1. Introduction: Hello everyone, welcome to
my first Skillshare class. I'm going to go shoot as an
artist based out of India. First of all, I would like
to thank you all for joining me in this fight is
of Glasgow escapes. Talking about myself. I'm a postgraduate from Indian Institute of Science
Education and Research, also known as ISO. After graduation, I
used to be an artist. The reason behind
that is quite simple. Let me explain. Art enables us to find ourselves and Lu faxes at the same time. A famous quote from
Thomas Martin. Then this is what
happened to me in 2021. After graduating, I
took a break from everything else and
started my art journey. And this was something that
genuinely made me happy. So I slowly started exploring
various mediums and learn the basics through YouTube, Instagram,
and Pinterest. I also started my own
artists on Instagram. You can find me on
Instagram under the handle, artifacts by a and it almost
took a year and a half for me to realize that
art was something that I wanted to do for
the rest of my life. And here we are. So that's all about me. Now let's talk a little
about our class. In this class we'll be creating five different skies case
using the medium gouache. Class is structured
such that even an absolute beginner who
has no idea about gouache can join in and learn alone without any further delay. Let's move on to our next topic, which is the projects.
2. About the Project: Nothing. So it's just like watching
a beautiful sky, right? So why don't we
try painting them? Yes, in this class
we will be painting not just one but phi
different sky escapes, starting from a simple blue
sky to a super fluffy one. Then, as mentioned earlier, this class is the
beginner's guide to gosh, there are few basic
techniques that one needs to know in order to
improve their skills. Then painting the sky skis can actually help you practice
those basic skills. Subtest, blending, layering,
adjusting the consistency, and so on in an easy
and enjoyable way. So why don't we try blending two colors into
beautiful sky painting. For a class project, I chose phi different sky
escapes that are quite simple, yet delivers a lot of
help progress exercises. This class is an absolute
beginner friendly. We'll be covering
everything from the basics. Literally, this class
is open for everyone. But before we directly
get into our projects, Let's get to know some
basics of gouache.
3. What is Gouache: First, let's talk a little
about what crashes. Gosh, is often referred
to as opaque watercolors, or is otherwise called as a hybrid of watercolors
and acrylics. They are basically opaque, water-soluble medium that gives a matte finish one stride, which can also be reactivated
with the help of water. Wash has a higher pigment
ratio than watercolor does, and it's designed to be opaque. Gouache can also be used directly from the tubes as
thick and opaque paints. Being water-soluble, you can use water to thin down the paint so that it can be
used as Tim and also transparently
just like watercolors. It's ideal to work
from thin to thick. That is, you start your work
with diluted paints and gradually build up the opacity by adding less and less water. Because of this opaque property, you can either work from light
to dark or dark to light. You just have to make sure
that you don't reactivate. The layers below. Gloss dries quicker and
gives a matte finish. And like acrylics, which
gives a glossy effect. Here, once the paint is dried, you can easily
reactivate with water, which is not a possible thing. In case of acrylic, this is actually helpful in reactivating any leftover
paints from your palate. Now, let's move on to the
consistency of paint. Starting with the brush, I'm taking a little moisture off with the help of a cloth or tissue and I'm taking a fresh amount of
paint from the tube. This is the most opaque
form of this color. And you can see that the cost doesn't spread
smoothly on the paper. And you're getting
a dry texture here. Now you can slowly start adding in more water to the squash. On doing so, you reach
a state where you get this really nice
creamy consistency. The color is still opaque here, but if you add more
water to this, you lose this property and
end up in transparent layers. This shows how water plays a
key role in maintaining the. Moving on to layering. Since gosh can be
reactivated with water, it is highly recommended to keep these points in mind
by layering our paint. Make sure your first
layer of paint is dry before you start
with the second layer. This actually helps you to our the bleeding of these
two colors together. If you're already working
on an opaque layer, make sure you don't reactivate this layer with diluted paints, even overdoing a
few brush strokes can also reactivate
the paint below. So in such cases you can use paints with less water in it. These are pretty much
the basics of gouache.
4. Blending techniques: Now let's take a look at
few blending techniques. Let's start with a
basic fading effects by using a color with white. Here I'm taking ultramarine blue and I'm starting
with a Dr. player, and I'm slowly fading it
out with the help of white. This can be done by
gradually adding more white into the mixture
as we move down. Also, you need to maintain the creamy consistency
for a smooth blocking. In case you feel the
need to clean the brush, you can very well do it. I mainly do it before adding
the pure white bottom layer. You can sweep the brush back and forth to get a smooth blend. In the end, I clean my brush and with the help
of a wet brush, I lightly brush onto the places that it has to be blend a little more smoothly. Now let's replace white
with some other color. Let's say blue and rows. And we will be following the
same procedures as before. We can also blend these two
colors by blocking the colors separately in both halves and then blending it
together in the middle. There, they meet with
the help of a wet brush. Make sure you have enough paint
to work on this blending. In the same way you can do
a lot of color transitions. These are the basic
blending techniques. Next, let's take a
look at the materials.
5. Materials Required: Moving on to the materials
required for the papers, watercolor paper works fine and any paper that can withstand a few layers of
pain does the job. 300 DSM is an ideal
paperweight for gouache. These are few sketch
books and papers that I use for my
gouache paintings. I mostly prefer
using xanthan gum, scratch paper for this purpose. There are no special
gosh brushes. You can use watercolor or any synthetic brushes
of your choice. He made me a brushes are my
top favorite in that case. As for the paint, gosh, I mostly available in twos and these are Jelly
Gouache sets that are available in cups when I started my journey with Bruce,
true guar step. Apart from this, you need a mixing plate or two
cups or jars of water, a cloth, and a masking tape. And yeah, that's it. Now, let's move on to our
very first guy escape.
6. Project 1 : Simple Blue Sky: Let's start our class project
with a simple blue sky. These are the materials
that we need. 300 GSM paper, gouache
paints, paint, brushes, mixing plate,
deep cloth and water. First, let's mask the edges. For the background sky will be taking ultramarine
blue and white. Now let's start
mixing these two. We can see that the
paint is thick, so we are adding some water
to get a nice consistency. Since the blue looks dull, we're adding more ultramarine blue to make it look vibrant. We have achieved the
creamy consistency. Now, let's start blocking the entire paper with this blue. By the time this layer dries. Let me show you a few easy
ways to paint clouds. By using the semi me I brush. I'm taking some white
colors straight from the tube and I'm randomly
making some strokes. I'm adding a thick layer here. But make sure that you
don't use diluted ones as it can reactivate the
blue layer that is below. You can also carry this process
using a thin round brush. I'm randomly making few clouds. As the clouds don't
have a defined shape, you can very well go with
their own imaginations. In the next method we'll be making this pattern of strokes, which some work looks like a u, will be repeating this process till we get the desired shape. Next, we're using a
flat brush to make some free horizontal
strokes for the clouds. These are a few ways to paint the clouds using this method, Let's make our clouds. I'm repeating the
same process till I get the clouds of my choice. I'm also painting
the clouds the same way in random places
as you can see. Now, let's make some black with white to give some effects. So I'm painting the bottom side of the clouds with this color. I'm repeating the
same process for every other Cloud.
Loads are done. Let's move on to
the electrical post first and getting it down
to avoid any mistakes. Basically, I'm
drawing the letter T with some wire connections. You can choose your own
reference for this. So after sketching, I'm painting the whole
sketch with black. Once this is done, I'm mixing black with a little white to highlight the portions. As you can see, that
alpha skyscrapers done. I hope you are understood
the process well. Now let's move on to
our second project.
7. Project 2 : Starry Night sky: Now we'll be painting
a starry night sky. For that, we need a 300
GSM paper mixing plate, water, tissue or cloth, tape, paint brushes
and cause pain. Let's first mosque pages. You can see that the
dark blue is fading out as we go down this guy
for the background sky, we're taking viridian green
bush in blue and black. Now with the help
of a wet brush, Let's start mixing the colors. I'm adding equal amount
of blue and viridian. Now I'm adding a little bit
of black to this mixture to make it a little darker
as it is the night sky. I'm taking enough paint on the brush and I'm
blocking the top layer. Now I'm taking the
mixture that was without black to
block the next layer. I'm going back and forth
to blend the two layers. I'm repeating the process with
a lighter blue each time. In order to bring
the fading effect, we are adding white
to this mix slowly. As we go down. We are repeating
the process till we get the required fading effect. After this, we use a clean wet brush to blend
the areas if required. For this tiny effect, we are taking a little
white and adding water to it with the help of another
brush or anything similar. Just tap your brush
that has TO paint, make sure you don't add a lot of water as it can
spoil your painting. Another method is by taking
the paint using a toothbrush and spraying it in case
you add more water. This is what happens. With the help of
a pointed brush. You can add details like this. With the leftover dark color. We can add a little white to
it to paint the mountains. Now with the help
of black paint, Let's paint a nearest mountains. I'm first outlining mushy
and then filling the colors inside that we have painted
our study night sky. Now let's move on to
our project three.
8. Project 3 : Sunset Sky: Our third project
is a sunset sky. For that, we require
300 GSM paper brushes, gouache paints, cloth, tape, water, and mixing plate. As you can see, we'll be doing a transitional blending
of all these colors, followed by the sea entries
for that we are taking lemon, yellow, followed by a red, blue, viridian,
black, and white. Let's stay the edges. For the top layer. Let's mix blue, viridian, and the lessee bit of black. You can also add a little
water and keep them ready. But before that, let's
mark the line there. This guy ends starting
and with yellow. Now let's slowly make the transition sheets by
mixing media allude to this. Add more yellow as
we proceed upward. Once this is done, let's slowly increase
the amount of red as we keep going upward. Now let's start adding
the dark color to this mixture and repeat
the same procedure. After this via using the
red and orange mixture from my palette to make few
strokes for the clouds. For the seat, I'm adding
more blue and black and white to this previously
prepared mixture. Let's fill this remaining
to start with this color. After this, let me show you
how to draw a coconut tree, starting with a line that has to be thicker at the bottom. Imagine this to be the center of a circle and start
making lines from it. Due to gravity, the lease on these lines would be almost
perpendicular to the ground. So this is how we
will be doing it. Once you've finished
getting this, you can directly paint
over it. With this idea. Let's paint our trees. Before we start painting, Let's mark where the
trees has to be. After that, Let's start
painting on trees. I'm repeating this process
with empty other tree. Before the trees, we could
have added reflections, but it's completely okay. Let's add a few
lines of reflections using yellow or orange
colors from my palette. Using black, I'm painting
the surface where the trees, or you can also add fuel
grasses here in that. It's painted around
son with white. You can use yellow to show
the reflections on the water. And we are done. This is how it looks in the end. Now let's move on to
our next project.
9. Project 4 : Pink Sky: Project four is a pink sky. For that, we require
gouache paints, 300 GSM paper, paint brushes, mixing plate, cloth,
tape, and water. For this guy, you need hot
pink rose, fopen and white. After masking the edges, Let's mark the center, followed by a line
just below it. So this is where the
mountains would be. With a wet brush. We are taking purple for the top sky layer via using rose for
the next layer below. It looks a little dark, so I'm adding a little
white to make it light, and I'm repeating the process. Same way. Let's add
a little white to the hot pink and paint the
bottom layer of the sky. Let's make the transition
sheets by slowly adding rows to this mixture will have to repeat the process till we blend
the sky from top to bottom. You can go back and forth
to blend them smoothly. Now let's add purple, too hot pink to paint
the water body. It goes like bulk bill
to hot pink to purple. Again. With that in mind, let's blend the colors. For the clouds. We are mixing hot pink with white and you're making
some clouds randomly. Dislike we did in a
previous projects. Further top clouds here, hot pink and for the
bottom ones here, adding a little bit
of yellow to it. Now for the mountains
will be mixing black, Prussian blue, and white. It shouldn't be pure black. So that's the reason why we
are adding blue and white. For the reflection on the water. We are taking hot pink
to make some lines. We'll also add some white to this via using black
for the trees. Now let's mark where
the trees has to be. Let me show you an easy
way to paint these trees. Start with a line with
a thicker bottom. You can randomly make leaves
like this and make sure that you keep increasing the size
of the list as you go down. Another way is to
make branches this way by increasing their
legs while coming down. You can slowly fill the
branches with leaves later. We'll be using this technique
to paint our trees. In our painting, you
can fill this area with bushes and small
plants like this. Now let's finish the big
tree by the same method. Month the branches
and then the leaves. So this is how it
looks in the end. Let's move on to
our last project.
10. Project 5 : Fluffy Sky: Finally, our last
project is a fluffy sky. For that we require 300
GSM paper, paint brushes, gouache paints, clot, deep
water, and mixing plate. So let's begin by taking
blue and white for the sky, olive green, sap green, and yellow ocher for the hips. Let's get the image first. So this is almost the middle. And I'm drawing a
line just below that. And this is where
the hills would be. So here we're drawing one line
that represents one hill. And after, we'll be
drawing another one, they can feel the
backspace by adding few more hints. For the clouds. First, I'm mocking
the outline this way using the basic shapes. This is our first group
of clouds and we're repeating the same process
for the clouds behind. Finishing it, you can start giving the details
to the clouds. You can start detailing along the reference line
that we just drew. I'm repeating the same for
the next round of clouds. Before painting, Let's
lightly erase the sketch. I'm painting the
background other than the cloud's fully blue. I'm using a thin brush to outline the shape of the clouds. So after filling this up, Let's move on to the clouds. For the clouds, I'm mixing
a little blue with white. I'm using this color
to outline this cloud. I'm mixing a little
more white to this mixture and I'm
outlining the previous one. Same day. I'm lining this with the lightest
shade of blue. Now with a wet brush, Let's start blending
alphas two colors. We're repeating the same with
the lightest blue as well. Slowly blend the entire Cloud and make sure you leave
the outline free. This actually helps us
to highlight the clouds. Once this is done, let's do the same
for the other Cloud. We are using, olive green
for the farm most hill. After mixing the
paint within a photo, Let's start painting the hill. For the next one, I have added a little sap green to
our previous mixture. After filling this hill, let's add a little
yellow ocher to this mixture and paint
the remaining hints. I'm trying to give
a little texture to the hills using
different brush strokes. And with that, we have
come to an end of a class.
11. Conclusion : With that, we have come
to an end of a Friday, so quest case gifts. Now let's take a look at
what we have learned so far. We started off by looking
at the properties of gosh, they studied the basics of paint consistency,
layering, and blending. We also got to know about
the materials required. Then we move on to
our class projects, starting with a simple blue sky. There we were able to practice layering and controlling
the paint consistency. Followed that we practice
blending by painting a starry night sky and a slightly improvised version of lending in the sunset sky. Then we mix these
two techniques that we learned and
painted a pink sky. And we ended our class
project with a fluffy Skype. Now that's not the end. We have an amazing
giveaway for you for that, make sure you what
the full class enroll in the class projects
by submitting your projects. And most importantly, do
drop your genuine feedback. In case you're posting your
projects on Instagram, make sure you tag me so
that I don't miss them. With that said, we're
wrapping up our class. I want to thank you
all for joining along, and I hope the class is very
informative and useful. Also do let me know in the discussions what
you'd like to learn next. Until then, take care and bye.
