1. Walking stick of your dreams: My name is Caleb, and I want to welcome all of you to my class. Make sure to push that full button. Say, you could be up to date and be the 1st 1 to know about new posts and contests. You make a variety of walking states like these. I'm gonna teach you everything you need to know. Step by step from what tools you need and how to use them. I've been making walking sticks for years, and I've had so much fun making them, I've been able to give him as gifts. I mean, it would sell him. And there's just something about turning a ordinary piece of wood into this. It's so satisfying. And I want share that with you. This class I get to you, you'll be able to make these locking sticks and they walking sticks in the future, your own by playing your own flair on them. And that's the goal of this class. Thank you somewhat for watching again. My name is Caleb, and I hope to see you in my class, but I
2. Tools you will need : all right, friends, it's Caleb. And in this video, I'm gonna show you the base that you're gonna need to make a walking stick in a really nice one. The tools I use in this video are good quality, and they're cheap. How I know that you might ask. Well, I use them. I use them all the time. And they always get me a good quality, shiny, amazing walking stick. And it can get you the walking stick of your dreams and a couple other tools that help speed up the process. They make your walking stick look a little nicer, but they're optional. AM Negotiate those right now. So the first thing you're gonna eat this safety glasses you got protect your peepers, guys don't endure papers. You're going to need those to see what you're doing when you're making the walking stick. So, um, the next thing you're going get his work loves these with ones I like to use their v gopi you work loves, they're cheap, and you can get a few pairs for, like, under $20. The next thing you want to cut your walking stick to size as a craftsman. Wallboard saw this thing cuts like butter, man, it's awesome. The next thing you're gonna need is a good, sturdy knife. I recommend cold steel, especially if you're on a budget, because you can get really cheap, one that's very sturdy and very good quality. Okay, so this is where it gets optional. Now you can get a coarse medium and fine saying sponge or paper, and that would be give you the best result. But if you're really on a budget, you could get away with just the coarse and fine together or just medium. The next thing that you need is a clear, oil based polyurethane lost. This is a coin that will protect your stick from the elements, and it will make a look beautiful. You'll also want some ah, 5 50 pair record or leather cord for the wrist strap, so the next thing you want is some disposable gloves. This is for point on the gloss that I just mentioned. The last optional tool is a cold steel cookery plasma shade. This will make it easier for trimming branches off your walking steak or peeling bark. Also, if the diameter of your stick is too thick, you can trim it down so you can use it for a walking stick. Okay, so you want to get a drill for well drilling? You can also get a felt screwdriver for drilling. If you can't afford a drill, do There is one thing I forgot to mention, and that's what staying. Um, sorry about that. You don't have to have it, though. This is just one example of what I did. I, uh, did a little swirl on mine. Made a two tone. Pretty cool, huh? You think it's cool? Well, if you think it's cool, you'll need some wood stain. Um, you could meet this whole thing dark if you want it, but you don't have to. You could also just leave it playing. You know, if you want a handsome you to the wood, you don't even need what saying. But nonetheless, I'm going to show you how I did that. Anyway, guys, thank you so much for watching I'm ko up. Remember to have fun be safe and I'll see you in the next to toil. Barry Friends
3. How to trim/peel your walking stick: Hey, guys, how's it going? My name is Caleb. How are you? I hope you're well. So anyway, in this beyond will be showing you how to use a knife. This is going to be the most important technique you learn because we're using it for the majority of the work. So let's get started right now. Now, a good way to think of it is imagine that, uh, from this part your elbow, Right Where bends right your forearm. There's a pipe or stick inside, going all way down to your wrist, preventing a risk for moving this way pretty much at all. And on Lee allowing a risk to move this way. A tiny bet. Imagine that a sticks inside your arm connected from your wrist to about right here and preventing your wrist from moving this way and limiting moving up and down and feel free to grab a stick in practice. It's gonna be this. It's gonna look like this if you're doing it right. So, like I said, wrist straight. You re moving your arm up and down little motions like this. Watch carefully. It's giving little controlled taps on the stink. See how well that works, remember, is gonna be up and down, up and down, up, on down like this. It gave me, like, little motions, little taps, a little caps, little taps of love on your walking stick. You see, it's pilling, clean and smoothly. This way. Just slowly move your knife up and down, having your knife slightly angled toward the blade toward the stick. Uh, just up and down, gentle short, a little fast movements. So I just want to point out that I'm peeling the bark off and strips. That's the main goal. Whether short strips are long strips just peeled off that way, and they will go a lot faster and easier. I also want mention that my hand is always above the knife. It's never below, so I'm always kind away from my hand. You can also use this technique to get off branches. All you have to do is use the same technique I showed you, just trying to make sure your knife hits the branch in the same place every time, and then you get right through. So after you got the bulk of the bark we're gonna do is get like a little Thai strip of wood and don't let break out the stick, but let it roll over itself. Here, a posit clip. Right now, this is what you want. You want to kind of twist and roll around itself. It's kind of like the chocolate shavings on dessert. You know, when the chocolates, like, rolled over itself like shaved chocolate. That's what you want magic you're doing now. The goal here is to get off what I like to call Sub Mark. It's the It's the brown stuff you see here. I'll posit clip again. It's a brown stuff you see right there that doesn't look good on walking stick. So use the same technique. Er showed you to pill that icky brown to give a nice, clean look. You're going to point it towards stick, going to move down, and as your movie down your go on, twist the edge of the blade away from the stick. You're gonna wanna go with the curb like this. It's giving this sore motion so usually, when you're done peeling a rocket stick, you get these annoying the wings as like to call him. So all you have to do is eyeball were the wing originates or stops cracking on wood and then put your knife on it, rock it back and forth gently until it falls off. Also, just be careful not to get the wood under the little wing because you don't want damage the walking stick and have to smooth it out later. But if you do, you can always sand it. No big deal in. Ah, a little trick I like to use is put my knife under the wing pulled away from the walking stick to see where the wing ends So I know I'm kind The right spot you guys for watching I will see you later and make sure when you're done with this project to post in the Project gallery I would love to see your work by guys.
4. How to cut your walking stick: Hey, guys. So in this video, you're gonna learn how to use a saw. Um, if you haven't watched video on how to use a knife, please go watch it. Because we're using a very similar technique. Let's get started right now. So when you say you saw, it's very similar to the knife technique I showed you. You're imagine a bar going from this party arm to your wrist, almost stopping side to side motion and limiting up and down motion. And instead of moving your arm like best like I showed you with the night, you're gonna be moving your arm like this. But you see how similar that IHS forward and back versus up and down. So you already have the knowledge with the ninth. You're just adjusting that technique slightly and you'll do just fine. If you're kind of walking stick directly from the tree. Where would be starting from the top? Remember to keep your wrist straight. It's a lot like using that for seven step up and down motion. It's a back and forward motion, but keeping your wrist straight and the saw very straight. Now we're only gonna go through 1/4 way through. Now we're going to switch over to the bottom and the reason we're doing this it's so the pressure is being distributed on the top and bomb evenly. If we didn't do this, it would crack and it would break. So once you've gotten about 1/4 of the way through the bottom as well as the top, we're just going to switch the Sol over and finish it off from the top. You can cut the rest way through. No worries. Now, before you start trying to cut your walking stick toe length, I really recommend, like practicing kind off the branches first. Like here. I'm just using some stairs. It's really useful to use stairs because you just have plenty of room for the salt moving. It's it's a good place to hold it down. Now watch my wrists carefully. Do you see how it's stained straight? It's very similar once again, how you use the knife, that stuff I'm using up and down motion. I'm limiting my, uh, risk going moving up and down and my wrist is not really moving to side to side. Okay, One thing keep in mind is make sure your cane away from your hand. Okay, It's very important that you cut away from your hand. Also, when you're holding down, the walk is steak. Make sure you're putting plenty of your weight on the walking stick with the hand you're holding it down with, and also make sure to use your foot but keeping a safe distance away from the sob late. Okay, so if you're struggling with it, moving all over the place, just laying more of your body weight on it and you'll cut through smoothly. No problem. So to start off, take your saw and cut a shallow groove in the walking steak. And when you're doing this, don't put too much pressure on it, but still use firm pressure. And basically, this will just help guide your cell later when you're kind all the way through and you can just use ah, pulling back motion and step going forward and back at first. If that makes it, use your for you get yourself a board, set your walking stick on top, and if you do have a bar, just find something else, like stairs or something. And like I said before, keep your wrist straight and cut about 1/3 of the way through. And once you've done that, you're gonna want to turn it. Do like 1/2 turn and keep your saw blade straight with the previous cut, you mate, and you don't have to. You can just sub pull the saw backwards only, and that makes it a lot easier. One last, simple thing to do, and that's just to return the stick to the starting position. And then you just saw Saw saw keeping your wrist even like I told you, keeping the saw. Even with your previous cut and good job, you got through it, and now you have a nice clean cut. And if there's some rough edges afterward, no biggie. You just need to even that out with a knife. You know, just just cut it off. It'll be fine. We'll be good. Fifth, don't worry. This technique also works for your removing those little nubs you know from kind off branches that you sometimes get, so you have a nice, smooth stake. It also works with kind of small branches. But, you know, I actually think it's easier to use the knife like I showed you, but you could do with the salt to you guys for watching. And I will see you in the next video. Bye bye.
5. Trimming your walking stick the faster way: So this is why the tools are optional. But if you happen to have a shave, this is great technique to know. So what you're gonna dio is you're going use it almost exactly like how I taught you to use the ninth. Except you're gonna allow your wrist to move up and down a little more, but still limit the side to side motion. Because if you're to tilt your wrist too much of the site, you would end up taking a chunk. How the stick instead, the branch that you want to cut off. So when you're came branches, it's like with a knife. You keep the machete in the same place. You want to hit the branch in the same area every time, and you want to be careful not to take like a chunk out of the stick itself because that would look ugly. That could hurt the strength of the stick. So just focused on keeping the machete straight parallel with the stick, letting the weight of the machete do the work for you. Also make sure to cut away from your hands as always. Okay, so so nine is the diameter of your walking stick is too thick and you want Trim it down. Well, this how you do it, you're going. Use a machine like the knife you're going. Keep your wrist straight. You're gonna move your wrist up and down slightly and not laying it moved to side to side very much. Keep your wrist straight. Remember that you can let move up and down a little bit more than with the knife. A Merete. Use the weight of the machete. Move with it. Keep the misshapen parallel with the walking stick. You see how I'm doing that, and it's not huge motions. I'm doing little gentle motions. I'm laying machines, do most of work and notice how the wood is. Once again, cow curling over itself. It's Callie peeling an apple in one go. The skin rolls over itself. That's what's happening here, so let's get a closer look at that, so watch carefully here. So I take my machete and I just start to pointed slightly towards stick, and I start tapping very gently so you see how it's rolling over itself. That's what we want now. Keeping nine. We're not just ripping strips of wood off. This were carefully trimming it, which means recutting it. We're not just ripping the strips away. So the best way describe it is we're basically whittling with a machete, smoothly removing the wood. The goal when doing this is just to leave a fairly neat surface. It doesn't have to be perfect. It can be a little rough. So when you get towards the bottom, just simply get yourself a wooden board. You don't wanna have the machete, you know, slipped and hit the ground, because that will do it very quickly. And you don't want that. So make sure you get yourself a board. Thank you guys. So much for watching. My name is Caleb, and I hope to see you in the next video. Bye, guys.
6. Making the wrist strap : Hello, everybody. Welcome back. My name is killed. And this video, I'm going to show you how to make a risk drop for your walking stick. This is so your walking stick stays securely attached to your hand at all times. So to get started is implicated piece of paper and folded three times into a little rectangle. Next, get a measuring tape or ruler and measure out two lines exactly one inch apart in the center of the paper. Next, Simply extend the lines you just drew to the end of the paper. So it's right on the edge right there like this to find where to put the wrist drop. We need to find you know where you like to hold the stick where it's comfortable for you now that you found where you like to hold it simply mark right under your fingers. So match up the top line on your paper with one on your stick. Okay? Once you've done that, now use a bomb. One of the paper, and draw a line parallel with it. So now our secondary lying is exactly one inch below the first line that we drew on the state. This is so we know where to drill because we want our wrist strap about an inch below where we like to hold the stick we're giving matching the top paper line with the bottom one on the stick. And they were gonna drop from the top line to the bomb line on the paper, and they were gonna lie up again and do the exact same thing until we have a square. Next, we're gonna layer paper from car two corner on our square, and then we're going to draw a line across it, going to align the paper lines with the two cars with the square and draw yet another line across. And we have an X inside the square. Next, you want to get screwdriver, and we want to put the screwdriver in the center of the X, creating a small dent. Start the slowly just by twisting your wrist back and forth are pushing gently. So you have a little dent. So the screwdriver doesn't slip when you do a nice hard push to get the real dent, or we can take our knife and poke the center of the X and then twist in a circular motion crane a dent so you can use either a knife or screwdriver for this. So the reason we create the dent is so that the drill bit will have something interesting. When you're drilling on around surface like a walking stick, it can easily slip on you. So we gave a nice foundation to rest in. So to get perfectly straight, whole start off slowly. You know, don't start the drove too fast and keep the drove It centered with the X that we made. So just make sure you're holding down the walking stick with a hand and maybe your foot to to keep it still while you're drilling. Remember, don't be tense. Are you doing this? Really? Try to just relax. Where you doing this? So, like I said, just relaxing, really just focused on keeping the drill bit in the very center of the X, and you'll be just fine. So now when you get towards the end and you have just like I don't know, a few seconds left her drilling, put your fist under the walking stick and set your fist on the ground so your walking stick is off the floor, so you don't hurt the floor. So, believe or not, you can actually use a screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver to drill through the walking stick. I know why I first started. This is all I had. I didn't have a drill. I could afford a drill. And this is what I could use to use a screwdriver for drilling. All you do is take the screwdriver put in this area hand wrap your fingers around and keep the index finger above the handling. Also still touching the metal of the screwdriver again. This is very similar to using a knife like I showed you and steb going up and down your gun Twist back and forth. You see, your risk is still straight When stuff going up and down you're twisting back and forth, back and forth, back and forth So it's the same technique Use the X Keep the screwdriver center of the eggs and you're gonna push down slightly with downward pressure You're going twist back and forth, back and forth So just keep the screwdriver even with the X and actually lessen your pressure Now you don't want to use a lot of pressure towards the end. You wanna have very little pressure and then you're done a good job, guys. Good job. And then just sand off the marker until it's gone again. I'm Calif. Thank you all for watching, and I hope to see you in the next video by
7. Sanding to make it smooth: Hello, everyone. My name is Caleb and today you're going to learn by far the easiest technique, I think, and that is sanding. Let's go. So to get sand and get your course medium and Feinstein's Bunches, or just your coarse and fine or just medium so really, really simple tiny care. You just get the same sponge. Put it in the palm of your hand, pressed up against the walking steak and just kind of wrap your palm of your hand around the Sandys bunch. And then with your free hand, you're gonna turn the walking stick as you move the want the sanding sponge up and down, just like so you just keep doing that, you literally just repeat this up and down the whole entire walking steak until it's smooth . Now, of course, you're gonna repeat these steps. If you have all three Sandy's budgets, you're gonna go coarse medium than fine. If you just have course and find, then you just mostly send it with the course and then switch to the fine. Every have medium. Well, you can do then terror thing with just that, and you just repeat that step. You just move the same spoon, drop it down and turn it with your other hand. That's all there is to it. So now, time to do the ends. Once you've done the rest of the walking stick. So putting the poly hands and been over the top of the walking stick and you're just gonna twist your wrist back and forth, You can't like your open that door knob, that kind of motion and make sure to do the bottom to the top and bottom. Make sure both ends are very smooth and just twist it like your turn adorn up and it will be amazing. So now we need to stand that whole We drove earlier to do that, simply move the sponge around in a circular motion over the whole until smooth on both sides. Okay, so we won't get the inside of the whole too. So use the corner of your sponge like this and turn in a circular motion. Make sure to turn the same sponge away from the little bald spot on the edge there of the sanding sponge. You don't want to turn it towards the little bald spot where you can see this bunch because of rip off the same paper off the sponge, so make sure to turn it away from there like that. So again, get a screwdriver and you're gonna be using this to sand the inside of the hole. Um, just move the screwdriver in and out. That's all there is to it until it's smooth. The reason you want the inside so smooth is we don't want our Peric order or wherever we're using for the wrist strap to get snagged and ugly. DUP. You know, being caught in the rough surfaces inside. So to check her work simply gay con swab er com ball and run it over the surface of the whole. If very little or no Contin gets caught, then it's more than smooth enough to move on. Make sure you check both sides, by the way. Now you can also check the inside by running the cotton swab inside, and if again, very little or no cotton gets con side, you're good to go. You've done a wonderful job sanding If a lot cotton gets turn off, don't worry, just repeat the steps I showed you and tell it smooth now. Time to check the entire surface of the walking steak. Now you can use cotton to do this, uh, or you could eyeball it and then just take a couple your fingers and feel the entire thing . And if your fingers just wide over and it feels just smooth and wonderful and just scrumptious, then you're ready to go. You did a great job saying, If it's still rough, no worries. Just take your medium or fine ST sponge and continue Sandy until it's smooth again. I'm Calif. Thank you all for watching, and I hope to see you in the next video by.
8. Staining to make cool designs : everybody. My name is Caleb. Welcome back. So today is staining day who? Look what I did with this. You can do this too. And without further ado, let's get started. So get a damp cloth or paper towel and also a dry one and wipe it down thoroughly with both . So I don't want any stain at all on the bomber by a walking stick. So what I did here is I put a grocery bag over the bomb and I taped it tight shut, so no stain can drip in. Once you've taped all around the bank, just give a nice tight squeeze at the bomb and you're all good to go. So get some gorilla tape, masking tape or any tape you have around as laws. It sticks really well. Next you want her in half, so you have thin strips of tape. Now, instead of a one big thick one, So start at the top and pick the angle. You want the stripe to be next? Loosely pun the tape, so it's almost like moulds to the very shape of the stick in every way. Now this you can be kind of hard sometimes, but seriously, loosely put it on the walking, sticking cow, rub it with your fingers and tell it, like forms to every curve, every crevice, every crack on the walking stick you want to be like, perfectly molded to the walking stick. You won't be able to see the shape of the walking stick through the tape and then use like the palm of your hand to flatten it down and your fingers to get it, Really, in the grooves of the walking stick. Some spots you just can't get the tape to fit smoothly. So what you can dio is Were you having trouble? You just tear the tape that then get a new piece of tape and stick it to the part that's Ari on the stick at the same angle and then rub it with your finger until it stuck securely in place. So do this in short strips of tape. You know, don't try to do with one long piece because you're you're going to get a lot creases that way, and then the stain will sneak in. Another tip is you can set on your lap the walking steak. Use one hand to turn the walking stick while the other one cab just pulls the tape very gently and lets it wrap around the walking steak with no or very little creases. So after done, just go through the entire walking steak looking for little creases and then use your thumb to smooth them out. You can also, like, make a fist around the walking stick and squeeze it real hard Where there's creases. This will help the tape to form to the stake like you want Teoh and get those nasty little creases that will let the stain come in and and then we'll have to do more sanding hope got Get your gloves on. If you don't have cool purple ones, that's okay. So to put stain on, just get the tip of your fingers what was staying? And then we're going to start rubbing it very thoroughly into the wood, preventing dripping. Imagine that you're gained the stain into every little poorer in the wood, wanting it to absorb as much of the stain as possible. You can also rap like to your fingers between the tape rails that we have and cow work your way up, spreading it evenly, or you can do the little circles I showed you earlier. Do this all the way to the top. Also, make sure to get right up next to the edge of our tape barrier. So set the walking stick on our little cardboard box platforms. Set a water tape between the walking stick in the wall. Uh, replace your hammer at the bottom so it didn't slip. Let dry two hours to one full day. So if you have a little bald spot, don't worry. Just get you tip. Get a little stain on and dab dab dab. Next, take the side with no stain on it and just dab it a little bit more. No more bold spot. So after weighing 20 minutes after tree in your bald spots on your walking stick, it's now time to take off the tape and reveal the wonderful stripe. And for this, there's really no trick. Just pull it off slowly and carefully. It just do it like you see here. Just take the tape and pull downward very slowly, and there's really no trick. Just be careful. If you have some tape residue left, just drop it off your finger. There's no special trick for this either. So if there's a drip, use the edge of your sandy sponge or fold your same paper into a square until nice and clean. So just sand and rub and tell clean like this. I'm Caleb. Thank you so much for watching and I hope to see you and the next video, but I
9. Glossing to make it shiny: Hey, guys, my name is Caleb, and welcome back to my class. So today I'm gonna show you how to varnish how to get this beautiful, glossy look. Is that nice? Also, you can combine it with some stain and create these beauties. Mm. Pretty nice, huh? Well, let's get started right now. So get a damp and dry paper towel or cloth and wipe the stick down thoroughly with both. Um, we do this because if we left all those icky particles on the glass, one stick to well and the fans would be very rough. And we want the face to be very smooth. So get a cardboard box, tape the surface so the walking stick doesn't stick to the car board when you gloss it, said a grocery bank on top, and then tape over the surface of it. Now you can put the gloss on your walking stick without having to worry about slopping. Now get a paint can opener or hammer and just gently go around prying up the edges. If you don't do this gently, you could ruin the lead and then your glass could dry up. So a neat trick is to tape all around the can. So when you're glossing airbrushing, things can get messy. And so when you slop, you can just tear off the taping. There's no clean up. So get your gloves on and use a couple fingers to get the gloss. You want dio a little bit at the time and then just start smearing on the walking stick. Then you're going to make a fist, starting towards the bomb of the walking stick, and then you're slowly cut of working your way up, moving your fist up and down again. You're gonna make a fist around the walking stick. You're moving it up and down, spreading the gloss evenly and a little bit out of time. And also, when you're doing this, try to move fairly quickly. You don't have to move too fast, as you can see here, just trying to move about as fast as I'm going here. Because varnish starts to get sticky, uh, pretty quickly, and it's her to move it around that way and two guest smooth surface. So just try to move fairly quickly about how fast they're moving here and make sure, especially when you're like doing the bomb of this. You use this especially a little time amount, because it really doesn't need a lot. Now, one thing you want watch for the entire time you're doing. This is these little droplets of gloss. If you see these, nobody guilt. Just rub him back into the stick and you're all good to go. And now the surface of your walking stick is nice and smooth once again. So once you've made it almost to the top, we're not going to code it yet with Gloss. Instead, we're gonna leaning up against a wall set on our cardboard, uh, board that we made earlier. And it's a hammer at the end of the walking steak so the walking stick doesn't slip on you . We're gonna let it dry for 30 to 45 minutes. So get a cotton swab in terror mostly Contin off both ends. This will be our tool for spraying the varnish inside the whole of the wrist strap. So get that Khan swab, dip it just a little bit, and now swirl it around in the hole and just world around. So it's nice even coat inside and then flip it around and do our site in a swirl, swirl, swirl and then you'll have some drips of gloss. So just just rub that back in just for up that back into the stick. Next, you want checker work and we will make sure there's no drips inside. You see how this is really smooth looking inside. That's how we want it. Now if there's a couple of drips, just rub it right back in. So now it's time to do the top end of the walking steak. And for this you're just going to use a little bit of gloss for this, like a very little bit, just like we did with the bottom. But in my case, however, I have lots of cracks in it. So what you're gonna want do is kind of drip it in the cracks, and you're gonna want to rub it out, rub it back into the walking stick, and you're going to be really generous with this. Get both the side of the cracks and on top where they are so we won't hold the walking stick upside down. So the excess ah, loss can drip kind of out the cracks because the we want Phil them, we also want some of the access to drip out, you know, so it's nice and smooth still. So, like before, place your walking stick up against the wall except make sure the part we just did is facing the ground. So place a hammer or something heavy at the end of the walking stick again so it doesn't go anywhere on you and let it dry 2 to 4 hours after the glosses dried, gets in paper and fold it and use it just like the Sandys Bunches. This is really nice, because, unlike most saying papers, it won't ruin the finish. L. A. Just without the gloss. After you've done this, Repeat all the steps I've shown you about three times and you're all done. Congratulations out. Time for the risk trip. If you're using Pair, Accord or any court that will melt or string simply light each end until it's nice and melty. This will prevent unraveling assembly, plus your string through all you do to tie a knot. Let's take the string cross over your fingers so ends are pointing down. Take it over and then under and then through the little hole that we created and just tightening your done sure to push that full buttons that you could be up to date and be the 1st 1 to know about new posts and contests again. I'm Caleb. Thank you for watching. And make sure to post your work when you're done. And the Project gallery. I love to see it by guys.
