1. Intro: Hello and welcome to this class. My name is Heidi, and in this class we are going to be working with gouache to learn about this beautiful medium. I didn't go into d to do how to create two types of backgrounds in a painting. Beautiful technique we are going to be using. This medium is very versatile. So I am telling with you many facts about these magnificent median. And you will be learning the story behind the watch, how it was created. And I can't wait to take that with you. We are going to be working in a mix and media. But I will explain to you in the next video, what do we need to do? I hope to add excited to join this class and I hope to do get inspired. And I hope if you are new to this medium, to get inspired, to use it more. Remember that you can watch my other class here on Skillshare. And we can let many, many things, beautiful techniques and to create beautiful pieces of art or on creativity to come join me here in the scripture, flow me, or you can join me on Instagram if you prefer. So I will see you in the next video. 2. Paint the Lemons First: In my previous class, I teach you how to paint loose lemons on a branch using watercolors. So I have my painting here. But then if you haven't seen that class, do need to go there and watch that class to lend to paint elements. And then we can proceed to add their backgrounds with wash. I will live, I would put the link for that class, then excretion for this class. So as you can go there and make the lemons with me using watercolors. If you prefer, you can use another subject. In this case, I am using lemons because it's very beautiful and the contents that I wanted to make work very well. But if you want to use just the background to compress it to the lab. But if you want to just accept it, then go to that class. I would put the link in the description box for this class. I was hitting the next big hit to explain the supplies that we're going to be using in the next video. 3. Supplies: Before we start talking about the materials, please remember that you need to watch first my other class about how to paint the lemons on a branch. And I will put the link in the About page for this class. So you have your lemons painting and totally dry. Now we can talk about the material for this class. You need a downward, downward, a brush, a fine brush. This is for the outline. Later. We will need to flat brushes, a bigger one and a small one. It doesn't matter the size. Use what you have at hand. We are going to be doing the background. So we need the lemons already painted and dry washi tape to fix our painting to the surface. And a piece of watercolor paper to make the water colored chat, clean water wash. We are using acrylic wash oil and using a wash in blue and black. I will see you in the next video. 4. Gouache Color Chart: Gouache is a wonderful medium to work with. And for my personal experience, you can use this as you use your watercolors. I will show you how to, how I use them and how beautiful and different end results are. We are going to be working with two types of using the wash. One will be very, very thick and that does is the normal texture of wash. And the other will be making it very light and watery mix. Just like watercolors. We are certain doing the fifth one, the darker one. And you can see I just wet my brush and pick up some of the wash from my pilot. And instead of painting, the best quality of the wash is that it is what a proof when it dries. Not like whether colors that when you put water on it, it will reactivate. Normally the wash, in this case, acrylic gouache, doesn't react to water when it becomes dry, and that is the most fabulous characteristic of this medium. So do, can paint a painting and do whatever you want. Then you can paint already. Or you can even bribe them all mixed and other different color to make contrast painting. You can also work in layers as we are going to be doing in this painting. And you can notice that the gouache is opaque color when it dries. So don't worry about it. And just, let's start with our beautiful paintings. See you in the next video. 5. Gouache Background Bookmark: I have here my materials and I did a bookmark with the lemons. You can do the same. Then do know how to paint the lemmas that and then you can use them as a pattern for your paintings in any shape or size. For this background, I wouldn't be using the wash. As I use the watercolors. I would put a little bit of my wash in a little container. And then I will add water, sufficient water to dilute the pigment. And then with the brush, I will dilute the color. I am not using the whole amount of wash that I put in the container. Just a little bit just to color the water because I want it to be very, very light in color. Not too deep blue. Just add a very light, white. And here I will be using a round brush because this space is small. So it is easier to use a round brush. In this case, I will start from the top and then I will be painting the whole painting. You'll notice a whole difference. So when we use the wash with less amount of water, when we use wash with a big amount of water, as you can see here, it becomes very watery, just like watercolors. And the final result is very beautiful as well. Remember that for the lemons, I have the whole class where I explained to you how to paint the lemons. And I put a link that will take you directly to the class. So if you haven't painted your lemon Did you can watch that class first and then come back and learn with me. To add these back around with gouache card. You can just look this class, go to pay the lemons, and continue with me painting the background. I would love to have to in my class. Of course, you can do this technique with any color that you want from the gouache. And it will give you this sensation that you are painting with watercolors. Many describes wash paint. Somewhere between acrylic and watercolors. The wonderful characteristics of wash, or for example, they are opaque or like whether colors which are transparent, gouache is opaque. With the addition of water, they can be semi-transparent. They give you a matte finish. And the paintings do. We always have a matte finish. They provide you with rich colors. Wash has more pigment and the water corners that for producing a rich and vibrant colors. They can be water soluble or they can be acrylic. Wash the leg, the one I'm using on this painting. If you add one thing, they become more transparent. So you don't need to add another medium to make them lighter in color. It dries quickly and the color tend to be a little different than the chin. When it gets wet. You can let the colors, as we're learning in this class, and half a mile deep concentration of color. You can use this in many, many creation of ours, like calligraphy, airbrushing, fine details, illustrations, marbling any way you want. But it's always amazing thing to experiment with different mediums and get to know them, using them. And then you can decide what is your favorite or what is your preference. The more mediums you were with, the end, you will have more bigger range of techniques and effects into account. Discover many ways to work with them and also work with them together. And to create wonderful paintings and piece of arts IN letting these very, very light in color as you can see. But if you prefer to add another layer, you can do it. After you finish this first layer. You can right away add a second layer. Yet you don't need to wait until it's dry. As you can see, I can add in some little touches with color in the car and the coordinates and in some spaces of my painting because I want editor with the splashes of more by when I'm blue. And it will make a nice contrast. At the moment. When the painting is dry and we start to add in the outline, you will see it. It gets his in another level they're painting. In the next video, we are going to be outlining the lemons. I would let this dry and I will see you in the next video. 6. Bookmark Gouache Outline: Now that our painting is completely dry, I will start painting the outline or adding the outlining. And for that, I am using a very fine brush wash. And I am not, I do it in the wash as much as we did with painting the background. Just wetting the brush to make the wash around easily through the outer lining. I really started adding delta nine, starting with the leaves and then going through them, branch and the whole lemon. And I am using black gouache. And while we're doing that, I went to do a little bit of the story of wash. Before wash was an ad product, it was a technique back before the Renaissance in which white color was added to water base colors to achieve an opaque look. This look became very popular. So popular in fact, that the product was invented as an easy way to create the opaque look that everyone's loved. There are two ways in which wash is manufactured. One that led the artist add white themselves in another that has the white extended included in the product. It is very interesting to know how the products that we use today as normal thing where invented or created because people had a necessity. And we use that today like a normal thing. And today we have we have many. We have two actually option of gouache. One is water-based and the other is wash acrylic, like the one I use here in this painting. Mixing wash with acrylic give the versatility of being a waterproof medium to paint in. It makes the colors are a little bit more vibrant. So when you use wash, water base is more diluted by water and you need to work differently with that kind of wash. So I hope you enjoyed this little history about the gouache. And they do get interested and inspired to use this medium a little bit more and get to know them better. Maybe to become a fan of this medium? Or do we start using this a little bit more? Of course, wash may have many the acetabulum qualities, but it is not for everyone. With any media. I suggest you give a try, try it, experiment with it. And maybe you will fall in love with it, or maybe you will decide that it is not for you. And that is completely okay. This is the whole thing above a creative journey. So your experiment as much as you can with as much possible mediums do finding your way or you are interested in. And that is very nice. This is, this is the opportunity for you to grow as an artist and become better than in what you do. Always a give a try and keep an open mind for everything. And always you can decide what you will use. More or less are things that do will not love to work with. And then finish it. The little details here. As you can see, I can add in some dots on the lemons so that resemble that. They are ripe. Yeah, perfect for him from nature. You can add also a Smiley face. So the lemons, and they will look super cute. If this is your first time using wash, it is very important that you experiment with the two types with the acrylic wash. With this, the modern and traditional wash with these waterways. And then you can decide which one is best for you. In my personal experience, I prefer to work. With the acrylic gouache because it gives me more flexibility when I'm working. And I have been working with since many years. And I really like the Finnish mate that if gift to my paintings that I can use it combined with other mediums, like watercolors or acrylics. And they're really nice for me, the acrylic gouache. And it's so easy to clean up. And it gives me the possibility to make corrections before it dries completely as they dry fast, but not so fast unlike the normal gouache or they're water-based wash. And I love that in my paintings. And I just need to use a very little amount of paint when I am painting because when it dries, I cannot use that anymore. So I control the portions of my gouache amount. And it really gives a beautiful and easy look to the paintings. And you can use acrylic wash in so many. Surface. From paper to boot, to whatever material you want is really a nice medium to work with. Once you have try it. Somehow mustered the quantity unit. I hope to get the inspiration after painting in this little painting here to try the wash and to see your beautiful creations medicine. This is the last leaf of our whole painting. And I will add all the details it needs outside and inside the leaves. And our painting will be finally complete. I will let this dry completely and then I will sign up my painting. I already peel off the washi tape. I will show you how to do it in, in the other. So here it is, our beautiful painting, a bookmark. And you can use this, the gift for someone or for yourself and enjoying the beauty of it. I can't wait to see what degree eight. Upload your class project on the class project section for this class, though, in this class we are lending to use gouache into techniques. We have seen the first and now we are going to be working on the second technique, which is that the color using wash to create contrast and a background. I will see you in the next video. 7. Painting the Gouache background: Let's start by fixing or painting to the surface using washi tapes. And I will show you how I do it so the date doesn't break my paper. I just use a tower. This is clean. And I put the size of the tape that I am using onto the tower. So the glue get a little bit lighter so it doesn't stick to my paper. So Strunk. And when a young peeling off, you will see that it will come out very easily. I will do this with all my tapes. So you can see how this works. And you can do the same. And when, when fixing your paper to the surface, start with the same size as I'm doing here. The lateral sides and then the opera and the down part of my paper. So when i then BD need off, it is easier to remove the tapes from the paper. I said take in consideration the size of the paper, the frame. Try to keep the framing even. So when you peel off the paper and you have the background, it looks cohesive and even and no one's eye bigger than the other. So that they do with us. It doesn't look so nice. So thank in consideration that when you are ready, then we can proceed to start painting the first layer with wash. In this painting, we are using the thickest consistency of the wash. So for that we're using the flat brushes. The biggest for the outer part of the painting and the smallest for in-between the leaves and the near the lemons. I have here my gouache in my palette. And I will just wet my brush a little bit and then start painting from the coordinates, the center, and letting the in-between the lemons last. Ece, it is easier for me to go in those little spaces between the leaves and the limbs. This is the first layer with wash. So don't worry about the evenness of the color because we are adding another, another ligand and there will be, we are going to be correcting those on even colors that you see right now. As you can see, if you use more water than the wash will move, just like with the watercolors that you. When do you use watercolors? Try to when you are painting the background, I tried to have an organizing of the direction you are using your brush. As you are seeing in the painting. I, starting from one side and then finish it. Finish it the side from top to bottom first and then starting in the other side. So I have more control over how the color is going into the paper. As I was telling you before, don't worry about the unevenness of the column. Because this is the fierce layer we are adding to this pain. We're adding here two layers or background looks very dark and makes a beautiful contrast with lemons. And I choose the color blue because it makes a really beautiful contrast. But you can choose, or you can experience or explore other colors and see how it looks. I recommend to use a flat brush to paint the product background on the outer side of the painting. But if you don't have a flat brush yet, don't worry about it. Just use a round brush and try to, it will do the work. It is just like it is just that using a flat brush make it easier for me at least to paint the background here. As you can see, I enlighten all the tricky parts of the painting in white because I will be changing my brush to a smaller one. So it is easier for me just in this one. I will proceed to paint in those indicate digital spaces. With my wash. Using Turner acrylic wash. This is a Japanese brand, but you can use any brand of gouache that you find in your local store or on the Internet, or that you have at home. And it would do the job. When painting around this object that you have. In this case are the lemmas and the leaves go slowly, so you don't go with your color into the subject or into the lemons in here. And be careful of not gentle soul. You don't disrupt your painting. You will see that when we add the second layer, it will transform completely the way you are seeing endure painting right now. We will be also add in outlining the painting and you will see the beautiful contrast and the playfulness that we will create in this painting. And remembered. To go as low as you're painting, you don't need to rush. This is like a meditation process and you're giving, creating something beautiful. So take your time and paint with consciousness. M and judging the protein, the process, of course, of creating a beautiful painting. This is a real time painting. So do you see how my grid most is in real time? And not just fast forward here. Because I want to, I want you to feel that you're painting with me in this class, in this very calming and very beautiful to paint together. So we have our little painting club here. These spaces, this model space, sad, the trickiest one. We are taking our time painting very carefully. And don't worry if the color-code a little bit on the painting. After all. Because we are going to be outlining the lemons and the leaves and the branch. So today to do your best, and I know that you are doing your best. And that's all we want here. When we finish this layer, we're going to let the painting, the background, the first layer, background dry completely before adding the second layer. So take that in consideration as well. Because this is a very long process. And it will be the April depends on how big is your painting and how or how small is the painting. I can't wait to see what you create for sure. And if you choose another color, I'm very, I'm very curious about that. And to see how you get DVT has flown this process. So I think the last touches and I will let this painting that I completely, and then I will see you in the next video where we're going to add the second layer. I will say during the next year. 8. Adding a Second Gouache Layer: Now that our painting is completely dry, we will start painting the second layer. And for that, you just need to take the wash with the least amount of water in your brush so the paint doesn't dissolve too much. Go slowly in this process. Because we are looking for a very dark finish, this background. And makes sure that you're painting that the fifth layer is completely dry. Then start painting from the bottom to the upper side of the painting. And here keep the evenness little bit more in mind when you are tracing with your brush. The secret here is to have your brush wet but clean in the towel and then pick him picking up the wash from your palette. As you can see in the pilot, the wash is in a very firm consistency. So when I paint with it, the color stay as dark as possible. When do I find him with this size? Then you can start painting the other side. Doing the same. Look how big and how creamy consistency of gouache. Because the first letter is completely dried, it doesn't react when I paint with a new layer of color. And the finish will be a very dark background, making a nice dramatic contrast with my lemons, with which are in watercolors. In, in a very polite jello. As we did in the class where we were learning how to paint these loose lemons. On average. Now we are going to be using the smaller brush as we did in the first part and adding the wash. The direct on the painting. The same technique. The brushes are almost dry, just a little bit wet with water. And picking up the watch from the pilot and adding it to my painting. And the finish will be very even. And making a very nice contrast with the subject. You will start seeing the contrast the when the whole layer is done with, with this darker layer of color. And you will see how the lemons will pop up in your painting. Because it gives it a deeper dimension. And it makes a really beautiful effect when you look at the picture or at the painting. Take your time and painted as, even as you can in this layer. Because this will be the left. Also, you can add another layer if you find that when it dries, the color is not at that as you want. You can keep adding layers. There we do need goes to load. In these areas where the leaves and the lemon starches almost and where the space is very limited. And remember, we're going to add a outlined on the whole subject. I hope you can expedience how the lemma says that the pop-up into the painting and the gouache is not even did that. I really like this combination of color, district color works really nice together. And alpha, I know that another color that can play a big, nice contrast in this painting could be violet or even red or dark, magenta. So I hope you experiment with those colors. I will usher in a future painting because I really like these contrast in these dramatic painting. Go there in those spaces to feel like you need the more gouache. And when we finished this part, this second layer, we would wait until they die. We will see if the color is nice. He said really dark as we want. And then we will proceed to add the outline. I will see you in the next video. 9. Outlining the Lemons: Our background is completely dry. And now we are entering the last part of this beautiful painting, which is adding the outline. And for that we need a fine brush. The final you have. Or if you don't have any fine brush, you can use a fine liner. In black. We are painting the outline with the color black using wash. Of course. We are going to be tracing the lines of our lemons. In this case. I slowly and using the least amount of water on our brush, again, I just make it wet when I need to make the color a little bit more easy to trace the line. We are going to be tracing the line and making it a little bit thick in some places and not in the halls options only in some places. So we can make a little bit of contrast. I squared tried to emulate a real lemon. No, they are not perfect in shape. They are more like nature made them on even in the US is perfection. And it will go around the whole shape of your lemon Bette slowly and going through the whole painting. Try to maintain that shape that you have. Underpainting. So didn't disrupt the painting phase. We are going to be doing the outline. And at the end, we are going to be adding some details inside the lemons. For the leaves. We're going through the leaves. And inside the leaves. It gives a beautiful effect. You will see when it is complete that the whole painting take another level and then know that face, so to speak. Another suggestion for the outline is you can use a brown that gap preferable what gouache to make the outline. And it gives a really nice effect as well. But they choose to black because it gives, in this painting in this quarter that I am using the best contrast. You can try it before starting to paint on the final painting and see how the colors work together. For that is so important that you always make your color charts. And to taste the colors, the wash or the watercolors. Whichever medium you are using. Before you start painting on the final piece, may take your time to make those testing before you complete your painting. So you can discover that some colors work better together. Or that you can mix them and make them darker or lighter. And they will give your painting a more refreshing view. Look. It is always a fascinating experience to play with your mediums. This is all about, does this all that you need to be doing? Notice when I when I am placing the lines that I am making some places of the line thicker to make a bigger contrast. On the other hand, if you're using a fine liner, then you will notice that this is easier to trace your lines. Notice that I am making this line, the pickup. So my lemon. The effect is more deepness in the painting. Now we're adding some little dots. And this will make the lemmas a little more cuter. I really like this effect. I don't know why, but they look so cute. You can even do a faith Smiley face, Smiley face on the lemons and they were super cute. Now, add in some light inside the leaves. Then we will proceed to build off the washi tape. I will see you in the next video. 10. Peeling the Washi Tape Off: There is nothing more satisfying than peeling off the Washington and it comes easily off. So I showed you the technique at the beginning. So I hope you are having a blast building of the washi tape from your painting without damaging your paper. And your frame is even looks cohesive. Look how satisfied in disease in our painting is looking very beautiful. It is completely dry. I waited for it to dry completely before taking the washi tape off. Better satisfying. Or painting is ready. Now we can enjoy and we can then use this card or as a painting for home or to give to someone. And don't forget to always put your signature in your paintings. So do left and mark that. This is the final piece, the final dissolved. And I hope you enjoyed this and I can't wait to see what you create and what color to choose for the background. I will see you in the next video. 11. The Class Project: For your class project, this is very easy. We just need to share with us in the class project section for this class. Any of your work during materials, just get is due to be anything you want to share with us and upload that to the class project for this class, I can't wait to see what you create. I wasn't doing the next video. 12. Final Words: Congratulations to the whole class, and I hope to get the inspiration to use these beautiful medium more in your paintings and to use them. Mix it with other ones or alone. I can wait to see your beautiful creations. And I thank you for taking my class. And I invite you to follow me here on Skillshare and the watch my other classes, which are packed with beautiful idea, beautiful subjects, and the different techniques that you can use your own and apply your own creativity. I will see you in the next class. And I hope to keep creating and thank you so much for taking my class. Bye bye.
