1. Course Overview & Introduction: Hello, my name is Christina and I'll be your instructor, both serve pop holes. Now I completely understand you might be a bit hesitant to enroll in this course and bio because you don't actually know what it covers. So this video will just give you a bit of an overview of what we will cover that you can decide whether this course is for you or not. In this course you will learn how to make natural and Reagan friendly. So pause from scratch. So it's not a mountain whole-class. You'll be making so from scratch, using the raw ingredients. First, we'll discuss the ingredients that you need to make certain the first place and that safety associated with those ingredients. Next, we will cover the tools and equipment you need to make. So what you can and cannot use. Going to explain the method first and then I'll demonstrate that method. But this course is not just about seeing how it's done. We go quiet in depth into theory, discussing various aspects of self-making. I'll also cover cutting and caring goes so hard it cuts is hot. But how long to cure the circle? Another valuable lesson that you'll learn in this course, it's hard to actually formulate your Earn Serve recipes yourself. So you don't have to rely on someone else's recipe, LACMA recipe on other risk P final blog, you'll understand ingredients so well, and I'll teach how to use a Serb calculators that you can actually experiment with your own recipes. And lastly, I'm going to cover some frequently asked questions and a little bit of troubleshooting. So for example, how do you layer, Sir? How do you make soap with MOOC or how do you make soap with honey? How do you, or can you reduce the pH absurd bars. And just some of the frequently asked questions that I'll be covering in the course. But that is a brief overview of everything that I'll be covering, ingredients and safety tools and equipment. Recently formulation, I'll demonstrate and explain the method and some FAQs and troubleshooting. If that sounds like just what you're looking for, enjoin me endless course. I look forward to teaching you and I promise you you'll never pass that. Reagan.
2. Soap Bar Lesson 1: Ingredients and Safety: And welcome to natural nerd online, soap course, and glad to have you here will start the course with the safety. And the three essential ingredients to make cr towards her well and something a lot of people call line. First of all, you need to scale because it's basically like a chemistry class. This is a chemical reaction. After all, chemical reactions, calls upon application, is I'm going to speak about each ingredient separately, the safety considerations and the property that you will need to consider for each the first ingredient them to speak about is lie. Just so I can get this theory say to talk out the way it is my intention scaling. But, but don't worry, like this is not dangerous if you just listen to what I say, it gets all the safety protocols and just have some common seeing rising rates in scale thing. The first ingredient lie is also known as quote the coda. Now beta ij is pumped out of your head and you wondering, isn't caustic soda when I used to keep my drains with yep. It'll does unnatural soap or ports. Yep. Why they take is they cosx. So so far, how can that be safe? While I show you that it is completely safe because so to making is a chemical reaction. So sometimes you making a cake and you mixing flour, water, eggs, whatever's made him a cake. And when you finish scraping, I think is still left with Flour, Water it so whatever cake is not to do it. In chemistry, when you add the raw ingredients together, they all react with one another and they form a completely new product. That is what happens in serves. You might use water, oil in caustic soda to begin with, but the gains you don't end up with either end up with boards in earnings, upward oil, you don't end up with caustic soda. When you add caustic soda to water and oil with Keep, the end product is salt. So interestingly, nasa table salt, it's a different harnessed salt or sodium salt. But that's what she lived with it the aims not lift with oil, water or post etcetera. Ok, so a reasonable cost, six studies there so that he can set quantifier, the foil will turn into cert. So some people asked me or have even Google, can you make soap without sodium hydroxide or can you make surplus outline the answer is no. You might see some people making. So what, what they are doing is actually using a molten pool, so, which has already been made with flour. And it's just a few things have been added to that serves. It can just melt very easy and important to mold and front making. So that's just re-melting someone else who did make sir with law. And if you wanna make sir from scratch, we absolutely have to use caustic soda. It just to recap, caustic soda. Some people call it live, but that's not really the technical term I'll explain a little bit later. For caustic soda, I itself is toxic. But insert when measured accurately, these Contiki safe. And it's actually a necessary part of the chemical reaction to make some. Second ingredient is water. The base voltage we use is distilled water. And let's be honest, you can use absolutely any water or make soap with tap water and stream water and damn moves all the time. But just bear in mind that because this is a chemical reaction, water that's coming out of the dam would stream women attack with other things added to it. So those things contributed chemical reaction to this day, nothing happened to me, my surface never going to flop. But if you really want to be careful to have everything a 100%, so based wanted to use it to sole daughter. In soap making, we add the caustic soda to water. But that solution we would add up the hosting service to Watson. Now remember cozy service also notice sodium hydroxide, so you might hear me interchange to that solution is known as line. You never added the other way around adding water to the sodium hydroxide. Please always add the sodium hydroxide slowly to the water. But anyway, we'll get to the method later. That solution is known as line. Now just be aware that when you on other blogs or news looking at other recipes or just hearing other people speak about. So pay US law interchangeably with the word hosting site or sodium hydroxide. So you might see a recipe that calls for 200 grams of lie, but what they actually mean is the white powdery substance, but it's caustic soda. But technically the solution when sodium hydroxide is added to the water depth. So just be aware of that misperception and be careful that you don't weigh 200 grams of actual live the way that they're using it for just the white powdery spots. So now we're going to add the course of sorts of awards. A chemical reaction takes place. That reaction has learned as an exothermic reaction. And basically what that means is that it generates heat. So if you touch the outside of the bowl, but who could really, really hot and you'll also see some fumes developing. This water can get to boiling point just below just at boiling point. So never ever touch what's inside. Never touched a lot. But even if it was hold, should never ever touch the line because it is a very caustic substance. You will suffer chemical burn. When you do that step of adding the course Excited to the wards are T's always do it outside in a well ventilated areas away from your kids, away from their children. Be careful not to inhale the fumes. And like when I say fumes, I don't mean a volcano of fumes. It'll be very, very gentle fumes like a steam coming off a cup of coffee. We might not even see it, but you will, your body will start coughing if you've been hailed a little bit of it. So just be careful not inherited are always just step away, turn around and take a deep breath, fresh air behind me, and then come back and stood in line. But what if you spoke? What if you spilled a lie? What if you accidentally touch the line? I'm just gonna go over the safety precautions of them. First of all, rents immediately with Cole Porter being rents or y with Monica, cold water will just help the pH come down a little bit because course excels at pH of 14 water, the pH of sales or just helps the pH come down just a little bit, then vinegar is an acid, so it's the very opposite of caustic, and it has a pH of three, so it just helps completely neutralize the loss or runs of water and want with Vanessa. Please just be very careful when working with line around to children mp3's. You always want to do is outside. When you've added that caustic soda oil, potassium hydroxide it making liquid served to the water and all become murky at first and cloudy. But once the chemical reaction is completed looks exactly like water. So donate your children, be around and they may be mistakenly think that it's wat and stupid because I think it's water or your kids for that matter. When Ly is ingested is lethal, it's so cost equal burn through the body of case. So that's why it is really, really important for you to be aware of your surroundings. Rather just clear the area and make sure you're kids are nowhere to be found when you're making. So when you're done with that step, then everyone can come back in because no one's gonna mistake anything for water. But just never touch the line if inhale the fumes and never let anyone in Jason's. Now probably really scared you often you thinking or should never enrollment schools and neighborhoods such insert because it just sounds way too scary. But just remember that that is actually my intention. Yeah, I am fine to scale you into safety because if you are scared, you will be careful. Okay. So once you've seen me make the soap, t's, just continue with this course. We want you seen him make the serve and how simple it is. You'll think, you know, it's really not that difficult and it's really simple. All other introduces, be careful, okay, so it's just I have to do this safely talk with you and if have to scale to be careful then fun, because I'd rather nothing happened and I want you to have fun. And once you get the hang of it, you won't even have to think about it. A circle just become second nature. Okay? So it's just like anything, just like you shouldn't touch a hot stove, you know, that might sound scary, but it shouldn't scare you off, not cook anymore. Okay. So just stay with the safety took that has to be done. I'm assuming because you enrolled in this course that this is your first time making serve. So if it is your first time, and I do recommend wearing long sleeves, learnings, a nice pulls the damages for clothes and not your skin. Where the safety goals, where the safety gloves way the safe to mask. Okay. That'll make you feel better. Once you see me makes up, you'll see that. Really don't need to be careful. That's for you to decide. But I do recommend wearing all the safety gear. So just as a little bit of a recap, never touch course exerted the dry powder or the line. Not just because it generates heap, but because it is also caustic substance that will chemically burn your skin. Okay. Never inhale to try not to inhale the few that come off of it while taking deep breaths away, just stepping away to gain deep breath. Okay. Being aware of where the wind is blowing, never leave the lie and attained it around you're paid to the children will mistake it for water. If you accidentally touched the lives, of course, Excel or somebody else does, it spills on them or something. Just remain calm. Don't panic because it's not gonna work very false documents immediately stop melting through your skin and it takes a really long time to have any effect. First you start to feel itchy and your skin starts to read, and then that h becomes really unbearable. So you'll definitely know that you've touched live caustic soda. So we need to realize that just calmly walked to a cold waters have ordained for Han and cold water based and the chmod have nearby. They walk with vinegar. Rinse with water. I put vinegar. I normally have a bottle of omega around and I have a big ball of water in the sink. I have affiliate with water and put some black couple two or vinegar in this R can just immediately like put my hands in the sink if I spin the touch it, but like I said, it's not gonna happen immediately. You'll feel that HTML. No. Okay. Let me put my hands in the water. Okay. So that's the scale we say we took out of the way. Now the moving onto the latter part of the lesson, and I'll be speaking about the third ingredient, which is, well, it's nothing scary about oil except never overheated and touch it because it will burn you. But I think everybody knows that, right? So Let's speak about oil. Each one has its own properties now. And I say properties around mean therapeutic properties. You might be a way of sweet almond oil being good for eczema and dry skin. Ok, so I've got the kind of thing I'm speaking about. I mean, properties specifically that it brings to serve. But for example, the recipe that I'll be doing in this course, we'll be using coconut oil and sunflower. It will be given to you later on in a label isn't ok, but just to illustrate the different properties of oils can bring to serve. Coconut oil. Coconut oil if it's a use a 100% coconut worlds make. So we'd have a brilliant watch barf soap. It would be super hard, incredibly bubbly, not very moisturizing, maybe a little bit dry, sir, drying. So in that sense would actually be very good for cleaning household cleaning, walking counters, dishes, that sort of thing. In all instances of oils, my personal recommendation is to use the cheapest oil you can find. Because they've absolute, makes nursing's to buy extra virgin cold press coconut oil, olive oil, whatever oil you want to use, because it is completely destroyed in the baking process with the heat biochemical aligned being used. In continuing the story or that quality, Roddick, save your expensive high-quality oils for creams or lotions and things like that. Massage boils to put in your boss. Don't waste money buying expensive oils for serve because you really do destroyed if it's not the heat that destroys the minister chemical reaction that destroys all those good qualities bar the cheapest work because all it's going to happen that was going to turn to serve. If you had to use coconut oil be really hard cleansing bubbly and white. Sunflower oil, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. And a b and very soft ball almost Patty soft or to be offline by almost one yellow but like an AIG, AIG walk-ins, really incredibly moisturizing, so really good for your skin in that scenes. But it also have a really, really long curing time. Now curing time just means the time required for the soap making reactions you complete with co-processor making, which is what we're learning in this course. The slope is not really to be used immediately. It has to cure because the chemical reaction is still taking place even once you've taken it out of its mode. If you have an oil that is liquid at room temperature. That course was sunflower oil, olive oils we element well, Gracie oil, they're all liquid at room temperature. That will all produce a very, very soft bark. So plug mystic soft, you might not even be able to get it out of the mold offer 24 hours remarked away. It's an entire week just so that it's a little bit hot enough to actually push out a mall without deforming. But the plus side of that syrup is that it's incredibly moisturizing. So you might have to wait months, months for secure, not for the CERC reactions to complete necessarily, but just for water to evaporate out of the Serbs, just hard enough to use and it doesn't disintegrate in the Bosch and you try to use it. We all know those circuits that just turn to mush, okay? But on the other hand, you get to use coconut oil would be solar-powered, would not turn to mush, to carrying Tom would ever be ready within days, which would come out of a mode within 12 hours to 24 hours and carrying it near minimum, minimum suffering of one week. There is a fee would be using in this course and I'll be demonstrating and explaining in a later lesson, combines the best of both worlds because I wasn't a soapbox to be hard, not disintegrate in the shower. I wanted to moisturize, must give enough stroke my skin once. A lot of bubbles. So I do one, some of the coconut oil and some of the sunflower oil. So 60-40 recipe, 60% coconut oil because I wanted to be more HOD and when I wanted secure quickly and just 40% of the sunflower oil so I can get those moisturizing benefits out of him. Answer this not so hot that it's made to wash dishes now motion was skin with it. Oils that are solid at room temperature. Now, room temperature might be a bit of a relative term because coconut oils melting point, I think is 24 degrees celsius. So if it's 24 degrees, which is easily reached inside Africa, it will definitely be liquid. Those whales that are solid when it's cooler temperatures like coconut oil, all of those oils will make really hard Basel, so really badly bars of soap very quick to unfold and to cure. But on the downside, there'll be drawn into your skin's. You'll want to add something, a liquid oil just to balance it out and make it more moisturizing. A popular so planed, not one that I use, but a lot of people do use and they say really makes it good. Balanced parser is a coconut oil, palm oil oil, I think equal parts. They say it just makes the base into his moisturizing and hardness and ugliness. I've stayed far away from Palm. Well, many of you might know why, but for those of you don't. And contributes to deforestation of our rain forests exploits Indonesian people, and it's just not a sustainable ingredients and even a bit wary of labels that say that it's promised sustainable palm oil plantation because some countries are going on country Martin have strict labeling policies or I'd rather just stay away from home. Well, in general, has, because it's not a sustainable ingredient, but that's a very popular circling. Another popular soap oil is olive oil. Some of you might have heard of Castillo, sir, and that's liquid surplus. So pause. Castile soap is actually just a Serb made a 100% olive oil. A lot of people misuse determined just think that Cass still serve means just natural serve. So that actually means is certain made with a 100% olive oil. So even see some brand that's called themselves cast steel. So you'll turn around look ingredients and it seems that they've used quantified coconut extract, which is coconut oil, sunflower oil, whole host of oils. And it's not actually can still serve anymore. Cast steel is the region in Spain were originated and directly refers to serve make a 100% olive oil. But now just imagine that on a well is liquid. So what's the even against? It's going to be incredibly soft. Take, for instance, to unfold because it's so soft. It, it'll be like Prezi, you can just leave a fingerprint Zynga soap. So it has to kick off a six minus two just so that enough water can evaporate out of the soap so that it can harden enough to be able to be sold and packaged. And it's like cast steel surface is associated a 100% olive oil.
3. Soap Bar Lesson 2: Tools and Equipment: Hello and welcome to listen to this. Listen, I'll be teaching about the tools and equipment that you need to make. So, so check if you have these at home or make a list of what you really need to get. First, you'll need a stainless steel pot. You cannot use any other major parts. You can't use an enum minium Patna conscious cause ion. You will corrode those parts, will damage the soap annual path and you don't wanna be destroying your products across lines. Have the same COP not big enough for the circuit you're going to make to serve that I'm making in this course. And the receipt that you will get in this course is for 750 grams of salt. Sir. It is big enough. You might want to double up the recipes so you'll need a postdoc oversize, sickened. We all need ceramic or Gloss bowls that are microwave safe, dishwasher safe. He proof. In all regards, even normally the bowl Sandy need whether it's microwave safe and dishwasher safe. The reason being is remember I told you that once you add the course exerts the water. It's an exothermic reaction which generates heat. So it needs to be able to withstand that wailing heat because it's a chemical you just wanted to be as hot as possible. So only glosses, ceramic, only heat proof glass and ceramic. You'll also need stainless steel. Everything that touches the soap and aligns to me stainless steel, God's stainless steel spirits to mix the lies Mixosaurus mixture. You might want to have a it's not absolutely necessary silicone spatula just to scrape all your soap mixture out of your life. But you can also use your standard steel spoon. That's absolutely not necessary are just it's brought in, you know, supporting video. And you'll also need a blender. You can't do this by hand. You might be able to do creams, lotions by hand, but you cannot do it by hand. You'll be whisking, blending for the whole day and I'm only exaggerating. You need to be lending and mixing, collecting hours or more. And you don't need to have a fancy strong Linda for soy bars. You want even struggled one for liquid soap because it gets so thick and tough to blink. Or for soap bars, any blenders really fine. I think the most common ones on the market or 250 watts. That's fine for cert making. I do recommend though, that you get a blender with stainless steel blade and one that doesn't have some funny plate at the back where things can get stuck behind. That's especially important if you're going to be using the same Linda food anthracite making. So a lot of people ask me, can I use the same stuff to cook and to make? So yes, use at keener properly and eat soup out of the same pot that I make cert. Okay, it's completely safe if you clean your equipment properly. And that just means rinsing them thoroughly with water, then wanting everything with vinegar to neutralize any lie and been washing, I put dishwashing liquid as normalise you almost Washington three times. Once with water, a second time with when he got third time with normal dishwashing liquid. Once you've done that, it's completely safe to use for food and cooking again. But again, you can have a blazer with a funny plate behind, things might get stuck. So I've had a once a blender that had a place behind the blades and server. So make sure got stuck behind a and I once served soapy spinach soup Trapp family. So listen. Okay. If you have a blender with a plastic clay or not laid for their plastic aimed. That's fine too, because it's such a thick plastic and Berlant earn like wait on, detach the bottom part, often SAG, finish using it, put it in your water vinegar solution to neutralize it. You'll also need a scale. It doesn't have to be accurate to the mother granted at least to the grant. And you really do need to scale. You cannot make soap without a scared, you call measured with cups and moles and spoons. You can do other things of that cakes and maybe, I don't know, lip balm and stuff, but you can't make, sir, this is a chemical reaction. You have to get everything accurate, not just for your safety, but so that the South doesn't block. You need a scale in order to make so you'll also need a soup bowl. I use the good old ice cream tub because it's hot enough so that the 06 of mixture doesn't melt rock truth, as the right kind of plastic and it's flexible enough to actually really easily popular syrup out of it. So I really do recommend it for the first time. Don't go and buy expensive serve Matsushita ice-cream. Tyler made out, made hundreds of Serbs and are still using Astrium tab. You can use silicone baking old. You can also use a cardboard box logic waxed paper and tape on the ages and nothing seeps through. Do not use your metal baking trays like you. And linear braid gluttons. It will completely corrode destroying, assert destroying your pens. And also Jim, OK, you've equality top, top away. And we might think, oh, it's an aspirin server can just use my takeaway. Takeaways at different plastic. It's harder. Plastic is not as flexible. I've had to break our top away just to get sort of out of we have first big allocates. I've learned that the hard way, don't use your takeaway, you'll have to break it just to get the soap out. And also a takeaway has this like gloss coating in it, the caustic, so just completely strips it. That's what it would look like after making soup ones in takeaway. And lastly, a towel or a blanket, you need to be able to insulate your serve mode. So once you've called the soap and the solid molecule, be wrapping it with a towel to keep it warm so that the chemical reaction doesn't just rush passed through and it gets stuck in something called a gel phase. So this is a crucial step you must insulate to ser object made it. The more insulated it is, the better. So you can have Blank on Blank and Metallophone tall. That's fine, but you also must get insulated once you finished.
4. Soap Bar Lesson 3: Method: Welcome to lesson three. In this lesson, I'm going to be teaching you finally, what I'm sure you've been waiting for is the method. How do you actually make, sir? So now lets you finally know what ingredients you need for tools and equipment you need MS. Safety associated with served making, I can finally show you automate. The first thing I'm gonna do is explain the myth and then I'll demonstrate a method. So when I'm extending can just kind of curses what I'm gonna do and then you'll actually see me do it. First two switches stove on to the lowest heat. Then you've got side which are two heat proof balls, one containing your course exerting any element containing your water. Take one of your stainless steel spins with you so that you can mix the caustic soda into your water. This is the step we dark side. Okay. Once you're outside, you're slowly add the caustic soda to the water. You'll see fused available, become working a bowl become hot, does dissolve until over flakes have dissolved, were gone for just mix until all the flakes of dissolved. Be careful when you bring this back inside, will bring us back inside when it's relatively clear, again, took over from murky to being killed just like water. That's how people can mistake it for water, but just bear in mind that this ball is hot. So if you need oven mitts or cloth or something else to hold your ball because it's too hot in, bear that in mind. Then I want you to focus all your attention on bringing this bot back inside safely. So leave the other bone spoon outside you can collected later. That's why I said you should do this away from kids and your kids so she could focus solely on bringing this back inside safely. Once this is on-page accountants day, if we can go back outside and retrieve your course excitable andrew Ly spoon. Now virtualize safely in the house. You need to put your oil onto the stone. The solid were like coconut oil at home now melts. Otherwise it's the liquid oil or a mixture of both. We still want to reach the ideal temperature. Ideals doping temperature is 50 degrees Celsius. Now, you can use a cooking thermometer or candy thermometer, then you'll be absolutely precise, but you have to have a thermometer. I don't use a thermometer. I just use my sense of touch and I'll explain how is that in a minute. Now if you think about where 50 degrees Celsius feels like most household gazes or sit to 50 degrees Celsius. The hot water coming out of your tap, that should roughly be 50 degrees Celsius. Now it's hot water, but you shouldn't be scorching herself a burning yourself from hot wording or tabs. If you are, then it's definitely not 50 degrees Celsius. Okay, so that's just an indication of what 15 degrees Celsius skills bar. Now, by no means encouraging you to go and put your finger in hot oil. The whole point is that it's not supposed to be hot. It's also boast in nearly hot enough to burn you. So that's how I make, sir, I don't use a thermometer, use my sense of touch, so are keep that me my finger in the oil steering duping. Never put W fingers. So DDH touch the bottom presenting actually touching a hot plate. But you should be watching it minute by minute until you get to that point where you can stick your finger in and hold there for at least five seconds before it feels too uncomfortable, you know, to keep this, you pull it out, but you should never touch the oil and then have to leave immediately at means it's way too hot. And one way you will always plot your serve is if the oil is too hot, so please, please, please watch your oil K50. You never, ever want to boil over heat oil because then a whole Volcano will erupt when you combine everything and to make the soap. And that's one surefire way. It's through. Flop closer. So watch very carefully. Ronald, lowest heat. Keep dipping it your finger in or usual to moments or if that's just not for you, but you don't have to just do that early thing is keep watching that. Well, I don't want you to put your finger in oil emit it is boiling hot and then you do burden yourself. So watch it closely. And when it gets that point with just borderland hardware, you might have to start putting your finger then you know, you just really okay, rather too, it's too cold and too hot because if you boil your oil, it will flow. And only when I have my interactive clauses and a half people actually making soap with me, then I come and tell them to actually feel my oil so that I have an idea of what 15 degrees roughly feels like. So obviously, because this is a video, you don't have that privilege. That's why I have my description of what 50 degrees actually feels like it's helpful. But like I said, if you want to be absolute issued into skirt and buy candy thermometer, overcooking thermometer that at least reaches 50 degrees Celsius. So once you have your ideal temperature for your oil, the lies solution should still be warm if not hot, but it should be completely clear because all crystals are dissolve. So you would combine the lime mixture into all your pull it to. The ideal thing for cert making is to get the 2D exact same temperature. So if you do have a thermal into a do not touch the last solution with your finger like you did with the oil leaves. A can't emphasize that enough that you'll have to use at the moment of oh, okay, so if you do have what the Monod said and you want to kind of reach 50 degrees Celsius with birth as this temperature is increasing because it's on a story that is decreasing. So once you added the caustic soda, an exothermic reaction happens, which generates heat, but then it just starts to decrease in heat from that point on, it's the ideal thing is to get the oil out and wasteful alive to come down until they burn 50 degrees. That'll be absolutely perfect. But yeah, I don't do it like that. I'm old school. I just use my sense of touch for the oil. And if this is clear and this has reached an ideal temperature, then I just trust that, that's fun and I've never had so flop using this method. Ok, so you combine when the birth on roughly the same temperature, that's when your world is at 50 degrees Celsius. If you do it in order that I've told you to where you do this step first, they should have been enough time for this live solutions cool down to the point where it is roughly the same temperature as the oil. So you combine the two and they need just blamed. And that is sort of that sample inflamed until you reach a point called trace, which I will show you, and then you mold. And that is circuit is completely symbol. So let me just do a little recap, just giving you a steps without muddle, gardeners go outside at the course exerted to the water. And so all the crystals are dissolved. Being careful not to inhale in your, the fumes will carefully back-end side with your last solution. You want, you can go and collect your course excitable your spoon, the input u oil onto the stove, melting the solid oils if you use coconut oil or warming up the liquid oils until they reach roughly 50 degrees Celsius. If you don't have a thermometer, keep watching oil minute by minute or second by second and sold. You reach a point where it's quite warm, borderline hot, but you can still keep your finger in there for a few seconds once you reach the ideal temperature, when you can combine, you lie to your oil and blend until you reach a point called trace. Once you reach trace, you put it in your mold, sealed alert insulate a new weight urban life. Okay, so that is the method explained. Now, I'm going to demonstrate it and you'll see exactly how easy it is. Now to demonstrate. And grabbing the bow, of course, IC soda and water already measured. And stain is still spin and I'm hitting outside. Okay, so here we have the coast, et cetera. What's outside? Slowly. Caustic soda to try and get every flake out lesions so accurately. It was very much keen on just getting tier in 0. And if you feel it, it's very hot. You might not be able to see the fumes, but they didn't do anything. I just wait for it to kick up so that it looks mostly like water and the fuse will disappear. And then you can go buy concerned. Now that aha law solution is in the house safety, we put out oil overheat. So if you have a guest is to show no, we haven't induction or would have already been on the lowest heats woman ready for you? Now, we wait for the ideal temperature, which is 50 degrees Celsius. Okay, I've been watching the temperature until I get to this point C, I can stick my finger and hold it. They now it's uncomfortable to move out and I'll take it out. And I know that this is the ideal temperature switch or fuel stove. You can even take it off the heat, but don't put her own grand nod because grant naught or completely draw the heat out of the oil. And now you read, combine your lie with your oil. Make sure your blender is plugged in and ready at this point. Okay, give it a little stir. Allow you blend. Put the recipe in this course, which I will share with you after this lesson. You'll be listening for about five to ten minutes and you blend into the read something called trace. You don't even have to be too much. K. Lift up your blend every now and then to look for trace. Trace means you'll see traces of droplets on the surface, like instant pudding, but you'll see it. See no droplets will stay on the surface. Nothing almost. I can see a little bit of a phrase can see the little circle of the blender is showing itself days when and where to go for. Okay, so I've reached trace down. You see I can do this and it leaves a trace of that circle from the blender. This is called trace. So when you do this little peak or drop stay, they almost surface about melting away. Case. Do you understand trace? This is quite a thin trays or I would say actually Medium phrase. You'll see why that is relevant when I deal with some frequently asked questions. Okay. They see that drop state. And it's still staying a little stamp of itself that is traced k. So it is at this point that you put your soap in the mold. Okay, now, you pull your soil into a mould, mixes the acoustic, They still don't attach it. And if you do, you'll feel that H that I'll talk about. Okay, so it's at this point that you add your editors, you can add hubs, spices, activated charcoal, clay is nothing fresh because it will just burn. I'm choosing to use some tumor Incas tumor because a natural color and make it stuck a bright red orange. Hoffman. That's how you'll get that luck model to fit that you would see in some stoves. And so you could stop there if you want to Joe search, look like that. Because you reach trace those peaks will stay there. So you could play around with those peaks and make little patterns. The longer you wait, the thicker this trace will get so wrapped up very thin, you can barely see those patents that I'm doing. But if you wait a little bit longer for you stir a little bit more, it will just get thicker with TMS, you can actually make nice mountain peaks. This you could stop there and I have just some little gentle waves on a top of master, or you can mix in thoroughly if you want a solid color. So instead of essential oils, you can also use. Essential oils are obviously natural. So if that's your concern in, you'd have to use essential oils, fragrance, but if that doesn't concern you thin, you get fragrant oils from soap speciality stores that you could add in at this point now, fragrant oils or a bit more stable with temperature and they smell for more. Meaning you can smell the formula, we're strong saint that doesn't actually fade, whereas essential oils eventually evaporated fade over time. People often struggle to hold the saint of a fragrance, amino essential oil. Fragrances and important to me, are like actually completely planed Serbs frictions free. But I know a lot of people doing this for the creative aspect. Okay, so there's my circuit. You could also come in with your blender and blend wall because like I say, this is a thin trace. So if you want to make those peaks just blend some more. You can over blend. So just a little bit at a time until you get that thick stuff peaker t1. Don't go beyond that because you'll syrup will occur. Just see how thick of a trace. See how that trace is very obvious. This is quite a thick traits. We can actually have some fun with patents K. So let's try those peaks again. You see that a little bit more pronounced now and even make blobs. I'm just showing you what column they knew things you can do a lot because Patton said little weights. You just keep lifting up your spoon. You can see it from that angle. All changed now if you point, okay. There's my trimeric natural chimeric soap with a few little waves in an ice cream tub. When you're finished being creative, put the lid on and rapids in your toe to insulate. And that is surprise. Now wasn't that easy. So that's 80 took that escaped you, win. I hope you're feeling much more relieved now to seeing the XD demonstrate how to make sir, and seeing how simple it is. It was really nothing scary or dangerous. Attenuate any mosques and gloves on saying you mustn't fee is you should say to give it is your first time. But I hope you see how simple it is and it's not something you should be scared of. And I really hope that you actually feeling excited nouns ago of a major and serve. All you have to do is essentially is blamed the last solution with OIL blend and suddenly reach trace, add, trace agile additives, close the lid and insulate. Now once you have your CRB insulated in your towel, you'll put this in surface. You can even Rajya or you can put it in a cupboard or anyway, did it say insulated overnight? And this time tomorrow, you will unmoored. If you were using a 100% liquid oil at this point, you wouldn't be able to unfold 24 hours from now. You'd have to possibly way with as long as a week, but you can keep checking every day just to see how toughest Got to see. If you unfold it wouldn't be Patty and just be breaking apart. If that's the case, you just keep waiting long enough until it hardens and draws out so you can put it up mode. But if you use a recipe that I'm going to give you for this course, you'll unroll over 24 hours. One other thing I'd like you to take note of is that you should have, Alice's really, you don't want to be fumbling around when you're trying to reach trace because as soon as you each trace you do mold, which just gives the care from that point on and you'll get more difficult to work with. And you really want to insulate your serve as soon as possible. So you only funding around o to, on Darwin's Dilemma, essential oil should I use chimeric? Should, that should be pre decided on already. When you sitting at your station, you should know that I want chimeric and oranges integrals you chimeric orange essential oil should be the regular essential bottle should be open so you don't have to waste time trying to open it. Now at this point of my interactive workshops that are hold live with people, you would be making self after hearing me explain and often seeing my demonstration, you would have all the ingredients, agile station and equipment that you need to go and make us soak yourself to put into practice everything that you've just learned at C. So if you do have the equipment at home, you have ingredients that you need. I really do encourage you to go and make syrup yourself now. And then in the next lesson I'll be speaking about cutting and curing your CRM is I'll see you in the next lesson. I hope you get the chance to make your own soap reforming.
5. Soap Bar Revision: Cardboard Box Demonstration: You have your station radius. I have already measured coil. I've just double the course recipe. So instead of 300 grams, coconut oil is 600 grams. Coconut oil, foreign trigrams, sunflower, 154 grams caustic soda, and 374 grams of water. Mod2 stainless steel students mortal, ready? Under my mole, I blender, switched on and ready. And also get ready. You're cloth served in what the nigger are going to be making syrup and a cardboard box to show you how it's done. I'll be using a normal retail shopping bag as lambda soap mole, the cardboard box. You can use most retail bags, but just if you read her bag, is Marx looked for the code, the plastic curve. As you can see, this one is PhD, which has high density polyethylene occurred two, that means it is resistant to alkali and it will work. But you still can have your soap mixture hot because it was still melt under heat. That's got nothing to do with chemicals. This will be resistant to the course exert on the line or the caustic soap mixture, but it won't be resistant to heat so it will still melt. So prepare your serve mold and make it as flat as possible. Because the unfortunate thing with using a packet is those creases will sharpen your soap. So if you don't mind, it's fine. But if you want to just minimize a try and make it as flat as possible. Okay, now, our mold is reading some things you can't see on camera that I have prepared already is my essential oil which I'm going to be using for fragrance, which is peppermint. It's already open and ready for me as well as a puppet for me to get the peppermint essential out easily. This is a very big bottle. Normally, you'd be buying those little Basel so you can either pull the whole bottle in and don't need pit. I also have measuring spoons to measure the clay. I'm going to be making soap with kaolin clay, green kaolin clay and peppermint fragrance oil. So I have a table screen here just to measure the colon claim. I have a beaker with one tablespoon of oil in it, which I'm going to dissolve the kaolin clay into, make it easier to work with and to prevent clumps. And I have my 3D open kaolin clay here. So at this point it is better to prepay additives before you stop making, sir, for the course recipe, I recommended two tablespoons of clay. This is double the course recipes, so you could have as much as four tablespoons of clay. Clay does tend to speed up a reaction. So you have to work faster NOR today, but it's not nearly as fast as with working with when you're working with sugars. Catholic, I'm going to need a bit more foil in hand. Just put more oil in it so I can dissolve as Clay in tourists news paste so that it doesn't form clumps when I add it to the soap before you can add as dry clay that you will find that small clumpy and it's hard to get the clades all dissolve evenly. I'm gonna put it aside. Okay, now I'm going to add the caustic soda in a well ventilated area already. Course external market stuck to the bottom. So just gently push it. Don't legends splashdown, push too hard. Just to break off from the bottom. Just wait for it to get clear like water. And then, you know, it's really while waiting for those to cool down the reactants to complete, we can start warming up our oil melting Well because the coconut oil is relatively solid, so we'll start melting it down. The lowest heat Number one, That's still very lukewarm. K That's definitely hot seas, but now it's uncomfortable. Make sure your stove is off at this point. And agile line, I've added the lie and I've taken muscle of the heat because I'm using induction stove. It just keeps adding heat, so it's important to take it off and I'll stop lending. This little peak forms and can see the lines being lift and the search bar. You can see it on video icon with the camera. Now. Now I'm going to add much say, and I'll blend for few seconds just to incorporate the clave competing Tron work very fast, as fast as you can from this point. Hey, I've got as much clay out as possible. Agile fragrance, well, adding peppermint. I'm going to add quite a lot because pavement oil is quite stable. So I'm going to add up to 15 moles fragrance even 20 in this double batch. Remember it's not the same size batch as the coarser is F0 is double k. This is the pit haven't filled each time. That added about 20. Now just blend. You don't want to blend too much. Stare, can and must stop lending. I don't want to over blend k can manually sternal, can see it's much the could trace already. Okay. Now you can attitude mold is going to move this here. I can put mumbles off. Most of it aren't going to do a platoons because I want to incinerate as quick as possible. So the color stays as vibrant as possible as well. Just make sure it's even be sprayed on a makeshift sled, just another piece of cardboard from packaging. And I'm just going to put it on top and an insulated motto. Now grain to grain side, and just put it on top of a blanket. And that's my job this time tomorrow, 24 hours from now. I'll unmoored and cut.
6. Soap Bar Lesson 4: Cutting and Curing Soap: Welcome to lesson four. In this lesson, I'm going to teach you how to Pat and curiosity is now 24 hours since I made the cert. If you make the So given to you in this course, you're wait 24 hours to unfold it and cut it. I do insist that you cut 24 hours afterwards. Otherwise, you'll serve by just gets harder with time. So maximum 48 hours you can wait. But if you can, please try and remember 24 hours so that it's kind of like the texture of cheddar cheese belong you weigh the harder it's gonna get to cut yourself. You have to wait a two week just to catch your so you might still be able to cut it, but it might crumble. So 24 hours really is the ideal time. Again, if you've made a syrup recipe with a 100% liquid oil like cast steel. So you're going to have to wait as long as a week, just to remember from a mole is just going to stick to the sides and you're not gonna be able to get it out. And it's Minnis softest Patty, almost like touristic. So you'll have to wait a whole week. But if you do follow the recipe in this course in 24 hours later, and mold and start cut. Let's see what's inside. Here is the soap I made 24 hours ago. You'll just need quite a large knife to cut the shapes that you want. So you can either use something like, something like this. If you use a serrated knife, obviously you'll see those serrations, those lines come in Chaucer. So if you don't want those lines and use a non-saturated north. And you just cut it this way. Cut the shape and size that you want. Here you go. If you don't like this rounded corner from the ice cream to make it absolutely. Straight. Might have a perfect square. Using another served more than that might not be a problem. And then you can use these off cuts. You can grade them and who hot boiling water on them until they melt. And you can make kind of like a makeshift liquid. So it's not a true liquid syrup, but it will definitely work like you wouldn't be able to sell atop of liquid soap, but differently works for home use just because it will separate into layers. And so it will just need a little bit of a shake. And if this was a completely plain, so and it was formulated for cleaning, so it had a 0% super fat. Then you could write that and use that end laundry powder. If you look carefully, you can see this white residue on the soap. That's called soda ash and you can prevent it. It's just a byproduct of the CRT making process. So once you put into your mold, then you just spray the top with alcohol of high alcohol, rubbing alcohol, you spray the top. And then once that cures and when you unmask, that shouldn't be there really prevents the formation of soda ash. Soda ash isn't harmful at all, completely harmless. This is just for aesthetic reasons. So if you don't like the white residue on sir, then you can just spray it with an alcohol. It really doesn't bother me. So its father and mother. But if it bothers you, then you would just spray it with alcohol. Here is the SERP made with coffee, coffee grounds, and you can see the soda ash, this has been curing for at least three months. So the soda ash, the white gets really pronounced. If I sprayed this with alcohol, I wouldn't see the sseuda. Now the two surface cut, what do you well, now it's time to cure yourself. And how do you kill your Sir? You simply take your surfboards and place them in a dark, well ventilated area like this. Gaps between the bars. You want to store it out of direct sunlight, etc, which are so far in a sunny window. So you also don't want to enclose your soul because they must breed in water is evaporating, the reaction is still occurring. Don't put it I takeaway, don't put in a box and put an enclosed covered put it in a basket in the bathroom on top of your fridge on a table somewhere as long as it has gaps between each surpasses the ache and free flow and that it's out of direct sunlight. That's we need also to hear. The method that you've learned in this course is called cold processor. So we didn't sit hours behind the stove cooking. Our serpents lab was ready. We just leave it until trace. That's called core process sort of making, making a corporately so your surface is not safe to use immediately. Unfortunately, you have to wait a minimum of one week until the chemical reaction is finished and it's safe to use your service. So for safety reasons, you have to wait a minimum of one week. The chemical reaction is actually mostly complete office three days, but just wait for a week just to be extra saved. You don't want a lie heavy so when you don't want to be incomplete and an irritated skin, So wait a minimum of one week. I know you'll be very anxious of you've made your first bar of soap. Rate that one week and an Audi safe to use. The longest that I recommend you leave served to cure is six months. If you've made soap with a 100% liquid oil, then you can wait as long as ten to 12 months. So that's like a cast steel so far. But for the recipe you've learned in this course and most other sidebar recipes, I wouldn't wait longer than six months. And the reason being is soap is like why it gets much better with time. So the longer you live, the lever improves, the hardiness improves. But at the six month mark, sometimes attainment mark, you start to see the quality D2 IOC discoloration. You might even see some spots and the bubbles will actually decrease eventually. The reason you'll see spots in your survey if you've lived it for very long, is because the oil inside the circuit hasn't turned to serve. So your soup affects those oils are now reaching the sell by date. So those foils are starting to turn rents in the surface, not necessarily dangerous to use. It's still fine to use you just using a topic, use and wash your skin and it is still serve after all, but you might not want to solid. And if it was me, I never have soap lying around for that long and I just go through it way too quickly. But if it was me, I would just great that soap and use it in something like my laundry parlor. The shelf life of natural, so is the shelf life of the oil use. So if you use multiple oils and your soap recipe, there'll be the shelf life of B, the shelf life of the oil with the shortest shelf-life, That makes it. Let me give an example to illustrate. So let's say I made a search bar with a 100% coconut oil. Coconut oil has a shelf life of two years. So that means if my soap bar would have a shelf life of two years, if I like the recipe in this course, you sunflower oil and coconut oil. Sunflower oil only as a sharp love of 18 months. That means the maximum shelf life of the soap bar is 18 months. Natural serves of homemade soaps don't require a preservative. They are preservatives that you can add, make them lost, yours. But often people aren't storing So for that long. So natural surface really require preservative, amusing and Critias divinity within the one year to your mom. Sir, the reason being is that the pH of CRM is about a pH tin, that pH is too high for any bacteria or fungus to grow. So soap in itself is kind of like a natural preservative of itself preserving because the pH is so high. Unlike Ukraine's inversions, which you actually want the pH to be between 4.55.5 because that's the PHR skin, you would need a preservative and creams and lotions because first of all, add water into the recipe. And bacteria can grow in a pH environment of 4.5 to five with five bacteria and fungus cannot grow in a pH environmental team. That's why you don't need to preserve your permits or something else you should do while your surface Curie is it should turn it whenever you remember. So you don't have to be strict about it and say every day or every second day. Just try and turn him on a regular basis and just keep turning into that. Each side gets to the a. Because if you just had to leave it on one side all the time, this height navigates exposure to a and you'll see some oil exists well dripping out of much form, a little bit of oil, residual oil who underneath. But if you keep tuning it to every side, its exposure to the east of the water can evaporate the bark and hardened on all sides. So just keep trying to remembered to the solid ball every so often. And your so-called Kirkuk lucky.
7. Soap Bar Lesson 5: Recipe Formulation: Welcome to lesson five. In this lesson, I'm going to teach you how to make your own celebrates. It means that you don't have to allow my recipe. Now, you might feel a little bit intimidating beginning, but please bear with me, I promise you it's really easy. We're going to learn how to use a Serb calculator. There isn't more laborers manual way to calculate the syrup recipe, but if you can just use a Serb, calculate them. Why do you want to bother with math? And also, if you want to do that whole long manual route, there's the risk that you've miscalculated somewhere in the whole recipes of flops are really dependent, rely on calculators because I trust the math mover matter. Okay, so if you go to soap calc dominate as a network. If you go to that website at the top tab, you'll see a menu option called Recipe calculator. Gotta recipe calculator. Now when you see the recipe calculate keys, don't think Irma words is so complicated. This looks like rocket science. It's really, really easy. We just going to follow the steps. I'll pull up a screenshot where you'd seek your habit in particular at the moment. So step one says, what type of lie? The type of lie that will always use for Serb bars is sodium hydroxide. And that acronym for that is what a scientific symbols for that is in a HCOO select in a rage. Now you just go to the second option where it says number two, and it says weights of oils as the total weight of oils future decided to use a whole host of oils can just put the total weight. So if the total weight is at 1000 grams, per 1000 grams, we insult African East gram. So if you're not in from South Africa and use pounds or ounces, and you would select that option. Here in South Africa, we use grams. We would always like brands. The recipe we made in this course was a 500 gram, will wait, so you're tapping 500 grams. The third option, since water, you always select lost option, which is water to live ratio. So we dealing an eraser, let me explain a little bit about the Voltage Law ratio. In a chemical reaction that is soap making, you need a one-to-one ratio, you need one gram. Of course, excerpts react with a minimum of one gram of water. If there's less water. Soapy lie Hebei, okay, so that's the absolute minimum, but that's really cutting it. So she never really wanna make soap with a one-to-one ratio. Lowest ever go is 1.5 to one. So 1.5 parts of water to one. So making sure that there's more than enough water to react with that force exerted. And the only time I ever do 1.5 to one is when I'm making a soap, a 100% liquid oil. So if I was gonna make Kat Steele serve with just out of weld, which is They now would use a 1.5 to one ratio. For this recipe, we have coconut water using a solar or you went way more water, so it was just solid coconut oil. A 100% coconut will serve our girls highest p21, three parts water to one part caustic soda. Because solid oils make such hard bars of soap, you need the extra water. The soap we've made in this course is a 2.4 to one. That means 2.4 pots of water to everyone, part of caustic soda. So we know this over double the amount of water we need, the minimum amount of watts we need. So we definitely find us and weren't belive avi, if we've measured accurately. Let's go to the next option which says super fat and fragrance. Let's talk about sleep effects. Think of fact as oil because oil is effect, okay? As super, as extra, super fat is basically how much extra oil D18 in your recipe to stay as oil and not be converted into Serb. So that way the moisturizing properties come in remained buy soap is basically converting oil into syrup. How much oil in your recipe do you want to actually stay as well so that it can moisturize skin. In the recipe we did in this course was formulated for skim k. So I put a 5% super fat. I wouldn't recommend going then a 6% super-fast and solid bars because then it is too oily and it actually drips oil and becomes very hard to package. If you wanted to make a shampoo bar, for instance, you'd only use a one-percent super fat or even no percent super fat, but I'll recommend 1% because you want a little bit of oil in a shampoo bars that the shampoo bottle not so cleansing that it dries out, no hay and strips that completely, that it just becomes a freezing. They have 1% of the oil, they just stick condition and moisturize or hey, just enough, but not enough to make it actually grease the American Clean. If you're making a cleansing boss or a bothered you wanted to use for laundry and for dishes. You don't want any super-fast. Y1 is 0% super-fast because he wants moisturize dishes and moisturize towels. Okay. So you know, you want every single gram of oil in your recipe to convert to serve and you want any oil left urban that recipe to moisturize anything. So if you're making a cleansing bar, 0% super fat, I hope you understand super-fast to her though it's easy to follow. The next thing is fragrance. If you making small batches of soap at home, I wouldn't worry about this. I normally just put 0 in fragrance because I do normally make these small batches at home and not making soap on a large scale or in a factory. If you are intending to make it on a large scale and you would have DICOM for fragrance. So for example, the small home bachelor's, you would be putting 0.5. grams of essential oil, which is completely negligible, weren't really affect the SERP reaction at all. But if you making it on a large scale, you'll have to be using ten kilograms of fragrance and that's a whole different story. So then you would have to actually put their Tim kilograms of fragrance. And our monastery meaning that larger the scale but anything really larger than Alito to maybe output the fragrance in. Ok, so I'm only put 0 in fragrance if you are using the recipe that I'm giving you in this course, you can also just put 0 in the fragrance section. Okay, now let's go to number five. You'll see that it says so quality. Skip that whole section, that whole column. It's really not necessary for you to know. Just next to that you'll see a dropdown list where you can actually select the oils that you want. So if you wanted to, if you look up in your pantry and you see the sharp coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and rapeseed oil, then you can come here and select those oils. It's a really, really long list for this recipe. I'm just using the recipe we used in this course as an example, select the drop-down list. Scroll down, select coconut oil. Right next to it you'll see a little button that says Add. Click the Add button and you should see coconut oil jumped to the table next to it. Then go to the drop-down list again, select sunflower oil and click the Add button and you'll see sunflower oil a PAN table next to it. You would just keep going selecting them oils and adding them until they appear in the table. And so you have all your world's day. If you make a mistake, you just select where it is and you click the Remove button. Once we have all your oils now you look at that table. These two columns and Fc is percentage and grams. Now I need to decide how you want to do this. If you know what you have in your pantry, you know the chef, 250 grams of other world and a 110 grams sweet element and 50 grams of coconut oil. You can put that precisely day if you don't know those grants and you just trying to experiment, you do it in percentage. So you click the percentage column and you would just say, I wonder what a 30-30, 30 it's like. And you're just prefixing in each. For this course we did a 60-40, 60% coconut oil, 40% sunflower oil. So I recommend percentage for experimenting. I recommend grand column if you know exactly what you have and it's limited. So it's not like you can just go and buy more if you know what you have used the grams column. If you don't know what you have and you just one experiment, use the percentage column, right? So that's inputting into the calculator. Now just scroll down and you'll see a button that says calculate recipe. Hit that button. You won't see anything happen. You have to press the button underneath it that says view or fundraising. The select that button and a new tab will open, which will show you your recipe output. Now again, mr. don't be intimidated by this. The table. Just look at the values that you need, okay, signal everything else. You will see a row that's blue, that says Water and just read to the right, and you'll see how many grams of water you need. Then you'll see a row for the oils and how many, what the way to the oils such a neat and you'll see a role for the lie, which is the sodium hydroxide for so plot and how many Grammy for that. So it gives you precisely what you need to measure in order to make a soap with those coils. And to meet that, you'll see a breakdown of the different oil. So you'll have a turtle way to boil that you'll have a breakdown. So if you've selected percentage for example, and you can know the grams and it gives you the actual amounts. So it will say coconut oil, you need 600 grams, sunflower oil, you need 300 grams. Now another handed to love IT use is that table in the bottom left. It shows you what quality you can expect from you. So before you've even lifted thing than anything, they'll show you the hardness of your CRM and moisturizing properties, that loveliness, the conditioning quantities. So it gives you a range of numbers and it shows you way. You also falls in that range. You won't get a Serb. Well, it's really hard to get assert that fits exactly perfectly within those ranges. That is, it gives you an indication of what you're going for if you know you want to make a very bubbly and hot so and you've put in these oils and they fall completely out of range in hardness and Bolinas, then you know, okay, I actually need to bring in a solid warm up. The solid will increase the amount of coconut oil would ever other solid oil you're using so that it can become hot and become a bubbly. Remember, liquid oils are very soft and not w rapport. They serve really gives you a good indication you can lie on the couch, fiddle with numbers for those oils until you get something that you may be happy with. That's exactly how I came up with the recipe Buddhist schools. And that's all there is to formulate in your array city just uses. So calculator input the values and look like rocket science, new beginning, I'm sure you were like, oh, well wait, I'm not technically savvy at all, but it's just about following the steps 12345, getting calculate, hitting view, and then just looking at the words, you need to see how the grams of things that you need for each. So I hope you have, you have you understand now you can go open your pantry and see what oils you have and start fiddling around and make your own recipe. And if you do come up with an excellent recipe, are hokey shared with me?
8. Soap Bar Lesson 6: Troubleshooting: In this lesson, I'm going to troubleshoot some common problems. First, I'll go over what you can expect to happen if you measure your ingredients incorrectly. And remember I told you to always use a scale. So if you don't use a scale or if you've made a mistake somehow, this is what you can expect to happen. If you've measured too little water, then you actually will speed up the reaction, everything or seem like it's going fine. And all of a sudden your soap mixture will just Volcano up out of the pot and separating looks like a curdle. Almost. You can fix that, but you can only fix that if you've had at least each absolutely certain that you at least had a 1-to-1 water to lie ratio. Because if you don't have that one-to-one with linear slope is actually not saved to you. That'll be live heavy and I'll be two caustic and I'll actually burn, irritate your skin so you'd have to throw it at circle way. But if you were just under your water when we must've always be saved. So if the recipe is two to one and you just wind 1.5 to widen this volcano happens. You know that you had enough water. You can't say that you just scoop off whatever you can sell which put it back in the part and keep lending was keep lending will eventually turn very stiff and hard and almost transparent. Once you reach that depart transparent stage, you can put it in your mold. It's not gonna be nice and poorest like you saw in the method. It'll be thick like paste, which will just have to press it down, close that up insulated and you'll still have soap that is at least usable at my home. Look great, but it will be usable. Another reason you'll experience at volcano reaction where everything is fine and it just volcanoes out because your oils way too hot, not even close to 50 degrees Celsius. You had boiling well, and that's why it was too much human reaction and it just releases and that volcano again, you can save it in the same way or just scooping it up, keep lending, keep lending, and pour it into your Mall when it's thick and translucent. If you've measured too much caustic soda than your surface, completely unsafe to use and, uh, difficult to know when you've actually done so. But I imagine that if you use trash caustic soda, when you actually use the soap on your skin, you'll feel that same feeling that I told you about if he spoke lie or touched Core six or so, you or anyone who is user soap experiences itching or the skin to integrate and you know, that was lying hidden nodes, weights much caustic soda in it. If you measured way too much oil, you'll see, sir, when you've unfolded, there'll be like excess oil dripping out of the soap and even not if you had to just wait a little advanced laden cure for weeks. Even after weeks, you'll just see oil dripping from the opinion though you had way too high of a super fat. Or you mentioned too much oil in your recipe to begin with. Remember, don't, or I recommend not going over a 6% super fat because I've found with a lot of serve that are even went to 7% super fat. Have that world tripping out a master. And that makes it very difficult to package. You can't wrap it up with just completely destroys the packaging and oil watches every way. Okay. So if that happens to you, you know, imaged way too much oil or you accounted for way to hive super fat. If you add your additives before trace by accidents, really just always try to remember to add additives once you've reached trace. But if you had to add your editors before trade, so essential oils or anything else for that matter, you may mess up with the chemical reaction because traces that point where most of the words are really tuned to soap. The chemical reactions not complete, but it's stable, stable enough for you to add things to it to do so before you would actually be putting those things into the chemical reaction so it have unpredictable results. I don't know what would happen if you added lemon essential before trace versus tsunami and essential oil because they both chemically different. So just add additives to be saved and have predictable results after you've reached trace. Another thing, because all essential oils are chemically different, there are unpredictable. So I've heard of some people experiencing different things going home with the soap because they added too much of a particular essential oil. I've seen people, MR. workshops experience some negative results like hurdling and discoloration of the server by using too much Bonilla essential oil. Now, vanilla essential girls, not real essential oil, absolute Blinn, but almost like a food coloring of food flavorings. But if you add a little bit like outset too far, Mozart's file, if you add more than five moles to this recipe that we've done in this course, then some people search for everybody. So that's why I say it's quite unpredictable. Kernels and flocks of birds, you can save it, but it doesn't look the same. Another thing is food coloring. Food coloring, again, is chemically made up of different things. I've had personal experience, a bad experience with the green food coloring. Irma word was him renders, add a green food coloring to soap and, uh, turned black and it had the most rancid smell ever. So I would just say stay away from food coloring. I've used pink and red food coloring and that seemed to be fine. Everything worked. But again, like that might have just been my luck. Or maybe food coloring, red food coloring is the one that works. You do get liquid and part of food colorings for soap that often not natural. That's why I normally use natural food coloring. Like you saw me use the chimeric to color the syrup and then have an orange color. You can also use cocoa powders colored brown activated charcoals give black spirulina for green. I think marimba also green caning paper, claims you have green kaolin clay, yellow kaolin clay, pink kaolin clay, and then also your zinc oxide. So you have rid zinc oxide, browsing oxides, lab annular zinc oxide, all of those things you can use to call your surgeon naturally.
9. Soap Bar Lesson 7: Frequently Asked Questions: Welcome to the final lesson of the soap bar codes. I hope you really enjoyed it so far. In this lesson, I'm going to to answer some of your frequently asked question. Another question, I frequently our scan us substitutes. One oil in a surplus oil. So if a recipe calls for 500 grams of coconut oil, can I use 500 grams of olive oil or another solid oil for that matter? And the answer is, unfortunately not. You cannot substitute or change anything in the surface if you must use it as is. And the reason you concepts that you'd want oil for another is because each word has something called a set value. And step means a sonification value. That means how much storage is required to turn that specific oil into syrup. So one well might have a high step value requiring a lot, of course soda. And another one is substitute with has a lowest set, then you find lists caustic soda. So if you substitute, you might have the lacking Core 600. And so you're sort doesn't even turn to serve and it's just a complete fluff or it does tend to SOPA thing of surplus line heavy, irritating your skin so you have to use, that's how sort of calculators work then using set values for each boil when you're adding to the list and then calculating it automatically for you how much caustic soda is required to turn those wells that you selected into so you cannot change anything about a surplus and pecan substitute MLK, boil the water. You can't change the caustic soda. You cannot change the water to lie ratio. And you can change the oils you have to follow so recipe as it is. If you want to change something or substituted oil, they don't have to go back to sort of calculated an input your new value. So if you wanted to change that coconut worlds olive oil, you have to go to Calculate and now add the olive oil and you'll see that the Course six amount is different. If you want to change this super fat to the woods, Laurasia get to do the same but back to the drawing board or back to the CRF calculator, read, input the values and you'll get a new recipe. And other related question is, can you duplicate a surplus of these? So if those are recipes are only going to yield the 500 grounds of soap and you want a KG of Sir, can you just double it up exactly? If you keep everything exactly, yes, you can double up or recipe because all the caustic soda ratios for the oil, the water, everything remains the same. You cannot change anything, you cannot change the super fat, you can change the amount of water use. You have to follow it exactly if you do that and you can't double, triple, quadruple a surpressed NPV. I've already covered this in the tools and equipment video, but I've just covered on small because I'm frequently asked, Can you use the same equipment that you use to make so to cook with? And the answer is yes, you just need a clean your equipment properly. So you have to do three things. You have to rinse your Koopman thoroughly with water. Then you have to run to wipe it down with many good, neutralize any live, then you need to wash it with your dishwashing. Serve women dishwasher as you normally would. Once you've done all three of those things, if your equipment is safe enough to use for cooking and 0 and have to have two separate pieces of equipment. But please note that blamed some ladies have a plate behind the blade and things can often get stuck behind the saved Acts, the blend of a new hat, then you can't use it for search because you'll get food in your circle, you'll get soap in your food. If you have a blender that is completely open at the back without those irritating plates, then it's fine if you mutual blender as well. How do you make layers? So, so might've seen circuits blue and pink and white on top. How do you make soap like that? Remember in the Mayfield, listen, we reached a thin traced to start with. We could just barely see the droplets and the little rain from the blender then encrypt blended some more. It would be come a thicker trace and eventually you could foreigners stiff peaks. So that's exactly how you'd make a layered serve. You would reach her first, then trace intake that certain mixture divided into as you once, let's say was to divide into two separate heat proof jogs or balls or whatever color each find the one you want to color, then you choose one and you'd London so you reach a thick trace, the one that you ones at the bottom, reach a thick trace. Make sure to pick trays that you can form peaks with. That means it's dense enough to hold something on top of it. So you'd pour that thick trace mixture at first the bottom of your mode, then you take a thumb trace mixture, you haven't mixed it more after putting the color in, then you put that and Jane, He poured on top. But as the lead and insulate, high make soap with honey, we've all seen those honeys serves. First of all, it's not a lot of honey in there because there'll be a lot of sugar. And sugar accelerates the reaction and generates a lot of heat. So you, working at a much lower temperature, I would not recommend adding honey or trying to make honey. So when it's your first time, even when you're still a beginner. Rather make the soap a lot gets used as a cyst. The whole process is natural to you, then you can attempt making a honey soap. It's definitely for advanced, sober. Sugar adds heat and it speeds up the reactions you need to be working fast. That's why serve making was just the natural to you mustn't be fumbling around the crystal, just club the soap. It needs just be second nature to you cuz you have to work fast with anything sugar. Okay, so wouldn't add more than a tablespoon of honey to the recipe we made in this course. Then you need to watch very carefully me not going to 50 degrees Celsius and that's why even hot, hot process. So if you actually cooking at hotter, so 50 degrees Celsius is really not hots and comparisons, hot process, but when you add sugar, nearly completely lower. So we working at 50 degree Celsius of 40 degrees Celsius events, you have to really watch oil maybe taken off at 30 degrees Celsius and then Agile lie, even your lie, you don't want to be too hot. You wanna make sure that that's at least 50 degrees Celsius, but higher than 50 degrees Celsius. You're blend. Agile honey off to trace. But like I said, it generates heats and it moves quickly. And then you'll put it in the fridge to stator Monod. If you don't put it in the fridge, you might find that your circuit is very, very dark or actually looks burned. The same concept goes for making so with MOOC. So you might see goat's milk syrup or just MLK, sir, milk and honey. Sir. Mooc has lactose, which is a type of sugar. So again, bull accelerates trace and it will accelerate, generate heat in the soil. So you want to also be working at very low temperatures, 30 to 40 degree Celsius. But also another catch is when you put the milk in it, look at trace, the MOOC comes in instead of your water. Okay, so instead of using a 188 grams of water, like our recipe, knew and had use a 188 grams of MOOC, but you don't use it at room temperature or even cold milk. You freeze the MOOC so you actually put them out in ice block tray as though it's frozen and make sure that it weighs a 188 grants and you sprinkle your lie over the ice block MOOC and generate so much heat because of the sugar in the milk. And because large is an exothermic reaction, any water that it will melt them OK, if you don't do that, if you add it to room temperature mode or even just fridge cold mode, you will actually burn a MOOC and it will turn brown and not smell laws and observe may flow as well. So when you are making a MOOC, so if you actually freeze the MOOC and use that in place of your words. You can also use other food stuff when you're making soap. And I don't mean now before trace like I was talking about with the MLC, I mean, two color yourselves off, you've reached trace, so you might want to use p true juice, but if you're gonna use fresh food stuff, then you need to deduct that from your water allocation. So if you the recipe for 200 grams of distilled water and you want to add ten grams B-tree tooth nearly subtract that and only use a 190 grams of water so that you can add its him grams of beach route. A lot of us fresh foods have a lot of water, high water content anyway. So that's why we subtract it from water. You might use a lot of fresh food stuff like I in this recipe that was 750 grams surface epi, I wouldn't use more than a tablespoon of fresh food stuff. And if you do it that way, then you don't need to preserve the Serb. Cuz you don't want an excess of anything first that I would go off. So here's a tablespoon. The pH in the server will be enough to preserve your startup if there's fresh petri reduced in name. Related to that, some people asked me if you put like things like activated charcoal and chimeric Neil served for me, we know that humor exchanges scan and activated charcoal also leaves a black. If you put those kinds of things and patriots things of skin. If you put those kinds of things in SERP, warranted sleeve marks on our skin and make mosque in yellow or pink with the head. And the answer is no because those things are suspended in the soap. So actually just washes away with the server if you had to make a black served with activated chalk or like this one, when you wash it, the what's washing away will be black. But I definitely wanted to leave anything blank on your skin. And the same with the tumor. Because a sustained in the circuit will just partial. Another frequently asked question is, how do you make glycerine soap or transparent? So when people say glossary insert what they actually mean is transparent serve because all surfaces to reinsert evenness or pay. Cuenca also has glycerin in it when you've added combined oil, water, and caustic soda, the final product is served salting Listerine, okay, So also has glycerin in it. But when people ask me how to make destroying serve, what they actually mean is how do you make a transparent, completely clear bar of soap? The answer is not so simply, OK, this first of all, your contour by the cold process method that we've learned in this class. It's a hot process made that cert, and also you've added of hole in it. So some people are weary of putting alcohol on the skin every day topically because it actually breaks down the barrier of your skin cancer file cultural skin every day. But that's how you make a transparent circuit at a very high proof alcohol. And the alcohol dissolves the soap crystals and allows light to pass through, then you'll have a transparent Barb. So in the hot process method, you don't stop at traits to keep cooking or so. And once you've reached the point where the footprint ready, then you add your high proof alcohol and you keep cooking and keep mixing until you have a completely clear syrup. And it's generally a 0% super-fast search because if, if any oil in there just contributes to it being more opaque. So you need 0% super-fast, sir. And that's how you make Listerine serve and pursuing SERP is not necessarily more natural basis. Misconception that Listerine syrup is more gentle or more natural than other Serbs. Definitely not the system or its basic form, form of SSR. Once you add alcohol, you're making a bit more complicated now you have a less natural barks or because you've got added alcohol in it so that the light can pass through certain crystals. Some people also ask me, can you change the pH of a so-called you bring the pH down? Because if you remember, I said that the pH of surplus about pH tin, which is quite basic, if you consider that our skin is a pH, five to 5.5. So some people want to try and reduce the pH because I think it will irritate his skin, First of all, surface a wash of products that's not going to irritate your skin at a pH TIN, if your surface lie heavy, then it would not be PhD. Not much higher hosts exerted is pH 14. So if there's an excess, of course, exerted, would irritate your skin. But you cannot reduce the pH of soap naturally, okay? Some companies that are making unnatural serve will do so with other chemicals. But you cannot reduce the pH of certain, Actually, we were required to add some sort of acid. So lemon juice, vinegar or things like that, citric acid. So that you can bring down the pH from PhD lower. You can maybe bring down if you added a bit of citric acid, the pH to maybe I'm nine, if you're lucky, but she can't go lower than that because you will actually reverse the soap making process. You will reverse. Reaction and your circle to Bach's oil. Soap by nature, by chemistry, is a basic substance. Ok, so it is alkaline by nature, the military to try and add an acid to bring down the pH. It's no longer alkaline. So Bennett, longest soap and you just completely reverse that and returned back to well, OK, so you cannot reduce the pH of your serve naturally, you can reduce it maybe a little bit from a pH, obtains the pH nine, but you can definitely not naturally bring down served at pH 5.5 to match your skin's pH because it will just reverse the reaction and you won't actually have certainly anymore. If I wanted to stamp my sir, how would I do that and when would I do that? If you have a nice Spatial Search stamp, you wouldn't stamp it at the moldings and holding stage because then your circuit is actually still too hard. Or if I press down upon C might bring the print now, okay, and I made the stream four hours ago, so be just before that 24 hour mark, maybe at the 18 hour mark so that it gives enough time for a served to hard and quite a bit. So you don't I mean, if you had just try and stamp and trace, you just going to have a blobby Mason avoiding any proper indentation in case you have to let it solidifying now so that Joel's damp, who actually pushed down in not leave a bloody mess. I would do so with this recipe at the 18 hour mark because then it should be solid enough but still soft like you could press your fingerprint in men see it, then you can also press the stamp in. How much essential oils can you put in a cert? Okay. And I'm just speaking in relation to the recipe that we've done in this course, I wouldn't add morning TIN models of an essential oil. But just bear in mind that some essential oils don't really do well with so, so I think a lot of your citrus oils, if you add too much of them, kind of destabilizes things and it might curdle something. So if you're using citrus oils, use less and also the nella just use list. Does other oils that I know that sometimes react quite funny with serpent, all your other essential oils, you can use about ten moles. That's a whole bottle to bottle of essential oil in the, so that's what I'm when we do a whole bottle of 11 to ten moles of lavender. If you're using a fragrance, Well, you can be way more generous because they completely stable. So you can add as much fragrance will almost as you want to say. I don't, I'm not talking about cups of fragrance. Well, I just mean you could add maybe 20 to 30 moles of fragrance. And thus fragrance whorls have a strongest saint that doesn't pay, that they not natural and then more stable. So you can just trust that your fragrance wells worked fine and yourself. Unrelated note some people ask how much additives can you add in January, I also say like two to three tablespoons. It's very hard to overdo it with the editors who generally you'll see that, okay, that's enough. And I'll see you adding a couple of clay to assert that is way too much. Add two tablespoons, three tablespoons and mix it in. That's my garden. I'm for beginners. You can add more and as you just learned about so thinking you'll learn what the boundaries are, it's very hard for me to answer that question because you say, well, how much editors with Eastern we need. There's coffee grounds and earths and clay and Herbst and teas. And you generally, it's very hard to overdo it. But I think maybe the most risky would be placed because it really makes it hard and dry. So I wouldn't add more than three tablespoons of clay to your server for stuporous man. Where do you buy caustic soda or sodium hydroxide? You can definitely buy for most soap specialty stores or craft and hobby stores will often habit. But you always finite and a hard way, like I said in the beginning when our scaring you at my safety talk, caustic soda is what people used to clean the drains with. So it will be all the drain cleaning products, hardware. So yes, don't be scared. That is the same stuff. Just one thing to note is make sure that you bind just caused exert as a some drain. Tina's will have poor six soda and added aluminum was something else to be more effective and drain cleaning, you definitely don't want those products. You want something that is just coursera alone. So check the label off the person in the hardware store. Is this just caustic soda and nothing else added? If that's the case, then you can use that same caustic cellular to buy the hardware to make so it might be a little more impure. So when you added the course Excited to your water, you might see that not all the white crystals or dissolving one is a little wide residues and you waiting for and it's still not dissolving. If it doesn't resolve any nodes and impure C, It's not sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide will always dissolve in water, especially if you've made sure that this moral enough water necessary and you still see those white flakes or little dust particles, then you know, let's just impurity. So you'll often find more impurities in our heartbeat, caustic soda, and you would find in the course exert that you bought from us. So specialty store. What else can you do with your so now obviously, you can watch up here with the door shut, face, wash your body with it. But I mean, what else can you do with your serve? Let me give it to other uses that you can maybe get excited about replacing in your home. First of all, you can make a makeshift liquid syrup or really brought this up when we're speaking about cutting. So you can break this down for willing warts on it, even heated up on the stove with the boiling water and just keep stirring or just leave it to dissolve. And I'll eventually turned to, depending on how much water you've added, a gel-like liquid or an actual liquid. So I wouldn't sell that liquid soap for aesthetic reasons. It still works, but it's not an action truly liquid soaps, non-professional liquid soap with good clarity and consistent texture. It will form layers that you might need to shake, but it works perfectly. Oh, so you can replace all your liquid soap products with the off cuts that you've made from cutting the syrup or you can create a hole. So bond juicer. You can also make laundry powder. In the simplest laundry powder you can make a promise to read works is great natural serve br and add salt, fine salt because it dissolves easier in a laundry machine or washing machine. So greater than the finest scraping, sitting or that medium. While you get really fun, it's almost like hasten. Use the next one that genomic greater cheese with a great jewel soap and add equal parts of salt, mix it in an essential oil if you'd like. I recommend eucalyptus essential oil because it is great at removing and the stains. So the only thing is if you've made now this tumor IC so bar, you're going to have a tumor glory power in. You probably don't want that even at a 2-break is suspended in, so rather make a plane bar so with nothing in it, and even use the CRD calculator or you can use MOD multipurpose so far recipe to make a 0% super fat. So, and I recommend using coconut oil. A soap with a 0% super fat will be ideal for cleaning. You can just create it at equal amounts of salt and voila, that is your laundry powder and it works like a bomb.
10. Demonstration: How to Layer Soap & Use Fresh Food Stuffs: In this video, I'm going to show you how to make soap and incorporate fresh ingredients like carrot juice. And I'll be making a layered serves. I'll be showing you how to incorporate fresh food stuff and how to layer soap with two layers. I have my reading measured Oils, I'm already measured caustic soda and water. Now when incorporating fresh things into Soap, and you have to deduct that from the water. So I'm using the standard hosts recipe here, which requires a 187 grams of distilled water. But because I'm using fresh juices, I have to deduct that from the waters and the original recipe calls for 2.4 to one. But that's going to be accounted for with the fresh juices. With the stuff onto lowest heat. Start warming up out Wells. Has caustic soda and we're going to add it slowly to the water. I am already outside. Just remember to have all your editors prepared beforehand annual mold. But we hail the cues. Kay, so I thought well on the lowest heat while waiting for roughly 50 degrees Celsius. K, that is hot, warm temperature. And C, I can still hold my finger in. Let me offer quite a few seconds. Is an uncomfortable. Now take it off the heat because I don't want to add any more heat tomorrow. Oil. And SFO drove. Ok. Now you can add to your oil, can blend until we reach a thin trace. Sorry. Okay, this is a very thin trace. Don't unplug the blender because you're going to use it again. So it's at this point where you divide the batch into two, In other way it but you don't really have that much time. You have to be quick with your scale if you want to divide it exactly. So I just estimate, take about half and put it. I've already got my characters in here. Put about half in a separate Pekah. And keep the other half. Put your fragrance for the orange that you want. So characterise initial oil. Oranges and oil, whatever would match the orange spurs. K this we are going to blend to a thicker trays to be at the bottom. This we're going to keep Edison trace can lend your carrot juice to a thicker. Goes very quickly. Scoop out the thicker trace. Put your fragrance oil. Boy, essential oil. Then pull your thin trace over the thicker trace for a layer. Ok, when you're done, just take anything you can cover it with plastic or old cardboard or if you have a lead covered and then you insulated in your towel is I'll be going and solid. So rapid enough blankets. What do we do that?
11. Demonstration: Natural Nerd Candy Cane Soap Bar: Okay. Okay.
12. Demonstration: How to Make Soap with Milk: Right? You know. Okay. Okay. Right. Yeah.
13. The Finish Line: Well, yeah, finally finish the natural served up cause I really hope you found Lenny since easy to follow. And I'm hoping I exactly know how to make your own natural so far. But most importantly, I hope you don't leave it here, just doing this online course, go out, they do what you need by which you Nino kitchen and actually just do it. Contact me directly or ask questions on the forum. And if it didn't loved it so much that you want to share with the world fees, router based view or view on the first page. Thank you so much for enrolling in this course. Are there from this point r you'll never be buying. So begin. Okay.
