About This Workshop
This is the fourth workshop in a 5 part series. The series builds on each other, taking the student from concept to pattern, pattern to collection, and collection to portfolio. While students have opportunity to take the entire series, you are not required to.
Join me as I share the art to creating complete surface pattern design collections! During this session, you’ll learn how to plan for a collection and balance it through scale, color and complexity. I’ll walk you step by step through my class, Surface Pattern Design 2.0. We’ll work on naming your collection and giving it a story, writing a proper bio and learn how to design a logo to complete your collection.
At the end of this workshop, you’ll have a complete collection ready to put in your portfolio!
*Students who sign up for this workshop should already have a body of work that they would like to pull from to make a complete collection. We will not be taking time to actually design patterns, but rather focus on fine tuning them for use in a portfolio.

- Once the workshop begins, remember to check your inbox! Every few days, you’ll receive an email outlining which project step to complete next.
- Share your project phases in the class project gallery according to the session timeline below.
- Keep an eye out for feedback and be sure to provide support and encouragement to your classmates, as well. The best learning experience on Skillshare is collaborative!
- Upload your final collection to the project gallery to successfully complete the session and receive your certificate.
Timeline
Phase 1 - The Importance of Designing in Collections (Due Friday, April 21st)
- Refresh: watch Lessons 1-3 from Surface Pattern Design 2.0
- Familiarize yourself with the workshop and Illustrator
- Due: Introduce yourself on the community board
Phase 2 - The Importance of Designing in Collections (Due Tuesday, April 25th)
- Watch Lesson 4 (“Why & How to Design Collections”) from Surface Pattern Design 2.0
- Gather 10 -12 patterns from your own body of work you’d like to turn into a collection.
- Due: Submit a name for your collection and write a short story or description to support it. Examples will be given during workshop.
Phase 3 - Fine Tune your Collection (Due Tuesday, May 2nd)
- Read “Completing Collections & Building a Portfolio” (will be posted during workshop)
- Adjust color and scale to give the collection a cohesive look.
- Include 3-4 blenders, 3-4 supporting coordinates and 3-4 focal point prints in your collection.
- Due: Submit your collection of 10-12 prints in collage format. Examples to be given during workshop.
Phase 4 - Your Bio (Due Friday, May 5th)
- Having a good Bio photo is essential! If you don’t already have one, prepare to either have one taken this week or take one yourself.
- Write a short Bio of yourself in 3rd person, examples to be giving during workshop.
- Due: Submit your bio photo and paragraph.
LIVE Q&A! I’ll be hosting a private LIVE Q&A Session for workshop students on Tuesday, May 9th at 6:00pm EST.
Phase 5 - Design a Logo (Due Tuesday, May 9th)
- Begin pulling together ideas for a logo for your collection.
- Decide to use either a font, or work on hand lettering the name.
- Design a logo, using motifs and colors from the collection as support. Examples to be given during workshop.
- If you missed it, watch the LIVE Q&A recording from last week.
- Due: Submit your finalized logo for the collection
