About This Class

It’s all about illustrating fashionista characters with their animal matching outfit friends and pushing your character illustrations to new heights! It’s an opportunity to show off your fashion sense. 

Drawing characters can be intimidating, but just with a little guidance and practice you'll be able to create yours! Since the character drawing is the core of different illustration fields, with the help of this class, you can upgrade your illustrations in every field including patterns, interiors, nature, travel illustrations and so on. Your stylish characters will fit in and help to level up all of your illustrations. 

Join me as I share how to:

I’ll be walking you through my whole process on how I create my fashionista characters, and exploring ways to create character style stories and experiment with hair styles, clothes, accessories, animal friends and colours to make your characters stand out.

I’ve made some of the first steps easy with cheat sheets so if you want you can get started to stylize your fashionista right away! 

I’ll be working in Procreate for this class but feel free to use any other drawing software!

Whether you’re new to illustration or a seasoned artist, I’ll help you to jump start your creativity and find a direction while creating a unique stylish character from head to toe!

1. Intro: I think the important thing about creating your characters is to have fun and make it your own, is about the story and thinking about more than style in every decision. Just like a fashion designer or a Studies I restart item you'll pick will make your character more exciting. And son up from Cote. Hi, I'm Duran. I'm a freelance illustrator and designer and I love drawing patient as the characters in Procreate. My biggest passion has always been creativity in all of its forms. Designing, drawing, creating, and teaching. Are you buy the course and I love spending time in my garden with my cat sovereign. My illustration style is really close to patient illustration. And some ways really reach with skylight tombs and vibrant colors. So the product in this class is to create a former deficiencies that character and her best dog friend also in style. So they are going to be lifestyle bodies. The first part will be creating a story and that's going to help get your creative juices flowing and that will inspire your, your fashion style. We will work with teams and styles and exercise, brainstorming, gathering references, sketching different by deposes hair and accessories. And most importantly, styling our character from head to toe. Your character will be more exciting and complete with the company and you will also create in this class. And at last, as a bonus, we will also practice drawing dogs and style them up as well. Colors on details is another big part of the clause. We would create color plays, low-res color in your illustrations, some tips on color blocking. And I will show you so many tips that will help you to get out your color comfort zone. I organize my class as simply an informative as possible. And I hope you will learn something new for yourself, whether you are an advanced Illustrator or a beginner, I will be using Procreate to this class, but feel free to use any kind of drawing apps that you are comfortable bed. Are you ready to upgrade your character? So next level, join me in this class. It won't be boring. 2. The Class Journey: I'm really happy that you have decided to take this class. For your class project, I wanted to create your own fashionista character with her fashionista animal friend. I prepared a list for you that includes different themes, and fashion styles to help you while creating your character story. First, we'd find exercises. We will practice on drawing different body types, hairstyles, and slicing our characters. As a bonus, we will also practice drawing a dog friend for our character. Now we are moving into our main project, and we start with creating our character story by picking our characters' theme, fashion size, and animal friend. We are going to brainstorm to plan out the whole scene, like how you want your characters to dress, which accessories, and style items your characters are going to have, and of course, your characters matching outfit animal friend. We really spend some time here to create a concept, and that's going to help you later while picking your reference images and sketching your character. Down there we are going to collect reference images based on our concept, and start sketching. After you have a sketch that you are comfortable with, the next step is to understand more about colors and color palettes. We will practice creating a color calm, different methods to coloring your illustrations. Finally, we are going to finalize coloring our character, and adding texture. I have included lots of exercises, and cheat sheets to help guide you through each lesson. You can find these in the project, and resources section below. Also throughout the project, I will share some tips, and tricks to help you feel confident to draw your stylish characters so that you can quickly, and efficiently create your final illustrations. Before getting started on our exercises, in the next video, I will share some tips on creating fashionista characters. 3. Tips to Create Fashionista Characters: When it comes to creating stylish characters, the first thing you need to think about is your character's backstory like what is your character's lifestyle? Your character can be this hippie girl carrying flowers to her studio. Imagine she wears very colorful cloth with big patterns on it. I think a long skirt might go with her style. I'm thinking she might like bold accessories, like a big colorful necklace with flower earrings. Your character can be this very sporty girl going to her gym class. I'm thinking she might be a sports fan with a tank top and her sporty issues with socks and might wear a cap hat. I think if you illustrate a fashionista girl, you will also need to think about your style companies, not just the clothes, that will make your character much more interesting. Your hippie girl might carry some flowers or a hippie-style music instrument, maybe a guitar. Maybe she's traveling with the coffee suitcase. Maybe she likes cats. Or when you think about your sporty girl, she might be carrying a water bottle or a Pilates Mat, or maybe she's about to go for Iran Bihar dog. The thing is, you need to see the whole picture. Use your imagination and brainstorm, and sketch as much as possible to create a deepness in your character. We're all different and unique in our own way, so why not to play with your character's body proportions? I think it's always nice to see a variety when it comes to body proportions in your character illustrations. Just think about the different ways that you can diversify your body proportions. You can imagine your character as this super skinny girl, but a Kibbe body type can be as much as exciting for your character illustration, and sometimes even more. You just need to play around to create variety in your character illustrations. I think it's really good to try and experiment with different body types as much as possible, this will make your character a lot more interesting. Hair can completely change your character's personality. It's very important the style I attempt to copy your character's facial look. It's always fun to play around as well. Your hippie girl might have very long hair, or of course, braids will step by. Or your sporty girl might have a messy bone or a ponytail might fit well to your character style. Never underestimate the power of hairstyle when slicing your character illustration. Just enjoy experimenting and practicing with drawing different hairstyles. As final, of course, we can't forget about accessories. Accessories always complete the look. Adding details such as a flower hair, around the cheek glasses, can give your character style a lot more personality. Patterns in the clothes can be your biggest accessory as well. Experimenting with different ways of styling will really help you to find your style when it comes to creating fashionista characters. There are so many different ways to style up, so it can be a little overwhelming. In case you're stuck or don't even know where to start, just follow the lessons in order. Now you know the things to pay attention when creating your fashionista character illustrations, so join me in the next video, we are going to start with our exercises. The first one is body variations. 4. Practice with Different Body Types: In this lesson, I'm going to show you how to draw different body types from scratch. I'm not going to talk about drawing super realistic body types with eight-head rules. Instead, we will dive into the fun part and use geometric shapes such as triangles or circles to help us while creating our body types. Let's start. I'm going to start with drawing a triangle shape for the torso and then a circle for the hips. I'm basically going to draw triangles in different sizes for my character's torso, and again, circles in different sizes and shapes for my character's hips. Top corners of the triangles represent the shoulder wideness, and the height is the height of the torso. Small circles, small hips, and bigger circles are bigger hips. Just try to keep in mind this idea while drawing your different body shapes. Like if you want to draw an hour glass body shape, it will be great idea to keep the wide of the circle and triangle around the same length. Or you can just play around drawing different size circles and triangles and surprise yourself with results. All done. Now, in a new layer, I want you to draw a bottom line to control my character's height. This line is going to be the line that my character's body's finish. Now I'm going to create a new layer on top of my first layer and pick another color to draw. Now we can sketch the rest of the body using these shapes to help inform our decisions. I draw my triangle again and done hip borders and just mapping out lines for the legs. I leave some space for the feet. Then I'm just doing the same with our arms by mapping out some lines. I use very basic triangles for the arms. Arms [inaudible] the body posture and up around halfway down the tie. Add some more triangles for the head and the feet. I'm just going to do the same with all of them. I can also change the pauses a little. Like you can roughly sketch out the elbow in the middle of the arm and use two different triangles to create your arm pose. This pose will be good for a character who is waiting for something. I continue slightly changing the body poses. I want this one's body to have a little angle so I keep one hip a bit out and the other side straight. This trick will give her posture a little movement. All done. I'm going to close my first layer to see how it looks. As you can see, we already have five different body types. This posture will be totally enough if your character has winter or baggy clothes. But if your character will be in summer mode and wear bikinis then you might need more. For that, I'm creating a new layer and picking a new color. Different colors help me to distinguish all my layers. I'm using circles again. I wanted to create a circle for the breast and another circle for the hips area, by referencing my earlier drawing. If you want, you can play with the proportions a little bit more here by just exaggerating your earlier lines. Now we can build up the flesh around that. I'm creating a new layer and pick another color and now lower the opacity of my earlier layer. Then I just trace over my reference shapes, connecting circles and lines and then drop the color inside of my shape. These curves are helping to create some flow and enhance the aesthetic appeal of our character. All done. Now we have different body types to dress up. You can see how these very basic shapes that we started with have to create our distinctive body shapes. For this lesson, final product, I want you to finish sketching at least three different body types and refine your body sketches and head up to settings and save it as JPEG. After finishing your body poses exercisers, join me in the next video where we are going to be exercising drawing different hairstyles. 5. Practice with Hairstyles: Since we created our different body types, now we can enjoy drawing different hairstyles for our characters. I want you to bring the hairstyle exercise sheet that I prepare for you to your canvas. I go to Settings and insert the photo and now create a new layer on top of it. Now I can start practicing. Normally, the hairline will come halfway between the eyebrows and the top of the head and I will draw the [inaudible] For my first character, I imagined her with a fun and a little childish personality so I'm thinking of a pigtail hair type for her. I just go sketch and play around with different ideas. Maybe she has hair ties or scrunchies as a hair accessory. I'm done. I'm going to delete unnecessary parts on my hairstyle sheet. I suggest you to duplicate the exercise sheet and make it invisible just in case if you need it later on. For my next character, I'm thinking about medium hair, straight, and maybe on the side. Looks good. For this one, I'm thinking the same hair with a few changes, so maybe she can have a fuller look with baby hair. Again, I clean up a little. For her, I'm thinking about making her hair a bit more curly, so I'm just playing with the shape a little and maybe a half bun on the top and quickly clean it up. I'm thinking about a relaxed fishtail on the side and maybe I can add some flowers to her hair, just like Frida. For the next one, I'm thinking, jumping into the short hairstyles, just very basic curly hair and I'm adding a few more details. For this one, I really want to give her a bun and just a few hair on the side, just to give her a little bit more relaxed mood. For this one, I want to create something more interesting. Maybe she has a funky style, so I'm just trying to find different ways that I can bring out her personality. Some of the hairstyles can be a little bit more difficult drawing it from your head. In that case, using reference photos is totally fine. For the last one, I'm thinking, two messy buns for her on both sides. It's all done. Don't forget, it's just about having fun with it and experimenting. If you're stuck on hairstyles, don't worry, just have a look at photos online and see if you can get inspired that way or if you're feeling adventurous try and draw from imagination. I think diversity is important so I really suggest checking different ethnicities' hairstyles. In this way, you can really come up with different hairstyle ideas. Once you've finished, if you have any loose layers, merge them down, and now you shall be left with various hairstyles. Now it's your turn. Use my faces cheat sheet and draw different hairstyles, experiment with different ethnicity hairstyles, and try to incorporate hair accessories as well. You can always use my hairstyle cheat sheet to get inspired. Now that you have exercised with drawing different hairstyles, let's jump into the next video where we are going to be playing with dressing up our characters. 6. Drawing To Fashion Up: A character's clothing is like an extension of your character design itself. Just for the style, I would like us, I think it's one of the best parts of the process where we can really enjoy and shine. In this lesson, we are going to enjoy dressing up our characters. Earlier we practice on drawing different body types. In this lesson, you can use the outcome of your body variation practice, or you can use the practice sheet I prepared for you. My practice sheet is on my commas and now I want to dress up my character with different types of clothes. I prepared for you a mood board full of different clothes for your characters. If you want, you can get inspired by this mood board while dressing up your characters or you can go crazy and draw from your imagination. It's really up to you. I will go with the second choice and draw from my imagination. This is all about having fun and dressing up different body types in different moments. I put this exercise together just so you get used to drawing different body types in different moments and have some fun. Let's start. I will start with a very basic outfit. Maybe she wears a jacket. Since we already have a body posture as a layer underneath, what I need to do is just using it as my guide. I don't need to draw really close to the body. It's up to my clothing style. I had this way of drawing that. I always drop the arms a little bubbly and draw the other parts very sharp. When you practice a lot, you get your own style in these details. I think this practice can help you try different styles when it comes to clothes. Like you can try to draw the arms of the jacket differently in every character and see which one you like best. For the bottom, I'm thinking pants and I'm pretty much using my body guide outlines here. Since we already practiced drawing different hairstyles, you can draw a hairstyle that fits to her outfit and her character story. Think about it as a whole story. Don't forget that clothes, hair, accessories, all are part of her character story. Done with my first character and moving to the second. We have a different type of body here. I think it's really important to practice with different kinds of body types in drawing, cause including different body types, ethnicities, different age groups in your illustrations brings a diversity and a lot more excitement to your illustration, especially if you're trying to create a portfolio for an agency. I'm drawing a jacket again, but with a different structure. I'm using her curves as my guide. Maybe I can add stripes on the arms. So I'm just playing around. Maybe a mini skirt with boots. For me, one of the important things, when you illustrate, is simplifying what you draw. It's a personal choice but I think it helps you a lot to gain your own style and to not copy exactly your reference images. Looks great. Now, I will continue with the rest and trying to bring up different personalities in my characters and try to add accessories as much as I can. I finished dressing up all my characters, and now it's your turn. Go ahead and draw different outfits on your characters. Don't forget, you can use the practice sheet I prepared for you. In the next video, we are going to be practicing drawing a dog frank for our character. 7. Drawing Dogs: In this section, we are going to practice drawing dogs. I know it can be intimidating if you never draw animals before. But don't worry because we are going to break down, down into a simple combination of shapes. So now I'm on my new scar Khan was. And I will start with bringing my reference photo to my car was. I prepare reference photos for you to download on Pinterest and folder includes the reference photos that I'm going to use now as well. And the link is in the project description below, we will be practicing drawing a standing dog, sitting dog, one from the side view and one from the front view. Okay, let's start with this cute dog. I lowered opacity and create a new layer. We basically, we'll try to capture the overall shape of the dog by drawing a combination of circles. Okay, now I will show you how this method works. As you can see, there is definitely a circle in the head and two more in the torso and a rectangle in the head. Diarrhea replacing a shape with a circle is the simplest and easiest approach. It's very useful because it can be applied to an art style. So this is basically what we are going to do with dismantled. So let's start. I want you to start with the head. So draw a circle for the head. This is the so-called next, draw, the doc snug roughly in the shape of a rectangle down, draw a triangle for the ear and tried to catch the second appearance of the ears. Okay, now it's time for the torso. Use two circles to represent the volume around the upper body and lower body. When I position the circles, I tried to refer some parts in the stocks body. For example, the first circle is passing the air eligible and the second circles shares the same top point with the first one. Sees the dog is really short, they are really close to the head. And as your second step tried to connect your geometric shapes with very basic lines. Next, I will draw legs. I first want you to draw a guideline at the bottom. And since the legs are very short, I want to make it closer to the dog's body. Okay, Now draw triangles for your legs. And try to focus on how the legs connect to the body. Like in which angle. And as you see, I drove the legs on the back shorter than the legs in the front. And now draw another triangle for the tail and adult for the eye. Now we have a sketch of the whole body of a dog by just using circles and simple lines. And now I lowered opacity of my sketch layer and create a new layer on top and angle in for a more detailed final sketch. Drawing very geometric shapes is kind of my styles. So myDog is still pretty much minimal. But you can definitely go with more details and more rounded shapes and the second round. Okay, let's draw a sitting duck. Start with drawing a circle for the skull and draw a triangle for gammas and anoles. You can adjust the position of the jaw according to write a doc as locking. And this will create a moment. Dan, draw a triangle for the ear. The stokes ear is pretty long, but you can exaggerate and drove even longer if you want. Down, draw a big circle for the torso. A tip here is that van drawing esteem dog. The shape of two back legs can be simplified twice. Oracle sold, drove us Oracle for the back legs as well. Before drawing the front legs, I want you to draw a guideline for the ground. And now you can't draw triangles for the fraud legs. I like to draw another triangle for the power of the back leg and drove the neck by connecting two circles. I want to play with the position of the air a little, and I use the Select tool for that. Even though we can see the tail, I always suggest throwing a tail. It just completes the look and makes them theatre. And as loss, draw the eye and the nose. Ok, now we have the structure, soil. Let's go for a final sketch. Lowered opacity of your sketch layer and create a new layer on top and start trace over with your final lines. This talk has very characteristic features. For example, I really want to add this fluffy look to my drawing. And I want to increase the volume of the tail just to add more personality to my dog. Don't forget, you can always exaggerate some parts if you want, then I want to give the texture of the year with wavy lines. And I also like to draw a tone in most of my dog and cat drawings. I think it just completes the drawing and make some really cute. And of course, the patrons, they are definitely distinctive and you shall add time to your growing. Okay, let's continue with a front view sitting dog example. Start with a circle for the head and then draw a triangle for girls. Now, draw semi-circles leading to the noise for the joe. Down, draw the eyes. Here's our a very distinctive feature for restock. So I really want to show that soil draw the rounded lines at the bottom of the ears. Down row of triangles for a frog, lakes very simply, front loop is quite symmetrical, so I think it's easier to start with. And this is how I draw back legs. And editorial again, even if you don't see it. Okay, Structure is done. Now I can start refining my sketch in a new layer. You can always start running the straight lines and corners. It's up to your style. Or you can always add more details. Since you have the overall structure, it will be a lot easier to add details for you. Now it's time for your styling. Styling. Okay, now did all the dogs are drawn in a new layer. We can go in and style our dogs. You can draw a simple color, a bandanna ahead already been. It will definitely make your drawings more eye-catching. Now it's your turn. Drove trade-offs for on your reference photos. One standing dog and 20 sitting dogs while we did front wheel. And once we decide view, and also I want you to style up your dogs. We finish all lasers sizes. So now we are ready to move to our main project. And in the next video, I will explain your main project for the class. 8. Class Project : Okay, it's time for your class project. I wanted to create your own officials or character with her efficient as that animal friend. This can be in NSW like I just want you to make sure to have fun with it. We will start to create our character story by picking our characters team, fashion sense, and animal friend. I created this cheatsheet for you guys. On the left you have different teams and on the right you have Facial Styles. And I also put together these animals sheet for you to choose from. These Tucci sheet will help you by creating your character's story. Here's an example. I chose book farm girl with a French style. And when you look at this illustration, you can't say that she lost her it with a book in her hand and some others in her back. I taught drinking coffee matches with our style. So it's all about small details. She's rocking the French drives with a trenchcoat. Maybe a little colorful, but I think it's okay to inter-operate. So the team I choose for my main project is schoolgirl with tomboy style. Join me in the next video where I will be showing you how to work with this cheatsheet to create our character story. 9. Brainstorming Your Character: I know it can be hard to struggle with creative block. I think we all been there. I put together these cheat sheet for you guys, just to help you out. If you are struggling with deciding your characters, theme, or facial styles, hopefully, this cheat sheet will help and you can find it in the project and resources section below. I'm going to bring my cheat sheet to my new canvas. It's here. Now, I'm going to create a new layer on top of it. On the left, we have different themes, and on the right, you will see fashion styles. This will help us to create our character story. I want you to match and see what creative parts you can come up with. I want to pick school girl theme and tomboy style. But if you want to pick another theme and see how creative you can get then feel free. I also did this process with different matches, and I pair winter girl and artsy style. This is what I came up with. It's really fun to get creative and play around with different pairs. Once you pick your theme and facial style, I want you to close your cheat sheet layer, and in a new layer, start writing down a list of style items that associate with your theme. I pick school girl with tomboy style. I'm thinking my character can have a backpack, a handbag with school supplies. She will probably be a close friend with her phone and maybe she's listening to music, so she has headphones. If I go a little further, maybe my girl is an art student. She might be carrying pencils, papers, brushes, and sketchbooks in her bag. Then, I move into her style and think about what style item she might wear. If you feel like you don't know much about these fashion styles, you can just write punk or tomboy, or the name of any style you will pick in Google or Pinterest, and you can have a glimpse of your character style items. My character is a tomboy. Immediately what comes to my mind is that she wears very comfy clothes, maybe a bomber jacket, sneakers, beanies, sports pants. She also might have some jewelry that might fit into her style. There are so many things that I can associate with this theme. I don't know yet how my character is going to look like at this point. I want you guys to write down as many style items as you can. We are going to be saving this and using this later in our character. Once you start to write down some style items, I also want you to sketch some ideas down as well. I'm quite a visual person, I'm just sketching some of the ideas to help me just visualize how my character can look. I try to imagine her backpack. I also try to visualize her art supply bag with books, pencils, and more, and her headphones, she might have on-ear headphones or earbuds or maybe Bluetooth headphones. Then I tried to visualize her clothes like beanies or sneakers. There are so many different sneaker styles, maybe her sneakers are just very basic, or she might wear high-top basketball sneakers with [inaudible] I'm just going to play around with this brainstorming technique and keep coming with ideas and sketching. These all can go with my character, well. Our character will also have a dog as a company but, we will think about which dog breed she will have later. For the final product, I want you to pick your theme and style and then make a list of the things that are associated with your character's theme and style. Then head up to settings and save it as a jpeg. We are going to use this in our main project later. I want you to spend about 10 minutes for the list. Don't forget to try to visualize different style items you can match with your character. After finishing your list, join me in the next video where we are going to be diving into a mood boarding and inspiration. This is going to really help us set the look and feel for our characters. 10. Gathering Inspiration: So before we start illustrating our characters today, I think it's really important that we look for inspiration that help us set the look and feel for our characters. One of the size that I like to use to grab reference images is Pinterest. And sometimes when I'm on Instagram, and if I find something inspiring to me, I just take a screenshot. Once I have this collection of images that are inspiring to me, I start building a motherboard. You could build a mood board in Pinterest or drop mark is also really great. Or you could go through old fashion magazines and cut out some images and create a physical moodboard. Whatever you want to do. I think it's going to be great. Today. I'm going to show you how to pick reference images on Pinterest. So my character is a school Garvey tomboy style. And I have this mood board here. And I put together lots of photons that works well with my character's story. Main trick here is that you use all the keywords that you come up with in the earlier lesson. I think it's clever to first search for your style, like for me each or more style. And then go for the specific pieces like sneakers, sports pans, beanies, and so on. And you can always combine your keywords together with your style. For example, you can write sneakers and tambor style together, run your search. Another teen guy suggest here is that try not to focus on colors on your references. Because we will come to that later and we will work on our own color palettes. Okay, now that we have this mood board in place, I feel pretty confident that I can dive into those styling my character. Now, I want you to spend about 10 minutes pulling together a mood board for your character and use your characters keywords, why searching for your reference images. And in the next lesson, I will be showing you how I take all these reference images and bringing down each of my character. 11. Sketching Your Character: So in the last section, we gather a bunch of inspiration for the style of our character. And that really help offset to look and feel for our character style. And now we can play by sketching and mixing our reference images. So the first thing I do is to set up my art board, tap into plus sign icon and create a new custom column was. And I said my cousin was TO tree tells them by 3000 pixels and 300 DPI. And I always set my comb was two square shape because it fits best for Instagram and it's a good quality. And also it gives you a loss of layers to work with. Okay, so now that that's set, I'm going to bring my references to my car was and start sketching. So now that I have those mood board all sides, I'm just going to dive in into sketching and most likely playing around. First, I start working with their body posture of my character, just like I showed you earlier in the clause. So I like this course posture and I'm planning to go with this one. So I create a new layer. Then I pick my sketching color. I sometimes like sketching with colors instead of black. So I draw a triangle for her torso by referencing this carer. And then I continue with the legs in a really simple way. And this is a great way to get the basic shapes and pose long without feeling overwhelmed with too much details. Now I'm drawing her arms. I want to change the pose a little here. This one maybe hold something. And I want to draw the other ones straight. And the head. And of course the feats very basic. Okay, for now, I feel happy with my character's pose while I wanna play on it a little bit, my character's proportions. So I'm just going to open a new layer and you circle to help me define my characters proportion. When you decide your new proportion, you can lower down buffers. And in a new layer you can trace your final body shape. You don't need to draw the final by the shape. If you don't go for summer clothes like bikini, crop tops or Ezra, like right now for me, this very basic body posture will be enough. So now that I am happy with the overall pose, I'm just going to add dots fit in a new layer. So I want to start with this checkered and I don't worry too much about the accuracy at just point. Since she is a tomboy, I want her clothes to be comfortable. Like I'm going to draw oversized Bega clouds. And don't worry about drawing perfect hands. Just sketching down really roughly will be enough. I don't think you need to draw very realistic hands in your character illustrations are like drawing hands just as triangles. And that doesn't mean that I can't draw very realistic hands. It's just about your style. I really suggest experimenting and finding your style of eyelid. I think it can be more creative and less intimidating, Dan thinking, Pedro, all the fingers, right? And now I'm going to draw of sparse pens for Aristotle item I like working on different layers. They will have mouth later while cleaning overlapping lines. And then I'm adding shoes. I use my reference images as an inspiration, but I don't copy down directly. I tried to simplify them and add to my characteristics to the drawing. I want you to start getting a habit of changing your reference images enough on your sketches in order to create illustrations. That is totally yours. And I am adding up her beanie. To help me remember my characters keywords. I'm just going to open my character's story sheet on the site. I'm going to save up at the bottom and I drag and drop the photos on the site. So when you are creating your illustrations, I want you to look at your keywords and see if there are more solid items that you can add to our character. So I want to give her a hand bag full of art supplies and headphones connected to her phone. Now I want to draw her hair and I want to use my cheat sheet that I showed you earlier. So if you're struggling at this stage, please download the cheatsheet. I prepare for you. It's project and resources section below. So I want her hair to be long and straight, and I really live having her hair behind her shoulders. Next, I want to add a floral pattern to her jacket. I don't go in details at this moment. I had done just as an idea. Maybe I can do her hair curly. I'm just sketching out to see how it looks and decides which looks better. Okay, now I'm looking at my overall sketch and I think proportions is a bit off. So don't forget, if you are unhappy with some of the proportions, you can always go in and edit. Damn, I wanna make the head a bit smaller because I think it looks quite big according to her body. So I'm just going to select her hair and make it smaller, who just need to go over until you are happy with the overall sketch. And now I want to clean up a little bit and delete some overlapping lines to see my sketch more clear. It's going to be easy because I draw a rare items in different layers. Okay, Now it's my favorite part. We are going to sketch out a dog. Before that, I reorient my sketch on my car was to sketch your dog. You can use the Doc sheet I prepared for you. You can download it from the project and resources section. Okay, my cheat sheet on the side now, and I'm looking at the reference doc types and see which one fits better for my character. Okay, I think this one looks good. And now I'm going to use circles and triangles again to sketch out my dog. Okay, now I'm drawing a circle very roughly for the dog's head and another one for the dog's body, and very basic triangles for the legs. And then I continue with detail and ears. Then I get closer and sketch again in a new layer with more details. Okay, it looks good for the first sketch, but I think I want to play with the proportions are bad and I use the Select tool for that. Okay, I think it looks pretty good now. And I want to add style items to the rock as well. I want to see my character and her book as style bodies. So I'm thinking about matching outfits. Maybe I can add a CBT shirt to the dog as well. Maybe they can't have the same port or on their tops. And of course I being a I don't need this side panel anymore, so I just close it. I'm just adding the last details. Okay. It feels like this is my final sketch. Okay, Now it's your turn. Go ahead and create your character sketch. Just remember to get inspired by your character style sheet and work with lots of layers, hairstyles and Docs Sheets and the project and resources section. So don't hesitate to use damn. Okay, now that we have decided our final character sketch, join me in the next video, we will create our final line work for our character. 12. Refining Your Sketch: Okay. I'm quite happy with my overall sketch. Now let's start cleaning up our sketches. I'm going to lower the opacity of my sketch layer to about half way, and I'm going to add a new layer on top of my sketch layer. I'm using dry ink brush, which can be found in Inking folder in Procreate. Just a hard brush with a texture edge. What we're going to do here is just cleaning up this rough sketch marks and getting ready for the coloring process. I am making any required corrections as I go up or if I want to add more details I'm adding right now. A tip here for making your lines perfectly smooth, just draw your shape and hold on your pencil on your canvas. When creating your line work, you have two options. You can either create all your line work in one layer, which is much quicker to see your final sketch. Or you can create the line work of each item in different layers which will help you out later in the coloring stage. Drawing every item in different layers will also help you to clean overlapping lines easily afterwards. For example, I wasn't sure about her hairstyle during the rough sketching process, but I think I will go with straight hair now. As you can see, you can make your final decisions at this stage. I think it's really important to get the drawing in a place that you are really happy from the start because this is going to help you in the coloring stage and the rest. I think my character is too big for the canvas, so I want to rearrange that a little. So if you are working with many layers, sometimes it's easier to rearrange your canvas size instead of your sketch size. I do that especially if my canvas size is not that important. Like if I'm drawing something for Instagram, just for fun, don't forget to tap the Chain Link button between the height and width numbers. This locks the canvas shape when you re-arrange it. Okay, let's continue with the rest. Okay, here's my final detail sketch. As you can see, we created our story based on keywords and from our reference images, but still created a character with a friend that is totally ours. Now it's your turn. Go ahead and finish your line work of your final sketch and don't forget, this is where you decide all the details of your illustration. Building a Colour Palette: Now, that you have decided your refined sketch, you can start working on the fun part, which is color and in this lesson, we are going to be practicing creating our own color palettes for our characters. If you are having a hard time figuring out which colors you want to use, I think looking at reference images, even for colored, can be really helpful. Today, we will create a color palette using references from Pinterest, but feel free to collect pictures that you see online, anywhere, could be photographs or like ads, anything you'd like the colors, and how they are combined to each other. I suggest trying to find inspiration from as many different sources as you can, landscapes, interiors, ceramics, animals, especially birds, fashion, fashion photography. There are a lot of interesting color palettes there, just enjoy your time but I suggest spending 10 to 15 minutes on Pinterest to create your color mode board. Just remember that using different mediums, instead of looking at other illustrator's work will be more inspiring for you. Once you've finished pinning to your board, go back to your profile and have a look at images you have collected. I collected my color references under the name of color composition on my Pinterest, if you want to use my references, I will leave a link below. Collecting color references is a great way to get an idea of what colors you like in general. I'm quite into vibrant and light colors and you can really see that in my board. Now, I want you to get a screenshot of your color references board, I'm taking two screenshots to be able to get all the references I collected. I'm opening a new canvass in Procreate and now I'm bringing my reference images to my canvass. Just have an overview of all the photos you have collected and see if you can see certain colors that you're drawn to, or patterns and colors that you have chosen, these colors are going to be the base of your color palette. Now, we can start color picking, I'm using the eyedropper tool to select all of these colors for my color palette and I'm going to put down switches like this. Just have fun and try different color compositions and try to figure out which kind of color palette you want. I like to pick a color palette, maybe around five to six colors, but it really depends on your personal style. But then I don't limit myself to those exact colors, it's okay to add a little accent color here or there that are outside of your color palette. My first swatch was all about the pastel colors and on my second swatch, I'm thinking more vibrant, contrasting colors. I like this orange, I want to start with this one, blue is the contrasting color of orange, I want to add this nice blue. This yellow is good, I think I'm going to pair this with orange. I'm just trying to figure out which colors will go well together. Try not to put much pressure on yourself, just try to enjoy, you can always change some of the colors later if it doesn't fit in practice. Now, if you go Colors and then hit the Palettes, you can see all the different color palettes you have and you can just continue to add more and more as you wish. The first thing you need to do is just hit the plus sign in the right corner, that will create a new palette, and then you can name it as you like. Then you can just add your favorite color swatch to your new color palette, just use the eyedropper tool to pick your colors again. All done. Now it's your turn. For this lesson, I want you guys to create a mood board in Pinterest for your color inspiration. Then take a screenshot and bring it to your canvass and start creating your own color palettes from these images. Three Ways to Colour In: In this lesson, I'm going to show you two different metals that I'm using bi, I'm creating my layer comps and we will play around with colors by using these metals. It's a mini exercise to build your confidence by creating your color combs. And you will find out what's the best practice for your wild color blocking. Okay, I have my linework sketch that I created or a year. You can use your own sketch or you can download and use the exercise sheets are prepared for you. You can't find a download in the class details below. So to start, I merge all my layers into one layer. And then I'm just going to resize it small. I think working on small sketches speeds up the process while working on color combs. And we are going to start off by duplicating this sketch layer tour times. I swipe to the left to duplicate and just replace my new sketch layers to my commons. I sometimes resize my com was inside of resizing my layers. It just feels quicker in this way. Okay, all good, So let's start the coloring first method. It's fun, quick and kind of meditating for me. So to start, I create a new layer and I start with picking my background color first. I pick this soft blue color as my background color for my first color col. And then I put my background layer underneath my sketch. And now I can start to add colors. I have a library of colors to work bit. If you don't have one, don't worry. You can go with the colors you created in the earlier section or we can try to create one. Why practicing this exercise is my first color sketching method. I just click this sketch colors on the same layer while using my sketch layer as a guide. I like using drawing brush for this material. I really don't care about overlying my sketch. If I am planning to use one color more than once, I tried to paint those at the same time. And if I don't like one color, I just sketch that color on top of my old color again in the same layer. I like this method because it helps you to relax and stop you from overthinking on your color bigs. And I think it's fun and it always brings out the best results. Okay, now I'm going to turn off the black layer to see my color comb. Okay, looks good. Just adding the last black details. Now it's your turn, and I want you to use one of these colors as your background color. Here is my tip for you. When I work with this type of color background, I like using its complimentary color in one of my main pieces, in my illustrations. And none in other pieces. I like playing with different tones of this colors and use var1 colors to increase contrast against my blue. Down to lighten up my illustration, I like to add yellowish or pinkish whites. Laws are used very dark gray Charles, almost like Blake for details, and some more natural color. Okay, let's move on on our second color calm with our second sketch. And this one, I like using monoline brush. And again, I start with my background color in a new layer. For this method, I want you to experiment with a wide Burn darker color by current, you can use one of these colors I prepare it for you. Just take a screenshot and imported to your installation fire to color pick for this month old, I create a new layer for a writer. And I like to keep all these layers under the same group from the very beginning. This will help me to turn them off very quickly when I want to. Okay, so with my monoline brush, I quickly trace my sketch layer and create closed lines and non-drug and drop my color insight. I always use one colors in different spots in my illustration. So when I do that, I tried to keep them in the same layer. So this method is quite clear according to the first one. And when you need to change one color, what you need to do is just color dropping. It's very quick. Here's my tip to work with this color background. Since this color is very powerful, I tried to use one color, but it's lighter variations in my illustration. And another, why brown color to pop up in small details without overwhelming my overall drawing. Okay, toward mental workspace reference feature on Procreate. It's a pretty cool feature to fail your colors quickly while using your outliers as a reference. So I'm going to show you how to do that for this muddled, I want you to use very bright color as your background color. This method works better with a brush, without texture. So monoline brush works really good. At this point. I click on my sketch layer and choose, Select reference feature from the pop-up and non create a new layer and drag it below my reference layer. What I do is just creating a new layer for each color. That just helps me later to have a little bit more flexibility on editing. This method enables you to color drop without reading your sketch layer. The important thing is that you need very clean sketch lines. The brush you use should be a brush like a monoline brush, not a texture brush. Okay, here's my tip to work with my bright color background. I chose very soft colors in general, and now slightly darker Charles of these colors. And finally, a darker color in small items to create contrast and make my colors pop. Now it's your turn, and I want you to use one of these colors as your background color. So you just learn two different metals to fill-in your colors in your illustration and some tips on creating color codes with tre, different type color background. And since you practice with all of them, now you know what's worked best for you. Okay, it's your turn. I want you to try out these three methods while creating different color thumbnails for your illustration. I also want you to experiment with these three different background colors. Join me in the next video where I will be color blocking my illustration step-by-step. 15. Colour Blocking : So now you know more about color, color palettes and different ways to color in your illustration. So what we are going to do next is planning out our colors for our main project. And I will show you how I make my colors pop. So now you should have your sketch, all Penelope, salt start on colors. I have this little color palette saved here. These are the colors I'm going to be using for my illustration. If you click the default mark option here, and then I go back to my desk. And you will notice I have my color palettes here now. I like bringing my color palette on my commas as well. Just make sure that this is on a separate layer because you're going to want to turn this off later. Okay, I choose them blue, pink, and yellow as my main colors. And non chosen darker or lighter shades of these scholars and empty gangrene can create a great contrast to these colors. Okay, let's figure out a way to make that color palette work with this illustration. I always start with my background color first, just so we know that when I'm coloring my character, the colors I'm using are always working with the background. I really feel like I want the background to be a light color. So I will create a new layer underneath my line work and fill this with the light yellow. I pick our layer. I like keeping a background color palette among my color palettes. And I will suggest to do the same for you. Okay, now let's continue with the biggest pieces on our growing. I want to use reference tool feature of iam deciding my clerical. So I click on the line work layer and tap on the reference feature. Then I create another layer on top of it, and now I can start dropping my colors. Reference feature is a pretty cool feature because it allows you to feel your colors quickly on a separate layer from your sketch. I like to start with her jacket. I think this reddish orange color will work quite well with my background color, with the reference feature on, I just need to drag and drop my color is to quickly fill out the parts. I want to continue with her pens. I want her pants to contrast with her jacket. So I'm planning to go something close to its complimentary color, and blue is the complementary color to orange. Don't worry if you don't know about complimentary colors, just click on your color. And then click Harmony. And then select complimentary. And 9-year we see the complimentary color of your selected color. So this blue is quite bright. So instead of using this very bright blue, you can play with saturation and brightness until you are happy with the result. Okay, let's continue. So I want her jacket to have a bit more contrast. So I want to add red on the details of her jacket. So basically using contrasting colors to make sure my subjects stand out is one of the main focuses of my drawing. The blood can be distracting sometimes to actually see the contrast between the colors. So sometimes I turn it off and you can't see from here that it shows the colors much by there. Now, I want a quantity with the different tones of blue in different elements. So I want to paint her back blue as well. I like putting agriculture in the composition at this a couple of times. I think it helps to add the overall continuity of a piece. So I want to use this blue in her dogs short as well. And I can use her pants blue in the colors to increase contrast. And maybe her socks can match with her jacket. I like playing with colors a lot, so I would like to add purplish blue in some of the pieces, like at her shoes top or at some of the items in her back. But if you are struggling with color harmony, I really suggest you to have a limited color palette. So I just tried to figure out my color composition to be more finalized. And really just work on getting the colors to work out together within the composition. Okay, so let's turn off the black layer. And so far my illustration looks like this. Maybe I can't change her skin color to have a bit more contrast with the background. So I'm going to adjust that a little. If you go back and realize that certain color your pig didn't work. That's why we are doing this. So it's really easier to make changes and adjustments if it's needed. You can see that now the contrast is much better between the background and her skin tone. So I just continue with my peers. Okay. All done. I think I'm happy with the results so far. So now go ahead and take our linework, create a new layer, and start planning out your colors. So now that I have my color code and I'm quite happy how it's all working together. And the next video, I'm going to apply my final colors on my character. 16. Adding Colour and Texture: So now you have your colors all pin odd. So we are ready to apply our final colors with our favorite brushes and create texture. So to start, I'm going to copy my color comp sketch. I like keeping the original one. And then I make it smaller and bring it to the top right corner. And I'm going to reference this by applying by colors to my illustration. I want you to really trust the decisions that you've made in your color, calm, and don't try to make too many changes at this point because you're already pin out your character. I also keep my color palette layer or my co-workers as well. And I'm just going to put it right over here so they are easier to access. So now that we have all the colors, I'm going to turn on my sketch layer and lower the opacity of my sketch layer. Because I want our sketch layer to be more of a guide. So I like to add a new layer right underneath my sketch layer. So if I open brushes and our right here on the top, I have my where I sat. And most of the brushes I use are in here. I actually have slightly modified versions of original procreate brushes. So I really suggest you to create your own custom brush set by tweaking the settings for your brush and collect most use and modify brushes under the same set so they are easy to access. And I'm just going to quickly show you how I create a new Bryce said, first, tap on the brush icon and at the very top of the list of bright side, you will see a plus button. Tap on that and create a new brush set. Now drag and drop your brushes into it. And you can also name your new brush set. Okay, let's continue with our illustration for my outlines. I'm going to go with dry ink brush sold to foreign dry ink brush. I tap on inking brush set, and dry ink brush is right over here. I like it quite clean. Look. To reach that. I go to my brush settings and on the stroke Pat, I like to keep the jitter feature at lowest, like almost none. And you can see how borders of your brush change right over here. So I start to create my outline's first. I start with Hoj could. So I'm just tracing over my sketch and then drop my color in. Okay, Now I want to use my eraser brush to separate arms. If you want to delete some parts, don't forget to change your eraser brush to the brush you use. So you will keep the same texture on your outlines. So I just made it completely red and which is not what I actually wanted to do. This is just the base color. Now I go to my layers and tap on the Alpha Lock feature and go back in and undo this salmon color over the top of this one. Or I go back to my layers and then create a new layer on top of my sketch layer and tap on clipping mask and I start to paint. But as you can see, this brush texture is not so strong and I want to make it stronger. So I'm going to civic my brush settings a little bit. So I go to brushes and duplicate my brush layer and play a little bit adjustments. I want more texture on my brush, so I like keeping the grain dab a little higher. I'm also increase the scale a bit more. As you can see now I have more texture on my brush. By the way, you can also change the name of your new brush. That will help you to remember where you want to use this new brush. So I want to name it texture brush. Okay, now I'm ready to paint. I kind of get a little bit of red showing true. If I over paint with my texture brush, it just gives a little bit more live down, just a flat color. I want to continue with the details of her jacket. First, I create a new layer and I'm keeping each element of the color on a separate layer that has made to change things if it's needed. Now I want to paint my pattern. I don't want to overwhelm my illustration with overlapping texture, so I keep my pattern a bit more calm with minimal texture brush. You can always go play with brush adjustments as you wish. Just don't forget to save your earlier brush. Okay, I want to use monoline brush. Why drawing my patterns? So now I'm just tracing over my sketch in a new layer. So I'm doing this same process for a rhizome or my illustration. Don't forget to create a new layer. And then when it comes to texture, tried to keep a balance in the overall illustration. Don't be afraid to experiment with your brush settings. So go ahead now and finish adding colors and texture to our character is saturation. 17. Final Thoughts: Thank you so much for taking your time to watch this class. I hope you now have more confidence when it comes to creating your characters, stories, and drawing them in your own style. We learned a lot, not just about drawing people and dogs, but also half to make your characters more interesting and eye-catching. Now it's some practice more and more.
