1. Intro: Hi, I'm Maya Faber. I'm a surface pattern
designer and online teacher. And in this class, I'm going to teach
you how to create a Valentine's Day themed Mini pattern collection
in Procreate. We will explore how
to find inspiration from a specific theme
and how to work with seasonal colors to make
your mini collection look cohesive and on point
for the holiday. I will guide you step by step on how to create the
pattern from scratch in Procreate and how to use
patter layout templates to make the entire process
more fun, easy, and seamless. In this class, I'm
using my free Powerpack procreate brush set featuring my favorite procreate brushes, including two Paal
layout templates that I will show you how
to use during the lessons. Using the power
pack is optional, but I highly recommend
it to follow along and get the most out
of the learning experience. This is a fun, creative class, perfect for anyone
looking to practice designing pattern collections
around a specific theme. You will need a basic understanding
of Procreate to watch the class and have created at least a
few patterns before. If you never made a
pattern in prorocrate, I would recommend checking out my class on creating
an editable pattern in Procreate with calibrations
before diving into this one. And if you're eager to dive even deeper
into pattern design, be sure to check out pattern
Rebs my membership program. In Pattern Rebels, you will get access to monthly classes, design resources like
appropriate brushes, color palettes, sk gaps, and pattern layout templates. Plus, we have monthly design challenges,
feedback sessions, and Q&A opportunities
where you can ask me anything about design or
running a creative business. You can learn more at
pattern rebels.com. So with all of this
said, let's start to create our Valentine's
Day collection.
2. Your Project: This class, your
project is to create your own Valentine's Day themed mini pattern
collection in Procreate. Your collection will include at least three
patterns inspired by the Valentine's Day theme and using a seasonal
color palette. Feel free to use my Powerpack
Procreate brush set to make the process easier or
work with your own brushes. Once you completed
your mini collection, share your patterns in
the project gallery. I can wait to see
what you create.
3. Downloads & Resources: This class, you
will have access to my free Power PAC
Procreate brush set, which includes 20 of my favorite brushes designed to streamline your pattern
making process. This set also includes two pattern layout
templates that we will use during the class
to make designing your mini collection more
efficient and enjoyable. While using the Power
PAC is optional, I highly recommend it for the best possible
learning experience. To download the brush set, you can download the PDF under Projects and Resources
section here in class and then tap
the link in the PDF. Or you can go to
maafab.com slash POWEPAC. Here, you will write in your
name and your email address. And that will give you your
power pack to your inbox. I've also included a free
procreate color palette in this class with
a Halloween theme. To download this color palette, you can go to the PDF in the project and resources
section and tap the link. Throughout the class, I'm also using my Pinterest
board as inspiration. I made this board
specifically for you, the students in my class. It's a Valentine's
Day themed board. Feel free to just
stick to this board, or if you want to gather
your own inspiration, you can do that as well. If you're interested in
downloading and using the Procreate mockups that I'm showing you quickly
here in this class, you can subscribe to my
Pattern Rebels membership. And the All Access
membership plan, and that will bring you these five stunning procreate mockups. It's not a must at all
to use these mockups, but I just wanted
to show you them and let you know how to
get your hands on them. So these are exclusive for my Paraibs members in the
All Access membership plan.
4. Make a Pattern Template: First thing that we will do in this class is to make
a pattern template. Just follow my lead here. If you don't understand where we're doing this
or how to use it, you will notice this later on in class. Just
follow my lead. We will create a new
Canvas in Procreate, tap the little plus up here and the plus folder symbol there. I usually go for 3,000 pixels
in width and in height. That's my standard size, and 300 in DPI. That will bring me a maximum
amount of layers of 204. If you have less layers here,
it really doesn't matter. I think we need maybe 20 or
30 layers at the maximum. It all depends on the
storage of your iPad, how many layers you get there. And then you will
tap color profile, and I usually use the
first SRDB color profile that is under display P three. Then I tap create, and
here I have a new Canvas. So what we will do
now, I can just bring out my color palette up here and just bring out my premade color palette or use any colors
that you want to. And what we will do is
just to fill some layers. So I will tap the
first layer and tap fill layer with any color. Tap the plaster at a new layer, and I will fill that
layer with another color, you can use the same colors
if you want to as well, but it's easier to
see what we are doing if we are using
different colors. So choosing another color, filling the layer,
and another color. And filling the layer. I have four layers in different colors. Then I can shut down
my color palette on the X mark, zoom out the bit, and now I will tap my first
layer in order up here, layer four, tap the
transform tool, tap in the top left corner node. Make sure that you have
the chain symbol tapped in and type in 1,500 pixels. Then I will tap my layers panel, tap in the next layer, layer number three, tap
the transform tool, tap in the top
right corner node, and type in 1,500. Then I will tap the next
layer, darker pink, I will zoom out a bit
before I tap the layer, tap the transform tool, and tap the bottom left corner
node and type in 1,500. And then the next layer, the transform tool, the
bottom right corner node, and type in 1,500. In order to make this right and to not leave you with white
lines in your patterns, you need to be very
sure that you don't accidentally nudge the screen and move your boxes around here, because if you do, you might get white lines
in your patterns. If you get a white
line in your pattern, I would recommend to
check out my class about leveling up your pattern
design in Procreate, where I have a full lesson about all my tips and tricks on
how to avoid white lines. Okay, so back to this lesson, we have four layers. I will tap the first
layer, tap select, and then save a
load down here in the selection tool and tap the plus to add
the selection one. Then I will tap the next
layer in the layers panel, tap select, save a load
and a little plus. Tap the next layer, tap select, save a load and the plus. And then next layer, select, save a load and plus. So if I would uncheck
the selection tool, and check it again, tap it
in again, tap, save a load. If I tap the
different selections, here you can see that I have
four different selections, and there's four perfect squares that are perfectly aligned to the edges of my canvas and there's no white
lines in between. What we can do now is just swipe these layers together
to merge them. And here we have our
finished pattern template. I will just tap gallery and rename this to
pattern template. And then you can reuse this for our Sasa patterns later on.
5. Finding Inspiration: So now it's time to find inspiration for our
Valentine's Day patterns. I have a Pinterest board, which I already mentioned in the Downloads and
Resources lesson that you will find a link to this in the downloadable
PDF here in class. I've just saved a bunch
of Pinterest or I mean, Valentine's Day inspired images. You can go ahead and save your
own images if you want to, or you can just use
my pre made board. So for this Valentine's
Day mini collection, I will use some very symbolic
Valentine's Day motifs. So I'm thinking that my hero
pattern will be hearts. That's like an obvious
theme for Valentine's Day. And I will use colors that
are pink and reddish. And I think that I want
to go for something. I definitely want to go for something simple as
the blender print, maybe maybe like dots. That one is nice, or stripes. Maybe dots for this one. And for the secondary pattern, I really like the idea
of this like XOXO. So maybe it's a common
recurring thing here in my board, XOXO. So I might go for like
a letters pattern, a very simple letters pattern
for my secondary print, where it says, XOXO. Okay, so now I have had a
look at my inspiration board, and in the next
lesson where we will sketch out our collection, I will show you how I use these inspirational
images to do that.
6. Sketching the Collection: We are back in Procreate, and now I want to show you
how I sketch my collection. You can just use any type
of canvas size here. I already have a canvas
that is 3,000 times 3,000 pixsie with SRGB Colmon.
I will just use that one. If you want to sketch on
a screen size canvas, you can use that one. That really doesn't
matter. What I will do first is just to
bring up Pinterest. I will tap the three
little dots at the top, tap split view and Pinterest. And here I have my
Valentine's Day board, I will tap and drag that
to the left so I have my pinter to the left and my
procret window to the right. And I have included a color
palette here for you, the Valentine's Day,
Procrit color palette, which is free to use
for all purposes. And throughout the
class later on when we create our
patterns, I will use this. But I just wanted to
show you first how I create these palettes
where I find inspiration. So let me just use I
will use the drcryl and I will go ahead and check out the colors
of my pinterest board. So there's definitely pink. Let's bring out the color panel. And here we have different pink. So I am just going to
draw with a dry acrylic, a little bit larger in
size maybe around 12%. I'm just going to
draw some blobs here. So I'm going to use
different pink colors. Those were a little
bit more peachy. I might want something
that is a little bit more pinky pink. Like that. So I usually go for if I find the
color that I like, you can go for several
different hues of that, like light, medium, and darker. And then we can try things
out later on when we color block or sketch and see which of these
that we want to use. So I will go, oops,
I will go to, like, red over here because I definitely want
some kind of red. Well, that one looks amazing, and then a darker one. And I might want the
more like a maroon red. I could go for like a peachy, more peachy color,
brighter peachy color. And then I definitely
want some kind of creamy white or soft pink white. Something like that. So that
is actually just this board, this inspiration board was really simple because
everything is, like, red and pink. So I would just find different
red and pink colors. And then I will have
my colors here. And when I create my sketch and color block my sketch for
my mini pattern collection, I can use these colors to see which of the colors will I
include into the collection, which of the colors
are appropriate to use together and
things like that. But for now, I will just uh, move my color panel here. And on this layer
with the colors, I can just rename that to colors so that I know
what's on that layer. And then I can tap this and just make it a little bit smaller
and drag it up here. So then you would have your
colors here and you can just use them for your patterns. I will just fetch these free hand like this and drag them down just so that I have
some free space here. So from now on, I will use
my premade color palette, but that is how I created
this color palette. You can see that the colors
are really similar in my premade and in
this that we did now. But I'm tapping and dragging
my color panel over there. And then I will start
to draw my sketch. So first, you can
create squares. You don't need to do this
if you don't want to, but I really enjoy having squares at first so that
I know kind of my brain understands how many
patterns are we supposed to create and where am I going
to place them on this canvas. We will actually
when we color block, which we will do
just in a minute, these black squares
will kind of disappear, but then you have the colors
in the squares on one layer. And then we can tap the
plus to add a new layer, and here we can just rename
this to backgrounds. You don't need to create
separate layers for all of your motifs and all of
your colors in this sketch. I will create the backgrounds
on a separate layer as it will be easier to try out different
background colors then. So then I will tap my
color panel lav over here, and then I will go
for dry acrylic, and I want to choose
some backgrounds. So let me just see. The first one I'm thinking
will be like a hearts pattern, so I will create, I think, several
different hearts in red and pink on a
cream white background. At least that is my idea. So next we are doing
another pattern. I definitely want a
pattern with, like, a pink background, so this could be pink then.
Let's try that out. So as you can see, I'm
drawing on top of my squares, but I don't mind that, and I don't mind them
to be perfectly square shaped because this is just my idea sketch for
the pattern collection. Then the next one, if we
have one white and one pink, we might try to go
for, like, a red one. We can always try that out
and see if we like that. Just as we did with we
found some dots somewhere. Where were the dots
on the hearts? Where were the dots on
the hearts, that image? I can't seem to find it now, but like this one
with the red and the pink motifs on top. So let's just start like this, and then we might change
these colors later on. So back in my Pindresbard, and I will tap the plus, and I will rename
this to motifs. And here I will have
hearts on this one. You could go ahead and sketch, you know, with a perfect
pencil if you want to. As these motifs
are really simple, I will just go ahead with we
can try out the dry acrylic, and I will draw hearts
in different colors. I might go down in brush
size a little bit, maybe 8%. I can zoom into this pattern, and oops, a little
bit smaller than 3%. And I will just
draw some hearts. I'm thinking that this will
be like a tossed pattern. So I will flip my canvas around and draw the hearts in different angles here
and different colors. And already here, I can try out my different colors
together and see kind of which colors do I
want to use in this pattern, how many colors and which of these colors
work well together. So maybe these are a little
bit too many colors here. And then we can
try out and see we can create some hearts
and then we can see, Okay, how many colors do I
want to use of the hearts. As you can see, I'm
not super detailed about how the hearts are tossed
and everything like this. I'm just getting
my idea down here. So let's try out some colors. We could definitely go
for the darker red. I think that is a nice contrast. Maybe we could go for the
darker and the lighter one. So then I could tap and drag to fill this
red with that one. And I'm not sure
about what I want to do with peachy hearts. So let me just see if
I feel that one red, and this one could
be like darker pink. This one could be lighter pink. No, this one could
be darker red. And this one could be lighter pink and maybe one
more over here. Okay, so something I don't
know, something like this. I'm not sure about the colors, maybe I want to bring in. Like a peach color. No, I don't think
that I want to. I want to have four colors, and I think that these are the four colors that I want to use. I'm not sure what I want
to do in the background. Maybe I could add Well, tap the background layer and tap the plus to add a new
layer to try things out. Maybe I can add, like, little lines in the background to make it a little
bit more interesting. I have this pattern brush, the thin stripes here. So maybe that would
be something. So that is my idea for
the first pattern. And for me, this
sketch is enough, and I will move on
to the next pattern. So for the next one, I really
wanted this XOXO thing. And let me see. I might want, like, red on pink. And if we just write Oops let me just take
the darker red there. And if I just write with,
like, bubbly letters, X O X. Oh. Oops. Do I want it to be a
little bit twisted like this, or maybe I can select this
and just flip it around. Adjust the selection with
the yellow box there and maybe we like XOXO, and then swipe down
with three fingers and tap copy and tap paste that
will bring me two of those. I'll just twist it
up again and then twist that one up
again, select it. Oops. I'm on the wrong layer now
because it's on this layer. I'll select that one
and twist that one. I just selection,
and maybe this one. I could do oxo oxo
then tap merge down. And maybe I can do swipe around these and tap copy and
paste so that I have more. Maybe I can place them
like that instead. Then I will just swipe
right on that layer. Now I'm just trying out
how this idea would work, but I think that this would
be a good idea to have XOXO, xoxo and it goes up in both directions,
horizontal and vertical. XOXO, oxo. So that is actually a good idea. Then I can swipe these
layers together. And it doesn't matter if you have motifs on
this layer as well, and this layer is just a sketch. So for now, let me just
select that layer. Maybe I want to go
for white here, I can do X O, XO XO. So all of the O's might
be just in one color, and all of the Xs
can be in one color. To have color drop there. So either like this or maybe, let me just try that out again. Contin your filling XO XO. Every other row could be white and Oops, not that one. White. And every other
row could be dark red. I really like this idea, so I'm going to keep that
and see what we would do with it when we draw
our actual pattern. So for this one, I think I just want to create
the dots pattern. I will swipe away pin tress, so I have my full canvas
here, and then zoom in. And let me just try
that idea with, like, pink on red. So now I'm not on the
background layer, no, so I will draw, like, larger pink dots. On the red, I don't
want them in a row. Kind of randomly placed. And on the red, I
don't like that red, so I will tap the
background layer, tap this red color,
tap and drag. So that looks super
cute. We could do that. We could also do
like with a white. But let's just try out
the dark red there. Okay, so now we have
our finished sketch for the pattern.
It's super simple. You don't need to
mind the layers here or how you
created this file, but I'm happy with this sketch, and it's time to move on to
create our first pattern. We will start with a hero.
7. Hero pattern - Sketching: Okay, so it's time to draw our first pattern.
It's the hero pattern. Before we start with
that, I want to tap actions panel, share PEG, and just share this sketch to my camera roll so
that I can use it as reference when I
create my patterns. The first thing
that we will do is to select the pattern template, which is what we will use to create the patterns
in this class. And then I will tap duplicate and I will tap into one
of the pattern templates. So here you can just clear this first layer because
we don't need that, so I will swipe to the
right and tap clear. And now we want to
create the sketch, but the very first thing is that I will create
the background. I will rename that
layer to background, and I can just go for you can just go straight away for
the cream white background, actually that we want to use, I will select the cream white, tap background and
tap fill layer. Next, I will tap the
plus to add a new layer. And here I wanted to show you how to use one of my
pattern layout templates, which is included in a
Powerpack brush set. So it's this one,
the Ts tc tangles. If you enjoy using
pattern layout templates, I really recommend checking out my membership
pattern Rebels, where you get one new
pattern layout template each month and also
my patent toolkit, which is included
in the membership, but you can also
buy it separately, where I offer 25 different
pattern layouts for Procreate. But now back to this
lesson and we're going to use the toast rectangles. I will tap that. I
usually go for black. You can go for any
color that you want to, and then I will go for
around 60% in brush size. Make sure that you place this stamp within the canvas so that you don't get
it cut off like that. So place it within your canvas, tap one time, then you can tap the transform tool
and fit to Canvas. Now I will tap this layer, rename it to layout, and I will tap the N symbol and drag down opacity
to around ten or 15%. Okay, so now we have the
placement of rmtifs and the layouts are made
so that we draw motifs within the guides here. But then you can always
rearrange later on. It all depends on what type
of motifs you're drawing, but they are made
for you to quicker, easier and to have
more fun, actually, while you create
patterns because you already have a layout
for your patterns. As you can see,
there are numbers. The numbers are twisted. So if we would create now
we're creating hearts, but if we create motifs
that have an apparent, let me just show
you what I mean. Like a top and right. Let's just say we're creating butterflies. Then I will create
like one butterfly in this direction and one
in this direction, so that is why the
numbers are twisted. But as we are drawing hearts, that really doesn't
matter for this purpose. But what we will do is to draw our hearts within
these rectangles, and we will use the numbers
to separate the colors. So the number three here and the number three there
will have the same colors. Okay, so that was
a little bit about the basics of the
paraleo templates, and now it's time to
start to draw our hearts. So I have a new layer here and I will rename
this to sketch. And I will sketch
out my hearts with the perfect pencil from the
power pack and black color. I have around 20% in brush size, and now I will just
start to draw my hearts. I think that I want these kind of longer shaped
hearts like that. And you don't need to have them completely
in the rectangle. And I try to twist so that
not all hearts are like this, you know, because I want to make create the tossed pattern. So I will do one over there. This is a rough sketch, and then maybe one over here. So some are a little bit bigger and some are a
little bit smaller. That looks really, really good. And now we will just
flip the pan around. And here is when we find use for the pattern
layout template. So I will swipe to
the right on all of these three layers
and tap group. Then I will tap the group, tap the selections tool. If we get an error message that says something like
this, tap cancel, tap into one of the layers and make sure that
you don't have color fill selected because that will bring you
that error message, and it won't allow you to
choose the whole group. If you still can't choose
the group for some reason, you can select all of
the layers instead. The result will be
exactly the same. But I will select the
group, the selection tool, save and load, tap
selection four. Doesn't matter in which order you select these selections, but I will tap selection four, tap the Transform tool, flip vertical, and
flip horizontal. Then I will tap the
selections tool to deselect and tap it again to
select and selection three, tap the transform tool, flip vertical, and
flip horizontal. Then I will tap the
selections tool to deselect and tap it again to
select selection two, tap the transform tool, flip vertical, and
flip horizontal. I will tap the selections tool again to select selection one, tap the transform tool, flip vertical, and flip horizontal. Now I have flipped the
outrages to the in, and I want to go
for my sketch layer and draw the rest of my heart. So here, as this heart
is that direction, I would draw this one
in this direction, and let's just see this
one is that direction, then I would draw this
one over here somewhere. And maybe this one should be in that direction and here we have one more,
then we make this. I'm trying to not create all of the hearts in
the same direction. Here we might have an issue.
I can see that already. I will select this because
it's too sharp line there. I will select this one
with the selection tool, tap the transform tool and
just flip it up a little bit, and then I can select this
one so that they're not exactly same line because that will cannot
disturb our pattern. I will actually just flip
that up a little bit. Now I feel that the space
between these are much better. So we already created
a sketch now, and it's time to try it out, actually, I will turn
off the layout layer. And I will swipe down
with three fingers, tap copy all, swipe down
with three fingers, tap paste, and I will tap the three little dots,
split view Safari. And here I have my
Panatsro on my website, which is a free tool
for you to use. There's a link to it in the
description of this class, and you can tap and drag to check out your sketch
in the pattern sketcher. Here you can zoom in and zoom out and see how
your pattern is repeated. So this looks really good to me. I don't know if we
have any issues. It might be this heart that I might want to
flip up a little bit, but I can also change that while I actually draw my motifs. Let's just go back
to Procreate and we can repeat this in
procreate as well. I swipe to the right to tap duplicate if you don't want
to use the pattern tester, and then I can tap
the top layer, tap the transform
tub the bottom left, cornonde, top left, cornonde, type in 1,500 when you have
the chain symbol tapped in, tap the next layer, the top right cornonde, type in 1,500. Then the next layer, the
bottom right cornonde, type in 1,500. I mean the bottom left. Have a trouble with
left and right today, and then the next layer, zoom out the bit
so that I can tap the bottom right
corninod and 1,500. So now you can see how your pattern is
repeated in Procreate, I can just swipe those together. And I think that
this looks good. I might want to flip this
pattern around a little bit, but I might wait
actually until I draw my motifs because I
think it's a minor issue, and it will be easier to see when I've drawn my
motifs in a color. So the sketching is finished, I can just delete this layer, and now we have the
sketch for our pattern.
8. Hero Pattern - Make the Pattern: So let's start to draw
our first pattern, our hero pattern, which
is the busiest one of the three. And
we have a sketch. We have a layout, so we know
which colors will be we. And we need to start
to draw motifs. So the first thing that I
will do is tap the N on the sketch layer
and just bring it down to around ten or 15%. And then I will tap the
plus to add a new layer, and I will separate the
colors on different layers. That way, it will be easier
to recolor later on. So we can just bring
out our color palette. I will use my premade
color palette, and start to draw our motifs. So first, let's just
start with this one. I can go for the light pink, and then I can also
rename that layer to light pink and draw my motifs. I will try to use
the dry acrylic for the hearts here is one of my favorite
brushes at the moment, and check out which size. This size is probably
good around 7%, and then I will draw the hearts. So this is a fairly
simple pattern as the motifs are so simple, and you get a nice texture
already by using this brush. I might want a little bit
more longer hearts like that. I don't need to mind the
placement of the motifs. Really match at this moment. I will draw them on
top of my sketch, but we can always move
them around later on. So I know if I turn on the layout layer that these
four are different colors. So let's just draw
different colors here, and then we will flip the pan around and we will
reuse the colors. Let me turn off the layout
layer, tap the plaster, add a new layer, and we could go for the dark red, for example. So dark red. I'll rename the
layer to dark red, and then I will twist around
my canvas so that I can draw this oops heart over there. And filling it in. Like that. Next one, let's go for the darker pink with this one so that I have kind of pink,
pink, red, red. So I will tap the plaster in the layers panel to add a new, and I will just rename this the pink and choose the darker
of the pink colors. Draw this heart trying to get, like, a good shape of that. So that is probably good. And then this one, a new layer, tap the
plaster, a new layer. And let's go for let's try
this light the red color. So I will just rename this two, red and then draw my heart
somewhere around here. Maybe not in the exact same
direction as that one. So already, I can just twist the hearts around
just a little bit, based on what I see on the
hearts that I've drawn. Okay, so I'm happy
with this, I think. Maybe it's a little bit thin. A little bit bolder. Like that. So now we have four
of the hearts, and it's time to flip
our pattern around. I will tap the new group, tap the selections tool, Save and load, selection four, tap the transform tool, flip vertical, and
click horizontal. Tap the selections
tool to deselect, tap it again to
select Save and load, selection three, tap
to transform tool, flip vertical, and
click horizontal. Tap the selection tool
to select and tap it again to select Save
and load selection two, tap the transform tool, flip ward to go and
click horizontal, tap the selections tool
to deselect and tap it again to select Save
and Load Selection one, tap the transform tool, flipbard to go and
click horizontal. Now what we want to
do is to turn on the layout layer to see which of these hearts are the different
numbers in the layout. So I will tap and drag my
layout to the top here in the group so I can see the numbers shining
through the hearts. So then I can see that this
red one is number four, so I will tap the red layer, tap the red color of that
one and draw this heart. If you think that the
layout layer is in the way, you can just turn off
the visibility of that. I won't mind it for
now as I want to move through this quickly. Then you can see that the
number two is the light pink. It's up there, I would
tap the light pink, tap the light pink layer, and number two is supposed
to be light pink. So that's good. And then the next one, the number three is which one is three,
which one is four. The dark red is three. So dark red layer, dark red color,
and number three. I'll draw my dark red
heart on that one. Like that, and then we
only have the pink. So tap the pink layer, tap the pink color, and draw this arch. Maybe a little bit
smaller because that one was super big. Okay. So now we're finished with that. And let's just turn
off the visibility of the sketch layer and on the layout layer and
see how this looks. So for me, this looks good. I will try it out when I've created the texture
in the next lesson. So let's just move on
to the next lesson, then we can try out the
pattern and see if we want to change some details, make some adjustments to replacement and
things like that.
9. Hero Pattern - Add Details & Texture: So now we will add some
texture and details. First, let's just
add some texture. So I will tap at the top of the red layer here and tap
the plus to add a new layer, and I will just
rename this texture. And we will use a
gray color over here, maybe somewhere around there in grayness to try things out. And then I want to use one
of the textured brushes. I will try this
grungy background, and as large brush as you can, 100% in brush size, and then I will just swipe over my pattern so that I
get this gray texture. Then I will tap the N on
the layer and tap Caliburn. So now we have some
nice texture here. If you want to go
lighter in the texture, let's zoom in a little bit. You can tap the CB and just
drag down the opacity. Or you can tap the layer, tap Alphalok and go up
or down in gray here. So let's go down to darker gray, tap fill layer so that
doesn't look good at all. And we can go for lighter
gray, tap fill layer. So that will bring you a
little bit of lighter texture. So for me, I really
love this texture, and I'm happy with
how that looks. So now let's add some
texture in the background, and then we will
use some stripes. I will tap the background layer, tap the plus to add a new layer. Just rename this to stripes
so I know what that is. And I will use the
beige light pink color here next to the cream white. And then I will use the
thin stripes brush, and you can go for
a maximum size, and I will just move this brush all around my canvas so that I feel every
space of my canvas. If you feel that it's
hard to see when you have the hearts here, you can just turn off the visibility of all
of the hearts and see that you filled out
your whole canvas with this striped brush. So now we've done that, I will
turn on the hearts again. And we want to flip the pan
around to make sure that every part of the texture and the stripes layer are
repeated in a good way. So I will tap the group and I will tap the selection tool. And first, I just want
to flip the top and the bottom so to see that
the stripes are matching up, so I will tap Save and load, selection four, tap the
transform tool, flip vertical. Then I will tap the
selections tool to deselect, tap it again to select,
save a load selection. Three, tap the transform
tool, flip vertical, tap the selection tool again, save a load, selection two, tap the transform tool, flip vertical, tap the
selection tool to deselect, tap it again to select
selection one and save a load and flip vertical
with the transform tool. So now we can turn
off the visibility of our heart and we can just see how our stripes are repeated. I will tap into
my stripes layer. Make sure that I have the
same color selected there. And here we can go for a brush, any type of brush, actually, that you can use
to fill this in. It's a little bit
textured in the side, so you can see that this
stripe is pretty good, but here we need to
fix a little bit. So I'll just go over
all of the stripes and let me see
what brush to use. Let's try to use the taper
texture and see how that looks with a really
small brush size. So that will probably work. And I will just fill in here
where you can see the edge. If you feel that it's too much, though that when
you're filling in, the line will be
too thick there. I don't think that that mattered there, but let's just say here. Then I will erase with the monoline brush
from the power pack, and I can just I have
around 10% in brush size, and I can just erase a
little bit of this line, zoom out, and redraw. I don't need to raise that much. And try to redraw it. Let's try to use
the taper texture, and a little bit larger and brush size.
Let's save the 2%. I can go for 6% and just try
to fill it in like this. So that you can see
where the line edge are. Okay, so that looks good. I will go in with the smaller
brush on these places, just fill out the
harsh edge there. And on this one, I will just erase
and use the 6% in brush size and fill
that in like that, the same with this one,
the same with that one. So I'm just wanting to make
it seamless here filling it in where the sharp edges are. That looks good. Erasing
a little bit here. There is just a
little bit like that. And on this one,
maybe we can go for the smaller over here. That's good. The smaller
one over there and raising using 6% in brush size. So you can see that
I'm just going through this as
quickly as I can, just to make sure that you can see where the lines meet up. Like that. And then here. And that one is good. This one is in need of a longer line and
6% in brush size. Erasing. Do we have some more? Yeah, we have quite a few more. So where is the line?
There is the line. So this is a little
detailed work, as you see, but once you've done it, it's gonna look great. What else? This one. And here we have a little bit there and a little bit there. And a little bit here. Okay, now we're finished with the stripes background and
it's repeated seamlessly. Now we can turn on the rest, not the sketch layer,
but the heart layers. And we have the texture here. And we can see if we have
any sharp lines over here in the texture on
the heart, but we don't. And I don't think that
we will have it in the edges of the
left or right side, either, but I will just flip it around so that we know for sure. So I will tap the group,
tap the selection two, save and load, selection four, tap the transform
to, flip horizontal. Tap this lexion two to deselect, tap it again to select, Save and load selection three, tap the transform tool,
and flip horizontal. Tap this selection tool
again to select and tap it. Save and load, selection two, tap the transform,
flip horizontal, tap this selection tool to deselect and tap
it again, select, save and load, selection one, tap the transform
to flip horizontal. What we want to do now is just
to zoom in in the center, see if we have a sharp lines. We have a little line here, so I will go to
the texture layer and raise with the same brush. So the grangy background
erase with a smaller brush, and I will just
erase a little bit here over the sharp line so that I can see
it in that heart. And in the same for this one. You can also draw
in a little bit, so you can go if
we tap the there, we can go for gray color. And on the texture layer
with the Grange background, you can go in and just add
a little bit of texture, not with 100%, but like that. And the same turn off Alpha
Look when you do this, add a little bit and
add a little bit. Okay, so now we have added details and texture
to our pattern
10. Hero Pattern - Test the Pattern: It's time to test our pattern
to see how it's repeated. I will swipe down with three
fingers, tap, copy all, tap at the top of
my layers panel, swipe down, tap paste, tap the three linter dots, split view Safari, and here I will tap and drag
my flattened image into my pattern tester, which is linked to in this
class, it's a free tool, and then I will just zoom in and out to see how the
pattern is repeated. I think that it looks great. So I'm happy with that. Then I will move back into Procreate. And let's just say that we
want to change something. So I will just take this heart, for example, and just twist
it around a little bit. Then I would take that layer, take the selection tool. Drag around with
the selection tool, tap the gray dot to close that, tap the transform tool, and here I could just Oops. I have the flattened
image there. So I would do it again.
Tap the selection tool, move around the selection. And on that layer, I
could just move around this heart until it's in a
position that I want it to be. So that is how you would
make some changes. If your heart that
you want to make changes in aren't
at the center here, but are cut off, you need to flip the
pattern around again. To make sure that the changes that you want to make that heart is free and not cut
off by the edges. Okay, so that looks good. I will actually go into
the red layer because I can see that I want to move
this heart a little bit. So I can just move it upwards, twist it around a little bit. You know, I can just
play around and see how you want your
hearts to be repeated to make it a good
flow in the pattern. This looked really
good, actually. I think I will keep it at
this direction. I like that. Okay. So that is how you
test your pattern in Safari, and then I will actually swipe down with three fingers again
because I move that hard, tap, copy all, and swipe down with three
fingers tap paste. I will delete the first one, and then I will duplicate
until I have five copies. I will tap the transform tool, tap in the top left corner node, make sure that you
have the chain symbol tapped in and type in 1,500. Then I will tap the next layer, tap the transform tool, type in 1,500 on the top, right coronde, tap
the next layer. Tap the transform tool and tap the bottom left corner node, type in 1,500, tap
the next layer, tap the transform tool and bottom right corner
node, and 1,500. Then I will swipe these layers
together to merge them. And here we have our
finished pattern. I really like how this looks, and you have your
repeated pattern here, and you have your parentile. So to sharing class, I would suggest that you
share your repeated patterns. I will keep that
on the visibility. So now it's time to go
to create our secondary
11. Secondary Pattern - Sketching: Let's create our secondary
pattern. It's this one. I will tap into the
patent template, but I need to
duplicate it first, so I will tap select
patent template and duplicate and then tap
into the patent template. I will clear this first layer. And if you need to, you can tap Canvas reference and
bring out the reference. I don't think I did
that with the hearts. It's not necessary if you
know what you want to draw, but if you would want to have it as is ratio, you
can have that there. I don't think that we need
it for this one, though. Okay, so for this pattern, it's a bit simpler pattern, and I'm thinking that we will first create
the background. So we'll rename
this to background. And then I will tap and drag my color panel over
here and choose. Let's just choose the
darker of the pink, tap the background
and tap failure. Then I will tap the plus, and here I want to
sketch out my letters. I will do this by turning
on the drawing guide. I will tap Canvas,
drawing guide, edit drawing guide,
with a two degrade. I want to bring
it up to maximum. And this is just to
get four squares here. You could also, for example, bring it down to what
will it be 1005750. And that will give you like
four squares in one square. If you think that that's easier when you're drawing
your letters. With layer two, I will go for let's go for the
darker red color. We can first actually sketch. So let's just rename this
to sketch the layer, and I will just sketch I sketch with black and sketch
with the perfect pencil, and I will just
write an X and an O. So let me just I want
this bubbly shapes. Maybe something like that. Then I can swipe right on
that layer to duplicate, tap the transform
to fft horizontal. And here I can see if I'm
happy with how it looks. I think it's a little bit thick. So we'll actually just delete that layer and tap
the sketch layer. We can pull this
little orange square, which will make your
selection around this direction instead
of this direction. So just move it around,
and then I tap free form. When I have free form selected, I can just go in and make
it a little bit thinner. And then tap the transform tool, place it somewhere
here in the center, and then duplicate it again, tap the transform tool
and flip or something. So now I have an X. I'm pretty
happy with how that looks. And now I need an O. So let me just merge these
two layers together, tap the layer, tap down. So this is actually
let's just rename it to sketch X and then
tap add a new layer. And sketch O. No, I could actually do
it on the same layer. Let's just do it
on the same layer. Sketch. And here I want an O. About the same size as
that one with, like, a small smaller
hole at the center. So almost like it's the balloon, you know, from the
or inspiration. It's almost like a balloon, so it's a little
bit more bubbly. I like that look. So then
I have my X and my O. You could select around one of the letters and tap
the transform tool. And if you have free
form, you could go in and make it bigger in
any way you want to, maybe like that, and I can
do that with the X as well. So I can select around X, tap the transform tool and
make it a little bit wider. Then I can move around here and see are they around
the same size? Yeah, they probably are. So that is good, maybe a little bit
more like that. Okay, so I think that
this looks good, and then I would have
to transform tool. So now I have the
sketch for the letters, and it's time to move on to
draw the actual letters.
12. Secondary pattern - Make the Pattern: We made a sketch, and
let's draw our letters. I will tap my color palette here so that I have my
pre made color palette. And I will drag down the
opacity of the sketch. You can tap, drag
down the opacity. If you want to, you can
keep the guidelines there, and then I will tap the
plaster at a new layer, and I will rename this two
gs because I would draw one letter on each layer so that I easily can
move them around. And I will use my
dark red color. And let's go for
the dry acrylic. And let's draw this X. Now you can choose if you
want to draw just one and then duplicate it or if you want to be a little bit
more hand drawn, feel and draw just round it. I would draw one of these
and duplicate it, I think. I'm filling it in.
You can adjust the details maybe make it a little bit more even in the edges if you want to Okay, I'm starting to be
happy with this one. And now I will just
duplicate this. I will swipe the
right to duplicate, tap the transform tool, and tap flip horizontal. And there I have my X, and I'm super happy
with that one. I will tap the top
and tap merge down. Then I will tap the plus, and I will rename this to Oh. And with the same color
and with the same brush, I can draw this Oh Oops. Here, I want to show you a trick if you want to do
it symmetrical, you can tap the Transform
tool, Edit ngrade symmetry, and I have my
symmetry on vertical, but I need to move
it to the center here of my what's it called? Oh, like that, maybe. Then tap done. And now it
says assisted on that layer. Something happened
there, tap and drag. Oops, I accidentally
draw something. So now I have O and assisted, and all I need to do
now is to draw on one side and it will be
repeated on the other side. So then you have a
more symmetrical O. Which might look nice, then you can fill it in. Okay, so I'm happy with that. I can turn off the assisted
drawing on that layer. It's a tap layer, turn
off the assisted drawing. And then for the guidelines, I might want to bring
back my two d grid, and I have it on seven and
50 pixels and tap done. Now I don't need
my sketch anymore, so I'll turn off
my sketch layer. And here I have my letters. If you want to move in and
do some details like this, bottom was a little
bit flat here, so just make it a
little bit more round. Then you have it like. So now we will
create the repeat. So I will do this by
really simple technique. I will swipe right
on both of these, tap group, and I will swipe right on the group
and tap duplicate. And then I will tap snapping
and magnetics and bring these ones down here like that. And you can actually try
to flip it horizontal. If you feel that
this looks good. For me, this looks
good. It looks like the same letter. You
can do it like that. Or if it doesn't work for you, then you can move the X
there and move the O there. But for me, I think it worked well with
just flipping it horizontal. So then I have XO O X. These ones on the bottom, I want in the same colors. I will merge those down and I will merge the
top ones down as well. And I don't need
these groups now, so I can just move those to one group or out of the group and then
delete that group. The first one is now we can just rename to second
row and first row. And drag that layer down. The second row, now
I'm out of the groups, let's just move them
out of the group. On the second row, I will tap apalu and tap the white color and tap
the layer tap fi layer. Now I have X ox. I'm
happy with that. I think the placement
is good on the letters. We will see that when we try
the pattern out later on. But for now, I will
add the texture. Let's move on to
the next lesson.
13. Secondary Pattern - Add Texture: Oh, let's add the texture. I will shut down my color panel, and I will actually turn
off the drawing guide. And then I want to add some
texture just on the letters. I will tap the top here, tap the plaster,
add a new layer, and rename to texture. And I will use the bottom
color, the background color. And let's try to use square
and texture for this. And increase the
size a little bit, choose the background color. So if I want to change color
of this panel later on, I will just change the color
of the texture as well. Okay, so now we have
the square texture, and I will just I have
around 50% in brush size. Now we'll just move over with a soft pressure to add this crusty texture
on the letters. Okay, so this looks super cute. I'm happy with how this looks, and I've added the texture here. And I am happy with this result.
14. Secondary Pattern - Test the Pattern: Now it's time to try
out our pattern. I will swipe down
with three fingers, tap, copy all, swipe
down with three fingers, tap paste, tap the
three little dots, split view, tap Safari. And here I will tap my
layers panel and tap and drag in my image to
the patent tester. Then I will swipe
down and swipe up, and I can see that I'm super happy with the result
of this pattern. It's balanced in a good way. I like the texture, and I just
like the simplicity of it. So if you want to try
it out in Procreate, I will swipe the
right to duplicate the flatten image so
that I have five copies, and then I will tap the
transform tool on the top layer, tap the top left corner node, make sure you have
the chain symbol tapped in and type in 1,500. Then I will tap the next layer, tap in the top
right corner node, and type in 1,500. Then I would tap
in the next layer, tap in the bottom
right cornonde, type in 1,500, tap
the next layer, tap in the bottom right
cornone and type in 1,500. And then I will swipe these
together to merge them. So here you have your
repeated pattern, and here you have your pentile. I will keep my repeated pattern here because when you share
your patterns in class, I suggest that you share
your repeat the patterns. So let's move on to the blender.
15. Blender Pattern - Make the Pattern: Let's move on to making
the blender pattern, and that is this dots pattern. Oops, here, which
is super simple. So what we will do is just select the pattern
template and duplicate it. This is the last pattern that we're creating in this class, but you might as well save your palm template as an original so that you
can reuse it later on. Let me just first
rename this to hearts, this to oops, XO. XO XO, and this to dots. Okay, so tap into the
dots pan template, swipe to the right on the
first layer to clear it. And here I will just
rename this to background. So this pattern
is pretty simple. We will just start to create
the pattern right away. I will tap and drag my color
palette to my camas here, tap the dark red, tap the background
layer, fill layer, and then I will tap the
plaster a new layer, and I will rename this to dots. Now let's just use the
dry acrylic brush again. And with a pink color, we can go for this pink. I will just add some dots. And here, it would
just be random. I would just draw the dots, and then we might
need to move them. Later on if they aren't
repeated in a nice way, but I will try to just
place them balanced, but not in a row so that the pattern gets a little bit more
like dynamic feel. I want a little bit
larger dots, I think. I won't mind if they're not perfectly round because I want this little more handrawn look. Okay, so now we created that and we will flip
the pattern around. And see how it looks. Swipe the right on
both of those layers, tap group, tap the group, tap the selection two,
Save load selection four, tap to transform to, flip
vertical, and flip horizontal. Tap the selection tool
again to deselect, tap it again to select, Save and load selection three, tap the transform too, flip vertical, and flip horizontal. Tap the selection
tool again to select Save and load selection
two, tap the transform to, flip vertical, and
flip horizontal, tap the selection
two to deselect, and tap it again to select
Save and load selection one. Tap to transform to, flip
vertical, flip horizontal. Here we can instantly
see that we might need to move around some dots. So let's just tap the dot layer, and I will tap the
selection tool, and I would definitely like
to move around this one. So now I'm just turning off
snapping and magnetics. I can move them free
hand and move them around so that they look a
little bit more balanced, not too close to each other, like this one to that one
or this one to that one. Make sure that when you
move around your objects, you have bicubic set in the
interpolation to lose as little resolution as possible when you move around
these objects in Procrit. So this is just a
matter of looking at your pattern and seeing
how it will be balanced. Maybe bring that one
up, that one down. That one down there, and I might want to draw in one dot or two. Like that. I could
make them a little bit bigger if I want to Oops. Okay, so this might look good, and it's time to
test our pattern.
16. Blender Pattern - Test the Pattern: Let's test the pattern. I will swipe down
with three fingers. I'll just shut down
the color panel, swipe down with three fingers, tap copy all, swipe down
with three fingers, tap paste, tap the
three letter dots, split view, tap Safari, and then I will tap
and drag my image to my patentesor on my
website and swipe away. I think that this
looks really good. We only have one issue, and that's this space
that don't have a dot. So we need to figure
out where that is. I will move back to Procreate. I want to check. It has the smallest
little dot to the left. So then we can see the smallest
little dot to the left. So the empty space is probably
somewhere around there. So what I will do right away is just to flip the
pattern around again, and I will turn off the visibility of
the flattened image, delete that, and then
I will tap the group, tap the selection
tool, save and load. I want to flip the sides in, so I will tap the
selection four, tap the transform
tool, flip horizontal, tap the selection tool
to deselect and tap it again to select
selection number three, and tap the transform
tool, flip horizontal. Tap it again to the select
and tap the selection tool again and selection number two, tap the transform
and flip horizontal, then tap the
selection tool again, selection number one
and flip horizontal. I think that this might be where the empty spaces.
Let's just try that out. I will add a dot over here and let's see if
that made it work. Swipe down with
three fingers, tap, copy all, swipe down with
three fingers, tap paste, tap the three little
dots, split view, Safari, tap and drag your
image to the pattern tester. Swipe away procreate
and drag up and down. Yeah, that seems to
have solve the problem. So now we will try the
pattern out in Procreate. I will swipe to the right
and duplicate this, flatten image so that
they have five copies. Then I will tap the
transform tool, tap in the top left corner
node, type in 1,500. Then I will tap the next layer, tap in the top right corner
node, type in 1,500. Then I will tap the next layer, tap in the bottom
left corner node, type in 1,500 and
tap the next layer. Tap in the bottom right corner
node and type in 1,500. And I will swipe away or swipe them together
to merge them. And I will select
both those layers and drag them above the group. And here I have my
repeat the pattern, and here I have my parentile. So now we're finished
with all of the patterns, and it's time to try out
how to recolor them.
17. Recoloring: Okay, so it's time to
recolor our patterns. Let's just first start
with this blender pattern. So first, I will turn off the visibility of the
flattened images, and then we can just try
out to change the colors. If you want to change the colors of the dots, you tap the layer, tap Apalok and we could
change the colors to, like, a beige, peach, tap the
layer again, fill layer. And then if you
want to change the color of the background, let's just recolor
that to cream white, tap the background
and fill layer. So you can tap the dots again, and I will tap the pink
and tap fill layer. Okay, so you can
decide if you want to keep the let's just try out the little
pinkish color there. Okay, so that looks
good, I think, like the darker one of the cream white there or the very light
pink, and then the pink. So for me, I actually like
that more than this, I think. So I will keep that and I can just swipe down with
three fingers tap, copy all. Swipe down with three
fingers, tap paste, just to repeat this so that
I can share it in class. Swipe the right to
duplicate that layer, tap the transform tool, tap in the top left corner node, type in 1,500, tap
the next layer, tap the transform tool, tap the bottom right
corner node and 1,500. Tap the next layer, tap
the transform tool, tap the bottom
left, corner node, and typo 1,500 and the next
layer and the transform tool and tap right corner node and typo 1,500 and merge
these together. So now we can see here we
have the pattern repeated with the red background and with the white background or the
green white background. I really like this,
so I will keep that. If you would want to change the colors of something
more complex, let's move into
the heart pattern. And you could
recolor the hearts, turn off the visibility
of the repeated images. And that way, you will just tap Apalc let's just make them
blue, tap fill layer, tapops, not fill layer, tap apalc and just make them
different shades of blue. Tap fill layer, tap
apalc on the next one. Tap fill layer and tap
alphaok and tap fill layer. If you want to change the
colors of the stripes, you tap that layer, tap phalk. Maybe you want some kind
of blue stripes here then. Tap fill layer. And if you want to change
the color of the background, you tap the background, and let's just go for a Bright, blue, and tap and drag
or tap fill there. So now I changed the colors
of the whole pattern. It's super simple like that. I want to keep mine
red and pink, though, so I will just tap do until I'm happy and back with my colors. So that is how you recolor
these patterns in Procreate.
18. Export the Files: Now we will export the files. From here, it's super
simple from your gallery. You can just select the
patterns if they are repeated or if you want to I can see now that I don't have
the pattern repeated there. I have the pattern repeated now, so I can select this and tap Share JPEG and save it to my cameraol so that
you can share it in class. If you want to use your pen tile for a product
for a project or whatever, you turn off the visibility of the repeated pattern
when you're in the file, tap the actions
panel, share JPEG. And save your pattern to your camoll or wherever
you want to save it. So that is how simple it is to export your files and
share your pattern.
19. BONUS - Have a Look at Using Procreate Mockups: So here's a little bonus lesson. I wanted to show you my
appropriate mockups. This is included if
you watch the class in my membership in
the all access plan, my membership pattern Rebos, but I just wanted to show you these mockups because I
think they're super cute. So in this class, in my membership, there are five Valentine's Day
inspired mockups. We have a gift. We have a champagne bottle. We have, like, a greeting card, and three chocolate bars
and a candle with a label. I really love these
mockups and I wanted to show you
how to use them. So let's just tap in
to the Valentine's, the chocolate bar mockup. And here you have some layers. You don't need to touch any of the layers that have a
little chain symbol there, but you can change the
patterns on the other ones. So let me just turn off the
visibility of the patterns, and let's just add the
patterns that we have created. So I'll tap the mask layer, tap the actions panel, add insert a photo, and then I will add
the dots there. And when you're in
this, position, you can move it
around and make it larger and smaller and place
it on that chocolate bar. Then I will tap the
next chocolate bar two, tapped actions panel,
insert a photo, and I will just
insert my XOXO print, maybe bigger, maybe
smaller, move it around. That looks great. And then
the chocolate bar one, taped actions panel, insert a photo and add my
heart's pattern. And you can zoom in and out on the pattern and move
it around the mockup. So this is such a fun way to check out your mini
pattern collections, to share your work
on social media, or your website, or
even to clients. And I really love using
procreate mockups. So this was just a little
bonus lesson to show you the mockups and to let you know that if you're
interested in using them, subscribe to the
All Access plan in my Pattern Ribos
membership where these mockups is
included in this class, which you can watch in my membership in the All
Access plan as well. So that was all that I wanted
to say about these mockups.
20. Final Thoughts: And that's all for this class. If you only get one
thing out of this class, I hope it is that
it doesn't need to be complicated to make
a pattern collection. In this class, we're
creating a mini collection, but if you want to
take it further, you can add more patterns to make it into a
larger collection, and you can use this collection
for any type of purposes. There's no limit to
what you can create, and you already
done the groundwork by finding inspiration, choosing a theme, and creating
this mini collection. If you enjoy this class, I
would also recommend checking out my other mini pattern
collection classes. Which are about the Halloween theme mini
pattern collection and a Christmas theme
mini pattern collection. And if you're eager to dive even deeper into pattern design, be sure to check out my
membership Pattern Rebels. In Pattern Rebels, you will get access to monthly classes, design resources like
Procreate brushes, color palettes,
procreate mockups, and Paal Lea templates. Plus, we have monthly design challenges,
feedback sessions, and Q&A opportunities
where you can ask me anything about design or
running a creative business. You can learn more at
pattern rebels.com. So with all of this said, thank
you so much for watching. If you enjoy this class,
