About This Class

Hi. I’m Elaine Vitikainen. I’m an illustrator and an entrepreneur from Helsinki. I love to travel. Travelling gives me the much needed break from my everyday life and I love experiencing new things and tasting new food.

I also love creating Travel Journals. Journaling about my travels has always been an enjoyable process that allows me to be at the present moment while preserving that moment at the same time. It’s always fun to look back through my travel journals.

As much as I love the process of journaling on paper, I also love to journal on my iPad on Procreate. So in this class, we will be creating a Travel Journal page on an iPad on Procreate. We would need an iPad, an Apple Pen or any stylus that you have and the Procreate. Journaling on Procreate is so easy and fun while we put together the different elements of our travels. The nice thing about journaling on an iPad is that it is easy to correct mistakes and to try different designs and placements of items. This Travel Journal page can be shared on social media, it can be printed out and like me, you can also make more pages and have it printed as a journal book. Journaling is such a wonderful way to keep our travel memories.

Hi! I'm Elaine Vitikainen. I'm an illustrator and an entrepreneur from Helsinki. While others may say that they have been drawing since the first time they held a pen (which I think we all did), I can honestly say I learned to draw later in life. It was in 2019 that I established myself as an entrepreneur and made visualisation and illustrating as my main work. I've conducted creative facilitation that incorporates the practical and effective use of visuals. With my Masters degree in Communication, I've supported organisations' communication processes by placing organisational communication into visual context. I've illustrated for the Non-Profit organisations and for the development filed. I've also conducted Visualisation workshops to those who desire to be more visua... See full profile

1. Introduction: Hi. I'm Elaine Vitikainen. I'm an illustrator and an entrepreneur from Helsinki. I love to travel. Traveling gives me the much needed break from my everyday life, and I love experiencing new things and tasting new food. I also love creating travel journals. Journaling about my travel has always been an enjoyable process that allows me to be at the present moment while preserving that moment at the same time. It's always fun to look back through my travel journals. As much as I love the process of journaling on paper, I also love to journal on my iPad on Procreate. So in this class, we'll be creating a travel journal page on an iPad on Procreate. Journaling on Procreate is so easy and fun while we put together the different elements of our travels. The nice thing about journaling on an iPad is that it is easy to correct mistakes and to try different designs and placements of items. This travel journal pages can be shared on social media. It can be printed out and like me, you can also make more pages and have it printed as a journal book. Journaling is such a wonderful way to keep our travel memories. I can't wait to see you in class. 2. Class Project: For the class project, we will be creating a travel journal page on an iPad on Procreate. We will journal any travel that we've experienced. It could be a visit to the next city from where we live or somewhere far. Any travel is worth journaling. We would need an iPad, an Apple pen, or any stylus that you have and Procreate. This travel journal page can be shared on social media. It can be printed out and you can also make more pages and have it printed as a journal book. This is a great way to keep your travel memories and also to share with others. So let's start. 3. Example of a Travel Journal: In this lesson, I will go through my travel journals that I've created on my iPad on Procreate and printed into a small book. I have this journal book printed on an A6 where I combined my different travel pages from 2021-2022. If you want to do something like this, I suggest that you look for a print-on-demand site where you can have your travel journal printed. They will have templates where you can upload your journal pages for printing. The important thing is to know the exact size of the book that you want printed and what is available on the site so that you can start working on Procreate using the right canvas for your journal. When you have decided your canvas size, then it's time to think about the design of your journal and the colour palette. This one is from my trip in South Korea. I was there for 14 days and I journaled every day. In this journal, I have included Cherry blossom and the pink colours as we were there during the Cherry blossom season. I want to have consistency and coherence in my journal design while using a limited colour palette. I drew this Cherry blossom and made the lettering for the cover. I also put the date of the travel. And for this journal I use my own fonts. I also like to include my drawings and put photos taken during the trip on Polaroid frames and adding washi tape. I also drew the sun to represent a sunny day and the cloud for cloudy days. And I love putting text in boxes. Then I wrote the highlight of the day and how I feel about it. I also added these pages to stick photos taken at the photo booths. I also have a saving spot page with an envelope to put more money for the next travel. So there are many ways to design your journal. But there is no one way to journal. So express yourself and your own style and create a journal that you're happy about. 4. Let's Create: In this lesson, we will be creating a simple journal page on Procreate. So let's open Procreate. Hit the plus sign, and let's create our canvas. Since I'll be creating more pages for my travel journal, I will follow the size to create an A4 book. You can use what fits for you or a square canvas. For example, a 15x15 " canvas is suitable to share on Instagram. For today, I'll be journaling my trip to Nikko in Japan. First, I will upload some photos that I will include in my page. I also want to think of my colour palette and the general design of my page. Since this trip was in October, I want to have the Autumn colours. I've also prepared a brush set with some Japanese motifs that I will use for this page. First, I will add a layer and fill it with light yellow. I will choose white to add the Decimals Texture on another layer. This brush is available on the Procreate brush library under Texture. Remember not to lift your pen so that you will have a uniform texture. I like to include the date, a title, and the place in my travel journal. You can choose from the many fonts available. I like to vary the texts and also the size to make it more interesting. I will place the photos on polaroid frames. You can download these frames from the class resources section. Remember to duplicate the frames for future use. I also like to cut some photos by using the Selection tool, Freehand, and just going over with the pen. Swipe three fingers, then cut and paste. It's good to imagine the actual size of the page so that you can estimate the right size for your items. I will then label the photos. The nice thing about journaling on an iPad is that it is easy to correct mistakes and to try different designs and the placements of items. You can really be creative and you can rearrange to however you like until you're happy with your travel page. Lastly, I will write about the highlight of this trip instead of all the details. But this depends on you, on what you want to remember about the trip. I'll also add some stamps to fill the empty spaces. These brushes were made by Attki on Gumroad. Save your travel journal as a JPEG. You can upload this to the printing site. You can print it yourself or share on social media. You can decide what you want to do with it. But most importantly, you were able to journal your travel and preserve your travel memories. 5. Thank You: Thank you for joining me in this class. I hope you enjoyed creating your own travel journal page to preserve your travel memories. Please don't forget to share your travel journal page in the project gallery section. I really can't wait to see what you've created and if you're posting your project on Instagram, please tag me. Also leave a class review. I would really appreciate it. Bye for now and see you again soon.
