1. Class Introduction: Hi, I'm Kerrie, and I like to make fun art. And today, we're gonna create these cute pumpkins and a simple pattern in Adobe Illustrator. See you there. 2. How to create your first project: In this lesson, we're going to create a new project in Adobe Illustrator. On this screen, on the left, click on New File right there. This brings up the new document window, which shows you different presets that you can choose. We're going to come over here to Web, click on Web go to web Large 1920 by 1080 pixels. You can give it a name if you'd like. I just leave it as it is. Width will be at 19:20 pixels and the height, 1080 pixels. You want your color mode to be set at RGB, and you want to change the raster effects from screen 72 PPI to the higher 300 PPI. Then click Create. 3. Setting up the workspace: Adobe Illustrator has different workspaces that you can use that change the layouts of the toolbars, like the one you see over here on the left, and on the right, how the options look on the right. We're going to set ours up to Essentials Classic because that is great for a beginner. So you'll come up to the tool bar here at the top and go to Windows. And workspace and you'll change it to Essentials Classic by clicking on it. You can tell that it changed because the toolbar changed and then also the options on the right. And then also if you come back up to Windows workspace and Essentials Classic, you'll see that there is a checkmark where Essentials Classic is. Also, if you've used Essential Classic before and your toolbars are missing or not in alignment, you can come down here to reset Essentials Classic, and that will reset it back to what it looks like now. 4. Making a pumpkin shape: Let's create a cute pumpkin on the toolbar on the left. Come over to where your rectangle tool is, and you can click a right click and choose the lips tool. You can also press L on your keyboard. And then we want to click and drag on the artboard, just like that to create our Oval. We want to create two more of these, so we'll come over here to the selection tool, and then we can come back over here to our Oval and click and then press Option or Alt if you have a PC on your keyboard and click and drag, tip out there, and one more time, click and drag and then creates all three of them with your selection tool still selected, you want to select all three, click on your Artboard and drag down to select all three. Then come over here to the Pathfinder and press Unite to unite all three of those together. You can also go up to Windows and Pathfinder to unite it that way. Here, I think it's a little too tall. So if you click on the point in the middle and then just drag it down you get it exactly where you want it, that will create your first cute pumpkin shape. 5. Coloring the pumpkin: Let's give our pumpkin a little color. Right now, you can see it has a white fill and a black stroke. We want to change the fill, so we'll double click on the fill. Then we can use the slider to slide down to the orange colors. We can pick an orange color that we like and click Okay. Now we want to remove the black stroke so we come over here to where the stroke is and click on it. And then right below there where it says none, click on that, and that makes the stroke go away. And we have our first color for our pumpkin. 6. Creating a pumpkin stem: Make a super easy stem for our pumpkin. First, let's zoom in so we can see everything a little clear. On the toolbar on the left, you'll click on your Zoom tool, then come over to your artboard and click about where you want to zoom in. Now, what we do is we come over here to the toolbar on the left, and we click on the Rectangle Tool. And then we click and drag to create the shape we want. Move it into place by our pumpkin. And then we want to select one of the points. So I'm going to come over here to Direct Selection Tool. I'm going to click on this blue point right here and then just click and drag it where I want it. Next, we want to click and drag over the entire pumpkin so you can see that there are two shapes. We want to get rid of this shape in between. So it's a little cleaner. So what we do is we come over here to the tool bar on the left. And we want to click on this Shape Builder tool. Then we come over here to our pumpkin and we select it, and then we move up until it selects both of those options, just like that, and we have our pumpkin, and we have our stem. 7. Creating another stem option: To give our pumpkin stem a little bit more shape if you want, you can come over here to your Curvature tool and you can click in the center here and click and drag up, create little points here and here to help you to navigate, and then you can just create a cute shape by changing all the options, and all the points like that. Then we want to come over here to the toolbar on the left and go to your smooth tool to smooth it out just a little. So it creates a good shape. Then click the selection tool over here in the toolbar on the left, so we can move it down. And then we can select everything. Go over to toolbar on the left and click your Shape Builder tool, click and drag, so it creates this as one shape, and your stems one shape. 8. Curvature tool pumpkin stem shape: Another option, so you can create a cute rounded shape stem is to use the Curvature tool. So on your toolbar on the left, right here, you'll see the Curvature tool and you can click on it. And you'll see if I come over here to my artboard. If I click, it creates a point, and then wherever I click, I go next, and then I click, it creates another point. And then if I move my mouse down and then click, it follows. So you can do that to create whatever shape you want. So I'm going to go ahead and do that and create a little rounded stem. Just like that. And then I'm going to come over here to my smooth tool. I'm going to smooth that out just like that. Then I'm going to come over here to my selection tool and click on that. So it Selexis, and I can bring it down onto my pumpkin. Wherever I want my stem to be there looks cute. And then I'm going to go ahead and create these into two different shapes. So if I click and drag over both of them, you can see that this one's going into this and I don't like that, so I'm going to come over here to my toolbar. I'm going to go to my Shape Builder tool. I'm going to click on the pumpkin, and then I'm going to move my mouse up until it reaches that piece. And then now I have a pumpkin that's one shape and my stem that's one shape. 9. Creating leaves: To create the leaf design for a pumpkin, we're going to come over here to the toolbar on the left, and we want to make sure that the lips tool is selected. Then click and drag to create the shape of our leaf. Then we'll come over here to the toolbar on the left, and we're going to click on the direct selection tool. Then we're going to come over here to this blue point right here and click on it. When I do that, you can see up here, it creates these handle options, and we want to click this first one, convert selected anchor point to corner. So we're going to do that. We want to do it on the other side, click right there, and then come back up here on our toolbar and click this convert selected anchor point to corner again. And that creates our leaf shape. And then we can click on this shape, press Option or Alt on our keyboard, click and drag, and that will create another shape for us. 10. Pumkin line design: Let's add a little design to our pumpkin. On the toolbar on the left, we're going to come over here to our line segment tool. Then we're going to click and drag. That creates one line with no fill and no stroke. We want to add a stroke, so we'll come over to the stroke and double click. Then we can come over here to our color picker, bring it down to the orange area, and then select a color that we think matches really well with our pumpkin and press okay. I'd like this line to be curved a little, so I'm going to come over here to the toolbar on the left, and I'm going to select my curvature tool. Click once right in the center of that line and then click and drag and that creates the curve that I want. But if you zoom in just a little, you can see that that line doesn't have rounded ends, and I would like it to. So you just want to make sure that it's selected, and then you can come over here to your stroke. And then if you don't see these options, you can click these three lines here and it will say show options. Just like that. Now you want to choose your cap to be the round cap in your corner to be the round join. And then if you look, you can see that now it's got a rounded edge. So now we want to make a copy of this. I'm going to zoom out just a little to do that if you go to your toolbar on the left and you click on your Zoom tool, and then you press on the option or Alt key on your keyboard, and then click it a couple times. It will allow you to zoom out. Now you can go over to your selection tool, click on the line, then click Option or Alt on your keyboard. Click and Drag, and that creates another line. Then you can come over here to option, transform and reflect, just press Okay and it creates another line for the other side. 11. Coloring the stem: I'd like my stem to be the same color as the lines that I've created. So to do that, I'm going to make sure my selection tool is selected. I'm going to select my stem, and then I'm going to come over here to the toolbar on the left, and I'm going to choose the eyedropper tool. Then I'm going to come over and select the line and click just like that, and it does exactly what the line is doing. It's creating a stroke with no fill, and I want to change that so it's a fill and no stroke. So to do that, I come over to the toolbar on the left, and you'll see this button that says swap fill and stroke, and I click that and you can see now I have a fill and no stroke for my stem. 12. Coloring the leaves: Let's give our leaves some color. Make sure your selection tool selected and then click and drag to select both of your leaves. Then come over here to your fill and double click. You want to go over to your color picker and go up to the greens, so you can select a green color that you think might work with your design. I think something like that, and click Okay. Now you can select each one and move it into place wherever you would like it. I think I'll move mine there and here. And as you can see, the leaves are below my line. So to fix that so that they're on top, you click the leaf that's like that, and then you right click and choose arrange, bring to front. And now my leaf is on top of my line. 13. Adding another fun design for the pumpkin: Let's create another fun design for our pumpkin. On the toolbar on the left, go ahead and click on the Curvature tool. Then you can come over here to where your leaf is and click and then move down and click, and then just create a cute little design just like that. And it's okay if it's not perfect because what we're going to do next is we're going to come over here to the toolbar on the left, and we're going to choose our smooth tool, and then you can click and drag to smooth that out just like so. And as you can see, it had the square ends and we want the round ends. So we're going to come over here to our stroke. And we're going to give it the round cap, and then the corner, we want it to be the round join. For that, another fun thing that you can do is to use the Width tool. If you come over here to the toolbar on the left and you click on this Width tool, then you can click any of these points and then click and drag it and it will change the width just like so. That creates you a cute little design, and we want to create another one. So we'll highlight this one. Press Option Alt on our keyboard, click and drag to create another one, and then we'll just change its direction by hovering over and then clicking till we get the direction just as we want. And I like that. And there you have it. 14. Preparing design to make a pattern: To make it easier, when we do create our pattern, I want to go ahead and change the strokes that I have to fill. So I'm going to go ahead and click here and click this other line here. As you can see, it's a stroke with no fill, and I'm going to come up here to Object, Expand. I'm going to take off the checkmark for fill because it's just a stroke, and we're going to click Okay. And you can see that that changed it so that now it's got no stroke, and it's got to fill. For these here, we want to do something similar, but we'll click both of those. And then we'll go appeared object, and we'll do expand appearance. And that does the same thing. It changes it from a stroke to a fill. Now I can highlight everything and then press Command G on my keyboard to group everything, or you can go to object and group. 15. Creating a second pumpkin: Now that we have one pumpkin, let's make another. Make sure that you have your selection tool selected, and then click and drag over your first pumpkin. Press Option or Alt on your keyboard, click and drag, and that creates a second pumpkin. Now I want to change this pumpkin up just a little bit. So first, I'm going to highlight this pumpkin. I'm going to come over here to object and ungroup because I'd like to get rid of this stem. We're going to delete that stem. I'm going to come over here to our rectangle tool. I'm going to create a rectangle. I'm going to click and drag just like so, and bring this down. I will right click, arrange back. That way, it's in the back. I'm going to remove these two little designs, and we can change the direction of our leaf. If we want. And as you can see, this leaf is behind our line here. We don't like that. We right click arrange front. We can also make the leaves a little bigger if we'd like. So you can click the first leaf, then click the second leaf, and then click and drag to make the leaves a little bigger, just like so. Now, to change the color, we can click on this pumpkin here, come over here to our fill, find another color of orange that we think might look cute. See. I like that one and click Okay, and then we can change the color of our leaves. And of our lines if we'd like, highlight both of them. Go over here to our fill, select a new color and click Okay. We can also change the color of our stem if we'd like by clicking it, then pressing on our eyedropper tool and clicking on our line, so it creates the same color. Just like that. Then we can go ahead and highlight everything. And then command G. That way we have our second pumpkin and both our individual shapes that you can move around just like soap. 16. Creating a pattern: Let's create a new pattern for our pumpkins. Go over here to your selection tool to select both your pumpkins and come over here to object, pattern make. It'll give you a message letting you know that your pattern has been added to the swatches panel. Press Okay. Then you can see over here, you have your new pattern options, your pattern options. And you can see the copies here just shows you a copy of what your pattern is going to look like. I usually change it to seven by five so I can see more copies. Next, you can come over here to the tool bar on the left and press on your Zoom tool. As you can see, it's got a little plus in the center. But if you press Option, it or Alt on your keyboard. It changes it to a minus sign, and then you can click and then click again. That way you can see your pattern really well. You want to go ahead and go to your selection tool so you can select one of your pumpkins and click and drag it into place where you want it. Then you can change the tile types. There's different tile types, and I usually stick with brick by row or brick by column. But let's go ahead and try brick by row. And then you can see that this stem is really close to this pumpkin. So what we can do is come over here to the width and the height. And if you want to maintain the width and the height proportions. You have this button here that allows you to do that. If you do not want to do that, you just click it. But we do want to do that, so we'll keep it, and we'll click into our width. And then on your keyboard, you press your up arrow and it will change the width and the height at the same time until you get it where you want it, and then I'm going to adjust my pumpkin just a little bit more now that I've done that. So it's more evenly spaced. And once I get it to where I like it, I press done. Then you can click your two pumpkins again and move them off of your artboard. We'll come over here to your rectangle tool, and we'll double click. And we want to create a new rectangle that's the same width as your artboard, which if you remember is 1920 by 1080. Click Okay. Then we want to align this to our artboard. Up here, you can see your line tools or you can go to Window and Align and you want to set align horizontal line center and your vertical line center that will align that rectangle onto your artboard. Now you can see that you have a white fill and no stroke. If you come over here to your swatches and find your pattern and click once, it will add that pattern into your rectangle. 17. CLASS PROJECT: Class project, make a cute pumpkin and turn it into a pattern. And don't forget to check out the resources section where I have a project guide and some color sheets.
