1. Course Trailer: If there was just one
thing that's going to completely transform,
you, teach it. It's how to organize
your cells effectively. No one really teaches
us how to do this, but by making some small, yet significant changes
to our approach, we can dramatically affect
our performance, our outcome, and our stress
levels either, um, whereas I've been working as a secondary school teacher in
the UK now for seven years. On the side, I run a YouTube
channel and I'm lucky enough to be a father to
two beautiful children. If you've ever stepped
foot inside a classroom, you'll know just how intense
and full on that environment can be and at first
how threatening it might feel as soon as you
go in there as a teacher, you really feel like
the full weight of the room is resting
on your shoulders. Effectively, what we
are is performers and wearing a 2530 pupils. And there are multitudes
of things that need to be quickly taken into
consideration and dealt with. Otherwise, the
class can fall into disarray experience as
a teacher coupled with being relatively assertive and analytical in
nature as lead men. And in some ways forced me to evaluate and develop
a system that helps me to solve some of those problems that we
encounter day in, day out. The issues that we're
going to discuss and not pedagogical. We're not gonna go into how
to deliver your content, classroom behavior
management or assessment. For example. We want to be more effective with
our teaching and planning. We want to feel more
organized to be able to put our pupils first there to be less multitasking and to have more free time both
in and out of work. Some of us might even be looking at going up the career ladder and not quite sure exactly how they can improve
that performance. There are obviously daily
challenges they face. Lack of time for planning and organizing this
performance pressures, paperwork, data. So another challenge
for me was actually the bank of resources that we've got to
constantly juggle. We've got them saved in
many different areas, such as in emails, archives, sql Servers,
personal computers, hard disk drives,
USB's, the Cloud. Often the result is that we feel completely stressed
and burned out. The content that I'm going to share with you in this course is something that
I wish I would've known a few years back. And I really do believe that
it's gonna go a long way into making a much
more organized. And hopefully I'm making
you a little bit happier. The cost will be separated
into three parts. Part one, that tall part to the strategy and part
three, the conclusion. In part one, we will discuss notion and talk about the watts, the why's and the how's. Part two will be where we use what we have learned
in part one to start constructing a usable,
highly effective workspace. It'll teach you the basics
of content management, layout and design, and
how to set up a database, calendars and task lists, all of which interrelate to help save time and increase
their performance. Finally, we'll finish
with a conclusion where we will summarize all of the things
that we've learned. And I'll also share some
further ideas on how notion may be able to
benefit you and your career. Some of these classes will be more relevant to
you than others. So feel free to jump around and perhaps just
watched the whole thing.
2. 1.1 - What is Notion: You made it welcome. This is 1.1 what he's nauseous. What exactly is it? Well, in my words, I would explain it as a single-space while
you could think right, planned captured thoughts,
managed projects, or even run an entire component and do it exactly the
way that you want. It is a very simple
and clean workspace. And in many ways
it can be used as the centralized hub
for all that you do. I also use it further to store images, video
files, links, and bookmarked website maps, activities, truckers,
contact schedules and more. The list is almost endless. It is fundamentally simple
to use and it feels quite intuitive with drag-and-drop and
super-fast searches, the best thing is that
you can literally designed the pages how you want. It can be customized
to look, feel, and work however
you want them to. Another thing I
find incredible is that I can have pages
within pages into infinity.
3. 1.2 - Why use Notion: This section, I
have further broken down into Part a and Part B. This means that should
you not have any interest into how I came to
discover knowledge at all? Then you can just
jump ahead to part B, where I'll give you ten good
reasons for using Notion as a teacher in 2019 to 21. My lifestyle, some
monumental shifts on that required me to be highly
proactive and productive. The path of discovery,
and in some cases, re-discovery led me to sapiens and Harmodius book by
Yuval Noah Harari. Within these books, there
was lots of discussion about the way that we make
decisions and how our brains, George information,
calculate an act. The idea was that our
minds possibly worked. In fact, algorithmically. It really led me to rethink
my approach to life and ponder thoughts about how algorithms are used
in different fields, industries, and mediums to accomplish certain goals
and resolve problems. It led me down many
different avenues that took me eventually to
a guy called Ali Abdel. You may have heard of him. He
is a doctor and a YouTuber. And he shared knowledge
about this app, the change that using Notion made to my life
as actually vast, but That's enough about me. Puppy will allow ten reasons why I think Notion is
perfect to use integer. Number one, it's
just a text editor. If all you want to do
is add a few notes, maybe do a grocery list. Notion makes it really
easy to get started. You just click, Add a page, enter a title, bright
wherever it is that you want. Number to organization. A simple notion has no
notebooks or sections. It allows unlimited nesting
without restriction, you get to decide how your
content is organized. Number three, it has a super clean and minimal
interface notion. Packs in a massive
arsenal of functionality. Most apps would handle
this with menus, task bars, tabs, widget,
and other clutter. But Notion gets the
out of the way. It keeps the
functionality easier, accessible in an away from site number for
everything is a block. This is one of the
most important aspects to understand about nausea and it's something I really struggled to get
my head around at first, but every paragraph, header
and embed is just a block. Blocks are easy to drag around the page and into all the
pages in all the projects. Number five, you can easily embed anything
with the forward slash. You can perform
nearly a 100 tasks that may sound like
a lot of scrolling, but jumping to the one
that you want is as easy as typing in
whatever you think it is. The mistake, you can
make data tables laced, galleries,
calendars, bolds. More tables work just
like spreadsheet Lisa just less for with
optional added data. Galleries can be for images, text or anything else. Starting from scratch
can be overwhelming. Fortunately, that as a template for almost
anything that you want, most text editors have got web, mobile and desktop version
notion is no exception. Dome9 notion is very affordable. You can actually use most
of notion free forever. The biggest limitation of the free plan is how
much you can upload. However, nothing He's locked, but it is the perfect
tool for knowledge. Workers. Notion can be used to bookmark and
save and embed websites. And eventually you
can actually build something that people are
calling a second brain, which essentially allows you to get all of the stuff out of your head and into a
visual form where they, the way you can create past
that leads to all the paths, to all the paths, you
can cross-reference your knowledge with a database. You can then analyze data
with different views depending on your current
work focus, mi mile. You can use the
calendar to track deadlines and schedule
appointments. And you can use the
built-in Kanban tool to manage individual projects. Thank you very much
for listening. That was 1.2.
Hopefully you found some bits of value within that and hopefully
see you in 1.3.
4. 1.3 - Pricing: Welcome to 1.3 pricing. Well, the price of
notion is actually free. The free options are,
however limiting features. The features are
actually some of what I rely on most in
the paid version. And that is the ability
to upload files, photos, and PowerPoint, etc. The option also to go back to older versions of
a page that you've done just in case you made mistakes in the future
and you want to go back to a previous day. The free version will however, allow you to basically
do everything else. Nothing is locked
to search like you would find in some
other softwares. As a teacher and
educator, however, you can actually get the
full version for free. You would need to
use your school or college e-mail address for this that may or may not
put you off personally, as I use Notion for
other areas of my life, I wanted it to be
completely personal to me and separate from
my place of work. Though, I should add
that the option to transfer your workspace over to a personal account
in the future. Lei today it is always
there anywhere.
5. 1.4 - Installation: This one we're going
to talk about how you can install notion. If you know how to
use a computer, you likely already know
how to install stuff. If you have no problems
installing software, then please by all means, just skip this video. But yeah, basically, we want to visit the notion
that ISO website. Now if you only intend to use the software via browser, I, you don't want to install
the install anything on your computer and just hit
Sign up as you arrive, filling you Google
or Apple login details or create an account
using your email address. If you do wish to
install the app, which I personally do recommend, then you're going to want to go over to the Downloads tab, hit Mac or Windows, just as simple as
hitting the button relevant to yourselves. I'm on a Windows computer, so I'm going to just click back to download is
completely effortless, takes less than a few seconds. And once it's finished, you just open the
file and neural way. He signed in same fashion
that I've just mentioned. If you want to install
it at the smartphone, that all you need to do
is pop over to the app or plaster typing notion, select Download, and it will
automatically install it via when he's downloaded,
you find it in your apps. It will then pop up
with a login page, followed by the new
notion default setup, as we've just mentioned. I hope that's been
of some help to you. In the next video, we're gonna
talk about the anatomy of nausea and exactly
what everything is and what everything does
so that it doesn't seem so overwhelming when you're
just getting started. So thank you very much for watching and I'll see
you in the next one.
6. 1.5 - The Anatomy of Notion: In this video, we're
gonna be talking about the anatomy of notion. Because this course
is primarily aimed at showing most teachers how
notion can be used for us. We need to concentrate most
of our focus onto that. If however, you've never
tried the app before, you've never even heard of it. Then it makes sense to
spend a little bit of time learning the
bare-bones of block, the buttons and
stuff actually do. When you open up Notion
for the first time, you're going to see a default
setup with a couple of pre-made templates for
you to start from mine. As you can see, it's
already been populated. But don't let this
confuse you at all. All of the icons
that you see are mine have been put there by me. Feel free to take a
look the ones loaded onto your workspace if
you've not used for them, or would rather create your own, either from a different
template or from scratch. Just hover over it, click the three
dots, hit delete. And it's as easy as that. But you're looking at now
is basically a home screen. Onto the sidebar over on the left you can
see that there is a sidebar picture the sidebar as being a little bit like
the toggles on a website. The sidebar is also where you can organize your workspace. You have the ability to drag and drop open the toggles and see where things are
without even needing to actually head over
to the page itself. The main areas are the
favorites and private, private beam where
your workspace and all of its pages are
actually located. And obviously within
the favorite page, it's where you're
going to find the pages that you favorited. This is real time saver and saves you from effectively
having to start from the home screen every time you visit your
knowledge and workspace. At the top of the sidebar, you're gonna see
several menu options. Here's an overview
of each of these. At the very top, you've got
your workspace switcher. Click on new current workspace
his name to switch between workspaces that you belong to or create a new one or
add another account, or even just log out. So below that there
is quick find. And one of the real handy
things about using this app is how fast and accurate
research actually is. You just click open on the
North and search window. And there you will find
that you can either tie or just look at
recently visited pages. I've personally never
used this actual button. And I find that the
shortcut of Control and D, at least on a Windows
is much faster. Then further below, you can actually find the
updates button. You click it to see
any notifications that is on your workspace
is also a menu that contains revisions
that were made on pages that you follow or have made new mentions if
you're part of a team. New work assignment. There is also like a little
red notification badge dot L appear when you've
got unread notifications, such as the ones that you'll
find on the calendar. I use this button where I've
got deadlines or debts that I've put into my calendar,
and that's about it. So next we've got the
settings and members button. You click to open this
control panel for editing your account information
and workspace settings. Within there, you've
got payment plan or billing information in here. You'll also find
information on how to earn credit and actually get
your personal plan cheaper. You can add members.
And then there's the other fund angles
that you're likely to find in any of the
SAR settings page. Below this, you then have the templates and
import buttons. If you have anything in places such as Evernote or Trello, I want to bring it over to nausea without
having to go through the tedious approach of copying
and pasting that stuff, then this button will
serve you really well. Last, but by no means least
we have the template button. Notion is absolutely packed full of really great templates. Some created by the
developers themselves and others have been
shared by individuals. There are literally tons of really cool and fun
templates that you can have a flip through and
have some fun with it. Sure to check those out. And that about wraps
it up for this video. Hopefully this has given you a very brief overview and you feel a little
bit better about it. Remember, mine is gonna look a little bit
different to yours, but let's just keep things
nice and simple for now. I don't want to overload
you with it all. I'll see you in the next one.
7. 1.6 - Platforms: Hi, Welcome to this one. This is gonna be a super-duper
quick little video on Notion and platforms. If this is something of
little to no interest yet, then please once again
skip to the next part. I'm just doing this for
the sake of completeness. And I'm sure there'll be those
of you out there who may find this information
useful holders may be not. So of course, as
previously stated, it's available across
all, that's web, desktop, smartphone, Microsoft, Apple,
Android, et cetera. Now, for some of
the finer details, the desktop app is used
as the main device for both construction and
maintenance of your content. And I find it much faster. That is because it does
away with bookmarks, tool and search bars acquainted
with normal web browser, the Android app then can be used on the goal when
you're aware from the PC, the bonuses that
you have everything right there in the
palm of your hand. It does, however, have the size of the screen
to battle with, which can make it a little bit impractical to do
anything substantial. I also find that the
app sometimes can be a little bit slower
to load in comparison, I use it for daily tracking, shopping, and task list, as well as note-taker and
more than anything else, all of which it's
perfectly suited for. I do use it for many
other things too. This is by no means
an exhaustive list. Here's a comparison of law times for those of
you that are interested. As you can see, the smartphone
app does a good job of actually squeezing
your information into that little tiny screen. It does look a little
bit different. The layout when it's on the
smartphone versus a PCR, the desktop app,
but it's all still there and it's perfectly usable. As I say, it's probably just not the best tool to use solely. So that is the end
of this short video. Thank you very
much for watching. This also concludes part one, and I'll look into nausea
and as a tool for helping us to become better organized
within our profession. I hope that it's
been of some use TR and you found some of what
I've said has resonated. I'm just really glad
that you've stopped by and you've stayed
up until this point. So thank you so much for that. In part two, we're gonna be looking at how the app
can be used within the realm of teaching will go a little bit deeper into
Notion and teaching in general before zooming into the finer details of
how it can actually be utilized to help facilitate your role. I'll see
you in the next one.
8. 2.1 - Storage: One of the main hurdles
to being organized that I faced was the digital
clutter that surrounded me. Files would be stored on school servers
within staff areas, pupil areas, and personal areas. Some might be on a
cloud-based system such as OneDrive or stored
in archived emails, it would be a personal
USB staff USBE, another maybe other
personal devices such as cameras and phones. And you may even have
some old CD rums floating around to it was
always an issue for me. A 100 different files stored
in a 100 different places. It was clunky and it
was time-consuming. Then you get organized, you'd save it onto a memory
stick or hard drive, then you'd forget to bring
one in or it starts working, the PC won't recognize it, or you lose the wire you might find and I'll
copy somewhere, then you'd adjust it and
end up with a ton of different copies
of the same file. Notion can be a solution
to a lot of these issues. Content Management
is much easier and I'm really excited to
show you this approach. So how do we add a file? Then, first off, you
want to find the file than simply drag it over to
where you want it to be. Another way to do this is to hit the forward slash and then
start typing file upload. You can even type in picture and tap the button,
choose the file. Another way to do this, at
least with Word documents, is to hit the Import button on the sidebar and find the
option for word in there. Remember though we do
need that paid version. If we wish to upload files
bigger than five megabytes, once file is on your workspace, you can simply click it and it downloads a copy of that file. Videos and images are a little bit different
though once again, you will load it by
doing what we've just discussed with the dragging
or the forward slash. And that actually lets you embed them directly
into your page, which makes them visible. If of course you don't
want to have to view that image or video and you
just want a link for it, then you just do
the forward slash and file command instead. That's about it. As you can see, it's really
simple and straightforward. I would actually
like to add, though, a little bit of a
teacher in this class. For those who might have
immediately started wondering, I really wouldn't save
pupil or staff data to it. So no pupil for us trackers
or assessment details, no contact details
or even names. If I'm ever going to
mention a pupil in my school journal more on
that in a later video. I actually use initials for
the first and last letter. But that's as far as it goes. Just make sure you're following your own school's policies
on GDPR as they're extremely strict and they can land you in a lot of
trouble if broken. I obviously don't hold any
responsibility for whatever you choose on your
own Notion workspace. My video is merely for entertainment purposes only
and I can actually give you professional advice if
you do wish to have that obviously seek a GDPR
rep within your school. You could probably also speak to teach in unions for
advice as well. Breaking GDPR rules
can actually result in huge fines for both the
school and individuals, and it can actually even
lead to dismissals. Unfortunately, notion also has a policy to help guide
you on this issue. So if you want to have a jump over to the Content
and Use Policy, that will give you a little
bit more clarification as to what you're allowed to upload
and whatnot talk loud, please, though, do not
let any of this away. I promise it's not something that you'd
need to worry about. I've never found
any of this to be a hurdle in any shape or form. Keep your school's
data where it belongs, both staff and pupils, and pretty much everything else that you would want
can go in here. And that's it. Hopefully that's been an
informative video for you. Yeah. See you in the next one.
9. 2.2 - Design Layout: We come across
these ions good and bad and all fall
on a daily basis. We're forever surrounded
by graphic design. Be it on letters,
vehicles, advertisements, website, we find it
on packaging, Apps, products, the list really
does just go on and on. Some of the designs become
across can be really good. Especially things like
logos that use things like negative space or those
are just terrible thing. The pollsters, your
cover teacher in science might have
had you do way back when you were in school or the birthday cards that you made for your parents
when you were. A lot of people never really
developed beyond this. Think about the leaflets
that come through Edo, the old-school takeaway that can be really visually not easy, cluttered, and disorganized
instinctively, I think we all know when we come across butane,
great design. But now might not be able
to put our fingers on exactly what it is
Just as we know Bob. So why am I mentioning
this in the first place? Why are we looking at the
fundamentals of design layout? Well, it's because given the opportunity in
our busy lives, it's all too easy to
gloss over this part and just create another
chaotic workspace. Before we've even begun, we've all seen how so
many teachers use blurry, misshapen and pixelated images in their resources and power. Bi and teachers the world
over are renowned for their really bad
PowerPoint presentation. If this is an issue for you, then having a cluttered
notion workspace, he's gonna save you time and it won't leave you feeling
fresh and organized. Instead, it will just become yet another
cumbersome piece of software that you'll
probably leave behind in favor of
the old methods. I want you to know how
important a good layout. Here's some examples. Using a kind of first
principles approach to this. We're going to break it down into a set of
questions to help us define what exactly is that
we want from our own space. So first off, what
are your priorities? What do you use the most? How much information
do you need to see? Can you lead your eye? What's the first thing
that you need to say? How easy is it to find? With those questions in mind? I'd like to add that uniformity, symmetry really help us with organization as just keeping
it as clean as possible. With symmetry comes balance. It helps us with our ability
to find stuff on the page. Another thing I
really want you to think about is whitespace. Whitespace helps
us to feel calm. Our eyes are always scanning. And as soon as our eyes
glance across a word, our brains read that and it
forces our brains to work. Think about this part
really carefully. Because remember, when we're
up in front of a group of 25 plus pupils, all sat waiting. The last thing that we want to feel is the pressure
of having to concentrate with the
information I've just mentioned and the questions
that I've just paused, I'd like to set you
a little task of answering them based
on your own role. What are your answers to this? Think really, really hard and concentrate on the
fundamental truths. Be completely honest and intentional about what
you come up with. And hopefully that
will help you with your own organizational
journey via nausea. If you're still struggling
to come up with answers that you might be a little
bit uncertain about. Ask yourself why five times for each answer that
you could come up with. And that can often lead
to a little more clarity. Thank you so incredibly much
for watching this video. I hope it's been
of some use here, and I will see you
in the next one.
10. 2.3 - My Layout: Welcome to another video. This one is going to be a general overview of the
way that I chose to lay out my own workspace is by no means perfect nor
a finished article. Mind you, I don't recommend
ever will be as I'll forever be morphing it to
suit my daily needs and this is always changing. Summarizing the last class
then what we had to look at was the fundamentals
of design layout, both good and bad designs. And towards the
end of the video, opposed a few questions. Hopefully by now you've a go answering these and have
gotten to the root of your needs with a
clearer image of what it is that you wish to accomplish
within your own layout. Here's some of my answers to those questions of
which there were many. I want it to be able to
see absolutely everything. So no scrolling all there, right in front of
your very eyes. I needed my layout to
be quick to navigate. My second answer
was for it to be clean and simple to very
much the same as before. Cleanliness within
a workspace is visually more attractive
and it's easier on both the brain and the eye
with less information but our eyes to flip through
and also consciously read, we can more easily find
what we need is akin to place in your car keys on the kitchen side as a pollster, under a pilot letters and paper, or in the laundry basket
inside a trouser pocket. Eventually we find them, please just not ideal. Another answer was
grouped categories with drop-down boxes that can be expanded and retracted at well, I don't want to have to
go route and through things to get to where
it needs to be for me. And the way that I work, I like to have it
in front of me. The problem with this
normally would be the insane toggles
solve this issue here. A toggle can be opened
and closed and it can hold a series of other toggles that way you have
it where you want, but it's hidden from view
until you actually need it. Onto the next answer sidebar
access from the main page. So pretty self-explanatory
this one, but I didn't want to
have to find my way in actual teaching page by also going through the rest
of my Notion workspace. It is there and I can
get to it like that, but it's not fast enough. So these few things alone lead to less
cluttered thoughts, less time wasted trying to
remember where everything is, what files in what location and endless scrolling
and slow loading. That is all for this video. Now, in the next
class we're going to look this layout in a
little bit more detail. We're going to zoom
in and look at how each feature can be used. And I'll give you some
reasoning to support this idea. Really hope that you've
enjoyed this course so far, and I'll see you
in the next video.
11. 2.4 - Rules/ Values: Hello, Welcome to this
video on rules and values. What is this and why is it
at the top of the page? And how do we actually use it? Schools and other
teaching environment. It's usually follow rules and regulations as I'm showing
you more than aware. Now, I don't want
to actually wish to teach it to soak eggs here. But let's look at
this for a second. Why do we have roles? Well, there aren't many roles not entirely relevant
to this course. So let's just look at the classroom rules
specifically why them? Well, they're designed to assist the teacher in behavior
management and to ensure that there's a positive environment
for learning where all pupils feel safe
and comfortable. Consistency is crucial in creating space for effective
learning environment. Environment, students
are more able to participate in learning more effectively when they have a clear understanding of
classroom procedures. And they're important
if students can name the expectations and receive consistent responses
to their behavior, there is better control
of their actions. Now we all know this. If we didn't, chances are
we probably wouldn't have made it this far in our
careers. I know you do. It is really easy to
become complacent, lose a bit of discipline, and potentially put this kind of thing to the
back of our minds. I see it all the time. I hear about it from pupils. Some teachers are
known for being really strict that follow the
rules all the time. And I also know teachers that
are on the opposite end of the spectrum delayed
by chilled out funny, and use the rules
more as a kind of general guiding compass
than anything else. It's definitely
has its merits and the pupils tend to get on
better with that teacher. They enjoy the lessons. And you could argue
that you remember more in the lessons
that you have fun in. It does actually come
with consequences though. If one teacher follows
the roles and new dome, it gives the pupils
mixed messages about what he or she cannot do. Some pupils use this to
their advantage and may misbehave in this kind of scenario since he never
follow the rules strictly, starting now is pointless
and pupils aren't stupid. They point fingers and asking parents or even other
members of staff, it may land you in hot water. I believe the best teachers are the ones who
follow the rules, know the rules and
use the rules, but not in an unfair,
over-exaggerated manner. It's all, don't make a big
song and dance about it, but I followed nonetheless
onto values then, well, this would be where you put your own
personal routine. At least that's
what I've put it. It could be how you wish to
start an end the lesson, such as you get pupils to
line up outside in silence. Why I stand at the door
addressing uniform issues, taken mobile phones, etc. Then explaining that there's a five-minute started us
waiting for them as they go in. This kind of routine
sets the tone for the lesson and it helps pupils to understand
their boundaries. Of course, this may be
completely irrelevant to you. I myself was found
it really useful. Having this at the top
to remind me, of course, both of these things, both rules and values usually
become ingrained and habit. It's something
that I find really useful and hopefully you will do to once you've come up with your own routine and
you've written it down. You may, you can work on it
from that point and you can actually tweak it and adjust it just until you get
it just right. And you'll know is
consistent results. Because let's be honest, we're not perfect
and chances are list of routines could
probably be improved. And therefore,
having it as a list. And realizing that one of
those things is not working, you can easily just take off and replace it
with something else. Because you can go back to
previous versions of this. You can actually see what
it is that you changed and no any sort of
improvements based on it. How have I actually made this? Well, I've just made lists hidden within
toggles to make the same, you hit forward
slash on a new page. Typing t. Go to the toggle that you want and start typing
if you've already typed somewhere else it in an
e-mail or a word processor, just simply copy
and paste it over. I found I have to have mine side-by-side to
help prevent scrolling. You might also want to change the color of the text
or the background. As a little mini task for you, I would like you to have a
go at making this yourself. This will set you up
nicely for the next video. Thanks very much for watching, and I hope you enjoyed it and I will see
you in the next one.
12. 2.5 - Task Lists: Am I okay to assume
that the majority of us at some point probably
heard of a task list. I've certainly not
asked to everyone. But I do record is
quite lightly that those who have no what one is. And the title itself, I suppose, is pretty
much self-explanatory. We humans lightly understand that there might be
written off the cuff as and when they Thorpe part
of a personal work project. Or perhaps they're recurring
sets of responsibilities such as Charles or jobs that need to be completed
every shift. I myself, I've tried a few
different approaches over the years using apps such as keep to-do
list and Evernote. Or physically with
post-it notes, scraps of paper, diaries,
calendars, reminders, alarms, or sometimes even just result into sending myself
notes by email or Facebook. Probably more to the
problem I always found was that there always seemed
to be some kind of friction when making
or using them, either at lose the
pad or the paper, the pen runs out gets lost. The apps are always
an extra thing to download, to install. And then remember to
use every single time. I found that they became
easily disorganized as well. I used to have Paul states all
over the place in pockets, wallets, the glovebox
on the kitchen side. It was chaos. Anyway. When
you first got into teaching, did everyone around you have a true steel teacher plot it? Essentially it was a diary. Were still given them every single year to help
us with our planning. Truth be told, how many of those run out of space in there. Or sometimes we get to use
it for a couple of weeks. I've always struggled to
be consistent with it. Well, at some point I
got right into eel or mosque and I really wanted to know how we achieve so much. Found out that he or at
least these assistance breaks down their entire
day and five minute slots. That's a lot work. This could be achieved more easily with something like Google Calendar
that lead me onto that. And well, after spending a
couple of years using this, I realized actually there's a better way to make use of a colon death, at least for me. And I hope that it will help you out to
see what I really, really hope that you gain from this video is the
feeling of control. V, to feel a little bit better about planning ahead and remove as much friction
as possible from your already busy and
chaotic schedule. You've probably being used in task lists and calendars
your whole life. Hopefully you see the benefit
of building the system. Okay, So onto the meat. Now you'll notice online
we've got a hold. So we're going to
recreate that now. We click new page. We're going to call it hold
forever icon you want there. Let's make it a file or something like
that filing cabinet. Let's do that. Now. We're going to
create another page. So we click new page, and this one, we want
it to be a table. And you click new
database at the bottom. And we're going to
label the table tasks. Now you can see that we've
started with this blank table. We're going to change
this around a little bit. This name one is where
you would put your tasks. I'll let we can change
that to tasks if we want. Task. Over here, we've
got this column, which is actually a
multi-select option, but we're not actually
going to use this. We're going to click
Edit property. And we're going to change
this one to just select. We're going to call it status. We're going to add a new
column by going over to the plus, let's call it Don. Change that to the checkbox. We're going to add another
select options are again, go down to where it says
Type, going to select. In this one, we're
going to call priority. Last but not least, we're
going to add one last column and we're going to
make that one a date. This I'm making as a due date. You've got the options down here to adjust how you
want it displayed. But although I, I'm just
gonna leave it as it is. There we go. Start off by
dragging this over to the edge. That's that. I mean, you can make this look however you
want it to look. We've got this check column, which allows you to check it when you've finished the task. Then we've got the tasks column, which looks like it's
just one little bar, but actually it's
a full-page this. So what, I'll show
you what I mean. So let's type a task in a task, but actually you can see this little button
that says Open. Well, if you click
the button, it opens up and it's
on page now you can do whatever you
want in there as if it was anywhere else
on your workspace. You can also open it as a page. That's it. That's a task. And within it you could
have its contents if you really needed to. But if it's something small, you might only ever
need it to be written as that list for MATLAB. Over here we've got priorities. Within priorities and status, you'll notice that
there's no options. So these are select columns, which means that
whatever is in it, you can just click is really, really handy for speed in time, speeding things up a little bit. But in priority, I'm gonna
write in first priority, then second priority,
then third priority. And you just click the
button down there. Now, when I click on here, you'll see these three options. You might also want
to add a reminder. If you felt like that was
something that you would use. Another thing that
you can do with the select columns is you can actually adjust the color
in and you can also move, move them around if you
really needed to as well. If you want your first, because the most important,
let's make that red. And then this one could
be amber or yellow. Then the last one
could be green. Next time you'd put a task in. You can just head over
to your priority and you can click first. Now in the due date column, you're going to put the date
that you intend to do it. You would just click it and then click the date that you want and it automatically fills in. That speeds things
up a little bit. The other hand, the
thing about that is you can actually
put reminder. You can add a reminder to
that so that it will put a little red thing up
there on the top-left, just to let you know that
you've got an upcoming task. Lastly, in status, we're
gonna put lastly in status, we're going to it so that
this one is a score task. Now the reason we've got the status column is because
we're planning on using this database as a central hub for lots of different
bits of data. All that we really need right now is what we can
see in front of us. But later on when we're
making something else, I'll show you that
we're going to change the status and it might display certain
things differently. What we're gonna do now is
we're going to add a filter. The filter or peer. We're going to make
status is school task. You can see now it
is only showing tasks that I've got the status
of school task next to it. Okay, so now we've created a task list and we've
also created our hold. We're just going to
drag, Let's give our task list and actual icon. So we're going to put
a tasks into our hold. There you go, you can see it. I'm going to just start a new page for a second
and just pretend this is my teaching page down here. Now, underneath
teaching, we're gonna pull that database
that we've just made. We're going to put it in
here. So you're going to hit the forward slash and you're
going to type in link. You will see this link to page, but there is actually
a little hidden one called linked view of database. Click that. He's
going to ask you which database you
want me to link it to. And we're gonna click Tasks. Now, this teacher page is
completely taken up by this, and obviously we're not
going to want that. But we'll sort that
out in a second. I'd like you to do on
this bit is to add a filter status to
be school task. Now it's only going to show the school tasks as you can see. The next thing I'm gonna do is I'm going to sort and I'm gonna make the priority Ascending. It will make sure
now that if I add anything else and
it's second priority, five, try and make
this third priority. And then the one underneath
second priority. It should sort them
as you can see there. Now the other filter that
I would like to add to this linked database is to make so that anything that's
being checked disappears, add a filter and the
dawn is unchecked. The reason we want it
click to unchecked is because once I click
it, it will disappear. Now this is not disappeared,
It's not deleted. It, It's still in the database, but the filter is
only allowing it to show the unchecked ones. If you wanted to change that
you just clicked to checked. And that's like a fast way. I've been able to see the work
that you've done that day. The next thing I would
like to do is just hide that database title because I find
it's a little bit. Now I'll link to database
is actually finished. We're going to click
on the dots there. I'm going to click Duplicate. That's not going to
duplicate the database. That's just duplicating
the link to the database. I'm gonna do is I'm
gonna add an option in here for upcoming dates. Then I'm going to head over to the status for the
filter and I'm going to change it to Coen dates
and to hide school task. Now as you can see, it's the exact same table, but once for school tasks, only once for upwind
dates on there. If I add another thing down
here for upcoming dates, it's going to automatically
come up with that. But if I change that
to school task, it will pop up automatically
on the one above. So you can see now that they're synchronized, create a toggle. So forward slash toggle. And if you make it like a toggle heading three or
something like that. And in this one we're
gonna put tasks. Then below it. We're gonna make this one up. Claiming. What I'll then do is drag in this one into
tasks and this one, this table into upcoming dates. Now we've got this
nice clean space. I then like to drag them so that they're
actually side-by-side. So if you just drag it right
up here to the far corner. Now we've got tasks
and upcoming debt, okay, now we've got it
looking a bit neater. We're going to head over and duplicate this
upcoming dates one, so if we just hit the six dots, click on Duplicate, then we're going to drag it
so that it's not underneath. We're going to drag it there, so it's in its own space. Open it up. And this is the exact same
table as the one there. But this time I want
to change the view. So if you just come across to the six dots and you're going to change the
layout to calendar. I like to use this light
traditional visual calendar to actually import
almost school dates and deadlines and whatnot. But I then actually
prefer to read them in list form next to my task list. That way I can actually see what I have coming up this week, as well as the tasks I
wanted to achieve that day. It just makes it a little
bit clearer for me. I found this layout,
saw them useful. It just makes so much sense. Don't worry, we don't need to ditch Google Calendar
or anything. I haven't, but I do find that using this for work
is much, much better. That's all for this video, It's been an absolute privilege
to share this with you. I hope you have a great day and I shall see you
in the next one.
13. 2.6 - Lessons: This one might be a little
bit cheesy for you guys, but please just stick with it. Hopefully it's not
gonna be too about. Monday morning, we wake to
the sound of the alarm. It's still dark outside and it's cold after a visit to the
loo and then the shower, we brush our teeth, gas else dressed and sneak off
out of the front door. As we drive to work,
we'd run through in our head all of the things
that we need to do that day, the things we need
to catch up on their meeting that we have
to attend after-school. The pupil you promised to
help last period on Friday, right before you left. Who wants to come
at dinner time to finish their practical you remember IT staff
briefing and you've forgotten to I and you
share it the night before, you'd look messy and unprepared in front of the whole school. He pull up in the carpet, turn off your engine
and take a deep breath. The last moment of peace before
the chaos of the desktop. Zoom ahead to period
one, snake project. What lessons are we on again, you asked the pupils what
we all did last week, and if you're careful,
you can wing it. Disguise you genuine question as an assessment of
the groups learning. I remember. You congratulate the pupil on the right answer. Thank their lucky stars they remembered and you get
on with the lesson. This is the kind of day or
I lived for way too long. I'm I the only one. Have you ever felt at that to perhaps some of you may
be able to relay it all. There's wouldn't dream
in million years of going into school.
So unprepared. I want you to know that those of you who manage
your role so well, who are already so organized. Well, have my absolute respect as a teacher. You've
got a job to do. And of course, that
is to teach to help facilitate learning and share knowledge between you and them. We do this in a whole
host of different ways. There's a plethora of
different approaches. Hold books written about it. What we do requires an
absolute ton of resources. Resources like lesson plans, worksheets, reference materials. We've got less than
PowerPoint schemes of work assessment grids. We might have ordered forms,
checklist, behavior guides. There's an, there's
obviously a huge number of different things that we
need to keep in our arsenal. Remember when we talked
about our priorities, while this is where
you're going to put what we've
learned into action. I recommend my priorities are likely to be
different to your own. You'll have to take
what I'm going to say here with a pinch of salt. I teach Key Stage three and for the moment it broken
down that year, 7891011. Those are my main headings
that are one across the page. Obviously, I want them place in front of mehr as
soon as I get into my workstation and take up the majority of
my field of view. Therefore, I will put them side-by-side to reduce
that scrolling. Underneath these
headings are then placed toggles for each project that
teach in that year group, you however, might
have got topics. You may have even got
different subjects and that's absolutely fine. I've taught here
SHE in the past and this could easily
fit into here too. So now we've got the heading and below it we've got
the topic or project. Within that, I then
place all of my lessons. I teach 13 week rotations. So therefore it's 13 lessons. I will have my lessons
numbered from one to 13. If you've got lessons
which go much beyond this, say 20 plus, then it might make more
sense to you to divide this part into terms
are half terms. Then within the term, you could add the lessons
like I've done here. In there. I like to also add
a file section within that. I like to place
project booklets, schemes of work, and any
other relevant things. Remember, keep these
clean and minimal, only have what you
need in there. Another little tip
for you is to name the lesson toggles so you
know what's actually in that lesson without
needing to actually open its contents
inside the lesson, I tend to put the lesson
PowerPoint, maybe any resources. But you could also put
extension tasks, links, lesson plans, wherever it is, directly linked to
that lesson and you want to use then you
will put it in there. Now, when I rock up to my year seven snake lesson,
all I've got today, He's log on gotta notion, couple of clicks and I mean, start by hitting
the forward slash. I'm going to type in headed. I'm going to have mine
as a heading into the I'm going to type my seven and then going to press Control and D three more times. Change these it to the
other year groups. Then I'm going to drag
them side-by-side by just pulling it up
towards that, right. The next thing I
like to do is just change the color
of the background. These can be obviously
whatever you want it to be. I'm going to click typing
forward slash toggle. I'm going to call it snake. Project. Below that. Food. And below
that we've got project. I'm just going to
populate the rest of these and then I'll show
you what I'm doing. Obviously these are all empty. We're going to click the inside. We're going to forward
slash toggle again. We're going to call
it less than one. I'm going to call
this health safe. Then obviously you want to continue filling
all of these in. Now I have it. That's essentially
the finished page. We can open it up.
We've got our lessons. And then within our lessons, we would put our PowerPoint or YouTube videos or whatever it is that we
want to put in there. This is my finished page. And inside each one of these, we've actually got
our PowerPoint. There we go, less
than one health and safety and numeracy of named them so that it's easy to spot with the lesson
is and inside it, the PowerPoint, I'll
click it. There we go. This grown-up kid stuff. I've actually put pages
instead of toggles. And each one of these pages, I've got things relevant
to those parts. As an additional guide for
tracking your lessons, I also find that you can change the color of the lesson that
you teach in that week. It makes it much faster than to pick out where you need to be next week. So I'll
just turn it green. Awesome thing. And added bonus is that if you know exactly what
you're looking for, you can just press
the Control and pain search option type in snake and it will lead you to exactly where you need
to be even faster. Thank you very much for
watching this video. I hope that you found what I've said interesting and useful, and I shall see you
in the next one.
14. 2.7 - Meetings: Hi, Welcome to this video. Inside this one, you're
going to learn how to set up a basic
database for meetings. One advantage of doing this is that it will help you capture a detailed picture of those meetings and improve
the quality of your notes. It also serves as
a thorough record and you might find that useful in evidence in your practice, either for appraisals
or promotion purposes, or maybe you just
want to take on the roles of responsibility. I think that you'll find
that it also looks and feels more formal, organized, and professional than
scribbling notes down in a planner which you
renew every single year. It's also really fast
to complete and it can be made even faster by creating
an additional template. The meetings and their
contents can also be found rapidly by typing control
and pay well, anywhere. Here's how I've chosen
to approach this. First thing that we're going
to do is hit new page. And in there we're
going to click Table. Once it opens again, we want a new database. And at the top we're gonna
call this one meetings. Now, obviously, you
met with what we're hard before you say
about this blank table. And this time the columns
that we're going to put on on it as follows. So we've got type. We want the date created. We want select one that
we're going to call type. You want another select. We're going to call place. Could call it location as well. We want these to be
renamed into notes. We want a multi-select
which this one already is. And I'm just going to
call this who width. But if you've got that
word for it, in fact, I call it just with
last but not least, we want another select
will type in action. Required. That's about all we need. So I would put the
debt at the start and so you need to
rename that to debt. Then if I just delete all of these ones are then have
a type shrink that down. I'll also then have the
place with action required. That's about all we
need for that part. Now, when we start our new, now when we first
start inputting our information again
with the selection, you're going to find that there's nothing underneath them. So far, the types I
have got departmental, I've also got CPD, DIP, and so on. With the place, you would
just have room number. So let's just for
argument's sake, just call it room
one to room three. And then you can have names. Or as I've said previously
with GDPR related stuff, you can just have your initials. So if I just put
some initials down, I know they are in our school. They actually use
initials for everything. So I've learned to
remember their initials. And then action required. We just want a yes or a no. All it does is it
provides us with a bit of information as that serves as a reminder
that we've got something that needs to be
done because of that meeting. With regards to the notes, we've got this
little box here and you can just click open type in, I don't know, behavior. Then down here, you can just type everything
that was said. You can add a type it
like that or you can make it open as a page. And then again,
like I like to do, you could make a
full-width small text. And there you go. You can just start
typing straight away all your information that's
already basically filled in. So easy to do. If I was to do a new
meeting, you just click New. And then you can just
go straight to open, lock that layer and fill it in on here other than the table. So you can say I
had a meeting with ds in room one and it was a
department based meeting. Then at the end you can fill in whether there were
any action required, but yet just tap wherever it is that you
need to type in there. And that's it, simple as that. Now when it's filled
in a little bit more, you'll start to see that
it looks a bit like this. As you can see. It is quite, it's
quite nice looking. He's all organized
and you can actually search within your table
with that little icon there. To get our meeting database
onto our teacher page, you're going to hit
the forward slash. You're going to
type in link and go down to linked few of database. Inside there you're
going to click meetings. And I don't actually want
that to be under that, under that column there. So I've dragged it to the
bottom and there we are. I don't also don't
want to have to see this slot that
I'm gonna type in. Forward slash page,
call it meetings. Put an icon on there. Then. Main page. I'm going
to drag that car, that database into the meetings. Then you can just play
around with that and make it look however you
want it to look. There we go. That's
how we do it. Hope of being of service
tier and that what I've shared with you or helps you out in some way however small. That is the end of this video. I shall see you in the next one.
15. 2.8 - Resources: Guys, In this video, we're gonna be talking
about how to organize our digital resources
in a way that reduces that friction
that little bit more and hopefully allows more
time for productivity. These videos all
crossover to some extent, what we've already talked about, the bonuses of uploading
files into Notion and how prioritizing and keeping only the bare essentials in the exact place
that each needed. Here's what you need to
reduce waste of time. This is definitely something
that I believe to be true, and hopefully you
can see that too. But what then do we do
about all that other stuff? The files that we don't use daily or maybe
even occasionally, it took me a long time to
build up my little bank of resources and I'm
quite fond of air. And I like to have a dig
through it every now and again, lots of these files I
actually happen to cross in unique instances during work experience
at different schools. And they can't always
be replicated. And I bet some of you out
there that's also developed a bit of a weird
attachment to yours too, but that's totally okay. Don't worry about it. In this video,
we're going to take a look at how we can
store them within nausea. And I've broken it
down into seven parts. Cover work, extension tasks, differentiated where
seasonal work, isolation, teacher
resources and other. I've actually placed these into my main teacher page as links
to their own pages as well. Instead of toggles
on your main page, you've now got some
headings green across tasks that
you've got your day, so you got your roles
and the values. Now below that, we've
got this secondary area. And as you can see, resources right there
are further divided into cover extension differentiate at seasonal isolation and
teacher resources. My cover one is
probably the most useful because as we know
when you're all fill, last thing you want to be
doing is planning work. So all you would need to do
is once you've called in work or wherever for whatever
reason it just click cover. Cover lessons. In here are further
broken it down to the types of lessons
that might be teaching. So for example, let's
have a look in general, the ante in here. I basically just take my pick of the most relevant cover lesson. There is an email it over, and that's that in
here is where I would lob basically
everything else. Here's how to do it. On me for main column, I've got these secondary column. We'll just put our resources
down here for now. We're gonna do the same
as before, forward slash, head, a heading
to call this one, resources change the color. And then underneath here, instead of having toggles, we're going to have pages. So what I recommend you do is you actually
go to your hold. You create your pages in here. So forward slash page. And let's call this one. As I've shown you, mine is actually broken
down further pages. So that would be forward
slash page again. And you could call that
food. Go back out. If you want to add an icon, you can just click
the icon there. When we go inside these groups, you would put your work. Let's just drag a
random file over. There we go. That's how you would do it. Now back in the Teacher page, we're going to hit forward
slash link to page am I going to link it to page
that we've just created, which we've called Cover work. There we go. So when you
click it, you're in it. The bolus of it
being in your hold is that if I hover over here
and you go in your hold, all of your pages are
going to be in there. That is the end of this video. I shall see you in the next one.
16. 2.9 - Technician: If you've got technicians
in your department, you might find some
value in this video. If not, you might still find
some, but you might not. And instead, you
might find skipping to the next video a little
bit more preferable. So I went with a
technician daylight, and I've not always
be not great at utilizing them to
either my pupils, all my own advantage. I'll often just to
do everything myself because he only seems
so busy everywhere. He walks in the department. People are always
coloring him and requesting jobs and
orders and help. In this video, I would
like to share with you how I've changed
this and how you might want to use Notion
to help you manage this unique role is one
of those situations, a thing where you never
really get shown to how to manage and
use a technician. I've worked in places where this didn't really
matter because they were pretty much self-reliant
and they knew exactly what needed to be done and they just plot on with it. But I have also a witness the
other end of the spectrum where the technician literally hangs on every single request. Having a technician is a huge, huge privilege and not
something to take for granted. Bought bad management can lead to more work for
you and them not less little bit
about technicians then they actually
using the arts, design and technology, science. It, IT, and I've even heard
of them being used in PE, where the skills
learned in this video, I might translate, some, might be to use guide and inform your teaching assistants. You could also perhaps use this as a head of department dealing with your department management
duties or support staff. So a DNP technicians role is to support the
school DNC department. Now, here are some of
the things that they do. So they'll prepare
equipment and materials. They'll support the teacher
with practical lessons. They'll advice to advise
students and sometimes staff their work
to make sure that it's correct and they using
the machinery properly. Maintaining the equipment
and tools in the workshop, in the classroom, control in stock levels and older
and newer equipment. These roles can be
highly demanding, both for the teacher
and the technician. But as we're talking about
teachers and notion here, we're gonna focus on how we can best deal with
helping to organize and manage and keep track and responsible of these
responsibilities. This is where we're going
to introduce Kanban boards. Kanban boards are a
really great way to track projects through
the project life cycle. Kanban boards allow you
to set up columns that represent a specific phase
of that project cycle. And they use these
cards to represent each part project or
part of a project. The process to
create a camera on board in Notion is
really straightforward. So just click new page. On here. You can see there is an option
for board. We clipboard. What do you want
to view as a bode? Well, we've not
made anything yet, so you would just
click New dead space. There's your basic Kanban
board straight off the cuff. That's how easy it is.
It's already made for you. All you've got to do is
just fill these cards in. This Kanban board. Let's call it orders. Then down yet we'll
have got to order. And it's as simple as that. Now these are null status, so they could just be things that you've
written off the cuff. But what I actually
prefer to do is just get that the way or in fact, I think you can hide it. That's it. That's how
you make a kanban board. Now, all you need to
do is to click New. Let's type in pens,
pencils, etc.. And if you actually
click that, eats a page, you see just like
everything else, you can open it as a page and you can put
pictures in there. You can put links in there, anything, whatever you want to. The way that I've set
mine up is in a page. I've got my orders. Then my Kanban boards
actually down here. And as you can see, it used quite often. The way that I use is
I would click New. I would type in what I want. So let's call it pencils again. That's when that's
like my initial stage. Once I've passed it on to the technicians by e-mail or no, or sometimes word of
mouth, but not very often. Olive pot folded to technicians. Might check later on with them, later on that week whether
they'd ordered it. And if they have, then I
will put it on ordered. And then once it is here, I'll put it on arrived. I'll leave it on there
for a bit general air and then once it's been on
there for long enough, I will drag it to archived. Another kanban board is
in my technicians tasks. I will click New, fix,
pillar, drill, choke. That's just when I'm
stream of consciousness. When it when it pops up, I'll just nip to
my mobile phone, I'll fill it in on there. And then later on when
I've told him about it, I'll drag it to the
same folded to Lee. And then when it's
done, I'll put it uncompleted and when
it's being completed, I'll generally put it on
archive bit later on. I've got a table
view so that you can actually see when
the job was created, what status it's currently at, whether whether they're on our technicians.
Absolutely amazing. So they all basically go
straight to the archive. And that's that. Sometimes you'll say
I'll do it Thursday. And that's why I've
got a due date. So we can put it in
put it in on Thursday. But generally, I don't need to use any of this other stuff. And I just find using this
board itself much easier. Also within my
technician column, there is data tables
have designed for parts to each and every project
for OLS has tens of parts. These in the past have
been filled in on paper, audit forms, word of mouth, or email towards the ends of projects or score
years when we need to. Being very inconsistent. If however, you
create an itinerary, equipment or parts list
that contains links, photos, and all the
details are instructions. It reads that need to
redo this year upon year, and then he has direct access
to read from your database. And the best approach
is to have it all sorted and organized inertia. So to summarize this video, I think it's really
good idea to use Kanban boards to track
your orders and jobs. It's also a good idea to have a product kit list or uploaded so that when
something needs ordering, it makes it even easier to do. The contents of this
video, of course, are unique to my situation, but I really do hold
that within it. You can see details which
are actually transferable. Thank you ever so much
for watching this video. It's been a pleasure. I'll see you in the next one.
17. 2.10 - Admin: Hi guys. This is another one
of those nice short videos. It's really handy to have an admin section on
your teacher page where you can place
anything that isn't directly related to
your day to day role. So things that you
could place within it. Appraisal saw maybe linked
to past and present. School-wide documents such
as policies, diaries, assessments, ADLs,
department uniform guides, teaching and learning
frameworks, and so on. You could also place
your timetables, all rotations if that's
relevant to your department. Again, it's all right there it seemed one place on one page. So there's no head
into school servers or websites to find
this information. Obviously, everybody's
priorities here are going to be different. I'm not going into any
more detail about it. I just thought that you guys might benefit from
sharing that with you. I hope this has been
of some use tier onto the next video, which is the final part. Thank you very
much for watching.
18. 2.11 - Chain of Command: If you're new to a school or work in a school is
really, really big. You may not be able
to remember all of the staff and the
management and that roles, responsibilities, and
the contact details. At least that's what I've found. Now of course, when you
within the realm of teaching, you've got these chains
of responsibility. And people are obviously responsible for
different avenues. So there'll be some
that are responsible for safeguarding. There'll be behavior,
will be careers, and obviously need to know these people
and their details. So that should the need arise, you can go down the
correct chain of command. Of course, I'm teaching
you nothing new there. But what I actually do to sort of brought
this because I work in such a big score and the
roles are always changing that I can't always remember who's who and who's doing what. So what's really important
is that I've got access to that information and
it's usually sent to you at the beginning of the
year and it's in Latin, little file somewhere saved
on the school servers. They might have
e-mailed it you out. It can sometimes be a bit
long-winded nightmare, trying to find where
that firewalls or the e-mail that led
you to the file? Once I've found that, I
actually put that put the contact details into a link that I've
caught onto my space. But remember, we're trying to alleviate some of that
unwanted pressure. So it's really handy to
have a screenshot of this or at least a link to it in your nausea
workspace somewhere. So thank you very
much for watching. Part three will be
our concluding part, and it will include a bit
of support and information, a few tips that relevant to everything that we've
already gone through. Hopefully, I'll see
you on the other side. Thank you again. Goodbye.
19. 3.1 - Optimisation: Hey guys, welcome
to another video. This part is about how we might
optimize our workspace to help reduce that friction we talked about in our last video, just that little bit more. So looking over to
the sidebar then, well, the sidebar should
be as empty as possible. Everything in it
should be absolutely essential and necessary
for your goals. And remember he
priorities and how anything unnecessarily
makes a brain work. That a little bit harder. If you're not sure
what you should actually put in your favorite, then just leave that
empty for now and just let time dictate what pages
you visit continuously. The next things
that you can do to optimize a notion
workspace is to use tags and texts can be used
to help you track down whatever it is that you're looking for
with the search tool. By the way, there's a web
clip at all for notion that you just installed
into your browser whenever you are
visiting a website, instead of clicking that
favorites button or sharing or copying
and pasting links, you just click the
web clipper button. It will actually copy it over into Notion to wherever
you want it to be. And that is really, really handy to have, especially if you
put tags there, you're just taking
the content from it. The way that it works is
you would click the app. I've got this set so
that it will save into the Resonance
Calendar of mine. And all you would
need to do is click Add New Page is as easy as that. Then you can click
Open in Notion. There we have it.
It's actually saved this computer integrated
manufacturing page into my actual Resonance
Calendar in Notion. There it is with all the moving
pictures and everything, all of the info. There we go. Linked databases. We've already spoke about
this one, but where possible, try and link your
database is rather than making new ones for each and everything
that you need to do. The reason I would say this
is because if you've got some central database
that has got all sorts of different
bits and bobs on it. Well, if you add the filters, you can obviously only visualize whatever it is
that you need to say. However, if you wanted something deep down
in this database, you could just pull that up. If you've got
multiple databases, it might be alright if
you've got like one or two or three or maybe even five. But what I've actually
found in the past, if you make too many databases, you can't remember where it was. They might be something that
you were adamant was in a certain place and actually turns out to be in
this other place. You can use the Search option. But again, it's
just a little bit, it's a bit clunky. But that's just my
personal preference. Obviously, it's completely
up to you what you want to do it yourself or images
in place of words. If you're visual
like me, sometimes. Like, do you know how I've got my lessons from seven to 11? Well, instead of those headings, you can have a blank, completely blank white space. And for each year group, you could just have, I
don't know, five pictures? Yeah, 7891011. For each each one
of those pictures, you can make it
unique to yourself. And then you click it. It opens a page with all the E7 stuff on
it. Come back out. You're buying opens a page with all year all your year
eight stuff on it. The reason I didn't go down
that route was because just the very fact
that I had to go into a page to come
back out of it, to go into another page
to come back out of it. Especially. I just
found that for me I prefer to have
it all just right there, infinitely
various toggles. That's how obviously I've
shown you how to do it. But it is just an idea
that if you visual, you might find pictures and
a little bit better for you. You could also link other
apps to your actual space, such as your emails
and your registers. My school's Internet already has these on the school computers. So it's not something that
I personally need to do, but it would be a nice
feature to add if you needed to build in templates
for repetitive actions. If you find yourself
doing something like, let's just say like
an older form. And every single
time you fill in all the details in, well, you can actually make a
template that you can save so that the next time
that you need to do that task, you just tap the button
and away you go. Whereas this is the actual
templates button that's got whole template
pages in there that let's say you've got
like a diary page. Well, you can actually make
an actual template that if you press the button to
insert into your workspace, and let's have a
look at that now. Firstly, navigate to the place where you want the
template to actually be. We want ours and
our teaching page, but there's no use for it, just being right there. So we're going to head into our meetings page
that we made earlier. And we're going to head
into the notes section. Once you click that, you can see that it says right there, press Enter to continue with an empty page or
create a template. You just want to click the
create a template button. Now it says here at the top you're editing a
template in meetings. This area right now, I'll open it as a page. This is our template down here, and at the top
we're going to call the template. And that's that. Once we've finished,
you can just go back for this template
that's called notes. So if you click that button now, our template comes up. Next time what we are writing, you're going to click New. You can go into your notes. You can open it as
a page if you want, and you can click there. We have our template. Another way to create
a template is, as you can see down here, we don't have the
Add Template button. So if we wanted
to add a template to our main page like this, you just hit the forward slash and you type template button in. And then you name it again. So let's call it notes again. And down here, I want
to delete this to-do list and we want to
pull our content in. And then that's it. You just click away from it. You can click Close. And so now we've got a
template down there for knots. So when I click it, that appears another thing
that's really handy that I actually
found was backlinks. So if you could have your
entire workspace visualized, you'd actually find that
it's similar to a tree. You start out with
the big trunk, like your homepage, but
then that branches off, let's say into teaching. Then obviously
further and further until you are in this labyrinth. If you want to backup a little bit of
back-and-forth between pages, you can just use the back
button at the top of the page. Though, you pages
aren't always on that same branch and sometimes you don't want to
have to keep going back, back, back, back
until you get to a certain point to
go down that route. Instead, a way around this would be to
obviously put it in your favorites on the sidebar
or in the private section. The problem I found with this is that then gets cluttered up because you might go to these
regular pages all the time. They might be like a certain
fashion that you do it in. So for example, when I go to my to-do list that my personal
one away from teaching, I often find that I do my
to-do lists in the morning, but I also do my daily habit
tracker in the morning too. I actually have them in the
sidewalk season that often. But before I put
them in the sidebar, I actually put back links
on the top of each page. So I farm in the to-do list, I can just click habit tracker. And if I'm in the habit tracker, I can just click To Do List. Same goes for, I've
actually got this in my teaching area, the
technician section. So what usually when
I'm doing technician, he related things, I'm putting down things that
need to be ordered. I might also go, oh, there's a job there as
well for the technician. And I can just click on
the technician at the top and jump straight
to his page without having to go back out
and then back in again. I hope that makes sense. Okay. Another one. I think I mentioned
this a few times, but having a hold where
all of your pages a cat. So instead of making pages
within pages and losing them, just like the sort of databases that are
telling you about. You just add all these
pages to the hold. And then when you're in the page that you're
actually wanting to be in, say a teacher page, you link to a page rather than having the actual page
in your workspace. Does that make sense? So you would have a hold full of actual light
originals if you will. And then in your actual
pages so that teacher page, you would have links to those rather than the
actual pages there. And if we didn't do this, then our pages would
be scattered across many different pages and it would make them harder to find and it would be a little
bit less consistent. I think another handy tip would be to have hidden columns that contain necessary
but unnecessary to see all the time things. This is similar to what
I've mentioned before in a database where you don't necessarily need to see all of the information
all of the time. So yes, you may have this incredibly large
and diverse database. But if it was all visible, other than looking impressive, it would actually be kind of useless and clog up the screen. And it would make
you have to hunt around for that information. It makes sense then I think
to have a lot of this hidden. And here's how to do it on
to hover over your table. And then the top right, you'll see three dots on there. You can click that
shown in table one. Now, we've only just made this, and obviously we've only
put what we need in there. If for whatever reason you
wanted to Nazi some of this, then you would just click the eye and it would
make it invisible. While I found this useful for in the past is when we've
been showing somebody something with more
sensitive information on it. So things that I don't
necessarily want people to see. And I would just
click the i guys, that is the end of this video. Thank you so much for spending this time with
me, my little van, and for looking at my ugly mug with my tentacle teeth
and my crazy hair. Yeah. I shall see you in the next one.
20. 3.2 - Embedding: Guys, Nice to see you. Welcome back to me a little van. He might have heard
of embedding before. I've certainly mentioned
it a few times in this actual black course. But if you haven't,
it means to place content into your workspace
instead of just linking it. Power of embedding
in Notion is great. Say you find a YouTube
video that you want to watch and use via class. Well, the relevant lesson, you just put an embed play directly from notion instead of having to load up YouTube. So that's a lot quicker. Embedding websites is an
absolute game changer. It really is within
your Notion workspace. If you embed a website, that website is
literally in your page, you can place your mouse over the Embed and literally
flipped through their website without
ever having to actually go onto the
Internet browser. This saves a tremendous
amount of time. It's useful for things
like timers and calculate as to if you place an embedded
link to either of those, then there on your page. And that's that it gives
you incredible freedom. Because what it does is reduce
that friction even more. So it means that you don't have to have
everything downloaded, saved, uploaded into nausea and, or having multiple tabs open
on a browser where you're flicking from browser
to back to our video, back to your PowerPoint, images or maps or online
storage such as Google Drive. You can actually have
your Google Drive in your actual notion that has got basically
your whole file system that you can access direct. You can even embed the
Google homepage and search directly from within
nursing if you really wanted. So you've got you've got
everything in one place. It really is great.
Here's how to do it. If we hit the forward slash AMI, click em bed, you can
click Google Maps there. Now it's asking you
for an embed link. If we head over to these many websites
that we do with this, I've gone to embed Google Map, dotnet, type in whatever it
is that you're looking for. Then you click Get
HTML code, copy it, and paste that into the, there we go. We've got a map. Now, you can obviously
resize this. Look however you want,
forward slash embed again. And there you can
see it'll drive. You can choose where
you Google Drive is, and then you can select
the folder, the file, wherever it is that you want
to share with yourself. Let me just, I'll
just share a PDF. You can actually share
the whole folder, but that's how we would share
the PDF that popped up. You go down on a YouTube
video and we click Share. You can get the
Embed link there. Again, copy it. Notion, paste it into there, and click Embed link. There we have the video. Anyway, that is all
for this video. Thank you so much
for stopping by really is an honor to be able
to do with this full year. And I'll see you
in the next one.
21. 3.3 - Appraisals: Hello and welcome to another
video in this course. And using Notion
within teaching, this will be a kind of
short one about appraisals. If you had to pass a course on your journey to
become a teacher, then you've more than likely at some point had to gather and develop a portfolio of evidence to support your
role and your learning. Usually there are observations done by mentors and
other teachers. There's essays and exams, and then there's the
actual portfolio of proof, you evidence of
what you've done in relation to the teacher
standards, for example. And this helps paint a picture
of your progress to you superiors so that they
can judge here and so on. Back when I was at university, it was referred to as a PDP. So that's like professional
development portfolio, whatever it's called,
where you are. I'm sure you can relate and
understand how one's created. Usually you're given target and you work on accomplishing
them by taking falls, collecting references
and work you've created. If you move away from university
and start an actual job, you'll realize that it
didn't actually end there. There are those things
that we call appraisals. Whichever school, Europe,
it makes sense to gather evidence
for your targets, doing it within areas
actually perfect for this. Because whether you upload files directly to
the app itself, all linked to elsewhere, It's really handy having
you work on demand, again in the same place
as everything else. Some of the benefits of
saving your evidence here is that you can
easily search for it. Should you employ a
request specific items, you can make it short the created and last
update at a time. And that'll really
help support you to. You can show previous
versions of the page, which means that you
can evidence how you've progressed
throughout the year. And of course, you can include
links and photos files. Of course you'll do
they say exactly how you choose to do it. And it's completely
up to yourself. Merely pint in the
finger here at what you could do with
it if you really wish. As always, guys, thanks very much for listening
to this video. I'll see you in the next one.
22. 3.4 - Parents Evening: Parents evenings. Wow, they're tiring,
aren't they? Don't get me wrong. It's often an eye-opening
and humbling evening. And I love getting to
meet all the parents. And I see it as
quite a privilege. But boy, oh boy, we're not usually at our
best around that time, our rumbling Belize and
maybe 14 hours behind us, it can be really hard to focus and be on top of your game. I'm I wrong? One thing I think we could probably
all benefit from here is a little bit
of a guiding compass. Now of course, we're all different and I'm sure
there are those of you out there that have little to no interest in
structure in such a thing. I've been doing
this seven years. And I still find
myself a little bit on confident and
nervous and find that I'm nipping over to
blogs and other websites with other good ideas on how to be an effective parents
evening host. I'd also ask colleagues about how they were going
to approach this. And maybe some of
the things that they are planning on
saying, it's one thing, blogging it to your pupils
that you might get away with, but it's probably not going to cut it here with the parents. I think building a place
within the notion workspace here could be really
beneficial to your practice. So how then could
we structure this? Well, my main concern when parents evening rolls around is the pressure of making
parents feel that their child is known
and the supported. They want to know what they're
getting up to in class. But the problem is, I teach around 400 pupils are weak
and 80 per cent of them, I only have a one
hour once a week. It's not always easy
remembering names, the person themselves
and their peculiarities. And I think teachers normally counter this by
relying on their data. I've heard teachers talking
to the parents as if their child is a cog in
an engine, a statistic. The data really is
important, of course, but these parents
have come to find out about their children
who arguably spend more time at school than at
home in the waking hours, at least as a parent myself, I'd like to know all
about their day, their relationships, their
effort and their behaviors, and of course, their friends
and their assessment data. I therefore try to make
sure that I gather as much evidence as I can
about them before going in. This stuff can take up a considerable amount
of mental energy. It makes sense then to
reduce our workflow, we want to have a clear goal for each child and their parents. So my preparation
goes like this. I have a link to the data and have a link to
their appointments. Beneath is, I'll have my
plan of how each meet him or go a framework with
a clear beginning, a middle, and an end. This framework usually include any details or facts
about the course or anything in relation to potential answers to
questions that might arise, as well as links to booklets
and projects that I can show the parents had also have links
to assessment grids, curriculum roadmaps, and
other things relevant to the year group that I'm doing
the parents evening for. So if it's for Key
Stage four for example, I might even have links
to light employers, careers fairs, local further
education providers. Beside this, I've actually
also found it useful to include a list of sentence
starters and speeches, a list of adjectives, strengths, weakness, areas for development. I know that's kind of
cheating a little bit, but sometimes all it takes
is one little kind of glands down and write at the top
of the page somewhere. I'll usually have
a set of reminders and values to help keep me on track of what parents
evenings really about. You could embed a time are also in there if you
really wanted to. I'm always really
amazed how some of the other more
experienced teachers flow effortlessly through all
of the right things with an amazing vocabulary
and they're able to navigate
conversations with ease. Of course, we're
all very different. And this sort of thing
comes with experience. Whereas one person might be naturally methodical
and calculated. Others, others may be more expressive and impulsive and make things up as we go along. I think a subtle mix of
the two is probably best. And hopefully what we've
discussed here will go into some way of helping
you accomplish this. Thank you very much for
watching this video, guys. We're almost at the
end of this course. If you think this is
gonna be something that's really useful
for yourself, then I'm just really glad that I could help out in that. I'll see you in the next one.
23. 3.5 - School Journal: Hi guys, Welcome to this video. Thanks very much
for coming back. This one's going to be a
little bit of a long-winded, more seriously kind of video
about the school journal. So why? Why would you want
a school journal? How do I explain this? We'll start with how it could be used in your own role first, and then I'll branch
off and give you my personal reasons for choosing
to have a score journal. First and foremost,
it can be used to track and monitor
your progress, conversations to help you in building a portfolio
of evidence, to using your
favorite when you're applying for an extra roles within school or positions that are higher on
the career ladder, it can be optimized
with templates and filters in order to show
off you in the best light. It also looks really
professional. Secondly, though,
it's a bit dark. But I'm going to be
really honest here. I have to give you
my own reasons for starting this journal out. Of course not been mentioned
in any names or schools, as this will be extremely
unprofessional. It's my story and I believe
that he's a tail worth telling in case you have been through something
similar yourself. Some departments in
schools can be extremely supportive of one
another. There's not. So I've experienced the latter more times than a character. Remember within this
teaching environment, I hope that's not
true for yourselves. Slt, That's the senior
leadership team and middle management can sometimes
have a bit of an agenda. Now please bear with me. I know this sounds a little
bit so a conspiracy theorist, I've actually heard out of the horse's mouth
that schools have agendas from unions and from
high up members of staff. I know that this sort
of thing goes on. It may be nothing personal. But if you find yourself part of one of
these bigger plans, paper trails can be made
that conspire against you. I've personally been victim to this kind of treatment
and have had to deal with very sneaky
and toxic politics, felt very threatened. Informal meetings
that are in fact very formal when you go in and
you're completely unprepared, only to be met with a cast of different characters like
the head, the deputy head, the EHR, somebody taking
notes in the back, Questions can pop up that
you weren't prepared to answer in an attempt not to look like you
don't want to answer, you answer with information that could be further targeted. This might lead you into extra CPD cut hours or more hours. There could be many things that could be an outcome to that. I have seen and know
of colleagues that go from comfortable cemented
positions within the school. Being told there is no
job for you next year, completely out of the blue. The stress and politics del, to a member of staff
in this situation is often kept very
discreet and very quiet. It's kind of one of those things where people know
it is happening, but nobody really shares that information because
it's unprofessional. And it often comes
out in light, sorry, passive aggressive, leaving speeches and
things like that. I've personally experienced,
my efforts would work and answers been twisted
and turned into formal concerns
before my very eyes. Once a situation such
as this has arisen, emails and monitored
very closely, conversations, actions
around school. Data less than
performance, planning, clocking in and out
and feeling threatened can seriously impact
all of these. If you falter is pounds down and used for
evidence that you aren't performing is one
reason to use this journal. However, you may have also been dealing with
bullying at work. I've also dealt with
this two and found that if I recorded notes of what
was said that when the house, the y's and the details that I personally felt much
more comfortable. And I've obviously gone a
long time without doing this. And it's kind of come back
and bit me a little bit. So since Diana, I've done this school journal about
a log of everything that's happened at my own and as my own peer portrayal
of evidence to support me it with images,
screenshots, whatever. Just remember to stick within that GDPR policy
and notions roles. So unfortunately,
the school journal actually stems from negative
beginnings for myself, I hope that those
of you watch it and haven't experienced any of
what I've just mentioned. If you have, you'll know exactly where I'm
coming from and how these peer portrayals
are created against. Yeah, and so my sort of fight back to that because he can't just start shouting about it, is to build your
own peer portrayal of evidence to support you. If anything like this
ever comes up, ever. You've got evidence to prove what you were
doing with your time, how much work you've done, the quality of your
work when you did it, how you did it, etc. It really, really does
make you feel much better. That the same goes for
conversations as well. I've been in rooms
where people have said things that they shouldn't really shouldn't have
been saying to me. Felt disempowered and
weak and pathetic, powerless, needed
a way to get that, that feeling away because
you would have that happen. And then immediately go to the next lesson where you've got these beautiful
young children all staring at you with
glistening eyes. You know, waiting
to be inspired. And you've gone into that
room with all the baggage. So yeah, it's really, really handy having a place
to just get that out. Hopefully you might
never need to use it. I've realized it's just best
to spend those few minutes a day logging your
daily actions to cover your own trucks and
look out for yourself. Hopefully, than need
will never arise for you to actually
use this journal. But if it did, you've got a huge body of evidence
to support your career. Now, even if you did try to use any of these in
a formal situation, they'll probably only take it as informal evidence anyway, because it's your
word against theirs and it will likely hold emotional power that might not necessarily show
the true happenings in the best light. I don't know if that
makes any sense to you. All the things that you
could truck compliments. I got a lot of compliments
from the pupils and I really love to keep track of them because it really warms your heart when if
somebody comes up and tells you that you're their
best teacher and they'll love your lessons and he's really
got to hold onto that. Clean and tidy and all of your daily tasks that
include where you worked, what on, and at what times. So for example, if
you sneak off into the room T4 and get on with some work in one of your free
periods during your day. If just not that down on what
you were doing, concerns. If there are any
concerns whether you've witnessed something
or somebody said something, not about the pupils, of course, like cut more concept
per personal concerns. Then obviously write
that in there. Remember you don't have to
be really careful with how you report things and not to put names and
whatnot in there. Conversations that
you have where people don't need to do that. Obviously, it's something
I'm throwing your way. What you've done in
your personal time. So our breaks and lunches
before and after scores, any value that you've added. So like if you fixed a machine or if you've door or whatnot, or if you've done
something worth mentioning to sing your
praises, put that in there. You can use the school journal to help you with your memory. If you just jot down notes, where would you put
the skull journal? I personally put
it on the sidebar. Got good access to it there. You want it to be
immediately reachable. Because if you if somebody's
just said something, somebody just happened, if
you don't want to have to go looking for the school journal,
believe me, I've tried. If you've just got it
just there, right. Friendly face. You've already unknown
and you already doing you at wherever, click it. You just type in
whatever it is that you need to fill in there
and then when it's fresh. So how would you do it?
Well, I've made it into a database and I've got
three columns on Sure. Okay guys, so here is
the skull journal. It's very basic which needs to be as it's usually
completed when you're in a bit of a rush in-between
lessons or whether what I've actually done is
created a table in a page. I have added the created date and multi-select tags, nots it. Now the only other thing that I have done is when I click new, I've made a template that is
called school task template. Each day when I come
in in the morning, I will open this up and I'll
click school tasks template. And then I'll just put
something like that in. And then down below, I have got once again our task list database
or the EHRs that created these for today on
the status is a school task. That's it. I have got now
inside my school journal. Today, I have got the I arrived at 750 and I have
refilled my snake box. You can use this as
your task list instead of the one that's on the
teacher page if you want. What I've also done is
in my personal area. I've actually got a
completed this week and a completed today area. If I click complete it today, everything that is being completely today will
show up in there. Let's click that off, refilled the snake mark. There you go. I use it for doing
tasks like that. But I also use it for
notes, a complement, especially that, but although
that and I'll call it a compliment, that's that. Now if I removed these three
roles on the skull journal, you would actually find
that it's insanely fault. Things like free concerns,
value-added compliments, collaborative practice,
games, PDP, personal time. I've got all these things. So if I ever want to search
for a certain thing, let's say complements, all of the compliments
will pop up. That's all for this video, guys. Thank you so much. Once again, it was a bit of a long-winded and a bit
or anymore original one. And it was another big reason as to why I felt like I needed
to share this with you. I really do think it'll
be useful for yourselves. Unfortunately, schools
are rife with politics and it is one of those things that can eat your pin
side and stress you out. And obviously you don't
want to be taken that stress home to your family because then you're
gonna be losing that rapport that
you've built with them and the respect
and the love, and you're going to just not gonna be the best
version of yourself. And you're gonna take that back the next day and then the next. And it can eat you up
to the point where you end up needing
time off of work to recover from stress and
anxiety. He's just not good. It's not good. Having this school
journal has actually helped me a massive
amount with things that have gone on in school
regarding politics and Boolean. Yeah. Thank you very much for
watching guys do appreciate it. I hope you found some value
within that for yourself. I'll see you in the next one.
24. Conclusion: Hi guys, Welcome. You've made it to the
end of this journey. This is the conclusion.
It's been a long one. It's taken me a
long time to film. My eyes probably grown
like a good inch or two since I first
started filming. And I just really just
wanted to say thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Honestly. This is my first
ever Skillshare course. I realized there's been a lot of bits that probably could
have been a lot better. And hopefully, I've improved
gradually as I've come on. So yeah, my intention
was to try and make this try and make your lives
that little bit easier. And hopefully I've done that and hopefully you
guys feel that you've come away with some of
them after watching this course and it's not
being a waste of your time. I would absolutely
love to hear from you as a thank you for getting
to the end of this course. I have popped my
full template in the downloads bit for you to use it to your
heart's content. It might not be perfect
for your own practice, but it might help me start. Thank you all very
much for watching. See you around.
