1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi friends, how are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all. To feel successful in this project. I will guide students step-by-step through all the steps that they need to take. Today, we are going to be creating this folk art cat. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a bowl or a cup with clean water. You will need one or two paintbrushes. I'm going to be using to paint brushes, but just use what you have available to you. I used the larger paint brush for the larger areas on my artwork and the smaller paint brushes for those little small areas. You will also need a pencil with an eraser and a permanent marker. Permanent means that the marker, the ink in the marker will not spread around on your piece of paper if you add water to it. So you'll need a permanent marker and a paper towel. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials. And I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Folk Art Cat Design: In this step we are going to draw our cat design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is pick up our pencil and we're going to find the middle of our piece of paper. The middle of my piece of paper is right here. We're going to go up just a little bit from the middle, in a little bit from each side. And we're going to make a curved line. I'm going to press pretty hard with my pencil, but you don't need to press this hard. I'm pressing hard because I wanna make sure that you can see this on the video. I'm going to go about that far. And then I'm going to close this shape up with another line coming down, curve line. Then I'm going to close up like that. And then if I have any extra little line hanging out at the end, I'll just erase that. Remember, you can erase anytime you feel like you need to. Now what we're going to do is make some eyes on our cat. This is the cat's head. This is a stylized cat, so it's not a realistic looking cat. So keep that in mind as you're creating. So I'm going to make an I here and it's going to be a curved line. And then another curved line closing up about the same shape as the head of our cat, only a lot smaller. Then I'm going to do the same thing over here. Another eye, if they're not exactly the same size or the same shape, that's okay. Alright, so I have my two eyes here. Now what I'm going to do is I am going to fill in with two lines here. It's going to be the pupil of my cat. Now I'm going to come up to the top of the head. I'm going to make two straight lines. One coming out the side. When coming out the side, these are going to be the outer edges of the ears. And then we're going to come back down with another line. So that'll turn those ears into triangles. Now let's add a nose here for our cat. So I'm just going to add a triangle nose here at the bottom of this shape. And then I'm going to add a couple of whiskers, just maybe two or three whiskers, I think too well, look nice. There we go. Now let's make the body of our cats. So we're going to come down here below the head. And we're going to make two lines. They're pretty long. Cats next are not usually this long. But remember this is not a realistic drawing of a cat. So we have two lines coming down for the neck. Then we're going to curve off with a line, come down, curve around, and then come back up. It's almost like a light bulb shape right? There we go. So this is the neck and the body of the cat. Let's make some feet down here at the bottom. So our cat can walk around. Then let's make a tail. You get to choose which side of the body you'd like the tail to be on. I'm going to choose this side. I'm going to start about right here. Can make your tail is swirly or straight, or as long or as short as you'd like. There we go. Alright. Then we are not going to put the cats arms here because we're going to create a design right here on the tummy. Okay? Now what we're going to do is we are going to put our pencil down because we are finished creating our cat, the actual cat drawing. And we're going to add the details with our marker. So we're first going to cover our cat with the marker. And then we're going to add some details with the marker without using the pencil. Alright, so let's take a moment to cover all of these pencil lines with our marker. Alrighty friends. I'm finished covering almost all of my pencil lines with my marker. The last two lines that I need to cover are these eyes, the pupils. So I'm going to go ahead and do that and I'm going to make them pretty thick. So they really stand out. See how I'm doing that. Now what we're going to do is we are going to add some details to this drawing. So what we're going to do is we're going to first add some flowers up here at the top if you'd like to. And we're just going to go right over the lines. We're going to go right over the top of the head line and the ear. Alright, so the flowers are going to be more on this side. So the type of flower that I'm going to make is going to be a circle. Then as I'm coming to the top of the circle, I'm just going to add a spiral like that. I'm going to add several of these type of flowers. This marker is a really squeaky, just going to keep adding until I feel that it's the right time to stop. Alrighty. Now the next step is we're going to add some designs to the background and to the body of the cat. So let's just start with the body of the cat. Let's add some designs to the body. So think of some different types of shapes and lines that you might want to add. You can add anything that you'd like to the body. I'm going to show you some examples. And then you can either follow what I do or you can choose your own different patterns. So I like hearts, so I'm going to make hearts across this part of the body. I'm going to make a large flower right here. Then I'm going to maybe make some lines right here. Notice how I'm trying to keep things pretty symmetrical. Symmetrical, meaning one side is the same as the other. I know we have a tail here. It's not symmetrical because we don't have a tail over here. We have flowers on this side of the head, but we don't have them over here. Not everything is going to be symmetrical. But when we create on the background, we're going to try to be pretty symmetrical. It's symmetrical as we can. I have my hearts and my lines and my flower. I think I'm happy with that. I'm going to stop there. So you can fill in this whole space if you'd like, or you can just put a little bit of patterns, a little bit of shapes and lines. Now let's go to the background of our drawing and let's start adding different types of shapes and lines and dots. Okay? So remember, we are trying to keep things symmetrical. So if you add something to this side of your piece of paper, then you need to do the same thing over on this side. Okay? So for example, I'm going to make a circle here. And then I need to make a circle here. If I'm going to make some panels here for a flower. And I'm going to do the same thing over here. Maybe I'll add some dots here. But I'm not going to put them over here because of the flowers. Actually, maybe I can put a couple here. Here we go. All right, so I'm just going to move down my piece of paper and I'm just going to start adding lines and shapes. And when I add a line or a shape to this side, I'm going to do the same thing on this side. As you can see. I tried to be as symmetrical as possible. However, there are certain areas where I couldn't be and that's okay. For example, there's a tail here and a flower here. I thought that that would look nice. It kind of balances out each side. So when we come back, what we will do is we will start adding paint to our design. 3. Step 2: Paint the Background: In this step we are going to add some paint to our design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add a drop or two of water into each pan of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up our paint just a little bit so it is going to be easier for us to use. So I always encourage students to take a moment to add a little bit of water to their paints to soften those up. Now that our paints or softening up, Let's turn our attention to our design. So what we're going to do this time for this particular artwork is we are going to paint the background first. So we're going to choose one color to paint the background. So think and consider carefully. I think I'm going to choose the color orange. I really like the color orange for backgrounds. And think ahead as to what color you'd like to paint your cat. I'm going to paint my cat black. And I think that the black will look great against the orange. I was either going to choose orange or pink, and I did decide on orange because I'd like to paint a lot of my flowers pink. Alright, so think about the color you'd like for the background. Think about the color you'd like for your cat. And what we're going to do first is paint the background. So we're going to paint everything except for any of the shapes. And we're not going to be painting the cat right now either. So it's going to be pretty challenging because we have a lot of shapes to go around. So take your time if you need to use your smaller paintbrush for certain areas that really tight areas, go ahead and use your smaller paintbrush if you need to. Let's get started. Alrighty friends. I'm back and I'm finished painting the background orange. I really like the way that it looks. I tried my best, but I did get a little bit of paint inside some of the flowers. If that happens to you, please don't worry about that. That's not that big of a deal. When we come back, we will paint the details. 4. Step 3: Paint the Details: In this step, we are going to paint our details on our design. So let's get started. So the details are anything that is not the actual cat's head or ears or body. We're going to save those shapes for the next step. So any flowers or swirls or hearts or circles that you have on your piece of paper. That's what we're going to paint. In this step. If you have a flower in some hearts or any designs on your cat, we're going to paint those on this step. So think about the colors that you'd like to use. You can use any colors that you'd like. Because my cat is black, I'm not going to be using any black for my details. If you have the option of a larger paintbrush and a smaller paintbrush, go ahead and use the one that you'd like. If you only have one paintbrush. That's okay. Just use that paintbrush. Sound good. All right. I'm going to just start here at the top. And I am going to paint in my different shapes that I have. If my watercolor paint starts running around, I'm not going to worry about it too much. That's just what watercolor paints do. They love to spread around? Alrighty friends. I'm finished painting my details and I'm really, really happy with those. I wanted to explain how I made these roses, these little flowers. I just took my paint and instead of covering every inch of space, I just put a swirl inside, a swirl of paint inside each flower. And I went like this and I left a little bit of white, I want it a little bit of white fur, a little highlight to be in there. So when we come back, we will be painting our cat. 5. Step 4: Paint the Cat: In this step we are going to paint our cat. So let's get started. I've decided to paint my cat black. You can use any color or colors that you'd like to paint your cat. I'm going to prepare some black paint by putting a little bit of water into one of my wells and then adding some black paint. Black is a very strong color. So I don't need very much in my well to get a really nice dark color. My color is probably going to be more gray than black, but here let me make it a little bit darker. But I really like that as well. I like dark gray. Alright, so what I'm going to do is I'm going to start painting my actual cat. And I'm going to speed up this video and I'll see you back here in just a minute. Alrighty friends. I'm finished painting my cat. I really liked the way that it turned out. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project. I will see you next time. 6. SKILLSHAREreviewASK: Thank you for enrolling in this course.
