Understudy
Ext: suburban Chicago ,1970s residential street, 4pm
A perfect summer day with no clouds fades in. The faint sounds of joyous playing children, sprinklers and nearby traffic can be heard.
A shining Checker taxi pulls up across the street from our view, having rolled to a break.
We zoom in to the taxi window to see TONY looking at his house with exhausted anger, and exits the vehicle.
TONY
{to the taxi driver} Thanks man, take it easy.
TAXI DRIVER
You to, and thank you for your service!
TONY chuckles nervously as the taxi pulls off, jaw flexing, and briskly walks across the wide street.
Before TONY makes it to the other side, the door to his house opens. His wife comes out with their youngest daughter on her hip, and smiling. The eldest girl follows with a look of terror and relief.
Another figure emerges looking exactly like Tony, wearing a stained apron and an unsettling smile. The figure places his hand on the wife’s shoulder, then the youngest daughter, then TONY’s oldest daughter.
TONY blinks and squints, sure that the Chicago heat is making him see things. His confusion and anger rise.
TONY
‘The fuck? Who is this GiGi?
WIFE/GIGI
(Warmly) This is my husband, Anthony. Did you need something, sir?
The oldest daughter shakes with tears as a look of pure terror sets in. TONY draws his handgun, and the doppelganger shifts quickly as his eyes have grown to at least 4 times their original size.
The figure makes loud incoherent noises and squeezes the family till all members are bleeding.
TONY draws his handgun and fires 3 rounds into the doppelganger's skull as it continues to smile.
GIGI and the girls scream and run toward TONY, embracing him through their tears.
TONY
Baby, are you ok? The fuck was that thing? Oh my God? girls-.
Fade out.
