1. Introduction : Do you want to add interest and vibrancy to your painting? Board with the same
old brushwork, then have a go with
palette knife painting. It is easier than you think
and a lot of fun to do. Hi, my name is Damini and
I'm an artist from Mumbai. I have been teaching
painting since 2018 and have taught thousands of
students in physical workshops. Now I'm so excited
to teach online. In this class, I'll teach you this beautiful floral
balcony painting. I'll start this class
by teaching you the basic acrylic or oil mixing, color studies, and
palette knife techniques used in this painting. I'll also show you the
art supplies are used. And then in an easy
step by step process, you will learn all the
techniques to be able to create this painting and
add beauty to your wall. By the end of this class, you should feel confident in your ability to create
this kind of painting. And if you have followed along, you will have a
physical proof, too. I invite you to join
me for the course. Look forward to seeing
you inside the class.
2. Art Materials : Now we will see which all
materials are required. The first thing is a
canvas or a paper, a few brushes, a broad brush, a medium size brush, and a small brush. A pencil, then a palette or somewhere where you
can mix the paints, then a cup of water, a few tissue papers
to wipe the brushes. I'm using acrylic colours
of camel and evicril brand. So dark green colour,
then yellow color, red colour, orange,
white colour. Pink color, brown
color blue colour, dark blue, a palette knife, which you can get
at any art store.
3. Sketching : This class, we are going
to sketch the outline. So first, we are starting
with the window. One is a horizontal line,
slanting horizontal line, and then we are going to make two vertical lines at the
end of that horizontal line. First, I'm making light outline, and then I will darken them when I'm sure that I have
done it the right way. Now, one more horizontal line in the same slanting way and then adjoining it with the
upper horizontal line. And then making one more
straight vertical line, making another vertical line to show the split
between the window. And then showing the
other window part. Now we are going to
create the balcony. So I made one horizontal
upward facing line and then one horizontal
straight line, and I will repeat
the process again. So that way we have
made two lines. Now one straight
line vertically. And then in the same pattern, we are going to create
the bottom line. So we have made
one upward facing horizontal line and one downward
facing horizontal line. And in total, there are three. Now, that's a fourth one. I'm just darkening them, and then I will make the grids. So I will just make vertical lines now we are
making the window part. So straight line again. And then that's the
glass part of it. So it's basically
two vertical lines, and then we are going to join these vertical lines by placing two horizontal lines
in between and then again placing two
horizontal lines in between. That way we have
created the glass, and now doing the same
with this window, this door of the window. And again, we are creating the horizontal lines
to show the wood. Now we are going to
paint the final part. So that's the bottom
part of the balcony. So it's basically a wall. So I'm just making
it look round. So that's a shape that we're
going to give it again. So this way, we have sketched the outline of our painting.
4. Painting the background : In this class, we are going
to paint the background. So first, I'm taking some
brown color with a knife, and then I'm going to
pour in some white color. It's a bit liquidy. And now using the palette knife, we are going to mix both
these colors together. And at the back of the knife, I'm going to take some paint and start applying
on the canvas. Now, keep the palette knife
touched to the canvas. And giving vertical strokes, we are going to paint the wall. This color is a bit brown, some white, some were cream, so it's a mixture of all. Now, using the
edge of the knife, we are going to paint the parts which are closer to the window. And and keeping
the palette knife flat and taking the paint at
the backside of the knife, we will apply the paint. So it does not have
to be uniform. You can keep your
strokes random. Somewhere it could
be darker in shade, somewhere it could be lighter, and that is the beauty of it. And now with the
edge of the knife, we are going to paint the
part which is closer to the window to make sure that we don't spill the paint
inside of the window. Now, here I'm taking a lot of white and very little brown. If you take a lot of brown, then it's going to become more of brown which you do not want. We want a light shade. And gently spreading the
color across the canvas. So now we are painting
the top part first. And then moving the knife
back and forth to adjust the strokes And now I will move to the inside
part of this wall, which is, again,
somewhat cream color, so I'm going to take white
color there and apply the white color with the knife using the backside
of the palette knife. And we continue to
apply the strokes. And it's okay because this
is your first time you might find it a little difficult
or challenging to do. But with the time
and with practice, you will get better at it. And now using the
tip of the knife, we are covering the
edges of the canvas. So apply gentle mild pressure. And somewhere
horizontal, somewhere vertical strokes will
make it look natural. And now we are moving to the
bottom part of the painting. So still we are applying
the background of it. Again, we'll take
some white color. And even at the parts
where there are flowers, we are still going to
paint that part with a brown or white color
because that is a background. And with the tip of the knife, I'm adding brown color somewhere just to give
it look off the wall. And at the bottom
of the painting, again, we are going
to apply the strokes. Keep the palette knife flat. You can switch between white color and cream color and brown color
back and forth. Now, moving towards
the other side of the wall and wherever
there are edges, I'm using the tip of
the palette knife. And now to the bottommost part, we are using the back of the knife just to show you
so that you understand. I've taken some brown color now. Now here, I'm just keeping the palatini flat
and applying the strokes, and at the same time, I'm making sure that all the
spots are covered. Do not leave the canvas or
the paper blank at any spot. So the paint is
going to be thick. The density is
going to be thick. It's not very liquid. Just random strokes here and there with a tip of
the palette knife. But this part has to be done. Once you're background, the canvas is totally
covered with the paint, and on top, you can
add a few strokes. So this way we have covered
the wall of the painting.
5. Painting the flowers : Now we will paint the window. So I'm going to take brown color with a medium sized brush, and I will start
painting the window. Now, keeping the brush flat and using the
tip of the brush, we are going to apply the paint. So this is horizontal and
vertical strokes together. So for creating the
vertical lines, we are going to create
vertical strokes, and then for the
horizontal lines, it's going to be horizontal
strokes this way. You can dip the brush
in water slightly if you feel that the
paint is too dry. And then we will paint the
other side of the window. Now, vertical strokes again
with the tip of the brush. So just have a look at the reference picture and
then paint accordingly. So the window is wooden, hence we are painting it
with the brown color. Now I will dip the brush in dark blue color
and white color to make sort of lighter
shade of blue. And we are going to paint the
upper part of the window. So I'm just applying
horizontal strokes with the medium sized round brush, and I'm making sure that I don't leave any part uncovered. And now a few strokes with just white colour to make
it a little lighter. And I'm filling the entire gap. Now I will just clean the brush. I will dip the brush in water and wipe it with a tissue paper, and then we are going to mix brown and dark blue
colour together to form dark brown,
or sort of black. Now we are going to use the dark blue color to paint
the glass of the window. So again, using the
middle sized brush. With the tip of the brush, we are going to paint the glass. Alternatively, you can also
use a small size brush. If you think that painting the
smaller part is difficult. With the medium size brush, then we will opt for
the small size brush. I've taken the
smaller size brush and I'm just covering
up the small parts. So this way, we
are going to paint all these squares with
the dark blue color. And now I'm going to take some white colour to show the reflection on
top of the glass. So I'm just dipping the brush, small size brush in white color, and I'm making vertical strokes, rough strokes just to show the reflection so that
it looks like glass. A so this way, we have made all the glasses, and we are going to add reflection on
top of this glass part. Now, with a medium size brush, I'm going to take green and
yellow colour together. And with the tip of the brush, I'm just going to dab. So keeping the brush straight and with the
tip of the brush, we are just going to dab. So somewhere, it's going
to be light shade of green somewhere dark and
somewhere just yellow. So I'm using all the
shades of green. I'll take dark
green colour here. So with the tip of the
brush, I'm just dabbing. Now I'm going to mix
some blue along with green colour to make
it a little darker. So, see, this is even
more dark shade. So we are just going
to dab with the tip of the brush and keep
the strokes dry. Do not mix water
while doing this. This stroke should
be clearly visible. You do not have to
blend anything. So we will just keep on doing it on the balcony part
where I've shown. And now we are going to
move to the top part. So on the top part as well, we are going to just dab. I'll take some yellow color. So this way, we are
just dabbing and we are using various shades of green
coming to the bottom here. And now I'm just dabbing
at different parts. So notice I'm not dipping
the brush in water. I'm keeping the brush dry. So this is important to
make this kind of effect. You're not supposed to add
water while doing this. If you add water, then
the texture will not be seen and the colors will
blend with each other. Now, adding some white
here and just making a few strokes of light
green colour on the wall. Now towards the inner
part of the window, I'm using light green color
to just make the leaves, adding some dark green here. So it's basically a play with
the brush and the colors. So these are the flowers and the leaves which are coming
out from the balcony. Now we will cover the remaining part with
the green color, so that's one or the
other shade of green. So somewhere I'm
taking darker shade, somewhere I'm taking
lighter shade. Now, we are going
to add a bit of blue to green to make
darker shade again. And this is, like,
the darkest shade that we are using
for this painting. And with the tip of the brush, I'm using very
little paint to make the leaves which are
quite rough in texture. Towards the side of the wall, I'm just going to
add a few strokes. Now, mixing some white
in the green color and making a very light
shade of blue and green, we are going to
paint the balcony. So it's like the
grills of the balcony and the lines that we
made using pencil, we are just going to apply
paint over those lines, and it's somewhere light shade
of that turquoise color. It's the lightest
shade, basically. So we are just going
to add some blue and green together
along with white, and we are just going
to cover those parts. So I'm just making vertical
as well as horizontal lines as required to show the grills. I And now moving on to
the bottom part. So again, it's using a very light shade
of teal green color, and I'm using very small
size brush for this and just making the lines to make the
boundary of the balcony. And the color has to be very light so that it appears because we already
have used dark green. Over that we will
have to use a lot of white along with the blue and green to make very light shade. Now, with the same color again, now at the bottom part, but it's on top of
these leaves somewhere. So we are going to apply using this small brush and a little thick paint
so that it appears. So that way we are
making the bottom part. And this is basically
a round shape, so I'm just trying to
give it a round shape. And now we are going
to take white color and make some highlights with
the white so that it shows. So I'm applying white
paint over the grills. Now, we are going to make some dark green color
that is by adding blue and green together with a middle sized
or small size brush, we are going to apply the
color in between the lines. So that is how you will have to apply the strokes with
the tip of the brush. So that is how we will
paint the balcony. I
6. Painting the balcony : Now taking some
light green color, and with the tip of the brush, we will just dab and making variations
of this green color, we will just dab
around the window. Remember, the brush,
you do not have to dip the brush in
water. It has to be dry. And now moving towards a little bottom part on the wall and just
dabbing here and there. And also, we will use a darker shade of
green so that we can see the various colors over
the top of the window. Now we will take some pink
color that's dark pink, and with the top of the
brush, that's a tip. We are going to dab and
then I've taken some white to show the light color, and these are the flowers. So now painting the
flowers near the window, taking some pink and taking some pink along with
white and just dabbing. Now we are going to paint some more flowers at the bottom. So these flowers
are coming out from the balcony and
we're just dabbing. Somewhere it's going
to be white to show the lighter shade and somewhere it's going
to be darker pink. A few more flowers that are
coming out from the balcony. So I'm taking dark pink colour and just making a
few more flowers. Applying some white paint on
or near the dark pink color. So these flowers
look very pretty. And and some more
flowers here and there. So these are just random. Now I've taken some orange
color along with yellow and white to show these
orange colored flowers. So it's a balcony with
multi colored flowers. So I'm just painting bunch
of flowers here and there. Now taking some
yellow color and then applying that yellow color on top of these orange flowers, just to give it a highlight, And then I'm taking
some red color to paint red flowers and adding a
bit of orange in between. So this way, we have
painted flowers of various colors and a few
flowers here on the window. On the wall. Now I'm mixing some white along with blue
and pink to make it purple. And then I'm going to
add a few flowers on the top part and along with some white to
make it a little light. So we don't have
to mix any colors. We are doing the light and the dark effect so that
we see various shades. Now we are going to use
the same color to make a bunch of purple colored
flowers on the balcony. So I'm using variations
of purple color. Somewhere it's lighter
and somewhere it's dark and some flowers
here on the top part too. So adding dark and light purple. Whenever you want to give a
light shade to any color, you just have to
add white to it. And now with the
medium size brush, I am applying a few
random strokes, very random, horizontal
strokes at the bottom. These are like rough strokes. We are not trying to make
any design or anything. These are just rough strokes. So this way, we
are going to apply a few strokes because this
is also abstract painting. So there are going to be places where it's
going to look abstract. Now, some strokes
here on the wall near the window and then a few dabbing
strokes at the base. Now, I'm mixing some white along with pink to
make light pink, and I'm just dabbing. With some purple
color here and there. So we have filled
the entire balcony with various colored flowers. So now it looks
very beautiful to see multi colored
flowers in the balcony. Some are coming out
from the balcony. So we are just dabbing
with different colours. Dabbing with white to
give it a highlight. Now dabbing with the
dark green color along with blue and green and now using some
yellow color along. So we are using various
colors just to get the effect that there are many types
of leaves and flowers. Now, making the highlight
again of the balcony. So I'm using brush to make the border with
the white color. So we are just repeating
the process which we have already done just
to highlight the grills. So we are adding
the white colour. Now, we'll make blue
colored flowers. So we are using very dark blue, and we are just dabbing with the dark blue at the bottom
part of the painting. So these are kind
of blue flowers. Now, a few blue flowers at the top of the grill below
these purple colored flowers. So we are just making a few blue colored
flowers on the top. So I'm sure by now, you must have
understood how to dab. Now adding some yellow. So it's also becoming a
shade of green there. And just extending this
line of the balcony. Now a bunch of blue
colored flowers coming out from the top
part of the balcony. So we are just making dark
blue and somewhere it's green. So it's that way. Now adding some white to give
it a highlight. So we are going
to do wherever we apply dark color to
give it a highlight. And now moving
towards the bottom, we are going to use
light blue color and give it highlight again. Now, moving upwards with
a light pink colour, we will make a few flowers near the window of the balcony. Now, if you want to stop
here, you can stop. It's a complete
painting till now. But taking the painting
to an advanced level, I am just going to show you some advanced strokes
which if you want, you can try or else you can
leave the painting here. Now, for the next part,
this is optional. You can take the
palette knife and apply some white color at the base of the palette knife and
just put it on the wall. So we are just using white color and trying to spread the previous colors which
are already applied. So this way, we are
applying the colors. We're just spreading
the existing colors. So giving horizontal or
vertical strokes randomly, we are just spreading
the existing colors. Now, we are going
to move upwards, and these are the random strokes that we have applied to
make it look abstract. Now we're going to do the
same at the top wall part, applying a few strokes
here and there, moving towards the
other side of the wall, taking some white on it, and just spreading
the existing color. Now applying some
strokes of brown color vertically on the wall just
to give it an effect of wall. Now moving upwards, using
the same white color at the backside of
the knife and just spreading the existing
color on the top. So we don't have to mix
the colors entirely, just to give it a texture. So we do not have to mix white completely with
the green color. So just applying
vertical strokes here and there randomly. Now, horizontal
strokes somewhere, and we are just applying white paint on
the existing colors. The same has to be done
over the entire wall. So we are just spreading the white paint,
but not completely. As you can see, I have not completely merged any
color with anything. The previous color is
visible at the back. So this is how we make
abstract paintings. So it looks like that
something is there, but not exactly what
exactly it is there, but still one can make out the leaves or the
wall or the flowers. Now we will move to
the bottom part. So we are just going to
apply a few more strokes of white color vertically
and then horizontally. So we get a hint of purple
as well when we do this. And then giving slanting
round strokes at the edge. Upwards, downwards,
horizontal vertical strokes, and then making a few strokes
here and there randomly. And here on the wall, we can apply a few strokes
with a brown color. So what we have already done, I'm just repeating the process. We have already
applied these strokes. I want to add a bit
more depth to it, bit more interest to it. So I'm doing the
same thing again. Now applying some white paint again on the top
part of the wall. So it just basically adding
more color, experimenting, adding random strokes
here and there, just to make it
look more natural and rough and symmetric. So we are not going to make it look symmetric or
similar in any way. Wherever we are painting, it's going to be
a unique stroke. Okay, now we are just going
to dab on top of the balcony. Now it's going to
be lesser strokes. And now using small brush, we are going to apply a few horizontal and vertical strokes with the white color to give
it the effect of the wall. So that's a wall
closer to the window, and now I'm using blue
color to make the shape. And then just spreading
the blue colour. Now I'm applying some white
color to give it a highlight. Now notice, I'm not applying
the paint everywhere. It's randomly somewhere,
not everywhere. So it's a texture
art, basically. And a few strokes of
blue on the wall, too. So that way you can just
apply random strokes. Now, a few strokes with a light green colour on the top part to
show a few leaves. So that's the way we
have made an abstract, yet a realistic painting. And we have applied
multiple layers, one layer after the other layer, and we can see it through that there are multiple
layers applied. It's just not done in
one or two layers. And a few strokes with a light green colour on
the wall part as well. Now using the brown color, we are just making the shapes obvious and a little brown color towards the bottom of
this window and wall. So adding some white colour
additionally on top of it. So this way, we have made
a gorgeous floral balcony. I hope you enjoyed the class. Do share what to create. You can upload your painting, and I would love to
see what to make. Thank you for watching. See you in the next course.
