About This Class

Are you looking for new ways to get creatively inspired?

Hi, I’m Elisabeth and welcome to my class Bite Sized Art Techniques: Sound Line Doodles. I'm a professionally trained artist and art educator and I love finding ways to explore creativity and art making. And I love finding inspiration in other areas and finding new ways to work in my sketchbook.

In this quick bite-sized art technique class we'll explore the inspiration we can draw from sound to make new types of marks and llines.

By the end of this class you’ll have

  • Looked to sound, music, and sound effects for mark making inspiration
  • Used a variety of media to create new marks and lines
  • Created a sound line doodle inspired by sound, music, and sound effects

I hope you’ll join me in this fun class as we get inspired by sound and music.

Hi, I'm Elisabeth Wellfare a United States based artist and art educator with seventeen years high school Art teaching experience. In 2017 I published my first children's book which I illustrated and authored called The Dinosaur Family. Then in 2024 I added some new Dinosaur family members and created a "for all ages" coloring book. Both publications are available through my website. When not creating art or teaching I am taking care of my two adorable boys Oliver and Winston. They love to get into mom's art studio and create alongside me.

I love exploring a wide range of art media including ink, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, embroidery, and photography to name a few. I take any chance I get to work on mixed media artworks and push the boundaries of how to create. ... See full profile

1. Introduction Bite Sized Class Sound Doodle: Hi. I'm Elizabeth and welcome to my Bite Size class, Sound Line Doodles. I am a professionally trained artist and art educator, as well as a published author illustrator. In 2020, I began teaching for Skillshare, developing classes that explore a wide range of materials, techniques, and art making approaches, as I share my creative journey and artistic practices with my students. In this class, we look to audio sound clips, sound effects, music for inspiration for the different lines that we make, the marks that we work with, and the colors and art media that we choose. This class is intended for creatives well skill levels as a sketchbook exercise, a creative warm up and inspiration for future art making. You need is a piece of paper, whatever art supplies you happen to have on hand, and I provide you with lots of audio clips to pick from. So join me in this quick bite size skill share class. 2. Bite Sized Sound Line Doodles: I love finding inspiration all over the place, and that includes in audio tracks and sound clips and music. So in this class, I wanted to explore what marks we can make inspired by the sounds that we hear. So I selected a variety of sound effects, like water dripping, and the feeling that evokes from kind of a scary jaws type soundtrack to see what kind of marks would come out on the page when I used the sound is the inspiration for the way that my different art media applied itself to the paper. So different line quality, different mas, and then I jumped around a bunch with different media. So I've got brush pens, colored pencil, sharpie, and ran. O And as I went along, I started returning to different media and returning to different marks and sound effects to kind of inspire me further. Things that I really enjoyed doing, I circled back to, and then I also started thinking about composition. So this started off as a fairly random intuitive line in mark making doodle. And then as I went, I kind of where those marks went and circled back to things and colors purely based on an intuitive gut reaction to the audio tracks and the experience of working with those different sounds and media. T. So for your own sound line, Doodle, you can work with the sound effects that I share in the projects and resources section of our class, or you can look for your own music tracks or sound effects. I used Pixabay to find the different audio tracks that I used for this class for the Royalty free option, so I could share them with you. And that is a really great resource for audio of all needs anytime you want to do this. So the idea behind this kind of art exercise is it's a great way to get creating. It's an interesting way to find inspiration. And then I can return to these different marks and lines in future work and kind of use it as a jumping off point for even more art making down the road. I love doing this kind of stuff in my sketchbook as a warm up and kind of a creative energizer. And then once you get going and you kind of have a nice flection from here on out, I just decided to add whatever I felt the composition needed. So this is a part where I departed from the audio inspiration and used the way that the marks broke up the paper and the negative space and the overlap sections to then further emphasize foreground and background and middle ground by putting in some sketchy, solid color that worked with the colors that I ended up using in the picture, but also then gave it kind of some grounding. And then I found out that I really wanted to add a further pop of contrast. So I wanted to go back in with the sharp beak. And by doing the loop de loops closer together, it created a bolder line because it becomes more dark marks together. So I just kind of went around the different shapes and added it that way. So I can't wait to see how your sound line doodle turns out. You can share those over on the project section of class, and I'll see you next time.
