1. Introduction & What You'll Learn: Hey guys, Welcome to my class. My name is Vinita I'm an illustrator and pattern designer based in Singapore. And in this class I'm going to show you how I create my pattern brushes in Procreate. These are dual color brushes. In this class we'll create four pattern brushes. We'll start by illustrating pattern for each brush. I'll show you step-by-step all the settings you need to turn these shapes into brushes. These brushes can be used to create beautiful illustrations and prints for surface pattern design. This class includes two lessons showing you how I create my illustration and patents. The first one is a Macau illustration, and the second one is a floral pattern. I will be showing you step-by-step process of creating these illustrations and patterns with these brushes. These brushes can also be sold on online platform like marketplace or on your own website. To by the end of this class, you'll have a lot of tips and tricks on how to create your own custom brushes. Thank you for taking this class with me. 2. Dual Brush Explanation : Before we start creating our dual brushes, I want to show you how this brush works. These are the brushes we will be creating in our class today. I'll tap on the brush and open one of these brushes. When you open the setting, you can see on the left corner there are two brushes. This is when you combine two brushes to make one, you have to make sure your pattern brush is on the top and the base brush at the bottom. Now let's go to the color panel. This is the color palette in the resource section of this class. You can download this before we start the class. Now to choose color for these brushes. On the right corner you can see the two tiny boxes here. One is a primary color and the other one is the secondary color. To change the color, you have to simply tap on these boxes. Now, when you're done selecting your color, the one showing on the tiny circle here becomes your primary color. So before you leave the panel, you have to make sure your primary color is selected and it is showing in the circle. Let's try out another color combination. I'll try dark blue and light blue. Now I want my primary color to be dark. So I'll make sure it is showing in the circle above. I'll try another pattern brush. I'll select my color as red for primary and yellow for secondary. For this brush, you can see there are three colors. Another brush with the same color. Let's move on to creating our first pattern brush. 3. Pattern Brushes 1 - Daisy: Let's start with our very first pattern Brush. Our first step is to create a new canvas. For that. I'll tap on this plus sign. Again. On this plus sign, I'll keep my Canvas as 3,000 by 3,000 pixel width, 300 DPI, which is standard for printing and tap Create. Next we'll illustrate the shape we need to Create the first part of the brush. For that, I'll go to the Brush Library. We go to calligraphy, select my monoline brush. Next we'll go to the color panel. Select the darkest black color. And I'll draw a circle in the center of this canvas. Draw a circle and hold your fingertip and pencil tip for a perfect circle. Now we need to make sure the circle is exactly in the center of the canvas. For that, I'll select the circle. The snapping your magnetic and snapping should be on the distance around 21. Now when you move the circle, you'll see these golden lines. Once you see these lines, vertical and horizontal, that's when the circle is exactly in the center. Next field is circled with the same black color. Make sure the circle is covering the maximum part of the canvas. Next, we'll create a new folder for our brushes. For that, I'll tap on the Brush Library. Tap on this plus sign that we'll create a new folder. And I'll rename this folder as pattern Brush. Before we start with our brush, we need to copy our Canvas. For that, I'll go to action. Add, Copy Canvas. Go back to the Brush Library, tap on this plus sign. This will open all the settings we need to create a new brush here, understood. But we keep the spacing as 15 per cent. Next, under stabilization, the streamline amount will be 90 per cent, and the stabilization amount will be 50 per cent. Next, under taper, will both of these nodes in the center type in the size to 50 per cent. The dip to 50 per cent to the pressure will be none. Next we'll move on to Shape, tap on, Edit, Import, and paste. Two-finger on this image. This will invert your image and tap Done. Sure, the rotation will be max. Move down, and tilt roundness will be maxed to. Next. Under rendering. The rendering mode will be uniform glaze. On the wet mix. Make everything as none. Under Color dynamics. Move down to Colour pressure. Here the saturation will be 50%. Brightness will be max, and secondary color will be max to. Now just about the secondary color. You can see this option called max. When you tap on this option, you'll get this option called numeric and pressure. Under pressure, there's this string with the tiny node. I pull the string up and make it horizontal. This setting helps the color in your brush to be consistent. There won't be any gradient effect in your brush. Below that is Colour tilde. Sure, the saturation will be max. Brightness will be minus hundred, and secondary color will be max. To. Next under dynamics, the size will be max. Next, under Apple Pencil, the size will be max. The opacity will be none. Now next, under properties, your audience to screen should be switched off. Now, let's adjust the size of the brush. The maximum size, we can keep that as 300%, the minimum as 1%. And tap Done. Now we have the first part of the brush ready. Next we'll move on to the Pattern bought that I'll go to layers, reduce the opacity of the circle to around 30 per cent. We need the circle as a guideline so our pattern doesn't go out of the circle. Next, we'll add a new layer. And we'll illustrate our daisy flower on this layer. To draw our flower, we need to switch on our Drawing Guide. For that, I'll go to action Canvas. Switch on your Drawing Guide and tap on Edit Drawing Guide. You'll find these options at the bottom. Tap on Symmetry options. Here we'll select quadrant and tap Done Next we'll go to layers again. Here I need a layer without Drawing Guide, so I'll add a new layer and make sure it doesn't have assisted written. That means the drawing guide is not on for this layer. I need this layer to draw the center of the Daisy. I'll go back to the Brush Library and select my monoline brush. And I'll draw a circle in the center. To draw a perfect circle. Hold your pencil on the screen with your fingertip on the screen to fill this with the same color. Make sure it is exactly in the center of this canvas. Next, I'll go back to our assisted layer to draw the petals for the Daisy. And I'll draw a petal and fill it with the same color. I'll not draw the other petals. Instead, I'll duplicate this layer, select this shape and rotate 90 degree. Once you're happy with your flower, go back to the layer and hide our SOC layer. Our next step is to copy the canvas. For that, I'll go to action. Add, Copy Canvas. Tab on the Brush Library. Go back to our pattern Brush folder. Duplicate our first brush we created. Tap on this Brush. Go to Shape, Edit, Import, and paste our flower here. And tap Done. Go to Stroke Path. And you can adjust your spacing here. You can keep your spacing. How much of a you're comfortable with. Mine is around 54%. Next, go to Color dynamics. Move down under stroke color Chido. The secondary color will be max. And the color pressure, the saturation will be max. And the Colour tilt. Make everything as none. And tap Done. Next, we'll combine these two brushes. For that, we need to select both the brushes and tap on this combined option. That will combine both the brushes. Tap on this brush and we can rename this brush. For that. I'll tap on about this brush. And you can rename this as Daisy or Daisy brush. And tap Done. Let's try this brush on the Canvas. Let's try a new color combination. I'll select the red as my primary, and yellow as my secondary. Let me try another primary color. I select green and yellow as my secondary. And we're done with are brush here. But there's another option that we can try. Duplicate this brush, tap on this Brush. Go to taper. Pull both of these nodes on the outer ends, make the size as none. None. Go to Apple Pencil. And the size as C 2%. Repeat the steps on the second Brush Tool. This option is when you don't need the tapering effect to your brush. And dab done. This is how the brush looks without taper. Let's move on to our second Brush. 4. Pattern Brush 2 - Leaf Shape: Let's start with our second pattern brush. We will not be repeating a lot of steps from the first brush because we will be using are false brush as our base brush. This brush is slightly different from our first brush. We'll start by editing our drawing guide first. For that, I'll go to action, Canvas, edit, drawing guide, symmetry, tap on options. And we need our drawing guide for this as horizontal and dab done. Next we'll go to layers, add a new layer, tap on this layer, tap Drawing Assist. Next, go to Color panel. Select a jet black color. From the brush library. Will select a monoline brush from calligraphy and hide our circle layer. We need this circuit as a guideline so our pattern doesn't go out of the silicon. And now we can draw our leaf-like Becton. Fill this shape with the same black color. Select the shape and make sure this is exactly in the center of the canvas. Next, we'll go to layers and reduce the opacity of this shape. I'll reduce the opacity to around 50%. I'll be adding another pattern on top of this shape. For that, I'll add a new layer. Tap on this layer and tap Drawing Assist. I'll be drawing three circles here. You can even try any other pattern of your choice. You just have to make sure the opacity of the petal is around 50 per cent and the baton is in jet-black color. I'll fill these circles with the same black color. Once we're done with the pattern, we go back to the layer, height or circle layer. Now to copy the canvas, I go to action. Add, Copy Canvas. Go back to our pattern brush folder. Here. I'll duplicate our first Daisy brush. I pulled this brush on the top. On this brush, makes sure you're on the first pattern brush. Go to Shape it, important, and paste and tap them. Next, move to Stroke Path. You can adjust your space here. Next we can rename this brush under About this brush. I'll rename this brush as leaf brush and tap Done. Let's try out this brush on the canvas. Let's select the color first. I'll keep red as my primary and yellow as my secondary. Now, if you see closely this brush has three colors because we've used different opacity while making the pattern for this brush. You can see orange in the area where the opacity was less. Red and yellow together are making orange there. Let's try out another color combination. Now, if you need the brush without the tapering effect, you simply need to duplicate the second brush we created for the daisy brush. I'll pull this brush below our leaf brush. Now, our second step is to copy our Canvas. For that, I'll go to action, add, Copy Canvas. Go back to our brush library. Tap on this brush. Go to Shape, Edit, Import, Paste, tap Done. Next, we need to adjust our spacing and the Stoke, but we need to rename this brush. For that I'll go to About this brush. Do you name this brush as leaf brush tool and tap Done? And now we have our second option two. Let's move on to our third pattern brush 5. Pattern Brush 3 - Geomatric : Let's start with our third pattern brush. For this pattern, do we need a horizontal drawing guide? Our first step is to draw a shape. For that, I'll select my monoline brush, go to the color panel, and select a jet black color. Next on a new layer, make sure you're drawing assist is on. For that, you can tap on the layer, tap Drawing Assist. Next, unhide your circle layer. I'll be drawing this arrow shape. Next, I'll duplicate this layer and slide it left. Once you're happy with the thickness, will close the ends. Go back to layers and merge both of these layers and fill this with the same black color. Next, we'll duplicate this layer two times. Select one of the layer and reduce the opacity to around 50 per cent. And slide this layer left. Select the second duplicate layer and reduce the opacity to around 35 per cent. Slide left again. But ahead of our first layer, I'll further reduce the opacity of this layer to around 205-20-3205 per cent. We can hide us so clear. Next step is to copy our canvas, that action, ADD and copy canvas. Next we'll go to our pattern brush folder. Here we can duplicate our leaf brush. Tap on this brush. Go to Shape, Edit, Import, Paste, and tap Done. Next we can go to Stroke Path and adjust our spacing here. You can keep the spacing anything of your choice. Next week and rename this brush under About this brush. I'll rename this brush as geometric brush. You can rename anything of your choice. And tap Done. Let's try out this brush on the canvas. While making this brush, we've used these different opacity for our pattern. That gives you different shades of gray. That gives your brush a gradient effect. Different shades of the secondary color. You can play with a lot of color combination for these brushes. Now, if you need an option without tapering effect, you can duplicate our second leaf brush. I'll pull this brush on the top, tap on this brush. And all you need to do is based on geometric shape here. That I'll go to Shape, Edit, Import, Paste, tap Done. You can adjust your spacing on the stroke path. And your second brush is ready too. This is how the brush looks on the canvas. Let's move on to our food brush 6. Pattern Brush 4 - Triangle Shape: Let's start with our fourth brush. For this brush tool, we need horizontal symmetry. I first step is to add a new layer, tap on this layer and tap Drawing Assist. Next we'll go to the Brush Library, select our monoline brush under calligraphy. Go to the color panel and select a jet black color. We go back to layers and unhide our circle layer. We need this circle as a guideline. I'll draw our pattern shape on the new layer. I'll be drawing these triangles with jet black color and fill it with the same color. And I'll be adding more detail on these triangles. For that, I'll add a new layer. Go to the color panel and select white color, a pure white color. I'll not be using symmetry for this layer. So make sure your layer doesn't show assisted because I need both the triangles with different patterns. You can even add your own different shapes and details to these triangles. Once you're done with your pattern, go to Layers and hide the circle layer. Next to copy the canvas, I'll go to action, add and copy canvas. Next to the brush library. Go back to our pattern brush folder. Duplicate our geometric brush. Tap on this brush, Shape. Edit, Import and paste, and tap Done. Next to adjust the spacing when you go to Stroke Path. And you can adjust the space here. Now to rename this brush will go to About this brush. And I'll rename this brush as triangle brush. But you can rename it anything of your choice. And tap Done. Let's try out this brush on the canvas. Let's make the same brush without tapering. For that, I'll duplicate our geometric brush tool. Move it below our first triangle brush. Tap on the brush, will do Shape, Edit, Import. And based on shape here and tap Done. You can adjust the space on the Stroke Path and rename this brush under About this brush. I'll rename it as triangle brush tool. And tap done. You're done with all our pattern brushes here. Let's move on to our illustration and pattern 7. Macaw Illustration: Let's illustrate a Macau using these pattern brushes. I have this Macau sketch in the resource section of this class. You can download and follow along. If you have the same file. When you go to layers, you can see just one layer with the sketch on it. So our first step is to add a new layer. For that. I'll tap on this plus sign. Tap on the Brush Library. You can select any brush of your choice. I'll be selecting the triangle brush, the one with the taper, because that gives a very beautiful feather effect. Next tap on the Color panel. I have this color palette in the resource section two, I will select this royal blue color. For my secondary color. I'll select the lighter blue. Make sure you select the dark blue forced to make that as your primary color. We will be using symmetry for this sketch. Make sure on your layer, you tap on Drawing Assist. And I'll start adding the first layer of the feather. Let's move on to the second layer of the Phaedo for that and go to Layers, add a new layer, tap on the layer and tap Drawing Assist. For this layer, I want my feather to be lighter. I'll make both of my blues lighter. Make sure your primary colors shows in the silken. Next, I'll select another pattern brush. For this layer. You can choose any brush of your choice. I'll be selecting Daisy brush. And let's add another layer of feather to this board. Next, I want to add a gradient effect to the feather. Make sure you're on your second Fidelio. Select with your free hand tool. Around the inner area of this feather. Next at the bottom you'll see this option called fader. Increase that to around 16%. This will help you with a beautiful gradient effect. Go to Adjustments. Go. When you put this tiny little nodes down, it will make your shade darker. And when you pull it up, it makes it lighter. I'll keep it lighter. And deselect. For the next layer of feather, I'll add a new layer, tap on the layer and tap Drawing Assist. I'll select another pattern brush. I'll select the geometric brush. Next, go to the color panel. I'll select orange as my primary color, and yellow as my secondary. Makes sure you tap on orange to make it as your primary color. And let's add another layer of feather. Next, again for the gradient effect, I'll follow the same steps. I'll select with my free hand tool that one feather and increase the feather to around 13 to 14%. Go to Adjustments, Curves You can pull this tiny note down that makes it darker. Once you're done, de-select. I'll be following the same steps for the last layer of the spindle. Let's move on to the bottom of this bowl. For this part, you have to make sure the layer you're adding is below all the upper Fidelio. Now for the bottom feeder, I'll be matching all the brushes and the colors seem as we did on the top. I'll add another separate layer for the center of this photo. Adding the gradient effect at the bottom too. Let's move on to the head of this board. For that, I'll be adding a new layer, just about the sketch that will be below all the other layers. You can select any inking brush, tap on inking. And you can select studio pen or technical pen. I'll be selecting technical pen. I'll select a bright yellow color for the head. Fill this with the same color. Now for the beak, will be doing a new layer just below our head layer. You can select any bright color of your choice. I'll be selecting this bright turquoise color. I'll select this dark blue for the ice. Select my Daisy pattern brush. I'll select the combination of white and dark blue, making my white as the primary color. And you can use it as a stamp brush for the ice. Next, we need clipping mask for our yellow head layer so that we can add some pattern on that to add a new layer above our head layer. Tap on the layer and tap clipping mask. I'll select the DZ brush to go to the color panel. And I'll select the combination of white and yellow. I'll keep my primary color as yellow and add some pattern to the head. Next, adding clipping mask to be clear too. I'll select the same color as beak and the secondary color as the darker blue. And use our daisy brush like a stamp brush and add button to the B2. I need to add the gradient effect for the head. I'll merge all the layers, the pattern and the head layer. Select the upper part of the head with my free hand tool. Tap on the feather and increase it to around 18 per cent. Tap on adjustments. To make it darker. I'll pull this node down and de-select. We're done with our Macau illustration here. And I added some more details with the same brush. And this is how it looks after turning it into a seamless pattern. 8. Floral Pattern : Let's start with our floral pattern. This sketch is in the resource section of this class. You can download and follow along. There are two sketches on this canvas. We'll start with a sketch one first. Before we start, we need our drawing guide. For that, I'll go to actions, canvas, drawing guide, tap on, Edit Drawing Guide. Here under symmetry, go to Options. Make sure vertical is selected and tap Done. Next we'll go to layers. Add a new layer, tap on this layer and tap Drawing Assist. When you see assisted on your layer, that means drawing guide is switched on for that Leo, go to Brush Library and you can select any pattern brush with the tapered effect. Next we'll go to Color panel. Select our colors here. I'll tap one of the box, select a green color. For the second color, I'll select as light green. I'll start adding these leaf shape on the outer circle of the sketch. Next we'll be adding a gradient effect to this leaf. For that, make sure you're on the same layer. Tap on the Selection tool. Make sure Freehand is selected. And I'll select the lower area, the inside area of this pattern. Next step on fiddle. Increase this amount to around 20, 25%. Next, go to Adjustments, girls. And you can move this tiny node. You can see when it goes lower, it gets darker. When you go up, it goes lighter. I'll keep it lighter, but you can select anything of your choice. Next we'll go to layers, add a new layer, tap on the layer and tap Drawing Assist. Go to the Brush Library. Again, you can select any brush of your choice. I'll be selecting the Daisy pattern brush. Go to the color panel, and I'll select dark pink and light pink. And I'll add just another layer of petals like stroke. I'll try to overlap with the leaves. Next, I'll follow the same step for the gradient effect. Now for the next layer, again, I'll go back to layers, add a new layer, tap on the layer, tap Drawing Assist. Select any brush of your choice. Go back to the color panel. Select your color combination. And again, I'll add this petal like shape. Follow the same steps for the gradient effect. And again for the last layer of this flower will add a new layer. Tap on the layer, tap Drawing Assist. Select the color of your choice. Now here we are done with our first plan. Now we'll be creating other color combination of the same flower. First step is to select all our flower layer and group them. Duplicate this group, hide our first group. Open the second group. And we'll start changing the color for the first layer, the leaf layer. I'll tap on that layer. Go to Adjustments Hue, saturation and brightness. And here you can move these tiny node and adjust the color. You can keep any color of your choice. It's always better to have a limited color palette for your pattern to look cohesive. So you might have to choose one of the color from our first flower. I'll be keeping mine as bright pink and move to the second layer, again to the adjustments. And I'll change the color here and keep it as a similar glean from our first flower. Next, I'll unhide our first flower group. Duplicate this group, hide one group and merge the second one. You can pick up the merge floor and take it out of the group. I'll follow the same steps for the second flower too. Once you're done merging both the floss, hide our first sketch layer and unhide our second sketch layer beneath our second sketch for the placement of our flowers. I please both the flask into these curves. Select the flower rotated and place it inside this gulf. Repeat the same with the second plot. Two. Next, go to layers, add a new layer below, put the flower layers. We will be illustrating smaller flowers for these curves. For these flowers, you can choose any brush of your choice, but you need to make sure these colors are same as the bigger flowers. Next, I'm going to add another layer. This is for another layer of petals on the top of our first one. Adding gradient effect to this layer. Next we'll go to layers, merge both the layers for this smaller flower. Duplicate this flower. So we can place the same flower in the other curve. Rotate this floor and fit this to the other side. Once you're done with the floss, we'll move on to the stem. For that, I will add a new layer below all offloaded layers. I'll select my geometric brush. You can even go with the brush without the tapering. A more comfortable with the tapering brush. Next, I'll go to the color panel. Select darker and lighter green. Make sure you select your primary color. Now following the sketch, I'll draw my stem. Next. Moving on to the leaves. For this, I'll add a new layer. Below the stem layer. Select our leaf pattern brush With the same color combination, I'll add leaves. You can even do these leaves or any other detail of your choice. Next, I'll merge both leaf and stem layer. Duplicate this layer. Select this layer and flip horizontal. Now we need to split this stem vertical so that it can fit with the second flower too. Once you have done splitting, I erase all the extra stem and leaves that is overlapping. I'll add an extra leaf and stem in the empty areas. So we are ready with a repeat block here. I'll select all our flower and stem layers and group them. Duplicate this group, hide our first group, open the second group, and merge all the layers. Hide our sketch layer. Next, select our merge layer. I'll title this repeat to check my seamless pattern. And we are done with our floral pattern here. You can even recolor this pattern in so many other ways. 9. Project: For your class project, you can create any brush of your choice. You can even create an illustration or a pattern with these brushes. I have attached a couple of sketches and a color palette in the resource section of this class that you can download and follow along for your project do. One is for the Macau illustration and the second one is for the floral pattern. These are few more pattern brush examples that can help you with the project. This is another example of Patton done with these brushes. Please post in the project section of this class. I can't wait to see your beautiful pattern brushes.
