About This Workshop
This is the fifth and final workshop in a 5 part series. The series builds on each other, taking the student from concept to pattern, pattern to collection, and collection to portfolio. While students have opportunity to take the entire series, you are not required to.
Join me in this workshop to learn how to take you pattern collections and turn them into the perfect portfolio! During this session, you’ll learn how to plan for a portfolio, design it’s pages, publish an online version AND make your very own hard copy, if you wish. I’ll walk you step by step through essential parts in my courses, Design and Bind you own Portfolio and Surface Pattern Design 2.0. Once your portfolio is finished, students will have the opportunity to brainstorm career opportunities and begin contacting companies with their work.
*Students who sign up for this workshop should already have at least 1 pattern collection ready to put in portfolio form. We will not be taking time to actually design patterns, but rather build and perfect the pages of your portfolio.

- Make sure you’re enrolled in Surface Pattern Design 2.0 and Design and Bind your own Portfolio.
- Once the workshop begins, remember to check your inbox! Every few days, you’ll receive an email outlining which project step to complete next.
- Share your project phases in the class project gallery according to the session timeline below.
- Keep an eye out for feedback and be sure to provide support and encouragement to your classmates, as well. The best learning experience on Skillshare is collaborative!
- Upload your final portfolio to the project gallery to successfully complete the session and receive your certificate.
Timeline
Phase 1 - Groundwork (Due Friday, May 19th)
- Familiarize yourself with the workshop and Illustrator.
- Watch Lessons 9-10 (“The Importance of a Portfolio” & “Start Your Career”) from Surface Pattern Design 2.0
- If you plan to make a hard copy of your portfolio, purchase any necessary materials (will be outlined in workshop).
- Due: Introduce yourself on the community board
Phase 2 - Planning your Portfolio (Due Tuesday, May 23rd)
- Decide which pattern collection(s) you’d like to include in your portfolio.
- Watch Lessons 2-8 in Design & Bind your own Portfolio
- Make a list of the pages you’d like to include in your own portfolio
- Due: Submit an outline for your Table of Contents page
Phase 3 - Designing the Pages (Due Monday, May 29th)
- Read “Completing Collections & Building a Portfolio” (will be posted during workshop)
- Design the interior pages of your Portfolio
- Watch Lesson 9 in Design & Bind your own Portfolio
- Due: Publish an online version of your portfolio. Share the link with us in your project
*Optional Phase 4 - Making and Binding your own Book (Due Sunday, June 4th)
*If you choose not to make your own book, skip this phase and use this time to keep working on your digital version.
- Watch Lessons 10-17 in Design & Bind your own Portfolio
- Download the instruction guide and make your portfolio.
- Due: Submit a photo (or two) of your finished portfolio book.
*LIVE AMA (ask me anything) Tuesday, June 6th at 6:00pm EST
Phase 5 - Research and Contacts (Due Thursday, June 8th)
- Decide what industry(ies) you’d like to approach (wallpaper, stationery, fabric, ribbon, etc).
- If you missed it, watch the LIVE AMA recording from last week.
- Make a list of the top 10 companies you’d like to approach, including their contact info.
- If you feel ready, begin reaching out to the companies on your list (refer to workshop materials for advice).
- Due: Share with us about your experience, or where you’re at in the process. Feel free to share your list of 10 companies (or not), how your calls went, or when you plan to start contacting companies if you haven’t already
