About This Class

This course is an introduction to one stroke painting using acrylic paint.

One stroke painting is a decorative painting technique in which the artist loads the brush with two (or more) different colours simultaneously to create a unique blending effect. This works especially well to depict the delicate nuances of flowers and leaves.

The one stroke painting technique can be used to create beautiful florals on paper, glass, wood and fabric.

This class focuses on practising this technique using acrylic or oil paints.

This class is beginner-friendly and will start out with basic one stroke brush strokes. From there we will cover basic petals and leaves and gradually build up the skills to make the painting.

By the end of the class, you will have learned multiple one stroke techniques and learned how to use those techniques to create various flowers.

1. Introduction : One stroke painting is a decorative painting technique in which the artist loads the brush with different colors simultaneously to create a unique blending effect. This works especially well to depict the delicate colors of flowers and leaves. Hi, my name is Damini and I'm an artist from Mumbai. I have been teaching painting since 2018 and have taught thousands of students in physical workshops. Now I'm so excited to teach online. This course is an introduction to one stroke painting using acrylic or oil colors. This class is beginers friendly and will start out with the basic one stroke brush strokes. From there, we will cover basic petals and leaves and gradually build up the skill to make the entire painting. One stroke painting technique can be used to create beautiful florals on paper, glass, wood, and fabric. By the end of this class, you will have learned one stroke technique and learned how to use those techniques to create various flowers. I invite you to join me for the course. Look forward to seeing you inside the class. 2. Sketching : Welcome to the class. In this class, we are going to sketch the flour. So using a pencil, I am going to draw the petal. So first, we are going to draw first petal. There are total five petals. Now, adjacent to that is a second petal. This is a rough shape that we are drawing now, and then we are going to make a third petal. So the petals are narrower at the base, and then they expand. And that's a fourth petal and now the fifth petal. So this is a rough sketch that we have drawn first. Now I'm just darkening the shape so that we know. So first, when we started, it was just light so that we can make the changes if we want to. And now we are going to give it a shape. We are going to give the edges a shape. So we are giving shape to the petal. It's a rounded zigzag at the edge. So that is how we are going to give the shape to every petal. And that's the fourth one, and the next one is the fifth one. Now we are going to make seeds coming out from the flour. So it's going to be a curvy shape, two curvy lines, and then seeds on top. Now we will start to make the leaves. So one leave at the top part. So again, we will make a rough shape first, and then we are going to give it a proper shape. So now I'm making the edges of the leaves defined. So first, when we start to sketch, it's going to be light sketch so that we can make the changes if we want to. And now the second leave here on the other side, again, it's a rough sketch first, and then we are going to give it the shape. So the leaves are pointed at the edge, so we are just making that shape. Now the third leaf, which is going to be at the bottom part of the flower. So I've made a rough sketch first, and then I'm making the edgy corner. So I'm making the rough sketch first, and then I'm defining the edges. O 3. Painting the background : Now we will start painting the background. So I have taken some brown color and some dark blue color on the palette, and then I'm going to mix them both to make a shade of very dark blue or sort of black. It's not exactly black. It's a shade of dark blue. So now what I'm doing is I'm taking the brush and applying horizontal strokes with a flat brush. And then to cover the edges, I'm using the tip of the brush to make the shapes so that we don't overlap. And now I'm just using the flat brush to cover all parts. And when you come to the edges, you can just lift the canvas and then paint the parts which are a bit challenging to paint. Use the tip of the brush to do this work. And then moving on to the bottom part, again, we are going to apply a few horizontal strokes. Again, we are going to make the outlines of the petal so that we don't put the paint inside of the petals. While I paint, I make sure that the canvas is not visible that all the spots are covered with color. Now, the corners. So we are just going to apply the paint at the corners with the tip of the brush. So you can apply horizontal or vertical strokes to paint the corners. So that's how we are covering the edges with the brush. So go slow and enjoy the process of making it. And you can dip the brush in water if you feel like the paint is dry or the paint is thick. And then we paint the remaining part on the side. And that's how we have painted the background of the painting. 4. Painting the Flower: Now we will start painting the flower. So I have taken pink, dark pink color and white color on the palette. And using a middle sized round brush, I'm just going to make the outline of the flower. So I'm using the tip of the brush, slightly dipping the brush in water. And then filling in the paint, adding some white colour on the top of the petal. So the petal is going to be light pink at the top. So first, we have made the outline, and then we are going to fill in the paint. So you can see a transition from dark color to light color. And then we are going to apply slanting strokes. It's going to be slanted at the top. Now, I'll just clean the brush in water and using a tissue paper, I'll just wipe the brush off to take the extra water out. And then dipping the brush in white color, I'm going to paint the edges of the petal with white, and I'm just going to apply the strokes which are facing towards the inner part of the petal. So these are the strokes that we are going to apply. And now I've painted the edge with the white color. And now we are going to take dark pink color and make the shades coming out from the bottom of the petal. And now we are going to clean the brush with the tissue paper and taking some pink again, moving on to the second petal, we are going to paint the base of the petal first. So it's a outline and then dipping the brush slightly in water to make the paint smooth. And then filling in the paint slightly Then taking some white color and making light pink shade and then painting the edge of the petal with a light pink colour. So notice I am using the tip of the brush to do this. And then give the petal the shape that it has. So at the edge, it has somewhat rounded zigzag shape, so we make sure to give that shape. Now, with the white, we are again going to paint the edges and push the strokes inwards. And now taking some dark pink color at the bottom of the petal, we are just going to apply a few strokes facing upwards of the petal. So but here for the second petal, these strokes are sidewards. In regards to petal, it's going to be upwards, but since this petal is located at a position which is facing towards the side, so the strokes are sidewards. Now, taking some white color and painting the edges and dragging the strokes towards the center of the petal. So I'm just giving the strokes which are facing towards the center of the petal. Now, moving on to the third petal. So here, first I'm taking dark pink color again, painting the center part of the flower that is the bottom, the base of the petal, and then dragging the strokes upwards. Upwards in regards to the petal. That way, it's the sideway strokes because the petal is facing towards the side. And then I'm going to mix some white color to the pink color and making a shade of light pink, we are going to paint the edges again. So I hope by now you have understood where to apply lighter strokes, where to apply darker strokes. And now, the strokes are facing towards the inner part of the petal. See the direction of the petal, how they are moving. So it's like the petal is coming out from the flour. So we are giving it a shape that makes it look so. It's coming out. So the strokes have to be in a way that show the direction of the petal. Now moving on to the fourth petal. So first, I've painted the edge here with a light pink color. And then dragging the strokes inwards, and again, see the direction. It's a curvy. It's a bit curvy. Cleansing the brush again, taking dark pink color and then painting the inner part of the petal. So the inner part is darker because it gets a shadow. And then the fifth petal. So taking dark pink color, and we are just painting the base of the petal. And this petal is somewhat V in shape. So painting the bottom part with the dark pink and painting the top part with the light pink, and then dragging the strokes inwards. So see the direction of the strokes. Now, these strokes are coming downwards. I So this is how we have to make the shades. And then I'm just painting the edges. Now we will take dark pink color again and paint the center part of the flower with the dark pink. So very gently painting the center part. So that's basically the base of the petal, which is darker in color. Same way, we are going to apply these strokes at the base of the petal on every petal. This shows that all the petals are adjoined at one central place. And taking light pink color, I'm just applying a few more strokes at the edge of the petals defining the boundaries. Now mixing some dark blue color in pink color to make it even darker. So it's a darker shade of the pink. And now applying the strokes of this dark pink at the base of the petal. Since the shadow falls here, so it's going to be the darkest part. Similarly, we are going to apply these darker colored shades on every petal. These strokes are facing upwards in the direction of the petal. You do not have to cover the entire part with the one color. It's basically a gradient effect, a shading effect. So the strokes, the shading should be visible. So now on the fourth petal, I'm just giving it the shape that it has. So we are going to apply the strokes in a curvy way. Now taking white color with this small brush, we are going to paint the outline of the petal, the outer edge, and then pushing the strokes inwards. So it's basically two contrasting colors. It's darker at the base and lighter on the outer edge. Now, applying the strokes facing towards the center of the petal or the center of the flower. O. We will have to retain the shape of the edge. It's not rounded at the edge. Now for the third petal, the light falls on the center part of the petal. So the white color is to show where the light falls. Now, the edges, again, The light falls also on the center part of this petal. So we are going to apply a few thin strokes at the center part of this petal. Not everywhere, but at a few places. A now coming to the fourth petal, again, taking some white with a thin brush and using the tip of the brush, we are going to make the strokes which are facing downwards and going towards the center of the petal. These strokes are a little rounded. So wherever there is more of white, it shows that the light falls here. Me light falls there. Making few strokes on the center part, the middle part of the petal. Now, the fifth petal. So first, we will paint the edges. And then we are going to draw the paint inwards. So that's how with the tip of the brush, see, we are not blending any color. We are just applying visible strokes. The stroke should be clearly visible. We don't have to blend or mix any color. Now for this petal, more of light falls on the edge. So we are going to paint the edge with more of white color. And now drawing the strokes inwards. Okay. Now we are going to make the edges more defined so that we understand. I've taken some dark pink color and I'm applying few strokes coming out from the center of the flower. And using dark pink color with a small size brush, now I'm just painting the edges somewhere, not everywhere. Even on the edges, there are parts where the shadow falls, so we are painting those parts now. So that way we are painting the part that has a shadow. So I'm using the darker shade that's pink along with a bit of dark blue to make dark pink. For the second petal, it's going to be darker pink at the edge somewhere. And then drawing the strokes inwards. This is how. And then I'm just making a few more strokes. So the strokes are very gentle. We are not blending any color. These are visible brush strokes. Now, for the third petal, it's going to be a little darker at the edge of the petal. So this is where the light falls. For the fourth petal here, we are painting one part of the edge with a darker pink I'm adding a touch on these strokes so that they don't look like a separate color. O. Adding dark pink color here and there. Now taking some white color and painting the parts where most light falls. So with a small size brush with a tip, we are just going to paint some light falling. So for the fourth petal, the light falls on the middle part of the petal, we are going to give it a round shape, curvy shape. Now for the first petal, we are going to apply a few strokes at the edge. Moving on to the second petal with a small size brush, we'll take some white color and just paint the outline, the edge. And I'm gently painting the edge. And then a few strokes at the middle part of the petal. This is where most light falls on this one. So this is how we have painted the flower. 5. Painting the Leaves: In this class, we are going to paint the leaves. So using a middle sized round brush, we are going to paint the edge or the outline of the leaf with dark green color. So you can see dark green color on the palette, and I am just drawing the strokes inwards. And now I have taken some light green color that is by mixing white and dark green together. And now I'm applying the strokes and drawing the strokes inwards or to the center of the leaf. Now, using a small sized brush, we are going to apply a few strokes with a dark green color at the edge. Only at the edge and drawing the strokes inwards. We will retain the shape on the edges. Now drawing a center line on the leaf. Now taking some white color on the small brush and applying a few strokes on the edges. So this is where the light falls on the leaf. Taking some more white and making the strokes on the other side. So the strokes are visible, and we are not blending or merging any color. Now I'm mixing some dark pink color in green colour to make a darker shade of green. And then I'm painting the edges of the leaf with a dark green colour to show the shadow. So also the place where the leaf originates and the place where the leaf starts to show that's very close to the flower, that is where we are going to paint it with a dark green color, and we'll make a central line with Now, taking some light green colour by mixing white and green together, I'm just painting a few strokes coming towards the inner part of the leaf. Originate from the edges and move towards the inner part or the central part. Now moving on to the second petal with the medium size brush, taking green color, I'm painting the edges or the outline of the leaf. Now we'll take some light green colour and draw the strokes inwards from the edges. Now, adding some pink colour in the green. We will make a shade of dark green, and with a small size brush, we are going to paint the parts where most shadow falls. So that's the place which is closer to this petal. Thus, it also differentiates the leaf from the petal, and this is a part where the shadow falls. So we are just making a few strokes strokes coming from the edges towards the center. Some strokes could be longer or smaller, and now making a line in the center Applying a few strokes on the edges. Now showing the pointed edges of the leaf. Now showing the pointed edges of the leaf with the white color or light green color. Now we will paint the third leaf. So I've taken some green colour, and I will start painting the edges. A And now taking some light green color, we are drawing the paint inwards from the edges. Again, we make sure to not blend any color. The strokes, the brush strokes should be clearly visible. Painting the sharp edges of the leaf with the light green colour, taking some white Okay. We take some white and show the place where the most light falls. And now taking the darker green that is by adding some pink in green. So we make a darker shade of green, and then we paint the center line of the leaf. And taking some white color, we are just going to draw the strokes inwards. I'm adding some highlight on the other leaves too. So this is to show the highlight. Now, we will take light pink color with a small size brush and make the pollen tube coming out from the flower. So with the tip of the brush, We will paint the pollen tube. Now I have taken some yellow colour on the tip of the small size brush, and I'm just dabbing to show the pollens. So we are making a few dots with the yellow color using the tip of the brush. A And now we will take some pink colour on the small size brush and we'll make a few dots on top of these yellow dots. So these are the pollens or the seeds. Now we will add some brown color and dark blue colour together. And using a small size brush, we are just going to paint the inner part or the center part of the flower to show the shadows. So these are just at the center or at the base of the flower, and we are not going to paint the darker shade of this color anywhere else. It's only at the center. So this is how we have painted the beautiful hibiscus flower. Hope you enjoyed the class. Do share with me what you create. I would love to see your painting. Thank you for watching. See you in the next course. Oh 6. Video: Now we will see which all materials are required. The first thing is a canvas or a paper, a few brushes, a broad brush, a medium size brush, and a small brush. A pencil, then a palette or somewhere where you can mix the paints, then a cup of water, a few tissue papers to wipe the brushes. I'm using acrylic colours of camel and evicril brand. So dark green colour, white color pink color, brown color, dark blue.
