1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi friends, how are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience to be successful with this project. I will guide students step-by-step through all the steps that they need to take. Today, we are going to be creating this cute little gnome. And this cute gnome lives right here in this tree, in this little tree house. So I hope that you have a lot of fun with this project. Let's get started. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a paintbrush. You will also need a colorable with clean water. You will need either a black oil pastel or a black crayon. Either one will work and you will need a paper towel. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials. And I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Gnome Design: In this step we are going to draw our design. So let's get started. What we're going to do is we're going to take a look at our piece of paper. And I want you to remember that we're going to try to fill up our whole, entire space on our piece of paper with our design, we're going to have a little Gnome. And if we can fit a little house for the Gnome right here on this side or on this side, That's what we're going to do. But the main focus is going to be a Gnome. The Gnome is going to live in a forest. So what you'll want to do is pick up your crayon or your Oil Pastel. I'm going to be using Oil Pastel. We're going to go to about the middle of our piece of paper and we're going to make a slightly curved line like this. Okay, it's not going to be giant, but it's not going to be super small. Alright, that's going to be the bottom of the nomes hat. You know how gnomes have those really tall hats. This hat is going to be pretty tall. It's going to go almost to the top of the sheet of paper, but not quite. Let me show you what I mean. We're going to start about right here. We're going to come up and then we're going to curve down. Alright? So we're going to stop right there. And that's where we're going to make another line going from this line to this line. But watch what I do. I come up a curved down and I come over like this. Okay, so it's a really tall hut. Alright, now that we have our gnomes hat, we're going to come back and decorate that a little bit later. We're going to move on to underneath the nomes hat. And what we're going to do is we're going to come down just a little bit. And we're going to make an oval shape like this. That's going to be the nomes knows. Now we know where we're going to put our eyes on either side of the nomes nose. So you can make any size or any shape of I that you'd like to. I'm just going to make some round circles. I'm going to try to make sure that they're roughly the same size. They don't have to be perfect though. Alright, now that we have the nose and we have the eyes, we're going to make a beard. So the nomes beard is pretty big. Usually if you look at gnomes, they have pretty big beards. So what we're going to do is we're going to make the letter you go humming down underneath the nose, then coming back up. Alright. Now what we're going to do, this is the top part of the beard. So now what we're going to do is we're going to make a beard underneath. And I'm going to make this type of a beard. It's just kinda comes up in it. It's a little bit spiky actually. They're like little v's. So V, VB, V, and they're connected together. Now you can put a little mouse here or a little mouth here. Just decide where you'd like your mouth to go. I think I'd like my mouth. Maybe right here. Little mouth. Alright, now that we have hat, our nose, our eyes, our mouth, and our beard, we're going to make the body of our Gnome. Now, the nomes beard is pretty big, so it's going to be covering up a lot of the part of the body. So what we're going to do is we're just going to make a little tiny part of the body down here at the bottom. And I think that's it. That's all I'm going to do. So I just made a little line that came down and went over and then a little line that goes across your beard might be a little bit different from mine. So your little outfit underneath the clothing might be a little bit different. So coming out from the body, we're going to make for little lines and these are going to be the little legs for the Gnome. And then let's make some shoes. So we're going to close up that space, come up with a point. So we're coming along and then we go up with a curve line, and then we come back down and then close up. So that's a little shoe for the Gnome. How cute is that? So close up. Point T, little toe, and then close up. If you'd like to put a little bow or something at the tip of the shoe. You can go ahead and do that. I like to do that on my gnomes. Then if you'd like to add some stripes on the socks, I'm not going to be able to fit that many stripes because by little legs are pretty short. You might have longer or shorter legs. Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to make the nomes arms and I'm just going to decide where I want to put the arms. So I'm going to come out and then make little tiny part of the arm and a little hand. And then on this side, I think I want my arm to be reaching out this way. So two little lines that close a little hand. Then what I'm going to do is I'm going to make a little flower. I'm going to make my Gnome holding a little flower And then I am also going to make a leaf. How cute is that? Keep in mind. You need to be careful if you're using oil pastels because if you swish, if you touch your oil pastels, they might smear or smudge. So be very careful with that. Alright, so I have my Gnome drawing. I think that my Gnome is really cute. Your Gnome is going to look different from mine and that's a good thing. We want your artwork to look like your artwork. Now's the time that you can add a design to the hat. You can put stripes, you can put hearts, you can put flowers. You can add anything to your hat that you'd like. I think I'm going to add a little bell right here. And then I think I'm going to add a flower right here another day, easy. One to the hat of my Gnome. Sometimes I like to make stripes on my hat. But for this one, I think I'm just going to make a little daisy. Alright, now that we have our Gnome, what we're going to do is if we have space, which I do, I'm going to make a little house, a little door for my Gnome. And gnomes live in trees a lot of time. So I'm going to make a tree over here, little door for my Gnome to go inside of. If you don't have a lot of space over here, just do the best that you can. You might be able to put part of a door, or you might want to put flowers, or you might want to put some little insects. It's completely up to you. If you have room for a little house, then you can go ahead and make one as well if you'd like. So let me show you what I'm going to do. I'm going to start about right here and I'm going to come up. And then I'm going to come down like this to about the bottom of where my gnomes feet are. And then this is going to be the door for my gnomes house. I'm going to make a circle and then close that up. Actually it's semi-circle or an upside down U and then it's closed up at the bottom. Then I'm going to make a little doorknob. And then I think to add a little bit of decoration, I'm just going to make some lines like this. Okay, and then maybe I'll close that up, down here at the bottom. Now I'm going to make the tree that this little door opens into. So I'm just going to make a line coming up and then coming out like this. And remember, we don't need to make it perfect because it is a tree. So we want to add, for the trunk, we're going to add some little squiggly lines. Now what we're going to do is we're going to give an area for our Gnome to stand on. So just some, a little bit of lines so we can have him standing on the ground. Now, I have some space down here at the bottom. I'm trying to think of something that I want to put. I think that I am going to add just a little bit of grass. So I'm just going to add a little bit of grass that looks like this. That will just add a little bit more detail and interest to the bottom part of my drawing. Then if you'd like to add anything else into the sky, you can go ahead and do that. I think I'm happy with mine, so I think I'm going to stop right there. If there's anything else that you'd like to add at this time, you can go ahead and do that. Now. What we're going to do next is we are going to start painting our Design. And remember, if you have a little bit of oil pastels on your hands, you can always use your paper towel to get most of it off. All of it might not come off. But most of it well 3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we're going to add some watercolor paints to our Gnome and to our tree. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add a drop or two of water into each pan of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up the Paints so that they are easier for us to use. So I always suggest to my students to take this step because it really does help. Alright, now, that are Paints or softening up, Let's turn our attention to our design. So we have our Gnome, we have our tree. This is the house where the Gnome lives. And then we have our background, which is the sky and the grass. So we're just going to focus on the Gnome and the tree. So I'm going to paint my Gnome first. I am going to leave this area, this little beard. I'm going to leave that white. And I'm going to paint everything else. And then I'll paint the tree. Alright. So two Paint the face on a Gnome. I'm going to show you the color that I'm going to use and going to mix a couple of different colors together. But of course, you get to choose the color that you'd like for your gnomes face. Alright, I'm going to choose a little bit of orange and put it into my well, one of my wells, and then I'm going to choose a little bit of brown. I want this color to be pretty light so I can see the features. But like I said before, you get to choose the color that you'd like to have for your gnomes face. Alright, so I'm going to work on this painting. This, this color is also the color that I'm going to use for my nose little hands as well. So I have some tiny little hands here. You can barely even see them. They're so small. All right, for the nose on my Gnome, I'm going to add a little bit of pink to this color. And I want my nose to be pretty light, but I want it to be a little bit more pink than the actual skin. Alrighty. Next I'm going to Paint the hat. And I think I'm going to Paint the hat red, a lighter red. So I'm going to add more water than paint because I want the color to be pretty light. Remember if you'd like to have a more vibrant, brighter color, then you add more paint. If you, if you'd like to a softer color, then you add more water to your paint. So I'm going to go ahead and paint this hat red. Alrighty friends. So I have my hat painted red. I also painted the little tiny arms red and the outfit of my Gnome read as well. I'm going to paint my shoes brown. I think, I think that would be a cool color for my shoes. And then I'm also going to paint the flowers. Alrighty friends. So I'm finished painting my Gnome. And what I'm going to do next is I'm going to paint the tree and I'm going to paint this tree Brown, including the door. Alrighty friends. So I've painted the tree and I'm going to paint the door now, I've decided to add a little bit, a tiny bit of black to my brown paint because I want my door to be a little bit darker than my tree, so I want that to stand out a little bit more. I'm going to paint that a mixture of brown and black with just using a tiny bit of black. Because black is a very powerful color and so you don't need that much. Alrighty friends. So now I have my Gnome and I have my tree house painted. I'm really happy with the way that things have turned out so far. In the next step, we're going to Paint the Background 4. Step 3: Paint the Background: In this step we're going to Paint the Background. So let's get started. I'm going to start out by painting the sky and I'm going to paint the sky blue. And I'm going to paint this grass green. Remember, you can use any colors that you'd like to paint with. That is absolutely fine. So let's get started painting our background, including our sky and our grass, and then any other details that you have added. I'm going to speed up this video. See you can watch me and then you can get started on your own artwork. Alrighty friends. I'm finished painting my design. I hope that you had a lot of Fun with this project. I will see you next time.
