1. Introduction & What You’ll Learn: These brushes are perfect for your digital embroidery. They can add a hand-crafted touch to your artworks and motifs. Hello everyone. My name is Maria. I'm an illustrator and pattern designer based in Singapore. And in this class I'm going to show you how you can eat a fresh start by illustrating the shape we need to create this brush. I will guide you step-by-step on all the settings we need to create this stitch brush. Once we are done creating this brush will be illustrating project off of floral motif using these brushes. And I will be showing you methods on how you can treat allergies, motives. I even have a few examples of artworks and motifs that can help you decide on your project and also ideas on how you can use these brushes in your own style. By the end of this class, you will have a lot of tips and tricks on how to create your own custom stitch brushes and how to illustrate digitally embroidered motives and artworks. Thank you for taking this class with me. 2. Dual Colour Brush Explaination: Let's see how a dual Colour Brush works. I'll tap on my Brush Library. These are the two brushes we'll be creating in this class today. I'll tap on one of these Brushes. Here on the left top corner. You can see to brushes instead of one. When you create a Dual Brush, you combine two Brush together. Now let's see how we can choose our colors for these brushes. I'll tap on the Color panel. Here on the right corner, you can see two tiny boxes. Now to select your colors, just tap on one of these boxes and tap on the color you need. Again on the other box and select your second color. Now, whichever color is showing that the dog in this tiny circle becomes your primary color. So before you leave your panel, make sure your primary is selected and showing in the silicon. Now let's see how our brush looks like with these colors. Also, these are pressure sensitive brushes. The shape of your strong depends on the pressure you apply on your Apple pencil. Let's try out another color combination. I'll try with the light pink and the dark pink. Tap on this box. Tap your second color. Make sure your primary is showing on the top here. And that's how the brush looks like. Now, let's see how it looks like when the colors are inverted. I'll tap on the dark color and make that as my primary. Now these results depends a lot on how you creating your brushes, the shape and the shading you're using on your initial shape. Now, let's move on to creating our brush in my next lesson. 3. Creating Stitch Brush 1: Let's create a Dual Colour Stitch Brush. If you're new to Procreate. This is how the gallery looks like when you open the app. These are all my artworks back together. Now, our first step is to create a new canvas. For that, I'll tap on this plus sign. Again, on this tiny plus sign. For a good-quality Brush, it is always better to create on a bigger Canvas. My canvas size is 3,000 by 3,000 pixel, width 300 DPI and tap create. Our next step is to select our color. For that, I'll go to the Color panel. I'll select a black color. Make sure it's a true black. It should be completely black. Next, we'll select the brush to draw the shape. We need to create our Embroidery Brush. For that, we'll go to the brush library. Under calligraphy, you'll find this Brush calmodulin. I'll tap on mono line. Now, the stroke for this brush is too thin for what we need. Even if you go to the maximum size, it is still too thin. So I'll duplicate this brush and we'll adjust the size. Tap on this duplicate brush and will increase the maximum size. For that. I'll tap on properties. Here. I will increase the percentage of the maximum size to around for 50 per cent. But I think you can even go with 300. You can even try it on the canvas. And if you're not happy, you can come back and increase the percent again and tap down. You can keep your brush size around 18%. And we can start drawing these uneven vertical lines. These are basically some shapes and lines that we're trying to create that should look like stitches. Right now, I'll be drawing four lines, but this can also be done with 12 or even more than four lines. Once you know the basic technique of creating this brush, you can experiment a lot with this Brushes. Once you're done with the shape, we have to make sure this is exactly in the center of the canvas. For that, we'll select the shape, makes sure your uniform is selected. The snapping your magnetics and snapping should be on. The distance is around 21. Now with your fingertip or with your Apple pencil tip, you have to move this shape until you see these golden lines vertically and horizontally, which indicates that the shape is exactly in the center of the canvas. We're done with our primary shape here. Let's move on to our secondary shape. For that, I'll go to layers and duplicate our first layer. Next, we'll add some details and highlights to this layer. For that, we'll add a new layer and add clipping mask to this layer. Tap on this layer, tap clipping mask. Next we'll go to the Brush Library. Here under textures, you'll find this default brush with diagonal lines and you go down. There's this brush called diagonal. We will be using this brush to add texture to our brush. Next I'll go to the Color panel. Select white color. Once you select your white Colour, keep your brush size as max. I'll just paint with this brush on the lines. Because this is on a clipping mask layer, it will not go outside our lines. So your layers should look like this. The lines, the diagonal line should be on a new layer, on the clipping mask layer. Make sure that layer is selected. And I'll tap on this tiny arrow for the selection and make sure you're on your uniform. I want the gaps between these lines to be more wider. So I am extending and expanding this layer. Just hold this tiny node and pull from one corner. We're done with our texture here. We'll be moving on to the highlights. For that. I will add a new layer and we'll add clipping mask for that tap on the layer. Tap clipping mask. Go to the Brush Library. Here, under airbrushing. We select the first Brush here. That's the soft brush. Make sure your white color is selected. And we'll add these soft highlights. So we have this vertical lines on our Canvas, but these highlights has to be horizontal I'm going to spread these lines evenly. But you can experiment a lot with these highlights. You can have them heavier in the center or at the bottom. Once this brushes ready, you will get this idea on how the brush can look with a particular highlight. Next, we'll create a folder in our Brush Library. For these brushes, you can find a tiny plus sign at the top of all the brush folders here. Tap on this plus sign and you can create a new folder. I'll rename this folder as Embroidery Brushes. Now, our first step is to copy the canvas. Before we copy, we need our primary brush. First. I'll hide all the other layers and keep our primary shape on the canvas. Now to copy the canvas, we'll go to action, Add and tap on Copy Canvas. This will copy the shape we have on our Canvas. Tap on the Brush Library. To create a new brush, we have to tap on this tiny plus sign. This will open all the settings we need to create a new brush. We'll start with a stroke. But first, for Dual Brush, It's always better to type in your percentage instead of sliding. Because both the brush needs to have exact same percentage. For now we can keep as 23 per cent. But once the brushes ready, we can change and experiment on this to next under stabilization, the streamline, I'll type in the amount as 90 per cent. Setting will help you have a better control on your stroke. You can even come back and change this once you brushes ready. Next under stabilization, I'll keep the amount as 50 per cent. Next, under Depot will slide this tiny little blue dot on the right. I'll slide it in. Type in the size to 50 per cent. The pressure should be none. And type in the dip as 60 per cent. Now let's move on to the shape. Tap on Shape, tap on, Edit. In both and paste. This will paste the shape be copied from our Canvas. Data two-finger on this image. This will invert the image. Once your image looks like this, tap Done. Next, type in the scatter as 3%, rotation as max, the count as two, and the count to two as 1%. Moved down. Here, the pressure roundness type in 30%. Delt roundness will be max. Now under rendering, the rendering mode will be uniform glaze. Now under Color Dynamics, healed and scroll down. We'll start with the color pressure first. Here the saturation will be 50 per cent. The brightness will be max, and the secondary color will be max2, just about the secondary color. We can tap on this tiny option calling max. When you tap on Macs, you can see this option called numeric and pressure. We'll tap on pressure cure. You can see a diagonal string. I'll hold this tiny node and make it horizontal. Next we'll move on to Colour tilt. Here the saturation will be max. Brightness will be minus hundred. Make sure you slide left. And secondary color will be max again. Next, under dynamics, the size will be max. Next, under Apple Pencil, the size will be max. Again. The opacity will be none. Next, under properties, this is very important step. The audience to screen will be switched off next weekend. Adjust the size of the Brush. I'll keep the maximum size as 200 per cent and the minimum as 1%. Now, she'll be done with our first part of the brush, dab done. Let's move on to the second part of the Brush. For that will duplicate our first brush swipe left Tap Duplicate. Now before we start with the second part, we need to copy our Canvas and we need the shape with our highlights and details. Unhide both are layers with the details. Now to copy the canvas, we'll go to action, Add and tap on Copy Canvas. Go to the Brush Library and tap on the duplicate brush. There will be very few settings that we need to change here. The first is under shape, tap on Shape, Edit, Import and paste, and tap Done. The next setting we need to change is under Color Dynamics. Tap on Color Dynamics. Go down. Here on the stroke color jitter. The secondary color will be max. Under Colour pressure, the saturation will be max, and the colored tilt will change everything to none. I'll move the saturation in the center. The brightness in the center to in the secondary color will be none. And tap Done. Now here we have to Brushes. Make sure the one with the highlights and details is at the door. Next, we need to select both the Brush. For that. I'll swipe left on the second brush. When you have both the brush selected, you can see this option called combined at the top. We'll tap on that option and that will combine our brushes. Next step on this brush. And we can rename this brush under About this brush. Go to About this brush. Show you can edit to your brush name. I'll keep mine as Stitch Brush one. Once you're done filling all your details here, tap done. We're done with our brush here. Let's see how it looks on the Canvas. We'll start by selecting our color. I'll go to the Color panel, tap on one of the boxes. I'll select the light color. The other box with the dark color. I'll tap on the light color, make sure my primary is showing on the circle. And that's how the brush looks like. Now you can create a lot of variation in the same Brush. For example, I made another brush with thinner lines. The basic shape to create this brush had thinner lines. So when you compare these brushes, There's very little difference. But now that you know how to create this brush, you can experiment a lot with the shape and the size. Even the highlights you add can have so many radiations. Let's try with the new color combination. I'll try with a light blue and a dark blue. Because this is a pressure based brush. The more pressure you apply, the wider this brush gets. This brush works best when the brush size is around 25 to 30%. Like for example, you can get this shape with the same brush. Let's move on to creating our second Brush. 4. Creating Stitch Brush 2: Now to create our second brush, I will be editing our first one. I will reverse some of the setting. So we'll start by duplicating our first brush, swipe left and tap Duplicate. Now I will tap on the first brush. This will open our settings. Now the first setting that we need to change is under taper, because we don't need any taper for this brush. I'll slide the tiny node and make my size and as none. Next under shape. Scroll down. Here, we don't need any pressure roundness. Next, under Apple pencil, we keep the size in the center that's zero per cent. Will repeat these settings for the second brush to tap on the second brush. Go to taper, make everything as none. Under shape. Again, we don't need any pressure roundness. Next, under Apple pencil, the size as zero per cent. Now under About this brush, you can edit the name of this brush here. I'll keep mine as stitch brush, tool and tap Done. Now let's see how this brush looks on the canvas. I'll go to my color panel, select our light and the dark color. Make sure my primary is selected before I leave the panel. This is how the brush looks like. Hold your pencil tip to create a perfect silicon. This is also a grid brush to create a patchwork effect. This can help you create these outline for the patches. Let's try out another color. I'll select a bright yellow. I'll increase my brush size. So we are done with creating both our embroidery brushes here. In my next lesson, we can create this beautiful floral illustration using these brushes. 5. Floral Illustration: If you have downloaded my floral sketch file from the resource section, when you open the Procreate app, you will be able to find this file on the top left here. Let's tap on this canvas and start our floral illustration. That are two layers on this file. When you go to layers, you will be able to see a sketch layer and an Embroidery Ring layer. This is a royalty-free image of a ring. And on the other layer is this floral sketch, more like a guideline? Now, let's start by adding a new layer. For that. I'll tap on this plus sign from the Brush Library. I'll select our first brush. Now under the Color panel, you'll find this color palette in the resource section. To now, I'll be selecting this light yellow and tap on the other box and select this dark yellow. You can even make your colors lighter or darker. I want my yellow to be a little darker. Tap on the light color and make sure it is showing on the small circle here that makes it your primary color. Now I can start with my first flower. Now to achieve your required shape can take time with these brushes. You will need practice to understand how these pressure based brushes work. The more pressure you apply, the wider the brush gets. We are done with our petals here. Let's start with the Center. For that. I will add a new layer, go to a Brush Library, select our second Brush. You can select any color of your choice. I'll be keeping it light pink, dark pink. Tap on the light color so it can show on the top. And I'll draw the circle in the center of the flower. When you draw this circle, hold your pencil tip and your fingertip on the screen. This will create a perfect circle. You can even make it smaller or bigger. Because this is on a new layer. If you feel this is not in the center, you can select this shape even adjusted to the center of the flower and deselect. Let's move on to the second floor. Let's start our second flower by adding a new layer. Add a new layer. And now because this flower needs to be at the back of our first flower, pull this layer at the bottom. There should be below our first flower layer. Next we can go to the Brush Library. Make sure our first brush is selected. Go to the Color panel. You can keep this any color of your choice. I'll be keeping it orange and dark red. I'll keep my orange a little lighter. Now, we're using the same brush, but with the help of the pressure. I'll try to create this drop like shape. We can have this different shapes or flower in the same design. So for this, you need to apply pressure where it starts with a little lighter, with a little heavier pressure on the tip. We're done with the petal here. Let's move on to the center of this flower. For that, we'll add a new layer. Make sure it is on the top of our second flower layer. I'll select a light green and a dark green for the center. Go to the Brush Library and select our second brush. And I'll draw the circle in the center of our second flower. Draw a circle. Hold your pencil tip and your fingertip on the screen. We're done with our center. I'll move this, I'll select this layer. And I'll move this in the center of this flower and deselect. We are done with our flowers here. Let's move on to the leaves. For that, I will need a new layer at the bottom. This has to be just about our sketch layer that is below all our flower layers. I'll keep my green same as we had in the center of our flower. I'll change my brush to the first Brush. And following the sketch, I'll start adding these leaves. I'll keep all the leaves on the same layer. This will help us when we Recolor are motif For this leaf, I'll try to overlap them. This will help us create a variety of leaf in the same motif. Moving on to the second part of this leaf. Let's move on to our next motif. For that, I'll select my color as light blue and dark blue. Tap on the light color. So it shows on the top. And we'll need a new layer for this. I'll add a new layer on top of our leaf layer. For this motif to, I'll be adding this drop shaped petals. Let's move on to our next motif, these tiny flowers here. For that we'll add a new layer. We just have to be sure it is below our flower layers. Next we can select a color. Now, go to the Color panel, and I'll select this light and dark purple. Your light bulb should be showing on the top. And I'll add these tiny petals to them. You can even reduce the size of your brush as this motif is too tiny. I'll be keeping all of these flowers on the same LEA. But you can even keep them on a different layer. If you're planning to have each one with a different color, It's better to have them on different layers. Now we need to add Center for these flowers. For that, again, you need a new layer on top of this layer. Select any color of your choice. I'll keep mind as bright pink. Go to the Brush Library. Select our first brush and reduce the size of the brush. And I'll draw these circles for the Center. For your motif to look cohesive. You will have to make sure you have this limited color palette. This was our last motif. We are done with our illustration here. Let's hide our sketch layer. I'll go to the layers. Hide your sketch layer. If you zoom in, this is how the Illustration looks like. Now there's another detail that you can add to your illustration or these running stitches. I have to Stitch Brush in the resource section of this class, you can download. And I even have a class on how to create these brushes. A combination of these brushes on an embroidery motif. We'll give more realistic and detailed look to your illustration. Adding a new layer to add this detail. And we're done with our floral embroidery Illustration here. Let's move on to re-color this illustration in my next class. 6. Recoloring : Let's Recolor our illustration. So our first step will be to duplicate our original file. I'll swipe left and you'll get this option called duplicate. Tap on duplicate. We'll be working on the second file here. I'll tap on this canvas. We'll start by going to the layers. First. I'll select my first flower layer. It's our yellow flower here. Before going to the settings, I'll zoom in so we can see it clearly. Next, we'll go to adjustments. Sure. We'll tap on the first option, that's hue saturation and brightness. This will give you three options at the bottom here. It starts with hue, saturation and brightness. Let's start with the hue first. You can move this tiny dot here and you can see the color changing of our motif. When it is in the center, that's 50 per cent. That's your original color. And then you can move left and right to change the color of your motif. I'll keep mine as this bill, dull green. Once you're happy with the color, you can experiment with the saturation. With this, you can lower or increase your saturation level. Next, let's move on to the brightness. This can help your motif get brighter or darker. Once you're happy with the result, you can deselect. I'll follow the same steps for the center of this flower. Let's start by selecting the layer. Going to Adjustments. Select our first option, that's hue saturation. And I'll experiment with this until I'm happy with the results. Why you recoloring again, make sure you have these similar colors in the whole motive to make it look more cohesive, aim to create a limited color palette. Now for the second flower, I'll show you the second method of recoloring. First by selecting our floral layer. Next we'll go to the same option that's adjustment. But here we'll tap on gradient map. This will open a lot of options at the bottom here. You can customize and create your own color combination. These are some combinations that I created. You can tap on one of these and you can see these tiny boxes. You can change the color of these boxes by tapping on these boxes. I'll tap on one of these. And you can see the color changing in my motif. We can do the same to the other box too. I want my color combination to be very close to these purples. Now, if you need to add another color, you can just tap on an empty space and that will create a new box. And you can add any color inside this by tapping on that tiny square. You can even move them around to delete. You can just hold longer on them and you'll get this option called Delete. Now, I'm happy with my color combination here. Once you're happy, you can tap Done. Now, if you need to save your color combination or create a new one, you can just hold on one of them and tap Duplicate. This way you can have your color combinations saved. You can just tap on these and see how these color combination looks on your motif. I'll go back to my first option, that's purple. I'll keep the center of this flower as green. Let's move on to our next motive. That's this blue one here. Select the layer and go to Gradient Map. Now, sure, I can try out all the other options. I'll keep mine as this bright orange. Just these tiny boxes until you're happy. And tap deselect. To recolor the leaves, I'll be using hue saturation option. I like this greenish blue effect and deselect. Next, let's move on to these tiny flowers. Make sure you're on your correct layer. Adjustments. Hue saturation. Tried to achieve the similar color palette. I'll increase the brightness to make it lighter. And we're done with the recoloring here. You can experiment with a lot of other color combinations. In just few minutes, we can make this completely new, fresh looking color combination. You can check out few more examples of motives and recoloring options in my next lesson. 7. Project & More Examples: For your class project, you can create a stitch brush, and then you can create a motive of your choice. In the resource section, you can find the sketches for these floral illustration. There's a color palette that our food royalty-free images of these embroidery rings. These images can help you with this realistic look to your digital embroidery. And there's a free brush of this basic running stitch. I even have a class on how to create these brushes. You can check on my Skillshare profile. This brush can help you add some more detail to your illustration. Now let's see a few examples of these artworks. I illustrated them using the same brush that we created in the class today. This is a similar Florida illustration that we did in the class today. So all of these flowers are on a different layer. So it was very easy for me to recolor them. This is how it looks after re-color. The second example is these two can illustration. So I added this fabric image, royalty-free image under my illustration. For this illustration, I wanted to recolor only the flowers. This is how it looks with a different color combination. Next is this cactus themed artwork. And this is how it looks when I recolored them. The last example is this floral wreath kind of motif. I hope this gives you an idea on creating your own project in your own style. Please post in the project section of this class. I can't wait to see your beautiful digital embroidery. Thank you for taking this class with me.
