1. Introduction : Do you want to add interest and vibrancy to your painting? Board with the same
old brushwork, then have a go with
palette knife painting. It is easier than you think
and a lot of fun to do. Hi, my name is Damini and
I'm an artist from Mumbai. I have been teaching
painting since 2018 and have taught thousands of students in physical workshops. Now I'm so excited
to teach online. In this class, I'm going
to teach this gorgeous, colorful forest birds painting. I'll start this class
by teaching you the basic acrylic or oil mixing, color studies, and
palette knife techniques used in this painting. I'll also show you the
art supplies are used. And then in an easy
step by step process, you will learn all the
techniques to be able to create this painting and
add beauty to your wall. By the end of this class, you should feel confident in your ability to create
this kind of painting. And if you have followed along, you will have a
physical proof, too. This class is Bgners friendly, so if you are new to
acrylic or oil painting, you can definitely
learn a lot here, which will boost your confidence
to handle the medium. I invite you to join
me for the course. Look forward to seeing
you inside the class.
2. Sketching : Hello, everyone. In this class, we are going to sketch the
outline of our drawing. So let's start. Draw the branches here. This is a branch, and
this is another branch. We will draw the head
of the bird here. We will create a round shape like this, somewhat like a U. And then this is the inner
part of the bird here. And then the wings of the bird I will just extend
this line here and create the tail
the feather tail. So this is a basic sketching
or the outlining of it. First, we created this U, and then the inner body, then this wing, and then
this sail. Now the beak, and another bird here. A little lower than this one. The same way we are going to
create a U shape slightly. And then the inner part. And then the wing here. And then the tail this side. And the beak here. The eyes. So this is a multi colored bird. So we are just
creating an outline of where one color is going to be and where the other
color is going to come. And same for this one, I hear. So that is about it. Now, we will have to adjust
this branch somewhere. The branch will come here, so I will just fix it. So this is a branch. I will just darken it
so that we understand.
3. Painting the Background : Now I will take the colors. So I'll start with orange. I'll take a bit of
orange on the palette. Then some dark blue color. So light blue. That's some white color. Now I will take the
knife and I will just apply the stroke
this way with the knife. Oh. Oh. Just drag the
paint in a vertical way. Make sure you spread
the paint with a knife. And then I will take
some white color, and I will just apply a
few strokes of white. Like a texture defect. Keep the strokes random. I will also like to take some yellow and just put
it on the palette. And now I would like to add some yellow too
to the background. So I'll just put it here. Just mix it slightly
with the orange. Then taking the white again, and then covering
the background. And spreading the color. It's too orange. I'll
add some white here. Don't worry if the color gets
inside of the bird part, for now we are just
making the background. If any color gets
inside of the bird, we will cover it later on. And then just make sure you don't leave any canvas visible. Just apply the color properly everywhere and keep the
strokes in a downward pattern. Use the tip of the knife to paint the closer
parts to the bird. That way we have covered
this part of the painting, the background with the orange, yellow and white color. Take a tissue paper
and clean the knife. This is a knife and then just wipe it off with
the tissue paper. Make sure the previous color
is not stuck on the knife. Okay. Now we'll start
with this part, so I will take some blue here on the knife
and start applying. Again, with the
vertical strokes, and cover it entirely. We will not move the blue colour towards
the orange color. We will just keep
it on one side. I'm just covering
the visible part. The strokes are going to
be vertical eventually. As of now, I'm just trying
to cover the canvas. And paint the part, which is closer to the bird
with the tip of the knife. I will take some white apply on this part, which is closer to Bird. I will apply vertical strokes. And we will keep the
strokes vertical. Now we will move on
to the bottom part. Again, we will first
cover the canvas. Taking some white
here and applying. And then taking dark blue color on the knife and
applying on this part. Take some more dark blue on
the knife and just apply. And just covered the canvas. We will take some more white here and apply a few
strokes of white. Somewhere, not too much, so it's going to be
darker at the bottom. Now, again, we will take some yellow and orange on the knife. So it's going to
become green colour now because we are
mixing these two colors. So this is a color that we want. Taking some yellow and orange this side and applying
the strokes downwards. And the same this side as well, using the tip of
the knife to paint the parts which are
closer to the bird. Taking just yellow
now and applying it here so that it becomes
lighter shade of green. Doing the same here on this
part, applying the paint. And we make sure
that the canvas. And adding a bit of yellow and, like, light green
shade here also, a little bit, not too much. Making it light green here. So just adding a few strokes of yellow and slightly
blue combined here. So it looks green. So we have completed
the background now. We will wait for it to dry, and then we will start
to paint the birds. It will take about
a few minutes to a few hours for
this paint to dry. So we will wait till that time, and then we will start
to paint this part.
4. Painting the Forest Birds: Now we will paint the bird. So first, we will clean
the knife completely and then we'll take some orange
on tip of the palette knife, and we are going to
apply on the head part. So small thick strokes. This way. And we created this border so
that we can differentiate. We are going to fill in the part where it's going to be orange. So using the tip of
the palette knife, we are going to apply at the
back of the palette knife. So we'll start
painting the wing now, taking orange along with white and making a
lighter shade of orange and starting
to apply the strokes. Adding some yellow. So the upper part of
the wing is going to be lighter and we will use the paint on the tip
of the palette knife. This is the tip. So at the
back of the palette knife, we have taken the color, and we are just applying Small thick strokes. Now we will make this wing part and this body part as well. So we are going to take
orange color some white along with yellow and orange and blending it well and with the tip of
the palette knife, applying the strokes on the
inner part of the bird. We are going to cover this
part with this orange, yellow color, small strokes. Few strokes of white. And this part is going to
be with orange color again. So we made this line right. So we are just going to
follow the line along. We will add some
strokes of yellow on the head with a tip of
the knife to show the light. Taking some white
along with yellow. Now, we will clean the knife completely with
the tissue paper. And we are going
to take some blue in white and make a
shade of light blue. And with light blue color, we are going to
apply the strokes on the neck part of the bird with a tip
of the palette knife. And now I'm going to take some
green colour and mix it in the light blue and form a
shade of blue and green. Now, we are going to
apply it with the tip of the palette knife,
small strokes. We have this border. So we are just going
to keep that in mind and then fill the paint
within that border. So since we have
made this color, we are going to apply this
shade on this bird as well. Very small thick strokes. So we created this outline. Now we are going to fill the
color within this outline. Applying small strokes,
give it a feather effect. Now we'll take some blue and
apply a few strokes of blue here taking some blue and painting the lower
part of the bird so that it looks darker
than the upper part. And we are going to do the
same with this bird too. So at the lower
part of the mouth, we are going to apply
some strokes of blue. For this bird too, we
are going to apply a few strokes of blue to
show the darker shade. Oh. Oh. Now taking some white and adding highlight because the
light falls here, so it looks like the
light is falling here. So we add some white here
to show the brightness. And same for this bird, we're just going to
add a few strokes of white at the edge. And then we are
going to take some white and paint this part. And we will take some white, along with a bit of
orange and just apply. Taking some white more and
just extending it upwards. So that we can differentiate
between different colors. And this part is
closer to the wing, and we are just blending the colors which are
closer to white. So if it is closer
to green or blue, we just blend it well
with that color. If it is closer to orange, then we blend it
with that color. So it does not uniquely
look pure white. And now for this bird, using the tip of the brush, adding some orange to white, and then we are
applying the strokes. The D now clean the palette
knife with the tissue paper, and now we will paint this bird. Applying small thick strokes. Thick strokes with the
tip of the palette knife. And the wing And also this lower tail, it's going to be vertical
strokes with orange color. So applying the paint this way vertically and make it
look like feathers. Now we are taking some blue
along with orange to make brown color and make the
shadow here of this wing. Taking some more blue
and adding it here. This is to separate the wing from the rest
of the body part. And the same for this bird. So taking some orange
along with blue to make brown color and apply it here to make the border
and the shadow of the wing. And with the tip of
the palette knife, just apply the strokes. And then the longer feathers here at the bottom of this wing, we take some brown color, and now we make the tail. So now with the dark blue color, we are painting
the feather tail, and it's going to be long. And narrow at the bottom and
a little broader at the top. So rough vertical
strokes and just blending the color
with the orange so that it does not look
like two separate colors. Now we are taking pink and just dipping the
knife in pink color, taking some dark blue and
white to make a shade of purple and apply it on the wing. Just cover the remaining part. Use the tip of the
knife for this. And then we make longer
strokes to make the feather, adding some white
and longer strokes. With the edge of the knife now, and we just try to make a
different differentiation. Like, there's a border between
the wing and the tail. So just making it apparent, taking some more
white and just adding a few strokes to make the feather look more
visible and clear, adding some more white here. And we just make straight
lines and making the outline again of this wing taking some blue and just adding
a bit of shadow. Taking some white and just applying a small few
strokes with the edge. And these are a
little longer strokes with the edge of
the palette knife. Now a few darker
strokes at the bottom. Now moving on to that bird. We will take some purple color and start painting the tail, applying small strokes and
just filling up the area, mixing some white along with
the pink and a bit of blue. So now it looks somewhat
like pink purple. Mixing some more white
and painting this part. We only use the tip of
the knife for this. And the same we are going to
do here, this side as well. Adding a bit of
pink, small strokes. Now, adding a bit
of highlight on this part so we can see
the light falling here. And adding some
highlight here too with white color on the wing Then adding a few strokes
of pink colour on the tail. H And here as well, straight lines with the edge of the palette knife and
then taking a small brush and mixing some dark
blue and orange color to make dark brown color. And we are going to use dark
brown to paint the beak. This way, it's going to
be pointed at the edge. And this bird's weak as well. So just making a
straight slanting line pointed at the edge. It's going to be white at
the top to show the light, not purely white, but
just for highlight. Painting the eyes now
with the brown color. Making a round shape of
the eye and connecting it with the beak the same to be done on
this word, as well. Taking some white and adding
reflection on the eyes.
5. Painting the Flowers: Now we will start
painting the tree. So I have taken some brown color on the brush and I'm just
painting vertically, applying vertical strokes, and now I'm extending
the branch. And this another branch. And now I will just extend the branch towards the other
side, crossing the bird. Same here at this site. Mixing some white in the
brown color and adding a bit of highlights to show
the texture on the tree. Rough strokes here and there. Taking some more white
in the brown and adding a bit more
textured strokes. Now, mixing some orange along with brown to
make a lighter shade of brown and just applying that paint to
give it a highlight. So we can see different
colours on the tree. Now I'm going to
add some yellow, along with white, and I will just apply it over the branch. And adding a few strokes here and there to show the
roughness of the tree. Oh. Now mixing some pink colour in white and making a shade
of very light pink color, and we are going
to make flowers. So using a brush, we are just going to apply
random strokes this way. We are going to
create three to four flowers on the upper side, and the same we are going
to do on this side, too, just random small strokes. Now we are going to
add dark pink color and apply strokes on the existing strokes so that
we can see multi colours. Now we can see shade of light
pink as well as dark pink. And then I'm just going to add some strokes of white
here and there. So now we have three
colors light pink, dark pink and white. Now we will move on to the
lower part of the painting, and we are going to
make the flowers. These flowers are going to be bigger than the
flowers which are on the upper side because
these are closer. So applying the random
strokes here and there with pink colour and making a darker shade of pink and
applying strokes again. Now I will take white, and I'll just give it a
highlight with white color. Now mixing pink along
with blue and white, making a light shade
of purple color and applying the strokes
to make a flower. We can add some white. We will create few
flowers on the side too. So small strokes with a brush. Now we will paint the
claw of the bird. So with dark brown color
using the small size brush, we are just going to create a curvy shape like
a C, C alphabet. And same for the
other bird, too. Now, taking yellow with white
and making lemon yellow, and we are just going to create a few leaves here and there, fresh leaves, and
some more strokes on the background, too. So that's how we have
painted the flowers.
6. Final Word : Sure.
7. Materials used: Hello. In this class, we will see what are
the materials that are required to make this painting. First, we need colors. Here we have acrylic colors. This is crimson
lake or pink color, yellow color, white color. I have used two brands. One is camel and the
other is Fevicril. You can go for any
brand that you like. Then Kobalt blue color. Green color, dark blue
or Prussian blue. Then we would require
a palette knife. So this is a palette knife. You can get it at any art store. Then you would require a few
brushes, medium and small. A painting palette where
you can mix the paints, some water, and a
few tissue papers, and a sheet of canvas or paper.
