Tools and Materials You’ll Need for Jewelry Making
Basic jewelry making requires a few simple tools. As you expand your skills, you may choose to purchase additional items and materials, but here’s a short list of what you need to get started:
- Pliers
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Embroidery needle
- Caliper
- Beads and pendants
- Wire or cord
- Clasps and o-rings
There are several different types of pliers that you’ll want to use for making DIY jewelry. First, you’ll need wire cutter pliers, which are sharp enough to cut wire and chain. Needle nose pliers—which Skillshare instructor and founder and CEO of Brit + Co Brit Morin calls “workhorse pliers”—are used for opening o-rings and holding beads and smaller adornments in place as you work. Flat nose pliers are best for crimping and closing cord ends—you’ll use these to finish your pieces. Finally, you’ll need round nose pliers for creating loops and bends in your wires. You can purchase most of these pliers online or in your local hardware store for about $5 each.
In addition to pliers, you’ll also need a sharp, study pair of scissors, measuring tape, and an embroidery needle. You can pick these items up pretty inexpensively either online or at your local shops.
For the jewelry itself, you need beads and pendants of your choosing, wire or cord upon which to “string” your adornments, metal clasps and o-rings, and a caliper—a tool for measuring beads that is especially useful when planning your jewelry projects. You can purchase all of these items online or at your local craft store. Beads, pendants, wire, and cord pricing will depend upon the materials of which they consist, but you can get “the basics” from most retailers for about $20. Calipers range in price from about $10 to $50 and most beginners can get by with a basic model.
Once you’ve got your jewelry making tools in hand, you’re all set to begin creating DIY jewelry!
