About This Class
Are you a bird lover who wants to improve your sketching skills? In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll learn how to draw birds in flight with pencil by focusing on what matters most: simple shapes, clean outlines, and accurate gesture.
I’m Andy Villon, a fine artist and art teacher, and I know a lot of students enjoy painting and coloring—but feel stuck when it comes to drawing. That’s exactly why I made this class. I’ll guide you through a simple approach to bird drawing that helps you capture the basic form and movement without getting overwhelmed by feathers and tiny details.
We’ll sketch birds step-by-step, concentrating on the overall silhouette, proportions, and the flow of the wings so your drawings look believable and energetic. As you practice, you’ll build confidence with pencil sketching—and you’ll have a solid foundation if you want to add detail or color later.
This class is great for beginner artists, animal lovers, and anyone who wants a relaxing way to practice gesture drawing, wildlife sketching, and drawing from reference

Meet Your Teacher
I'm a fine artist and Skillshare teacher specializing in colorful, realistic animal and floral art using Posca markers, acrylic paint, watercolors, and mixed media. I've been working as a professional artist since 2013 and teaching art since 2021, helping beginners and growing artists build confidence through clear, step-by-step instruction.
My classes are beginner-friendly and project-focused, designed to help you create vibrant artwork while learning practical skills like shading, layering, texture, and color control. I'm especially known for teaching realistic animals, glowing effects, and eye-catching florals, inspired by bold color palettes and what I like to call Instagram-style art -- bright, expressive, and visua... Hands-on Class Project
or your project, you’ll create three bird sketches using the same simple method from class.
-
Follow along as you sketch the two birds from the lessons using the included reference photos.
-
Then, choose one additional bird photo (your own photo is perfect, or find one online) and draw it on your own.
Project focus: keep it simple. Aim for the basic outline and overall form—gesture, wing shapes, and proportions. Don’t worry about feathers or heavy detail. This is about building a strong foundation that you can refine later if you want.
