1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi friends, how are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. You do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project, I will take you step-by-step through all the steps that you need to take. Today, we are going to be creating this cute penguin and an umbrella on a rainy day. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a piece of watercolor paper. You will need some watercolor paints and a paintbrush. I'm going to use this size paintbrush, but just use what you have available to you. You will need a cup or a bowl with clean water and a black oil pastel or a black crayon and a paper towel. Go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials. And I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Penguin Design: In this step we are going to draw our penguin designs. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to talk about where our penguin is going to go on our sheet of paper. Are penguins going to go down here at the bottom left? And the umbrella is going to come up here on the top right. We're going to start by drawing our penguin. Go ahead and pick up your oil pastel or your crayon. And what you're going to do is come pretty close to the bottom, but not touch it maybe about two or three inches up from the bottom, that would be about four or five centimeters. What we're going to do is we're going to make the letter C. And the opening to the letter C is going to be facing down. If you turned your sheet of paper to the side this way, then you can see that it's a letter C. Now let's close up that letter C at the bottom. Now this is going to be the face and the body for our penguin. As you can see, it's going to be a cartoon penguin, so it's not that realistic. Alright, so let's create some features inside the head and the body of our penguin. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to make another straight line towards the bottom. Then we're going to follow around with another see that closes up at the bottom and it attaches to this inside line. Now what we're going to do is create a face inside of this shape. I'm going to make some eyes. And if there are different eyes that you'd like to make, go ahead and do that. I'm going to make a little nose for my penguin. Then I'm also going to make some cheeks here with my pink, but I'm not going to be marking on my paper for that. This is his nose in his mouth and his eyes. The next thing that we're going to do is we are going to give our penguin some wings. And these wings aren't the flying type of wings, but they do look like they're flying underneath the water. Alright, so I'm going to come down and come back in because I don't have that much room over here on this side, you might have more room than I do. Then for this wing, I'm going to have it come up and then come back down because this penguin is going to be holding an umbrella. Now the next thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to add some feet down here at the bottom. Cute little feet. Now it's time to make the umbrella. So I'm just going to make the umbrella on this side. If you'd like to use this whole space, you can go ahead and do that. I'm going to make just a curved line. It's like an upside-down letter U. Then underneath here I'm going to make some curved lines that are hooked together like this. Then I'm going to make a line coming down to the wing. And another line coming down to the wing, jumped down, curve and curve. If you'd like to, you can create some designs on your umbrella. If you'd like, for example, you can make some stripes like this. Then even make something at the top if you'd like. I'll make a little hard. I don't know if you can see that. All right, let's come down here and put some lines right here so our penguin can still be standing on the ground. Then the last thing that we're going to do is we're going to add some raindrops. Raindrops are a little bit more narrow at the top and a little bit thicker down below. I'm making large rain drops. If you want to make smaller raindrops, you can do that. But what I'm going to do is I'm just going to fill in some spaces with some raindrops. If you're raindrops aren't exactly this shape, that's okay. You can make round raindrops if you'd like to, but let me just show you how to make a raindrop in case you want to make this kind. You're going to start at a point. You come down, come around with a curved line in New, come back up to the point. That looks awesome. All right, friends. So go ahead and fill in this space in a way that you want to the background space. And when we come back, we will start applying some watercolor paints. 3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we are going to apply some watercolor paints to our design. Let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add a drop or two of water into each pan of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up the paints just a little bit so they are easier for us to use. It's a really important step to take to make painting easier. Let's take a moment to do that. Now that those paints are softening up, Let's turn our attention to our design. So I have my penguin and I have a lot of drops of rain. And I have a cute umbrella. And I have the background and the ground right here. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to start painting, but I'm going to paint the penguin, the black part of the penguin, which is this part right here. Last because I usually paint with the black last because it's the strongest and most powerful color. All right, so let me show you what I'm going to do first. I am going to make some cheeks for my Penguin because I like that. I like really light pink cheeks. I take a tiny amount of pink. I paint those cheeks first thing. First thing if they get too dark, what I like to do is I like to take my handy-dandy paper towel in, touch them just a little bit and it will bring up some of that pink. That's what I like to do because I like my pink to be pretty light. Now that I have my cheeks painted pink, what I'm going to do next is I'm going to start painting my drops. Then I will move on to my umbrella. And the background. I'm going to go ahead and speed up the video and you can watch me. It'll just take me a minute because it will look like I'm speed painting, but I'm really taking my time. I'll see you back here in just a minute. All righty friends. As you can see, I'm finished painting my design, everything except for the black on the penguin which I left for last on purpose. I wanted to mention, remember, if you'd like a stronger, more vibrant color, you add more paint. And if you want a softer color, you add more water. And that's what I did for the background because I didn't want it to be too dark. When we come back, we will paint our penguin. 4. Step 3: Paint the Penguin: In this step we are going to apply some black paint to the outside of our penguin, his wings and his feet. Let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is prepare our black paint. So I'm going to put a little bit of water into one of my wells. And I'm going to add a small amount of black. And my penguins not going to be a really dark black, more of a grayish color like this color looks really good to me. You get to make your penguin as light or as dark as you'd like. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to take my time. And every time I feel like I need to reload my paintbrush, I'm going to do that with my black paint. Already friends, I'm finished painting black onto my penguin. I am really happy with the way that this artwork turned out. I hope that you've had a lot of fun. I had a lot of fun teaching this project. I will see you next time.
