Wake Up Earlier: When & Why

Assignment:
When and Why I want to wake up early.
Current Wake Time: 8:30/9:00am
Ideal Wake Time: 7:00am
Why: To get more time in the day to socialise, relax and to get more active.

Notes:

Know Your Why
Having an idea of why you want to wake up earlier will help to motivate you to do so, and revitalise the mentality behind it, rather than subconsciously encouraging yourself to fall back asleep.

I want to get more time to exercise, walk the dog and stimulate my brain without eating into the time in the day. This will also allow me to begin my work earlier, whether personal or business, and therefore stop earlier to relax and socialise. Essentially, sleeping later cuts out my social life.

When Do You Wake Up Now?
We need consistency to be able to wake earlier, and still feel good about it. Going to bed at the same time will prompt the body into learning when it wants to be asleep. Therefore, the body will subconsciously wake as required too.

I generally aim to sleep at 11:30pm, but can range between 11pm and 2am. I have my alarm set for 8am, to get up. Often, I sleep in for an extra 15 minutes, weekends allow longer.

One Minute A Day
Set the alarm one minute earlier everyday, as a gradual change. This won’t feel like a significant change. If stuck at a time, stay for a while until it’s comfortable, then change again.

Sleep Cycles & You
If a quick change is needed, you need to understand sleep. Waking up in stage 1 and 2 is easy, 3 and 4 is deep and difficult to wake up. REM is a dream state. We sleep in 90 minute cycles. Cut by 90 minutes if you need to have a jump to wake up early.

Actually Getting Out Of Bed
Forcing yourself out of bed is a skill that takes practise. It’s partially about motivation and discipline, but it’s also about getting used to the feeling of getting up and waking yourself up, by splashing water on your face, or whatever it is that gets the sombre feeling away. Having something you're passionate about will make this even easier.

Goal Setting
Aside from why you want to get up, having a goal will make this more achievable. A target will keep the motivation. This should be different to the why. This could be monetary, healthy based, business or personal. It could also just be something small, or something that takes a long time to achieve. As long as there is a goal, that benefits waking early.

Actually Getting Tired Through The Day
It can feel good to get sleepy during the tired, making falling asleep both easier and rewarding. This is an issue that lots of people face. If you aren’t feeling tired at the end of the day, it’s a struggle to get to sleep. The more work done makes more tiredness, this is both mental and physical. Exercising in the morning primes the body for the day. That will get the body stimulated to work; working mentally also makes you tired.
