1. MAIN INTRODUCTION: Hi. My name's Kerri. I'm an independent artist who creates illustrations and service pattern designs. In this class, we're going to keep it simple by using basic shapes such as circles and rectangles and triangles to create cute art like snowmen and pizzas and ice cream. By the end of the class, you'll be able to create a pattern using one of your designs for your own projects. Can't wait to see you in the class. 2. Starting our first Project File: In this lesson, you will learn how to create a new project in Adobe Illustrator. Starting here on this screen, go ahead and click on the New File button right here. This will bring up a window with different document presets that you can choose from. We'll click on web. Then we'll choose web Large 1920 by 1080 pixels. You see here width 1920 height 1080. Come down here to color mode, RGB, and your Raster Effects, you can set that to high 300 PPI. And click Create. Next, we will create a background for our Artboard. 3. Setting up our Workspace and creating our background: This lesson, we'll set up our workspace and create a simple background for our artboard. First, I'm going to go up to the top menu and we'll select window. Then choose workspace and make sure that you have a checkmark on Essentials Classic. This just makes a layout a little easier to follow, especially if you're a beginner. Next, we want to go to the toolbar on the left and click on our Rectangle Tool. Come over to our Artboard and double click. We want our width to be 1920 and our height to be 1080, the same as our artboard. Then we click Okay. Now we want to center this onto the artboard, so you can come up here to the line here or you can go up to Windows and a line and you can align your objects horizontal align center and vertical line center. Then you can move this out of the way, or you can press the X to get rid of it altogether. Now, if you look over here to the left at the bottom, you'll see you have a fill and a stroke on this background. We want to get rid of the black stroke, so we click on that, and then we click this button right here that says none. Now we have no stroke on our background. Next, we want to change the color of our fill, so we'll double click on the fill. Come over here to the slider and we can slide up to pick a color that we like. I want a blue color, and then I'll press this little dot here and move it over till I get a blue color that I like, and then I'll press Okay. Next, we want to lock our background. So what we can do is we come over here to object. And lock selection. This locks the background to our artboard so it can't move. And on the right here where you see it says layers, you can click there or you can come back up here to the window and go down to layers. Click this button, this little icon here. Then you can see right here where we've created our background, it's locked. You can click it to unlock it, and click it again to lock it. Next, we will create our Snowman. 4. Creating the Snowman Body: Creating this snowman's body is super fun. First, we come over to the toolbar on the left, find a rectangle tool, and instead, we want to change it to the lips tool. Come over to our artboard. We can press the Shift key on our keyboard and click and drag to make our first circle. You can see in the toolbar here on the left that you have no stroke, and you have a blue fill. So let's change that. Double click on the fill, and we want to move this over until we get to a color that we prefer and click Okay. Next, we want to go over to the selection tool on the toolbar on the left. We'll click our first circle. Then we'll press Option or Alt. If you have a PC, click and drag and click and drag one more time. Next, we want to change the shape of each circle just a little. So as you can see, you can hover your mouse over these squares, and it's letting you know that you can modify the circle. So we'll make this one just a little bit bigger and maybe a little bit wider there. Put it in place, and then we'll get the second one here. We'll do the same thing, giving them a little bit different shape. We'll keep this one the same. Next, we want to turn all three of these circles into one shape. So with your selection tool still selected, click on your artboard and click and drag over the three circles. Then you can come over here to the right where it says Pathfinder, you can click Unite there, or you can come up to window. Go to Pathfinder and Unite. Now, all three circles are in one shape. Next, let's give our Snowman some eyes. 5. Adding the Eyes for our Snowman: Let's create some eyes for our Snowman. On the toolbar on the left, scroll over to your lips tool. Come over to your artboard. Press the shift key on your keyboard, then click and drag to make one of your eyes. You can see in the toolbar that your eye has no stroke but has a white fill, and we want to change that so we double click. Then we select our color dot here and we move it all the way to the black and click Okay. Next, we want to duplicate this circle. We come over here to the toolbar on the left and we hit selection. Come over to our circle and select it. Then press Option or Alt. If you have a PC, then click and drag to make a second I. Then we can select both of these Is because we have the selection tool still selected. Come over to artboard, click and drag. That selects both of the eyes. Then you can click one of the Is to help you to move it. In place. Next, let's give our eyes some highlights. Come over to the toolbar on the left and click your Ellipse tool again. Con your artboard, press the shift key, click and drag to make a tiny little circle. Then this time, we want to change the fill color to white, so you double click. Move your color picker all the way over to the white and click Okay. This circle is a little small, so we're going to use our Zoom tool, which is on the toolbar on the left at the bottom here, you can see it. Then you come over to where you want to zoom in and you can click it a couple of times so then you can see. Then come over to the toolbar on the left and press your selection tool, select your new highlight. Then click Option or Alt on your keyboard. Click and Drag, and that makes a second highlight. Then we can zoom out by going to the toolbar on the left and clicking on your Zoom tool. Now, if you hit Option or Alt, if you have a PC, you can see how it changes it from a plus to a minus. You can click a few times. So that you can see your artboard better. Go over to the selection tool. Then come over to one of your dots and click and then drag it over on top of your eye where you would like it. Do the same thing with the other one. Now we can move them into place by pressing the Zoom tool and the toolbar on the left, zooming in just a little more. Then on the toolbar on the left, click your selection tool, then you can come and select your e, highlight and put it just where you would like it. 6. Creating the Nose for our Snowman: Making the nose first, Noman is super easy. On the toolbar on the left, where your Ellipse tool is, we want to change that to the polygon tool. Then on your artboard, you can double click, and you want to change the sides to three so you can move up or down until you get to three and then click Okay. This creates our triangle. Now you can see on the toolbar on the left that you have no stroke, but you have a white fill. We want to change that fill, so we double click. Then we can change you can click the slider and move it to a color that you would like. I want mine to be orange, and then we select our color that we would like and press Okay. Now, if you come over here to your selection tool, you can click it. And then if you hover your mouse over these points, you can see how it changes letting you know that you are okay to rotate. So once you see that, you can rotate where you want it. And then we can also change its shape by going to the points and then pulling, pushing, or dragging to get the perfect shape that you would like for your snowman. And then you can move it onto your snowman just like that. 7. Creating the Smile for our Snowman: Let's give our Snowman a smile. On the toolbar on the left, we want to click the Line Segment tool. So click it. Come over to your Snowman about where you would like your smile, and then press the shift key on your keyboard and click and drag. About where you'd like your smile to be. And as you can see, from the toolbar on the left, our line has no stroke and no fill. I want to add a stroke, so I'm going to come up here to the top where it says stroke right here. Press the up arrow a few times until I get to two points, just like that. Next, we want to come over to our toolbar, and this time, we're going to click on the curvature tool. Then come back over to our line, and about in the center, we click once, then we click it again and then pull down, and that creates our smile. Next, we can click over here on the Zoom tool and then zoom in so I can show you what the ends of the smile look like, but I want to make those round. So to do that, I'm going to come up here to window, then go to stroke. Here on the right, there's these three lines, and if you click it, it says Show Options, so we want to do that. Then for our cap, we want it to be this middle one, the round cap and a corner, we'll do it as well. And now you can see that our smile has a rounded look to it on each end. Next, we will work on the cheeks. 8. Creating the Cheeks for our Snowman: I like adding cheeks to my Snowman. To do that on the toolbar on the left, go ahead and change to the Ellipse tool again. Come over to your Snowman, press Shift on your keyboard, then click and drag to create the size check you would like. Here we have a black stroke and no fill, so we'll go ahead and remove the stroke, change it to none. Then we go over to the fill, double click. I'm going to choose my slider to choose a more pink color. Then I will select the color of the cheek that I would like. I think I like that one. I'll click Okay. Then we can create a duplicate for the other side. So we come over to the toolbar on the left and click our selection tool and come select our circle, press Option or Alt on our keyboard, click and drag. To create the second cheek. Next, we'll create some buttons. 9. Creating the buttons for our snowman: To make our buttons, first, I would like to zoom out my Snowman. To do that, I'm going to come over here to the toolbar on the left, come down to the Zoom tool. Then I'm going to press Option or Alt, if you have a PC on your keyboard and click a few times so I can see my Snowman. Next, I want to come over here to the toolbar on the left, and I'm going to click on the lips tool, right there. Then come over to your artboard, press the Shift key, then click and drag. To make a circle. We want to make four smaller circles, we'll come over here to the Lips tool again, make sure it's selected. Then press Shift on your keyboard, click and drag to make another circle. This circle, we want it to be white, so we'll come over here to the fill and double click. Then we'll go over here to the white and click Okay. Next, we want to go over to our selection tool so then we can make sure that we're selecting our smaller circle. Then we want to press Option or Alt. If you have a PC, click and drag. Click and drag again and click and drag again. Now we can move each one of these over to our bigger circle. So I'll just click and drag it over, click and drag it over and same with these. And then on my beer circle, I'll just kind of move it around till I get it exactly where I want it. Mm. I think about right there is good. Now we want to go up to the toolbar on the left and make sure we have our selection tool. Then on the artboard, we click and drag to select all four of these. Then we go over here to option and group. And that groups all of those together so you can move them around. Now we want to make a few more of these. So well, first, we can move this button where we want it on our Snowman. Then we press Option or Alt on our keyboard, then click and drag, click and drag. And click and drag. There you have your buttons. 10. Creating the Arms for our snowman: To give our Snowman some arms, we want to come over to the line segment tool here on the toolbar on the left. Come over to your Snowman, press shift on your keyboard and click and drag up just a little to create your arm. As you can see, this creates the line, but if you look over here on your toolbar, there's no stroke, and there's no fill. To fix this, we want to go up to stroke here at the top, and then click the up arrow a few times. Let's go to two points. That creates the beginning of your arm. We want to go ahead and create two smaller lines, with your line segment tool still selected, come over. You can press Shift on your keyboard if you want. Click and Drag, and on the other side, click and drag. And then what we want to do is we want to with our selection tool selected over here on the toolbar on the left, we want to go and select all of these objects right there for our arm. Then come over to the top and choose Object. And group. And that will group that arm so that then what we can do is we can select it, and then press Option or Alt on your keyboard, click and drag, and then we can move the other arm to the other side. Then you can hover your mouse close to the points and then click and drag to turn your arm just as you would like it on your snowman. 11. Creating the scarf for our snowman: To create our scarf, we'll want to come over to the toolbar on the left and click the Line Segment tool. On your keyboard, press the shift key. Then click and drag where you want your scarf. Now we want to change our stroke because you can see here, it's got a black stroke. We want to change that up here to be about 20 points. Next, we want to go over here where it says uniform and change this. Come down to where it says Width Profile five. Now you can see that this beginning of our scarf is a stroke only. We want to change that, so we want to come up here and go to object expand appearance. Now, what that has done is it's changed it so that now it has no stroke and it's just got to fill. Next, we want to finish our scarf by coming over here to the rectangle tool, clicking on it. Then you can click and drag to create the size that you want. Next, you can come over here to your curvature tool from the toolbar on the left, then come back over here to your scarf, and you can adjust your scarf by clicking and dragging just as you would like. Next, we want to come over here to the selection tool and select that so that then we can come over here and hover our mouse over by these points until we can get it so that we can rotate it, and we're going to change its direction just a little. Then I'm going to click here and just move it over just a little. Next, we want to make a duplicate of this so we can press Option or Alt on our keyboard and then click and drag to make another one, and then you can hover over the points and then click and drag to create it just like that. Next, we want to take these three objects that we just created this, this and this, and we want to make it one object. To do that, you'll click on one and then you'll press your **** key, click on the other and the other. Oops. There we go. Then you want to come over here to Window, Pathfinder and unite. Then you can X out of the Pathfinder. Now what we can do is we want to change this black fill to a different color. So we have a different colored scarf, so we'll come over here to fill. Double click. I want mine to be a blue color, so you can just select a blue color that you would like. I think I want mine to be I like that. And then we'll click Okay. 12. Creating the Pizza: Making a pizza is super easy. I'm going to show you how to do it now. On the toolbar on the left, you'll want to come over here to your polygon tool that's over by your rectangle or your lips. Click on polygon. Then come over to your artboard and double click. You want your sides to be three so you can move up or down until you see three, and then click Okay. Now this creates your triangle, and you want to come over here to the toolbar on the left and find your stroke. We want to go ahead and get rid of that stroke there and click none. Then we want to go over to the fill, double click here, and we want to change that color so we will click on this here until we can get to a color section that we like, and then we can click on this dot and move it over until we find a color that we want and click Okay. Then we come over to the toolbar on the left and click the selection tool. Come over to your triangle, and if you hover over the white square on where your point is here, you can then see that your mouse changes so that you can rotate. So once you see that rotation, then go ahead and click and drag, and you can put your triangle just where you want it. I want mine there for now. And next, we will create the crest. 13. Creating our first Crust for our Pizza: I like to make my crust a couple different ways. First, we'll come over here to our rectangle tool, and we can come over to the artboard, then click and drag. Next, we want to go over here to our selection tool. Then we can hover our mouse over one of the points so then we can rotate and rotate this onto pizza just as we would want it. And then you can see these dots right here. You can click those and click in, and that creates rounded edges for your crust. Next, you want to come over here to the fill color, and we will change that. You can click the slider up until you get to a color that you would like. I like that one and click Okay. In our next lesson, I'll show you how to make another fun crust. 14. Creating another fun crust for our Pizza: Here's another fun way to make a pizza crust. On the tool bar on the left, this time, we're going to click on your curvature tool. Come over to your pizza, and about right here, go ahead and click. Then you can click again. And then as you move your mouse up and around, you can keep clicking, and you can see how it creates a fun curvy direction for you. And then you want to make sure to click the last dot there. And so it creates a cute, fun crest. Then you can come over here to where your pencil tool usually is, and there's an option called smooth and you can click it. And you can tell it's ready to smooth by the little blue squares there. Then you can click on this here and this slider and you can slide it up and down to get the perfect shape that you would like. I like mine just like that. And then I'm going to click on my selection tool again on the toolbar on the left so that then I can just move my crest right into place. 15. PIzza Toppings New: Let's give our pizza some toppings. On the toolbar on the left, we'll click the lips tool. Come over to your pizza, press Shift on your keyboard, then click and drag to create a pepperoni, but we want to change the color here, so we go over to our fill and double click. We want to change our slider to go to the red, and then we can find a color that we like and click Okay. Now we go back to the toolbar on the left and we click our selection tool, select our circle, press the option key or Alt if you have a PC on your keyboard, click and drag, and then click and drag again to make three pepperonis. Next, we can make some cheese, so we come over here to the toolbar on the left. We go to our rectangle tool. Then we come over to our pizza, and we click and drag. On this one, I want to zoom in just a little, so we come over to the toolbar on the left and click our Zoom. Then we want to come over here to the toolbar on the left and click the direct selection tool. That creates those little circles, and then we click one and then click in, and then that creates the rounded edges for us. Now we want to change this to a yellow color, so we come over to the fill and double click, and then you can change your slider to go to the yellows, and then you can change this to a color that you would like for you cheese. I think I like that one. I'm going to click Okay. Now we'll come over here to our selection tool, so then we can select our cheese. And then we press Option or Alt. If you have a PC, click and drag. Then you can hover over the white point to show you that it's okay to rotate, and then you can rotate it just a little. Then we'll select it again and then press Option or Alt on your keyboard. Click and Drag. Then we can rotate make one more, click and drag and rotate. And I think there needs to be one maybe over there, so we will select this one, Options or Alt on our keyboard. And then we can click and drag. I think I want one more right here. I needs it. So we select this one, Option or Alt on our keyboard. Click and Drag and then rotate. 16. Creating the Cone for our Ice cream: Let's create the cone for our ice cream. On the toolbar on the left, we come over here to the polygon tool and click it. Then come over to our artboard and we double click. This gives us our options, and we want our sides to be three so you can click the up or the down until you get to three and then click Okay. We want to rotate this so you'll want to come over here to your selection tool and then hover your mouse over by the point and then click and drag to change the direction. Then I want to change the size and the shape a little. So I'm going to click and then drag in this point here. I'm going to do the same thing here to make it a little shorter and then click in here. And I think I like that. And so then we want to change its color. So we'll click here on our fill, and I want to change it to a brown color. I like that, and I'm going to click Okay. Next, we'll give our cone some design. 17. Creating the Design for our Ice Cream Cone: To create the design for our cone, we want to come over here to the toolbar and click the rectangle tool. Then come over to your artboard and we want to make a fairly long thin rectangle. And we want to change its color. So we'll come over here to the fill and double click. We can click this little dot here and then move it till we get a color that we like. I like that one, and I'll click Okay. Next, we want to rotate this, we'll come over to our selection tool on the toolbar on the left. Then come over to our rectangle, and then we hover and once you see that it's ready to rotate, you click and drag to rotate, and then you can click it to move it onto our cone. Next, we want to make a few copies of this so we can make sure that this one's highlighted, then press the option or Alt key on your PC. Click and Drag, click and drag. Click and Drag. One more time. Here we go. Now I want to select all of these rectangles that we just created. So I'm going to click the first one, press the shift key on my keyboard, then press each one. So each one is highlighted. Then come up to the top and we're going to go to object and group. That groups them all together so you can move them all at once, just like that. Now we want to press Option on our keyboard or Alt. If you have a PC, then click and drag to make a second one. Then we want to rotate this one, so we come over to where the point is, and when it tells us it's ready, we can just click it and drag it and then put it on top of our cone just like that. Now we want to highlight everything. And then we can come over to the toolbar on the left, and this time we want to select the Shape Builder tool. On the Shape Builder tool, we want to then press the option key on our keyboard and it changes it from a plus to a minus. Then you can click and drag to remove any pieces that you do not need for your cone. So I'm going to do that now. I'm clicking and dragging down to remove each piece. But I don't want on my cone on each side. And you want to be really careful and look really close to make sure you get each piece and that you didn't miss anything. There's a little piece right there. I'm going to go ahead and click that and same here. Click those. I think there might be one up here we can check by going over to the tool bar and clicking our Zoom and zooming in. And yes, there is one there, so we will go ahead and head our Shape Builder tool, press our option key again, so we get the little minus and get rid of that. There's one right here. We will do the same. And there's one right here. Next, we can group this entire thing together. So we make sure that we have the selection tool selected, and then we click and drag over the entire cone. Come up to option and group. Next, we'll make our ice cream. 18. Creating our Ice Cream: To create our ice cream, we'll go over to the toolbar on the left, and we'll click on the Ellipse Tool. Come over to our artboard, press the Shift key on your keyboard and click and drag. Then come over to the left toolbar again. Click the selection tool. Then move your ice cream into place. Now we'll come over to the fill and give it a new color. We'll select this circle and move it all the way up till we get to the white color and click Okay. Now we want to duplicate this, so making sure that you still have your selection tool selected. Click on your circle, then press Option, and then click and drag and then click and drag one more time. To create your ice cream. These are three separate shapes, and we want to create it into one shape, so you'll click the first one, then press the shift key, click the second, and then the third. Then come over to the Pathfinder tool and click Unite or come up to Windows, Pathfinder and unite. Then you can click the X to remove the Pathfinder tool. Then we want the ice cream to be behind your cone, click on your cone. Right click arrange to front. Now you can select both of these. Go up to object and group, and now you can adjust the size. You can press the shift key on your keyboard and select one of the corner points, click and drag just like that. Next, we'll create our candy. 19. Creating Candy for our Ice cream: To make some candies for our ice cream, we'll come over to the toolbar on the left. And we want to select the lips tool then come over to our artboard. We'll press Shift on our keyboard, then we'll click and drag to make a circle. We want to change its fill color, so we'll double click on our fill, and then we'll move our color picker up, and then we will move our circle till we find a color that we like. I like that one, and then we'll click Okay. We'll go back up to our selection tool so that we can select this and put it right where we want it on our ice cream. Now let's create some or some other candies. So we'll come over here to the toolbar on the left, and we're going to pick our rectangle. Then we'll come over and we'll click and drag to make a small rectangle. Then we'll want to zoom in, so we'll go to the toolbar on the left, click the Zoom. Then we'll come over and click a few times. So we can see our rectangle. Then go back to the toolbar on the left and click our direct selection tool. It will create these circles, and we just click one and then pull in, and then it will create those rounded edges. Go back to the selection tool. Then you can select one of your candies, and then you can press Option or Alt on your keyboard, click and drag, and then you can rotate it. Just like we've learned in the other lessons, you can go back over to your Zoom tool, and this time, press the option key so you can zoom out a little. So you can see your whole ice cream, then you can go back to your selection. Then we come over and grab another one of our candies. Press the option key, click and drag, change its direction, click it again, click and drag, so we can change its direction. Then we click and drag, change its direction. And one more. Click and drag. Change its direction. Now let's give it one more candy, so we'll come over here to the toolbar on the left, and we're going to click our Ellipse Tool again. Then we will press our shift key on our keyboard and then click and drag. Make a smaller candy, then we want to change its color. So we come over here to the tool bar on the left and we click on our fail color. And I think I want this one to be a yellow color. So we'll click the yellows and find a cute yellow color and click Okay. Then we want to go to the toolbar on the left and click our selection tool so that we can come and select this circle, press Option on our keyboard, click and drag, we'll do that several more times so we can create little candies on our ice cream, where we want them. Just like that. 20. Creating our first Pattern with our Ice cream design: Or we create a pattern for our ice cream, Let's go ahead and make a few changes. First, we want to go to the selection tool on the toolbar on the left, and then come over to your artboard and click and drag to select our entire ice cream. Then come over to object and group. That allows us to move the entire ice cream wherever we want. Next, I want to introduce you to the Swatches panel. That's over here on the right, or you can come to window and then go down to your swatches. This brings up different colors that you can use that you can see. It's also where they put the patterns. So as you can see, there's a lot of details here that we may or may not need. And so I like to remove most of them so that I have a clear view of everything that I'm doing when I create a pattern. Do that. I'll come over to the three lines right here on the right, and I'll click on Select All unused right here. That selects all of them, except for the black and the white, and then I'll press my trash can right here to delete all the swatches. It's going to ask me if I'm sure, and I'll say yes. Another thing I like to do is come back to the three lines here to go to my option here, and I want to make my thumbnail view a little larger. That just helps me to see everything. Next, we're going to create our pattern. So to do that, we make sure we have our selection tool selected. Then click and drag over the ice cream, what we want to create as a pattern. We come over here to object, and then we go down to pattern and make. You'll get this message coming up and just click Okay. Come over here to your title type, tile type, and then change that. You have options of Brick by Row, brick by column, hex by column, and Hex by Row. We're going to choose brick by column. I just how that's set up, so then I'll click Done. Then we have our first pattern right here. You can see it in your swatches. Now what we can do with our selection tool still selected, we can take the one ice cream that we created and move it off of the artboard. That way, we can now come over to our rectangle tool, come into our artboard and double click. We want to make our rectangle the same size as our artboard. So that was 1920 by 1080. And then we press Okay. And then we come over to a window and line so that we can do a horizontal align center and a vertical aligned center. This rectangle has a fill on it that's white right now, and what we want to do is create the pattern in here. Now, on your swatches, if you come over here to where your pattern is, you can click it and it creates your pattern. We just made our first pattern. 21. Creating a second pattern with our Ice cream and Pizza design: For our next pattern, I wanted to take both our ice cream and our pizza and make a pattern out of both. So I've created a new project with a brand new artboard. Before we begin, I want to make a few changes. First, in our Swatches panel, if you remember from the last video, it's over here on the right, where you can go to Windows and then go down to your swatches panel there. We come over to the three lines over here, and then we choose Select All unused, and then we can click on the trash can to remove them. And then now I want to make my ice cream and my pizza a little smaller. So with the selection tool still selected, I click and drag both my items. And then I press the shift key on my keyboard, and I come over to the point, and I click and drag to make them both a little smaller. Next, we want to create our background, so we come over here to the toolbar on the left, and we click on the rectangle tool. Come over to the artboard and double click. We want our width to be 1920 and our height to be 1080, same as our artboard, and we click Okay. Then we can come over here up at the top to our line and click horizontal line Center and Vertical Align Center. Now we want to make a duplicate of this artboard. So what we can do is we can come over here to the left and click the Selection tool. Come and click our Artboard, press the Options key on our keyboard and click up just a little to create a second. Rectangle. Now we can click this rectangle. Come over to horizontal align center and Vertical Align Center. Now if we come over here to the right on our layers panel and click in, you can see that we now have two rectangles. On this bottom rectangle, we want to change its color, so we will select it you click right here and then make sure it's highlighted. Then you can come over here to your fill, double click. We can choose our color picker. I think this time I'm going to do a light purple, something like that, and click Okay. And you can see right here that it's changed the color. You can't see it because the other white rectangle is right on top of it, but you can go to the white rectangle and click on to select it. And then if you press on this eyeball, it will remove it, and then you can click on the eyeball again and it will appear, and that will show you that that other rectangle is right underneath it. Now we want to go ahead and select our ice cream and our pizza. So making sure we have our selection tool selected, we come over here to our ice cream and our pizza and select both. Then we come up here to object pattern make. On this message, you can say don't show again or click Okay. You can see the tile type is grid. You can change that to brick by row, brick by column. Hex by column or hex by row. I like brick by row for this one, but the settings are just a little off. There's a few things you can do. First, I don't want my pizza crust to be so close to my ice cream. So what you can do is come over here to your width and your height. This right here. If you click it, then you can adjust the width and the height separately. Or if you click it again like this and it looks like this, then you can change both the width and the height at the same time. So we'll go ahead and we'll just click into the width. Then on your keyboard, you can press the up arrow a few times, and that will adjust it, and you can see now that my width between my ice cream and my pizza looks a little better. My ice cream is still off. It's a little too close to my pizza, but I can adjust that by clicking the ice cream and then just moving it down just like that. Now we click Done. And if you look over here in your swatches panel, you'll see your pattern. Now we want to come over to our our rectangle here and click on it. And now we can come back to our pattern and click. And it's made our new pattern. 22. Bonus Video Pattern for Spoonflower: This is a bonus video for anyone who is interested in knowing how I create my patterns for spoon flower. Usually, when I create a pattern for spoon flower, I use an artboard size of 400 pixels by 400 pixels. I set my color mode still to RGB, and I still set my raster effects to 300 PPI. For us to get started making a pattern, I will start by going over here to the Swatches panel. And if you remember, there were all of these other patterns that come with Adobe, and I don't want to see those. So I'm going to come over here to the three lines, and I'm going to click Select All Unused, and then press my trash can. It says, Delete this watch selection. I say, and that cleans that up for us. Now I can come over here to my ice cream cone, and we'll select the entire cone. And then I want to make it a little smaller. So on my keyboard, I'll press the shift key, and then I'll click and drag down to make a smaller ice cream. And then I want to make a duplicate of this ice cream so we can then press the option on our keyboard and click and drag. To create a second ice cream. Now, since this is still selected, if we come over here to the right and we go to our layers panel, you can see which ice cream this is because it's got the blue highlight. And then we click on that. We can come down to where our ice cream is right here. Click that. And I always make sure it's highlighted. Then we can come over here to the fill color, and we can change the fill color to something that we like something about like that and click Okay. Next, we will create our pattern, so we can select both of these. We come up to option and pattern and make. If you get this message, you can say don't show again or click Okay. Here is showing as a grid pattern. You can also change it to brick by row or brick by column. Those are usually the ones that I stick with for spin flower designs. And as you can see here, everything's pretty close. I might try to adjust that just a little. So we have our width and our height here. This button here, if it looks like this, it will adjust the width and the height at the same time. You can turn it off and only adjust the width or only adjust the height. I'm going to go ahead and leave it on come over here to my width and click in there. I'm going to use the up arrow on my keyboard to go up just a little. I think I like that. We'll come over here at the top and press done. Next, you can see the pattern is over here. So for spoon flour, what I usually do is I click and I drag it right onto the artboard, and it looks like this. Then I come back over to my layers panel here on the right. And I'm going to click in here in my pattern, come to the very last one of these. That will select that triangle that it has there. And then I go over to object and then down to Artboard and fit to selected Artboard. Now we want to give our pattern a background so we come over here to our rectangle tool. Then we can click and drag. This doesn't have any fill yet, so we can go ahead and double click on the fill, and then we can change our colors till we get a color that we like and click Okay. Now, we want this background to be in the back. You have a couple ways of doing that. You can click it here in your layers panel and click and drag, and that puts it behind. Or you can right click and choose a range back. Next to send it to Spinflower, you will want to create it as a JPEG, so we'll go to File Export, Export As, give it a name. And then change your format here to JPEG. And you want to make sure to use Artboards when you export and then click on Export. 23. Class project: For your class project, make one design using Adobe Illustrator, using basic shapes. You can follow along using the designs that we've created in this video, or you can create your own designs using the same techniques. Don't forget to check out the resources section where I have a helpful guide and some color sheets to help you come up with your own designs. Once you've finished, you can upload your project to the class gallery.
