. But I've created this composition just to show you an option. The base layer is this dark ball with these climbing plant. The idea is to keep the plan on the texture off this world. So I selected this four images. They are all lighter down the dark wool, so they will blend nicely. I will show you a brick wall. I know that one roof tiles. I'm finally This is my favorite. I think they are also roof dots. Okay, that's all for now. It's time for your class project. Show me what you have learned on Create your own composition. I can wait to see what you come up with.
